Last week, excitement flooded through Swords as the Christmas Tree lights were turned on. A beautiful Christmas tree was erected in front of the imposing Swords Castle. County Mayor, Ken Farrell had the honour of officially turning on the lights and the locals and visitors all cheered in delight. The celebrations had just started, when somebody shouted, “Look It’s him”. One man said he saw Santa in a sleigh over the castle, however the celebrations were in full swing down the other end of the town and most were unaware of his presence. The man, who was on route to the event, said he just saw him over the shop roofs and he had a big bag packed with what looked like letters. When asked where exactly he saw the jolly chubby character
the man said, “ Well it looked like he was on the roof of the County Leader.” The man was convinced it was Santa and described him as round, jolly, and dressed in a red suit. Last Friday when the staff of the County Leader came to work, all the children’s Santa letters were gone! Upon discovering this, the County Leader contacted Santa and were lucky enough to obtain an exclusive interview with the big jolly man. Santa told the County Leader, “HO HO HO, yes indeed I did get the letters and will be sure to get the rest before Christmas Eve. So keep sending them in,” he said. “It always gives me a warm feeling when I come to this part of the world on my journey on Christmas eve. Continued on page 21

North County Dublin’s
Sleepless In Balbriggan By Bob McKenzie Derek Sweeney is having trouble sleeping, but the Balbriggan resident isn’t an insomniac by choice. It is due to engineering works on the railway track behind his house, carried out in the wee small hours. Mr Sweeney and his family, from Bath Road in Balbriggan, have had their sleep interrupted on a regular basis over the last few months and decided to complain to Iarnród Eireann about the works and the lack of prior notice given to them and neighbours. The Sweeney’s complaints were shunted around the internal departments of the national rail carrier, with their questions being largely ignored with the odd morsel of information about future works their only crumbs of comfort. The works mean floodlights, diggers and various other heavy machinery and tend to happen between the unsociable hours of midnight and 3 am. Mr

Sweeney contacted the County Leader at the end of his tether. “We experience this every 8-10 weeks with heavy machinery driving down the estate before going on the tracks. I understand that these works need to be done after the last train, but all this machinery has floodlights which also keep us awake. Our main gripe is the lack of notice,” he said. He has been given a schedule of works that will take place over the next few weeks and it looks as if it’s going to get worse. Lynne Byrne of Iarnród Eireann sent the Sweeneys an e-mail which stated, “in relation to works carried out on the tracks, I wish to apologise for any inconvenience caused to you. As you understand these works were for safety purposes and were of an urgent nature. These works are Derek Sweeney now completed. I have enclosed a schedule of future works and I can assure you that every effort will be made to keep any noise or potential disruption to a minimum.” The Sweeneys are hopeful that things will improve.
Swords School Plans Silver Anniversary In 1986, St. Colmcille’s Girls’ National School, Swords, moved into a brand new building. Prior to this, the Girls’ school shared a building with the Boys’ school just metres away. This shared arrangement had been in place since 1966, when both the Boys’ and Girls’ schools moved from their North Street premises. This ‘new’ school is 25 years old and this school year, the entire school community is celebrating their silver anniversary in style. As part of their celebrations, many varied activities are planned. A Skipathon has already taken place which proved to be a
very successful, energetic event. All classes from Junior Infants to 6th Class took part and skipping as a healthy activity was given the thumbs up by all. Other events planned, include a commemorative calendar which goes on sale before Christmas and the launch of the school brochure. Special celebrations for past and present pupils and their parents will take place during the year. On 19th January, 2011 at 10.30am, an Open Day will highlight St. Colmcille’s wide variety of activities. All parents who are considering sending their daughters to St. Colmcille’s Girls’ National School are invited to visit on the day, as indeed is anybody who has an interest in finding out more about the school.

Council’s Hard Work Pays Off In Big Freeze
Staff of our local County Council deserve great credit for their efforts to keep our roads and footpaths clear in the current freeze up. They have obviously learned from last year’s experience, in contrast to Dublin City Council, which has been caught out through lack of planning and not enough gritting to keep the city moving freely. Our council has a total of 185 staff deployed in snow and ice clearing operations. This consists of 13 staff working on gritting of motorways and the main road network. An additional 172 staff are deployed in different towns and areas across the county. These crews are using other machinery and are working in priority areas, such as entrances to fire stations, railway stations, pedestrian crossing areas, access to transport nodes and bus shelters, entrances to housing estates, entrances to burial grounds and ice breaking in town centres/populated areas. The crews also treat areas that fall outside these categories, but which are known, from past experience, to give rise to difficult driving/walking conditions due to gradients etc. The council’s salting/gritting operations give priority to national primary routes and major bus routes, to keep access to public transport hubs, such as train stations and the airport. Their endeavours have ensured that as many roads as possible have remained open and, their attention to detail and forward planning is worthy of great praise indeed. County Manager, David O’Connor told the County Leader, “Our staff are using their local knowledge and working with local businesses, communities and citizens to ensure as many people as possible are able to access roads and public transport, and to keep the county moving,” he concluded.

critically need to provide public services. This is one of the results of Fianna Fail and Green Party cutbacks. However, it is the councillors who decide the budget. Any councillor who supports the budget as it stands is voting to cut the ambulance service.” She continued, “It is time that they stood up and were counted.
Firefighters have taken a massive 22 per cent cut in pay in order to deliver savings, and yet numbers on the frontline are being cut. Front-line staff numbers are now at 1985 levels, despite the fact that the population has grown massively in that time. Meanwhile, managerial budgets have ballooned. This is simply not good enough. We cannot
stand by and vote in a budget having being given this information by firefighters.” Daly concluded by urging firefighters and the broader community to step up the pressure on the councillors by assembling outside the council offices on December 21st at 3pm when the council budget meeting takes place,” she said.
Meanwhile, Deputy Darragh O’Brien (FF) said, “I am concerned that there is a threat hanging over the Swords Dublin fire brigade ambulance service. I hope the HSE and Dublin City Council can reach a financial resolution to ensure this crucial service for the people of Swords, Malahide and surrounding areas receive this ambulance service. Like Deputy Reilly, I took the opportunity to meet the station’s crew and staff in the past week or so.
Funding Will Create Local Jobs Deputy Michael Kennedy (FF) has welcomed the announcement that € 1 5 0 , 0 0 0 i n a d d itional grant aid is being provided to Fingal County Enterprise Board to support small business projects. This measure will create 21 jobs locally. Kennedy said, “The Taoiseach’s plan to invest €3.3 million in the network of County Enterprise Boards across the country will see
county enterprise boards is in nurturing entrepreneurs who are willing to take risks and try to get their business idea off the ground. The Government is committed to taking
action on jobs - it’s the number one priority and this is another example of the frontline effort being undertaken to encourage growth and business expansion,” he concluded.
The work they do is exceptional. Petty squabbling between the HSE and the city council over funding the service is not on. A sizeable portion of the patients and people the Swords ambulance D134 looks after are elderly, the very people we are discussing. If we cannot provide this emergency service, it does not reflect well on us or the HSE. It is important that we retain the Swords ambulance service for the people of the North County,” he concluded.

Dick was awarded the IT volunteer of the year award by Minister for Older People and Health Promotion, Aine Brady. The judges were very impressed with him and said “ Despite illness he has persevered”. All who have been nominated for these awards are ambassadors for the older people and society should widely celebrate this. Age is no barrier to learning technology”.

your car is essential, it is so important to take some time out to make sure your journey in winter conditions is as safe as possible. In the morning, get up at least 20 minutes earlier to prepare your car. Car batteries struggle in cold weather. Start the car first and don’t switch on other electrics until after it has started. Clear all windows of snow and ice, using a scraper and de-icer. Pouring boiling water is not a good idea, as it can weaken or even crack your windscreen. It’s worth carrying a fully charged mobile phone, torch, first aid kit, tow rope, blanket and warm clothes and boots. Wear comfortable, warm shoes that will not slip off the pedals. Remember to keep your distance, as stopping distance is 10 times longer in ice and snow. Gentle manoeuvres are the key to safe driving. Start in second gear and get to the highest gear as soon as possible, because the less wheel revolutions, the less likely to slide. When climbing a hill, it’s important to avoid having to stop on the hill by waiting until it is clear of other cars, or by leaving plenty of room between yourself and the car in front. Try to maintain a constant speed, choosing the most suitable gear well in advance, thus avoiding having to change down gear on the hill. When driving downhill, reduce your speed before the hill, use a low gear and try to avoid using the brakes. If you have to use them, apply them gently and declutch if the car skids. It is advisable to plan your routine favour of major roads which are more likely to br gritted. It’s also a good idea to allow extra time, and be prepared to accept the inevitability of being late, if you are caught up in an unexpected delay. Above all else, arrive safely.

Central Bank confirms “Fat Cat Bankers’” Pay STILL has not been tackled FF/GREEN GOVT CUTS MIN. WAGE BUT REFUSES TO MOVE ON BANK EXECUTIVES PAY The Central Bank Report recently released into pay policies at the Irish banks has delivered damning findings and confirmed that executive pay polices along with high remuneration and bonus packages are not being tackled, according to Fine Gael’s James Reilly TD. “Irish taxpayers will be outraged that, once again, the Government is turning a blind eye to fat cat bankers’ pay while simultaneously hammering those on the
minimum wage and social welfare. “Disastrous decisions by the banks and Government have cost the taxpayer tens of billions of euro already and the IMF deal agreed by Fianna Fáil and the Greens will see the public forced to pick up bank debts for a generation. “Those at the top of the banks who were respon-
This will need to be done in conjunction with community groups, local elected representatives, council officials and will be lead by Bus Eireann? Reply: (a) A trial date for the introduction of a one way system on Chapel Street is yet to be decided if it is to happen at all and discussions in this regard are ongoing with local residents and businesses. The opening of the new Tesco store will have a significant impact on traffic flow in the area and this impact will be accessed during early 2011 in consultation with the local community. (b) It is planned to have the new signals at the square operational during December 2010.
There are still outstanding works being carried out to allow the signals to be switched on. (c) Bus Eireann will be responsible for the provision of bus stops along the route. The Council will liaise with Bus Eireann in relation to the provision of appropriate lining etc. (d) Bus Eireann has very recently confirmed that following discussions with the local community a revised route for the 100 service has been substantially agreed. The bus will continue to serve the railway station and will extend to the Castleland area in addition to an improved service in the north west of the town.

(b) How do clubs avail of this facility and (c) What is the charge for usage? Reply: (a) Currently Strand Athletic have been allocated dressing-rooms for the current season. is forthcoming ‘banks risk repeating past errors.’ “The Government is sole owner of one bank and is a majority shareholder in others, yet Brian Cowen and Brian Lenihan outrageously refuse to move on senior executives’ pay. This is blatantly unfair as those on lower incomes take a beating. It is clear that Fianna Fáil once again has put the interests of wealthy bank executives ahead of the rest of the country.”
Govt Sold Out Ireland For An Appalling Deal - Reilly
Reilly Calls For Improved Balbriggan Town Bus Service Questions to Fingal County Manager: (a) When will the one way system be put in place on Chapel Street and which direction will it go? This will affect any proposed alternative bus route. (b) When will the 4 sets of new Pedestrian traffic lights, which are installed but not operational, be put into operation in the town. This will affect the timing of the bus service. (c) Will the Council help with putting in the new bus stops and paint the lines on the road for the bus stops when the route is confirmed. (d) Will the Council help with the submission to the Department of Transport to finally change the route?
sible for reckless decisions are, in many cases, still in place but, more than two years after the banking crisis came to the fore, the Central Bank has now confirmed that pay policies at the banks have not been changed substantially. In fact, the Central Bank has damningly concluded that ‘risk tolerance, objectives, values and longterm interests were not generally reflected in the remuneration policies of most banks’ and that unless change

This is paid in advance in moieties of €300 (i.e.20 matches) for each double changing suite and any balance outstanding at the end of a season will be carried forward to the following season Clubs are required to provide a bond of 500 per double. It will be the duty of the club to provide all sundries such as toilet paper, cleaning equipment, cleaning materials etc. required to maintain the dressing rooms.
Speaking after details of the Irish bailout were released, James Reilly TD said: “This is a hugely disappointing result for the country. It’s hard to imagine how this deal could have been much worse. People are right to feel frightened, and worried about the future, when our own Government has sold out the country on such lousy terms. “The Government was cleaned out in the negotiations and has not acted in the best interests of Ireland. At the very least we could have expected a low rate of interest on the loans, EU agreement on a jobs and growth package, and agreement to share the cost of rescuing the banks with the bond holders. The Government came away with none of these. “Fianna Fáil has once again sacrificed taxpayers’ interests in order to bail out the banks. “The interest rate of 5.8% is far too high and verges on the unaffordable. The lack of significant detail on plans to restructure the banks is worrying. A huge chunk of the National Pension Reserve Fund and other domestic funds will be poured into a black hole to recapitalise the banks. This
money could have been used to stimulate the economy and provide jobs. “As a sovereign State and a fully paid-up member of the Eurozone, Ireland could have struck a much better bargain. The fact that the EU and ECB have asked us to bail out foreign bond investors who invested foolishly in our banks, with the pension fund money accumulated with difficulty over many years, should have been used as a powerful bargaining chip. It clearly was not. “The pushing out of the deadline
to reach the 3% deficit target simply reflects a lack of belief in the Government’s growth strategy. Furthermore, Ireland will still have to impose €15 billion worth of cutbacks over the next four years. “It was a Government Minister who first used a poker analogy to describe these negotiations. Well, the Government has been out-bid and out-negotiated at every turn. For some reason the Government decided to play it soft, and allowed the IMF, the EU and the ECB to win hands down.”

James Reilly News
Reilly Welcomes Backing FINGAL NEEDS METRO NORTH Of Metro North James Reilly Welcomes The Inclusion Of Metro North In The Four Year Capital Plan Which Was Approved Recently By The IMF This is great news for North Dublin because Metro North will put 5,000 construction workers back on the job and deliver 37,000 jobs long-term, in Fingal. When James Reilly recently met the Metro North Project Managers (RPA) here’s what he found Metro North will deliver: 5,000 construction jobs, saving €100m year in social welfare payments. 5,000 new jobs at Dublin airport in the new international hub project. 37,000 permanent jobs in Fingal, according to international consultants Indecon. And that’s not all! • Metro North will cost HALF THE FIGURE BANDIED ABOUT IN MEDIA. • It will be paid for over thirty years. • It’s a bargain because of the drop in build costs. “Metro North will connect North Dublin to the capital city in a new way, at a cost-effective price while delivering desperately-needed jobs in Fingal.” METRO NORTH – ESSENTIAL FOR THE FUTURE OF FINGAL, PIVOTAL FOR JOB CREATION!
Reilly Warns Salt Supplies Will Not Outlast Winter Fine Gael’s James Reilly TD has warned that Ireland does not have enough salt supplies to last through a difficult winter. “Yesterday the NRA told the Oireachtas Transport Committee that fewer than 40,000 tons of salt are now in storage. Although more salt is arriving by ship by the end of next week, we are currently using between 3,500 and 4,000 tons a day. This provides us with
just over ten days’ worth of supply. “There is enough salt in stock for national primary routes and a very limited number of agreed secondary roads to get us through this particular cold spell, expected to last until next week. But significant quantities of salt must be imported in the coming weeks to carry us through the winter months. “And the situation is even more serious for non-primary routes,
Fine Gael Budget 2011 - Taxation Encouraging Work by Protecting Competitive Personal Income Taxes A major strength of the Irish tax system is the relatively low “tax wedge” on work. The low tax wedge and competitive direct rates were a vital ingredient in Ireland’s return to full employment in the late 1990s. At a time of mass unemployment, now is not the time to ditch this tax model. That is why Fine Gael opposes proposals to raise either the standard 20% or the top 41% rate of income tax. Even higher tax rates on personal income would be counterproductive. They would discourage people from working harder, doing overtime and aiming for promotion. They inhibit companies from locating highly paid high tech jobs here. And they push self employed people into the grey economy. Fine Gael also opposes the scale of the Government’s proposals to massively increase income taxes on the low and middle income earners. Under the Government’s proposals, a single person at work on the current minimum wage will be €586 worse off – or €12 per week. A single person at work on an average industrial wage of just over €36,000 will be €1,223 worse off – or just over €24 per week – and will take home only 49c for every extra euro they earn above this level. At a time when, as a nation we must work and grow our way out of a debt crisis, this is a dangerous proposal. Under our proposals, a single employee on the minimum wage will take home an extra €8 per week in 2011 compared with the Government’s plan. Equally, a single employee earning €36,400 will take home an extra €15 per week compared with the Government’s tax plan. Closing Tax Loopholes for the Rich, Fine Gael will put a greater emphasis than this Government on increasing tax yields by closing the big tax loopholes for the rich. A Fine Gael Government will:
• Suspend (now closed) property related tax reliefs; • Cut pensions tax relief for top earners • Reduce Tax Relief for Patent Royalties; • Introduce new residency rules for tax exiles (as per Commission on Taxation's "Economic Test") Fine Gael commits itself to maintaining the 12.5% rate of Corporation Profit Tax. Our low corporation profit tax rate remains an anchor of Irish industrial policy that draws foreign direct investment into Ireland, fosters innovation and keeps companies from leaving for lower cost locations.

where salt stocks are totally inadequate. The NRA has admitted it doesn’t even know how much salt is in stock at county council level. “The lack of co-ordination between local authorities and the NRA is unacceptable. There is considerable legal uncertainty about whether councils can supply farmers and communities with salt to spread on local roads without exposing them to insurance risk. The Attorney General’s office must provide legal certainty to local authorities. “We also need clarity on who has responsibility to purchase salt for non-primary roads. It is ridiculous that the NRA is centrally
purchasing large quantities of salt for primary routes, but not purchasing for county council stocks. “Despite the lessons of last February, Ireland is still suffering from a woeful lack of co-ordination and planning to deal with extreme cold weather. Many parts of Ireland have been almost shut down because of the cold weather. This should not have to happen.” “I welcome the fact that Fingal County Council have quadrupled their salt supplies and I commend the efforts of the council team of 185 in the roads department in their efforts to keep our main roads open”.

Live register shrinks as best & brightest flee the country The falling live register is the clearest indication yet that thousands of skilled people are fleeing the country to find work abroad, James Reilly TD has warned. “Sadly the fall in the live register of just over 4,000 does not reflect any increase in the numbers at work. These people are not leaving the live register to take up new jobs - they are leaving the country. “Emigration is now really biting. In the last month alone, a third of
the reduction in the live register can be accounted for by a relatively small group of professionals, while over 40% are under the age of 25. These are the most outwardly mobile categories, and they are leaving in droves. “Ireland is crying out for a credible jobs strategy to keep talent at home. Fine Gael is the only Party which has made job creation a key priority, and has produced credible plans to make it happen.
“The financial crisis does impose severe constraints for the next five years. However, it does not render us powerless. More vital than ever are: • Strategic investment in key economic arteries such as broadband and energy; • Work experience and activation on a much more ambitious scale; • A Prices, Costs and Income policy to tackle competitiveness in a more balanced way; • Busting bottlenecks that are still holding back major sectoral opportunities; • State-backed partial credit guarantees for viable small businesses.”

Sleigh Bells Over Swords Continued from page 1 The boys and girls in the North County are very good and there are very few homes that have naughty children there. This year, the snowy conditions will make the journey for Rudolph and his crew a lot more speedy in the sledge. The snow and frost are the perfect conditions for the reindeer and the Magic Sledge glides along faster.” We asked Santa how things were coming along in Lapland and he said, “HO HO HO, well now the Elves have been very busy this year and are just putting the finishing touches to the toys. Myself and Mrs Claus have read most of the Santa letters the children from all over the world have sent us. We have also been enjoying the snowy conditions here in Ireland, especially in the North County, because it reminds us so much of home. The children may not know this, but we are always dropping in and out of the North County, it’s one of our favourite places in the world. Santa was so nice to us here at the County Leader and is such a jolly man. Dressed in his red
suit, we fed him on cookies and gave him some carrots for Rudolph and the other reindeer. We then asked Santa about the sighting in Swords last Thursday as the lights were turned on and he said, “HO HO HO, I’m always around and yes, I did see the lights being turned on. I could see it from my sledge way up in the sky, but maybe I did come down to take a closer look HO HO HO”. So, was it indeed Santa who was on the roof tops last week here in Swords, or did the man who saw him imagine it? Don’t forget children, after hearing what Santa said about always being around and that he saw the Christmas lights of Swords from way up in the sky in his sledge, be sure to be good in order to avoid not getting what you want this Christmas. Santa asked the staff here in the County Leader to give the children a message for him, “Remember boys and girls, get to bed nice and early on Christmas Eve and be very good for your parents and be kind hearted to all. Oh, and have a Merry Christmas HO HO HO.”
Great Honour For Local Golf Clubs Two North County Golf Clubs were named among 30 golf clubs newly accredited under the National Standards Framework for Golf Clubs at Fáilte Ireland Head Office. The clubs are Corrstown and Donabate Golf Clubs. These new standards were developed in conjunction with the Golf Quality Assurance Group, as part of the Golf Forums role in developing golf in Ireland. They follow the customer’s journey through the booking process from their arrival at the course and reception and clubhouse facilities, all the way to golf standards and post game facilities. This ensures that the customer can expect high quality customer service from all
staff, who can provide information on costs, tee-times, course disruptions and more from arrival through to departure. They also looked at the golf course to see if it is in good condition, with good maintenance practices in place. The clubhouse facilities and food and beverage services were also scrutinised. The clubs were also found to have adequate facilities available for mobility impaired guests. These standards offer the two clubs a number of distinct advantages, including free listings on the domestic and international Discover Ireland websites and access to key Fáilte Ireland business supports.

Last week, a former Community Centre in Pinewood Estate, Balbriggan was destroyed by a blaze that broke out. The blaze was attended by three units of Dublin Fire brigade from Balbriggan, Skerries and Swords. It’s not definite if the fire was started deliberately, but entry to the centre was accessed through a window at the rear of the building where there is proof of forced entry. The Community Centre has been closed for the last two years when it was decided the building should be reverted to local authority housing. Since then, the centre became run down due to being unoccupied and became a ground for anti-social behaviour. A spokesperson from Balbriggan Reserve Fire station told the County Leader, “There was extensive damage done to the property including the roof, attic and a lot of water damage. The roof was ablaze on our arrival and we had to wait on another appliance to attend the scene before we could send fire-fighters in to tackle the blaze. It took two hours for us to bring the blaze under control," he said. Gardai have arrested two juveniles in connection with the blaze.

North County Leader’s Weekly Helpful Guide For Jobseekers
So Where Are The Jobs? Writes Siobhán Kinsella The employment landscape in Ireland has changed dramatically over the last number of years; remember though there are still 1.2 million people employed in the economy. Some areas have been hit much more so than others. Needless to say that construction, architecture, legal and investment or fund management have been hit the hardest. So where are the jobs? Regardless of sector, all companies have a requirement for accounts staff, credit controllers and sales people. It is fair to say that even though these jobs exist, they now encompass more within their roles. Areas in which we are still
experiencing demand across our group companies are for one: Healthcare, from nurses, doctors to healthcare assistants. Nursing homes are in greater demand because of the changes in our society and positively, because we are all living longer. On the radio you hear advertisement after advertisement for homecare solutions. These solutions need to be resourced! These roles are often suitable to those who don’t want to be tied only to 9- 5 working hours. Training is required, however it does not take substantial investment and does not take long to qualify. Another point to remember that regardless of sector, every company needs someone to sell, someone to pay the bills and the staff and also someone to collect the money! Therefore previous experience in selling and working to targets is a great advantage in the current climate. This is great news if you are considering a course of study to get into these areas. I’d say that’s great news as there will be fewer barriers to entry. An IATI course for example is widely
available and relatively inexpensive and is a fantastic grounding in accounts. If considering a change in career, look at job boards and see the vacancies outside of your experience. Look at the minimum requirements listed on the advertisements. The easier these are to achieve or obtain, the easier it is to transfer to this area. Siobhan Kinsella is Manager of CPL and Flexsource Solutions with responsibility for the Fingal area. She is a Director of Fingal Dublin Chamber of Commerce & Drinan Enterprise centre. Siobhan is also an active member of the Rotary Club of Dublin Fingal

Sargent Welcomes Severe Weather Funding Deputy Trevor Sargent (GP), has welcomed extra funding for local authorities to tackle the effects of severe weather. Minister John Gormley announced an additional €15 million in contingency funding for local authorities to cover exceptional costs associated with the extreme weather currently being experienced. The money will be available for those local authorities most in need of supplementary funding, as a contribution to exceptional costs as a result of the weather. Sargent said, “The sustained cold weather is having a significant impact on people’s travelling. I’d like to reiterate the calls for people to cut out unnecessary journeys, and to take public transport, where possible, if they must travel. Bus and train operators and the County Council staff are working hard to keep public transport and the primary road networks functioning. Indeed, I’d like to pay tribute to the dedication of these staff, who often have to work in appalling weather conditions,” he said. He continued, “The Council are prioritising the

salting of the national roads that carry the bulk of cars and buses. Obviously, not every road and footpath can be gritted but there should be a focus on clearing the areas around town centres, train stations, churches and schools when they are open. “I’m glad there has been
clarity brought to the legal liability question. The Attorney General has confirmed that home and business owners will not be liable for accidents, as a result of snow and ice cleared from their premises, if the clearing is done in a safe manner. This is a common

sense approach that will provide reassurance to those keeping their premises ice free.”

Charlie Would Have Cleared The Decks The family of the late Taoiseach, Charles Haughey has put his beloved yacht, ‘Celtic Mist’ up for sale. It was described by the selling agent as a comfy little boat and among its previous owners was a certain Irish PM. The asking price is €175,000. The yacht was a familiar sight on the south western coast, as it ferried the fun loving former Taoiseach to the Dingle Regatta and his own island of Inishvickillane, off the Kerry coast. The yacht also featured

opulence, up for sale in the heartland of British sailing, with the Union Jack to its
bow. We’re sure he would have cleared the decks, me hearties!

Swords Karate Kids Win Medals Galore At the beginning of 2010, who would have guessed that Hokubu Dojo Karate (Swords Karate club), would have amongst their members several National title holders and three new Black belts?. Chief Instructor Dermot O’Keeffe told the County Leader, “We travelled to Edinburgh in October for the JKS Scottish championships, returning with 11 trophies, four gold, four silver and three bronze. On September 13th, our members participated in the Onakai All Ireland championships, held in the Alsaa club. This year, Amy McFadden won gold, Creona Kealy won silver and both Jennifer O’Keeffe and Megan Kirwan won bronze. This in itself was a fantastic achievement for our club. Our final event of the year was the European Championships. We travelled with three members of our club to the, Japan Karate Shotoremnei European Championships held in Ramat Gan city near Tel Aviv, Israel. This event was the premier competition of the year and our students didn’t hold back. They knew that this event was the one we had prepared for all year long. The hard work paid off with our members placing Jennifer O’Keeffe fourth, Creona Kealy won silver and Amy Mc Fadden won gold. Both finalists had to work really hard in their respective finals. Jennifer O’Keeffe was unlucky to narrowly miss out on a medal this time. “I couldn’t be prouder of my students, they have worked reall y hard and deserve everything they get. Next year we have some tough competitions coming up in France, Italy and the World Championships in Scotland.”

MORTIMER DOYLE 35 Longlands, Swords, Co. Dublin 5th May 1935 – 20th November 2010 Morty Doyle grew up in a Glaswegian family who came to live in Dublin and opened a pub in Oriel Street, Dublin 1.
BRIAN DUFFY (Born 18/1/29 – Died 10/12/08) Two long years Dad now have past, Since the family saw you last. Not fully recovered from our pain, The tears we shed fell like rain. Easier now for us to bear because of fond memories that we share. Family gatherings we miss you most, Raised glass we drink a toast. Glass held high to our dad, who was always a bit of a Jack the Lad. Your presence we feel always there, Reaching out with love and care. Of mum dad you would be proud, Looking out for your large crowd. She has been a beacon to us all, A listening ear any time we call. Memories we will always toast with the woman dad you loved most. We will all see you in our time when you help us up that final climb. Sadly missed by his Wife and Extended Family. Anniversary Mass in St. Colmcille’s Church on December 14th at 10am.
He was educated at CUS, Dublin 2. In 1957, he married Marie Byrne of Beaumont and they settled in Artane. In 1979 the family of 6 moved to Longlands in Swords. Morty would be well known to people in the North County as the proprietor of Classic Oil, later Emo Oil, of Riverview Mall, Swords, which he and Marie ran for 15 years. Morty also played a key role in the development of Balbriggan Business Park. Born a Scotchman, Morty was a strong republican and a long time chairman of the Eamon De Valera Cumann Swords. For more than 20 years Morty was a tenor in the choir of St. Colmcilles Church and it was indeed the very same choir under Ann McDonagh who sang at his funeral mass. Morty is survived by his wife and 4 children.
