Swords Couples’ Kindness Reaches Uganda Ever since Swords husband and wife, Tony and Terri Burke adopted their beautiful three and a half year old daughter, Jovia from Uganda, they have been involved in helping to make life easier for people there. They have been sending donation boxes to Uganda, in an effort to change the lives of workers in the Sanyu Babies Home in Kampala, Uganda’s capital city. It’s the oldest and best established Babies Home in the country. These hard pressed workers are known as ‘mamas’ and they work tirelessly for little or nothing and live in slums. Terri told the County Leader about how she became involved with the donation boxes. “When we were adopting Jovia, we spent two months in Kampala and got to know the local customs and a taste for life there. The mamas keep the place going and ask for very little and we thought that they deserved something for themselves.” The boxes are full of top quality second hand clothes, shoes and handbags which have been donated by friends and family. Indeed, some of the clothes are brand new. The mamas use these for their own use. Terri explained that the mamas

By Patrick Finnegan work from 7am to 7pm, six days a week for little or nothing. They never complain and make sure that the children are well looked after. They know that the boxes are arriving and they get really excited. The thought of gifts arriving from a far off land is very exciting for them. They particularly love the handbags. Fingalians GAA Club have also donated some football jerseys, which will be paraded around Kampala,” said Terri. As the boxes are quite heavy, they are expensive to ship to Uganda. This is where Swords and District Credit Union came to the rescue. They sponsored the cost of shipment with DHL. “Fiona Cunningham and Darren O’Reilly from the Credit Union were a great help to us and also Pat Byrne from DHL,” said Terri. She also explained the impact the box will have on the mamas. “This will make a huge difference in their lives. They always seem to be overlooked and this means the world to them. We’ve already sent several boxes to Kampala since 2010, when we adopted Jovia,” she said.

Broadband Rollout For Rush And Skerries Local TD Brendan Ryan (Lab), has welcomed the inclusion of Rush and Skerries in Phase IV of the rollout of Eircom’s Fibre Broadband. When fully rolled out, locals will be able to avail of a speed up to 70Mbp. This is great news for businesses in Rush and Skerries, as they now join the North County towns of Balbriggan, Swords and Donabate in the new scheme. These are very popular tourist towns and with the high volume of residents, community groups and visitors that would use the businesses on a daily basis, it is essential to have a fast and reliable broadband scheme. With this in mind, Deputy Ryan was very positive about the announcement. Speaking to the County Leader, he said: “This is welcome news for businesses and

Overall this is good news for the North County. The provision of high quality Broadband is vitally needed throughout the country to promote business growth and education.” Chairman of Skerries Chamber of Commerce, Martin Scully also expressed his delight at the decision. He told the County Leader: “Anything that will improve our services around the North County and in Skerries in particular, is always welcomed. Hopefully, this will give a boost to our local businesses who rely heavily on a high quality broadband service.”

Warren And Chris Meet The Parents After the great news of their engagement last week, it was down to earth with a bang, as they decided to meet their parents and introduce them to each other. The happy couple were expecting some resistance, as the families have had ‘a bit of history’ in the past. They decided to meet at St Finian’s GAA Clubhouse, before retiring to Peacock’s for a celebratory drink afterwards. Warren was very sceptical about the meeting and said, “I didn’t know how it would go, particularly my mother, who is very protective of me. It’s great

that it went so well.” he said. He need not have bothered, as his mother, Maree was thrilled that at last, he had found a lovely girl. I’ll be delighted to call her my daughter-inlaw,” gushed Maree. Brigid, Chris’s mother also gave her blessing to the union, although some believe that she thinks Chris could have done better! Always protective of her daughter, she said, “Chris was always a little treasure and could have had her pick of lads. She was always a bit of a tomboy and the boys took to her immediately. Now that she’s settled for him, I couldn’t be more thrilled.” Warren, who is captain of the local GAA club has always had his eye on Chris ever since he saw her demolish the opposition in a recent camogie match in the club. The fact that Chris’s father, also called Paddy was not there could be interpreted as disapproval, as he’s wary of

Balbriggan Celebrates Marathon Win

DINING ROOM

Kenyan runner, Geoffrey NDungu was celebrating last week as he emerged the winner of the Dublin Marathon for the second year in a row. But the celebrations were not just in Geoffrey’s camp; his win was also celebrated in Balbriggan.

SALE NOW ON

By Jennifer McShane In 2011, Geoffrey was invited to participate in the Dublin Marathon by Balbriggan Town Council because of a strong Partnership Agreement between the town and the City of St Wendel in Germany. The link with Balbriggan is due to St Wendel’s involvement in an initiative to promote athletics through a partnership between Furstenfield in Austria and the Bushtrekkers Club in Kenya. The programme is called Run2gether and is primarily aimed at nurturing talented runners from Europe and Kenya. Through the combined efforts of St Wendel, Balbriggan Town Council and the County Council last year, three Kenyan runners travelled to Dublin for the event. Then this year, Geoffrey returned to Dublin to participate and won again. Speaking to the County Leader, Stephen Peppard from the County Council said, “The

partnership we have built up with St Wendel and the athletics element of that relationship supports what we want to achieve within the North County. Geoffrey’s achievements last year helped to raise awareness of that event and made it all the more worthwhile. We are hoping to continue our commitment to athletics during 2013 with more events throughout the North County.”

Paul Devine, Swords “It’s becoming the norm alright. I’m not surprised anymore, you’d nearly be shocked if you didn’t read something like that on the front pages. According to Minister Shatter, crime has gone down. I’m not sure. It seems to be commonplace now.”

Kieran Kennedy, River Valley “I was only talking about this last night. Just every time you open the paper, there are murders being reported, every single day of the week. You wouldn’t see that 40 years ago. Every day now it seems.”

Deirdre Cole, Cork “I suppose it sells papers. It’s either violent crimes or the Troika in the headlines. I don’t think violent crimes are increasing, I just think we are more aware of it due to all the coverage in the papers, on television, on the radio and on the internet. I think all the public attention the criminals are receiving could be feeding into their egos.”

All businesses generously donated their services for the night. Beauty and well-being treatments were provided at significantly reduced rates. Concern Over Hazardous Swords Crossing By Patrick Finnegan Well known Swords activist, Joe Newman has brought a serious safety issue in Swords to the attention of the County Leader. He highlighted the fact that it is well nigh impossible to cross the road at Pinnock Hill Roundabout to access Airside Shopping Centre in safety. Newman is mystified that there is no pedestrian crossing here and fears that an accident here is only a matter of time. “This was pointed out to me by a resident who witnessed tourists trying to get to the Travelodge after alighting the bus from the airport. She explained that they were utterly confused that there was no crossing point and they literally took their lives in their hands crossing the road.” He said, “I’m committed to making sure that the local authority are held to account for what I deem to be safety issues, caused by bad planning, which seems to be endemic in Swords. I’m not willing to stand idly by and I’m calling on residents of Swords to make their voices heard and get the

Mammoth Cycling Expedition By Balbriggan Twins Cycling twins from Balbriggan have pedalled their way across France and Spain to raise cash for the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (ISPCC). Twins, Gareth and David Dargle from Balbriggan and members of Stamullen M Donnelly Road Club, earlier this year hatched a plan to raise funds for the ISPCC. After much map-planning and paperwork, they packed their bags, collected their bikes and set out for the Rosslare to Roscoff ferry. On

arrival in France they set out on the first leg of a mammoth 1,500km cycle across France and on into Spain. This mammoth cycle, which was undertaken by these two courageous young men was carried out over a nine day cycle and they chose a very tough and arduous route, taking in many of the Tour de France climbs and overnight stage stops. They travelled down to Fourges, La Rochelle, Pau, Lourdes, Bagneres Du Lucon, over to Andorra, into Spain and on to their

intended destination, Barcelona. After enduring the weather of every season in the nine days, they arrived into Barcelona at the end of September feeling very tired, sore, exhausted but elated. Much to their surprise and delight they were met by their respective wives who, unknown to them, had taken a flight to meet up with the cycling duo at the finish line. Between them they have raised a very substantial amount of money through My Charity.ie and the amount raised is being doubled by NIB, by prior agreement.

ingal Dublin Chamber held a Corporate Network evening in partnership with McAllister Volkswagen at the latter’s Airside Motor Park on Thursday last, 1st November. A large group of business people from all over the North County and beyond were present to hear guest speaker, Joe Schmidt give a motivational speech. New Zealander Schmidt, who is the Head Coach of Leinster Rugby, led the province to the last two Heineken Cups, was in great demand by all. He spoke about the success story that is Leinster Rugby and how he dealt with controlling and motivating players to bring the best out in them. He spoke about the parallels between coaching professional athletes and how business people motivate their staff. One of his secrets is to have trust in new players and allow their confidence to blossom. The same applies in business and he urged people to have trust in their staff. Teamwork is the same for both business and sport and it is the only way to ensure success. He invited questions from the floor and he also spoke about how he came to coach Leinster. He originally came to coach in France, but an opportunity arose in Leinster, when Michael Cheka, his predecessor vacated his post. His inspirational speech was very well received and his gentle tones left a lasting impression on all there.

Anger At Vandalism Of Ridgewood Dressing Rooms By Patrick Finnegan The new pitches and dressing rooms at Ridgewood, Swords have become the target for vandals in the last few weeks. Windows were smashed and some external pipes damaged. The pitches, which are still in the ownership of the County Council are due to be handed over to St Finian’s GAA Club and River Valley Rangers FC shortly. Both St Finian’s GAA Club and River Valley Rangers have been providing a tremendous service to the people of River Valley and surrounds for many years. They have toiled with limited playing facilities for many years, and now that they are provided with such excellent facilities, which they richly deserve, some mindless thugs, with nothing better to do, decide to attempt to ruin things for everybody. This is a major blow to the clubs and Frank Egan, secretary of St Finian’s told the County Leader, “We are very disappointed that the dressing rooms and pitches have been subjected to such vandalism, particularly having waited so long for them,” he said. It is clear that wheelie bins have been taken here, some filled with rubbish and they have been set on fire on the pitches. The vandals use the bins to transport their rubbish to set on fire. There are remnants of parties, like broken bottles and cans littered over the pitches. “This is a real health hazard to players, as glass can be hidden on the pitches,” said Egan. Windows have been broken in the dressing rooms and the Council have boarded some of them up, but since then, more windows have been broken. The County Council informed the County

07

Leader that they have arranged for repairs, and for the windows to be fitted with grills to prevent future occurances of criminal damage. Cllr Darragh Butler (FF) is outraged at the level of vandalism. He told the County Leader, “These thugs are ruining these facilities, which, in all likelihood are being used by their younger brothers and sisters, who play for the teams here. This vandalism has to be cut out forever. They’re wrecking it for everyone. It’s so frustrating, as it took so long to get this great amenity,” he said.

Secretary of St Finian's GAA Club, Frank Egan is pictured outside the vandalised new dressing rooms at Ridgewood, Swords

With regard to allocation of these facilities to local clubs, the Council also said: “We are progressing some minor outstanding items with the changing rooms prior to allocating them to the clubs, and with the upcoming winter break, we anticipate the clubs will be using the facilities in the New Year when they return from the break.”

Support The Christmas Shoebox Appeal Team Hope is calling on schools, families, parishes, communities and businesses from around the North County to participate in the 2012 Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal. Team Hope is aiming to deliver 195,000 shoeboxes from Ireland into the hands of needy children in Africa, the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, whose families typically live on less than €1 per day. For many, it is the only Christmas present they will receive. The closing date for receipt of

Shoeboxes is 12th November. Niall Barry, Team Hope Executive Director, explains how easy it is to help: “Simply root out a spare shoebox, wrap with Christmas paper and fill with gifts for a child to write (items for school), wash (small hygiene items), wear (small clothing items) or wow (a treat) and attach €4 to cover transport costs. Close the box with an elastic band but

don’t seal it with tape as each box is carefully checked for customs and safety requirements by Team Hope staff and volunteers.” In the receiving country the Team Hope network of partners deliver the shoebox gift right into a child’s hands – in hospitals, schools, shelters, churches, orphanages, community centres or family homes. Schools, communities and organisations can bring their shoeboxes to drop-off points in Balbriggan, Lusk, Swords and Malahide.

However, Gardai cannot always be present and their efforts do not represent a long term solution to the problem. School authorities have requested that parents do not park directly outside the buildings, to park further down the road or to walk, where possible. The existing

Speaking to the County Leader, Councillor Gerry McGuire (Lab) advised he would like an alternative plan to be put in place, “I am suggesting to the County Manager to review the traffic control measures at the schools, with a view to address what can be done to improve safety measures at the location.”

Playgrounds Needed For Swords Estates Local residents are supporting plans for new playgrounds to be located at Swords Manor Estate and at Applewood. This issue has been a longstanding one in the local community over the last number of years. The ‘Swords Needs Playgrounds’ group held a meeting earlier this year, attended by local councillors, in which there was a huge push for playgrounds to be built. The County Council have understood the need for the facility, and after the September Committee meeting, put

By Celine Quinn out plans for the playgrounds. A playground was formerly located between Swords Manor and River Valley which

Cllr. Darragh Butler

no longer exists. This playground is sorely missed by locals.

Residents at both Swords Manor and Applewood estates are extremely unhappy with the lack of amentities for children in the community. Inadequate designated playing areas for children means that they are forced to play on the street, closer to traffic dangers. The safety of their children is an unending worry for local parents. The Council have indicated that the much needed playgrounds will be located on a site at Swords Manor Estate and Applewood. Since

Cause For Concern At Donabate Station The location of the new ticket machines installed at Donabate Railway Station are proving to be a danger for local residents. In the recent eight months since the machines were put in place, a number of young people have reported assaults while trying to purchase tickets. The machines are described as

the planning permission notice was erected, local councillors have been inundated with numerous supporting emails and phone calls from Swords residents. At this stage, with the full backing of local councillors and residents, any delay in providing the playgrounds is understood to be an issue of finance. Speaking to the County Leader, Cllr Darragh Butler (FF), said “The County Council are working to have the planning stage completed, so that when funding becomes available, the project can go ahead straightaway. There is no time frame as yet for when funding will be available.”

to the County Leader, Councillor Gerry Maguire (Lab) has advised “The ticket dispensing machines are stationed in a small cove, near the car park, which is not in the path or observance of the passing public. I have myself received two reports of young people being attacked while using the facility. The ticket machines are needed, but I believe they could be located in a more accessible area with better lighting.”

Street on a public consultation led design strategy to improve the appearance of this historic street in the heart of Balbriggan Town Centre. The event entitled, “Railway Street - a New Beginning” is for the whole community to attend. An Arts and Craft Market with a Christmas theme will take place on Sunday, 25th November from 12 noon to 6pm. In addition to the market, there will be musical and street entertainment for the whole community to enjoy. DAA Cyclists Present Cheque To Barretstown

Baldoyle’s Emma Is Top Trainee A local hairdresser from Baldoyle has been crowned ‘Trainee of the Year’ at the 10th Annual Schwarzkopf Professional Irish Hairdressing Business Awards which took place in the Mansion House, on Monday, 22nd October last. Emma Doran, who works in Davey Davey Hair Salon in the city, won the regional title of Dublin Trainee of the Year, followed by the overall title of National Trainee of the Year. She was recognised for her talent and potential as a trainee hairdresser at the salon. Emma told the County Leader, “I felt shocked when I won because I wasn’t expecting it at all. I was happy to be a finalist, but to win Dublin Trainee and then overall Trainee of the Year is just something else. I’d like to thank Schwarzkopf and the judges, and of course, the team and management at Davey Davey for their support also.” The Awards recognise exceptional business acumen and the most talented and committed salons in the Irish hairdressing industry.

Pictured is Emma Doran from Baldoyle, who won the Hairdressing Trainee of the Year award recently.

“The motivation and passion of my colleagues to innovatively and continuously raise funds for the DAA charity of the year is truly astounding. This is the largest sum raised by a single charity event this year and I am truly proud of all my colleagues for their trojan efforts,” said Siobhan. The annual charity cycle is just one of many events taking place during 2012 to raise much needed funds for Barretstown.

DAA cyclists have presented a hefty cheque for more than €14,000 to the DAA staff charity of the year, Barretstown. The cheque represents the funds raised at the Dublin Airport 50k/100k Challenge that took place in September. Over 90 Dublin Airport staff took part in a round trip to Barretstown and back on September 15th to raise funds for the Co Kildare centre. Tidy Towns and Green Party member, Zoe Nelson, has some good news for the residents of Balbriggan. After a lengthy battle with the County Council, Zoe Nelson was happy to inform the County Leader that Zoe Nelson new bins would be placed on Balbriggan Beach. “For the past three years, the council issued a number of excuses as to why they would not help Balbriggan keep its finest amenity litter free,” she said. “The disgraceful lack of bins had lead to systematic

was told that Balbriggan beach would receive three new bins. I was delighted with the news. ” She said this decision was welcomed by all the community groups and local Councillors in the area, who had been working equally hard to get the issue resolved. “Groups such as Balbriggan Tidy Towns, the Chamber of Commerce, the Balbriggan Police Forum and public representative such as local TD Brendan Ryan (Lab), all wanted this sorted out,” she continued. Some plan to have their ashes to be scattered on a remote beach when they pass on, however Zoe has another idea in mind: “If, at the end of the day, my ashes were placed in a bin on Balbriggan beach and removed by the County Council, that would make me strangely happy!”

around Ireland in areas of retail, safety, facilities and family friendliness. While Swords performed hugely successfully in the survey, Cllr. Kelleher argues that though we recognise and celebrate the achievement, more must be done going forward. He is calling for a “concentrated effort by the relevant sections of The County Council to revitalise the centre of Swords to facilitate the growth of business, tourism and improved access and parking for the public”. In addition, increased engagement with community groups in the Swords community is seen as crucial to improving the town’s position in the future.

Mail bag snake scares postal workers Clerks at a post office in South Africa fled for safety when they emptied a mail bag and a snake came slithering out. The one metre non-venomous white python was one of four sent this week in an express parcel that arrived at the Sabie Post Office, northeast of Johannesburg. Sabie branch manager Mthobisi Duba said the sorting room employees were out of the door as soon as the snake hit the floor. "This was the most traumatic experience ever in the post office," Duba said in a statement.

School children of Balbriggan have been invited to get involved in the County Council’s Schools Boxing Programme. The initiative, which is coordinated by Fingal’s Sports Office, supported by the Irish Sports Council and linked in with Bracken Boxing Club, aims to introduce third to sixth class pupils to the sport through noncontact, skills based fun activities. Fully qualified IABA coaches from both clubs will complete the six-week introduction to boxing programme in local schools, which will be followed by a presentation night in the respective clubs. This will give both students and their parents a chance to see what goes on inside a boxing club and meet all the coaches. Speaking to the County Leader, Niall McGuirk, Senior Sports Development Officer, said: “We’re delighted to have boxing taking place in local primary schools. It’s a fantastic opportunity for kids to try out the sport. The programme has been a major factor in the introduction of female boxers to Bracken Boxing Club for the very first time in their history, and with the success of Katie Taylor and Irish male boxers in the London Olympics, I can only see numbers increasing.”

Swords National Schools Need Playing Fields

North County Living by Jennifer McShane

By Celine Quinn Both Gaelscoil Brian Boroimhe and Swords Educate Together are in crucial need of playing fields for their students. The fields between Bunbury and the two schools is currently unused and has deteriorated. Cllr Darragh Butler (FF) is advocating for top soil to be added to these fields so they can be put to good use as pitches for the schools. However, the land in

question has been identified as an old burial site that cannot be built upon. Speaking to the County Leader, Cllr Butler argues “The County Council could put top soil on the ground purely so it can be used by the schools. In this way, the land would not be actually built upon, and the respect for the land will remain unchanged.” As it is, students from the Swords Educate Together are transported to St. Colmcille’s NS to use pitches there for sports activities. Use of the field adjacent to the two schools at Bunbury would be a practical solution to this problem,” he said

A Man About Town Des Becton has always had a special fondness for North County Dublin, and Swords in particular. He has been living in Swords for the past 38 years and in that time, has been involved in all aspects of community life. In continuation of our Tidy Towns series, Chairman of Swords Tidy Towns, Des Becton sat down to tell us a little more about himself, his work with the local group and why he is proud to call Swords his home. Des is originally from Drimnagh and arrived in Swords in 1974, where he has remained ever since. He says the decision to move to the now thriving town, came originally from his wife, Goretti who had a special preference for the area. It’s a decision, he says that he is glad they made. “We looked at a lot of different places like Malahide, but Swords was the place for us,” he said. “We chose it specifically because we liked the area and I loved the heritage aspect of the town. It took us a while to adjust, but we settled in very quickly.” Swords is rich in heritage and even in his early days as a resident, Des says he wanted to learn more about this. “I was always curious about the historical side of things; I liked the Round Tower, for example and was eager to learn more about it. They had just started work on the castle too. ” Speaking about his role in the community, he decided to become involved in one of the first Residents’ Associations in the area (he was both Treasurer and Chairman at different times) after locals started to run into issues around their estates. “The community was very close knit; everyone was growing up together and worked closely to get things done.” It was around this time, that he also became involved with the community council. “The Residents Association and the Community Council worked together, so it was natural to work with both groups.” Des was then able to combine his love of sports with his community activism. “I have always loved sports as a child and was in my element when I worked with the kids from the different teams, such as the rugby leagues and athletics around the town. I was heavily involved with the Community Games Association for years and the best thing I got out of it all, was watching the children succeed and achieve their goals.” His work with the local Tidy Towns group started around this time and he says even at that point, the group played a vital role around

the town. “There was, and still is today, a great amount of fundraising happening. The group’s founding members, Shane Redmond, Gemma Brosnan and the late Margaret Thorpe convinced me to join and I’ve stayed with the group, give or take a couple of years, ever since!” He says all the praise given to the Tidy Towns group is well deserved and well earned. “The amount of work that goes on is amazing. You’ll still see some of our oldest members out today, giving all the others a run for their money! Everyone does a fantastic job and we improve our score every year, thanks to their efforts.” The Swords man has devoted a huge portion of his life to volunteerism and working tirelessly for the betterment of the community, all of which he remains very modest about. “Growing up, I was a member of a fantastic youth club and became a youth leader as well. I always loved being involved in community life and wanted to continue this as I grew up, so it’s just something that I’ve always been happy to be a part of. I never saw it as work.” He was especially keen to pass this set of values onto his own children and wanted to give them the same happy experiences he had growing up: “I wanted the kids to have the same facilities I had; great youth and sports clubs and a sense of community. I knew that with an added bit of work, we would have all this for them in Swords. I’ve always thought that the town was a smashing place to bring up children. There is the great sense of community for starters, it’s very family orientated and the schools are excellent, so all the facilities are there for them. Myself and my wife brought up our own three here and they love the place.” They have spent many enjoyable years bringing up their daughters, Ciara and Asling and youngest son Shane. “Ciara now lives in Switzerland with her husband and Asling lives here. The majority of my free time is taken up with the family and visiting my granddaughter, Emily.” Speaking about his plans for the future, he says he will continue his community work and hopes to go travelling. “My wife and I have always loved travelling and we hope to do more of this. We would love to visit China, so that’s a big goal.” He says he doesn’t see himself living anywhere else. “from the time we arrived, we never could. We’ll definitely be here for a few more years at least!”

“The amount of work that goes on is amazing. You’ll still see some of our oldest members out today, giving all the others a run for their money!”

Commenting on this year’s competition, Engineers Ireland Director General and Chartered Engineer, John Power commended on the quality and quantity of entries. “The Portrane/Donabate/Rush/Lusk Waste Water Treatment Plant is a prime example of the positive role engineering plays in the local community. I wish them the best of luck in the competition and I call on the Dublin community to support their engineering project of the year by voting online.” The winner of this year’s awards will be announced on 9th November at the Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards in The Four Seasons Hotel in Dublin

By Celine Quinn devices are often used by charitable organisations in an effort to control the feral cat population. Feral cats are then neutered and returned to the wild. However, these operations should take place under strict supervision, which would not allow for this unfortunate incident to occur. It appears Sonny was lured into the cage by a tin of sardines, and was subsequently left there to starve. Sonny sustained injuries to the nose from his escape attempts. Worringly, Fingal County Council have confirmed that they have not authorised the use of the trap in which Sunny was found. The incident has been reported to An Garda Siochana in Swords. Animal owners are urged to be viligant, particularly at bonfire time of year. Speaking to the County Leader, owner DerryAnn said, “I am very grateful to have him home. He is recovering well after his dreadful ordeal. I would like to take this opportunity to say a genuine thank you to everyone who helped return Sonny home safely.” Sonny has been happily reunited with his fellow feline, Cher.

Malahide Businesses Request Free Parking Independent local retailers and outlets in Malahide are requesting a daily three-hour free parking time slot in the village to increase consumer activity and aid local business. It is believed that free parking facilities would stimulate business in the area. Better parking facilities is seen as central in attracting more footfall to Malahide Village, and allow customers more time to browse at their leisure.

By Celine Quinn Local traders in Malahide are struggling in the harsh, economic climate. Many shop owners are struggling to keep their heads above water. As such, more accessible parking would prevent losses to competitor areas offering free parking. It would also take the pressure away from timeconscious customers, who are ‘on the meter’, to shop or dine more easily. Speaking to the County Leader, Patricia Murtagh, Chairperson of Malahide Chamber of Commerce, said “The fact is that since free parking was made available to Malahide Castle and Avoca, it is pulling footfall away from the village to the castle. Proximity of parking is a huge factor for commercial activity. I have received a large amount of contact with relation to the difficulty and the expense of parking in

Malahide. The local businesses have formed an action group to deal with the the problems surrounding parking. We have identified it as the number one issue to local trade, we wish to make Malahide more accessible to the public, to enjoy what we have to offer here.” On consultation with Malahide Chamber of Commerce, Cllr Eoghan O’Brien (FF) will put forward a motion at the Committee Meeting on Wednesday 7th November. O’Brien will ask the County Manager to report on the possibility of a daily three hour free parking slot in the village. Speaking to the County Leader, Cllr O’Brien advised, “Local trade is at a disadvantage due to paid parking for customers. The County Council need to ensure local businesses can function and continue to remain viable. It is in the financial interest of both groups.”

A West Sussex man has told how a fox stole his wife's handbag and then brought it back. Jeremy Clark, from Brighton, said, “We were in the car park and he looked at me. Next thing I knew he had my wife's handbag in his mouth and was running towards the bushes. Anna had everything in there: her phone, money, purse, keys and letters. I couldn't believe the fox had just taken it". But a few minutes later the fox crept back, with his tail between his legs, and dropped the bag at Mrs Clark's feet before running off.

Seabury Road Ramps Still In Disrepair By Celine Quinn Residents of Seabury Road, Malahide, remain unsatisfied in their request to fix deteriorated road ramps in the area. The issue of the ramps, which are in a very poor state of repair, has existed for a number of years. The cobblelock-effect ramps, installed by the County Council, are notoriously inefficient and have degraded considerably all around the North County. These cobblelockeffect road bumps were largely replaced, with tarmacadam, in the

Malahide area and beyond approximately 18 months ago. However, Seabury Road itself still retains these hazardous ramps. Speaking to the County Leader, Cllr Eoghan O’Brien (FF), said “The ramps on Seabury Road have yet to be replaced, even though ramps were replaced just 150m away. I cannot see the reason for this oversight, other than the issue just fell through the cracks.” Deteriorated ramps have the potential to cause damages to vehicles, such as punctures in particular. Parts of the Seabury Road ramps are already breaking off, exposing concrete underneath. O’Brien will bring forward the question to the Committee Meeting with the County Council on Wednesday, November 7th.

Balbriggan Halloween Tricksters Give Charity A Treat Healthy Halloween heroes in Balbriggan raised €400 for Cystic Fibrosis with a spooktacular fancy dress fat loss boot camp. The lads, dressed in army gear from ProFitness Gym Balbriggan, trained 35 people at Balbriggan Community Centre during a special edition fancy dress boot camp and, as this was a free service, donations were made by everyone to Cystic Fibrosis. Coowner of the gym, John Carroll, said. “We had everyone during

the one hour boot camp doing Trx, weight training, push ups, swings, burpees etc and ended the session with fun themed sprints.” Caroline Harnett, on behalf of Cystic Fibrosis said; “It was a brilliant night and a great idea by the lads that attracted loads of attention and raised vital money for this terrible disease.” Co-owner, Adrian Harper, added, ‘The ‘fancy dress’ boot camp has been a great success and we are delighted to have supported Cystic Fibrosis. I shall be delivering more special edition sessions in the coming months, including the new ‘Reindeer’ camp in December and the ‘Great Selection Box Amnesty’ in the first week of January.”

Rush resident, Eugene Leddy recently left his job as manager in Bank of Ireland to take up a position in 'Fierce Tribe', a company set up by his son, Patrick. To celebrate the occasion, a house party was held at Eugene's home. Pictured are Eugene (2nd from right) with his son Patrick, wife Siobhan and daughter Jennifer.

Upskill With Local Training Course

ProFitness Gym, Balbriggan owners, Adrian Harper and John Carroll are pictured handing over the €400 to Caroline Harnett from Cystic Fibrosis, with Mark Joyce and John Cullen (baby suit). It was all part of a spooktacular fancy dress fat loss boot camp for Cystic Fibrosis.

Home-Start Seeks Local Volunteers Home-Start is an organisation which trains and supports volunteers to help young families who are experiencing a difficult time, is now seeking volunteers in the North County. A Home-Start volunteer should have parenting or relevant professional experience and demonstrate a sensitive and caring attitude towards others. It is important attribute to have a warm and open personality along with a good sense of humour.

A preparation course is run over eight weeks, one morning a week. If you’re interested, call Valerie on 085 7599430. Volunteers are also required to complete Garda vetting. Volunteers will be requested to provide support for up to 3 hours a week and expenses will be covered.

‘Try Anything Twice’ in Donabate Donabate Portrane Dramatic Society’s next production “Try Anything Twice!” runs from 15th to 18th November at 8pm at Donabate Community College. Following it’s sell-out 9-night run in April in Chicago, William Rocke’s hilarious, laugh-a-line comedy “Try Anything Twice!” is being directed for Donabate by Phil Monaghan. Noelle Corcoran plays Josephine, easy winner of the Sunnyside Holiday Camp Glamorous Grandmother Contest. Her prize is a week of nights on the town with suave, handsome, womanising TV actor,

Clive Cartwright (Aengus Gordon), who’s a big hit with her snobbish daughter (Ellen Gorman), her flighty mother (Liz Walsh) and Charley, the mischievous next door neighbour from hell (Alan Fleming), but not with her gone-to-seed husband Michael (Brian O’Hanlon/Phil Monaghan). Chaos sets in when alluring and all-tooeager journalist Paula (Lorraine Halpin) arrives to interview the lonely Michael. Try Anything Twice! has been translated into Flemish to be staged next year in Antwerp, and has also been staged by many theatre groups in Ireland, Canada and the UK. Admission is €10, senior citizens and students are €5.

Lack Of Carbon Monoxide Awareness In Local Homes As temperatures begin to drop, the Oil Firing Technical Association (OFTEC), which represents the domestic oil heating and cooking industry in Ireland, has thrown its weight behind Carbon Monoxide (CO) Awareness. The organisation warned that many householders in the North County are still unaware of the risks of this potentially deadly substance when it comes to oil burning appliances. David Blevings, Ireland Manager of OFTEC, told the County Leader:

“Carbon monoxide is traditionally associated with gas appliances. We are concerned that the message isn’t getting through to local householders using oil and other fuels.” “Feedback from our technicians would suggest that North County householders believe the risks only apply to gas. This is a key reason why this year’s campaign highlights that anyone who uses an appliance that burns any fossil fuel, whether it is oil, coal, peat, wood or gas should take appropriate action.” “We fully support the Carbon Monoxide Awareness campaign and the key message is that all fossil fuel burning appliances should be serviced annually,” he concluded.

Locals Warned Against Cyber Bullying By Celine Quinn The Irish Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Children (ISPCC) is urging young people in the North County to seek help if they are being bullied online. In light of the recent tragic case of 13 year old Donegal girl, Erin Gallagher, local residents are being advised to be extremely vigilant against these activities. This apparent suicide is the second such case in Ireland which has been

21

linked to cyber bullying. Young people and parents are being asked to speak out, whether bullying is taking place online, in school or in the community. Cyber bullying is a distinctive activity. Such bullying doesn’t ‘end’ with the school day. It can be a 24 hour barrage of insults, threats or innuendo. The online nature means bullying can largely go unnoticed by adults, and can mean there is no let up from abuse or harassment. The emotional and physical effects of cyber bullying can be catastrophic. It can have lasting damages to self-esteem and mental health. Parents in the North County are urged to speak to their children today about their experiences online and to make this a regular part of conversation at home. Good advice for parents is to keep the computer in a communal room, and to browse the web often with your children. It is of utmost importance that young people are made aware of the risks of online communication, and the dangers of exposing personal information.

Swords Potholes In Need Of Repair Swords residents are becoming increasingly distressed with relation to potholes on Forster Way. The massive potholes remain in disrepair despite numerous requests by local residents to correct the damages. Speaking to the County Leader, Cllr Darragh Butler (FF) is asking for

By Celine Quinn immediate action to taken, “At this stage, the issue is unfortunately beyond a joke. The potholes are now the size of craters. A number of councillors have drawn attention to the problem. We need to see an end to it.” Forster Way runs parallel to Swords

Main Street and is often used for overflow parking from the Main Street. However, motorists are avoiding the road due to its deteriorating condition. In effect, this means the street is not serving its purpose - it is increasing congestion on Swords Main Street rather than alleviating it.
