Lessons For Council From Beach Fiasco The recent sewage release in Balbriggan, that has caused the closure of the beach there, has posed a number of questions for the local authority to answer. They blamed a combination of equipment failure and heavy rain. For more than 24 hours, the Isaacs Bower pumping station was pumping raw sewage into the sea at Balbriggan. It was only when a canoeist raised the alarm that the local authority became aware of the problem. However, business leaders in the town are very concerned about the affects on tourism in the local area. General manager of the Bracken Court Hotel, Rory Keogh told the County Leader that the hotel received no notification of events from the Council. “The first I heard about it was from a local news agency and then the RTÉ website. We will be posing the question to the Council about why it took 26 hours for it to be noticed. This will have a massive affect on our business, as we rely on visitors from Northern Ireland. Our main selling point is our proximity to a safe beach, where children can play. We are disappointed, as one of the leading tourist businesses in the town, that we have not been informed about how long the beach will be closed. We need to be able to advise our customers of the current and future situations,” he said. President of Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce, Kevin Tolan told the County Leader, “This was an accident ready to happen. With the population increase in the town in recent times, the infrastructure was way behind the population growth. We can only hope that it will now put pressure on the County Council to complete the proposed new pumping station to be located near the church. Tolan was disappointed that the Council did not

By Patrick Finnegan apologise to the people of Balbriggan. “When the levels of water came up, and there was 10 times the amount of ecoli in the sea water compared to neighbouring Skerries, the local authority announced that they had made the correct decision in closing the beach and used political spin to give themselves a pat on the back for making the right decision, instead of offering the people of Balbriggan a fulsome apology.” “I will ask the Council to call a meeting to discuss when the new station will be started and what changes will be enacted to prevent this happening again. With a population of 22,000, this plant should have had a generator, which would have kept it operational in the event of a power failure. They need to review their systems to prevent a reoccurrence,” he said. The County Council’s decision to close the beach for health and safety reasons and their decision to communicate with the public via their website, means that only those members of the public with access to computers or iPhones, who would be of the mindset to check the council’s website on a daily basis, would have been aware of the problem. The other form of communication used, namely by twitter is equally discriminating and is only seen by a minority of people. Many residents regard the Council’s website as difficult to navigate. It appears that the council waited until they were contacted by news agencies before they became proactive. Up to that, the public had to go to the council to find out what was happening. The County Leader enquired from the local authority about how they went about getting the message about this most serious situation across. A spokesperson said that “the council’s website and twitter was the preferred means of communication, along with posting notices at the beach.” Balbriggan residents that the County Leader has contacted maintain that this very selective and limited form of communicating is half hearted and not a genuine effort to alert the public. They say it was negligent and unacceptable. The spokesperson continued, “The primary place to post the problem is at the site itself.” Residents, however went on to say that the notice on the beach could not have been said to be oversized and presumes that everyone entering the beach area sees the notice. Also there are so many

entrances to the beach that it would be impossible to cover all areas. Many children would be allowed to visit the beach area by their parents, if they were unaware of the problem, and children simply ignore warning signs. When the recent major problem arose in Cork, where beaches had to be closed in the interest of public safety, Cork County Council took no chances and wasted no time in immediately informing the national media, including TV and local newspapers. In their efforts to safeguard the health of locals, they used the media with
the maximum impact to communicate their message. They may well have used twitter and the website, but not exclusively. The local community understood the problem instantly and there was no guessing involved. Everything was out in the open. Happily the local authority have confirmed that water quality at Balbriggan beach has returned to within European Bathing Water Quality Limits and a visual inspection of the beach on Friday 31st August, the beach has now reopened to bathers.

Delight At New Swords Sports Facility
Five new football pitches and state of the art dressing rooms have been handed over to the County Council by developer, Brian McKeon from MKN Developments. This incredible facility is located in Ridgewood estate in Swords and will be used by local clubs, St Finian’s GAA Club and River Valley Rangers FC. St Finian’s will have the use of three pitches, one of which is a full size and is ideal for championship hurling and football, while River Valley Rangers have been allocated two full sized pitches. More Than A Snowflake Of Success Snowflakes, the support group for families affected by autism set up in Swords just seven months ago, has come a very long way in a very short time and is now celebrating the successful conclusion of its first ever summer project. It was certainly a busy week for everyone involved and some of the myriad of activities on offer during the summer project were keep-fit classes, environmental art, crafts, a puppet show, group games, a children's disco and all kinds of fun and games. There was also a teddy bear's picnic, a pet show and even the group's own version of the television game show, Play Your Cards Right. Huge credit is due to Snowflakes for organising the week's events. It is a group that is worthy of your support and you will get a chance to do that on Friday, September 7th at 8 p.m. when the group hold a fundraising quiz night at Sportslink. Cost Effective Maintenance Heating our homes is an expensive undertaking and many people, particularly the elderly, are forced to cut back on potentially life saving heat because of high costs. Fortunately here in the North County, we have a range of top class options to choose from, in our efforts to stay warm and healthy. If your house is cold, it is important to carry out some very important steps which will help you to save money and keep warm. Your house may be draughty. If so, then windows and doors should be draught-proofed to allow the minimum ventilation rates to ensure good air quality and to avoid condensation. However, be careful not to over seal the house as this can be unhealthy and unsafe

Cheque Handover To Local Suicide Awareness Group Fingal Bereaved by Suicide saw a big donation received by the team of Easyspeak on Friday last, 31st August at BASE in Brackenstown, Swords. Many young adults came together with the team for the Fingal 10k walk in August. The team raised over €4000 for their charity and big awareness in their town. Easyspeak.ie is a new website created by local man Mark Dolan. After the loss of two friends to suicide earlier this year, Mark felt it was time to create something for the community to prevent this from happening again. Mark hopes Easyspeak will
Autumn Gardens Many people use their gardens as an escape to a quieter world, where they can relax and be alone with their thoughts. This chill out space is of paramount importance to people. It stands to reason therefore to keep it in the best condition possible. The first impression a visitor has when they arrive for a visit is your garden. After a hectic season of growth, now is the time to undertake some tidying and use elbow grease. It is important to look after the small things, like keeping the fringes and

kerbs weed free and sweeping up leaves, which is always a chore in autumn. It is impossible to overstate the importance of a well kept garden to the overall appearance of the house, and, likewise, nothing will detract from the house more than an unkempt garden. For people that have small gardens, keeping them well maintained can be a very rewarding pastime. However, if your garden is too large and out of control, it is wise to employ the services of a reputable garden maintenance company, and you can enjoy hours of 'me time' in your outside space.

Mystery Monster Shocks New York The body of a mystery animal, which was washed up on a New York beach, has sparked a wave of conspiracy theories. Online debates speculate whether the ‘monster’ is a pig, a dog, a giant rat or some kind of mutant. The New York Parks Department insists the animal is a pig bloated by being in the river – but it appears to have toes rather than hooves.

Biggest Ever Enterprise Week Launched Fingal Enterprise Week was launched by County Mayor, Cian O’Callaghan on Friday 31st August last at Roganstown Hotel and Country Club. The clear message coming from enterprise support agencies, business leaders and entrepreneurs at the launch is that “Fingal is open for new business.” The message of encouragement comes as the biggest-ever programme for small businesses was unveiled for October’s Fingal Enterprise Week, which aims to attract up to 2,000 small business owners and managers to fifteen different events across the region.
Running from Monday, October 1st to Friday, October 5th, the initiative is the brainchild of Fingal County Enterprise Board. Oisin Geoghegan, CEO Fingal County Enterprise Board, in an exclusive interview, told the County Leader: “There are two really big events for people setting up in business. One is the Business Start Up Boot Camp, an energetic one day adventure for new and aspiring entrepreneurs, which will take place on 3rd October. The other is the National 50+ Enterprise Day for Senior Entrepreneurs looking to set up in business. Both will be very intensive, but hopefully produc-
tive events,” he said. He went on to say, “There are 15 events, all of which are focused on stimulating enterprise in the area and helping businesses to identify new opportunities. There are plenty of networking events and importantly, we are fortunate to be supported by a wide range of employers, including IBM, Paypal, Keelings, The Gift Voucher Shop, 11890 and Keogh’s Crisps from Oldtown and many other local businesses.” Free one-to-one mentoring and business advice clinics are running every day, in addition to events focused on exporting, workshops to help businesses become more ‘age friendly,’ digital media talks, networking nights and taxation tips seminars. The winner of the annual Fingal Enterprise Awards will also be announced during that week.

More Options Getting a higher education qualification can open up new career options, as well letting you experience new things and meet new people. And it doesn’t have to be about getting a degree. There are lots of different courses, like that mix study with workplace learning. You can learn at University or at your local college, studying full or parttime. There’s a range of grants, loans and bursaries to help you meet the costs. If you get help through a grant or bursary, you don’t have to pay it back.
Improving Your Skill Set If you invest some time in learning, you will be equipping yourself for the future. You’ll have a better chance of getting on at work or finding a new job. There are many different ways to learn, such as Home or Online learning as well as Full and Part time course options. Clarion Provides Healthy Eating Tips
New Season Fashion Trends
According to Head Chef at the Clarion Hotel Dublin Airport, David Steele, smoothies and soups are the way forward. As children go back to school, looking after your families nutrition can be difficult. Certain foods are very important in the school going age group and David recommends that we eat five or more portions of fruit and vegetables a day as part of a balanced diet. He says: “Smoothies and soups are the best way of taking up vital nutrition.” His favourite soup recipe that is always in huge demand at the Clarion Hotel is the Fat Free Vegetable Soup. To make David’s Fat Free Vegetable Soup Recipe, you will need a medium onion, one large carrot, one small parsnip, two

Boots Ireland employees from Millfield Shopping Centre, Balbriggan and Pavilion, Swords held a Boots Night Walk for Night Nurses on 29th August last. The walk was part of their partnership with the Irish Cancer Society, which is the Boots Ireland Charity of the Year. The hardy group of ladies set off from the Pavilions on a walk around Swords. All money raised will be invested in the Irish Cancer Society’s Night Nursing Service, which is available free of charge to cancer patients in their homes. Joanne Kelly, Store Manager, Boots, Millfield told the County Leader. ”Cancer is an issue that affects everyone at some stage of their lives either directly or indirectly. We hope that our partnership with the Irish Cancer Society can help to support people living with cancer in our local communities.” In all, over 850 people took part in Boots Night Walks for Night Nurses in 34 locations around Ireland on the night. It is hoped that the events will raise €50,000 for the nursing service once all the sponsorship is counted. Pictured are Boots staff members, Aoife Lynch, Maeve Kelly, Fran Whelan, Edele Robertson, Sharon Dunne, Ann Lynch, Ann Byrne, Joanne Kelly and Tricia Murtagh as they prepare to undertake a walk on behalf of the Irish Cancer Society,

The trick to dealing with perplexing situations is to act swiftly and decisively, yet to expect little in the way of response. By all indications take careful note of this advice - and act on it - for what takes place this week.

You frequently spoil those you care about and often find it difficult to be tough with them. But as events transpire this week, certain issues simply cannot be ignored. Also, in all matters, the faster you act the better.

Speaking From The Heart
TAURUS Martina Ross has overcome a huge hurdle in her life. The Swords lady has suffered with a stammer for most of her life, that is, until she took the right steps and made her problem into a positive. She sat down to talk with the County Leader, in hopes that her story will inspire others around the North County who deal with a similar condition to come out and speak about it openly. Martina is very bubbly and very talkative when it comes to speaking about the subject. She seems to be natural speaker, saying each sentence fluidly and with ease and points out that initially, because of this, very few believed she had a stammer at all! “I’m what you would call a covert stammerer, which means that I can hide mine very well. It’s only after doing talks and speaking to others that people are actually aware of it.” She has been living in Swords for over 30 years with her husband Dermot and daughter Jennifer and explains that she struggled for years to try and find a successful method to alleviate the issue until she stumbled upon the McGuire programme. Through various techniques of concentration, assertiveness and non-avoidance over a tough, but life changing course, the programme helps tackle the many fears of speaking experienced by people who stammer. She describes her earliest memory of dealing with her own stammer, which still resides in her mind all these years later. “I’ve had a stammer all my life, my earliest memories were from when I was four or five and I could barely say my name in school. Things have got much better now, but back then nobody even spoke about it. I don’t think my family were even aware of how much I was struggling, it just came across as shyness. ” “The thing is, people who stammer desperately want to get the words out, but they just can’t,” she explains. “It’s all about using Covert Diaphragm breathing. Those who stammer struggle to speak because they can’t control their breathing, so the programme is all about using techniques to help get the breathing under control. “ Martina tells me that she most likely would have let her stammer issue lie, but for a move which changed all that. “My husband and I had decided to retire and move to Spain as our daughter had grown up. We enjoyed it for a while and set up our own business there, but I found that I just couldn’t settle in. The language issue was also a big barrier, I had
gone to classes here but just couldn’t speak in them and spoke it less when we were living in Spain. We decided to move back home in 2009. The recession had hit and I knew that if I wanted to get back into work, I’d have to get help speaking properly.” Funnily enough, she came across the McGuire programme on Pop Idol no less! Pop star Gareth Gates, who was a runner up on the show, had spoken openly about overcoming his stammer and mentioned the programme (he still does the work with the programme today), so Martina decided to investigate further. “I had gone to speech therapy previously, and thought that might work for some people, it didn’t work for me. The McGuire programme was such a success for me because you’re with people who are in the exact same situation as you are, so they can really relate to the struggle you’re going through.” Martina now works as a coach for the Programme, which has Dublin Support Group meetings every second week. “It has changed my life completely. I wouldn’t be where I am today without it. Everyone is fantastic and so supportive. You start off with an intense four day course and you have to put in a lot of hard work afterwards to keep it up, but it’s really made an incredible difference to my life.” “I was elated after I completed the course,” she continued. “I just couldn’t believe I had stood up in a room full of people and spoke clearly, after four days! It was one of the great milestones in my life. If you’d asked me to do that before, I wouldn’t have even considered it. I would never have overcome my stammer without the programme and I want to let residents around the locality know that there is a solution and help available out there.” It’s a great achievement to have succeeded in overcoming such a difficulty in her daily life, bit it’s Martina’s positive attitude and outlook on life that really comes through. These days, she is busier then ever. As well as working in Dunnes and attending her support groups, her days are filled with activities such as singing in her local choir (“something I never would have done before”), going on various radio programmes and giving talks so that locals know that they too have other options and needn’t suffer with a stammer unnecessarily. There’s terrific support out there for those that want it,” she concludes. For more information about the programme go to: www.stammering.ie.

EXTEND THE LIFE OF YOUR TYRES Did you know that one of the main reasons for tyre wear is due to wheel misalignment. The most common reasons for this are potholes, bumps in the road, mounting kerbs etc. Having your tyres realigned twice a year by our specialist 3D Laser alignment machine can significantly extend the life of your tyres as well as your car’s shock absorbers, joints and suspension.
We are specialists in 3D WHEEL ALIGNMENT for all makes and models
