Top Man Pat Retires From Council L

eading County Council official, Pat Keane has retired after serving in the local council since its inception in 1994. Keane headed up the Finance section and was a particularly popular member of staff.

By Patrick Finnegan

Pat Keane, who has retired as Finance Director at Fingal County Council is pictured at his retirement party in County Hall Swords with his wife, Margaret and daughter, Orla.

A retirement party was held for him in County Hall last Tuesday evening, 28th February and was attended by a large gathering of his friends and colleagues in the local authority. Originally from Listowel in Co Kerry, and now domiciled in Ashbourne, he is an avid Kerry GAA supporter and goes to see them at every opportunity. “I have seen some great players wear the green and gold over the years, but Jack O’Shea was the greatest of them all,” he said. At the last full Council meeting last month, tributes flowed from all sections of the Chamber and everyone was full of praise for the budgets and other work presented by Pat in the course of his work. He was also renowned for his dry

Local Chambers Get Ready For Year Ahead The five local Chambers of Commerce in the North County are in the process of getting themselves ready for what many analysts believe will be a challenging year ahead for many of their members. Working closely with it’s members, the Chambers are constantly reviewing and updating policies to promote, lobby and influence the decision-makers on all matters of concern to local business. They are always active in encouraging and nurturing new and established businnesses in their areas. Fingal Dublin Chamber and Balbriggan Chamber held their annual AGM’s last Thursday,

1st March and vowed to continue the great work of the previous chambers. CEO, Tony Lambert said, “The year ahead promises to be both exciting and challenging for our chamber, with a new structure and a council of 30 members to guide the chamber. We will be building a stronger, more sustainable structure to represent businesses.” Lambert continued, “For many businesses, the chamber is

an essential part of their companies. We provide many unique networking opportunities for business men and women in the North County area,” he concluded. The Balbriggan and District Chamber AGM was well attended by members wishing to hear about the Chamber’s performance in 2011 A new Executive Council was

elected along with Executive Officers. Joe English the outgoing President was succeeded by Kevin Tolan who said, “I am looking forward to working with the newly elected Executive Committee. We have much hard work to do to combat the difficult economic climate, but I believe Balbriggan Chamber has a pivotal role in achieving continued success for Balbriggan.’ Malahide Chamber have announced a new arrival in the form of their redesigned Chamber website which is now on-line. President Al Ryan told the County Leader: “We try to play our part. The Chamber is a place to represent business with one voice and to help us coordinate business in

the community for the benefit of community activity. We are fully supportive of community events, as we know that any contribution we can make will come back to the benefit of all,” he said. The Malahide AGM will be held at the end of March in conjunction with the Business Awards, and this year, they are looking for a new President as Al Ryan’s term ends in March. He had one final rallying call for all chamber members when he said, “We need to remind ourselves that not all is bad out there and there are strong positive things happening. The hard times can sometimes bring out the best in people and we need

sense of humour and County Mayor, Gerry McGuire recalled the visit of All Ireland champions, Dublin to County Hall, with the Sam Maguire Cup at the end of last year. “The place was festooned in blue and navy, but a Kerry flag mysteriously made it’s way into the famed cup. All eyes turned to Pat, who had a mischievous look on his face,” he said. He started work with Kerry County Council and four years later moved to Dublin, where he took up a similar position with Dublin County Council. He remained with them until the formation of Fingal County Council in 1994. He has always been involved in finance and his motto is simplicity itself - “You can’t spend what you haven’t got.” Pat is a keen golfer and is a member of Elm Green Golf Club and is now in an ideal position to reduce his handicap. In his time at the local authority, he served under four County Managers, Davie Byrne, Willie Soffe, John Tierney and David O’Connor. His attention to detail and keen wit will be sorely missed by all.

to look after each other,” he concluded. Likewise, Skerries Chamber will hold their AGM at the end of this month and President

Martin Scully was very upbeat about the prospects for the year. “We are planning our St Patrick’s Day parade and thereafter, we

have great plans for a community garden in the town which will benefit everyone. It will be a trying year Contd. on page 9

Donabate School Wins Prestigious Award The state-of-the-art, Donabate Community College has been awarded ‘Best Educational Building’ at the recent Local Authority Members Association (LAMA) Awards at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Santry. The new school won the award in the ‘Best Educational Building’ category. Donabate Community College meets the needs of both young people and the community at large who had campaigned for a secondary school in the area for 20 years. Previously secondary school students had to attend schools in nearby areas, such as Malahide, Swords and Portmarnock. The 1000 pupil Community College opened its new state-of-the-art building in September 2011. The college was up against four other educational buildings in the category,

including Beam Services Training Centre in Carlow, Finn Valley College in Donegal, The Art House Studios & Library in Laois and GMIT Castlebar Innovation in Business Centre in Mayo. Hosted by broadcaster Miriam O’Callaghan, The LAMA Awards recognise significant projects throughout the country, which are nominated by a local councillor or council in order to be shortlisted with the winners chosen by an esteemed panel of judges. The ceremony commends individuals, initiatives, private companies and people for their outstanding contributions and projects of benefit to the community. All winners are presented with a bespoke, engraved crystal trophy.

Rush Policing Service Will Be Unaffected Following the announcement that Rush Garda Station is to be closed in the near future, the police force would like to emphasise to the community that the current policing service will not be affected. Currently, the Gardai at Lusk and Rush operate on a complementary basis. This means that if Rush Station is closed, Lusk Station will provide cover for the Rush sub-district and vice versa. The members attached to both stations are thoroughly familiar with both sub-districts. The number of Garda personnel currently allocated to the Rush and Lusk sub-districts will not be reduced, nor will the resources currently available between the two stations. The Gardai, who are familiar with the two areas will continue to provide the policing service to the community of Rush and Lusk. This service is augmented by a 24 hour response available from Skerries and Balbriggan Garda Stations. A public meeting will be held at 8.30pm on Tuesday, 13th March at St. Maur’s GAA Club in Rush to discuss this issue and all are welcome to attend.

A Fond Farewell For Swords Sergeant words came out in force to wish Sergeant Pat Thornton all the best on his retirement from An Garda Síochána. A native of Foxford Co. Mayo, Pat joined the force almost 39 years ago after spending time in London.

By Peter Kearney You could even say that there is blue blood in his veins, as his uncle Jim Thornton served from 1944 until 1988. Prior to serving the last 17 years in Swords, Pat served in Donegal, Clones and Rathfarnham. On his retirement, Pat says he will “miss the craic” and most of all “winding people up.” Indeed Pat's good humour was evident all night in the many stories he told and in the light-hearted stories that near and dear friends relayed also. The atmosphere at the Star in Swords was very friendly, as people came from

far and wide to greet Pat with gifts and great warmth. There were representatives from the several Garda stations across the North County, members of the legal and business community as well as locals who had become good friends. One of these good friends was a husband and wife, who themselves had been victims of a most awful criminal assault. They came across the city to wish him well and to say a very special thank you for the support he gave them through their personal trauma. Even though he is in retirement, Pat says he will “find it hard to keep still”. He says that he may even spend more time with, his now local GAA club, Clann Mhuire in the Naul. We wish Pat all the best in his retirement and we are sure that he will be still making his presence felt in the North County again very soon.

Graffiti is another issue raised constantly and some residents presented photos taken of graffiti-stained areas around Balbriggan. “A 10-11 year old doing graffiti or other similar things is not antisocial behaviour, it is just bad parenting. There is a lot that parents can do to reduce this,” said Declan Yeats. “Graffiti is a serious problem for the community and it is a criminal offence to do this.” Residents were advised to establish neighbourhood watch groups, plant ivy that will obscure targeted walls over time and parents were also asked to discuss this with their children. All the issues that were brought up will be investigated and feedback will be given at the next meeting.

Local Groups To Join Swords Parade

Good News For Seven Local Schools

Local groups, clubs and organisations have been invited to take part in the 2012 Swords St Patrick’s Day Parade with another feast of celebrations lined up. With less than two weeks to the big day, final arrangements for the parade are being made following its successful return to Swords last year after more than a decade. Organised once more by Swords Le Chéile, the parade will begin at 12pm on Saturday, 17th March. Street performers, stilt walkers and balloon modellers have all been lined up this year, along with Viking warriors and Special Forces, who will be joining dozens of local groups and clubs. The theme of the parade will be ‘Youth’ and Swords Youth Service will be providing a grand marshal to accompany County Mayor, Cllr Gerry McGuire, in an open-top vintage car. “The parade is a very special day to celebrate all that is best in Ireland – the food, the music, the people, the fun and craic. We want to grow the tradition in Swords by giving the many sporting and community organisations in the area the opportunity to participate in the parade,’ said the organisation’s chairman, Joe Harford. Local businesses have been asked to make a special effort to create promotions and activities around St Patrick’s Day and a carnival atmosphere is expected once more.

Ballyboughal Pitch And Putt Competition The Bartle McDonnell Shield Competition, the first club major of the year, was held at Ballyboughal Pitch and Putt club recently and it proved to be a great boost for the club. This year the proceeds will be

going to Temple St ICU, via local man Peter Donegan’s forthcoming half marathon run on Inis Mor in March. The winner of the Bartle Maxwell Shield by the closest of margins of one stroke was Jimmy Browne with a net 45. while the runner up on net 46 was John Fitzpatrick . Nearest the pin on the day was Vince Walker. Congratulations to Jimmy Browne, having first won this competition back in 1992.

Local TD, Alan Farrell (FG) has congratulated seven schools from the North County who have been offered government grants to replace existing prefabricated units with permanent accommodation, as part of a national initiative undertaken by the Minister for Education, Ruairi Quinn TD. Speaking to the County Leader, Farrell said: “It is my view that the practice of renting prefabricated buildings has been one of the biggest fail- Alan Farrell TD ures of our education system over the past ten years. Prefab units should have been a short term solution, not a long one for expanding schools.” “Parents and teachers have never been comfortable sending children to school in prefab units, particularly those with issues of damp and temperature regulation

problems. I have visited schools around the North County and met teachers and parents who have been campaigning for a resolution to these sub standard prefabs.” He continued: “It is for this reason that I understand the importance of this announcement to these schools, Naul National School, Scoil Phadraic in Donabate, Realt Na Mara in Skerries, St. Peter and Paul’s National School, and St Teresa’s in Balbriggan, and St. Colmcille’s and Holy Family, River Valley in Swords, all of whom I am certain will take full advantage of this investment for their students gain. This investment in young people is a remarkable achievement for the Department of Education and will be of enormous benefit to children across the county.”

Post Office Payment Urged

Local deputy, Brendan Ryan (Lab), has urged Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Phil Hogan to include the post office as a payment option for the Household Charge. Ryan said: “If this is a problem for North County Dublin, then it must be an even greater problem in rural Ireland where the distances to local authority offices are even greater. In response to a Parliamentary Question tabled by Ryan, Minister Hogan said he was satisfied that there is a “comprehensive suite of payment options” available to persons with a liability to pay the household charge. However, Ryan has received a large number of enquiries from older people and those who live in rural North County Dublin who either do not have Internet access nor is it convenient for them to travel to their local authority office, upwards of

However, a large number of older people and those who live in rural areas are frustrated at the lack of ‘bricks and mortar’ options available for them to pay the charge. “I am disappointed the Minister did not seek to include the post office as a payment option as it would have been very convenient for a great many people. Also, I am sure it would have resulted in a higher number of registrations and payments at this point. I will be writing to the Minister this week asking him to revisit his answer to my Parliamentary Question with a view to bringing the post office “within the comprehensive suite of payment options”.

HOROSCOPES AQUARIUS

Jan 20 - Feb 18

It’s easy to say that letting go of the past is a prelude to a wonderful future. But relinquishing elements of your life that are as reassuring as they’re familiar is quite another matter. Signs indicate not to do anything drastic.

PISCES

Feb 19 - Mar 20

A rewarding week when dealing with personal relationships, when intriguing developments force you into action. In fact, you’ll enjoy dealing with these issues so much that you wonder why you delayed for so long.

ARIES

Mar 21 - Apr 20

Once you begin to discuss problems openly you realise how willing others are to help you resolve them. In fact, this is what helps you this week to tackle dilemmas that you thought you’d just have to live with.

TAURUS

Apr 21 - May 20

The troubles you had last week, especially in the workplace, are about to be completely reversed, as those who thought they’d got away with their misdemeanours discover that they’ll have to pay the piper after all.

The lovely Marijka Bardin from Skerries, is our first girl to be featured in North County Leader who is hoping to be the Dublin Rose of Tralee this year. Bubbly, bright and outgoing, the talented 19 year old appears wise

beyond her years as she sits down to tell us a bit about herself ahead of the upcoming selection nights. Marjika’s name means Mary in Dutch, her own mother Mary wanted a unique name for her daughter and she’s certainly succeeded, her name is very intriguing and a great conversation starter. Marijka lives at home with her parents, three sisters and brother and her dog, Sally. She is extremely close to her family and considers her siblings to be among her best friends. Marjika is being sponsored by the Alzheimer Society of Ireland. She is very

passionate about working with people who suffer from Alzheimers. She has done volunteer work for the society in the past and her mother Mary is a Day Centre manager there. With work-related matters things are about to play into your hands. This so improves your position - and your spirits - that you can well afford to wait until next week, when those around you will finally see things your way.

Cancer

Jun 21 - Jul 22

This is a week when you begin to revitalise elements of your life that you’d given up on ever being exciting. And, better yet, you realise how unimportant difficult and interfering people are in the scheme of things.

Leo

Jul 23 - Aug 23

With all aspects of your life this week, your mood is grim. Complain if you want. Just keep in mind that, by the time next week, with its spectacular planetary activity, is over, you’ll be singing a much happier tune.

Virgo

Aug 24 - Sep 22

Having laboured over decisions involving work, you’re in no mood for change. However, indications are that these decisions are out of your hands - but, the disruption may not be as bad as you first thought.

Libra

Sep 23 - Oct 22

Don’t be too disheartened if the week seems slow - as change is coming. So much so, that with the week’s far more agreeable planetary activity, you’re able to move swiftly to take advantage of new prospects on offer.

Scorpio

Oct 23 - Nov 22

This is a week when you should be philosophical about downturns - and keep your own counsel. With next week’s far more salubrious planetary activity, you’ll be glad you didn’t say everything you were thinking.

Sagittarius

Nov 23 - Dec 21

However unsettling the outcome of one particular confrontation, finally having all the facts out in the open will come as a relief. Still, you should handle the situation carefully and slowly as things are bound to be confused.

Capricorn

Dec 22 - Jan 19

You will be seeking reassurance with a business matter. But what you need to do is exercise patience to bide your time - until you see the stunning opportunities accompanying next week’s considerably better planetary activity.

go down the teaching route, she had the acting bug. She did a lot of acting when she was younger and was involved in Rush Dramatic Society when she was in school. Clearly displaying a talent for the craft, she was spotted by an an agent from London who got her an audition for a film called ‘The Blackwater Lightship,’ which was based on a novel by Colm Toibin. This audition resulted in her getting a lead role in the production. Quite an achievement for an 11 year old! “It was a 'Once in a Lifetime' opportunity and a fantastic experience, she said. “Afterwards, I started attending Secondary School and knew I couldn’t do both as you can be away working on a film for weeks on end. I knew that my education had to come first. I still kept the acting up in school though. Clearly an all rounder when it came to school, she not only excelled in her studies and acting, but was also involved in various sports such as badminton and basketball and won medals in some of the school competitions. She is also fond of dance and won first place in a competition when she was 10. Marjika was also actively involved in doing some fundraising work at Rush Nursing Home. "I used to love going down to help out, the place was so full of interesting people and everyone had great stories to tell." Her whole family are thrilled that she is involved with the Rose and Marjika says her nomination was a complete surprise. “The first I heard of it was when I got a phone call!, she says, laughing. “But I’m delighted to be involved in it all nonetheless and I'm so looking forward to it. I think it's a terrific contest to be a part of. She finishes off by saying that it would mean the

world to her if she were crowned as the Rose Of Tralee. "My motto in life is: it's not what happens

to you, it's how you deal with it." We wish Marjika the best of luck in the competition.

Successful Wedding Showcase At Kettles

North County Living by Aine Hannah

Kettles Country Hotel in Rolestown, outside Swords recently held a very successful Wedding Showcase. It attracted a huge turnout, which resulted in a wonderful atmosphere, generating much excitement amongst the gathering. People looking for choice knew that they came to the right place, with large, medium and intimate wedding receptions well catered for. There

A Guiding Light For Young Girls International Women’s Day took the theme of “Connecting Girls” for 2012 and that idea has been the cornerstone of girls’ organisations for generations. The County Leader spoke to Captain Caron Neale of the Girls' Brigade about her company in Swords. All of the established organisations, such as the Catholic Girl Guides, the various Scout troops and the Girls’ Brigade, have been enjoying a resurgence of popularity with kids and their parents. Depending on where you would like your little lotus to blossom, you may like to steer her into an all-girls outfit to balance time spent in a mixed-gender school or vice versa. Perhaps your shy princess can only be coaxed out of her comfort zone when she has an older brother or sister in the same club. Or maybe you’re looking for after-school activities that bolster their faith while they make friends and have fun, which is what the Girls' Brigade is all about. “We’re active for most of the school year and during that time, take the same holidays as schools do,” explains Caron. “That’s because during the breaks you might have only half the group and, especially when you’re doing team work, it’s not worth holding meetings to teach four when there should be eight.” The Girls Brigade’s aim is to: “help girls become followers of Jesus Christ; our motto is ‘seek, serve and follow Christ’. “We meet on Wednesday evenings from 5.30pm and it’s non-stop till 9.30pm. We start the sessions with the tiny tots under fives; then at 5 o’clock they can join the explorers, become a junior at nine years old and then a senior. A brigadier is usually from 14 years, but then you can become an associate once you’re over 18 and that can go on as long as you want.” Caron has been in the organisation since she was three years old, starting in the company in Drumcondra where she remained until a need was identified in Swords and she established the 45th company. “Three of us moved, myself, Karen and Meriel,” she smiles, and as another of the associates pops into the interview room, adds “and then we roped in Sonya, Sharon, Liz, Tara and Jill. “Somebody has to be captain, but really we all do it, we started out with 60-65 girls in the company and it’s great. We’re expanding all the time and next year we’ll be celebrating 10 years in Swords. Typically, the companies are attached to a particular church – the 45th is attached to St Columba’s Church of Ireland church across the road from the Parish Hall – but you don’t have to be a member of that specific church to send your daughter to any of the local Girls’ Brigade companies. The officers have undergone various types of formal leadership training on top of the practises they’ve been taught as brigadiers, and like all youth groups’ organisers now, are Garda vetted every five years. Most of the stuff fondly remembered by women the world over is still reiterated at every meeting. The

girls work towards badges to denote skills learned, there are crafts, scripture and physical education, they go to camp and there are inter-company competitions where they can meet other girls from around Ireland. “It’s about having fun and we find that if you drill them too much for competitions it takes the fun out of it,” adds Caron. “It takes an awful lot of dedication from the parents every week to bring their kids not just here, but to underpin their achievements with their own time.” This company of Girls Brigade isn’t the only one whose ranks have been swelled with ‘new Irish’ or non-nationals who are delighted to sign their girls up for scripture lessons along with the arts and crafts’ badges. “Some of the companies are huge now,” says Caron. “I suppose one of the lesser-known benefits of their being in the brigade is that they have friends across different strands of their lives. Some of the under-fives we have will go to ‘big school’ together, or some of our girls who attend primary school here will have readymade friends when they move on to secondary school.” As a proud parent herself, she knows how much of parents’ time is precious. “My own five kids range from 21 down to seven years old, we’ve four girls and one boy in the middle, so I know that they’re trying to juggle all their kids’ clubs and do what they have to do at home as well. “We used to split the Girls Brigade here between a weeknight and Saturday mornings, but it meant that it was two days gone, which for the parents who have boys and football as well, made it a bit manic. “This is our second year running all the groups on Wednesday night and it’s going brilliantly. Not every company does things the same way, and we even wouldn’t have exactly the same activities every year – some years there might be a weekend away for one age group and the following year for another one – but the show at the end of the year is a huge highlight for us all.” Some of the girls may have been working on musical theatre, and whatever other activities the girls have done during the year is included in the year-end display. “There’s great excitement, the hall is packed with the girls’ families, they all come and watch the younger ones do singing games or skipping, their parents see them skipping and there’s the flash of the cameras and the squeals of their parents when their own child performs, it’s a great show and we’re as proud of them as their parents. It’s also when we get to thank our husbands and our own families for the support they’ve given us during the year. We wouldn’t do it if we didn’t love it.” On this International Women’s Day, Captain Caron and her team are heading into the home stretch for this year. “It finishes at the end of April, and we can all enjoy the whole break for the summer and start all over again, come mid-September.”

“It’s about having fun and we find that if you drill them too much for competitions it takes the fun out of it,”

Mother’s Day Lunch Sunday March 18th in The Great Hall

Mother’s Day is a very special day to mothers of all ages across the North County. Being a mother is a great gift and something that a girl dreams about all her life. However, if you’re a mother having that special day to yourself is just so nice. Or maybe your children have grown up and you might want to make it a big occasion and go out for a beautiful day with them. No matter what you do, make sure you enjoy your day as it’s only once a year. If you’re one of the lucky mums who will get treated to a present, there are so many different things to choose from, providing you’re asked in advance, or if not, now might be a good chance to drop a hint or two! She’s your mum, so you’ll most likely have a fairly good

idea what she likes. It’s always a thoughtful idea to get her something that she will spend on herself, a spa treatment or mini weekend away is an ideal gift. It’s the thought that counts so even if you may not have the budget to go and splash out, a personalised token will go down a treat. Just make sure you mark it in some small way as your mammy more than deserves it and she’ll make you pay for the forgetfulness next year! The traditional flowers and chocolates are always there too, if you’re really stuck for ideas.

Pamper Your Mum Mum’s spend their whole life pampering their children so now it’s time for ‘Mum Time’. If you’re thinking about

what you can get for your mother this Mother’s Day, the North County offers everything a woman could want. From pampering in one of the many beautiful beauticians or hair

salons, to dinner at one of the great North County restaurants. Not to mention all the great shops were you can pick your brilliant mum up a fabulous present that will have all her friends

feeling very envious indeed. Don’t be afraid to spoil her rotten for the day. Most of all mammies, enjoy your day and make the most of it, you are worth it.
