Great Honour For Malahide Athlete ‘The World is your Oyster’ is a very famous old saying and sometimes it comes true for some people. In the case of Malahide man, Michael Fennell, it certainly came to pass. Marathon enthusiast, Michael has been selected to be one of the first Irish people to run in the Olympic Stadium in London this Thursday, May 3rd. He was picked

the County Leader, “I heard Derval O’Rourke being interviewed about regional events that were being held in the four provinces. I decided to go to the local event in Santry with my daughter. All I had to do was to participate in a 100 metre event. I couldn’t believe it when I was picked,” said a delighted Michael.

at the Powerade Ireland ‘On Your Marks’ event that took place at Morton Stadium in Santry recently and will run 100 metres in the stadium, which will focus the attention of the world in about two months time. Michael, who works for An Post, has completed over 30 marathons across the world including London, New York and Berlin. He told

He is now one of four people who have been selected to be the first Irish people to run 100m in the Olympic Stadium next month, accompanied by Irish Olympic medal prospect, Derval O’Rourke. Michael, who is originally from Clare, has been living in Malahide for over 30 years and is a member of the Civil Service Harriers Athletic

By Patrick Finnegan Club based in the Phoenix Park. He had exhausted all avenues to get tickets for the Olympics but now will be one of the first Irish people into the stadium to run. “I cannot believe I’ve won. I tried the ticket lottery for everything from athletics to swimming but had no luck and now to be one of the first four Irish people to run on the track in the Olympic Stadium is unbelievable. Some of the lads have even been saying I could qualify when I’m over there but I don’t think so,” he said after he won. “It’s just fabulous. Just imagine watching the 100 metres final in a few week time on TV and saying. “I ran there. I think I’ll aim to run in lane 4. The Olympic champion normally comes from this lane,” said Michael. “We are flying out tomorrow (Wednesday) and will go to the stadium on Thursday to spend a few hours there, before running in the event. Michael is allowed to bring one person on the trip, will be accompanied by his daughter, Aisling. “She is so excited about everything surrounding the trip. I think that she is just as excited about the prospect of visiting some of London’s shopping hot spots, so much so that she even bribed my son, Conor (9) to

forego an opportunity to travel, for the promise of a premiership football jersey,” said Michael. It certainly promises to be an occasion that affable Michael will remember forever.

Model Railway Museum Returns To Malahide Fine Gael TD for Dublin North Alan Farrell and local councillor, Anthony Lavin (FG), have announced that the Fry Model Railway museum will be housed at the Casino in Malahide. The historical building was widely seen as the logical place to house the important museum. This has been achieved in conjunction with Bord Fáilte and the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport. Minister Leo Varadkar welcomed the move and said: “I’m delighted that this matter has finally been resolved. The Fry Collection and Model Railway will be a valuable addition to the growing range of tourist attractions which Malahide has to offer.” Minister Varadkar also said it is important to acknowledge the late Micheál Gaffney, whose generosity facilitated this development, and whose representatives are working closely with the County Council to finalise arrangements. He thanked Cllr Anthony Lavin, Deputy Alan Farrell and Minister James Reilly for their efforts. The Minister also acknowledged Cyril Fry’s lifelong work devel-

oping the collection, and thanked his family for their commitment that the collection be properly looked after and displayed. Commenting on the significant work that has gone into securing this

possible by the extraordinary donation from the late Micheál Gaffney. Lavin acknowledged the importance of this development, adding that ‘This announcement is an extraordinary success for Malahide, its residents, the County Manager and senior staff in the Department of Transport and Tourism, and for those of us who have been working quietly and consistently on this project. However, it is a particular success for the late Micheál Gaffney and the trustees who have represented his wish to have Fry Model Railway back in Malahide.” Farrell concluded, “I am aware the significant part that Malahide residents played in bringing the Fry Railway Museum home. I am very

A local man from Rush is celebrating his achievement after being selected to represent Ireland on the international squash team. Nigel Peyton will play in the championships taking place from now until the 6th of May. The Rush native plays Nigel Peyton from Rush with the Fitzwilliam Club and has represented Ireland on another occasion, however, this will be the first time he has a senior cap going in. Speaking to the County Leader, Nigel’s dad Henry said the family are all delighted: “It’s really a fantastic opportunity for him. He’s worked really hard and we’re so happy all the hard work has paid off. He’s always loved the sport, he’s been playing it ever since he was six years old.” Keeping it in the family, Nigel’s brother also plays Squash, but more so as a hobby. We wish Nigel the best of luck in the championships and have no doubt he’ll do Rush proud.

M1 Upgrade To Boost Local Businesses The M1 road network at the entry point to the North County is certainly getting a massive facelift at the moment. The motorway extension from the airport (J2) to Drinan (J3), is being extended as far as the Swords/Donabate interchange at Lissenhall (J4). Motorists travelling to and from Balbriggan, Skerries, Donabate, Rush and Lusk can expect to see their journey time reduced dramatically each way, as they use the M1 to and from the airport and the city centre. The County Leader contacted the National Roads Authority and their spokesman, Sean O’Neill told us about the benefits that motorists can expect. “Works are currently underway in the latest contract to continue the widening from Junction 3 to Junction 4, a mainline distance of 4km. Traffic Management is currently in place along the first 2km north of Junction 3, where median works are

ongoing to provide the additional third lane. It is expected that these works will be completed by the end of 2012 / early 2013. When finished there will be a continuous dual three lane motorway in both directions along the M1 between Junction 1 (M50) and Junction 4 (Lissenhall), with a lane drop northbound / lane gain southbound, at Lissenhall interchange. As part of the works at Junction 4, there will be enhanced facilities for both pedestrians and cyclists as well as providing additional capacity for vehicles.” The new interchange at the Donabate roundabout will be completely different to what is there at present. There is also good news for cyclists and pedestrians as well. O’Neill explained, “The existing arrangements at Lissenhall Junction do not include facilities for pedestrians and cyclists and the junction is therefore a barrier to these road users crossing the motorway

corridor. The new works include the construction of continuous high quality facilities for pedestrians and cyclists. There will be a

fully segregated route along the southern side of the junction, with underpasses under the slip roads. There will also be at-grade facilities with signalised crossings of the slip roads on the north side of the junction. Facilities for crossing the R132 (old N1) are also included. As such, the finished scheme will see a major improvement in the quality of access to and from Swords for these road users.” This upgrade work is good news for business in the area, and is further proof, if needed

that the North County is ready and open for all kinds of business. Fingal Dublin Chamber CEO, Tony Lambert welcomed the new road improvements, when he told the County Leader, “The current upgrading of the M1 from Dublin Airport to the Swords/Donabate interchange is an important piece of infrastructure. The present two lanes are inadequate to handle both early morning and late evening traffic. The inclusion of a third lane, together with a major improvement to the Swords/Donabate interchange, will ease traffic congestion and will be a major boost for business people getting to work,” he said. Delivering improvements to an already world class roads network in the North County, is further evidence that the area is more than ready to facilitate major projects, like the new Children’s Hospital, as reported in last week’s edition of the County Leader. If access to such a facility was seen as a stumbling block, then this has been completely removed now.

Portmarnock Scouts On Upward Curve Four new children have recently been accepted into the Portmarnock Scout group and have begun the process of being invested as scouts. They have a variety of ‘achievements’ to get through prior to becoming full members. These include learning how to light a fire in the open, selecting suitable timber, cooking a simple meal, some knots and learning how to use a compass.

There are a few other things, like history of scouting, left hand shake, promise and law and so on. Portmarnock Scout Group numbers are now at maximum level and are stronger than they have been for many years. The group has a membership of 125 beavers, cubs, scouts, venture scouts and leaders and there is a waiting list of around 60 waiting to join. “It is very difficult to cater for all of the children wishing to join, says Peter O’Kelly, Group leader, especially as we are depending on the good auspices of various local premises, schools, PSLC, Arch Club, GAA hall and so on to hold our meetings. Scouting is the largest uniformed youth organisation in the world,” he says. “When we have our new Scout and Guide centre built, we feel we will be able to cater for all and we look forward to the den being opened within a year. We are very grateful to Dunnes Stores and the people of Portmarnock who gave just over €3,000 at our recent bag packing. The Parish Pastoral group have expressed their full support and have offered fundraising advertising in the local parish newsletter and the facility of a church gate collection.”

Opposition To Sewage Plant Intensifies The opposition to the siting of the controversial Super Sewage Plant

in the North County is being stepped up. Residents of Lusk

recently staged a protest, opposing the siting of the massive sewage treatment plant near the small heritage town. A trailer, featuring a visual reminder of the proposal by the County Council to pump millions of litres of sewage from

as far away as Dublin City, Wicklow, Kildare and Meath to the area, has been located on the Skerries Road, just outside the village. Speaking at the unveiling of the trailer, local resident Gary Browne said, “This plan

is a total nonsense. It makes no economic sense and is completely unjustified. The County Council won’t give planning permission to locals to build a house for their children because it represents over-development, yet they propose to build a massive industrial complex to process

other local authorities’ sewage.” Another local, Ernie Donnelly, said, “The idea of building a massive pipe to pump sewage from as far away as Wicklow, Meath and Kildare, is insane. With no money to invest in schools and hospitals, how can such a waste of money be justified?”.

The Under 18 boys for being the first team, in the club, to reach a National cup semi final. The last award to be presented was the Niall Brophy Memorial trophy. This is an award usually given to a youth member for their outstanding commitment to the club. The trophy was donated by the Brophy family after their son, Niall, tragically lost his life. The Brophy family, and Niall, had been integral members of the club and Niall not only played with the club, but gave up much of his time coaching and motivating the children. This year, the trophy was awarded to an adult member. Lori Daly has been with the club for 20 years, first recruited by Mrs Brophy. Lori has been coaching for the past 20 years and also helping with the day to day running of the Club. She is a well known, liked and admired member of the club and Swords Basketball club recognised her dedication and commitment by awarding her the trophy.

Two Local Credit Unions To Merge T

he imminent amalgamation of two local Credit Unions is being seen as a precursor to future amalgamations and take overs in the sector. The merger of Howth and Malahide Credit Unions will be structured as a takeover by Malahide Credit Union of it’s neighbour in Howth. The fall in property values is understood to have put pressure on Howth Credit Union balance sheet. It was forced to revalue downwards a building it acquired at the height of the property boom. This has caused it’s reserves to fall below what the Central Bank regards as acceptable. Regulators have encouraged the takeover by the stronger Malahide branch. This new set up will require funding of €2 million from the emergency fund set up by the Irish League of Credit Unions. A spokesperson for the Irish League of Credit Unions spoke to the

County Leader about the situation. "A number of transfers of engagements or mergers have taken place across the credit union sector in the past years. This is not a bad thing. The end result of such a process is enhanced services to members and stronger credit unions moving into the future which are better equipped to manage increased regulatory requirements." The spokesperson continued, "We cannot comment on specific transfers, as there is a

Rush Garda Station Closes By Jennifer McShane Sadly, Rush Garda Station closed its doors for the final time on Sunday 29th April last. The closure came after the announcement from the government that garda stations in Rush and Malahide would have to close their doors due to lack of funding. Speaking to the County Leader, Inspector Declan Yeates from Balbriggan Garda Station was keen to relay an important message to residents: "The important message for the community of Rush is that the policing service already being provided will not be affected or reduced." "Lusk Station will now provide cover for the Rush sub-district. Lusk Garda Station and Rush Garda Station have been amalgamated from two Garda subdistricts into one and Lusk Station will now operate on a 24 hour basis," he continued. "The number of Garda personnel currently allocated to Rush sub-district and Lusk sub-district areas will not be reduced nor will the resources currently available between the two stations and there will also be a a 24 hour response available from Balbriggan and Skerries Garda Station. Opening hours for Lusk station will be advised in the coming days."

Now Balbriggan’s

process to be followed. Regulatory approval needs to be given, and all relevant parties (including members) need to be advised in a timely manner. Mergers do not mean that services to members will be disrupted or changed, and in some cases services are enhanced. Members are unaffected by this process and can continue to do business as normal with their credit union. Typically, in transfers both credit union offices will remain open and fully operational. Savings at both credit unions remain protected by the Government’s Deposit Guarantee Scheme of up to €100,000 per depositor,” the statement concluded. An official commission on the sector has recommended mass mergers, so this could be just the beginning of such mergers and takeovers of credit unions in the area, by stronger units. Offices will remain open in both Howth and Malahide.

STILLMAN BUILDING CONTRACTING LTD

Tel: (01) 8411 890 • 086 812 9551 • email: info@stillman.ie The massive affect of the recession on the construction business has meant that it is now a great time to avail of the services of a top class building firm. People are now availing of the opportunity to renovate and upgrade their homes and build extensions, rather that move home. Stillman Building Contracting Ltd (SBC) are one such building firm that have improvised and shaken off the shackles of recession. They are a privately owned, medium sized construction company with their own workshop and yard located north of Balbriggan at Silver Beach, Gormanston, Co. Meath. Their lorries and vans are a common sight on the roads of North County Dublin. Company owner, Mark Stillman spoke about the difference that Stillman Construction makes. “The

Stillman Building Contracting Ltd. was established in 1990 and has completed projects in the residential, renovation, and commercial sector,” he said. Their attention to detail is very impressive and is certain to provide the company with an advantage over their rivals. Mark said, “We recognise the importance of the management of Health and Safety

pricing. We also specialise in sunrooms, porches, and garage conversions,” he said. The company can advise if planning permissions will be required and, if requested, can recommend engineers and architects, with whom they work regularly. They can assist in the planning application process and give expert advice on whether permission is required for different projects. Mark explained that “Planning permission will not be normally needed for single storey rear extensions under 40 square meters and occupying less than 75 per cent of the garden. Other building projects which do not require planning permission include, front porches of less than two square metres and attic conversions with Velux windows at the rear. However, attic conversions with dormer windows will require planning permission.” From complete internal or external renovation, they can get the job done efficiently and economically. “Our restoration work includes buildings. like St George’s Church of Ireland in Balbriggan and Holmpatrick Church in Skerries. We also did restoration work on Knocknagin House, a listed building outside Balbriggan. We also worked on the conversion of a 17th century barn, under the guidance of Fingal County Council’s Conservation & Heritage Division. Our insurance brokers are Fingal Insurance Brokers Ltd, Swords.” Because of the economic downturn, most of the company’s work is in extensions and sunrooms. Mark Stillman’s motto is very simple and sums up the ethos of this fine company. “I assure quality of work, trustworthiness and quality without compromise.”

Rush, located between Skerries to the north and Lusk to the west, has made its way from being known for the smugglers in the 19th century, to a nice place with an award winning community spirit. After the increase of population in the last years, it

still has about 8,200 citizens. So this small, seaside town has more to offer than you might guess. Rush is renowned as the heart of market gardening in Leinster and many people are employed in agriculture. The surrounding area

BUSINESS Rush has a great variety of businesses and it has become a place which offers nice shops with an array of varied products. There are the typical stores selling clothes and food, but also a wine shop and a computer hardware shop. In comparison to the big cities, it is easier to go shopping, as there aren’t so many people and even the parking situation is much better. With the recent expansion of the town, amenities and choice for shoppers has increased greatly and for many, there is no need to go to the larger centres anymore to purchase items that were once out of the reach of residents of Rush.

As an interesting aside, a world-famous pipe band formed in 1910 and still as strong as ever is named the Black Raven Pipe Band Lusk residents take pride in their town, each year they continue to excel in the Tidy Towns competition and strive to keep this tradition up year after year. They recently launched their Tidy Towns activities for the upcoming competition, and we’ve no doubt that they’ll do extremely well again this year. Visitors will be instantly aware that the town does not have an urban feel, but instead has that traditional feel. This will be evident as you stroll around the superbly quaint town looking to find different goodies in the variety of shops they have. You are very likely to be

Lusk has that traditional feeling that makes for a truly wonderful atmosphere around the town. Counselling On A Solid Base Mary Kenneally has taken over the reins as chairperson of the Fingal Counselling Service from the capable hands of Mary Forde. For readers unfamiliar with the work done at the Brackenstown Adult Scene of Education (BASE) in Swords, this service is just one of the threads in the community education and training facility. “The Counselling Service provides psychotherapy to individuals and couples,” she says by way of introduction. “The 29 counsellors working here at the moment are all graduates of our diploma course, which means they have completed a foundation year, and have then done the three and a half years it takes to offer humanistic counselling that’s recognised by the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.” The training centre only offers places to one group at a time, nurturing and mentoring them through to their diploma, and then subsequently, the 450 hours of psychotherapy that’s required to be accredited. “We have 16 people training at the moment, with three tutors training them in “person-centred counselling,” says Mary Forde, who defines it as “believing in the power of the individual, that they’re capable of determining their own future.” It’s a mission statement that’s been embraced by the service’s new chairperson, Mary Kenneally, tells the County Leader: “The service offers a safe and confidential environment where clients are encouraged and supported while working through their difficulties.” Given that the clients are struggling with devastating emotional difficulties such as bereavements, suicides, depression due to loss or separation, marital and relationship issues, or learning to cope in times of physical, sexual and emotional abuse, the counsellors need to have a robust sense of self. “We get supervision once a month, as you have to be able to take care of yourself before you can offer anything to the client. It’s an important part of the training and an important part of the ongoing service. “On average we’d each see four to five clients a week, which means there’s over 100 people getting a 50minute session of psychotherapy in any given week.” Many of the clients might never have availed of psychotherapy before and can find the prospect of simply talking about their issues a challenge. Once it’s ascertained that the service can offer suitable therapy to the client, the process can begin. “Typically, new clients will phone to arrange an appointment, they’ll be assigned their counsellor, and the relationship between the counsellor and the client is all important.” The experience at BASE has been that there isn’t a gender bias between the types of issues, but even so, their clientele roughly divides into about 70/30 women to men. They’ve also found that couples could be attending separately as individuals, or together for relationship counselling, or that one half of a couple finds respite there for issues that affect both of them. “We take the person wherever they are,” she says in terms of dealing with whatever stage of grief that

clients feel uppermost. “Often one of the first things we hear is: ‘I think I’m going mad’. Finding out that they might simply need new coping strategies can be a first step. “We contract with them: we tell them the type of counselling we’re offering; there are things we’re not qualified for, such as addictions and we need to make sure the service is suitable for them first of all.” The service here can redirect you to a person or service that will give you the best chance of success, as it’s part of the north Dublin area’s co-ordinated communitybased support. Mary continued, “Because we rely heavily on funding to supplement whatever donation they can afford, we take some details to help us keep statistics, we cover the confidentiality agreement and take it from there.” There’s a four to five months’ waiting list at the moment. “If we get a call from a GP or are told that someone’s at risk we can take a crisis appointment.” Mary Kenneally’s voluntary role of chairperson means she’s involved in the day to day running of the service and dedicates at least two days every week to it. The course director reports to her, as do the tutors and supervisors, and she liaises with the other volunteers who keep the service functioning monthly to discuss the service at BASE, and whatever other related committees that dovetail with the counselling services’ aims. The financial contributions from the clients only make up about a fifth of the overall cost of providing care and the bulk of funding comes from the Family Support Agency, with support too from the HSE. The local Lions Club offers support every year that’s greatly appreciated. Like every organisation at the moment, the biggest challenge is in balancing the cutbacks with the increase in demand. Mary says, “We specifically trained some 14 counsellors to deal with pre and post suicides, so we’ve the capacity for over-18s who find themselves thinking about it and the second strand is for those people bereaved by the loss of a loved one through suicide,” says Mary. “I don’t know why it is that the need for suicide counselling has increased. I definitely think financial worries have a lot to do with it; loss of jobs, people are struggling; the coping skills are diminished; the majority of people we see are between 30 and 49. “We think that’s where people have families and a lot of people are impacted if there is trouble in the home,” she says. A new strand of support was introduced last November with the inauguration of the Fingal Bereaved by Suicide Support Service, which is associated with Counselling Service. Despite the sombre nature of the issues they’ve to deal with, she says the work itself offers satisfaction. “It’s a privilege really to be able to work with people at that level, week after week there’s a rapport built with the client; then of course when they finish, it’s a great feeling. It’s great when they say ‘I think I can handle it now’. It’s amazing how you travel a journey with them; it’s a great privilege.” The Fingal Counselling Service can be reached on 018902596 and the Bereaved by Suicide Support Service is at 086-7347353.

Lusk GAA Spruce Things Up

Sharon Argue of Kieran James Hair Salon in Swords was in AIB, Swords recently launching her new range of fascinators as part of AIB's Big Drive For Business Initiative.

Round Towers GAA Club in Lusk, launched its new website and opened their refurbished dressing rooms on Saturday 21st April last. There was a large crowd in attendance, including Mayor Gerry Maguire, Senator Darragh O’Brien (FF) and representatives from Lusk United FC. Sam Maguire also paid a visit so all Juvenile teams had a photo opportunity. The Lord Mayor opened the dressing rooms along with Senator Darragh O’Brien (FF) and other long serving members of the Club. Stephen O’Connell, Chairperson of Round Towers, welcomed the members of the club and local community along with representatives from other sporting clubs in the area to the unveiling. He spoke of Round Towers long and distinguished history,

founded in 1906, and the need to improve the facilities to cater for the growing number of club members. Andy Kettle, Chairman of the Dublin County Board, arrived for the launch of the Club’s new website. He said “It’s how the young people communicate and it was important that we keep up with this form of communication.” It will enable people from Lusk who are overseas to keep in touch with what’s happening in their local club at home. Round Towers is a growing club with 105 children attending nursery on Saturday mornings. Much of the thanks is due to Shane Treanor (GPO) who works tirelessly to promote Gaelic games in the community. The club couldn’t work either without the dedication of the Executive and Juvenile Committee’s and all the mentors and volunteers who work with the children.

FOOTBALL FUNDRAISER Castlemill United Balbriggan, held their second annual fundraiser at the Hamlet pub recently. An unlucky day for some but not this club as they had a full house and great success on the night. Speaking to the County

Leader, owner of the Hamlet Pub, Keith Curtin, said he would “like to thank all those that attended on the night.” Darren Smith, who helped organise the night, would also like to thank those who “have been so generous to the club

throughout the year”. He went on to say that “it would not be possible without their support.”

The night was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. We wish them all the best

and here’s to what will surely be another very successful season at Castlemill United.

February 2012, and in 7 weeks, 272 books have already been loaned to students. It has proven to be an overwhelming success, with students borrowing books in numbers and spending lunchtimes and breaks enjoying reading in a dedicated classroom. Sharon McGrath, Principal of Fingal Community College, notes that “there is a perception that students don’t read and are more interested in the internet and television. The reality is that students need facilities to support them to embrace reading. This new library is bringing the joy of reading to students at the school and giving them access to a range of books they are really interested in. The response from students has been amazing and this exhibition shows how their interest in reading is inspiring

Fashionable Debs Fair In Balbriggan The Bracken Court Hotel in Balbriggan was recently home to a very successful Debs Fair. Around 500 residents from the area and beyond all came out in force to see what the Fair had to offer

and the feedback was very positive. Organiser, Noel Greene told the County Leader: "Everyone at the event was very enthusiastic and said they loved the event as it was a one stop shop for all their Debs needs." The highlight of night was the catwalk event, where over 20 students from Balbriggan and surrounding schools gave a pro performance for all to see, which the crowd loved. The main result of the night was that all businesses got some great exposure and brought awareness to the locals in Balbriggan and the North County. "We want to thank the Bracken Court Hotel for letting us use their venue and a big thank you to the students and local Pictured modelling outfits on the catwalk at the recent Debs businesses who made this Fair at the Bracken Court Hotel are Balbriggan Community event a great night for all," he concluded. College students, Victor Alkmin and Marlene Brobniewsai.

Since you can’t avoid the minefield of conflicts indicated, you may as well use the opportunity to tackle persistent issues. However, do bear in mind that even ordinary situations could become confused right now.

Judge this week by its unfair dilemmas, and you’ll decide it is a total write-off. Indications are that you’re blamed for problems not of your making, and others speak out of turn. Note all for future reference.

If ever there was a time when addressing issues both swiftly and with uncompromising clarity was vital, it’s during this week. The difficulty, however, is that you’re uncertain about your priorities and past decisions.

Jan 20 - Feb 18

Opting out of conflicts won’t be easy. You want to defend others and stand up when circumstances become unfair. However, this is a week when even your most straightforward statements could be misunderstood.

Jun 21 - Jul 22

Your reaction to the bad behaviour of others depends more on the nature of the damage that they’ve done than how much they’ve upset you. What’s tricky, however, is that you want to be direct but not alienate them.
