New Bishop’s Curate In Balbriggan By Peter Kearney The United Dioceses of Dublin and Glendalough introduced Reverend Anthony Kelly as Bishop’s Curate of Holmpatrick and Kenure with Balbriggan and Balrothery. The ceremony was held at St. George’s Church Balbriggan, on St. Brigid’s Day Wednesday 1st February last. A native of Clontarf, Reverend Anthony Kelly spent last summer in the Clonenagh group of Parishes in Co. Laois prior to beginning this new role in the North County. He also spent time training in Africa for the position. It is a very important role with a wide geographical area to cover. He said he is “looking forward to the challenge”.
SWORDS:
Pictured here with Trever Sergent is Reverend Anthony Kelly who was newly appointed as Bishop’s Curate of Holmpatrick and Kenure with Balbriggan and Balrothery.
Among those present was former elected representative for Dublin North, Trevor Sargent. Trevor was there in his capacity as People’s Church Warden for the church of St. George. A large crowd, in excess of 220, also attended the ceremony and to wish the new curate well. The main churches in
the North County were represented as were many local elected dignitaries and business people also attended. It was a cross community event in St. George’s Church as was the reception in the Sunshine House afterwards. Full credit to all involved in organising the evening and in welcoming the new curate to the North County. We all look forward to meeting him.
On Monday, 13th February, the 2011 Dublin Rose of Tralee Escort, Darragh McGrath from Malahide will travel to Belarus to volunteer in the Adi Roche aided Vesnova Children’s Mental Asylum. Darragh will be accompanied by Tara Talbot, the 2011 Rose of Tralee and 12 other Roses and Escorts from last year’s Rose of Tralee International Festival. The Chernobyl Children International (CCI), brings aid and medical assistance to hundreds of children in Belarus that were affected by the Nuclear Tragedy in Chernobyl 25 years ago. Darragh told the County Leader: “I’m really looking forward to the trip. Through the Rose of Tralee festival, I’ve made great friends and it’s not everyday a group of friends get the opportunity to go to Chernobyl together. I’m looking forward to giving these kids some friendship and help them enjoy the precious one to one human contact that they are so deprived of.” Adi Roche, CEO, CCI will accompany the Roses and Escorts on the trip, “The group of Roses and Escorts travelling to Chernobyl are an inspirational group of young people. Through their generosity, many children will benefit. Chernobyl has not gone away and its enduring legacy is that almost 2 million children and adults continue to live in a contaminated and forgotten land. Please remember them by supporting the Roses and Escorts at their events.’’ The Roses and Escorts will make the long journey out on Monday, 13th February and will return five days later. While there, they will attend the official opening of a new home built by Irish Volunteers for older girls. The group have been busy fundraising for the trip with many events held in each of the participating countries. They hope to raise over €20,000 which will go directly to assist the children.

Plans for the Liam Rodgers Centre – named after a late local resident who spent years campaigning for the facility – have been put on display by the County Council and work is expected to begin on the project in the autumn. Located to the rear of the new Scoil an Duinninigh building on Feltrim Road, the centre will be built beside the Swords Baptist Church complex, which is currently under construction. A multipurpose sports hall is planned, containing four badminton courts and a basketball court, changing rooms, showers, an umpire room, meeting rooms, toilets, a reception desk and more are also planned across two floors, with an outdoor football pitch earmarked on a site alongside the building. The plans are currently on public display at the County Hall and River Valley Community Centre and submissions were taken from residents up until last week. Red Kites Must Be Protected
HOROSCOPES AQUARIUS
Jan 20 - Feb 18
Keep in mind that this week’s developments are only the beginning of a cycle of change, and you’ll feel less impatient. Instead, you’ll allow others to consider their options while you think about your own future.
PISCES
Feb 19 - Mar 20
A week to tackle awkward issues. In some cases, you’ve already raised these, in others guilt or worry have prevented you from acting. Now you can address them, but circumstances are likely to acquire a tough stance.
ARIES The discovery of a ninth dead red kite from illegal poisoning in Co Wicklow recently, has caused anxiety in the North County that the recently released kites may be in danger of being poisoned. The breeding female bird, which had been nesting on a farm near Redcross, Co Wicklow, was found near Brittas Bay recently. Dr Marc Ruddock, Red Kite project manager, told the County Leader that it was “a demoralising loss.” He explained: “These birds are specialist scavengers, that’s why they are finding these food sources which are sadly poisoned. They are designed to clean up the countryside. These illegal actions jeopardise local biodiversity.” Dr Ruddock called for anyone with information on poisonings to contact local National Parks and Wildlife Service rangers and gardaí to help identify and confront individuals repeatedly and illegally poisoning wildlife. Penalties for illegally poisoning birds of prey can be up to €5,000 or 12 years in prison. Meanwhile, in the Lusk area, the National Parks and Wildlife Services is dealing with a spate of secondary poisonings of red kites caused by the legal control or rats and mice with chemical poison. Seven birds have already died after eating legally poisoned rodents.
Pop Up Museum In Balbriggan On Thursday, 9th February in the Bracken Court Hotel, there will be a unique pop up museum on display in Balbriggan. For the first time, a window on the past will open, with a display of cannon balls, fishing nets, whale bones and artefacts found by trawlers from Balbriggan in their nets down the years. This display is free for the public to visit. This pop-up museum also marks the 250th anniversary of work commencing on Balbriggan Harbour in the spring of 1762, under the instruction of Baron George Hamilton.
The museum will be visited by all the schools in the area as well as the Minister of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Mr. Jimmy Deenihan TD, who will be welcomed by Balbriggan Town Council Cathaoirleach, Cllr. Gráinne Maguire. Later on that day, a meeting of elected and community representatives, including Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce will gather at the Museum to see what needs to be done so that Balbriggan can develop a more permanent Maritime Museum. While this week’s dramas stimulate your courageous streak, others are rattled by sudden changes in arrangements involving business. You will have to deal with swift changes, while soothing numerous upsets.
TAURUS
Apr 21 - May 20
There’s little you can do to halt the quibbles over finances or decision-making triggered this week. What you can do, however, is to take advantage of the resulting forthright mood to address these - and other issues.
Gemini
May 21 - Jun 20
Until you examine the facts in the cold light of day, it is only then that you accept that you can’t do everything this week, and focus on the relevant and important activities - and leave for another day all the remaining ones.
Cancer
Jun 21 - Jul 22
While you can’t entirely avoid the bickering over issues that really aren’t your responsibility, as indicated by adverse planetary activity this week, you can state your positions clearly - and leave others to it.
Leo
Jul 23 - Aug 23
Your instinct this week is to fight all changes. However, you’ll soon realise that behind even ham-fisted offers lie opportunities to end one long and troublesome cycle and begin a far easier one - whatever about the changes.
Virgo

Only you are easily able to untangle the morass of misunderatandings indicated by adverse planetary activity. Your duty will be to guide others gently into facing facts about the issues in question - and deal with them.
Libra

Scorpio
Oct 23 - Nov 22
The trick to dealing with the numerous conflicts during the week is to assess the issues in question carefully before becoming involved. You will find that in many cases, things can - and should - be left to others.
Sagittarius
Nov 23 - Dec 21
When you look back on this week, you’ll recognise it as a time of new beginnings. But while you’re dealing with the changes - many of which will be out of your hands, things may not look quite so rosy.
Capricorn
Dec 22 - Jan 19
Recently you’ve been examining elements of your life, focusing not on the practicalities that are usually on your mind, but on creative and emotionally rewarding activities. If confused? Now all will become clear.

The senator and successful businessman was invited to the school on behalf of the fifth years by Mr. Ciaran Fogerty. Approximately 90 per cent of Leaving Certificate students in the school study either Accounting, Economics or Business for their terminal exam. Communions 2012 As Spring is in the air, we are approaching the time of Communions and Confirmations. These are key stages in your child’s life, both spiritually and otherwise as they go a step further into their adult life. The day is a very special one for children and families alike
as they come together to celebrate this eventful day.
Stylish Outfits The attire for the day will be very important. The outfits will of course vary depending on whether
your son or daughter are making their communion or confirmations. On the big day when children first partake in the communion ritual, boys are usually outfitted in specific suits , while the girls are dressed in white satin or lace dresses, along with various fancy

accessories such as a white veil or other headdress pieces. The Confirmation outfits are slightly more relaxed but have to be special regardless. The boys might again wear a nice suit and the girls opt for a specific type of dress and so on. There an array of specialised shops around the North County that will stock all these special clothes. Make sure to try and get organised as early as possible so as to get the outfit you want for the day.
Catering For All The communion reception can be a simple family party or a lavish affair but it always centres on the person or child who has taken communion for the first time. It’s always a special occasion which brings the whole family
together for either a party or a special meal. A first communion party, should you decide to go for that option, may range anywhere from a casual family gettogether, to a lavish open house where loved ones and relatives, friends and neighbours drop by to congratulate the child. Your Confirmation party can be as fancy as you want. It can be held at a reception hall, complete with DJ and dancing - or as simple as a backyard barbecue. Tween and teen party themes are also very popular. Whether you decide to opt for a celebratory party or a special meal, many hotels and restaurants around the North County will offer special packages to ensure you get the best deal possible and that all your needs are taken care of on the big day.
Participants must be over 17 with no upper age limit and over 50s are especially welcome. To book a place on this exciting course or for further info call 074 9126994 or e-mail filmactorsworkshop@eircom.net. ‘Charley’s Aunt’ Flounces Into Skerries Skerries Theatre Group will put on a hilarious comedy called Charley’s Aunt, which will run in the Little Theatre, Skerries from 8th – 18th February (Wed to Sat) at 8pm. The play is set in Oxford in 1890. Two students, Charley and Jack, want to propose marriage to two lovely young women. success to the hotel’s Executive Head Chef, David Steele. David looked after the team requirements for many years at the hotel, and was then invited to travel with the senior squad to consult on catering facilities and nutritional matters. The hotel also boasts a great team of their own, which is it’s long serving team of loyal staff who have
looked after all the hotels’ regular guests over the years. Many have worked in the hotel for over a quarter of a decade and instantly recognise the return patrons. Great friendships and loyalty have resulted over the past 40 years, with many couples in the area getting married in the hotel and have since returned for their children’s chris-
tenings, communions and even 21st birthday parties. Lynn Cawley went on to explain how the hotel is currently in the process of organising a reunion for all couples who got married over the past 40 years in the hotel to meet up with the team members, who looked after them on their special day. Enter their rascally friend and fellow student, Fancourt, who just happens to be trying on an old lady’s costume for the ‘varsity play. They blackmail him into posing as Charley’s aunt. This ruse sets in motion a series of events that includes Fancourt being courted by both Spettigue and Jack’s father. And then, just when you thought things couldn’t get anymore complicated, Charley’s real aunt, Donna Lucia D’Alvadorez, shows up. Hilarity ensues. Tickets cost €12/€10 from Skerries Bookshop and the proceeds of the opening night’s performance will go to Holmpatrick School.

Eurosonic. The good times are set to continue for the local four-piece, as soon they’ll be hitting the road across the water, after announcing details of their debut UK tour, which started in London on 26th January last. Shows in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Leeds, Nottingham, Luton, B i r m i n g h a m , Manchester and Southampton will follow as part of a 13-date schedule, between now and March. Big things are expected for brothers Conor and Neil Adams, bassist John Higgins and drummer Kevin Curran, who have quickly become one of the country’s most hotly-tipped bands. They released their debut album ‘Chariot’ as a free online offering in 2010, which was downloaded more than 150,000 times, and relocated to London to finish the follow-up. “We’re really excited to be playing our first UK tour ever,” the band said.
Written by Willy Russell, the legendary BLOOD BROTHERS tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences. The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True with Maureen Nolan, of the world-renowned pop group ‘THE NOLAN SISTERS’ reprising her role as the tragic Mrs. Johnstone. Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi-award winning BLOOD BROTHERS, and Bill Kenwright’s production, having recently celebrated its 23rd phenomenal year in London, continues to enjoy standing ovations at every devastating performance. No wonder BLOOD BROTHERS is now ‘The musical for all time’.
