Boost For Balbriggan Enterprise Local TD, Alan Farrell (FG) has welcomed Eircom’s planned roll out for fibre broadband in Balbriggan by Easter 2013 as a positive development for business, education and technology infrastructure for the area. This great news comes in the week that Balbriggan officially opened the Fumbally Exchange and the business community here is set to reach new heights. Farrell told the County Leader, “Towns in the North County, such as Swords and Donabate have recently benefited from Eircom’s initial roll out of fibre powered broadband as part of a national plan. Balbriggan will be the next town in the region to receive investment in broadband infrastructure which will benefit businesses and homes in the area Alan Farrell TD from next April. The increased availability in high speed fibre powered broadband is essential for the business community and is expected to have a hugely positive impact on the business community in Balbriggan. Farrell continued, “Access to high speed broadband is essential for business development in this current technology driven environment, not to mention local schools who will benefit as a result of this investment initiative. “Homes and businesses in this area will soon have the opportunity to take advantage of a growing broadband market, and we know that the expansion of the market leads to improved quality and services. Vital infrastructure such as high speed, good quality broadband is invaluable for businesses to communicate and perform effectively within

A Quintessential Community Activist With the passing of Mrs Margaret Thorpe this week, Swords has lost one of its local ‘characters’. She had seen many changes in the town since she came here as a young married woman over sixty years ago. Having come from rural Co. Wicklow, she had to become used to living in the middle of the town, but when she got out and became involved in community groups, she soon endeared herself to all who got to know her. In fact, her house on Main Street was like a community centre, there was always a welcome on the mat and an cup of tea, while local problems were trashed out. Most voluntary groups in Swords will have benefited from her input, like the Horticultural Society, Tidy Towns, Community Council, Historical Society. Her dedication to her local church, St. Columba’s Church of Ireland was well known and she would tirelessly fund-raise for the parish. She served on the Select Vestry and as a governor of the Old Borough School. Well known for riding her bicycle up to about a year ago, she did guiding in Newbridge House, and enjoyed many trips throughout Ireland and England with the Heritage groups. Her rural background came to the fore as a visit to her back garden was a surprise; it was a oasis of peace, beautiful flowers and animals one would not expect to find in Swords Main Street. She also had hens and ducks at one time and all her friends benefited from newly laid eggs. When she was awarded for services to the community a few years ago by the County Council, she was delighted and was then described as ‘the quintessential community activist’ much to her amusement. She will always be remembered for promoting the Swords she became to know and love; “I’m nearly a local” she would say. Indeed, she was promoting the town up to the end; she blessed all the people in her hospital ward with water from St. Colmcille’s Well. Rest in peace Mrs T. BM

Balbriggan resident, Mary King has hit back at the County Council due to the lack of sporting facilities for children around the area. The recent success of our Olympic athletes gave the North County a much needed lift and really brought home the importance of encouraging our children to stay fit and active. With this in mind, Mary, who is a sports coach in Balbriggan told the County Leader that it is more important than ever to have adequate local sporting facilities for young children. “There are just no suitable sporting facilities for young children under 14 in Balbriggan. Many of the clubs that we have here are funded privately, the real issue is the lack of facilitates open to the general public,” she said. “For example, if you’re not a member of a particular sporting club, but still want to play sports, we have no multipurpose facility to accommodate that. There isn’t even decent cycling facilities if your child wants to use his bike

Concern Over Lack Of Youth Facilities In Balbriggan By Jennifer McShane around the area safely - it really is terrible.” Mary feels that Balbriggan has been given the short straw when it comes to this issue: “Balbriggan is one of the largest towns in the North County, so why is it that other towns such as Swords and Donabate have multipurpose community centres for younger children to meet and

Balbriggan has none? Yes, we have parks, but most of the time these are not adequately supervised.” She also points out that Kinsealy has recently got a new community centre. The issue, she says, is even more apparent as we come into the Winter season; the evenings are shorter and colder and young children and their parents
would greatly benefit from an in-door facility. “At this point, I’d even settle for an outdoor facility!” “There needs to be a different community approach taken by the Council to ensure the needs of locals are met. As a parent and resident of the area, I know that many other parents feel the exact same way. This isn’t going to go away and something needs to be done about it because it’s the children that lose out,” she concluded.

Rush Man’s Horrendous Sewage Ordeal The very heavy rain that affected all areas of the North County last week, brought disruption and hardship to many local residents, causing flooding and general inconvenience. But none was more affected than Rush resident, Fergus Giblin, who was faced with the most appalling vista at the height of the deluge. Sixty five year old pensioner, Fergus, who lives at the Willows on the main Rush to Skerries Road beside Clifflands estate, awoke to find raw sewage swirling all over his garden, front and back, which flowed torrent-like
onto the main road. This road is adjacent to built up areas and hundreds of schoolchildren pass by every day on their way to and from school, with the obvious health implications that accrue. He told the County Leader, “Every time there’s heavy rain, the main sewer backs up on to my property. When it all abates, I have to clean up all the sludge. I could see raw sewage flowing past my back door, which was about two inches high. It’s only escape was through my front gargen and onto the main road. The County Council have been out with me in the
past when this happened and they assured me they had a problem and that it won’t happen again. However, I’ve had the same problem on three or four occasions since. I’m at
the end of my tether,” said an exasperated Fergus. He continued, “I’ve been told by a civil engineer that “under no circumstances should surface water flow into a
main sewage system. But that’s exactly what’s happened. I mind my granddaughter here on Fridays and I fear I’ll have to bring her to my daughter’s for her own safety. This is a nightmare,” he said. Fergus has been in contact with the local authority, in the meantime and is awaiting news from them.

The Community Gardai and the new Superintendent Ronan Galligan, will come together to award certificates to all the young people of Swords Youth Group who were involved in the Alcohol Misuse & Knife Crime programme. Following that, the young people and the Gardai will head to Garda H.Q. in Harcourt St and Tara St. Fire Station where they will have an opportunity to have a bird’s eye view of how the Communications section of the Gardai works. They will also gain an understanding of how a 999 call is processed and the follow up of it. It is set to be a busy, but educational day of fun. Earlier this year, the group came together for two evenings to partake in this programme. Its aim was to break down barriers and challenge attitudes between the young people and the Gardaí, therefore, creating an opportunity to build up positive, sustainable relationships between both groups. The idea for this originally came from local community Sargent, Kevin Toner.
Great Family Day At Naul Tractor Run The inaugural Naul Harvest Festival took place on Sunday, 16th September last and it incorporated a Tractor Run in aid of St James’s Hospital Oncology Unit and the IRFU Charitable Trust. Event organiser, Donal Killian was thrilled with the response of the public to the event. “The Tractor Run was a magnificent success. We had a total of 57 tractors on the day, despite the bad weather conditions and the pressure on farm machinery to continue harvesting after a wet summer,” he said. The route was marshalled by Thomas Garry and his motorcycle group and the local Gardai. The route brought the tractors from Naul to Damastown and on to Garristown. After stopping for refreshments at Donnelly’s pub in Clonalvey, the weary drivers made their way back to Naul Village, where there was a marquee with music, bouncy castles and a BBQ. The money collected amounted to a very impressive €5,500. “We are delighted with this great sum, particularly in times of recession,” said Donal, who had great praise for ‘Mr Tractor Run’ himself, the tireless Barney
Greene. The raffle winner was local girl, Lauren Doyle. “Barney and his tractor men responded magnificently. It is a great opportunity to build the Naul Harvest Festival around the Tractor Run and have a family fun day in the village,” said Donal. He paid special tribute to the local businesses for their generosity and to the IRFU for supplying a signed Irish rugby jersey and for the raffle at the viewing of the Heineken Cup, which was present on the day. This event was so well received that plans are now underway for the second Naul Harvest Festival and 15th September 2013 has already been earmarked for the occasion.

Very ‘Frostie’ Swim Official Opening Of Fumbally Exchange In Skerries The famed ‘Frosties’ sea-swimmers stepped out into the cold waves again for their annual Frostie Mile race on September 22nd last. A fantastic day was had by all, with local man Martin Walsh emerging the winner after a tough, but rewarding swim. Speaking to the County Leader, he said: “I’d just like to thank everyone for their well-wishes after the race. I’m not a great swimmer, but it was fantastic to be among great people, with some great food, drink and music to celebrate afterward. This cup will be well looked after this year!” The race saw dozens of hardy sea swimmers take on the challenge of Pictured here is Martin completing a mile in Walsh who won the annual Mile swim race held open water off the Frostie in Skerries recently. Skerries shore. The difficulty of the challenge meant that only swimmers who have swum the course at least once before the race would be allowed to compete this year. When Peter Carr, Dermot Murphy and Eamonn Kearney decided to name the year-round sea swim group in Skerries ‘ The Frosties’ back in 2000 and lobbied the council for repairs to the bathing areas, little did they know just how much the group would achieve. While continuing to swim daily come hail or come shine, they have pioneered some outrageously-long distance swims along the coast and outlying islands and this year’s swim was a great testament to them and all of the organisers and participants who took part. The organisers would like to thank everyone who took part and congratulate all the winners and participants. All proceeds from the swim went to Skerries RNLI, who were very happy with the takings on the day. The volunteer crew as RNLI Skerries very much appreciate all the fundraising done on their behalf. The charity depends on fundraising and legacies to keep the service around our coasts going, its volunteer crew well trained and its lifeboats fully maintained and ready to put to sea at minutes notice.
There was a major boost for enterprise in Balbriggan last Wednesday, with the official opening of Fumbally Exchange in Railway Street. The award winning charity, which enables like minded professionals, who may have lost their jobs in the recession to work together, is expected to have a major effect on enterprise in the town. The concept is the brainchild of recipient of the Arthur Guinness Fund Social Entrepreneur 2011, George Boyle. The opening was attended by Minister for Health, Dr James Reilly and included many business people from Balbriggan and further afield. Fumbally Exchange is a community of small businesses, sole traders and start-ups, whose aim is to cultivate an atmosphere for creative and regenerative growth. For as little as €50 per week, entrepreneurs, creative professionals and
start-ups can rent a fully-serviced desk in shared office space in a convivial, co-operative environment. Professionals like architects, designers, project managers, entrepreneurs and small businesses who may have been left unemployed, will share ideas and help each other. They will be facilitated in the same building with their own meeting rooms and canteen facilities. It is a job creating opportunity for professionals in a collaborative environment. It incorporates the sharing of space, ideas, energy and innovation. Railway Street was chosen as the preferred location for the project. Architect, Aoife Banim told the County Leader, “Railway Street is the ideal location for Fumbally Exchange. It will bring much needed footfall to the area and will regenerate this part of the town. Due to it’s proximity to the
05
Railway station, it is regarded as the entrance to Balbriggan. President of Balbriggan Chamber, Kevin Tolan, said, “Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce has supported Fumbally Exchange from its inception. The official opening was a huge success and It is a breath of fresh air for Railway Street and to bring new employment to this area is particularly poignant, as it was once the main working street in Balbriggan. The terraced housing in Clonard Street and Chapel Street nearby were constructed for the workers in the Linen Mills on Railway street. In Fumbally Exchange, there is a deluge of talent, imagination, artistic flair, and positivity under one roof – which can only lead to success !” A definite air of positivity was evident at this opening and the arrival of Fumbally Exchange is rightly regarded as a vital, further step in the resurgence of Balbriggan, as a desirable place to set up business. M
illfield Shopping Centre in Balbriggan opened its door in April 2011 with an impressive 80,000sq. metre development. Since then it has put Balbriggan on the map as an up and coming shopping destination. Located close to the M1 Motorway off the Exit 6 junction, it is both convenient and accessible to commuters and locals alike and attracts a loyal customer base in the North Fingal area. One of the added advantages that Millfield has is its free car parking which has proved to be a huge success and a major incentive in attracting customers to the centre. Also the ease of access to the centre from all directions has contributed to its growing success. Millfield’s anchor tenant is a Tesco Extra which is the largest in Dublin and operates 24 hours per day carrying a complete range including grocery, clothing, hardware and electronics to name but a few departments. Another great attraction for Millfield is McDonald’s who also operate a 24 hour Restaurant and Drive Thru facility which proves to be a popular destination in the area. Since its opening, Millfield has secured a number of well-known tenants providing fashion, stationery, books, cosmetics, health and nutrition, giftware, electronics, pharmacy, opticians, discount stores, food court and many

forgotten about and this should be seen as a great opportunity for shops in the town centre to avail of the spill over from Millfield. We will be anxious to work closely with the Chamber to ensure that this potential is fully realised. We need to capitalise on the great potential of Millfield Shopping Centre," he said.
more. This has given Balbriggan a long awaited boost in the retail sector and changed the face of shopping in the area. Employment in Balbriggan has seen a significant increase since the centre opened and the stores in Millfield now employ in the region of four hundred people making it a leader in employment in the area. This is a major benefit to the community as it is retaining employment not only in Balbriggan, but in the surrounding areas as well. As Millfield is now a key part of the community it has opened its doors to local charities and locally based clubs. Some of these charities include CASA (Caring and Sharing Association), Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind and Irish Autism Action. Millfield has been involved in sponsorship with Balbriggan
Rugby Club and Skerries Sailing Club amongst others. The success of Millfield has been welcomed as a great boost to Balbriggan. President of Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce, Kevin Tolan recognised the enterprise which the centre has provided for the locality. He said, "Balbriggan Chamber welcomes the local employment generated by Millfield and wishes the new businesses many happy years in Balbriggan. It is important that we improve the links between the town centre and Millfield in a more effective way, so that both Millfield and Balbriggan town centre can benefit from the additional footfall." Similarly, Cathaoirleach of Balbriggan Town Council, Larry Dunne said. "It is great to see such a large development in Balbriggan. For many years we were
There is no doubt that Millfield Shopping Centre has, in its short time in Balbriggan, brought a new freshness and excitement to local retailing. It's potential to attract shoppers and visitors from far and wide must be seen as a tremendous boost to the area, while at the same time, acting as a conduit in exposing the many attractions and charms that the historic town of Balbriggan and it's surrounds has to offer to visitors.

We all like to visit our relatives’ graves on anniversaries, birthdays and other important times and we feel proud when the grave has been revamped, which provides great consolation for families. they can also provide additional inscriptions to existing stones. Patrick says," We at McNally's pride ourselves in providing a wide range of new headstones, as well as delivering great value in restoration of old headstones. We will inspect the old headstone and foundations and give our professional advice on the works that need to be carried out and a costing of the works. Most of the older headstones in cemeteries are of limestone or white marble and it is their nature as porous stones to attract dirt and grime as well as airborne fungi which leaves them illegible. The process of cleaning them
AFTER while work is being carried out. A complete sweep up or wash down is our final duty while making sure all neighbouring graves as well as
the one restored are in perfect order before leaving the cemetery. People have attempted to restore headstones on their own at times. This more often than not results in more damage to the stone than good, and by doing so can result in a greater costs in getting it put right by professional stonemasons. Today, however, headstones are usually made of polished granite and when erected need only the wipe of a wet sponge and clean cloth to restore to as good as new. There are also stones where parts of them are bushhammered or honed, ie. unpolished. These stones will attract that same dirt and grime and we would advise to go all polished in order to be virtually maintenance free. This is only advice as we all know beauty is in the eye of the
beholder, even in headstones. McNally's provide one of the widest range of grave accessories in the entire country including lanterns, statues, granite hearts, vases, scrolls, teddies, bibles and various religious items. They also provide memorial cards, book markers, wallet cards and memorial key rings. You can have a plaque inscribed with your own personal

McNally' have just created a new web site at www.mcnallysfuneraldirectors.ie where you can visit them and see photos of flowers and headstones as well as useful information to help you at the time of a funeral or if you are just looking for something nice to remember a loved one by. McNally's funeral directors carry out funeral services all over North county Dublin including Balbriggan, Skerries, Naul, G a r r i s t o w n , Stamullen, Lusk, Rush and Julianstown to name but a few. Landscaping Excellence The ever-changing seasons here in Ireland means that our gardens can suffer as a result. As we are into Autumn and approaching the Winter season, it’s time to think how best to improve and maintain our gardens, so they will flourish throughout the cold weather. Your garden may need extra maintenance for the new season, particularly if you haven’t had time to tend to it during Summer. Keeping your garden in good shape will show off your home in the best light. It is vital to keep lawns well maintained and boundaries well edged. You will be astounded at the difference this can make.
BEFORE
If you own a smaller garden, perhaps it is relatively easy to keep in top shape. However, if you have a larger garden and struggle to maintain it during the year, it’s time to get help from the expert professionals at the keenest prices, Virgoe McEnery. Award winning Swords based landscaping company, Virgoe McEnery is a family owned business which takes pride in delivering a unique product for their clients, both commercial and domestic. The company pride themselves on doing a meticulous clean job of the highest quality, on all the gardens they tend to throughout the year. Business for the company began in 1999, when Michael McEnery and his wife and business partner, Tracy Virgoe decided to embark on a journey that would see their landscaping business go from strength to strength. Michael enthusiastically spoke about the expertise of his highly trained staff. “We have recruited and developed a team of workers who share our commitment to customer service. They are trained and certified in all aspects of landscaping and are backed by our qualified management team who monitor the progress of every project. We have the capacity to meet all of our ongoing needs and opportunities to provide for continued growth of the company,” he said. The company are members of the ALCI, are fully insured and have built an impressive profile of both hard and soft landscaping projects. Michael stresses, “We can also provide customers with a free computer visualisation of a home, before and after paving, should you wish to avail of this service. They are always amazed at the transformation. We have in-house paving specialists that have been trained in all aspects of paving that includes driveways paths, patios in all paving blocks

and sandstone. All types of Michael McEnery and his wife and business partner, Tracy Virgoe fencing you may need is supplied and fitted. Concrete post and timber panel, chain link timber post and rail stud fencing, weldmesh fencing, palisade fencing and all repairs are part of the service provided. Customer satisfaction is all important to Michael and his team. “At Virgoe McEnery, we also have a list of questions which we pose to our clients, including if they are satisfied and how we can improve our service. This feedback is important to BEFORE us and reflects our desire to achieve customer satisfaction,” he enthused. In the present economic climate, people are reluctant to move and they decide to improve their homes instead. The garden is now viewed as an extra room, which is to be enjoyed by the entire AFTER family in all seasons and this can be a particular challenge to some in the colder seasons, so that is where we come in. Garden enhancement is now seen as a vital part of home improvement and is something that this progressive company is all too well aware of. Michael added, “We have the expertise and machinery to complete any job, no matter the size and our value for money will come as a pleasant surprise as well,” he said. BEFORE With many landscaping companies feeling the pressure and having to cutback on services, it is pleasing to see a company with such a client friendly approach, quality products and high standards. A call to Virgoe McEnery will address all of your landscaping needs as we come into AFTER the Winter season.

DAA Dance Strictly For Charity A Strictly Come Dancing charity event hosted by DAA and Suttonians Rugby Club, took place in The Regency Hotel on Thursday, 20th September last. The event, which was attended by over 1000 people, raised approximately €15,000 with €7,500 going each to DAA Charity of The Year Barretstown and Suttonians. The event was streamed live and reached 11 countries with 600 hits. Suttonians couple, Adam Griggs and Jane Greally won the overall prize, which was decided by audience votes. DAA couple,
Daniel Sheridan and Amanda McGarry were in 2nd place with Laura O’Flynn and Derek Keatley, from Suttonians coming 3rd. Siobhan Moore, DAA Charity of the Year Chairperson, warmly congratulated the DAA dancers: “This was a fantastic personal achievement from all the DAA staff who took part – to learn to dance ballroom in a few weeks and compete is an incredible feat. We are especially proud of Daniel Sheridan and Amanda McGarry who came second in the competition. This event is an example of an innovative fun idea that can be both entertaining but also raise much needed funds for charity and we congratulate Brian O’Malley and his team on their achievement in bringing this night to fruition,” she said.
