very active in calling emergency meetings. The first meeting took place recently in Lusk, where a gathering of over 400 people angrily voiced their opposition to the plant being located in or around the heritage town. This was quickly followed by one in Rush last Wednesday evening which attracted a bumper crowd. Then, last Saturday, to coincide with the
final Open Day of the process, a huge crowd gathered outside County Hall in Swords to demonstrate the depth of revulsion felt towards the building of the Super Sewage Plant. This meeting was attended by people from all sectors of the community and left the Council in no doubt about their feelings. Local councillor, Ken Farrell (Lab) called the meeting in Lusk and was “staggered at the turnout.” He told the County Leader, “I called the meeting because there is grave concern that the northern half of the county is being turned into a complete dump. Privatisation Of Bin Collection Criticised Deputy Clare Daly (SP) has hit out at the recent awarding of the region’s household and commercial waste collection service contract to Panda Waste Ltd. Daly was
responding to the Council’s decision to award the leading waste collection company the contract following a competitive sale process involving four other

competitors. She criticised the decision, highlighting the ‘de facto’ hold that the monopoly will now have over the market which will, she said, “push prices up significantly”. Speaking to the County Leader, Daly, a former anti bin charge campaigner said: “This is a coming to pass of what we warned when bin charges were introduced. Once they brought in a charge and changed a public service to a commodity, it was inevitable that it would lead in this privatisation.” Panda will replace the Council in the collection of black and brown bins around the North County.
This will be followed by green bin collections from 1st January, the date on which the current outsourced service provider’s contract runs out. Panda has promised to maintain current prices for existing North County customers until at least 2013. They have also assured Council customers that they will honour their annual service fees up until the year’s end. Workers look set to be redeployed within the Council, a feature which also resulted in the Swords park ranger division being shifted out of the town. “It’s a disgrace the way the workers are being treated and redeployed to areas they’ve never worked in. Some have been working the same route for 20 years,” she concluded.

Launch Of New Swords Karate Facility ‘Self control, personal conduct and devotion’ was the message delivered at the recent official launch of Swords Karate Club’s new, purpose built, state of the art facility. The new building is located at Unit 8, Seatown Business Park, Swords. The launch, described by Sensei Dermot O’Keeffe as the culmination of his karate endeavours, was well attended by members of the public, karate enthusiasts and special guests. The dojo was officially opened by County Mayor, Cllr Gerry McGuire, with fellow
By Kieran Dunne local councillor, Darragh Butler (FF) also in attendance. Also present at the launch was one of the men responsible for bringing Karate to the masses in Ireland, Sensei Tommy McGrane, who at 84 years-old is still instructing classes on a regular basis. Speaking to the County Leader, Sensei O’Keeffe described his great pride in the new dojo and highlighted Karate’s rise in Ireland since he first took to the sport some 32 years ago: “I started back in 1979, right in
the middle of another recession. There weren’t many amenities at that time, but the appeal was Bruce Lee and all of his films.” “Since then Karate has become much more mainstream with people from all walks of life taking up the sport. I think now people can see the philosophical side of it and how it is actually an art-form. It also shows young people how to conduct themselves properly. It teaches focus; and if you can control your body, you can control your mind,” he concluded.

Malahide Man Returns From Seattle For Marathon Malahide man, David O'Farrell, was home from Seattle USA to run for Neurofibromatosis (NF) in the Dublin City Marathon. NF is a genetic disorder condition affecting young Hayden Lynch, who is the school friend of his son Cian, aged 11. Selfless David decided to raise awareness of Hayden’s condition. In training for four and a half months, David said that running the marathon is “very good for the head”. While the going is tough, it is worth it when you notice others are also “running their own race”. This was his second Dublin City marathon, which he ran in 5 hours 15 minutes. It is slightly slower than before, but very respectable considering the conditions. The past pupil of Coláiste Choilm, Swords and ex member of Malahide Golf Club would like to run next year. Whether he does so or not, he will do all he can to raise awareness for young Hayden and NF.

The Balbriggan Tidy Towns team left their shovels and wheelbarrows at home and took some time out to celebrate their 2011 Tidy Towns Endeavour Award success. They met up with friends and supporters for a social evening. There was plenty of banter as they recalled the making and installing of bat boxes and the beautiful tulips and bluebells that popped up all over town in Spring which were planted out in the previous November weather in freezing weather. Confidence was high that they would surpass their total in next year’s competition. Joe Troy, the Tidy Towns Chairperson gave a speech in which he thanked all the volunteers for their incredible dedication throughout the whole year. Cathaoirleach, Gráinne Maguire spoke on behalf of the Town Council and reiterated the close working relationship
that has been established between the Town Council and the Balbriggan Tidy Towns team. The whole team are looking forward to a little rest before work for spring planting starts again in a few weeks time.

the implications and work had commenced. This will not happen here. We are a community under siege and have been betrayed by the management of the County Council. North Fingal is an area under attack. Does anyone seriously believe that the C o u n c i l ’ s Environmental department can run a pipe the size of the M50 through our land.? They see us as a soft touch. Time is running out and lots of work needs to be done to defeat this project. A particular bone of contention for Farrell is that four of the selected sites are in the Lusk area. “Lusk has been burdened with landfill waste disposal in the region for the past 40 years. 08.11.2011 management of the County Council. The council is adopting a ‘Divide and Conquer’ policy by way of the fact that seven of the sites are situated reasonably close to each other. “It’s a way of getting communities to fight with each other,” he maintained. One particularly angry objector at the meeting described the County Manager, David O’Connor as being “like a headmaster who immediately puts up his hand to volunteer our area as a place where you can dump anything you want, without considering the consequences of his actions.” The Lusk meeting was attended by Charlie Weston from the Fairshare Action Group group in Donabate, whose magnificent resistance to the proposed siting of the Super Sewage Plant on the Donabate/Portrane peninsula, is widely regarded as having saved the area from housing the plant. He demonstrated community solidarity by pledging the assistance and expertise of

Fairshare to any community who felt they needed their experience. Last Wednesday’s public meeting in Rush was attended by practically all of the elected representatives of the area, which in itself clearly demonstrates the huge level of public anger over the issue. As well as Ken Farrell, the meeting was attended by local TD’s Brendan Ryan and Clare Daly, along with senator Darragh O’Brien (FF) and councillor Tom O’Leary (FG). All vehemently opposed the building of the plant. O’Brien was adamant that it is not a case of
shifting the problem from place to place. “This monster plant should not be built
anywhere. It will cost €2.7 billion to build and I’m sure that the people of Ireland
Expansion At A Later Date All of the elected representatives were supportive of smaller units which treat the local waste being upgraded as the way forward. Darragh O’Brien then proceed to provide some startling statistics about the capacity of the Super Sewage Plant. “Should the proposed plant get the go ahead, it will process a staggering 1,000 litres of sewage per second. More than forty, 40 foot containers will be required to haul away treated sewage per hour. This plant will cost over €2.7 million to build. In my view this is a dangerous, illthought out proposal which will impact negatively on our environment and our quality of life,” he said. He was also adamant that “the only reason that the Council are so eager to apply to host this plant is for financial gain.” All of the proposed sites are greater in size than the 20 hectares required and senator O’Brien is convinced that this is a ploy to ‘future proof’ the sites

would be outraged at the cost of such a venture.” Deputy Clare Daly also supported this view when she said: “Why spend this kind of money, while there are people lying on hospital trolleys all over the country. Remember that seven local authorities have already signed up for this project and the decision is to be made by management and has been taken out of the hands of councillors. He who shouts the loudest will decide where this Super Sewage Plant will be located, just like in
Donabate and Portrane,” she said. Tom O’Leary called for cross party support and for people to lobby government ministers and said there are question marks about whether this plant is necessary at all. He also pledged the support of local resident and Minister for Health, Dr James Reilly. Similarly Brendan Ryan urged the gathering to get themselves organised and he promised, when pressurised from the floor, “to oppose the Sewage Plant in the Dail.”
for expansion at a later date. “What will this plant do for the reputation of North County Dublin as the Market Garden of Ireland?. The reason the Council put their hand up for this project is to make money. In a few years time, we will be getting the sewage from all of Dublin,” said O’Brien. Ken Farrell told the County Leader that he “expects the chairpersons of Lusk Community Council and Rush Community Council, Brian Arnold and Anne McCrudden respectively, to spearhead a community alliance of all communities of North Fingal and they will be calling for an open forum meeting for all concerned parties against consistent attacks against this region.” As the meeting in Rush came to a conclusion and residents were invited to ask any questions they wished, they didn’t want any further technical details. They just wanted to know how best to organise themselves into a coherent and powerful force that would be ready for the big struggle ahead. You immediately got the impression that this group had already been over the fences before and had fought their corner and will not be beaten on this issue.

North County Living by Caroline Heffernan
Who You Gonna Call? Swords based fireman, Tom McLoughlin was born and bred in Malahide. “My father Jim worked on a stud farm at the Grange, near Scoil Iosa in Malahide and we lived in the gate lodge where I was born.” Sadly Tom's dad died when he was just two and he moved with his mother Kathleen, older brother James and younger sister Catherine who was only eight months old at the time to Inbhir Ide, where Tom has lived ever since. He left school after third year. “I didn't want to leave but because dad had died, I needed to get work and bring money into the home. I was employed by Vincent Jones the market gardener in Kinsealy.” Following a bad season for Vincent, Tom was let go and began working as a security guard in Ballymun Shopping Centre. In 1988 Tom decided he needed a change. “I got a job in the security department of Quinnsworth, where I was part of the close protection team for its Chief Executive, Don Tidey. At the same time, aged 23, I was accepted into the retained (part time) fire station in Malahide. It was one of four retained fire stations across the North County, the others being Balbriggan, Swords and Skerries. Having completed his training, Tom was given a pager which meant he was always on call. “I loved every minute of it but it was a huge draw on my life,” he explains. “My social life was affected by it, my family life was affected by it. If Tina my wife wanted to go for a walk, I'd ask her would she be long, it was quite a drag on her too.” Tom decided to leave Quinnsworth in 1999 when it became Tesco, and began working as a prison officer in Mountjoy. “I was there for four years, while working as a retained fire fighter at the same time and it was extremely awkward.” In 2003, following negotiations between SIPTU and Dublin City Council to bring part-time workers into the full time service, Tom was successful in his application and became full time staff. “We did six months training dealing with all types of fires and car crashes and we also completed a paramedic course in the Royal College of Surgeons preparing us for working on the ambulance. I always had an interest in the medical side of work and so I went on and became an advanced paramedic, following a two year post-graduate programme in Emergency Medical Science at UCD. Prior to that I completed a Masters degree in DCU. Going back to education was a priority for me.” Tom is happy to be assigned to either the fire brigade or the ambulance and the roster changes daily. There is one ambulance and one fire tender operating out of Swords and the recent controversy regarding the removal of the ambulance seems to have abated and the service is still available across the North County. I ask Tom what he enjoys about his job, “well anything you can do to get rid of someone's pain or make them more comfortable is great. A few years back, myself and Aidan McGrath were making our way from
Balbriggan to the Rotunda with a heavily pregnant woman and got as far as Whitehall when we had to pull in to a bus stop where we delivered a healthy baby girl,” Tom laughs. Being called out to a person having a heart attack or an accident scene doesn't upset him, except when children are involved. “If we go to an incident involving kids, there's always a bit of banter on the way out but if the outcome is bad on the way back it's always quiet. When we return to the station we sit around the table talking about the case, wondering if we could have done something differently and in a way it's a kind of counselling. He describes fire fighters as having three vital components, 'training, knowledge and experience.' “You don't go into a fire unless you have to. If there's nobody in the building we do what we can from the outside and make our way in gently but if there's someone missing or trapped inside, we do take some risk.” Tom and some of his colleagues, including Paul McEvoy and Fergus Byrne teach CPR, occupational first aid, and the use of defibrillators in schools and clubs across the North County. His hope is that defibrillators which cost about €1,400 will 'soon be as common as fire extinguishers.' Along with other members from Swords fire station, he recently provided defibrillator training at Skerries Town football club where Derek Earley tragically died in September this year. “Derek's dad, Kevin donated the defibrillator in his memory and we were delighted to do it.” Life as a fireman has enabled Tom indulge his passion for music. “I joined the Dublin Fire Brigade Pipe Band in 1993 and started playing the drums. We regularly play at charity events and have made appearances at Croke Park, the Rose of Tralee and the Impac literary awards. We have built up great friendships with pipe bands from fire departments across the globe, including those from New York, Chicago and Washington. To mark the 10th anniversary of 9/11, the Fire Brigade Pipe Band played a number of concerts in Dublin, with members of the NYFD in attendance, including one in the RDS and another at the Basketball Arena in Tallaght where they were joined by the Garda Band and the Tallaght Youth Band. His other passion is his camper van. “I bought it in 2007, something I'd always fancied doing, but couldn't when I was in the retained service in Malahide. Tina and the kids Claire, Kim and Tom absolutely love it and every summer we travelled to France. It's fantastic. There's no queuing at the airport with three kids and everything you want is with you.” Tom's enthusiasm for his career as a fireman is evident throughout our conversation. Despite the difficulties of constantly carrying a pager during his time in the retained service, he describes himself as 'a lifelong fireman.' “I was never going to leave. It became a passion, I would have done it for free.”
“You don't go into a fire unless you have to... if there's someone missing or trapped inside, we do take some risk.”

River Valley Creche held a sponsored toddle waddle in aid of the Meningitis Trust recently. The creche managed to raise €600 last year and the hope is that they can at least match that this year. Since 2002, they have raised €5,500 for the charity. Pictured are creche owner, Michelle Corrigan and Geraldine Leonard, with "waddlers" Bobby Collins, Jessica Kettle, Brian Donnelly, Conor Doyle, Scott McKinney, Hannah Edwards, Adam Edwards, Niall Leonard Palacios, David Collins, Archie Williams, Amelia Williams, Heather Conyard, Isobel McGregor, Olivia Kettle and Darryl Corrigan.
Charity Tractor Run In Lusk The second annual 'Tractor Run', in aid of Chernobyl, took place in Man O' War in Lusk recently. Organised by Barney Greene, the 'Tractor Run' is in its 6th year. The run went from Man O' War to Balcullin, Lusk, Blake's Cross, and Donabate before returning to the starting point. After which participants headed to the local pub for the raffle, spot prizes and entertainment. Barney and his team were putting the final touches together from 8 that morning.
However, this was only possible after “3 weeks of organising” by a voluntary and devoted committee. Every member has their role and plays their part “without the need for dictation”. It is this commitment that allows it to run smoothly and without panic. Money for the charity was raised through a €10 entrance fee and the raffle. Barney thanks the committee and everyone involved for their hard work.
Pictured before setting out are: Barney Greene, Adam Greene, Jim Gaffney, Barney Pic: PK Grimes and Matt Beggs.
Malahide Choir To Perform For Charity Malahide’s Enchiriadis Choir will present a concert on November 13th in Seabury Church from 3.00pm. It is in aid of the ISPCC. and representatives of the charity will accept voluntary donations after the concert. Chairperson, Gerry Fitzsimons says that choir members feel privileged to support the ISPCC: “This is the only organisation that’s there 24 hours every
day for children. Even on Christmas Day, the ISPCC volunteers will be out on duty for the children. These are children who don’t have any love or care in their lives, children of parents whose own lives are broken and hurt for all sorts of reasons,” he said. To continue their work, they rely on volunteers and on donations as they receive no government funding. So come along and enjoy an afternoon of music and donate what you can afford towards keeping ISPCC services available to children and young people in need.

Fashion Charity Night In Balbriggan A night of fashion and glamour saw €2,000 raised for the Irish Cancer Society in Balbriggan. Held in The Bracken Court Hotel, Tesco Extra held the fashion night all in aid of The Irish Cancer Society who they chose as their Charity Of The Year. The night was the new store's first charity event and was professionally organised from start to finish. It took three months to put together with staff adding final touches from 10 that morning. Entertainment was
provided by The Swords Youth Gospel Choir and 'Proud Mary' the Tina Turner impersonator. The night was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended and plenty of fun was had all while raising funds for charity. The €10 entrance fee and raffle proceeds all went towards the Irish Cancer Society. Spot prizes were provided by local businesses, so well done to everyone involved for all their hard work which ensured the event was a great success.

Car Safety This Winter
ICA Meeting
Winter is upon us, and winter driving comes with it. While safety is an important consideration all year long, there are certainly some auto maintenance jobs and safety checks that are specific to chilled air and winter driving that are a good idea to check into before we’re knee deep in the season. These winter maintenance tips will keep you out of trouble: Winter is not the time to get cheap about

your tyres, so take the time to check the tread depth. Also, be sure to check your tyre pressure. They lose a little pressure when it gets cold, so pump ‘em up. It takes wipers that are in top shape to keep your windshield clean and safe. On top of the checks you need to perform to ensure safe winter driving, now’s a good time to do some annual maintenance. Regularly treating your battery to a cleaning can keep electrical gremlins at bay.

Swords Lad’s Music Site Wins Web Award A website launched by a local Swords man has picked up the gong for Best Music Site at the Irish Web Awards held in Mansion House recently.
By Kieran Dunne The website, goldenplec.com, was founded nine years ago by Swords native, Aidan
Cuffe; and Kevin Meagher, when the two identified a gap in the market for a medium in which Irish acts could promote themselves via the internet. Speaking to the County Leader following the award ceremony, a pleasantly surprised Aidan said:

“When the name came out, it was sheer disbelief. The overriding feeling was one of vindication for nine years hard work. Without the Goldenplec team, we most certainly would not have had the year we had.” The site, which consists of around 30 contributing writers and 10 photographers, finally landed the award following two previous unsuccessful nominations. The local lad, went on to insist that this is just the beginning for the team of musical enthusiasts at Goldenplec.“We want to progress the features and interviews on the site and hopefully next year also be nominated in Best Online Only Publication too,” he concluded.
