Call For Smoke Free Playgrounds With the late surge in fine weather recently after an awful summer, playgrounds across the North County were full of families making the most of the Indian summer. In an effort to maintain this family centred focus of our parks, the County Council has decided to adopt a smoke free policy in all of our local authority controlled playgrounds. However, the antismoking signage has been displayed in only four playgrounds so far, namely Ardgillan Castle, Newbridge Demesne, Malahide Castle and Millennium Park in Dublin 15. The primary aim of the initiative is to discourage people from smoking in a children’s environment, to reduce cigarette litter, e.g butts and cigarette packages thrown on the ground in our parks. The Public Consultation Report revealed that “research was conducted in August 2010, prior to the initiative, to determine levels of second hand smoke in the playground. It also assessed the amount of litter from cigarettes and to gather information from playground users on their smoking behaviour, attitudes to smoke free policies and in particular banning smoking in the playground. This survey of 105 people showed strong support (87 per cent of respondents) for reducing second hand smoke in the playground. The highest number of cigarette butts observed around a single park bench was 27.” Many of the park users, who spoke to the County Leader found that the delay in making all public playgrounds smoke free areas was difficult to understand. At the County Council meeting on Monday 9th July last, the report on
By Patrick Finnegan the Public Consultation on Tobacco Free Playgrounds was presented to the elected members and adopted. Our local authority was the first in Ireland to formally adopt this as a policy and a council

spokesperson told the County Leader, “The next step for us is to erect signage at all our public playgrounds, and to use our website/social media and traditional communication channels to raise awareness of this policy. This will be happening over the coming weeks.”
“The signage is in place in our four regional public playgrounds at Millennium Park, Ardgillan Demesne, Newbridge Demesne and Malahide Castle for the moment, and will be rolled out to all of the 50 public playgrounds in Fingal. The Smoke-Free Playgrounds are selfpoliced,” she said. When the County Leader paid a visit to Newbridge Demesne on a beautiful early autumn evening, the playground was full of families enjoying themselves. There were ‘No Smoking’ signs inside the playground, but a playground user pointed out to us” that there were no signs outside the playground to alert smokers as they approached the playground. She felt that this would constitute adequate signage that smoking was prohibited in the playground.” Noel Costello from Swords uses the playground on a regular basis and was enjoying playing with his granddaughter. “I think it’s a very worthwhile project. Neither I nor any of my family members smoke, and I think it would make a big difference to me if smoking were allowed here.” It’s a great environment and I really enjoy it,” he said. Given that there is no legislation to control smoking in playgrounds and that it is a self policing project, the County Leader spoke to Park Ranger at Newbridge, Ilya Usanov, who said: “If I saw someone smoking, I would approach the person and ask him/her to refrain from smoking. That’s all we can do with the current legislation. If the person became difficult, I would report it to my manager and then, perhaps the Gardai. Some people have approached me about smoking in the playground and I have spoken to the persons and the problem was solved without any incidents,” he said. Many parents and park users feel that proper signage outside the playgrounds, at the entrance, would be sufficient to deter smokers from lighting up. Speaking at the launch of the second tobacco free public playground at Rivermeade earlier in the year, Dr Nazih Eldin, Head of Health Promotion HSE Dublin North East said, “Parents and adults are the most important role models for children and supporting people not to smoke around children indoors and outdoors is one of the clearest messages we can give our children.”
North County Towns Do It Again! It was yet another wonderful year for our Tidy Towns contestants, as the results of the 2012 competition were released last Monday. In a glittering ceremony at the Helix Theatre, both Skerries and Malahide retained their Gold medals. Skerries, with a score of 306, improved their points by three and were only six points behind the overall winner, Abbeyshrule, Co Longford. Similarly, Malahide, with 293 points improved their score by two points from last year. Lusk, who came third in the county, improved their figure by an
impressive five points from last year, with an excellent 277 points. There were good performances by Balscadden, up by five points to 257, with new entrants, Ballyboughal scoring an impressive 255 points. Other areas that bettered last year’s positions included, Swords, with 264 points, up five and Balbriggan, up a very impressive 10 points to 251 points. In fact, Balbriggan won the Dublin Endeavour Award, and Skerries landed the Dublin
Regional Award, so well done to the committees there. One of the highlights of the day was the nomination of John Flynn from Lusk Tidy Towns, in the new category of ‘Tidy Town Heroes’. John was one of 13 volunteers from across Ireland to be nominated. Another good performance was that of Rush who scored an impressive 234 points, up 9 points on last year.

It Just Keeps Getting Better For Catherine The great news from the Paralympic Games in London just keeps coming for Swords cyclist, Catherine Walsh and her pilot, Fran Meehan. The duo took bronze in the Women’s Individual Time Trial B at Brands Hatch. This is the second medal this duo has won at the Games. Last Sunday week, Catherine and Fran secured a silver medal in the para-cycling individual B pursuit final at the Velodrome. They clocked a time of 35:29.56 to secure their place on the podium. The Netherlands pairing of Kathrin Goeken and Kim Van Dijk took gold in 35:02.73 with the New Zealand tandem featuring Phillipa Gray and Laura Thompson taking silver with a time of 35:07.68. Despite being World Bronze Medallists in this event, the pair were not treating it as a priority event, and were not confident that the course would suit them. However, after their rest day they were able to put in a massive effort to come away with a Bronze medal. Fran Meehan commented, “We have a really strong team, and I think that’s what has moved us on, we support each other, share our advice, and it means we all improve.” President Michael D Higgins congratulated the Paralympians, when he said, “I want to sincerely congratulate our Team Ireland on their outstanding performance at the London Paralympic Games. This team has won 16 medals, eight gold, three silver, and five bronze; what a remarkable achievement.” “Our Paralympian athletes are inspirational role models for us all. Their courage, commitment and sporting prowess will live long in the hearts and minds of the Irish people. I look forward to meeting them in Áras an Úachtaráin in the near future and to congratulating them in person.” President Higgins also confirmed that he will host a reception for our Olympic athletes in Áras an Uachtaráin on Friday, 21st September. town in Ireland to their current position of 13th. The town was rated as ‘Cleaner than European Norms’ Chairperson of Swords Tidy Towns, Des Becton was particularly disappointed with the result. He told the County Leader, “Last year we came 2nd out of 54, just behind Trim, where we secured 10 A’s out of 10 sites. Swords had been deemed Ireland’s dirtiest town in 2005 and this result was the catalyst in resurrecting the Tidy Towns committee.”
“In IBAL, we have improved our position every year since. This is why this year’s result is so disappointing for us. It’s particularly disheartening to see that we missed out because of two privately owned sites that are out of our control.” said Becton. The report on these sites was particularly hard hitting. It said: “The two littered sites were both private car parks at the south side of the town, which appeared to be more concerned with clamping notices than the maintenance of the car park and the law should be enforced immediately against the operators.” Tourists landing at Dublin Airport are being greeted by littered approach roads, according to the latest nationwide survey by Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL). The study, despite showing continuing improvement in the cleanliness of our cities and towns, revealed the environs of our main airport to be a litter blackspot. While the
grounds of Dublin Airport were found to be “immaculate”, the roads surrounding it were spoiled by dumping, casual litter and “all manner of rubbish” according to An Taisce. Over 50 per cent of overseas visitors to this country come through the Airport. With the local authority admitting to cleaning the roads only once a year, IBAL is calling for adequate cleaning schedules for key routes used by visitors to be made public.

Happy Reunion: Luke and Anna O'Herlihy and their grandmother, Marie Smyth are delighted to be reunited with their dog, Bubbles at home in Swords.
Bubbles’ Long Walk Home The happy smiles on the faces of the O’ Herlihy kids (Anna 12, Luke 4 and Kate 2) of Rathbeale Crescent in Swords are because they have been reunited with Bubbles, their 15 year old family pet. The family were on holidays last week with mother Anne Marie, grandmother Marie Smyth and extended family members. Bubbles stayed with friends in the Holywell area. Unfortunately, he escaped through an open front door into an area he didn’t know. Grandmother Marie said ‘Bubbles is very much a house dog. He potters about the back garden- he is rarely out the front and never out of the estate unless in a car.’ The dog sitters searched for Bubbles but had no joy. The family were heartbroken on their return on the Sunday.
Luckily, local dog-lover, Adrianne Moore was driving home along the Feltrim Road when she spotted a lost looking Jack Russell in the middle of the road. ‘”I had to swerve to avoid him,” she said. Adrianne took the dog to Lissenhall vets, but unfortunately Bubbles wasn’t chipped or name tagged and the vets said they would hold him for three days before sending him to the pound. Adrianne notified the Gardai and started a Facebook appeal. Her family also put up posters in the area. On Thursday morning, a neighbour spotted the poster and Bubbles was reunited with his delighted family hours before he was due to go to the pound. “We won’t let him out of our sight again,” says Marie. “I can’t believe he walked so far. Thank God for all the lovely people in the area, it really strengthens your faith in a caring society.” Anna (12) declares happily “Bubbles might only be a dog to others, but he’s part of our family.”

The 25 year old writer and journalist from Swords deals with many challenges as a result of having mild Cerebral Palsy, but is keen to point out that she doesn’t feel this is a negative aspect of her life. It has, she says, had the opposite effect. “I’m a very positive person by nature, so I think having the various challenges (big or small) as I do, simply makes me work harder to achieve my goals.” It seemed a natural choice to talk to one of our own County Leader journalists about her experience in what is said to be an extremely tough industry to break into before taking into account anything else. “I think at first, I was slightly conscious of my career choice, given that it can be a very active job and I won’t be running a marathon anytime soon, but ultimately, writing was the only thing I could ever see myself doing. I’ve been working with the County Leader since May last year and all the staff have been nothing but understanding. It really makes your job so much easier when you’re in such a positive environment. I’m learning all the tricks of the trade from them, so I owe them a great deal!” Jennifer has had a love of writing from a young age, going back to her early school days. “I was always writing something or other in little notebooks, whether it was short stories or poems. Then in secondary school I had a fantastic English teacher, Mr Clarke, who was always very encouraging.” She then went on to study Journalism in college for four years, which she says gave her a real taste of how interesting and tough it was going to be to succeed once she left. “All the lecturers were very encouraging, particularly where I was concerned, but at the same time, things weren’t glossed over; you knew you were going to have to sink or swim to make it.” She says it’s this attitude that she took on board when it came to applying for jobs: “The media is very cut throat as it is and there are fewer jobs out there than there ever have been, so I knew I was going to have to work extra hard to make it, but I love a good challenge and never thought that having the mild CP would affect my getting a job. I really think that my skills should speak for themselves at this stage.” One of her greatest achievements to date was graduating with her honours degree. “It wasn’t just about the hard work it took to get it. I really owe so much to my parents for their support while I studied, I couldn’t have done it without them, so I was so happy to receive the degree because if nothing else, I knew it would make them proud.” “I did things the hard way,” she continues. I
Community & Leisure Centre Ltd. The North County’s very own Donabate Portrane Community & Leisure Centre has achieved the Excellence Ireland Quality Association (EIQA) award for leisure centres. This is just their second time to enter for this award, having entered for the first time two years ago. Last year and this year, the centre received the accredited EIQA Award and was shortlisted for the National Awards.
Best wishes to Donabate Portrane Community Centre from worked on various internships, free of charge for a year once I left college, just to get my work out there. Then once I got to working with the County Leader and gained my experience, I found things got a little easier.” Jennifer works in Print, Online and Digital media and feels that success stories come from those that are a ‘Jack (or Jill) of all trades’ Journalist. “You have to be able to offer your Editor more than one set of skills nowadays I think.” She says that her CP is a complex thing to try and explain, as there are so many different types and no two people are ever effected in the exact same way. But it is for the most part, met very positively by those she meets. “People are usually very positive about it and any other reaction is simply to do with a lack of understanding, so I just don’t let it bother me. In the simplest terms, it’s only my walking and balance that are slightly affected, so it just means my energy runs out quicker than that of the average person. ” The young Journalist clearly has a glass is half full attitude to life and credits her mother Annette, in particular with this: “My entire family and friends are wonderful, but it’s my mother who gave me my positive mentality. She always (and to this day still does), encouraged me to be myself and has always told me that anything I want to achieve can be done. I’ve always felt that the majority of my achievements are down to her and firmly believe I wouldn’t be were I am today without the never ending support of my family.” Family is clearly very important to Jennifer. She says she gets her love of both writing and movie obsession from her dad, Thomas and is equally close to her identical twin sister Lucy and younger brother Thomas Jr. “They’re all like my support network! My life is made easier thanks to them.” Jennifer also regularly attended the Central Remedial Clinic since she was two years old and can’t speak highly enough of all the staff: “The CRC are absolutely fantastic. The entire team is dedicated to helping you in whatever way they can so that your quality of life can constantly be improved. As work has taken over I don’t attend as much as I used to, but I know they’re always there if I have any issues. It’s a constant team effort, that requires equal amounts of hard work from the parents and staff.” Aside from writing, she loves film, music and travel and is always looking for new challenges. “I’ll always want to better myself in every aspect of my life, but for the time being, I just want to keep writing as much as possible.”
“I’m a very positive person by nature, so I think having the various challenges as I do, simply makes me work harder to achieve my goals.”

was the crowning moment of another wonderfully successful year for Happy Days School of Performing Arts. Director of “Pentecost” Peter McDonald said "I'm really proud of Pentecost and everyone's work on it. I hope that the nomination will create new opportunities for all involved." As well as “Pentecost”, Happy Days students have also appeared in
many other films this year, such as the multi award winning RTE series “Love/ Hate”,“Raw”, the TV mini series “Titanic” and more. All the achievements they’ve had this year has led to lots of interest and an increase in demand for places in the school that offers fun-filled classes in Speech and Drama, Dance, Musical Theatre and Singing from fully qualified, enthusiastic
and encouraging teachers. Happy Days are now offering classes on Saturdays as well as Fridays in their venue in Swords. All this in addition to offering a limited number of new places in their classes in Ballyboughal and Lusk. Parents To Consider School Lunch Boxes North County parents are being urged to ask children how much time they have to eat their lunch. The EPA’s Stop Food Waste Programme is encouraging all parents to do their homework when getting their children ready for back to school. With children now back to school all over the North County, they are calling on parents to start the school year with a clean slate and rethink how to plan and prepare their children’s lunches. Throwing away uneaten lunches is a waste of money but luckily, the Stop Food Waste programme has put together some tips for parents on
how to avoid food waste when it comes to school lunches, and save money in the process. They suggest the following tips: Let your kids be part of the lunch planning process. This will ensure that what you prepare is something they like to eat. Consider making a list of food your child likes to eat for lunch. This list can be kept on the fridge and can be added to by your child. Small sized fruit are a great idea as they cut back on waste and pose less of a challenge to small children and take less time to eat. Instead of throwing away dinner leftovers, reuse them for lunches the next day. Pack drinks in reusable containers and send a small amount to school in a reusable container with your child each day. Finally, before offering your child an after school snack, check to see if they have finished their lunch.

North County Parents Urged To Be Vigilant National charity, the Meningitis Trust, is issuing a warning to North County parents, as children start back at school for the autumn/winter months. The end of September sees the start of the peak season for meningitis, so the charity is urging all parents, students and teachers to be vigilant of the signs and symptoms. While children under five are most ‘at risk’ for meningitis, teenagers and students are the second most ‘at risk’ group (aged 15 – 23 years). It is estimated that 10 per cent of the population carry the organism which causes meningitis, but this increases to up to 30 per
cent for teenagers and young people. The risk of meningitis increases during the colder months, as people spend more time indoors, closer to others; meaning germs are spread more easily. Fighting common infections like colds and flu weakens immune systems, leaving them more vulnerable to the disease. The symptoms of meningitis can include fever with cold hands and feet, vomiting, headache, stiff neck, dislike of bright light, joint or muscle pain, pale blotchy skin, drowsiness and confusion. In babies, a dislike of being handled, an unusual cry, rapid

breathing and bulging fontanelle. Both adults and children may also have a rash that does not fade under pressure. Symptoms can appear in any order and some may not appear at all. If concerned, seek urgent medical attention.

Third Age Fun Run At Malahide Castle Back by popular demand, the Third Age 5k Run is back at Malahide Castle on Saturday, 22nd September. Registration from 10 am, with the race starting at 11am. This year there are special additional categories, like prizes for teams with three family generations. There’s a special ‘Golden Cone’ award - anyone can be the recipient for doing something memorable on the day. Finally, there are spot prizes too for fancy dress and all families and children are welcome to participate in this! All money raised goes to Senior Helpline, the national phone helpline for older people provided by trained older volunteers. Callers really value talking to someone their own age, and over 10,000 older people phoned last year. So why not join Dr Eva Orsmond from Operation Transformation to run, jog or walk for Senior Help Line, a Third Age programme. Every €10 raised allows a volunteer to spend 20 minutes with another older person who just needs someone to talk to and to listen.

Concern Over Home Help Packages The recent controversy over possible cuts by the HSE to home care packages and home help hours, has sent a shockwave of fear through the local community. Health Minister, James Reilly has decided that the cuts were never going to happen, however many carers may have cause to question this. Many residents rely on this service provided by the HSE and are fearful of any changes to what is
regarded as a life saving service in many cases. North County Leader will examine the effects that cuts would have on people who rely on these services, now or in the future. If you have doubts of fears, we would like to hear from you, whether you are a carer, or a service receiver from the HSE We look forward to hearing your story. HOROSCOPES AQUARIUS
Jan 20 - Feb 18
Opting out of conflicts won’t be easy. You want to defend others and stand up when circumstances become unfair. However, this is a week when even your most straightforward statements could be misunderstood.
PISCES
Feb 19 - Mar 20
View this week as preparation for the extraordinary opportunities that will come at the month’s close, and you can even feel positive about challenging encounters. Time prepare the mind and body for what is to come.
ARIES
Charity Tractor Run In Naul As part of the Naul Harvest Festival, there will be a Tractor Run on Sunday, September 16th at 11.30pm. The Tractor Run is being held in aid of St. James Cancer Unit, the IRFU Charitable Trust. In previous years, the runs have always been a great success and this year is sure to be no exception. The Heineken Cup will be making an appearance and there will be a raffle on the day also. Prizes for the raffle were kindly donated by local businesses. Tickets, priced at €20 are on sale now around Naul village. It promises to be a great day out and it’s all for a good cause, come come along and join in the fun.
Mar 21 - Apr 20
Since you can’t avoid the minefield of conflicts indicated, you may as well use the opportunity to tackle persistent issues. However, do bear in mind that even ordinary situations could become confused right now.
TAURUS
May 21 - Jun 20
If ever there was a time when addressing issues both swiftly and with uncompromising clarity was vital, it’s during this week. The difficulty, however, is that you’re uncertain about your priorities and past decisions.
Cancer
Jun 21 - Jul 22
Your reaction to the bad behaviour of others depends more on the nature of the damage that they’ve done than how much they’ve upset you. What’s tricky, however, is that you want to be direct but not alienate them.
Leo
Jul 23 - Aug 23
As far as you’re concerned, the faster you settle misunderstandings - the better. However, hastily made arrangements could lead to more misunderstandings - and that is what you don’t want right now.
Virgo
Aug 24 - Sep 22
The more direct you are about both your desires and your concerns, the better. In some cases, you’re concerned that such bluntness would annoy others. However, their reactions make it clear that they take you seriously.
Libra
Sep 23 - Oct 22
The most important thing for you to keep in mind during this week is that most of what’s involved is nothing more than opinion. If you start to justify yourself to other you could lose your perspective. Stick to your views.
Oct 23 - Nov 22
Tackle all unexpected twists that will arise this week one by one, and you soon reduce them to manageable tasks. Better yet, conquering them banishes worries that have been both persistent and worrying.
Sagittarius
Nov 23 - Dec 21
Patience has never been your strength, but developments force you to either slow down or turn things over to others. While initially annoying, you will become wholeheartedly involved - and delight with the results.
Capricorn
Have A Plan Making a plan before you start is a wise move. Start by writing all the things you would like to do in the home and then prioritise them. If this means starting with the cheapest improvements then that is the way to go. A fresh look to your windows can be created by adding new blinds or having your current ones reversed. The window is one of the main focuses in a room and by having it looking good it can give a different look and feel to any room. Flooring can be ready to change this time of the year after the bad weather we have had. Replacing floors is a job that can really give a huge new look to a room or hallway.

30th School Reunion In Malahide It’s getting close now. Judge this week by its unfair dilemmas, and you’ll decide it is a total write-off. Indications are that you’re blamed for problems not of your making, and others speak out of turn. Note all for future reference.

Recent events were both unsettling and exciting, forcing you to neglect matters from finances to issues with loved ones. But these can no longer be ignored, and you’ll find yourself having to deal with the consequences.

Spot The Difference It is difficult to tell which is the most confused after a Dalmatian dog adopted a lamb with a spotty coat. The black and white lamb was born at a dog breeder’s farm in South Australia. After being rejected by his mother he was quickly adopted by dog Zoe and the pair are now inseparable. Now the spotty lamb happily follows her around the farm and even sleeps inside the dog kennel.
Hockey Club It is the start of a new season for Skerries Hockey Club. The club has gone through a difficult time as a result of the recession and so on, but things are looking up for the group as they had a large turnout of over 120 juniors recently. They are always eager to welcome new members and would encourage not-so-new members to become involved again. For further information, contact club chairperson Dean Robinson on 0872462915.

But to give your kitchen a new feel you don’t need to spend lots of time and money on a big project. Here are a few creative ideas that can help change your kitchen; Clear the counter space. Install an under-the-counter microwave, can opener, spice rack or toaster. Also, take advantage of wall space and shelving for storing items that might otherwise end up on the counter.

2,000 Reasons To Visit Millfield Shopping Centre This Weekend Millfield Shopping Centre in Balbriggan is set to become a hive of activity on Saturday next, 15th September. The reason for this is that this progressive centre will present it’s second Fashion Show to an eagerly awaiting public. If it is anything like as good as the first one, then it will be well worthwhile. The Fashion Show will take place from 2pm until 3pm and, as a lead up to the main event, there will be music in the Mall from 1pm through to 4pm. And just so the kids are not left out, there will also be a face painter there for them to have fun Another highlight of the day will be the pulling out of the winning ticket for the €2,000 prize, which will be used towards paying the utility bills for some lucky winner. This very desirable draw was hugely successful and generated much attention and excitement. This will take place directly after the Fashion Show at 3pm. The eagerly awaited Fashion Show will feature Millfield stores, Vero Moda, Only, Jack and Jones, Vila, Name It, all of whom will be giving a 20 per cent discount from 2pm until 6pm on the day. Tesco Clothing Department and Baby Bump will also be part of the show. Hair and Beauty requirements for the models will be provided by Boston Beauty. Centre manager, Peter Carey told the County Leader: “We’re happy to be holding our second Fashion Show this year, showcasing the Autumn range of clothes on offer at Millfield, Balbriggan.” This is just part of a range of activities which Millfield Shopping Centre will be holding in the coming months.
