Mystery Of ‘Amelia’ The Parrot Solved Swords man, Alexander Fitzsimmons got the shock of his life, when his beloved parrot escaped last week. Bird lover, Alexander, opened the door of his aviary in his back garden, and the parrot, a plumb head parakeet, saw the opportunity to effect a daring escape. Alexander told the County Leader, “I was locking up the aviary last week when she flew out over my head. I was so worried for her because I didn’t think she could survive predators and the frosty nights. She is one of a

By Patrick Finnegan breeding pair and her partner was clearly missing her. She took off into the sky and we thought that was the last we would see of her.” But the parrot had other ideas and had sought refuge at the airport. During a routine patrol, Patrice Dorney of the Dublin Airport airside operations unit was surprised to spot a bright blue and green parrot on the ramp where aircraft embark and

disembark passengers. The bird appeared to be uninjured, but was hungry and dehydrated. The airside staff quickly set about finding out where the lovely creature came from. There were no markings or tags on the bird so, after ringing around several pet stores, they struck gold with Kinsealy Pet Store, where shop staff knew of a parakeet that had gone missing. Shop staff contacted Alexander, who was over the moon to hear his bird had been found. Derek Shortall from airside operations drove the bird to the pet store for the reunion. Alexander said he has decided to call his beloved parrot Amelia, after another pioneering lady who loved the adventure of flight. Thankfully, unlike Amelia Earhart, the parakeet had a safer landing at Dublin Airport and is now happily reunited with her partner safe and sound.

DAA Staff Donate €250K to Barretstown

Dublin Airport Authority staff donated a record €250,000 to its Charity of The Year 2012, Barretstown, the highest

amount raised in a year by DAA since the dedicated charity programme began six years ago. This incredible donation brings the

total money raised by DAA and its employees to €1 million for Irish charities in the last six years. Celebrating the achievement, DAA Chief Executive Kevin Toland told the County Leader that achieving the €1 million raised was a “massive” achievement, particularly if you think of all the diffi-

culties in Ireland over the last number of years.” “To me it’s an example of what the DAA can do when it comes together in one purpose, with everyone working together and pushing in the same direction,” he said. Mr Toland said he looked forward to playing his own part in the 2013

fund raising effort. Accepting the cheque for €250k, Barreststown Chief Executive, Dee Ahern said she was “shell-shocked” at the sum raised. “It’s absolutely unbelievable,” she said. She thanked everybody at the DAA on behalf of the staff at Barretstown, the children

who use the facilities there and their families. “It’s really appreciated.” Over the course of 2012 a record number of events took place with employees, families and friends getting involved to support Barretstown. Events included: the annual 100/50k cycle, 40 DAA ladies participated in the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon, a 5k road race at Dublin Airport, a para-

chute jump, white collar boxing, and book and cake sales. The amount of money raised is greatly helped by the coin donations made by visitors to Dublin Airport. The DAA is now gearing

up for another successful year of fundraising for the 2013 Charities of The Year as selected by DAA employees – Bee for Battens, Make A Wish Foundation, and Down Syndrome Ireland.

Willie Parker, who celebrated his 80th birthday is pictured with his daughters, Siobhan, Doreen, Margaret, Sandra and his wife, Joan.

Willie Parties With The Best Of Them Willie Parker celebrated his 80th birthday in great style in the Carnegie Court Hotel, Swords on Friday, 22nd February last, with over 100 guests attending. Family and friends who travelled near and far to be with Willie on this great occasion were treated to a champagne reception on arrival. Willie, originally from Clonshaugh, settled in Swords when he married his sweetheart, Joan 57 years ago. They met at a dance which was held in Donabate and spent the night dancing together to the sound of “The Del Rio Band”. Back in those days, quick steps was all the rage, how times have changed! They have eight children, three boys and five girls. Over time, this has expanded to 13 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

By Siobhan Taylor Willie was a keen footballer and played for Villa Celtic in Swords for many years. He played left full back and had a reputation of being a solid performer. Whilst working in Dublin Airport, Willie had the opportunity to be photographed with many greats. including Pele, Paul McGrath, Kevin Moran, John Conteh, Fats Domino and Sonny Knowles. Music by DJ, Dave Cleary kept the crowd on the dance floor and everyone had a great night. Willie was very appreciative and touched by everyone who had turned out to see him. When asked the secret of his good health and marriage, he told the County Leader, “keep fit, meet the right woman and take each day as it comes”.

Dream Comes True For Swords Boy Little Conor Murnane from River Valley, recently had his biggest dream come true when he was chosen to be a mascot for the Dublin Football Team. Conor is a football fanatic who, according to his mother Sandra, “eats, sleeps and breathes football.” Conor, who is just seven years old, plays for St. Finian’s in Swords and was the first mascot to be chosen to take part in the opening match of the league and also got to play on the pitch for 20 minutes before the game kicked off. Speaking to the County Leader, Sandra says the whole event meant the world to her son. “We couldn’t believe it, he was over the moon. James Devlin from St. Finian’s organised the whole thing, and we just couldn’t thank him enough as it was a dream come true for Conor. I cried the whole time he was on the pitch, I was so proud.” The family had great reason to be proud of Conor, as he has overcome a great deal in his life for someone who is just seven years old. Conor has been a cardiac patient at

After several months of hard work by a small but dedicated committee, Garristown now has its own Text Alert Scheme. In association with An Garda Siochana, Fingal Leadership Project, Muintir Na Tire, the County Council, local people and businesses, the end product came to fruition just recently, after work had begun before November last year. According to Roger Cronin, Chairman of the Garristown

Text Alert Project, “The project, launched under the auspices of Garristown Community Council has been vigourously supported and, indeed, warmly welcomed by locals. Membership is currently in excess of 180 and as word spreads, new applications are being received daily. The need for neighbours to become one another’s “eyes and ears” has never been more pressing, what with burglaries and

unwanted intrusions a regular feature of rural life.” “Adjoining communities in Naul, Oldtown, Balscadden and Ballyboughal are working on setting up similar schemes, some based on the Garristown model. There is a new sense of vigilance about, a new sense of community spirit and a new awareness that we need not be like sitting ducks.” “So, intending thieves should take note and not consider Garristown as a soft target. With more than 180 new sets of eyes and ears about, they will be spotted, they will be tracked and they will be apprehended,” he concluded.

Jennifer Brady Byrne The lovely Jennifer Brady Byrne from Balrothery is our first contestant from the North County in this year’s Dublin Rose of Tralee. The 22 year old is very excited to be involved in this year’s Rose of Tralee festival and sat down with the County Leader to tell us a little more about herself. Jennifer has an extremely active, busy life. She is currently studying Social Studies and Sciences at Dublin Business School and is also a member of the Garda Reserve. Jennifer says she initially joined the reserve out of curiosity, but now adores it. She says there are both good and bad aspects to the job, but admits that she does get treated differently when she’s in the uniform. “I suppose it comes with the job description, but there’s no doubt that you g e t looked at a

little differently,” she said. “One of the aspects that’s really fantastic, however, is that the younger children look up to you. It’s something we would notice when going around the schools, and it is really wonderful.” Jennifer has lived in Balrothery all her life and attended Milverton National School and then went onto Loreto Balbriggan. Jennifer says that although she wasn’t studious, “I was when I had to be,” she says, laughing, she got the job done, loved the social aspect and was big into playing sports. “I’ve been playing Gaelic since I was four years old and I still play it now, I love it.” She is extremely close to her family; her mother Delores, father Chris and two brothers Daniel and James. Having recently moved out of home for the first time, she now lives in Naul and is still trying to adjust to the change. She is also very active when it comes to volunteering and works with Prosper Fingal (who is her sponsor), and the Remember Us group in Balbriggan. She says that aside from wanting to give back to the community, she has personal reasons for being involved with both groups. “My brother Daniel has special needs and so the main reason for my choosing my college course and volunteering with Prosper Fingal and Remember Us, is to help him in whatever way I can. The groups do such a fantastic job and I love working with them.” Jennifer also has quite a ear for music. She plays the button accordion and will be demonstrating her talents on the night, should she be selected. Jennifer says that she has always wanted to enter the Rose of Tralee competition, having always watched it as a child. “I always knew I wanted to take part and I wanted to do it for my mother as well. I was a real tomboy growing up, so I think my mother thought she’d never see the day when I entered! I would just love to make my family proud.” She finished off by saying that her motto in life has always been “if you don’t laugh, you’ll cry.’ “I’ve always tried to see the brighter side of things and I think the motto really sums it up,” she concluded.

Loss Of Mobility Allowance Hits Home By Patrick Finnegan Last week’s controversial decision by the Government to cut the mobility allowance for severely disabled people, is set to have a profound effect on one particular North County resident. Portmarnock woman, Michelle Gaynor, who suffers from severe Cerebral Palsy, is utterly

reliant on her car, which has been adapted specially for her requirements. Speaking to the County Leader, she said that this decision has robbed her of her independence. “I use my car for absolutely everything and it acts as my arms and legs and without it, I can do nothing. When you have your car adapted, you get €104 per month, which will be taken away from me in four months time. You have to be at the most severe end of disability to qualify for mobility allowance in the first case. Without this allowance, there’s no way I can afford to keep my car. Even the review group that has been set up does not have anyone with a disability on board,” she said. The fact that this money will be ring fenced for disability issues is of no consolation to Michelle. “While organisations like Vantastic, who do a great job in transporting people with disabilities will benefit, it’s no good to me. They will not be available to bring me to a restaurant or to socialise with my friends. They cannot attend to me on an individual basis. Michelle’s anger with the decision was clear when she said, “It’s like the Government don’t give a damn. They don’t care about the young and they didn’t have any consultation process about it. I’ve had this allowance since I was 16 years old and I found out through a friend of mine. Enda Kenny promised before the last election that he would protect the most vulnerable, but he’s now ensured that I, and others like me are isolated. Michelle lives beside the train station in Portmarnock, but this offers little comfort to her. Anytime I use the train, the station must be manned, as ramps must be put in place for my wheelchair. If nobody is there, I cannot get on the train. “Things like this make me feel like an inconvenience and is all the more reason that this cut must be reversed,” concluded an angry Michelle.

College Sports Hall A Boost For Balbriggan Local deputy, Brendan Ryan (Lab), has welcomed the news that the County Dublin VEC has agreed to co-fund the provision of an enhanced Sports Hall at Balbriggan Community College. Ryan told the County Leader, “I first contacted the Minister for Education and Skills. Ruairi Quinn back in September 2012 seeking his intervention to allow cofunding for this much needed facility to go ahead. The project required an extra €300,000 in order to deliver this much needed sports hall

to Balbriggan. The release of the funding was mired in Departmental red tape.” He continued, “On behalf of the school and the Balbriggan Community, I am delighted to have been informed by the Minister for Education today that the

release of the required funds was granted. The facility will benefit the pupils of Balbriggan Community College during the day and the wider Balbriggan Community in the evening. Balbriggan has grown at a great rate in the last decade and needs improved community facilities. It was vital that the Department of Education released this funding for the town of Balbriggan,” he concluded.

Ballyboughal Pitch And Putt Last week’s pairs scramble winners were Ronnie Delaney and Mary Kennedy, with a net 45. They won on back nine from runners-up, Steven Rowe and Irene Parkinson, also with a net 45. Congratulations to Irene Parkinson, with the first hole in one of 2013 on the 4th. She sat down with the County Leader to tell us more about her connection with Balbriggan and why she loves working with young people so much. It’s clear upon meeting Sharon that she is passionate about what she does. She is fully at ease and can talk in great length about something she obviously loves to be involved in. “I’ve always loved the nature of working with young people,” she said. “Everyone is so different and you have the opportunity to work with such a unique and diverse group of young people, it’s really fantastic. No one day is ever the same in youth work and that’s an aspect of it that I really love as well.” The Balbriggan Youth Service is made up of Sharon, her colleagues Derval, Gary, Zita and 28 volunteers who each selflessly give up a few hours a week to work with the youth group. Sharon lights up when I ask about the volunteers. “We wouldn’t be able to do anything without our volunteers, they are absolutely fantastic. She says one of the things that’s so wonderful about their volunteers is the enthusiasm they bring to all the different projects: “The excitement and enthusiasm they have for everything we do is just amazing,” Sharon continues. “Their attitudes really rub off on everyone else, and it is a two-way thing. The volunteers get so much out of working with the group as well.” She says the volunteers are a core element of what the youth service is all about, so they are always looking to keep that element very strong and take on as many more as possible. “I think it’s very important for communities to get involved in their own development, and volunteering is a brilliant way to do this. You don’t need to have any particular skill, just lots of enthusiasm and commitment to working with the young people.” The youth service are an extremely active and busy group, and they always have activities planned in advance. They run a variety of different programmes all catered for the different age groups of 10 to 18 year olds (which all commence after school hours), so

there is something for everyone. She says that though the group is made up of set programmes, it is very important they they remain flexible and open to adapting to the young people’s needs at any given time. “As we work with people from such a young age into the early stages of their adulthood, we’re there at all the important milestones in a person’s life, something we’re very much aware of. We know how everyone can go through struggles at that period in their lives and we want to be here for them in whatever way we can.” ‘I’ve always felt that Balbriggan has had a fantastic element of community about it,” she continued. “What myself, and everyone involved wants to do is really keep that alive and especially highlight the amount of fantastic work that the young people do for their communities, as they do fantastic things. We want them to get the acknowledgement that they deserve.” Sharon says that she has seen a huge growth in the need for youth facilities not just in Balbriggan, but in other towns across the North County. “Even from when I started right up until now, we’ve seen a massive growth in the need for more facilities. Balbriggan has a very large population of young people and as it is, there are very few facilities for them around the area and in towns such as Skerries and Rush.” She says every community must have an outlet for their young people: “They absolutely need an outlet for themselves. We get a lot of calls from Skerries and Rush wanting us to come out and give talks and so on, and we just haven’t got the facilities to accommodate this as we would like to. We would really love to expand to help address this issue.” Though it’s very clear that Sharon loves what she does, she still tries to make time for other hobbies and interests too. She is currently hard at work studying, a process that she says is “challenging but very rewarding.” She is a very family orientated person and loves to spend time travelling with her husband (they recently went to Egypt, a trip which she says was incredible) and quality time with her many nieces and nephews. She would love to do more travelling in the future and would love to see the youth service continue to go from strength to strength. “We just want to be here to support and aid our young people,” Sharon concluded.

“We wouldn’t be able to do anything without our volunteers, they are absolutely fantastic.”

Hundreds of the North County’s enterprising teenagers will be taking centre stage at the 12th Annual Student Enterprise Awards County final on Tuesday, March 12th. Organised by the Fingal County Enterprise Board, over 300 students representing fifty-five different student enterprises, will be competing for a share of the €10,000 prize fund at the annual county final. According to the Chairman of Fingal County Enterprise Board, Joe Harford, eighteen secondary schools and six primary schools will be competing this

opportunity to research and set-up their own businesses.” The Deputy Mayor, Cllr. Peggy Hamill, is presenting the senior category prizes this year, which includes an educational trip to Barcelona for the winning students and their teacher. The secondary school

winners across the Junior, Intermediate and Senior categories will be invited to represent Fingal at the National Student Enterprise Awards in Croke Park on April 17th. At last year’s National Finals, Fingal was represented by Donabate Community College and Skerries Community School.

Outrage Over Plans To Demolish Buildings A large crowd of angry Balbriggan residents turned up at the local beach last Sunday, to protest at the County Council’s plans to demolish two landmark building there. The people of Balbriggan were stunned this week when they learned of the Council’s plans to demolish the two, well known buildings, which

formerly served as bathing shelters for decades. One is now a lifguard hut and the the other is used as a seasonal shop for people enjoying the facilities on the beach. Local councillor, Gráinne Maguire (NP), and PRO of Balbriggan Tidy Towns, Zoe Nelson, both contacted the County Leader to express their anger at the plans to demolish the buildings, which they say are “an integral part of the beach vista.” “These shelters represent unique architecture from the early part of the 20th century and they should be protected, rather than targeted for destruction,” said Cllr Maguire. “They are part of our town’s history and have been there longer than I can imagine. We can’t just stand by and let the Council knock them down.” Zoe Nelson expressed equal concern: “The Council have a history of destroying unique buildings on the Balbriggan coast,” she said. “In the 1990’s, they half heart-

edly demolished the Bath House and Diving boards leaving them in a disgraceful and dangerous shameful state. This time they are quoting Health and Safety issues but the residents of Balbriggan are not convinced. We suspect the issue is maintenance costs and rather than consult the community to come up with creative option, they have gone straight to a demolition scenario, it’s disgraceful.” Maguire has asked the County Council to provide a comprehensive report to the Town Council at the next scheduled meeting. “It is imperative that the Council provide accurate details of their plans and enter into a consultation with the community on such a serious change to the beach environment,” she added. “We love our beach shelters and will not allow the over zealous County Council to destroy our heritage and desecrate our beloved town amenity,” concluded Nelson.

Official Opening Of Holywell Community Centre The official opening of Holywell Community Centre took place on Monday, 25th February at 2.30pm in Swords. The County Mayor, Councillor Cian O’ Callaghan attended to mark the opening. Like the Applewood Community Centre and the recently constructed Flemington Community Centre in Balbriggan, the Holywell Community Centre is a state of the art ‘shared facility’ that is built alongside a national school, the newly built Holywell Educate Together N.S. The shared facility is the fruit of a partnership between the Department of Education and Skills and the County Council known as the ‘Fingal Schools Model’, which provides for enhanced sporting and recreational facilities across the North County and beyond. Balbriggan Students Return To St. Wendel Students of Balbriggan Community College recently made a return visit to St. Wendel, Germany on a school exchange visit. Fourteen students accompanied by two teachers headed away recently for a four day visit to stay with host families and attend school during their stay. Leas Cathaoirleach of Balbriggan Town Council, Peadar O’Kelly called into Balbriggan Community College on Thursday, 28th February last to wish the students well on their journey. Balbriggan Town Council signed a partnership arrangement with the town of St. Wendel, Saarland in 2008, which has resulted in various exchanges between

both towns. He told the County Leader: “The school exchange is a key part of the Town Council’s vision for the partnership and we are delighted to be able to support these exchanges which will forge stronger links between both towns. This will be the second visit to St. Wendel by students from Balbriggan Community College. Captain’s Drive-In At Swords Open It was a decidedly cold February morning for the annual Captains’ Drive-In at Swords Open Golf Club, which is the club’s first major golfing event of the calendar year. There was even some snow, but the weather didn’t deter the members who turned up to support their new captains, Tommy O’Rourke and Eileen Foran. Members were treated to a glass of champagne on arrival, before a lone piper, Christy Russell Jnr. played the captains onto the tee box to take their all-important tee shot. Captains, Tommy O’Rourke and Eileen Foran took their shots well to the delight of the crowd. They were playing a “shotgun start where all groups of players tee off simultaneously from different holes. This proved to be a great success as the weather held off for them. Later that evening, they celebrated the day’s golfing with a prize giving, dinner and entertainment in Roganstown Golf and Country Club Hotel. Vice Lady Captain, Michelle O’Shea told the County Leader: “Swords Open Golf Club is renowned for being one of the friendliest clubs in the area. We also have a big, if not the biggest ladies membership in north county Dublin.

Everyone knows that Spring is the time of bright colours and smiles. It’s a time for positive changes. The daytime hours become longer, and we can now stay out and enjoy more time in the great outdoors and love the thoughts of coming home to our beautiful homes. However, people tend to spend more time inside their home than out, so why not make your home as bright and relaxing as possible.

Make A Good Plan Making a plan at the start of Spring is a wise move. Start by writing all the things you would like to do in the home and then prioritise them. If this means starting with the cheapest improvements, then that is the way to go. A fresh look to your windows can be created by adding new blinds or having your current ones reversed. The window is one of the main focusses in a room and by having it looking good, it can give a different look and feel to any room. Flooring can be ready to change this time of the year after the bad weather we have had. Replacing floors is a job that can really give a great new look to a room or hallway. Carpets are so luxurious and are available in all price ranges and give a stylish, comforting and warm look.

Paint the kitchen walls in a bright creamy colour that wouldn’t be too annoying, but would be pleasing to your eyes. Also, why not take those dark blinds down and keep the windows open, or even try some new wooden blinds that come in many different colours. A Traditional Weekend In Skerries The countdown is underway to the annual Skerries Traditional Weekend, which will once again feature a fantastic celebration of all things Irish. Now in its 11th year, this year’s event runs in May for three days and over the course of the three days there will be lots of music, song and dance reflecting the unique culture of the North County. Leading artists travel to Skerries, where they join with locals and visitors in a cele-

bration of Irish heritage in what is always a fantastic event. Last week the annual table quiz, an important fundraiser for the organisers, was held in Keane’s Bus Bar and as usual, it was very well supported. This year the weekend kicks off with the Schools

Outreach Programme when local musicians visit primary schools in the area, providing an interactive workshop and demonstration of various traditional Irish instruments. The finishing touches are currently being put to this year’s schedule and will be announced in the coming weeks.
