Balbriggan Students Cooking Up Success A group of Fourth Year students from Loreto College in Balbriggan have been hard at work on their fourth year projects, and have progressed through to the Semi-Finals of the SEAI (Sustainable Energy Authority Ireland) competition. The group, consisting of students Emily Purtell, Julie Hamilton and Emily Reilly based their project on energy efficient cooking and the importance of using local produce and seasonal fruit and vegetables.

By Jennifer McShane Speaking to the County Leader, the girls said they want to highlight their campaign to emphasise the importance of buying local produce: “ We want to encourage people around the North County to start using the produce around them to support the local farmers, and reduce the carbonfootprint. It is very important for people to know what vegetables are in season and take advantage of the

wonderful fruit and vegetables that are available in their area. We’re really excited about the competition.” The students recently met up with Trevor Sargent who was thoroughly impressed with their project. They presented Trevor Sargent with the calendar that they designed, promoting seasonal produce with relevant recipes. We wish the girls the best of luck in the competition. Also, keep an eye out for another Fourth Year group from the school

A group of ten students and four teachers from Fingal Community College in Swords, have recently returned from what they feel was the “Trip of a Lifetime.” The students and teachers visited Nansana in Uganda where they worked with ‘Nurture Africa’ for two weeks. The ten students; Rebecca Cooney, Calvin Dooney, Claire Fox, Andy Savage, JJ McCormack, Michael Hayton, Ciara Masterson, Saroja Bhanderi, Scott Gaughran and Eddie McLoughlin, were accompanied by teachers Mairead O’Halloran, Eamonn Burke, Eimear Mullin and Claire Scanlon. While in Uganda students and teachers assisted the work of ‘Nurture Africa’ by participating in building projects on the charity’s recently opened Paediatric Clinic. The students also assisted teaching in Ugandan classrooms where their

teaching skills benefited 776 Ugandan children over the twoweek period. They provided Maths, English, Literacy and Pronunciation lessons as well as enhancing Ugandan children’s’ educational experience through Music, Dance, Art and Sport. “We visited children supported by Nurture Africa in their homes, where we witnessed first hand the challenges faced by children living with HIV and extreme poverty,” said the teachers. “The Uganda adventure also gave us all the opportunity to visit the Equator, where the

The volunteers would like to extend a huge thanks to all who sponsored the group. They also wish to thank those who donated clothes, books and toys as these were greatly appreciated by the charity. This trip would never have become a reality without the belief and hard work of Fingal Community College teacher Claire Scanlon. All the students and teachers wish to thank her wholeheartedly, as it certainly was an experience of a lifetime which they will never forget.

New Initiative For Skerries Tidy Towns Skerries Tidy Towns launched their second annual ‘Adopt-a-Patch’ new litter initiative campaign at Supervalu Skerries on Wednesday 7th March last. Keen to build on their great record in the competition, the Tidy Towns committee are looking for new and existing volunteers. Volunteers will be asked to adopt a patch of land and keep it litter free. The patches of land, to be adopted, are on display on a large map near the exit doors in Supervalu Skerries. Big areas can be divided between a number of volunteers and cleaned at a time that suits you.

By Peter Kearney While you are asked to “get your hands dirty” you won’t really have to do this as gloves, bags and litter pickers are all generously provided. Afterwards the County Council will collect the full bags from convenient points. Those who are interested and can spare simply an hour or two each week can contact Frances Owens or Breege Madden of the Tidy Towns Committee. Great Night For Balbriggan Guide Dogs The Balbriggan Guide Dogs hosted a very successful ‘Cheese and Wine’ evening in the Bracken Court Hotel recently to highlight the many ways volunteers can get involved in support of their work. More than 50 people turned out to support the event. Many new volunteers signed up to help out at some of the many activities planned for the coming year including walking in the Balbriggan St. Partrick’s Day parade, the Garristown Tractor Run and many more to come. Present on the night were Tom and Breege O’Neill who founded the Balbriggan Branch back in 1985. Tom spoke of how important puppy walkers are and without volunteers to help with these puppies they would not have their mobility or freedom. “Without fundraising volunteers, Breege and I would not have the mobility and freedom we currently enjoy through our guide dogs. Landscapers Pave Way To Success

Local Landscape Specialists, Virgoe McEnery Landscaping, held a successful three day exhibition in AIB, Santry, recently. The family owned company, based in Balheary, used the event to launch exciting seasonal offers and garden tips, encouraging gardening enthusiasts to follow them on Facebook. The local lads hope to give away a number of free garden clean-ups worth up to the value of €300. Every new Facebook follower would be entered into a draw for the prizes, claimed landscaper Michael McEnery. Speaking to the County Leader,

AIB Assistant Manager, Garret Connolly wished the lads well, stating: “In such difficult times it’s important to support and further relationships with clients and potential ones too.” The company specialises in services such as lawn cutting, hedge trimming, fencing, power cleaning and even graffiti removal. Railway (in Bus Áras, Dublin),” he said. The €1.5m - originally donated to the refurbishing of Casino house - was left in the will of a local resident. The donation is conditional on the basis of the Railway being returned to the Malahide exhibit. The established trust had agreed the sale of the Casino for €600,000 before Dublin Tourism, now Failte Ireland, acquired the Model Railway in what they called a “public process.” They claim that it’s location in Bus Áras would “increase patronage” in the city centre but have admitted, significantly, that all options are being considered. Malahide Tidy Towns chairman, Gerry Rafferty, summed it up best stating: “The model belongs to Malahide and should be returned to Malahide.”

Council Expands Newbridge House Volunteers This summer the council hopes to expand its list of volunteer guides at Newbridge House after some legal issues with regard to insurance are sorted out. Prompted by a question from Cllr Anthony Lavin (FG) on the issue, the council explained: “A number of the volunteer guides are still active in providing guided tours of

Newbridge House. It is the intention of the council to build on this commitment and expand the role of the guides to include conservation, restoration and living history depending on the interests of the volunteers.” Currently a volunteer contract is being prepared to bring clarity and certainty to the role. This in turn will allow a proper insurance regime to be put in place. It is hoped to complete this process by late Spring and invite volunteers to become more involved in Newbridge House in early summer of 2012.”

Malahide Designers In Fashion Final Two Secondary School teams from Malahide have been selected to advance to the Eastern Regional Final of the ERP Junk Kouture Recycled Fashion Competition taking place on Sunday, 18th March. The competition, in its second year, sets the challenge to budding fashion design secondary school students to rework trash and other already used materials with the aim of crafting them into high-end couture fashion. The event, taking place in the

Crowne Plaza Hotel, Blanchardstown, hopes to further the recycling of electrical waste. Speaking to the County Leader, ERP Junk Kouture co-ordinator, Elizabeth O’Donnell said: “We were delighted with the level of interest. ERP Junk Kouture is a fantastic platform to educate students while giving them an outlet for their creativity.” The competitors are Malahide Community School students Hannah Bowles, Bebhinn Sheridan, Caitriona McGovern and Aine Duffy. Also taking part are Kim Nguyen, Alyssa Penrose and Leanne Bickerdike from Scoil Losa, Malahide.

Balbriggan Receives Award Nomination Balbriggan’s Public Realm Plan has gained national recognition with a nomination for the consultants working on the project in the prestigious Irish Planning Institute Awards. The aim of the plan is to transform the centre of the town into a place buzzing with commercial, social and cultural activity. LOCI along with the County Council in partnership with Balbriggan Town Council, the Heritage Council and Balbriggan Chamber of

Commerce prepared the Public Realm Plan for Balbriggan and called it ‘ The Heart of Balbriggan’. Public participation was a key part of the process and the local community was invited to participate throughout the making of the plan. The Balbriggan Public Realm Plan will act as a guide for future public space projects and proposals for Balbriggan. It will also be a resource for local groups and organisations to support their own plans and projects. The Heritage Council introduced the concept of Public Realm Plans (PRPS) in 2006 and is sponsoring the development of public realm plans in historic towns throughout Ireland.

An Extraordinary S Swords For many people, a trip to the supermarket is a mundane, daunting and forgettable experience that is dreaded by most people. A clinical, functional environment, interspersed with elevator music awaits you. However, there is one exception to this rule and it comes in the shape of JC’s Supermarket on the Rathbeale Road in Swords. This iconic shop, which was opened by legendary retailer, JC Savage is utterly different to your usual ‘run of the mill’ trip to the supermarket. They have been serving the grocery and shopping requirements of people from the greater North County area, and Swords in particular, since 1977. The fact that it is a local shop, managed by a local family who have deep rooted connections to the community, and their personal knowledge of their customers, often by name, is widely viewed as paramount to the continuing success of the supermarket The moment you enter JC’s, you are met with a unique atmosphere, where people are engaging in conversation in clusters and it resembles what you would expect in a busy market. This is where the community meets and you are immediately aware of an easy relationship between retailer and customer. You now realise that your

shopping experience will be very different and something quite special. The often quirky and humorous announcements will send customers scurrying to the fish counter or the wall of value, when extra bargains become available. This all adds up to the unique shopping atmosphere that only JC’s can provide. Managing Director, Michael Savage emphasised the fact that they are a local family run business, which suppor ts local produce and employs a local workforce. He said: “We are very proud of our connections with the local

Michael Savage, with Master Butcher, Malachy Griffin

community. Our Fruit and Veg section is a particular case in point and, where possible, we use local suppliers. This ensures that the product reaches our customers very quickly, without any air miles and other factors which affect the freshness and quality of produce, which affects other retailers.” Michael went on to expand on the company’s philosophy with regard to sourcing produce locally. “We have an excellent working relationship with all our local suppliers, including Keoghs of Oldtown, who provide us with top quality potatoes, Donnelly’s of St Margaret’s, who supply the finest fruit and vegetables and our salad bags, which are proving to be very popular. The secret is that we meet them personally, on a regular basis and any problems are sorted out to everyone’s satisfaction, there and then. This ensures that our ‘Farm to Fork’ policy is guaranteed. We owe this to our valued customers, “he said.

“We are the largest “truly” independent retail grocery outlet in Ireland. Our retail area is over 25,000 square feet and we have 21 checkouts for added customer convenience. We have an excellent selection of fresh produce and grocery all at exceptionally good value. We pride ourselves in providing our customers with big brands at low prices.” Many shoppers believed that, with the sad passing of JC, the end of this supermarket that we had come to know and love, was imminent. Nothing could have been further from the truth. It is clear that Michael and his family, including fellow directors Robert and Niall have applied the lessons that were taught by their late, much loved father. The friendly smile and welcoming demeanour of JC is evident in his family and has been passed on to other members of staff. “Since the loss of our father, our philosophy has remained unchanged. Accessibility and looking after our customers’ needs is, and always will be our foremost priority. In these difficult times, value and quality are of the utmost importance and we, at JC’s are acutely aware of this.” There is great excitement about an upcoming Car Draw in the store, with weekly prizes worth €1,000, eventually giving away a Renault Fluence Family Car. This project will last for about 8-10 weeks and will commence around mid-March. It is increasingly clear that JC’s stamp is on everything in the shop, even though he is only with us in spirit. Michael was quick to point out that, while value is hugely important, it can also be achieved in other retail outlets. “We have 17,000 different product lines on our shelves at any time, something which guarantees choice for our customers and no other independent retailer can match this level of choice and variety. We provide the best value, variety and customer service in North County Dublin,” he said.

Robert Savage, Michael Savage and Steven Dalton at the Customer Information Desk.

In each department of the shop, highly qualified professionals are at your service, with a smile and product knowledge that is second to none. Typical of this is the well stocked wine and beer section. Barry Savage has no peers, with his knowledge of the ever expanding wine section he is always willing to impart his vast knowledge to his customers. Most of the time, Barry can be seen advising on the latest Pinot Noir and pointing customers to where they can find real bargains. Michael explained how JC’s is able to provide the best value in wine. “We are flexible in sourcing wines from different suppliers and are in a position to negotiate deals which are beyond the reach of other buyers. JC always had

He told me that they come here every Thursday from Inchicore in search of bargains, and are particularly partial to the glass bottles of milk on sale. When you consider the distance through traffic from Inchicore to Swords, it speaks volumes about the kind of value, variety and ser vice provided by this excellent supermarket. From Dublin To Galway Now that I’m here in Ireland, I decided I might as well travel around the island. I’d heard a lot about the young and fun vibe in Galway and how breathtaking Cliffs of Moher are, so I went on a little weekend getaway with friends to the West. On the way to the cliffs we stopped to do some mountain hiking. When the guide said mountain, everybody started to look confusingly around trying to find those; especially the people from the Alps. Nevertheless, the view on the top of those hills was great;very rocky, green and loads of sheep - everything I ever really imagined an Irish countryside to be like. When we got to Cliffs of Moher I was absolutely

astonished. The weather being as sunny as it could possibly be and we could see everything. The views were astonishing. The last stop was naturally Galway. We got to experience the famous nightlife there which was great. Compared to Dublin, Galway seems different as it’s much smaller, but it’s still a very easy city to enjoy and especially, as the guide books say, it’s the place to go for Folk music. I also got to hear Galway Girl, from the film P.S. I Love You, which made my weekend complete.

North County Site Offered for Children’s Hospital Two North County farmers have offered Minister for Health and local TD James Reilly (FG) the possible lifeline of a free 200-acre greenfield site in which the embattled national children’s hospital could be developed. Located within close proximity to Dublin Airport, and lying adjacent to the M50, the proposal may prove to be a viable alternative to the recently rejected Mater site.

By Kieran Dunne In a letter addressed to the Minister, Fergus and Frank Connon – joint landowners of the site offered the location as having the potential to ‘speed up the hospital’s development.’ The site’s close proximity to the M50, M1, and the port tunnel make it an interesting proposition with regards accessibility. less than 7km from Swords, the North County’s capital. Speaking following the establishment of an independent review group, Dr Reilly indicated that all site options, such as the North County greenfield, were being considered. “Everything is on the table and we’re asking the review group to give us their best advice on what’s the best way forward,” he said. “(The greenfield site) would have certain advantages. You would be able to build 24 hours-aday if you were away from a built up area which we would presume, if you were a greenfield site, it would be.” However, Dr Reilly also conceded that the possibility of a new location may prove ‘challenging’ if the hospital was to be delivered before the government’s term. According to party colleague and local TD, Alan Farrell, it is an issue that needs careful consideration. “I’ve two main priorities,” said deputy Farrell. “One, to get the hospital built. And two, to have it done so in the right location.” “It’s a very difficult position for all of us. The (North County) site ticks a lot of the boxes in terms of transport, with it being right beside the M50,” he continued. “However, I would like to see planning issues left to the planners. It is an absolute priority for Ministers Reilly and Varadkar to have this hospital delivered.”

Changes In Local Bus Services Local Cllr Peter Coyle (Lab) has been informed by Dublin Bus that they intend introducing a new service timetable in April, which will bring significant changes to Malahide and Portmarnock. In early 2011 the company undertook the ‘Network Direct Project’, which involved consultation with the general public about their services. As a result of this review, Dublin Bus is now proposing to introduce changes to their services next month. Impacting on Malahide is a change to the 42 service. The terminus on the Coast Road will cease and the

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is the oldest and largest, voluntary, charitable organisation in Ireland. In the Society, too few people are trying to do too much. They need your help to help people in need and urgently need volunteers especially in the Rolestown and Oldtown areas. They are holding an open evening for new volunteers on Monday 2nd April in SVP House, 91/92 Sean McDermott Street. The SVP is involved in a wide variety of works in support of those in need which means there are

many ways in which you can give your time to help the Society. The sort of activities you can become involved in will depend entirely upon your own personal interests. Some activities the Society participates in are Home Visitation, Hospital and Prison Visits. The Society also has 34 Vincent’s shops spread throughout Dublin, Wicklow and Kildare. Volunteers generally give a couple of hours a week to their work so you can give as little or as much time as you want. This open evening will give people an opportunity to hear more about the work that they do and how they can help. All support is greatly appriciated.

much more. Speaking to the County Leader, festival MD Liz Kenny said: “The Festival will showcase work produced by gifted filmmakers from across Ireland and internationally. It will also put a spotlight on the burgeoning talents in the North County area.” Offering a platform for filming talent, the festival received an unprecedented numbers of entries from all over Ireland as well as many international submissions, from countries such as Brazil, Korea, Germany, Netherlands, France and Spain.

42 bus will all operate from the Sands Hotel, travel via Wendell Avenue, The Hill, Malahide village, and Seabury to the City Centre. Route 32/a/b will be amalgamated and operate as route 32 terminating in Malahide Green and operating via the Coast Road, Baldoyle and Raheny to the city centre instead. According to Dublin Bus, with the revised timetables, there will be an “overall improved service to their customers.” Speaking to the County Leader, Peter Coyle said: “Portmarnock residents will also welcome the more direct service on the 32 bus route.” The main reservations remain in Malahide. Although east Malahide will now be served primarily by an improved 32 bus service, the loss of the 42 in this area will make linkages to locations on the Malahide Road more difficult.

Band Night For Balbriggan Youths Balbriggan Youth Service’s first band night of the year took place in The Milestone Pub’s newly refurbished function room recently. Over 160 young people packed into the well known pub for this mid-term break celebration to see six local acts whip up a musical frenzy. Performers on the night were Lifeline, Ciarán Mackey, Lauren Walsh, Young Money, Amy and Lora and The Legs. Anyone who was there will tell you that one of the real successes of these band nights is the clear diversity present in terms of both performers and audience. It is a heart-warming sight to enter a room full of enthusiastic multicultural young people partying together and going wild for home-grown talent. This is peer support at its best. And in their first headline performance of their careers, The Legs made a statement of intent with watertight renditions of accomplished originals and cleverly chosen covers. They had the place absolutely hopping as the lights came up and really promise to be an exciting Irish band in years to come.

As the standard rebel, you don’t take kindly to being told what to do. And with so much cosmic emphasis on humanitarian issues, your thoughts this week will be on a different plane to those of your conventional peers.

Scorpio

Oct 23 - Nov 22

Some unfinished business will have to be dealt with before you can ease into what should be a relaxing period. Whether it is or not depends more upon your state of mind than any external influences.

Sagittarius

Nov 23 - Dec 21

If you are dissatisfied with your current status you will be in a position to do something about it after Wednesday. Until then you should simply keep your grievances to yourself and make the best of the situation.

Dec 22 - Jan 19

By Thursday you will come to realise that you have both the skills and support necessary to achieve a current goal - and on your own terms. Gone will be the need to conform to others’ expectations, when yours are better.

Participants from all over the North County have been training in preparation for the Fit2Go.ie challenge over the past few weeks. It all paid off in Balbriggan recently, where participants gathered to battle it out for the top prize! Every participant gave 100 per cent to the challenge and really pushed themselves, something that many remarked they would not have been able to do a few weeks ago. A big well done to everyone who took part and who have been training hard at the classes every week. Pictured here are the participents and trainers who were involved in the event.

Permanent Home For Malahide Bridge Club Just after celebrating their 25th Anniversary, it looks like Malahide Bridge Club will be securing a permanent home with negotiations advancing to lease the club council owned property at St Helen’s, Broomfield in Malahide. The lease is currently being drafted by the council’s legal department and will be forwarded to the club’s solicitor shortly. The news came in response to a motion from Cllr Eoghan O’brien asking council management to “report on the process to be put in place for a formal lease agreement for

Malahide Bridge Club and an estimated timeframe for completion of same.” The agreement will secure the club at its current location where it has continued to operate with only an informal arrangement with the council. Cllr O’brien (FF) said the club was anxious to put a formal agreement in place and he was glad to see that discussions had taken place between the two sides and that a lease was being drafted. “The sooner we get this sorted, the better and the bridge club will have more of a secure feeling,” he said. Cllr Joan Maher (FG) also welcomed the move and said that the building was a very much used facility and of benefit to the whole community.

Skerries Prepares For Soundwaves Festival The annual Skerries Soundwaves Festival will run from September 21st to 30th. Now in its 9th year and Organised by Skerries Community Association, its aim is to bring many different music genres and arts forms to the town. Events include a fantastic Lego Day for all enthusiasts, workshops,

Equinox celebrations with Fingal Mummers and a variety of concerts from pop and rock to singer/song writer. The classical highpoint of the festival is a Music Network concert in Holmpatrick Church. Other highlights will include a festival street party with a Rock Music trailer, street entertainment and fun for all the family, a street market, céilí after Sunday Mass, a night parade and spectacular fireworks in Skerries Harbour. More information about the festival lineup will be released in the coming weeks.

Psychology Talk In Swords You are invited to a public talk on March 15th titled ‘The Psychology of Health and Happiness’ at 7.00pm in the Carnegie Court in Swords. The Fingal Listening to Youth (FLY) Project have invited Psychologist Shane Martin to deliver a talk. Shane will discuss ways to enhance your quality of life, covering practical self-help strategies based on the latest scientific studies into overall health and happiness. Learn how thinking affects mood and how you can invest in your mental health through

evidence-based strategies that will help you become mentally stronger and more fulfilled in life. This community event is the first in a series of community-based lectures being organised by the FLY Project. FLY is a community based response to shared concerns amongst those working with young people in schools, youth projects and community and statutory agencies. The group aims to create an awareness of the connection between mental health and physical health and envisions safer communities where young people feel safe to talk about their well-being, without the fear of stigma. For this to happen, change is required within the family, in peer relationships, in schools and in the wider community.

Schools Encouraged To Get On The Greenwave Pupils from North County primary schools are being urged to get involved with Greenwave 2012, a mass science project that allows youngsters track the arrival of spring as it moves across the country. When viewed from outer space, it is said that a ‘green wave’ begins in the south of Europe in February and as the temperature rises, it moves up across Europe travelling at approximately four miles per hour; similar to the speed at which a human walks. Between the months of February and March, students are asked to log their sightings of six species; ash, horse

chestnut and hawthorn trees, the primrose, the swallow and frogspawn on the website. The project also caters for Gaelscoileanna, with materials available in Irish on the website. The project allows schools to investigate whether the timing of spring is changing by noting the swallow’s arrival and other identifiers of spring. Speaking to the County Leader, Programme Director at Discover Science and Engineering, Peter Brabazon said: “The Greenwave project offers students a hands-on experience in observing, measuring, classifying and recording the patterns of spring. I urge all primary schools around the North County to get involved with this exciting project and to play their part in recording the arrival.”

Opening hours at the Estuary Recycling Centre in Swords are to be almost trebled, the County Council have confirmed. The centre had originally been open to the public for 28 hours a week, with the increase now meaning an extra 42 hours being made available. Speaking to the County Leader, local Senator Darragh O’Brien (FF) welcomed the news, saying: “I have been informed by the County Council that it’s increasing the opening hours to 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday; and 8am to 6pm on Saturdays. This is very good news for the area. Previously the opening hours were restricted to Wednesday to Saturday from 9am to 4pm.” “There has been a massive increase in the number of people recycling household waste and the number of items being recycled since the Estuary Recycling Centre opened in 2006. Increasing the availability of safe and proper disposal is very important and I want to commend County Council for its work in this regard.” The centre is located beside Swords Business Park just off the Swords bypass.
