Council Scores An Own Goal! T
he horrendous decision of the local authority to grant contracts to Sporting Fingal players a week before the club folded, is seen as a particularly damaging one for the players’ career prospects. It is widely believed that the local authority would have had full knowledge about the precarious financial position of the club, following the departure of its main shareholder. This action has limited the choice of the players in securing new contracts with other clubs. There are young families which are being affected, thus causing great hardship in these times of austerity. One wonders why contracts were issued in the full knowledge that the club was doomed and what the full cost of this debacle will be. The players are now seeking financial compensation.
Local TD, Clare Daly (SP), and new councillor, Eugene Coppinger (SP) slammed the local authority and have asked the management to issue a comprehensive statement regarding the outstanding financial claims owed to Sporting Fingal players. They want them to address any liability that the local authority has regarding same. Coppinger, who has tabled a motion on the
By Leslie Murphy matter told the County Leader, “It is an absolute disgrace that any group of workers are left to chase their employer to achieve their entitlements. These footballers have families and financial commitments. It is particularly reprehensible that some of the players contracts were signed a week before the club folded. This resulted in players losing their opportunity
to sign for other clubs. Many are now without a job in a profession that has a very limited duration. We support the call of Sporting Fingal players, which is being supported by the players union, for justice.” Daly told the County Leader, “On numerous occasions, I have had heated debates over the funding of the club. I tabled questions and motions regarding costs incurred by the authority in the

local authority and the ratepayer, despite the authority’s shareholding of over 20 per cent.” Continued on page 8

The entire country and the North County in particular was shocked to hear about the tragic loss of two local fishermen at the weekend. This has caused widespread sadness in the communities of Skerries, Rush and Balbriggan. We are making an appeal to the residents of North County Dublin to assist local fishermen in their valiant efforts to find the two men. Unfortunately, the cost of fuel has spiralled in recent months, with the result that fishermen, anxious to be part of the search, are being placed in a financial predicament. It costs around €20 per hour in fuel to operate a trawler and in times of high fuel costs, it places extra hardship on willing fishermen. As the search area covers a vast distance, the costs incurred are likely to be very high for already hard pressed people who are self employed in an industry that is no longer as lucrative as it once was.
Many readers will have watched the appeal for help from one local fisherman on the 9 o’clock news on RTE on Sunday night last. Our appeal is to the generous people of the North County to rally to support the local fishermen in their efforts to find their colleagues. We are seeking donations for this very worthy cause in the hope that the bodies can be returned to their families. If you want to make a contribution, please fill in the coupon below and drop it in to your local Bank Of Ireland.

Rush Youngster An Inspiration To Us All Young Nathan Broderick is an example to us all. Nathan, aged 11 from Rush was so upset at the closure of the Fry Model Railway in Malahide Castle, that he decided to take matters into his own hands. Nathan, a student at Rush National School decided to contact Councillor Ciaran Byrne, asking him to explain why the model railway was being removed. Byrne suggested that he write a letter to the County Mayor, Ken Farrell and he was assured that the

Mayor would respond. Nathan, whose family is steeped in the history of trains, his father and grandfather having worked on the railways, then decided to draw up a petition, seeking a reversal of the council’s decision. He lobbied his friends and school pals and received a hugely impressive 300 signatures from both Rush and Skerries, adults and children alike. His proud mother, Lorna told the County Leader, “It’s amazing the amount of people who are upset at the closure of this railway. It has had a huge impact on people all over the
By Patrick Finnegan North County. Everyone is talking about it - it even was mentioned on Joe Duffy’s programme,” said Lorna. People are upset that the entire building is being removed, including the Craft shop behind it. “All people are looking for is that the facility be located in the North County, where it can be visited. It’s only open in summer and should not cost much. It is a great draw for tourism,” said Lorna. The petition was handed to Mayor Farrell by Nathan in the company of
friends and family at County Hall in Swords. The mayor was clearly impressed by the endeavours of this civic minded youngster and told the County Leader, “The petition is now in the hands of the County Manager and I have instructed him to hand it over to Dublin Tourism, who own the project. I have assurances that this will be done,” he said. Hopefully the inspiration that Nathan has shown can be an example to us all and will be replicated in all areas of society. If so, then we can have genuine hope for the future.

Two Gold Medals For Donabate’s Iron Man Dinny Collins, from Donabate, has won two gold medals in Ireland’s first Kettlebell competition in Kilkenny last week writes Leslie Murphy. A kettlebell is like a bowling ball with a handle attached. They come in various weights and have been around since the 17th century. Kettlebell training is becoming increasingly popular due to its effectiveness in fitness training. Twenty minutes is the equivalent to spending 1 hour at the gym. The competition attracted competitors from Ireland, England, Finland, Sweden, Portugal, Spain, Ukraine, Latvia, Croatia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Australia. Dinny told the County Leader, “The first event was the Clean and Jerk and I completed 111 overhead lifts with 24 kgs in ten minutes. The second event was the Snatch Sprint in which I completed 77 single arm overhead lifts with 16kg in three minutes. Not bad for a 64kg guy,” said a proud Dinny. Dinny is no stranger to competition, as he is a competitive triathlete, taking part in gruelling Ironman races and this year he qualified for the Irish Age group team. He is taking part in the European Duathlon (run/cycle/run) Championships this April. We Dinny Collins wish him the best of luck.

The Biggest Circulation Of
Malahide Green Village Launched The Malahide Green Village was launched in The Grand Hotel on Wednesday 23rd March last. It is a not for profit organisation, made up of local volunteers which aims to improve energy efficiencies and create a greater lifestyle awareness that will benefit the residents of Malahide, the many local businesses, children and visitors alike. Team member, Colm Fitzpatrick, spoke at the launch about progress made in terms of providing advice on retrofitting homes, looking at potential sites for local allotments, while also exploring a bicycle and paint recycling scheme.
By Caroline Heffernan The local authority have been supportive of the group’s endeavours from the beginning and are liaising with them in their quest to identify a suitable site for the provision of allotments. Members of Sustainable Skerries, who have recently established a two hundred and fifty bed allotment in their area, attended the event and shared their experiences with the audience. Other projects undertaken by the Green Village team include an ‘Hours Bank’ where local people provide an hour or two of their time to

share their expertise to help others. This idea is proving to be very popular and at the close of the meeting, many people registered their commitment to share their skills and donate their time over the coming months. The desire for the team to provide mentoring to local businesses and individuals was evident. A fantastic video was commissioned by the Green Village and produced by Michael Morangos, Donal Magner and their friends, local sixth year students from Belvedere College and Malahide Community School. The video depicted a day in the life of a secondary school student as he thought about the environmental impact of his actions and the result was hilarious. Over the coming months, the Green Village team will offer awareness sessions for community groups and will hold public workshops in specific areas of interest.
Achievement Certificates For Swords School By Patrick Finnegan

Talent Abounds At Ardgillan Community College By Sinead Walsh The students at Ardgillan Community College in Balbriggan held a very successful Talent Show to help raise money for the Arts Department in their school. The event was organised by the students and teacher, Catherine Mulhern. The talent on show was on of a very high standard, and one that the students and teachers should be proud of. There was a huge range of acts on show, all of whom did themselves proud. The show was hosted by the excellent Sean McLoughlin and Daniel McDonnell, both students. Chelsea Doyle opened the show with a strong performance of “Listen”, by Beyoncé. She set the bar high, but her schoolmates all rose to the challenge. Singers, dancers,

composers and the school choir gave the audience some top class value for money, and proved that the school’s arts department is definitely one worth investing in. Trés Unique rounded off the night with a rendition of “Fame”, which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone in the audience. Deputy Principal, Hazel Hannon spoke of the excitement and enthusiasm generated by the show. “The students have been organising this over the past number of months, and this week they have just been so excited about it. We have sold over 200 tickets, which goes to show the level of support and the great response we’ve been getting from the community.” The evening can only be described as a huge success. For this reporter, it proved that the wealth of talent in the North County is the strongest it’s ever been. Every single act had the audience enthralled. Everyone involved should give themselves a pat on the back for a job well done.

They were shown how a bank works as part of their project called, ‘How Does A Community Work’. Meriel Deane from AIB said that the children were shown different aspects of banking and were brought to various departments of the bank. They all showed a great interest in the workings of the bank and were treated to some nice biscuits and cakes afterwards. Junior Achievement Ireland offers structured enterprise programmes for children and brings business volunteers into the classroom to teach enterprise skills to young people. They are a charitable organisation relying mainly on the corporate sector to provide funding to run the organisation. They provide feedback to both the schools involved and supporting companies. To this end, staff sometimes visit schools. Junior Achievement brings high quality materials into the classroom, thus allowing schools to have contact with local companies. One of the main advantages are that students are exposed to a wide variety of professions, which is hoped will encourage them to complete their schooling.

History To The Fore In Skerries On Saturday next 9th April, Skerries will come alive in a historical way as the town celebrates the centenary of the iconic 1911 census. The official opening will take place at 11.00 am at Skerries Mills, with period music and poetry recitals. Catriona Crowe will formally launch the 1911 weekend. She has managed the ‘1911 census online’ project which has been a phenomenal success. At 12 noon, there will be guided historical walk with an archaeological focus, starting at Skerries Mills via Strand Street and Church Street conducted by Brendan

The meeting place for this walk is on North Beach (near the cormorant sculpture), with Niall Roycroft of the Skerries Historical Society at the helm. Then at 4.00pm, there will be a guided walk featuring the history of the graveyard and grave stones, the development of the road network, the haven and mill stream. Meeting place will be at the entrance to Holmpatrick graveyard. Self-Guided tours around the town centre, with map guides are available in shops. Malahide’s Ace Of Games Hugh O’Loughlin has been the face of the Golf and Tennis Centre in the grounds of Malahide Castle Demesne for the past twenty years. “the local authority provide the facility and contracted me to run it for them. We’re open to the public every day of the year,” he comments as we watch the early morning fog gradually lift from the tennis courts where a group of young adults are attempting to play. Now living in Donabate with his wife, Orla and three children, Hugh grew up across the road from Malahide Castle in Castleview Park. “It’s an interesting twist of fate that I ended up working across the road from where I grew up.” Steeped in tennis, and a talented junior player, Hugh remembers arriving to live in Malahide in 1969. His dad, Tom piled his four sons into the family car to explore what this country town had to offer. An avid sports fan and former Garryowen rugby player, Tom landed at the Grove Lawn Tennis Club which only had 11 members at the time and was going downhill rapidly. He signed up his family there and then, bringing the membership tally to 17 and the rest is history. The erstwhile Tom was instrumental in establishing the Dublin Parks Tennis in 1977, an idea inspired by Tom Shelly, a former Irish Junior Tennis Champion. Shelly had seen a programme operating in New York where public parks provided tennis courts and a tennis league. “I was 14 when my dad got involved in establishing the Parks Tennis and my brothers and I were just told we were to help out,” laughs Hugh. “It was great fun though. I remember at 15 being presented with 20 kids to teach tennis to up in Elmfield in Whitehall. The Parks Tennis was never about “good players,” it was about giving people the opportunity to try tennis. When I go down to Malahide Tennis Club now, I would recognise a quarter of the players who started

Heffernan here in the Castle and moved on to the Club. Colm O’Brien, the Davis Cup player started here,” Hugh says proudly. The fact that the Parks Tennis is thriving 30 years later is testament to its success. In 1990 it joined forces with Tennis Ireland and has grown from an initial base of 700 children in 1977, to 26,000 spread across Ireland in 160 venues. Hugh is now a Tennis Ireland tutor, training young people to become tennis coaches. This programme is part of a FETAC level five local training initiative run by Fás. Hugh also teaches the participants communication skills. Having battled dyslexia in secondary school, Hugh successfully completed an Arts Degree in 1989. He travelled to UCD five nights a week in first year and four nights a week thereafter to study History and Politics. “With my dyslexia I figured out over time how to write simply and concisely, identifying the key points. I use this technique when teaching the young tennis coaches communication skills. A clear message well delivered is vital.” Being in Hugh’s presence is calming. He has a stoicism common to people who value what’s truly important in life. Hugh’s 10 year old son, Christopher is autistic. Hugh describes parenting an autistic child as ‘a whole new world.’ He speaks modestly about organising a ‘Tennis Day for

Autism’ last August. He called on the support of friends to organise the event which comprised a tennis competition between Malahide Tennis Club and the Parks Tennis League. This was followed in the evening time by a barbeque and disco. Hugh managed to raise €8,500 which covered swimming lessons for an entire year for the pupils of Our Lady of Consolation’s Autistic Unit in Donnycarney. Christopher has attended the school from three years of age and Hugh believes ‘they were lucky to get him in as he has come a long way since.’ The tennis courts aren’t the only facility run by Hugh. There is also a pitch and putt and par three golf course on site. Many local clubs have used these facilities from the start and the good humoured banter of Duffy’s Ladies Pitch and Putt Club are a familiar sound on Saturday mornings. “They’re very loyal,” remarks Hugh. “They’ve been here since the facility opened in 1984 as have the Malahide Ladies Pitch and Putt Club who play every Saturday afternoon. A lot of my regular golfers come from Artane and Darndale. During the summer we have a lot of foreign visitors, especially from France and Spain. They can’t believe facilities like this exist where you can just walk in the door and pay €8 for a round of golf including hire of clubs.’ Hugh is excited about the local authority’s Heritage Plan to improve facilities in all the local parks. “One of the ideas behind the heritage initiative is improved signage. It wouldn’t cost an awful lot of money but it would let visitors to the Malahide Castle and the village know we are just a few minutes walk away.’ The redevelopment of the nearby Malahide Cricket Club as an International standard cricket ground with the capacity for 12,000 spectators is another positive move which should benefit the golf and tennis centre with increased visibility and hopefully the provision of some parking facilities. Celebrating 20 years as the welcoming face of Malahide Castle’s Golf and Tennis Centre, Hugh’s enthusiasm for his role shows no signs of abating. “I’m optimistic about this place. It’s here a quarter of a century, has introduced many people to golf and tennis and we feel with the County Council Heritage Plan in train, we can build up our numbers and enable more people play sport and enjoy our amazing setting.” Hugh would like to invite all North County Leader readers together with their families and friends to an Open Day in the Golf and Tennis Centre on Sunday, 10th April from 1pm to 4pm where they will learn more about what the facility has to offer.

The Balbriggan Community Policing Forum is an independent body which aims to build community capacity, develop links and further enhance communication between the residents of Balbriggan, state agencies, local authority and An Garda Siochana. One of the most important elements of their work is the facilitation of public meetings. It was set up solely to look at solving issues arising around drug and alcohol related anti social behaviour and community safety. The success of these meetings will depend on community involvement. Antisocial behaviour is something that affects everyone. Each contribution is important and all views will be welcome.

Paula Clare - Lusk
Nicola Nolan - Malahide
Twenty three year old Paula Clare from Lusk lives at home with her mother, Bride and father, Seán. She is the youngest of six children and has three sisters, Fiona, Deirdre, Nuala and two brothers, John and Brendan, who between them share 15 children. Paula attended St McCullins National School in Lusk, where she was a keen GAA player. She then attended St Joseph’s Secondary School in Rush where she was a prefect and a monitor. She then went on to receive a qualification with FÁS, in business for FTI, (Fast Track to Information). During her time in school and college, Paula worked part time in Dunnes Stores, Balbriggan. She has been working at Xtreme 45, in Donabate for the past five years. She has been constantly updated with various courses on safety, from the importance of helmets to safety and protective clothing. She also works at Mondello at the weekends as a ‘Grid Girl’. Paula has a great love of motorbike racing and has been to race meetings all over Ireland and the Isle Of Man with her boyfriend Andy who is also a road racer and Mechanic. Paula helps out locally in her community along with her dad Seán in the local parish, where she does all sorts of work from secretarial to church collections and her local supermarket, SuperValu are her sponsors. Paula told the County Leader, “ I will be running the Mini Marathon this year for a charity that’s very close to my heart and that is, MCUI Medical Team, they are a voluntary organisation of doctors and paramedics who give their time free to the road races. I have lost some close friends to the sport and this is important to me. Being the youngest of four girls we always watched the Rose Of Tralee and have followed it in the County Leader. I always wanted to enter and when my mam suggested it to me this year, I decided to go for it. I am really looking forward to being more involved with the Rose team”. Paula’s motto in life is, live every day like it’s the last day and make the best of it and as the saying goes, ‘Carpe Diem’.
Twenty one year old, Nicole Nolan from Malahide, is our next lovely girl to enter into the Dublin Rose of Tralee. Nicole is the second eldest of four children. She attended primary school in Kinsealy and Bettystown when her family moved there. She went on to attended Loreto Secondary School in Balbriggan and during this time, her family moved back to Malahide. However, she stayed in secondary school in Balbriggan as she was very happy there. Nicole jokes about how many times her family have moved and are now settled in Malahide. Her eldest brother, Andrew fell in love when they moved to Bettystown and himself and his partner, Rachel have a six month old daughter, Sophie, with whom the whole family are delighted and dote on. Nicole is currently in her final year at DCU where she is studying Commerce and is specialising in Marketing. Nicole’s parents, Ken and Elaine are a great support to her and Nicole wants to follow in her dad’s footsteps and eventually open up her own business. Her dad is the proprietor of Gallant Security Systems and is her proud sponsor for the competition. Nicole is a keen gaelgóir and attended the Gaeltacht four times while she was in secondary school. She works in IKEA when she’s not in college and is head of the charity committee. She has organised many events to raise money to help less fortunate people, and last Easter, was dressed up as an Easter Bunny in order to raise funds for Temple Street Children’s Hospital. Being on the go is second nature to Nicole who tries to fit everything into her busy lifesyle. She has a boyfriend, Anthony and the couple have been together for three years. They also own a beautiful husky called Rex. Nicole’s sister, Erica is like a best friend to her and she is currently studying at Scoile Iosa, in Malahide for her Leaving Cert. Her little sister, Ruth is 10 and is a very special girl to all who know her. Ruth is so important to her family and was born with Cystic Fibrosis. Her mum, Elaine is doing a great job as her carer and is very lucky to have such a supportive family. Nicole told the County Leader, “Ruth is such a loveable girl, everybody who knows her just loves her. My mum is brilliant and keeps her busy with lots of activities. She never stops and they are always on the go even at the weekend. Ruth is about to have a changing experience and is to be granted a wish by ‘Make A Wish’ Foundation. Her wish is to become a pop star for the day. The whole family are so excited by this. She has a heart of gold and when it was her birthday, she asked everybody to donate to Trócaire rather than give her a present”. “I have been a fan of the Festival for years and was approached by a guy while out shopping and asked to enter and I suppose it was a blessing in disguise because I would never have had the confidence to enter otherwise. It’s also a great way for me to make new friends and to bring more awareness to the charities I’m involved with and to get involved with the charities the festival supports. I’m really happy to be a part of this great experience and can’t wait to get more involved as the time goes by”. Nicole’s motto in life is “embrace the good days and remember the bad days are temporary”.
Be A Male Escort To A Beautiful Rose If you are unattached (but not afraid of commitment), a complete gentleman (but with a wicked sense of humour), well mannered (but with a touch of the devil) but above all, know how to treat a lady, or you know someone who would be perfect for the job, then this is the job for you! Colm Croffy, Rose of Tralee, Escort Co-ordinator, who was a Rose Escort himself once upon a time, told the County Leader, “The Rose of Tralee Escorts are the 32 most envied men in Ireland every August. Ireland’s most eligible single men between 21 and 30 years of age could enjoy a chance to become their county’s Rose Escort and secure a place at the now famous Escorts Boot Camp Weekend. Once they have shown their mettle and proved their worth and stamina, the ultimate reward will be a week of fun in Tralee with the most charming and accomplished young women in Ireland the 32 International Rose of Tralee contestants.” The reigning Escort of the Year representing the County Derry Rose Centre, Robbie Costelloe, has described his two years as a Rose Escort as being the highlight of his life to date. Robbie told the County Leader “The friends I’ve made are for life, the memories will never dim and the laughs along the way are the loudest we will ever have. I should know, I enjoyed it so much I did it for two years and it only costs €100 for a guy to enter”. And as if escorting the Roses
isn’t enough, of the 32 Escorts who make the grade to reach the International Festival, one man will be chosen by the Roses as the Escort of the Year and win €1000, a weekend break in any one of the Carlton Hotels and other great prizes. Once again, the Rose of Tralee Escorts will take part in a fundraising campaign for the charity organisation ‘1Life Turn The Tide of Suicide’. Escort of the year for 2010 Robbie Costelloe obviously got the job spot on the Roses voted him the top guy during the Festival. Here are his tips to be a winner, 1. Smile! Guys would give their right arm to be in your shoes so enjoy every minute. 2. Good manners mean everything James Bond knew how to treat a lady, learn from the master! 3. Only tell jokes if you can - Nothing worse than a joker who isn’t funny, just be yourself. 4. The clothes maketh the man - Always to be turned out the way your Mum would expect! 5. Listen! The most flattering thing you can give a woman is your undivided attention. For more information, simply log onto www.roseoftralee.ie and download an application form or telephone 066 712 1322. The closing date for receipt of completed application forms is Friday 22nd April. The 2011 Rose of Tralee International Festival will begin on Friday 19th August with the Gala Rose Ball. The Escort of the Year will be announced on live television on Monday 22nd while the next Rose of Tralee will be announced on Tuesday 23rd August.

Bathroom You might think, well what is there to change about your bathroom? If you really think about it, there are many things that can make even the bathroom be prepared for spring. It will sure make you feel the sense of the coming summer. A bathroom is also a place that you go into tired or when you just wake up from a sleep. Once you get into the shower you will find

house& home your full of energy and looking forward to the day or evening ahead. So by having everything in it’s place in your bathroom, it makes life easier and you can also use your time wisely. Remember keep it simple and clutter free, especially if you have a small bathroom you
will want to use minimalism in your plans and keep everything in it’s place. A nice plant can add that fresh spring feeling and give your bathroom a sense of life and colour, not to mention fragrance.
Spring Garden Spring is also the
time for re-planting all the flowers that died out and froze during the cold winter. So if you’re one of those who love taking care of their garden, off you go to the closest florist, buy your favourite flowers of different colours and all you’re left to do is to plant them. Before
you do so, you must make sure the grass is ploughed and all the unwanted plants are taken out from the soil. You must get all the equipment needed for working with the soil, which needs to be dug and prepared for the plants. When you’re finished with the soil, randomly space out
the flowers in your preference and don’t forget to water it. Voila! Your spring garden is ready. Your home is the most important place, so you should take care of it as much as you take care of yourself. Make it bright and enjoyable to be in. Feel the spring, whether you’re inside, or outside of your home.

Contd. from page 15 they can be great to allow in the fresh air but keep a room free from the brightness of the sun. Roller blinds are especially good as they can exploit the light of the sun, utilising a tinted colour in the material to accentuate colours of walls and floors. Blinds can also be quite decorative which finishes the touch to any ornate bathroom or bedroom, particularly if you have wooden floors to match with wooden venetian blinds as well. A window’s personal example of couture is found in it’s choice of dress; to make sure your little glass spy holes are worthy of the front page without curtains, then the uniqueness of blinds
is the favoured option. One particular edge is to use a roller blind which lets light filter through but with an additional tint of
colour in the material, that light then flows through the kitchen and beams off the walls to really give a roomy, natural feel to the
whole space while you experiment away in culinary bliss surrounded by nature’s shades. So for the piece de resistance, roof
windows with blinds on remote control. To lay back on a warm, comfy mattress and stare up at the sky gently falling into slumber under the night time’s little camp fires. One cannot disagree that it doesn’t get much more romantic than that.

Lisa Byrne, Rebecca Farrell and Donna Maloney focused on raising awareness about breast cancer as they had personal experience of the effects of this all to common illness. They felt the Marie Keating Foundation was a perfect organisation for the money they raised, as its main function is on early detection of breast cancer through their education and scanning. The Foundation funds Mobile Information units and provides support services to patients. Linda Keating thanked the students and gave her own personal account of why the Foundation was established. grandmother had rheumatoid arthritis from which she died at a young age. Although his grandmother died before he was born, Christopher’s mother told him how his father and siblings nursed her through this crippling illness. He organised a nonuniform day for the school, the proceeds of which he presented to Louise Moran from Arthritis Ireland. The money will go towards the Juvenile Arthritis Programme which helps over 1,000 young people with arthritis. All the sixth year students gathered in the sports hall to celebrate the efforts of these extraordinary young people and to witness the presentation of the cheques. Ms.Mc Grath, the Principal, made a great speech. She said, “These events remind us of the importance of thinking about those less fortunate than ourselves, especially when times are tough. If these young people are any indi-
cation of the calibre of students from Fingal Community College, we in Swords can be very proud,” concluded Ms McGrath.
