Furious Lusk Residents Slam Sewage Proposals Lusk Waste Watchers held a public meeting on Tuesday 29th May last to update locals on the proposed Monster Sewage treatment plant. Two of the proposed locations are in the Lusk areas at Newtowncorduff and Annsbrook. Local residents turned out in great numbers and were very angry at the proposals. Residents from Dun Emer estate, who did not wish to be identified, were “horrified” at the proposals. They said Lusk is “being put upon as we already have a prison and a dump and no other community in Ireland has that.” Margaret O’Connor and Maria Graham were very concerned about the smell the plant would bring and the potential damage to agriculture and tourism. Paul O’Brien said the proposals were a

By Peter Kearney “big disappointment” as “the North County is very scenic.” Lorcan O’Toole, of Lusk Waste Watchers, said the proposed Sewage Plant for the area “is not justified anywhere in the North County.” O’Toole feels it would be “too much burden for our community to bear.” He noted that during the 2011 General Election campaign, Minister Reilly campaigned on the slogan “This area needs a Minister.” O’Toole would like to ask Minister Reilly “What are you doing for us James?” Since his election, the North County has lost Metro North and is now faced with a Monster Sewage treatment plant on its doorstep. Deputy Mayor, Ken Farrell said, “for too long the people of the North County have been seen as a soft touch. He stated “there is no economic sense in running a pipeline from the city of Dublin to the North County where there is no sewage problem.” He continued “the people are united in their resistance to these proposals.” Meanwhile, a protest took place the following day at County Hall to coincide with the first of the consultation days. A group from the Reclaim Fingal Alliance were in attendance and

their spokesperson, Berniann Condon was convinced that the Council will ignore all submissions made to date. She told the County Leader, “We’re six months into making submissions and are we having a problem getting the consultation team to listen to us. They’re manipulating population projections to justify this monster sewage plant. Furthermore, they have done no cost benefit analysis for the project. In order to move tons of sewage from the Dublin area, it will take kilometres of orbital pipe; as much as 45 kilometres will be needed. With each kilometre costing € 10m, this amounts to a massive €450m before they get to the plant. The cost of the plant and the marine outfall is still unknown.” She urged a return to small plants beside the load centres, which make sense from an environmental and cost point of view.

The recent water leak on the Forest Road in Swords has come as no surprise to many local residents. The repair of this leak caused traffic chaos for residents of River Valley and surrounding estates and has been a source of anger for many local residents. This leak seems to occur at the exact same place, beside Colaiste Choilm on a regular basis. During the disruption, long queues of traffic caused massive congestion at Boroimhe, as users of the

By Patrick Finnegan Forest Road were forced to divert through this area on their way to and from work. The question asked by many residents in the area is when is this problem going to be solved for once and for all.? One exasperated resident, Fergal Horan from Ballintrane Wood, contacted the County Leader to express his anger and frustration at this latest closure of Forest Road. “It’s ridiculous. This is becoming

an annual event at least. I’d prefer to have the road closed for a week or two and have it done right, rather than these two or three day closures once a year.” He continued, “It’s the same spot over and over and you’d have to wonder if it’s the same pipe bursting all the time. What are the engineers doing.? This is an incredible waste of money,” he said. Local residents have expressed amazement that pipes are bursting in the middle of summer, when there has been no big freeze or any apparent reason for it to happen. They ask what is causing the pipes to burst on such a regular basis and who is at fault. Is the North County now becoming akin to a third world country.? Continued on page 13

Consultation days will take place on Thursday 14th June from 2-8pm and Saturday 16th June from 11-4pm. The final date for submissions on the proposed plant is Friday 6th July. Residents in the North County are encouraged to ask questions of the Council, at these open days, and to use them to voice their opposition to the proposals.

Wife Kerry, 32, added: "Painting the car on the garage door is as close as he's ever likely to get to it unless we win the lottery."

The Sunflower Chernobyl Children Dublin Region group have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to organise a calendar of events for the children. The Dublin Region group is a voluntary, not for profit group with no paid overheads or staff and all work is completed on a voluntary basis. Preparations include organising clothes for the children, as many only arrive with the clothes on their back. Other preparations also include organising toiletries for the children, as well as arts and crafts to keep them all busy. A schedule of outings is also being organised for July to keep the children occupied. The children are being hosted by families in the North County for the month, all with the voluntary support of the families. This one month respite is being organised for children from deprived or restricted backgrounds and this “break” will give them and their families back home a well-earned respite in advance of the harsh winter.

Call To Update Balbriggan Garda Resources Balbriggan Town councillor, Dermot Murray (FF), has called for the enhancement of Garda equipment given to local Gardaí. Murray tabled a motion to this effect at Balbriggan Town Council’s May meeting. He made the call following a large number of burglaries in the area and complaints from local residents, who believe Balbriggan Gardaí do not have the resources to catch those responsible for crime in the area. Murray’s motion called for “better and high powered vehicles to catch criminals” as “the current fleet of Garda cars are ageing.” The motion follows representations made to the councillor by local residents in Balbriggan. In spite of the limited resources, he believes Balbriggan Gardaí do an exceptional job. He would like to “thank Balbriggan Gardaí for apprehending criminals for previous break-ins in the area.”

Safety First At North County Beaches With the great bout of hot weather we had recently, many made sure to take advantage and hit the beach to soak up that sun. We’ve just been made aware that Lifeguard cover will be provided on beaches on a weekend basis only from 2nd July until the 26th August Therefore during this warm spell please be aware that there are NO lifeguards present at the moment. We would ask everyone using the beach to keep an eye on swimmers in the water and to look out for one another as we enjoy this great weather! Keep Safe! It is envisaged that week day cover will commence from the 2nd July until the 26th of August. This will depend on staff levels and weather. The service hours are 11.00 am until 7.00 pm. The presence of lifeguards on duty is indicated by the flying of the red/yellow flag. A red flag flown indicates that the guards are present but the public should not bathe. No Euphoria As North County Says Yes The people of Dublin North have spoken and have voted in favour of the Fiscal Compact Treaty, by a reasonably comfortable majority, reflecting the national trend. The total number of people who turned out to vote was 36,798,

which represents 52.9 per cent of the electorate. A total of 60.43 per cent voted in favour of the treaty, while 39. 57 per cent opposed it. The County Leader gauged the feeling of some of the elected representatives in the

By Patrick Finnegan aftermath of the vote. Even among the Yes campaigners, there was no sense of euphoria. Deputy Brendan Ryan (Lab), describes the 60 per cent of the electorate who voted in

favour of the Fiscal Compact Treaty in Dublin North as “encouraging and evidence that people want stability.” Ryan also notes that two fifths of the electorate in Dublin North which voted against the Treaty saying “this demonstrates that there is a sizeable group of the electorate still unconvinced by Government policy”. “I met many people

during the campaign who remain disenchanted, frustrated and angry at politics and the political system. 40 per cent of the electorate in Dublin North voted against the Treaty. This is just a small step in the right direction. Now, as a country, we need to see emphasis on a proper growth agenda and a real deal on the bank debt.,” he said. Deputy Alan Farrell (FG) was disappointed with the turnout, but happy with the result. There was a great effort put in by everyone across

party lines to bring in a Yes vote. I recognise that there is a lot of anger out there, but this result puts us in a better position to negotiate with our European partners,” he said. Minister James Reilly told the County Leader that he was particularly pleased with the size of the majority in the North County’ “I commend the people who worked so hard to achieve an outcome to secure the success of the country.” Meanwhile, Clare Daly (SP), who vigourously opposed the treaty told

the County Leader, “Dublin North voted pretty much similarly to the rest of the country, which is no surprise. Overall fear triumphed over anger, but the Government would be badly mistaken if they interpreted this result as an endorsement of their policies. There are bigger issues in Europe now, like Spain and Greece to worry about, than whether we pass this referendum or not. This will not stop us continuing our fight against austerity,” she said.

A Case For Special Branch

Fed-up neighbours are suspected of putting the brakes on the antics of a boy racer - by hoisting his car to the top of a tree. Zbigniew Filo, 24 who doesn't even have a licence - woke to find his souped up white Ford Escort dangling from a huge willow tree in Lubczyna, Poland. Police spokesman Marta Pierko said "Perhaps he'll think twice about his hair-raising driving and about getting a licence or who knows where his next car might end up?"

Inspiration For Terrific Teens Orla Burrowes is currently the lynchpin in the Swords branch of Localise, an organisation that’s been providing a forum for socially-aware young entrepreneurs throughout Ireland for almost four decades. It’s a group that nurtures early teenagers’ hope to contribute to their communities by translating their imagination and energy into practical success. “I got involved through my daughter Jasmine,” she tells the County Leader. “She came home from St Colmcille’s GNS one day telling me that this man was in from Localise looking for people to get involved in the group but they needed mammies and daddies to take part.” Intrigued by her daughter’s enthusiasm, Orla began giving her considerable organisational skills to Localise and has since become a wellknown and welcome aid to a huge network of Swords organisations. Localise was the brainchild of Fr John Wall, who set it up 40 years ago. We’re affiliated with the Catholic Youth Council and a part of the Swords/Baldoyle youth services. “We started here four years ago and to get it off the ground in Swords, Fr Cyril Mangan rang Localise head office who sent Wojciech (pronounced Voycheck) and the director Derek out to chat with us. Once we’d an idea what was involved, Fr Cyril put it out over the altar that he wanted to start this programme for children going into secondary school.” She explains that while it was initially for children in secondary, since then Localise has broadened its scope to allow kids from sixth class too. “It’s a weekly get together for kids between say 12 and 15 years old, it coincides with their school term so we’d meet every Tuesday night from September to May. “They’re just ordinary kids from different backgrounds – for instance, the newest members we brought in there last year there were quite a few from different ethnic groups. Whether you or your young teen wants to simply have something fun to do on Tuesday nights or if the goal is to boost their chances in getting “an easy” honour in the Junior Cert, introducing them to the group is a fab way to do it. “Civic, social and political education for Junior Cert students is one of the exam subjects they can do now. And Localise has been taken up by a number of second-levels schools,” she continues, outlining how participation in the events they run can underpin the child’s coursework. “Looking at the mission statement, our programme ‘invites people to make a difference to their locality, encourages their confidence, develops their talent, allows them to experience leadership through service, inspires them to help others, and gives them a great chance to build

their social skills’. The weekly meetings are held in the drop in youth centre that the CYC runs during the day (in the laneway beside the Pink Elephant). “We never ask children’s background, all are welcome to our group regardless of their situation, there could be kids with financial issues, but who hasn’t financial issues these days?” That youth centre will remain open till August and reopen in September, is as central for teens who may have been calling into the Baptist-run drop in centre beside St Finian’s school and will miss it when it moves to Kinsealy later this year. As ‘the more the merrier’ seems to be the motto, the Localise activities specific to the Tuesdaynight, term-time club are designed to spark the kids’ sense of fun and engagement. “These kids want to help the community and we’re facilitating them,” Orla explains. “There’s another Localise in Rivervalley, which is even bigger than ours and we’d hook up with them every now and again.” Typically each September’s intake comes up with a ‘wish list’: “The kids make a list of what they’d like to achieve during the coming year. It could be a trip to Funtasia, Glendalough, visiting the kids in St Michael’s House, being Bingo callers at the Senior Citizens, a make-up party or whatever. “We raised money for Focus Ireland, that was the best one we did, it raised €2,000. We had a cake sale for the homestart programme for young families and children in crisis. And all the events are down to just their subs (€2 weekly) and the effort they put into it. We gave Trocaire €250 this year as well. Or it could be the Heart Foundation, depending on what the kids want to do.” Orla’s firm on what’s expected of the kids and their parents. “It’s not a youth club per se,” she says. “We’re all working in full-time jobs and we do the Localise work in our own time. While we’re able to tell each other if we’re around the following week for the meetings, it’s the events, which could be on a Saturday or Sunday and we’ve to rope in extra adults that can be tricky.” She’s looking forward to November of this year when all Localise groups will get together to celebrate the organisation’s 40th birthday. “Ah it’ll be great – old and new members will get to meet and the volunteer adults who may have grown up with the organisation will be at it. But for now she’s looking forward to the summer break. She’ll come back refreshed and full of zing for the new school term. “It is unusual to get any child to do something for their community so to get them enjoying it as a group over the course of their secondary school years is a great feeling.”

“These kids want to help the community and we’re facilitating them,”

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH Time To Fix Water Leaks Permanently Continued from page 1 We have just sorted out an ESB problem and now we can’t sort out our water. Only about six weeks ago, the Forest Road junction with Cooks Road at Forrest Little Golf Club was disrupted when a major leak occurred. Another source of anger for residents is the lack of information supplied by the Council. It’s a joke now that the local authority insist on communicating with the public by tweet or by facebook. How do they communicate information like upcoming road closures to people who are not computer literate and who rely on traditional means of communication.? The County Leader contacted the Council regarding the latest leak and a spokesperson said, “The burst has now been repaired and we are replenishing water supplies to reservoirs in the North County. There have been a number of bursts recently on this water main, but they have been further up the Forest Road near

the Golf Club or down at Balheary. The statement continued, “The underlying issue is that this water main was originally laid around 1970 and it is due to be replaced.

located in the field across the road from the Golf Club.” The controversial household and NPPR charges have been introduced and the hope is that they will be used to permanently repair or replace old pipes that need constant attention. The local authority has confirmed that a total of €4.6 million has been collected through the household charge and a whopping €10,885,240 has been collected through the NPPR charges since it’s introduction in 2009. This

The scene on the Forest Road in Swords, where the road was blocked for two days due to a water leak.

This will be a substantial job which we hope will begin in late 2013 or early 2014. In the meantime we have no option other than to carry out repairs as required. There is a further repair scheduled on the Forest Road for Thursday 7th June. The leak is

money was supposed to be used for such eventualities as unexpected water leaks. The question on the lips of many citizens is how this windfall will be used and if the quality of the lives of people in the North County will be improved, as a result.

There were football matches played to the delight of the watching parents and friends and bouncy castles for the young and energetic. A bar-b-que, the award ceremony and the fabulous sunshine ensured a great day was had by all. Well done to the club for a great family day!
