They were declared the winners of the prestigious ‘Community of the Year’ Award, at the ‘People of the Year’ ceremony. The community of Skerries rallied together in an extraordinary show of empathy and solidarity in the search for two fishermen, Ronan Browne (26) and David Gilsenan (41), who had gone missing at sea while out fishing on 1st April last. Charity Leg Wax The staff at well known Swords based Chartered Accountancy firm, McInerney Saunders, have been very active fundraising for the Jack and Jill Foundation. Last Friday, dubbed Feel Good Friday, the male members of staff underwent a leg wax for the worthwhile cause. The leg waxing, which took place at the company’s offices was undertaken by local beautician, Joan Donoghue from Peaches Beauty Salon. Managing Director, Gerry McInerney told the County Leader about how the company became involved with the charity. “We were prompted into it by a client with a very young daughter, Rose who has a condition that confines her to her cot. She needs 24 hour attention and is unable to communicate. She is supported entirely by family and friends, as well as the Jack and Jill Foundation.” “When we learned about Rose’s condition, we felt we wanted to support Jack and Jill. The staff ran a number of fundraisers in the office, including special lunches, breakfasts, bingo as well as other after hours activities.” The idea of having a leg wax was one that generated great excitement in the office. “The staff deserve great credit for the enthusiasm they have displayed in embracing the fundraising idea and the innovation they have shown,” he concluded.
Oh the pain of it all. Gerry McInerney from McInerney Saunders in Swords goes through the pain barrier, as he gets his legs waxed by Joan Donoghue from Peaches Beauty Salon, Swords. The charity event was held in aid of the Jack and Jill Foundation.

instructor, Dermot O’Keeffe took a group of nine people to train in the JKS Headquarters in Tokyo. The members got the opportunity to train with some of the world’s best instructors and their students. Despite the gruelling heat of the Japanese summer, 36 degrees in the shade, everybody trained hard and gained valuable experience. The visit included trips to Kamakura to see the giant Buddha and Nikko to see the original three monkeys shrine (Hear no evil, See no evil, Speak no evil) and lastly, they climbed to the top of Mt Fuji. This was a tough task, but everybody really enjoyed it. During their stay, they met some people from Fukushima, displaced since the time of the tsunami. Overall it was a fantastic experience and plans are underway to make this a bi annual event. Swords Karate club have recently moved into a full-time facility in Unit 8 Seatown Business Campus.

The Biggest Circulation Of was a very real danger to park users with no eyes or ears present in our parks.” The renewed calls come following the council’s confirmation that they are currently reviewing the decision to strip Swords of its park ranger services, a move which has left the Swords and Ward Rivervalley parks without any rangers. “Why is it that Swords has been targeted while other areas around the County still have their park rangers in place,” the councillor asked. In a statement to the County Leader, the council revealed that an undertaking has been given to review the current situation over the next year with any decision being based on this process. This, however, would mean that no park ranger is likely to be reinstated to Swords over the course of the next twelve months while the review takes place. Further calls of discontent are expected over the coming weeks with Socialist Party representatives looking to generate more awareness on the issue, which has seen an increase in anti-social behaviour and a number of attacks in both parks.

Trisha Wins Our Facebook Photographic Competition The extremely popular North County Leader weekly Facebook Photography Competition, concluded last week with the presentation of a camera to the overall winner. The competition, which was run in association with Pure Escape Beauty Salon, was launched on 22nd February last, was a huge success and attracted an impressive 200 entries. The overall winner was Trisha McCaffrey from Balbriggan, who was a very prolific supporter of the competition, having submitted numerous entries on a regular basis. Indeed, many people took a keen interest in the competition and sent in multiple submissions. Trisha was presented with a beautiful Nikon D3000 SLR Camera for her prize winning picture, which captured a fisherman heading off in his small fishing boat from Balbriggan on a day’s fishing. The judges felt that she managed to capture the scene perfectly, using the light level available in a clever way. Whilst the overall standard of photography was of the highest level, the judges took into consideration the high quality of the winning photo and the standard of the camera used by Trisha. The judges

examined the photographs taken against the quality of camera equipment used by the competitors and came to a balanced conclusion The camera she used was a small digital one, but the finished product was excellent, all things consid-
ered. “I can’t believe I’ve won this competition. I was out with my grandson and the tide was out and it was thanks to his persistence that I managed to get the photograph,” said a delighted Trisha. “I only had an ordinary, point and shoot camera and I’m thrilled to have won this competition, especially as the standard was so high. It’s lovely to be able to put up local photos, where people at my level of photography can discuss our photos,” she said. The winners of each weekly competition received a €100 voucher from Pure Escape Beauty Salon. Unfortunately, this salon is under new management and is now called Escape 21. However, the new management has agreed to honour the vouchers of those who have yet to trade them in.

A enjoyable social night took place after the prize giving. Pictured are captains, Pat McNeill Pic: JR and Pauline Byrne presenting the cheque to Clare McGinn.
They are the first recipients of the Beaver Chief Scout Awards in the North East Province and the first ever Chief Scout Awards in the Rivervalley Group. Speaking to the County Leader, acting group leader, David Batt, said: “It was a fantastic achievement for the scouts and a proud day for the 171st Rivervalley group.” The achievement comes following a number of projects which involved skill, physical, community and environment categories. Also completed were two scouting skill awards and an overnight activity which included
learning about different cultures- with the group enjoying a Vietnamese dessert prepared by leader, Assumpta Kennedy. Finally, the dedicated group completed their work with a 10km walking expedition over a six hour day with the girl group joining the club pack for the hike around Howth Head, while the boys did a coastal walk from Malahide as their part of the chellenge. The Chief Scout Awards are the ultimate achievement in scouting and take place across five different categories of Beavers, Scouts, Ventures and Rovers.

Ann Doyle - Skerries “Really delighted with the result and to be so high up, as we are only 7 points behind the overall winner and were up against some big names in tourism, is no mean feat. We would like to thank all the volunteers, the community of Skerries and the County Council who do such good work”
Ken Duffy - Swords “We are delighted with our performance. Swords had been designated as a litter black spot, but has now come on in leaps and bounds. We have improved year on year and this is our best result to date. Great thanks is due to all the volunteers and committee for their great work. Thanks is also due to Conservative Fingal, The Chamber of Commerce, the County Council and local businesses for their efforts.”
Pat Kelly - Lusk “We are delighted to have gone up 10 points and to have achieved the level we achieved and of course winning a prize of €500 is just rewards for the efforts of all. The local National School also deserves a mention for winning their 3rd Green Flag”
Blaíthín O’ Donnell - Donabate “We are delighted with our increase of five points particularly as we faced a number of challenges with a large amount of construction in the area. Gerry Rafferty - Malahide “We’re overjoyed with attaining the Gold medal. The Tidy Towns committee would like to thank the business community, the County Council, the local Chamber as well as the Gardaí who were all instrumental in achieving this gold medal and scoring some serious points. Swords Girl’s Got X-Factor By Kieran Dunne Swords girl, Megan Burke, looks on the road to a hugely successful career in the music industry, following an incredible X-Factor audition in Cardiff recently. The impressive vocal was enough to gain four yes votes and advance through to boot camp, with Destiny’s Child superstar, Kelly Rowland proclaiming “Wow, we’ve found ourselves a star.” Megan, aged 19, performed Daniel Merriweather’s ‘Red’ to the four X-Factor judges and a 3,000 plus strong crowd at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. She had previously advanced through a rigourous regime of preliminary auditions before performing to the celeb panel. Speaking exclusively to the County Leader, Megan describes the wonderful experience of performing to four of the most successful artists of modern times: “It was so weird and really like an out of body experience to walk out on the stage and Pictured here is X-Factor know you’re standing in front of Kelly Rowland, Gary contestant, Megan Burke Barlow, Tulisa and Louis Walsh. When I got the four yes votes I could have died happily there and then. Regardless of how far I go, at least I know that I will always have that moment.” Megan had been performing in the Cardiff stages of the competition, yet to air, having brought along family and friends for the special occasion. “Without Back Street Dance Studio in Swords, I wouldn’t really be anywhere. It was here that I realised that I actually wanted to sing. My manager and Studio owner, Nikki, is behind all that and she has really pushed my confidence levels up through her support,” said the talented Swords girl.

Belgian Travel Agents Sample Delights Of Malahide A group of travel agents who sell the holiday programmes of leading Belgian tour operator, Gallia were in Ireland last week. They were here to check out some of the many things to see and do on a short break or holiday here. Their visit, organised by Tourism Ireland in conjunction with Fáilte Ireland, included a tour of Malahide Castle, lunch at the Grand Hotel, an evening at the Abbey Tavern in Howth and some free time to explore the village of Malahide.
Danielle Neyts, Tourism Ireland’s manager in Belgium, said: “We are delighted these travel agents took time out of their busy schedules to come and visit Ireland this week. For many, it was their first time here and they were extremely impressed by our wonderful scenery, the wealth of historic and cultural attractions, as well as by the hospitality and friendliness of the people they met. Familiarisation visits such as these are extremely important as they help the travel agents to know exactly what we have to offer potential Belgian holidaymakers; the aim is that when they return to their offices they are better equipped to advise their clients on future travel plans and trip bookings.”

North County Schools Hit By SNA Cuts Contiuned from page 1 If there’s more than one pupil in need of attention it then falls to the teacher to help which in turn affects the whole class.” The devastating results of the cutbacks are having a major impact on schools and families across the North County, with already streched resources being further tightened. Following on from a recent local meeting, held by Clare Daly TD, local schools are now believed to be weighing in behind ACE who are arguing that every pupil deserves an equal opportunity in education. Principal, Brid Mhic Gearailt from Scoil an Duinninigh, Swords, feels that
the importance of special needs assistance is as crucial as ever with everyone feeling the pinch from cutbacks. “There’s just not enough being done. We’ve been reduced to one SNA for our entire school which is not enough. She has to deal with pupils who may need full-time assistance while others are being left out. This, in turn, adds stress on the teacher who then has to step in which then has a knock on affect for everyone,” said the frustrated principal. A national protest against the cutbacks is taking place tomorrow, September 14, with all who are attending asked to meet at Central Bank for 4pm.
Swords Pavilions were delighted to be able to pass on €665 to The Marie Keating Foundation, following the successful Summer Barbeque held in The Wright Venue. The Marie Keating Foundation is Swords Pavilions charity of choice for 2011 and they would like to thank all those involved. Pavilions Centre Director, Ian Hunter is pictured handing over the cheque to Linda Keating from the Marie Keating Foundation.

Continued from page 1 for people to partake in a walk of solidarity and this grew to over 10,000. “People searched the headlands and rugged coastlines in a search for the men, and they came from all of the neighbouring coastal towns and villages, like Loughshinny, Rush and Balbriggan. The response was incredible,” he said. The bodies of the two men were finally recovered off the Co. Louth coast on 9th April. The award was, ”For showing the power of community spirit in the face of immense tragedy, and for providing unstintingly generous support to the two families affected, the community of Skerries was presented with the Community of the Year award. The award was presented by RTÉ broadcaster, Joe Duffy and accepted on behalf of the community by Martin Scully, President Skerries Chamber of Commerce and Ollie Grimes, Secretary Skerries Chamber of Commerce.

The 25th annual celebration of Swords Heritage, Art and Culture Week took place recently, with events being hailed a huge success. The week, organised by Swords Pride of Place in association with Swords Historical Society Ltd, was a fantastic success with County Mayor, Gerry McGuire (Lab), officially launching the celebrations. The launch followed on from an historical walk around Swords in which locals braved wet and windy conditions to take in some of the town’s oldest tales. Another feature of this year’s celebrations was the launch of the 18th edition of ‘Swords Voices’. The publication contains a host of Swords stories from an older generation right down to some relative newcomers who share what Swords means to them. The week’s prosperity is further evidence of the hard work Swords Historical Society has indulged in over the years. The group has been responsible for projects such as the opening of Swords Museum at Carnegie Library in 1987, the restoration of St Colmcille's Well in 1992, and also the Swords Castle restoration project. becoming well acquainted with his raft, we like to think that a decent preparation for the winter months can provide for a cosy alternative to the blistering cold ahead. Here we take a
look at some of those alternatives:
Sealing Windows and Doors While we all know of the importance behind a good heating system in our home, the exterior- such as windows and doors- are also vital commodities to any well heated house. Fortunately, there are a number of excellent window and door suppliers around the North County who provide these services through well equipped, cost effective pricing. Also, you can keep warm by plugging up draughty windows and doors with inexpensive insulation and draft stoppers, all available throughout outlets around the locality.
Preventing Heat Loss As mentioned above, the importance of eliminating those deadly draughts is an hugely efficient way to keeping in heat. Another way to ensure that you are not throwing money down the drain is to make sure that your attic is well insulated. This is a crucial element to retaining heat, as it rises, and is relatively cheap to correct if needs be. Rolls of attic insulation are easily gotten and can save money on heating bills providing that each layer is applied correctly.
North County Leader 13th September 2011
Furniture Layout Another way of beating off those winter blues is a bit of interior design and furniture relocation. You may be asking what this has to do with staying cosy but avoiding those cool breezes that creep in through the windows and under doors is vital. Try rearranging your furniture to stay warm. For example, if your favourite living room chair is in direct line of a draughty window you may consider moving it to a more comfortable location. Also, a fresh lick of warm, vibrant, coloured paint may provide the much needed cosy ambience.
Keep Home Fires Burning For those of us fortunate enough to have an open fire in our home, this is one of the most valuable heat generating options to possess due to the relative low cost of operating one. A number of suppliers throughout the North County ensure that a wide range of turf, fuel, coal and logs are available to keep that fire flickering deep into the cold, dark, lonely nights of winter.
