Swords Man To Represent Irish Credit Unions
County Leader
Darren O’Reilly from Swords has been selected by the Irish League of Credit Unions to represent them at a prestigious international event in Canada later in the year. Darren (22), who works for Swords Credit Union, has been selected, along with one other person, to participate in the World Council’s Young Credit Union People Programme (WYCUP) in Ottowa in July. This annual programme is designed to engage and promote the next generation of Credit Union professionals in the international Credit Union movement. In an exclusive interview with the County Leader, it was easy to see why Darren was selected to represent his country. He spoke about how this opportunity came about. “I have been involved with Swords Credit Union since I was 15 years old, when I set up a sub branch of the Credit Union at my school, Colaiste Choilm CBS. I established a school branch of the Credit Union, as part of a business studies project. I held the positions of chairperson, treasurer and secretary,” he said. All this work was about to reap rich dividends for him and a life changing decision was about to be made. “Around the time of my Leaving Certificate, I was approached by Swords Credit Union and they offered me a full-time position and a college scholarship.” Darren has since qualified as a Financial Advisor, which has allowed him to implement additional services, like Financial Health Check, a one to one session helping members budget and save. Darren has also qualified as an Accounts Technician and implemented a new accountancy package and operational procedures in the organisation. This has resulted in more accurate and timely information for management and has improved the daily operational efficiency of the front line staff He has since grown the School Saving Scheme initiative to 12 participating schools in the Swords area, encouraging children to develop a good saving habit and thereby sow the seeds of good financial management for the

future. He also runs the annual ILCU School Quiz and Poster competition at local level. As a qualified Accounts professional and financial advisor, he has played a pivotal part in bringing the Credit Union concept to a
younger audience through digital media marketing, engaging these audiences through social media and services such as online accounts access and smart phone apps, thus enhancing the appeal of the Credit Union. He said, “I established Swords Credit Union on Facebook and Twitter to engage with our younger audience. To increase traffic to these sites, I teamed up with local companies to run promotions, resulting in increased business for both parties. I also advised other Credit Unions about the use of social media marketing, as well as implementing a new mobile enabled website and suite of online services.” “I soon realised a passion for marketing and helped address our outdated image by producing a new suite of promotional material and developing a new members’ pack to give the company a new look, resulting in increased membership and use of services,” he said. At just 22 years of age, Darren feels that his contribution to engaging the youth through various initiatives and introducing new services to the Credit Union, will stand him in good stead in the competition. We have no doubt that he will do himself and his country proud in Canada.

Balbriggan Primary Care Centre Granted Full Planning Permission
An artist’s impression of the Primary Care Centre
The news that Balbriggan Primary Care Centre has been given the go-ahead has been given a broad welcome in the town. Full planning permission for the centre was granted on Friday last, thus removing the last obstacle to the provision of world class medical care for residents of Balbriggan and surrounding areas. In welcoming the news, local councillor Tom O’Leary (FG) told the County Leader, “I’m delighted for the people of Balbriggan, that after more than seven years, they will get the primary care centre and medical facility they deserve in a new 40,000 sq feet building beside the church. The local HSE facility on Hampton Street, which is almost derelict, will now move to the new Kevin Tolan centre. There are no more obstacles to be overcome. Local doctors are on record as saying that they approve of this town centre site because of it’s accessibility,” said a delighted O’Leary. This new centre was also welcomed by Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce. Speaking to the County Leader, Kevin Tolan said, “We’re delighted that planning permission has been granted. It’s a very welcome move forward, which will breathe new life Cllr. Tom O’Leary and vitality back into the heart of Balbriggan, as well as providing much needed employment for locals. This is a really positive move for the town,” he said. This primary care centre was steeped in controversy at the end of last year, when Minister for Health, Dr James Reilly was accused of including Balbriggan as well as Swords in the list of areas requiring primary care centres, simply because they were located in his constituency.

Lusk Prepares To Welcome Twin Town Visitors On Wednesday, May 8th, a delegation of some 33 people from the French town of ThorigneFouillard in Brittany will arrive in Lusk, ahead of the 20th anniversary celebrations, marking the twinning of both towns. Preparations are well underway for the visit, and the Lusk locals plan to give their French friends a very warm Irish welcome. The French guests will be kept extremely busy, but will no doubt thoroughly enjoy their eventful visit to Lusk and other areas around the North County and beyond. The highlight of the visit will be the signing of a Charter to commemorate 20 years of twinning between the towns, which will take place on Saturday, 11th May at 9pm in the old school, beside St Macullin’s Church. A New Beginning For Railway Street By Patrick Finnegan
North County Dublin’s N0.1 Quality Newspaper strategy for Railway Street. The recently opened Fumbally Exchange hosts new and exciting businesses, and the launch of this document is expected to provide a major boost for Railway Street and ultimately Balbriggan itself. Speaking on behalf of Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce at the launch, Kevin Tolan said, “This document is a culmination of months of research, meetings with residents, businesses and stakeholders, combined with the imaginative and creative input by the appointed consultants.”
On Monday, 29th April last, the much anticipated document on the future of Railway Street in Balbriggan was launched. The launch took place in the Brick Room, Railway Street and was attended by community leaders from the town, including Town councillors, County Councillors, as well as Balbriggan Town architect, Celine O’Rourke. This document is part of the Balbriggan Public Realm initiative and Railway Street is the first street in the town to be chosen for the implementation group to look at in detail. This is a community led design process, which is a relatively new concept. Speaking at the event, Cllr Gráinne Maguire was very excited about the launch of the Pictured are Balbriggan Town Architect, Celine document and thanked O'Rourke, with Cllr Tom O'Leary at the launch of the report on Railway Street at the Brick Room. the residents and businesses on the street for helping to “The Chamber would expect that a drive the project forward. percentage of the funds that are Representatives from Balbriggan generated in Balbriggan by business Chamber of Commerce, Balbriggan rates, pay parking charges and indeed Town Council, the County Council and the new household charge that is due the Heritage Council worked with the to commence in July this year, are residents, traders and stakeholders directly designated to enable Railway from the street on a public consultaStreet to be regenerated by carrying tion led design strategy to improve the out the proposals in this wonderful appearance of Railway Street. This had a strong impact on the boys. Luckily they were both unhurt, but obviously it was not a nice experience. “It got us thinking, if we could invent something to prevent that from happening, to save people’s lives, it could be a hit. And so far, it has been,” he concluded.

Balbriggan Students Put Their Energy To Good Use The ‘Tree of a Kind’ team from Balbriggan Loreto had much reason to celebrate as they were awarded Overall Winner of the SEAI “One Good Idea” project finals held in the Mansion House recently. Organised by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) and supported by the Better Energy programme and the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government, the aim of the project is to increase students’ understanding of energy efficiency and climate change. This is done by encouraging them to take individual and collective responsibility for tackling these important issues, as well as highlighting how one good idea can make a big difference to our pockets, ourselves and our planet. Transition year students Laura HennellyMcCarthy, Victoria Fitzsimons, Megan Freeman, Erika O’Neill, and Orla McMahon impressed the judges with their ‘Tree of Kind’ campaign, in which they designed a website and filled it with with resources such as videos, lesson plans, articles and news; everything a primary school teacher needs to formally incorporate climate change into lessons in their class. They also designed a leaflet, and 300 of these were posted to schools around the North County and beyond. As of last week, the site has had almost 3,000 unique visitors. This was a fantastic achievement for the girls as they knew nothing about the mechanics of building a website from scratch and completely taught themselves. Out of 250 project submitted, only 10 made it to the finals. This is the 5th year Loreto Balbriggan have reached the finals of this competition and their 3rd time as overall winners.

Potential Life Saving Scheme In Balrothery A new Community Cardiac Responders scheme is to to be set up in Balrothery. The setting up of the scheme was the idea of John McKenna, Emergency Blood Biker and local man from Balrothery. This is the reason John wanted a scheme to be set up in the Balrothery area. “Because of its geographical location, it can take at least 15 to 20 minutes for an ambulance to arrive
from Balbriggan, if there happens to be one available at all,” John told the County Leader. “The function of the community responder is to attend 999/112 emergency cardiac, stroke, and choking calls ahead of the ambulance. This means that for the individual involved, it gives them a better chance of survival until help arrives in the form of advanced life support and/or paramedics.” “My role as a scheme co-ordinator is to look after and train all the volunteers,” he continued. He says they need as many volunteers as possible and they need at least 40 (they currently have 28), to get the scheme up and running. “We do all the fundraising ourselves and greatly appreciate all the support we get.” The scheme is linked in with the Health Service Executive (HSE) National Ambulance Service, and responders when rostered on call will be contacted by ambulance control to attend a patient in advance of the ambulance arriving. Full Training will be provided up to the level of Community Cardiac Responder by the Order of Malta Ambulance Corps in Balbriggan and will be certified by PHECC, Pre-hospital Emergency Care Council. New Literacy Initiatives For Swords School The past Academic Year saw St. Finian’s Community College in Swords focus on literacy, with the launch of some new initiatives throughout the school. A paired reading programme was introduced this year by Liesl Atkins for the first and second year Junior Certificate Schools Programme. Fifth year students were paired with second years and sixth year students were paired with first years for one class a week to help them read. The programme ran
for ten weeks. The students were tested before and after the programme, there was a definite improvement in word recognition and spelling. Currently, a paired spelling programme is running. For a week in February the school held a ‘Drop Everything and Read’ week organised by the school’s Literacy Co-ordinator, Keith Young. Everyday during the week of the programme, the principal would announce at some stage throughout the days
to, “Drop everything and read for 20 minutes.” The aim of the week was to encourage students to read for pleasure. Then, on the 22nd of April, English Department Co-ordinator, Emma Carey organised a ‘Literacy Day.’ In preparation for the day, a list of common key words from all subject areas was compiled and distributed to first and second year English teachers in September. A quiz was held in the school’s assembly area, where students put their knowledge to the test. All students were given a certificate to mark their participation in the day.

A Local Talent Ronnie Delaney is a true native of Ballyboughal. He was born and reared in the town and though he moved to Swords briefly when he was a teenager, he says he never lost ties with the town. “All my family connections were in Ballyboughal so I moved back 21 years ago and have been there ever since.” Ronnie would be well known around Ballyboughal. He is the secretary of the local Pitch and Putt Club and is also Chairperson of the Fingal Folk Club among other things and is always doing something to keep himself busy. Community is very important to him and he says over the years, the close knit community has become even stronger. “There has been a change, but I think the closeness is still there. Some might say it has gone away, but it still exists in its own way, and myself and my family would certainly know almost everyone around. It’s just different. Locals get together in different ways now. ” The subsequent revival of the pitch and putt club in 2007 saw Ronnie get involved in a different aspect of community life. “When I got involved originally I had said I’d give a year (as you do), but ended up staying on. The club had stagnated a little and I think what they needed was someone with a certain skill set (good with computers etc) to bring the group forward into our digital times. I have a certain amount of those capabilities so I was able to help the group grow.” The club has since gone from strength to strength and since its 40th anniversary in 2010, the group had over 135 members, which was quite an achievement. Ronnie says he wanted to become involved in the group because he saw that it was needed within the community. “I was aware that the group needed a lift and I wanted to help out. It’s a great way to become involved with your community directly and it’s really sociable. We have a really diverse membership which is fantastic.” The club is open seven days a week and Ronnie encourages anyone who might be interested to come down with the family and join in the fun. "The club runs a beginners class on a Tuesday evening from May to June, so this is a great way to get started if anyone is thinking of becoming involved. " A big passion in Ronnie's life is music. He set up the now well known Fingal Folk Club and is also a member of his own group 'Morning Dew,' which he formed in 1979. "Music is in the blood, I come from a very musical family," he continued. "Myself and my uncle formed the group all those years ago and my dad also sits in with us at many of the gigs, so he's been very much a part of it as well." Ronnie says he got
the idea to start the Fingal Folk Club when the recession hit. "I would have known a lot of guys in many bands that suddenly weren't playing any gigs, once times got tougher because the pubs (which would have been were the majority of the bands played) were cutting back, so I suddenly got the idea and thought why don't I start a club where everyone can get together and play? I had the venue which was St. Patrick's Hall in Ballyboughal and I just thought if it was done the right way, it would really work." And work it did. Since it launched in 2010, the club has grown increasingly popular and is still going strong today. Ronnie says the club is composed of ex folk group members and anyone and everyone who has an interest in the music. The club runs twice a month and is running throughout the summer months this year. "The emphasis is all about showcasing local talent. We have some fantastic musicians, poets and performers and we wanted to give them a natural setting to play in. Members love the club for what that is. I saw that there was a gap there and the feedback has been fantastic so far." Ronnie who plays the guitar, keyboards and organ says his love for music stemmed from his family life and mentions a particular uncle, who was a gifted accordion player and played in a band. "My dad, V, is a fantastic singer as well. He would be well known for his singing and performing the more unusual stuff such as comedy songs. He would be well known around Swords; they call him 'the bodhran man,' and he really loves being a part of the group; it keeps him going." He is extremely family orientated and mentions his wife Patricia who was an international folk dancer and an Irish dance teacher. "We met through a tour so the music brought us together in a way" and his three children: Cian (who is a well known cyclist), Niamh (who works as a jockey and is carrying on this after Ronnie was involved with it) and Eoin who works in film production. In his spare time, Ronnie is a big golf fan, he loves horse racing and is also musical director of Ballyboughal Choir. He has been working with Eircom since he left school and says that a career high was when he was involved in creating a system that would be used in the Special Olympics. While it's clear that Ronnie is an extremely busy man; he runs both groups in his spare time while working during the day, it is obvious that he relishes being involved in community life. "I've always loved being involved in the community life in Ballyboughal and I don't see that changing any time soon," he concluded.
“The emphasis is all about showcasing local talent.”

Strictly Amazing Evening For Chernobyl Charity Kettles Hotel, Rolestown was thronged at capacity as up to 400 people attended the “Strictly Come Dancing” evening for the Sunflower Chernobyl Children’s Project, Dublin Group on Friday, 26th April last on the 27th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster. The evening was opened by the Sunflower Chernobyl Group Leader, Caroline Dunne who welcomed the crowd and who was “awed and humbled with the support” and thanked everyone involved who gave their time freely and tireless to make the evening a highly professional show. Guest judges included County Mayor, Cllr Cian O’Callaghan, Senator Darragh O’Brien and Jacqueline McStay, owner of the McDonald’s franchises in Swords. The performance and dedication of each couple, who trained tirelessly over the previous seven weeks showed with the intricate moves and lifts and the judges were immensely impressed with the performances and the scoring were high and extremely close. The winners, Linda and Stephen Biggin were crowned champions, with Elaine Dunne and Darren Croly, a close second, with Andrew McCann and Denise Watson coming third. Neil and Olive Hall were awarded “most improved” couple and Karen and Gerry Bowers, the “most glamorous.” The entertainment went on well into the night with music till late with the dancers and audience still buzzing and overwhelmed with the evenings success.
There’s no doubt about it that your pet is a true member of the family. Your furry or not-so-furry friend makes for a wonderful companion, but there’s no doubt about it; each pet, whether it be a cat, dog, rabbit, gerbil or a slightly more exotic creature, needs real care and attention.
Exercise The majority of your pets will need a good dose of daily exercise, so it’s essential to make sure that a member of the family or someone you know and trust will be on hand to make sure that they get it. Dogs in particular require a great deal of this so it is essential for their health that they are walked every day. Some animals require less exercise than others, so it’s important to know the amount your pet will need from the get go. The North County has many dog walkers for example that you can hire if you know you’ll be out working during the day.

Diet And Health It’s very important to ensure your pet gets the right kind of nutrition when it comes to the food that they eat. If your pet becomes unwell after eating a certain type of food that may not agree with him, check the packet and take note of the ingredients so you know to steer clear of these in the future. Avoid foods that are heavy in additives and be aware of any allergies your pet might have, and if you’re unsure what type or kind of food your pet should eat, ask your vet. On the subject of vets, be sure to take your dog when its a pup to get its first injections, de-wormed and then a booster shot each year. It’s also a good idea to micro chip and neuter your pets, especially if you’re not planning to breed them (this also prevents them from developing many diseases). It is also important to never self-diagnose your pets illness or attempt to give them any form of tablets (this is toxic). If your pet is unwell, take them to see a qualified professional.
Grooming Just as important as their health and exercise is their general grooming. So things like maintaining their coat length, clipping their paw nails and dental and eye care health all need to be taken care of as needed. Some pets need to be washed more than others (Rabbits are not meant to be bathed). There are plenty of pet groomers located here in the North County that will facilitate all your pet grooming needs, so make sure to visit these on a regular basis to ensure your pet is groomed as needed.

favourite spring colours and plant them as they are. A visit to your local garden centre will ensure that you can avail of the necessary flowers, shrubs and trees to give your garden that wow factor. Don’t be afraid to experiment with colours and garden design. Your local garden centre will be only too pleased to provide you with the necessary advice, as well as the plants needed for this purpose. You will find all the supplies, materials, fertilisers and machinery you need to do a great job in your local garden store, so you won’t have to go miles to spruce up the garden. Even just cleaning up all the weeds and old
plants will really make a difference. Here you will need the services of a good skip hire company to take rubbish away. When planning a Spring Clean up, it is important to plan ahead. Make sure you have the proper tools to carry out the job. You will need a strong rake to scarify the grass before cutting. Lawn mowing can be tough and time consuming, however with the right mower it can actually be an enjoyable experience. Tending your lawn should take minimum effort and provide maximum pleasure, and with the wide range of lawn mowers available on the market, it is easy to purchase the wrong one, thus making the job tedious and costly. Questions about how often to mow will sometimes arise. For those who like to mow often, mulching is a good idea, as the mulched clippings fertilise the new growth keeping your lawn green. One of the deadliest enemies of the keen gardener is the presence of moss on the lawn. Moss, like most lawn weeds primarily takes advantage of bare areas but do not kill out existing grass, as some believe. Bare areas in the lawn can be the result of several causes. Unsuitable grass varieties, poor drainage, drought, soil compaction, excessive shade,

poor fertility and improper mowing can all contribute to this disease. Improvements here can encourage thick, healthy grass and provide a key to long term prevention. A neatly kept garden is the first impression a visitor gets of your house. This first impression is lasting and if your garden is not kept up to scratch, it’s unlikely that your home will be any better. Now is the perfect time to start tidying up your garden. If you need a major clean-up after the harsh winter and spring that we have just endured, you will need to engage the services of a professional landscaper. Luckily, there are many such companies here in the North County, who will provide you with a top class service to make sure your garden, the entrance to your home, looks at it’s best. With smaller gardens, you may be in a position to undertake small jobs yourself. Sowing a new lawn can be undertaken, with local garden centres ready to provide you with all your requirements and to give excellent advice. Larger jobs, like

paving and decking will give your house an added dimension and can provide that all-important outside room, which can be enjoyed as the long summer evenings arrive. Local land-
scaping companies specialise in garden design, as well as paving, decking, water features, stone cladding, trellis work and even rainwater harvesting. This can ensure that your
garden is being used in an eco friendly way, thus ensuring that the environment is protected. Landscaping can make such a difference to your garden. Wildlife will flourish in a well maintained garden and many people like to cultivate a wild garden, which attracts butterflies and bird life, which can be enjoyed by the entire family. Up to 150 ladies attended the annual Ladies Lunch, hosted by Howth RNLI Ladies’ Guild, at Howth Yacht Club recently. Local author, Siobhán McKenna entertained the guests and The Secret Closet boutique held a fashion show. Three members of the Howth Lifeboat crew Ian Martin, David Howard and Ian Sheridan also dropped in to thank the ladies for their generosity and support. Ladies Guild Chairperson, Maeve Derham lead the committee which co-ordinated the event. Unfortunately the guild’s President, Maura McLoughlin was unable to attend, but she was well repre-
sented by her daughters, including Maura Farrell the Honorary Secretary.
Rose Michael, Howth RNLI Fundraising Chairperson told the County Leader: “Funds raised today by the unstinting generosity of these ladies will go towards the cost of running the lifeboat station for a week.”

company, the vehicle later fell into disrepair only to be discovered in a dilapidated condition on a Co. Kilkenny farm some 20 years ago. In the intervening period, it was fully restored to its original condition by Dubliner Denis Dowdall who, at that time, was service manager with Mercedes-Benz in Ireland. Through his connections to the German carmaker, he was able to secure copies of the original drawings of the vehicle and many of the hand-made parts he required to bring the car back to life. Now in full working order, the single cylinder ‘horseless carriage’ bears the number IK 52, denoting the fact that it was the fifty-second car to apply for registration after the system was introduced here in the early 1900s.
