he number of patients waiting on trolleys in Beaumont and Our Lady of Lourdes, Drogheda hospitals, which are adjacent to the North County region is causing great concern in the area. The County Leader has been monitoring the number of patients on trolleys in hospitals for some time now. The most alarming fact to emerge is that both Beaumont and Our Lady’s in Drogheda, the two most accessible hospitals to this area, consistently have had the highest number of patients on trolleys for a long time. The reality is that the North County is now, and has been, for some time, the most dangerous place in Ireland to get sick. This is an appalling situation, made even worse by the fact that we have non other than the Minister for Health living amongst us. It seems like only yesterday that that he placed backlogs in the A&E system and the provision of a primary health care facility, and a possible new hospital in the North County, as some of his election promises. Nothing has been done to date and there would appear to be no discernible advantage to the North County from having a Minister for Health in our midst. Election promises are like eaten bread, they are soon forgotten. brought to hospital by ambulance and if they need to be admitted for urgent care they are likely to be placed on a trolley for up to two

Don’t Get Sick In The North County

The frightening scenario is that if one of our loved ones, or our elderly relatives succumb to sudden illness, they will be

Indie Spice - Naas

By Patrick Finnegan days, until a bed is found for them. There is little dignity for a patient sitting in a public corridor whilst weak and sick. During this time, the risk of catching infection is enormous. When hospitals reach 85 per cent capacity, risk management and infection control become severely limited. This figure is well exceeded in both hospitals. That is the reality for people living in the North County area. Such a situation has prompted nurses to take industrial action in Limerick, due to safety implications. We are now coming into the busiest time

of the year in hospitals, a time when epidemics are rampant and severe winter weather becomes a grave and very real threat to our people. The grim reality is that deaths will happen as a result of these chronic backlogs in the hospitals and A&E services. The fact that this is the most populous region in the country, without a hospital of its own, merely deepens the crisis. Indeed many residents of North County Dublin ask the question whether calling an ambulance is the correct course of action to take. They argue that it is worth considering taking the patient by car

as far as Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry, which is less than an hour from most parts of the North County. This appalling scenario may well be the most sensible and safest option to take. When approached by the County Leader, Dr Reilly was quick to revert to his pre election promises. “The issue of overcrowding and long waiting times in A+E will be addressed aggressively. It is a priority for me as minister. It will take time, but already protocols are in place and have been activated to move patients from overcrowded A+E’s into wards in hospitals. The Minister went on to say, “I have stated on a number of occasions that the waiting times for admission for patients attending Emergency Departments in many hospitals are

not acceptable. I am determined to address this situation. In this regard, I established the Special Delivery Unit and assigned to it as a priority the task of addressing the many issues arising in Hospital Emergency Departments.” These are great words, but are are alien to people in the area. Indeed, the people that this reporter has spoken to from the North County see little or no evidence that any action has been taken to address this chronic situation. It is only seven months ago that an unforgiving electorate delivered a fatal blow to the prospects of a government which was deemed to have distanced themselves from the elec-

torate. Unless something is done as a matter of the utmost urgency, a tragedy due to hospital overcrowding is highly likely. This is a situation that nobody wants, but it remains a

real possibility. At this stage, residents of the North County appeal to Dr Reilly to wake up to the reality that faces the area and tackle this problem as it totally gets out of hand.

Istabraq Takes Centre Stage In Terminal 2 Ireland’s much loved Champion Hurdler, Istabraq has taken pride of place at Terminal 2, in Dublin Airport. The iconic representation of Irish thoroughbred, Istabraq by Irish artist Nicola Russell, is currently on display at Terminal 2. The painting took 18 months to complete and the exhibition in T2 gives the general public the chance to see The Big Horse Painting for the first time, as the painting is hanging in a public area prior to the security check that can be accessed by all visitors to the terminal, whether travelling or not. Artist Nicola Russell told the County Leader, “Terminal 2 is itself a work of art and provides a truly stunning backdrop for The Big Horse painting. People are surprised to see a huge painting of a horse as they head off on their business trips and holidays and I’ve already had many positive comments from passengers who have seen the painting.” The Big Horse Painting is hanging on the departures level at Terminal 2 prior to security screening and will be on display until spring 2012. Rush School Celebrates 50 Years St. Joseph’s Secondary in Rush celebrated its Golden Jubilee on Saturday, 24th September last, with a special celebration Mass in St. Maur’s Church in Rush. The Mass was celebrated by the Archbishop of Dublin, Dr. Diarmuid Martin, with students, teachers, families and friends all in attendance. As you might imagine, today’s school is a very different school to the one opened by The

Sisters of Mercy, as an all girls school, 50 years ago. Since the first class began in September 1961, it has grown from a mere 13 pupils to a staggering 588 in today’s school. In 1980, the school became co-educational and in more recent years it has welcomed students from all over the globe. This was all recognised in the opening ceremony, before Mass began, with a Procession of Symbols.

The International Foundation for Adult Education (IFAE-Institute) is a not-for-profit organisation founded in 1985. They are offering a one-year programme in social science, which is tutorassisted, via distance learning. The IFAE programme is vital for anyone in leadership positions working in multicultural settings. The programme will enable individuals or organisations to up-skill and equip themselves with the knowledge to perform effectively in a changing economic world. While it is generally recognised that management personnel benefit from a social science background, it is now obvious that personnel in many key areas need these skills. On completion of the programme, a detailed report can be obtained which provides participants, universities and employers with information on academic performance such as writing skills, research skills, report writing, communication and critical thinking, as well as interpersonal skills such as listening, clear reasoning and problem-solving. As a result of this innovative system, IFAE's reputation is growing worldwide, and organisations are beginning to reap the benefits of employing personnel whose lives are focused on intellectual growth and emotional intelligence. IFAE also provides Grant Assistance and support for unemployed students in the E.U. For more information phone: 0818-365305 or visit www.ifae-institute.org

The third annual get together of old and young took place in Donabate Portrane Educate Together School on Friday, 30th September last. Over 70 grandparents of 5th class children and friends from the local Senior Citizens Club were welcomed to the school to celebrate Positive Age Action Day. A wonderful day was had, songs were sung, people danced and shared a lovely meal together. Some very talented schoolchildren performed songs and Irish dancing to the enthusiastic gathering. It was as entertaining as the X Factor, and no doubt, some of the entertainers will come to the attention of Louis Walsh and Co. in the near future. It was great to see the easy mingling of old and young together on the day.

The Biggest Circulation Of

Boundless Energy In A Great Cause Deborah Leavey is a young vibrant and enthusiastic co-ordinator at Portmarnock Arch Club. The final year DCU nursing student began her work with the Arch Club as a transition year pupil at Caroline Portmarnock Community School. She then built up credits to earn the President’s Gaisce award, presented to young people for personal endeavour in their community. everyone to hang out with their friends.”

“I have to be honest and say I started with Portmarnock Arch Club because my friends were going down but the first person I met was member Gillian Delahunty, an absolute legend. I immediately hit it off with her and have been coming to the centre ever since. Gill has Cerebral Palsy and is confined to a wheelchair. She was very open with me, explaining her condition and helping me understand it wasn’t such a big thing. Our members have different degrees of special needs from Down Syndrome, to Autism and we’re all just mixed in together. I’ve made some of my best friends through the Arch Club, bonding with people who have similar interests and it’s great,” Deborah comments. The club was set up in 1990 by parents of children with Special Needs in the Portmarnock area and they celebrated their 21st anniversary in August this year. Portmarnock Arch Club was initially based in a prefab in St. Helen’s School before the group acquired their own building behind St. Ann’s Church, Portmarnock in 2000. Prosper Fingal, the government agency, who provide educational services for adults with special needs, offered to share the building and pay the bills and this arrangement has proved very successful. The Arch Club run three sessions a week for their members in addition to lots of outings and fun activities. “Thursday night club runs from 8pm to 10pm, Saturday morning club is from 11am to 2pm and Saturday afternoon club is from 2pm until 5pm,” Deborah explains. “Activities are organised for the members, but helpers enjoy them too and the club provides a place for

volunteers and are absolutely brilliant and I think every co-ordinator has been a helper at some point. For outings we aim to have one helper for every member travelling, which protects everyone involved.” Last year, Portmarnock Arch Club members took part in a dance competition for all 50 Arch Clubs across Ireland held in Gorey, Co. Wexford. “We decided to dress the guys up as girls and the girls up as guys for our dances and the members were far better than the helpers who hadn’t practised their routines much at all. Although we were a bit flustered it was a great laugh and all the members got a medal and were thrilled.” The club regularly go away on holiday and have been to France twice. “I was on the first trip to France a few years ago and initially it felt strange to be going abroad without the sense of safety that comes from being in Ireland, but it was absolutely brilliant. Cathy McCarron, one of our co-ordinators who is French, organised the holiday and we stayed on a big campsite in Brittany and it was great craic with members and volunteers in every house,” she says. To raise funds for their various activities and holidays,

As co-ordinator of Saturday afternoons, Deborah will plan out activity programmes for three months ahead. “Sometimes we try and do Arts and Crafts but the members will sneak into the living room and turn on the telly,” she laughs. “For outings we try and limit the number to 24, but visitors from other areas come along every week and it’s hard to leave anyone out. At times, we’ve had 34 members on a public bus which can be stressful but fun,” Deborah comments. Recent excursions have included trips to the cinema and the Science Museum in Trinity College. Michael Dillon, assistant co-ordinator of Saturday afternoon’s programme is really into fitness and he recently organised a sports day on the green behind Ardilaun housing estate. “We had rugby, rounders and football and the members absolutely loved it. We’ve also organised scavenger hunts where we hide clues around the village which the members have to bring back to receive their prize which is generally a Freddo Bar! It’s an easy prize to give, but we always have to have double the amount because members get upset if they Tireless worker for Portmarnock Arch Club, Deborah Leavey. don’t win anything,” Deborah says. Deborah receives an allowance as a co-ordinator for her work “which means I don’t have to find a the Arch Club regularly engage in bag packing in Saturday job to support me at college, I can do what I Dunnes Stores, Portmarnock and also host an annual love and get paid for it. people in the area. This year’s Fashion Show, organised by Orla D’Arcy and Cathy McCarron was held on 23rd September in Portmarnock Hotel and Golf Links and was packed. “Some of the members modelled and had great fun twirling around on the stage while other members were out in the audience cheering them on and it was just brilliant.” When she was younger, Deborah dreamed of becoming a doctor but as a result of her experience with the Arch Club decided to pursue a career in nursing instead. On placement in Beaumont Hospital at the moment as part of her final year studies at DCU, Deborah says “I’m enjoying what I’m learning and I’ve met some incredible people but I’d like to specialise in accident and emergency type nursing which I can’t do in Ireland. I’ve got some experience of thinking on my feet from the Arch Club and I kind of like that but if I move abroad it would be sad as I’d have to leave the club,” she says. While enjoying her nursing course Deborah has also written two novels and her ultimate aim is to be an author. “I wrote a novel when I was in sixth year in school to escape studying more than anything else,” she laughs. “I had a literary agent interested but they wanted so many changes it wasn’t my book anymore and I let it go. I finished another novel a few weeks ago and my literary agent told me to rework the first five chapters and she’ll read it again. I’m very happy with it, I love my story which is a World War II romance and I want to get it published, but really I need to finish my nursing first,” she says. Having returned from her second summer working for a few weeks in an orphanage in Ghana, Deborah has managed to fit a lot in to her relatively short life to date. Dashing off to work on a college assignment before tackling the rewrite of her novel, Deborah is also planning next Saturday’s activities for her Arch Club friends. “It’s brilliant, I love it and can’t imagine not doing it,” she says. Portmarnock Arch Club would be delighted to hear from anyone in the North County Dublin area interested in volunteering a few hours of their time to help run activities in the Arch Club on a Thursday evening or Saturday morning/afternoon and can contact Chairperson Kitty O’Connor at (086) 6048747.

Protest Meeting In Balbriggan ‘Don’t pay the household tax!’ was very much the message addressed to residents at the recent protest meeting in Balbriggan. The meetings, held across the North County, come from the announcement that on January 1st next year, the majority of householders would be levied a new household tax each year. “This is the first step to reintroduce water charges and bring in a property tax. This will affect a lot of people all over the North County,” said local Clare Daly TD. “Householders have a choice. We can decide to stand together and refuse to pay. If people stand together, we can make this charge uncollectable” she added. All residents who attended the meeting were encouraged to spread the word and explain to friends and family why they should not pay the tax. The organisers will soon be upping the campaign and streaming window ads, car stickers and posters all around the North County, encouraging people to show deep opposition to these Wacky World charges.
