Council Dismissive Of Residents Our recent report on the appalling condition of roads and particularly speed ramps in Rush, has generated a massive response from our readers from all quarters of the region. We have been inundated with stories of people being given short shrift by the Council in their attempts to get the local authority to claim responsibility for the unacceptable condition of our roads. Whilst our article focused on the condition of speed ramps in Rush, it now appears that the same problem is everywhere to be seen. What seems to be particularly galling to readers, is the apparently dismissive attitude of the local authority to the genuine complaints of residents, whose cars had serious and very expensive damage inflicted upon them, as a result of the poor conditions of the speed ramps all over the North County. Even complaints from people who are just concerned for the safety of both motorists and pedestrians have been treated in a cavalier fashion, insofar as the local authority refuses to take responsibility for the condition of the roads and the obviously inferior products used in the manufacture of the potentially dangerous red ramps. One such person is Swords resident, Marco Barody who highlighted the condition of the speed ramps on the Forest Road in Swords to the council. Marco thought he was acting in a civic and responsible manner, but his efforts to relay his message were met with less than enthusiasm. He told the County Leader, “I thought that being a member of the community, having lived here for seven years, I would inform the council of the situation, as they may not be aware, so I decided to go to the council offices in Swords. I was informed that there was no one to talk to me at this time and I should write in. I

By Patrick Finnegan was furious as I couldn’t see the point of the offices being open to the public if no one will speak with me. I then decide to email the Head of the Roads department and explain my concerns over the state of the road with emphasis on the speed ramps crumbling. I explained the dangers to all, including pedestrians as the eroding layers are “flying off on to the footpath” and may cause injury to the walkers.” The reply from the council read, “Regarding the Forest Road to the Boroimhe Road, Swords, the maintenance issues on this road will be addressed when the relevant funding can be sourced and the relevant sources subse-

quently become available. The issue regarding the speed ramps in the area will be addressed when resources and budgets become available.” In the meantime, Marco’s wife had the misfortune to hit a pothole causing tyre damage on a back road outside Swords. “I asked for this to be paid and was sent a list including NCT copies, mileage, as well as photographing the road in question. This is not possible as the road is dangerous at the best of times and does not allow you to stop and get out taking photographs without real danger to your safety. Again I replied to this and asked for them to reconsider the details they have requested and have received no reply. I reiterated my request ten days later and yet again, no reply, concluded Marco

Fingal Dublin Chamber Business Excellence Award 2010

Swords Park Is A Sore Sight The local authority’s apparent lack of interest in the maintenance of Swords Park, is set to cause headaches for tourist agencies whose prime focus is on providing a good first impression of the town. The park is adjacent to the castle and the Main Street and is an obvious place for visitors to relax and enjoy this wonderful amenity. The council now appear to have adopted an ad hoc approach to cutting the grass and maintaining the area. The result of this spasmodic cutting means that a large amount of cut grass is left ungathered and is very dirty and damaging to clothes, thus affecting the pleasure of park users. The opening up of Swords Castle to the public was a great idea, designed to generate pleasure and a community sprit. This did happen initially and seeing families, children and tourists browsing through the park surrounding the castle gave a great sense to the town. Mothers and toddlers regularly gathered here and it provided a safe haven away from the hustle and bustle of Swords town life. Many employees of local firms use the park to have their lunch, including many council employees, who had been promised seating outside the council offices, which failed to materialise. Now, cut

grass, which is dirty and containing litter and other nasty substances is proving a deterrent to this simple lunchtime pursuit. Schoolchildren regularly use the park and meet to discuss the events of the day. The castle is the first place many tourists visit when they come to Swords. Many local families are drawn to the area where they enjoy playing games with their children on the pristine lawns, providing hours of enjoyment to many. This however, is where the dream ends, as recently the gardens are being neglected by the council and the lovely riverbank is now overgrown with ugly weeds and nettles and the lovely lawns are being replaced with meadowland. This first impression of the region’s capital will do nothing to promote visitor numbers and is set to have a detrimental effect on the efforts of the hard working Tidy Towns committee. It is not really good for the community to have what some call the ‘Jewel of Swords’ being overgrown like this. This is not only providing opportunities for illegal dumping and anti social behaviour, but it’s preventing our tourists and residents from enjoying this amenity that was once a place to be proud of and where children and teenagers could be seen enjoying games and get togethers. There are still tractor marks on the ground caused by trailers when lugging equipment into the park to provide much welcomed entertainment for the community and tourists alike. Park users told the County Leader, “that there is no excuse for the council not to have dealt with these unslightly remnants of last winter and pay more attention to this beautiful natural facility right on the doorstep of the Main Street. What kind of an example is the local authority setting for residents and tourists? This is an open invitation to teenagers and others at a loose end to get up to anti social behaviour and skullduggery, if action is not taken immediately. The sight of different groupings on a fine summer’s day is a joy to behold. We hope that the local authority will do all they can to ensure that the sounds of summer will continue to be heard around Swords Park.

Balbriggan Students Successful Fundraiser Students from Loreto College Secondary School in Balbriggan recently held a teacher and student Easter Egg Raffle in their school to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland. The girls sourced over 15 great prizes for the raffle, including two large Easter egg hampers with the help of their teacher, Ms Karen Ryan. The raffle took place during the ‘Say it with Flowers - 65 Roses Awareness and

Fundraising Week’ between the 8th and 15th of April. Many young children find it difficult to pronounce “Cystic Fibrosis” and often learn how to by saying the phrase “65 Roses.” Cystic Fibrosis is the most common life-threatening inherited disease in Ireland with around one in 19 people carrying the CF gene. The students raised €310 in total and presented it to the charity.

One of our regular readers, Lar Sheeran, spotted this remarkable headstone in a Malahide graveyard recently. It tells a story or two, depending on what way you look at it. Peter and Eliza sound like the perfect couple, or was that the old ways of the world. Nowadays it would be hard to find people living together for 20 years. The story could be one of true love or one of perseverance. Whatever the story is they were doing something right to live together for an amazing 80 years. Balbriggan’s Champion Powerlifters Powerlifting is not a sport for the faint hearted. To compete successfully requires discipline as well as both physical and mental strength. A trio of Balbriggan men are currently rewriting the record books as they achieve medal success at national level to bring a bit of sporting pride to the town in these harsh times. The lads, Robbie Carr, John Carroll and Stephen McGuinness have all recently won medals

By Bob McKenzie at the National Powerlifting Championships in Belfast and are now targeting European glory later this month in Bournemouth. That they have medalled so quickly after taking up the sport is a proof of their raw talent. Robbie Carr told the County Leader, “I started training seriously around six weeks ago to get ready for Belfast. John Carroll, the

owner of Pro Fitness Gym where we train suggested it and he competes too. So I thought I would try it for the craic.” There is a lot of strength and power training. It is legs one day, chest another and I train three days a week,” he said. In competition the weights are astonishing with Robbie bench pressing 80 kilos, deadlifting 210 kilos and squatting 150 kilos. John Carroll is the man who encouraged

Robbie and Steven and he’s no slouch himself. “It’s great to see young lads doing strength and conditioning work. To have three national champions in the space of a few weeks is a brilliant achievement. I competed in February, winning the title and breaking the Irish record in the deadlift. I won the nationals and just missed out on the Irish record by 10 kilos. I would settle for something similar at the Europeans in England alright. Maybe between the three of us we can inspire others to give it a shot,” said Robbie. The lads will be competing in the E u r o p e a n Championships later this month and are hoping that local

North County businesses might get in contact looking to sponsor them as they try to add to their impressive medal collection.

After much debate over years about the ownership of the Old Graveyard in Portmarnock (adjacent to the Portmarnock Hotel Golf Links), new evidence has now confirmed that the County Council inherited ownership. This new information comes courtesy of local Labour Councillor, Peter Coyle. “The Graveyard and ruined Church for centuries was under the control of the Church of Ireland. However, the Church of Ireland was disestablished by an Act of Parliament in 1869. On disestablishment its property was transferred to the Commissioners of Church Temporalities in Ireland. “It appears that this monu-

under Balrothery Union as Burrow and in the parish of Portmarnock.” Officially, the Balrothery Union was a forerunner of the local authority, and its assets transferred to

Dublin County Council. The correspondence received from the National Monuments Service in relation to the ownership of the old Portmarnock Graveyard was referred to the Council’s Law Agent for legal advice. It seems to be now confirmed that the local authority are the owners. In anticipation of the registration, grass cutting and weeding will now take place. Basic maintenance will also be carried out to the church ruin subject to the necessary consents being obtained. “Over the past couple of years, the local Portmarnock Lions Club have been involved in carrying out substantial maintenance of the graveyard, after it had become overgrown. There are many people in north Dublin and abroad that have relatives buried in this old graveyard, and it is now welcome news that ownership is established and the protection of the graveyard comes under local authority and national control,” according to Coyle. The Lions Club hope to continue to be involved in partnership with the Council and guidance from the National Monument Service.

Donabate Golf Club paid tribute to their long-serving professional, Hugh ‘Stonewall’ Jackson, who has retired. Jackson, or Jacko as he’s more commonly known, officially began his retirement last week, and the members of Donabate gave him a farewell to remember. Members, professionals, friends and family joined the “living legend” on the fairways, followed by a presentation that evening. Club Captain, Pat McNeill, Lady Captain, Pauline Byrne and President, Charlie Donnelly were joined by progolfer, Arnold O’Connor, a long-time

By Sinead Walsh friend of Hugh. O’Connor began his tribute by reading out a letter from an old friend of Stonewall’s, expressing regret he could not be there, but passing on his best wishes and kind words. The letter turned out to be from legendary Welsh golfer, Ian Woosnam. Pauline Byrne described Jackson as a “true gentleman”, a sentiment reiterated by many throughout the night. Club Captain, Pat McNeill spoke of the great legacy Jackson will leave, in the form of the young players in Donabate Golf Club. “It is ironic that as we lose one star, another comes in, in the

shape of Gavin Moynihan. Hugh’s name will be synonymous with the stars of the future, he has given them so much.” At the end of the speeches, President Donnelly presented Hugh with an honorary lifetime of free membership. An emotional Hugh was thankful for everything that the club had given him. Speaking to the County Leader, he said “I’ve been here 30 years, and I’m very proud of everything we’ve achieved, and so thankful for this tonight.” Donabate Golf Club may have lost a legend, but his legacy will live on for many more rounds.

A North County Cricket Legend

Amanda O’Brien - Portmarnock Twenty two year old Amanda O’Brien from Portmarnock is the next lovely girl up for the Dublin selection of the Rose of Tralee. Amanda is part of a very big family of four girls and three boys. Amanda told the County Leader, “I love having a big family and we are all so close to each other. My big sister Jenny is also my best friend and she has two children. My brother David has a little girl, my brother Johnny has a son and my other brother Mark has a son and is expecting another one. My two little sisters Grace 18 and Shauna 12 are still in school and are the best in the world. I would describe my family as gymaholics, we all love the healthy life style and were not into drinking or smoking much. I love the gym and go up to four times a week. It’s Mi Gym here in Swords and they have even agreed to be my sponsor for the Rose of Tralee.” Amanda’s parents Marian and David, have always been a big support to her and all of their children and growing up with such a big family has been of great benefit to this bubbly girl. Amanda’s dad, David is well known around the area as he is a coach driver with Malahide Coaches and works on the school run. Her mum is a housewife and Amanda describes them as “Amazing’. She attended St Marnocks primary and St Mary’s secondary. While she was in school, Amanda was a member of Portmarnock Adventure Club (PAC). She loved it and spent a lot of time doing activities and her family were also involved. She went hiking, swimming, canoeing and her favourite of all were the dancing competitions. Amanda and the crew from PAC were very successful dancers and won lots of medals and trophies. Throughout secondary school Amanda volunteered with the Arch Club in Portmarnock. The club provides a secure social environment for people with special needs. Amanda enjoyed helping out there and still has friends there and they raised funds with PAC for the Arch Club. Once finished school Amanda started working at The Carnegie Crout Hotel’s night club, Velvet. She had many duties including PA and event managing. She then moved on to another club in Dublin called 21’s and was also involved in promotional work. Amanda has completed various courses since leaving school including IT courses and recently graduated from Colaiste Dhulaigh with a qualification in fashion and design. Amanda continued, “I really enjoyed Colaiste Dhulaigh and I have decided that I want to work with make-up as I find it really interesting and love the creativity of it. I’m going to Portobello Institute in September to study for a degree in Make up Artistry and can’t wait.” Amanda’s motto in life is, “No matter what heavy struggles come through life, I’m going to shine at the other end. I believe I can do anything if I put my mind to it”.

ricket international John Mooney has been a fantastic ambassador for Ireland on the world stage through his success and passion on the cricket pitch. Born in Balbriggan, raised in Balrothery and now living in Rush, John describes scoring the winning runs in Bangalore on 2nd March this year which secured Ireland's memorable victory over England, as 'a magical moment.' Similar to Ray Houghton, forever remembered as the man who scored against England in Ireland's historic victory in Euro '88, John will be remembered for scoring the vital winning runs. On the morning of the match, holed up in his hotel in Bangalore, John logged on to Cricket Ireland's You Tube TV station to hear Ray Houghton urging the team to 'stay calm, get out there, and give it everything you have,' certainly a good omen in John's detailed match preparation. “I have the same routine before every game which involves packing gear away in a certain order, sitting in the same seat on the bus and listening to whatever music gets me in the zone. The important song is the one I'm listening to as I get off the bus, it has to be something that gets me motivated and often I choose Eminem. That day I listened to 'Joxer Goes to Stuttgart' by Christy Moore and it was absolutely incredible.' Despite travelling across the globe with his sport, John is deeply rooted to his local area and particularly his local club North County, based in Balrothery. He mentions looking back at footage from his local pub ‘The Balrothery Inn’ during the historic game, as one of his World Cup highlights. It reminded him of the excitement of Ireland winning the Rugby Grand Slam in 2009. Immersed in sport John played underage soccer for Glebe North and plays gaelic football for Man O' War. He laughs that he 'is still in pain' from last Saturday week’s match. He supports the Dubs and despite wearing a Liverpool jersey he 'fell out with Premiership soccer due to the lack of sportsmanship.' Wondering if cricket affects his social life, John laughs, “It always has. Even at 18 and 19, I would be the first to leave a party but it kept me away from too much trouble. I've always loved the game so it's never been too big a sacrifice.” John describes a typical days training. “Yesterday I got up at half eight and went to the gym for a full session. After lunch, I chilled out for a while with Helena and Alisha,” John's fiancé and young daughter. “I was then training last night with my club North County from six until nine.” Around this time he'll start back training with Ireland and his daily routine will involve gym in the morning, training with the Irish team in the afternoon, and coaching the young lads at North County in the evening time.' John received a full time contract with Cricket Ireland in January 2010, and 'it's going really well.' As part of his role he visits local schools, including Balrothery National School where he was a pupil. He is extremely proud of the cricket tradi-

tion in the North County and tells me about the Leprechaun Cup, a competition for primary schools across Dublin. When it began, eight to 10 teams took part, including Milverton, Balrothery, and Rush National School. “It all really started in these little areas and now it has spread across the county with 36 schools competing in it.” John and his older brother Paul, who also played cricket for Ireland, but now lives in New Zealand, developed a love of the game from their dad John. Sadly John died in 1993 aged just 46 while cricket training in Balbriggan. “My dad loved cricket and running and actually ran for Ireland. I suppose if he had to die it would be doing either of those things.' John was recently presented with the player of the year award for 2010, named in honour of Alan Ruddock, the cricket journalist who also died tragically in 2009 while playing the game he loved. It hasn't always been plain sailing for John and there have been disappointments along the way. Having spent four years

John Mooney

training really hard, he only got to play two games for Ireland at the 2007 World Cup, a 'heartbreaking' experience. However, in typically stoic fashion he took a year out to work on his game and finish his electrical apprenticeship with Fás in Baldoyle. He travelled to Australia for five months, working as an electrician, a trade he loves, but also improving his cricket game and he returned rejuvenated. He acknowledges that this time away was difficult for his fiancé Helena and their young daughter Alisha. Helena, Alisha and his mam, Frances travel to tournaments with John whenever possible and over the past few years have accompanied him to the Caribbean, England and India. As it is too expensive for them to travel all the time, email and Skype provide an important link with home. Not wishing to be drawn on the current controversy over Ireland's potential exclusion from the 2015 World Cup, John believes it should be left to Warren Deutrom the Chief Executive Officer of Cricket Ireland to lobby for their inclusion. The Irish cricket team, have found a space in people's hearts worldwide and their game against England attracted an audience of over a billion people. During their time in Mumbai they visited gravely ill patients in the Hope Foundation Centre established and run by Irish volunteers, an experience John describes as 'humbling.' Asked about his plans for the future, John hopes to spend the next 10 years as a professional cricketer for Ireland. “I look at Trent Johnston who is 36 and I know that if I stay in good shape I can keep going until at least that age.' He is enthusiastic about the International Cricket Pitch being built in Malahide and visualises a North County Dublin representative side comprising teams from Malahide, North County, The Hills (which includes Rush and Balbriggan) playing against other representative teams from across the country. “A cricketer can aim to play for their representative team and then hopefully play for Ireland.” The final part of John's dream is that should this come to pass he would captain and coach this team to become leaders of representative cricket within Ireland. Saying goodbye to him, on a sunny morning in Rush, I am struck by how loyal John is to those he has met through his life and how he uses his success in a sport he loves to bring a smile to many faces. He is a wonderful role model for our younger generation, showing the rewards, commitment and dedication to a dream can bring. He is not motivated by financial gain but by the love of cricket, and he is deeply embedded and proud of his North County Dublin roots.

Balbriggan Educate Together Moves In

Reform Of Grants To Help North County Students The Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairi Quinn TD, announced that a single student grant awarding authority is to replace the existing 66 grant awarding bodies. The new system will come into effect for the 2012/13 academic year. Deputy Brendan Ryan (Lab) welcomes this reform in how student grants will be administered, highlighting how the system is clearly overloaded in the North County, resulting in late outcomes to applications and late payments for students. “The County Council has done a sterling job over the years administering student grant applications : however it is clear that the ever-increasing volume of applications has overburdened the local authority, as it has all over the country. Ryan continued “I have every confidence that when the new system comes into full effect, the students of the North County will benefit from a more streamlined and efficient service. Students can look forward to other improvements to the student grants scheme for the 2011/12 academic year when it is intended to introduce a single unified scheme to replace the four existing schemes. Subsequently, an independent appeals board will be established.

to different stimuli, helps develop their neural networks. Recent research has proven that exposure to music at a very young age can act as a stimulus to ‘wire up’ the brain more rapidly and speed up a child’s mental development. Music can help significantly with language development in babies and small children. As babies start to babble, they are picking up the ‘phonemes’ or building blocks of their own language. Babies will imitate sounds and make melodic experimentations, and using simple rhythmic patterns and rhymes like those found in our well known nursery rhymes and songs helps them to make meaningful sounds and eventual words. Playing instruments, dancing, clapping, movement and simple action songs, all help with your child’s motor control and develop their general coordination. Jo Jingles Music and Movement classes offer age appropriate classes, with restricted numbers and provide every child with an instrument in a fun and safe environment. They provide a clear learning progression as your child grows through structured, well planned and varied programmes. Classes include, music, dancing,

action songs, nursery rhymes and for the older children, a very gentle and fun introduction to pitch and dynamics etc. Jo Jingles classes are now enrolling for the summer term in the Rush Community Centre on a Wednesday morning and in the Skerries Sailing Club on Friday mornings. Andy told the County Leader, “I have never seen my uncles with out their beards and I’m 34 so I really am looking forward to it. Jim had his beard shaved in the Isle Of Man in 1997 to raise funds for a helicopter charity and has never shaved since that.” Sponsor cards are available from Andy at 086-8414592

No Supermarket For Seatown Road By Leslie Murphy St. Colmcille’s Parish in Swords, has changed plans to sell part of its lands to facilitate the development of a new Aldi supermarket on Seatown Road. Residents and politicians strongly objected to the Parish’s decision last autumn to sell 1.57 acres of it’s site for the construction of the food store and car park. The County Leader highlighted this problem at the time and there were many concerns from residents, including the fact that the supermarket would be on one of the town’s busiest roads which would add to traffic volumes. An offer from the supermarket chain, which was entirely dependent on planning permission being attained, had been accepted, as the church looked to

By Leslie Murphy date. Light and airy chick-lit will always have its place on the shelves, but Ciara's debut novel proved itself to be more than that and Saving Grace. In 2010, Ciara followed her first novel’ Becoming Scarlett’. Speaking to the County Leader, Ciara explains that “although there were times when she tried to emulate her heroes - Marian Keyes and Helen Fielding - ultimately attempting to write like someone else is as hopeless as trying to look like someone else”. Reading Ciara's comfortable, chatty style of writing leaves you with the feeling that you have been hanging out with your own friends, rather than a group of fictional characters and it is this sense of reality that ensures Ciara's

pay off a €1.3 million overdraft and generate funds for a new office and parish centre development at the same location. However, in light of ‘a number of factors, the parish has decided to drop the proposal and will instead aim to garner finance through the sale of two properties on the adjoining North Street and through fundraising events. Parish priest, Fr Cyril Mangan said, ‘We won’t be proceeding, it won’t be developed and we’ve taken into consideration the community feeling and of what was going to best serve our interests. There were a number of factors, like respect for residents and difficulty with planning.” Development work on the former parochial house, located on the same site, is continuing, with the first phase completed and the building is on course to open as a new parish office within eight months, depending on funding. The parish are selling properties at 42 and 44 North Street at the moment and hopefully can start on phase two soon.

Donabate Writer Set For Glittering Career Donabate resident and emerging writer, Ciara Geraghty is certainly grabbing the attention of readers in the North County and beyond. Having spent her younger years in Malahide and now living with her own young family in Donabate, Ciara is the North County’s very own bestselling author and has just released her third book Finding Mr Flood. While working in insurance for ten years the notion of making a living as a successful novelist never crossed Ciara's mind. But that was until she signed herself up for a creative writing course and her thoughts began to spill out. This opened a new chapter in her life which has left Ciara proudly responsible for three immensely successful novels to

work oozes with authenticity. Writing down your thoughts and producing them in novel form for the critics to pounce can be daunting and Ciara likens it to “taking off all your clothes in the middle of O'Connell Street and asking people to give you

marks out of ten” but it always comes with a great sense of achievement. She laughs at the idea that the girl who received a D in honours English had two major publishers interested in her first offering and just weeks after the release of her third book she is already teasing out an inkling of an idea for her fourth - due to be published in spring 2012.

Speaking at the launch of the blog, Pat O’Doherty, Executive Director of ESBI, said the company decided to embrace corporate blogging as a way of showcasing its expertise in a more engaging, personal and far-reaching way. We have a huge pool of expertise in ESBI, with people like Colm de Búrca and Neil McDonagh widely regarded as experts in their fields. The blog gives us a new way to connect with our target audiences by allowing us to easily publish and share our views of the industry online – it means we can greatly extend our marketing reach, but at a much lower cost. The other benefit of the blog is it gives a more ‘human’ face to ESBI.,” he concluded.

Sod Turned On Cricket Pitch In Malahide Last Thursday, 28th April, on a beautiful sunny evening at Malahide Cricket Club, the sod was turned on Ireland's first International One Day cricket pitch. Celebrating 150 years in existence, Club Chairman Ian Talbot welcomed all those present to the new home of cricket in Ireland.

By Caroline Heffernan He thanked the County Council for providing a smaller pitch to facilitate club matches while the development works are in progress. Before turning the sod on the new facility, County Mayor, Ken Farrell, congratulated Malahide Cricket Club on their enthusiasm for the project explaining the development of the ground is a three way venture between the Council, Malahide Cricket Club and Cricket Ireland. Chief Executive Officer of Cricket Ireland, Warren Deutrom, praised Malahide Cricket Club for grasping the opportunity to build an International venue for one day cricket matches and wished all those involved the

Sporting Star Hosts Golf Classic Former Sporting Fingal player, Conan Byrne is hosting a fundraiser in aid of his Zambian Mission. A Golf Classic will take place in Swords Open Golf Course on Friday 27th May. Shelbourne player, Byrne is organising his second trip to Zambia, along with pupils from St. Joseph’s School in Rush, in November 2012 to help the Presentation Sisters working with the disabled children of the poverty stricken area of Mongu. With a target of €100,000 set to fund the trip, as well as providing a donation to the aid project, a central aspect to the fundraising drive is the planned Golf Classic. Conan’s charitable project has already received the support of numerous Airtricity League players and it is expected a large representation of players will participate in the May 27 event. A team of four is €200 (€50 per person) and to sponsor a hole is €100. The price includes 18 holes of golf at Swords Open, a goody bag on arrival, food at the 9th hole, finger food in a local bar afterwards and spot prizes throughout the day. All proceeds will go to the Conan Byrne Zambian Mission.

best of luck in seeing it through to completion. He paid tribute to the Irish Cricket team on their recent success and spoke of the growing interest in cricket across Ireland as evidenced by huge attendances at recent Easter camps. Mayor Farrell proceeded to turn the sod, ably assisted by Norman Adams, President of Malahide Cricket Club and Deutrom. There were smiles all round as the three men lifted their shovels in unison. North County hero and crucial member of the Irish Cricket team, John Mooney was also in attendance as was Phil Simmons, the national team coach. In reference to the recent controversy regarding Ireland's possible exclusion from the 2015 Cricket World Cup, Deutrom received a rapturous round of applause when he firmly stated, “it's an event we fully intend to participate in.” The exciting new facility is expected to be ready for the 2012 cricket season.

Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked you for many favours. This time, I ask you for a very special one. Take it Dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your broken heart, where your father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour and not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favour will be granted no matter how impossible. Never known to fail. C.K

public was promised that by the end of March, the order to enable work on Metro North would be signed by Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Leo Varadkar, but it has still not been done, despite the fact that €80 million has been spent so far on the project,’ he said. “During the general election campaign, deputy Reilly made explicit commitments about the future of Metro North. The future of that project, crucial to the entire Dublin and north-east region is now in doubt as a direct result of the new government’s hesitation,” said O’Brien. “The people of the North County and the wider region deserve better. Deputy Reilly should take this opportunity to publicly clarify his position on this project. Are Fine Gael really committed to Metro North? Is this Government committed to building it? If the answer to both those questions is yes, then Minister Leo Varadkar can sign the order for the enabling works without further delay and put hundreds of people in employment,” he concluded.
