Who’s Actually Representing You? With just over a year to go to the local elections, our councillors are busying themselves tackling local issues in an effort to secure your precious vote. But who is doing what? By Patrick Finnegan
League Table Councillors
Politically, the North County is divided into three Electoral Areas, namely Balbriggan, (which includes Skerries, Rush, Lusk and the rural villages of the northern half of the county), Swords, (which includes Donabate and Portrane), and Howth / Malahide, (which also includes Portmarnock, Baldoyle and Sutton). Swords and Balbriggan elected representatives attend the same Area Committee meeting, while Malahide / Howth operate as a sepatate Area BALBRIGGAN Committee. TOP PERFORMER Official figures from last year studied by this journalist, reveal that there is a yawning gap between our best and worst performing councillors, based on the number of motions and questioned submitted at their respective Area Committee meetings. These figures are based on a total of 10 Cllr. Farrell monthly meetings, which took place in 2012. Attendances at these meetCouncillor ings have generally been good and we believe the figures are accurate to Ken Farrell (Lab) within plus or minus two percent, David O’Connor (NP) according to our research. Ciaran Byrne (Lab) When motions and questions are May McKeon (NP) added together, a gap of 151 submisTom O’Leary (FG) sions exists between the best and worst performing councillors over the year. You will be shocked at the performance of some of our representatives, who are trusted with representing us and ensuring that the local authority is fully aware of our concerns and needs. The top performer for 2012 in the Swords Electoral Area was Darragh Butler (FF), who tabled 26 motions and 126 questions, making a total of 152 submissions This was followed by Gerry McGuire (Lab) with 74 submissions, Tom Kelleher (Lab) with 37, Eugene Coppinger (SP) with 20 and Anne Devitt with just one motion. In the Balbriggan Electoral Ward, the leading performer was Ken Farrell (Lab), who made 122 submissions, made up of 26

motions and 96 questions. Others to contribute included David O’Connor (NP) with 23, Ciaran Byrne (Lab) with 20, May McKeon (NP) with 18 and Tom O’Leary with just one single motion. Councillors in the Howth / Malahide Electoral area were more evenly matched, where County Mayor, Cian O’Callaghan (Lab), made 128 submissions, comprised of 40 motions and 88 questions. He was followed by Anthony Lavin (FG), with 107, Peter Coyle (Lab) with 93, Eoghan O’Brien (FF) with 89, right down to Joan Maher (FG), who made just 6 submissions in total. Local councillors are elected to be the voice of residents at local government level. Decisions that affect our everyday lives are made, or rejected in County Hall in Swords. Like in all walks of life, there appears to be some who take their job more seriously than others. Clearly, many of our councillors are very dedicated and hard working to ensure that a valuable service is secured in providing a better environment for our families ; however, these figures show that some councillors are actively working on your behalf, but some clearly are not. Residents will ask why one councillor can make 152 submissions, whilst others make just one. You will have the final say in June next year.

O’Brien Blasts Hogan For Pyrite Backtrack Local senator, Darragh O’Brien has expressed his extreme disappointment that Minister for the Environment, Phil Hogan is backtracking on his Pyrite issue promise. Speaking to the County Leader, O’Brien said: “I was very disappointed to see Minister Hogan backtrack on his promises to those living in Pyrite affected areas around the North County and beyond.” “Minister Hogan was asked whether he would consider using money from the Pyrite Resolution Board’s €50 million fund to test homes in estates where pyrite has been found. Back in December last year, he stated the Pyrite
Resolution Board and its €50 million fund was a mechanism to ensure a sustainable source of funding is available to meet the costs for houses that manifest the symptoms of pyrite now and in the future.” “However, at a recent meeting in the Dail, he now says the fund is a last resort,” O’Brien continued. “Furthermore, it explicitly goes against the spirit of his statement that homeowners will not accrue any costs for remediation. By forcing the estimated 10,000 homeowners possibly affected by pyrite to pay for testing he is forcing them to pay costs of up to €3,000 on a Pyrite test before any help will be offered. This is wrong.” “Tests should be provided for all pyrite affected estates, homeowners from our locality should not be forced to watch their houses crack and crumble before help is provided,” he concluded.

Local deputy, Brendan Ryan (Lab), is continuing to press Dublin Bus to resolve the issue of capacity on the 33X route. Ryan told the County Leader, “Dublin Bus has informed me that they are aware that there is a serious capacity issue with the 33X. It is not unusual for dozens of commuters to be left stranded at bus stops in Lusk, as a packed 33X speeds by in the morning. There is also a
safety issue, as many are left standing as the bus travels down the M1 motorway at a higher speed than an average bus journey,” he said. Dublin Bus is seeking to remedy the capacity issue but in order to do so, they need additional resources as this review also includes the 41 bus route and its ancillary services. Ryan confirmed, “They are hopeful of finalising the review with a resolution of the 33X capacity issue

Cat arrested in prison Prison guards have arrested a cat - for attempting to smuggle contraband goods in for inmates. It had items including drill bits, files, earphones, a mobile phone and charger fastened to its body with tape. Officials said the items could be used to effect a means of escape or for communicating with criminals on the outside. A prison spokesperson said: "It's tough to find out who's responsible for the action as the cat doesn't speak."

Are Council Washing Their Hands Of Drainage Problem? By Patrick Finnegan A Balbriggan woman, who is on disability and living alone, claims that she is at her wits end trying to get the County Council to fix a drainage problem in her back garden. Patricia Kiernan, who lives in a council house in Hamilton Way in Balbriggan told the County Leader that she has been trying to get the local authority to admit that there is a drainage problem in her back garden. Every time it rains, her garden floods and in particularly heavy rain, which we had recently, the water can come into her kitchen. Patricia, who is on oxygen for emphysema and a total of 38 tablets per day, is unable to bring in coal and logs from her garden, due to the danger of her slipping in the flooded garden. This means she cannot light the fire to keep her warm on rainy days. Patricia said, “If I had my
Malahide School Granted Planning Permission There was some great news for Malahide last week, with the news that St. Oliver Plunkett National School has been granted planning permission for a new school. Speaking to the County Leader, local senator, Darragh O’Brien said, “The chair of the school’s

health, it wouldn’t matter so much, but it’s a real problem for me now.
Board of Management, Alan Markey informed me about the granting of the planning permission and I am delighted to support this application. I extend my congratulations to principal, Claire O’Connor, as well as to Alan Markey, Tony Healy, Fran Leavey and all board of management members, as well as the parents association. The next step will be to get the Department to sanction the building,” concluded O’Brien.
I’ve been on to the council for a long time and they just laugh at the problem because when they arrive, the rain has stopped and all they see is a soggy garden,” she said. I’m fighting this for two and a half years. I contacted deputy Brendan Ryan, who made representations to the local authority on my behalf on many occasions, but to no avail. The last letter from the council was sent last October, and it stated, “The Council’s Clerk of Works has carried out an examination of the garden and has reported that the garden has adequate drainage and therefore no works are necessary,” the report concluded. Patricia keeps her freezer in a shed at the end of the garden, due to lack of room in the house. “One time, the water got into the shed and blew a fuse there and I lost about € 300 worth of food, as a result. Another time, it got into the house and destroyed the lino, which had to be thrown out. My neighbours are very kind and look after me, but I don’t know what to do and I feel that I have nowhere to turn to,” said a desperate Patricia.

Swords Open For Business By Patrick Finnegan Fingal Dublin Chamber wants to reassure shoppers and customers that Swords will be open for business during the laying of a new water main pipe from the Pinnock Hill Roundabout along Dublin Road to the Garda Station. Fingal Dublin Chamber CEO, Tony Lambert told the County Leader, “While a one-way system will be in place for eight weeks, all businesses along Dublin Road and Main Street will be accessible and open for business. The Chamber and the Council want to ensure that any disruption to business is kept to a minimum during the period that this very necessary infrastructural work is being carried out.” “The Chamber welcomes this work, but wants to ensure that people who live and work in the town and the many visitors coming to Swords can go about their business with minimum disruption,” said Lambert. The County Council has already started work, with phase one from Kettles Lane to Boroimhe complete and phase two to the Pinnock Hill Roundabout due for completion soon. Phase three of the work is from Pinnock Hill along Dublin Road as far as the Garda Station. This is expected to start no sooner than 8th April and
03
will take approximately eight weeks. This phase will require the operation of a one-way traffic system along Dublin Road for traffic leaving Swords. No traffic will be allowed to enter Swords from the Pinnock Hill Roundabout. It is intended to split this Phase into two parts. The first part is from Pinnock Hill to the junction at Forest Road. The duration for this part is 4 weeks approx. Traffic from Forest Road will be able to turn left and right during this phase.
CEO of Fingal Dublin Chamber, Tony Lambert is pictured at the junction of Forest Road and Dublin Road in Swords.
The second part of this work is more complex and covers the area from Forest Road to the Garda Station. This will necessitate open trench works for a four week period. The one-way system on Dublin Road leaving Swords will remain in place. Traffic from Forest Road will only be able to turn right onto Main Street/Dublin Road with no left turn during this four week period.

Councillors Divided Over Skerries Taxi Rank By Jennifer McShane The recent decision to amend the Skerries Taxi Rank proposal has divided local councillors. Local residents also strongly objected to the position of the rank (situated opposite St. Patrick’s Church), which they say will affect public parking opposite the church and encourage antisocial behaviour. While Balbriggan representative, Cllr Ciaran Byrne (Lab), welcomed the decision saying that the location of the proposed site for the rank was “in direct line of sight of the Garda Station Cllr. Byrne a hundred yards away” and that public parking opposite the church would also be available to residents for at least eight hours a day, Cllr Tom O’Leary (FG) and Cllr Ken Farrell (Lab), did not echo these positive sentiments. A number of weeks ago, the County Leader learned that Cllr Tom O’Leary (FG) and a large
Balbriggan Club Opens New Juvenile Room O’Dwyers GAA club in Balbriggan were celebrating recently, as, after months of hard work, the club have opened a new vibrant juvenile room for its members. At present, the club currently fields 19 juvenile teams, which continues to grow each year under the guidance of the hard working juvenile committee. In a town which has seen significant growth over the last couple of years and with very little infrastructure present, the club identified a need for a place where the younger
number of Skerries residents were concerned with the location of the taxi rank for these reasons, and he says this feeling has not changed. “Myself and the residents are really not happy with this decision,” he said. “I’ve also spoken to Cllr. O’Leary a number of taxi drivers who are equally unhappy and say they will refuse to use this new rank. It’s not over yet though, we will be putting forward a vote at the next full council meeting before an outcome is finally decided.” Cllr Ken Farrell (Lab), also spoke to the County Leader about this, and said that an issue that has had so many objections should not be going ahead. “There was a public consultation on this issue and hundreds wrote in objecting to it. With so many objections, it’s absolutely a problem. The location just isn’t suitable and it’s not right that the local residents should be ignored,” Farrell concluded. Cllr. Farrell
members could gather and socialise in a safe environment. In 2012, the club acquired some unused portacabins, which were kindly donated by the local Loreto Secondary School, and the decision was taken to transform the once derelict portacabins into a place the kids could call their own. Every project needs a driving force and this came in the form of Derek Kiernan and Declan Quinn. They put a lot of time and effort in to this worthwhile cause, and they were not left lacking support as a large amount of the clubs tradesmen gave up their time so freely to help
make this room a reality. After many hours of hard work the club can now enjoy the fruits of their labour. The kids now have a room for themselves where they can play pool, relax on a new sofa or watch TV. They also want to thank Diageo Ireland who kindly funded the project. “We hope that the younger members of O’Dwyers will have years of enjoyment and that this will help them to develop the strong sense of club and community spirit, which as a club, we will develop long into the future,” said Derek Kiernan.
Skerries Student Excels At SciFest On Friday, 22nd March last, post-primary school students from all over Dublin gathered to showcase their science projects and to begin the first of 15 regional SciFest Science Fairs, with one of our own doing particularly well. The top prize on the day went to 5th year student, Tom McDonald from Skerries Community College, with his project ‘Coastal Erosion in Skerries’ which examined coastal erosion and deposition over a period of two
05
years on his local beach in Skerries. He discovered that the beach profile changes seasonally due to wave and wind action experienced. He will now go on to the national final of SciFest which will take place in November in the Science Gallery in Dublin. Over 70 science projects were displayed at SciFest@DIT, with approximately 150 students from schools all over the county delving into the deeper realms of scientific exploration with some interesting results. Entries to this year’s SciFest have broken all records with up to 4000 students exhibiting their projects at the 15 venues over the next three months.

Allotments Available In Balbriggan And Skerries Springtime is traditionally the start of the vegetable growing season and now that the St. Patrick’s Day festivities are behind us, it is the perfect time to rent an allotment and start growing your own fruit and vegetables. There are a number of allotments currently available in Balbriggan and Skerries. There are many excellent reasons to sign up for an allotment: grow your own fresh seasonal vegetables and fruit, reduce your household food bills, take part in a social outdoor activity and make new friends. The latest allotment scheme at Balbriggan was recently completed by the Balbriggan Allotment Association (BAA), with grant support from Fingal LEADER partnership. The Balbriggan Allotment Scheme is unique in that it also includes a community orchard, pig rearing area, training allotment and a beekeeping area. The BAA will be organising training sessions on how to set up your allotment, how to prepare the ground and how sow and grow your vegetables. A pilot ‘Fuel Allotment’ project is also being developed at Balbriggan, where allotment holders can plant willow and grow their own fuel for winter months. Caitriona Redmond, well-known food blogger and member of the Balbriggan Allotment Association told the County Leader: “There are so many reasons why now is such a good time to sign up for an allotment - locally grown seasonal food, sustainable living, re-learning traditional farming and cooking skills not to mention the economic and employment situation many people and families now find themselves in.”

Students Generously Support Balbriggan Tidy Towns The County Leader reported earlier in the year about a new collaboration between Balbriggan Tidy Towns and Ardgillan Community College. The Civic, Social and Politcal Education (CSPE) students (led by teacher Caroline Doherty), undertook a bulb planting project with the Tidy Towns team in early winter and then they hosted a member of the Tidy Towns team in the school to do a presentation on ‘Community Stewardship’ in January of this year. The link between the school and the local volunteers grew ever stronger last week, when the Tidy Towns were contacted and told the pupils had organised a fund raising event on their behalf. Terry O’Reilly, the volunteer who had initiated the collaboration and Alex McCullagh, the Tidy Towns trea-
surer, where delighted to attended the college last Friday for the presentation of the €352 . “We were delighted that students undertook this fund raising event. It demonstrates that they valued the participation in our local activities and they recognised that extra funds would help us to extend our projects further into the community,” said volunteer Terry O’Reilly. “It is hoped that the strong links that were built this year between Balbriggan Tidy Towns and Ardgillan College and Balbriggan Community College will continue into the next academic year,” commented Balbriggan Tidy Towns PRO, Zoe Nelson. “In these difficult economic times, it is heartening to see the younger members of the community supporting the hard working Tidy Towns volunteers.”

Meriel Calls It A Day After 40 Years Thursday last, 28th March was a bitter sweet day for AIB Bank Swords employee, Meriel Deane. It was the day she retired from the bank after 40 years service. Meriel, who is a Swords resident has been a very popular member of staff at the Swords branch of AIB Bank for the past almost 12 years. However, Meriel will not be lying idle in her retirement, as this very active lady is involved with a number of organisations that will keep her fully occupied in her retirement. She’s part of the AIB Choral Society, where she sings at various charity fundraisers. “I’m also involved with the Niall Mellon Trust and have been out in South Africa on four separate occasions,” she said.

Donabate Library Gets Official Go Ahead There is some good news for local residents in Donabate, as official plans for a brand new library, to be located in the Donabate Portrane Community and Leisure Centre went on public display last week. Speaking to the County Leader about the upcoming plans, local Fianna Fail activist Clara La Combre, and Cllr Darragh Butler (FF), both welcomed the news. Butler said that the new facility would be a fantastic facility for the community. La Combre said, “I have served on the Board of Directors of the Donabate Portrane Community Centre since 2007 and during my time as a volunteer director, I came up with the idea of using the largely unused top floor of the centre as a library.
school. “I just love doing this and I can’t wait to get over there and start this vital work. The Niall Mellon Trust has already housed 100,000 people in 10,000 homes over the past 10 years. “I’m also involved in various fundraising projects through the Arts and Crafts group in Swords, so I’ll have plenty of time now,” she said. Meriel, who is also a leader in the Girls’ Brigade, has greatly enjoyed the last 40 years working for AIB. “They’ve been like an additional family to me and I’ve made many really great friends in my time here,” said Meriel, who regards the emergence of female bank managers as a great breakthrough, which is greatly welcomed,” she said. There seems little doubt, but that this energetic lady certainly will not be bored and won’t have too much time to relax in her well earned retirement.
I never dreamed that my suggestion would come to fruition as it has, and I’m obviously delighted about this positive outcome,” she said. “There will be plenty of room for everyone in the new centre. With a little alteration the upstairs can be used to accommodate the groups that currently use the space as well as the library. The library will also include a children’s section, young adult and adult sections, along with computers for research and training.” “It really will be a terrific amenity for the area that will emphasise recreation in the centre. Locals will be able to Cllr. Darragh Butler meet here and socialise, and it will mean that the centre will have much more to offer its visitors,” she continued. “It will really be something for the entire community to enjoy. Construction is set to begin in the coming weeks with a grand opening planned for September as the children return to school,” she concluded.

Eoghan O’Brien (FF) has warned about the dangerous consequences resulting from the downgrading of the Garda station in Malahide. He told the County Leader, “Unfortunately, with the recent increase in criminal activity in our area, we have been proven correct.” He praised the local Gardaí for the fantastic job that they do for our community. “Their job is being made ever more difficult due to the lack of resources being allocated by the Government, who
nity that the early closure of our Garda station would not affect how our area is policed,” he said. O’Brien also pointed to anomalies in the Government parties’ assessment of what would happen as a result of the downgrading of Malahide station. “It was claimed that there would be more Gardaí on the streets; we now have 32 Gardaí operating out of our station, down from 44. It was also claimed that no prisoners will be transferred to other stations. However,
Lusk Twinning Preparations Well Under Way Twenty years of Twinning will be celebrated in Lusk in May when the village twinning committee will invite their French counterparts to town for an anniversary celebration. Preparations are well underway for the visit, and the Lusk locals plan to give their French friends a very warm, Irish welcome. Two decades ago, Lusk was twinned with
drive prisoners to Coolock, wasting valuable time and taking a patrol car out of circulation,” he said. “Despite other parties insisting that this is not a downgrade, it clearly is. We have also lost two of our five Garda vehicles in our area, which is a 40 per cent reduction in services,” he continued. O’Brien also points out that there has been an increase in burglaries in the area, which is a cause for concern.” Many residents who have been victims of
crime have contacted me to express their concerns. We as a community must continue to fight for the resources that our area needs.” “The downgrade of our station by

On Wednesday, May 8th, a delegation of some 30 people from the French town will enjoy all the hospitality that Lusk has to offer, as 20 years of successful twinning is happily celebrated. A number of activities are planned for the visit including: a visit to County Crest in Lusk, a trip to Glendelough, and lots of local shopping. The group

will also meet the County Mayor, Cllr Cian O’Callaghan and take a tour of the County Council offices here in Swords. The French guests will be kept extremely busy, but will no doubt thoroughly enjoy their eventful visit to Lusk and other areas around the North County and beyond. The residents in Lusk are very much looking forward to welcoming their visitors in May and strengthening the strong bond that already exists between the two towns.

provide you with all your requirements and to give excellent advice. Larger jobs, like paving and decking will give your house an added dimension and can provide that all-important outside room, which can be enjoyed as the long summer evenings arrive.
With Spring well and truly established, it’s a high time to start thinking about, not only the annual Spring cleaning, but also some new and fresh ways to cheer up your home and your garden.
Garden A neatly kept garden is the first impression a visitor gets of your house. This first impression is lasting and if your garden is not kept up to scratch, it’s unlikely that your home will be any better. Now is the perfect time to start tidying up your garden. If you need a major clean-up after the harsh winter and even harsher Spring that we have just endured, you will need to engage the services of a professional landscaper. Luckily there are many such companies here in the North County, who will provide you with a top class service to make sure your garden, the entrance to your home looks at it’s best. With smaller gardens, you may be in a position to undertake small jobs. Sowing a new lawn can be undertaken now, with local garden centres ready to
Trim Your Trees Trim back any climbers where they have grown into eaves or around windows and doors. If you have winter flowering jasmine (Jasminum nudiflorum), it will require trimming and tying back after its seasonal display. Tie in new shoots produced by climbing also. There are many shrubs you may have in your garden which requiring trimming or pruning at this time of year. For example, Buddleia davidii, Leycesteria Formosa require cutting back hard to promote fresh flowering shoots. If you haven’t done so already, you should also cut back your dogwoods to encourage their coloured stems for next winter. Your winter/spring flowering heathers that have

served you well will soon finish flowering.
In The Kitchen It’s easy to get prepared for the Spring in the kitchen. Most likely you’ll be inspired by longer days; cooking a bit lighter food and perhaps trying out some new recipes, so the fresh smell fulfilling the house will give a hint of new not only to your taste buds, but also to the whole house. Why not also get more into freshness by growing your own herbs? The light is indeed the biggest spring maker, so the best way to cheer up your kitchen for the warmer days to come is to let the light flow in. So, leave the dark, heavy curtains for winter and go for some thin, translucent fabric instead. When changing the curtains and blinds, think about all the spring colours and choose the lightest and brightest options. Browse around the local decoration shops here in the North County to get some inspiration and don’t be too shy to try out something totally new, or trust the classic spring colours such as green, yellow and white.

Ireland’s largest indoor showhouse opened it’s doors to the public last week. To celebrate the occasion, Fairco Windows and Doors hosted a Fingal Dublin Chamber Networking evening at their spanking new showrooms at the Old Airport Road in Cloghran on Thursday last, 27th March. The occasion attracted a large gathering of local business people and the company’s very impressive showrooms drew very favourable comment from all there. The showrooms are a permanent ideal homes exhibition and the entire showroom is completely encased in glass. The breathtaking interiors of the timber-framed house
are inspired by Eastern US architecture seen in popular American TV shows. Chamber President, Siobhan Moore praised the company for their foresight in choosing such a prime location and wished them the best for the future. She said that a company such as Fairco will bring a new dimension to the area, and described the showrooms as ‘resembling a film set.’ In reply, Fairco proprietor, Jim Toal was delighted with the large turnout and said he hoped to see as many of the business men and women, who attended in the near future and looked forward to conducting business with them soon.

Bubbles Too
With a background in care, Linda McDaid owner of Bubbles Too Creche, came into childcare almost by accident. Having left her job with a security company, Linda started to look after her friend’s children and found that her caring personality, combined with her love of children was ideally suited to the role. That was 15 years ago and Linda has gone from strength to strength ever since. Trained to one of the highest levels of Vtec childcare, level 6, Linda decided over ten years ago, to start her own business, a business that would make a difference to families and most importantly the children themselves. Choosing a location was an important factor and Linda decided that, due to its close proximity to the M1 motorway, Feltrim would suit commuting parents perfectly. The ethos of the crèche is that all children should be treated equally and with dignity and all of the activities are linked to Aistear, the early childhood curriculum framework. Linda participates in CETS, ECCE and FAS schemes that provide qualifying parents with various options for subsidised childcare. With Bubbles Too Creche, your little ones really couldn’t be in safer hands.

Insightful Rose Information Night In Swords Excitement is in the air as we get ever closer to crowning our Dublin Rose of Tralee. Plenty of planning and preparation is going on behind the scenes in the lead up to the selection nights, and the County Leader have already been speaking to Dublin Rose candidates who are thoroughly enjoying the fantastic experience that goes along with entering the competition. We recently attended a North County Rose Information Night in the Carnegie Court Hotel in Swords to meet the committee and some potential Rose candidates. The night was held, so that anyone who was unsure about the competition could get all the ins and outs and have a chat with the lovely former Dublin Rose, Siobheal NicEochaidh and hard working Rose committee member Amiee. Jessica Corr from Lusk was there to get all the information about the contest and was delighted to chat to Siobheal about her experience, as Siobheal has been through it all before. Jessica told the County Leader that she was “beyond excited” to be taking part and couldn’t wait to meet the other girls involved. Siobheal said that she would encourage anyone who is even remotely thinking of entering the contest to do so because she knows herself,

‘That’s Entertainment’ In Portmarnock
North County Living by Jennifer McShane
Follow The Leader Peter O’Kelly, leader of the Portmarnock Scout Group, has been involved with the scouts since he was 10 years old. His love of the scouts from such a young age transcended into his later life and he has been involved with them in one way or another, ever since. Peter sat down to tell us more about himself, the impact his scout participation has had in his life and why he loves being actively involved in community life. “When I joined my very first scout group with my three brothers at ten years old, there were really very few extra circular activities for children then,” he said. “So this was an ideal outlet, and a great way to mix with other kids.” Peter says the idea of being a member of a scout group, even at that young age, always appealed to him: I’d always like the whole idea of being a scout, and after my first two week camp, that was it. I was hooked and I haven’t looked back since.” He has lived in Portmarnock since June 13th, 1986 (according to his extremely precise memory!) and says he loved the area so much, that he had no desire to move away. “Portmarnock is such a lovely area, with a wonderful community at the heart of it. Myself and my family love being a part of that community, so we were very happy to stay and call it our home.” For those that don’t know, there are a number of different ‘ranks’ in a scout group: Beavers, Cubs, Venture Scouts and the newest addition, the Rovers. These groups within the group, means virtually any age can participate. He had worked his way up all the ranks and became the group leader of the Portmarnock Scout Group many years ago. He is still as actively involved with the group now as he was when he first got involved in the mid eighties. This in itself is a true testament to how much he devotes to the group, not overlooking the fact that he clearly loves every moment of it. “I’ve always loved working with children. Getting to see them grow and accomplish all of their achievements is one of the greatest things about my role as a scout leader.” He says the purpose of any scout group is to try to create good citizens who can overcome various obstacles and think independently. “I think being a scout is fantastic grounding for a child. They get to interact with children of their own age, learn new skills, how to cope when they’re out in the great outdoors, have plenty of new experiences and take on challenges.” He says Portmarnock Scout Group has really come on since he first joined many years ago, and that the group is as busy as ever. They currently have around 120 members and a waiting list of 60 children, all eager to join in the fun. The group try and organise at least one activity per
month, and through these activities the scouts get to put all their training into practice, by doing things like hiking, camping and pioneering. “We want to have the members outdoors as much as we can.” Peter says the group is challenging for its members (in a very good way) and that there is a lot more to it than people might think. The extremely active scout leader says that the success of the group would not be possible at all without the dedication of all the volunteers and leaders: “Everyone that’s involved brings so much energy and commitment to the groups and the different outings, and that’s what really spurs the kids on and gets them enthusiastic.” Peter is a community activist in the highest sense of the word and right from the very start, I can see that he is very much a people person and truly loves helping others and being involved in his local community. He has been rewarded for his efforts numerous times, having won the 2007 ‘Volunteer of the Year award’ and various other scouting honours including the ‘Order of Cu Chulainn,’ the highest accolade achievable in scouting, which he says was one of the highlights as his time in the scouts. He is extremely humble when it comes to speaking of his many awards and says that he simply loves being involved in the community. “I’ve always thought it was great being involved in anything going on in your area. It’s how you get to know all your neighbours and really bond with your entire community.” When he’s not working with the scouts, Peter loves to spend time with his family. His wife Roisin also works in Portmarnock and his two sons, Kieran and Damien have their own businesses, while daughters Aisling and Sinead are working and about to start college. Peter is also a keen writer. He has been writing for 35 years and among his many short stories written, also has 17 of his Ghost Stories (which are rather famous) from the scout group saved up. He says he’d love to try and get his work published some day. He originally started out as a Woodwork apprentice before beginning to work with under privileged offenders. “I’ve always been aware of those that are less fortunate than myself and wanted to give something back.” In terms of future plans, the scout group are about to achieve a great milestone in April as after years of hard work, waiting and fundraising their permanent scout den will at last begin to be built. “The County Council and the entire community have been so wonderful, generous and fully supportive of our efforts with our scout den, and we can’t begin to thank them enough for all there efforts,” Peter concluded.
“I’ve always loved working with children. Getting to see them grow and accomplish all of their achievements.”

Balbriggan School Wins Prestigious Enterprise Award Recently, Balbriggan Community College was the proud recipient of the ‘County Dublin VEC Enterprise Award’ at the recent North County heats of the ‘Student Enterprise Competition’. The award is in recognition of the promotion of business and enterprise within the school. In a very short period of time the school has developed a thriving entrepreneurial spirit amongst the student population. With new and innovative business ideas being entered in both the Student Enterprise and the Junior Dragons Den competitions. With jobs harder and harder to come by, the students of Balbriggan Community College are determined to create their own by starting their own businesses. To date the ideas they have come up with cover a wide range of activities, from educational websites and products to vending machines, funky trainers, smart phone
accessories and craft products. This year the three standout businesses were ‘Zipp-its’ (a trainer with replaceable uppers), ‘IPhonies’ (customised smart phone holders with matching earplugs) and ‘Rub 2 Rule’ (a ruler and eraser combined in one). In recognition of this new found entrepreneurial spirit, the school has decided to add its own entrepreneurial award to their annual student awards, a first for a local, North County school. According to their business teacher Tom Poynton, the next step will be to “bring one or more of these concepts and ideas to full commercial realisation, thus embedding the concept of giving hand ups to others rather than taking handouts.”

Reading initiative In Malahide And Rush Fingal Libraries are delighted to announce that the ‘Battle in the Castle’ reading initiative programme for senior cycle primary school children continues on 16th April at Rush and Malahide libraries with a Viking workshop hosted by Michael Moylan. The reading programme is inspired by the award winning “The Secret of Kells” children’s adventure novel by Eithne Massey, which was made into an awardwinning feature length animated film, and each child received a copy of the book as part of the shared reading programme. The 129 boys and girls from fifth and sixth classes at St. Andrew’s NS Malahide and Rush NS have previously participated in a ‘Designing Shields’ workshop with John Carpenter, and a drama workshop with the Magic Carpet
Company, which reenacted some chapters of the book. The Viking workshop on 16th April will see classes compete against each other for a place in the final part of the programme, the ‘Battle in the Castle’ quiz at Malahide Castle on 24th May, and the winning class will be treated to a full tour of The Book of Kells at Trinity College Dublin. The runners-up will receive a tour of Dublin Airport, kindly arranged by the programme sponsors DAA. Susan Lovatt from Fingal Libraries told the County Leader: “The aim of the programme is to get children reading, and by using a multi-disciplinary interactive.” The Viking Workshops with Michael Moylan take place on 16th April from 10.30-11.30am at Rush Library and 12.301.30pm at Malahide Library.
