Lusk Mother’s Anger At Dublin Bus A

Lusk mother of two children who have Special Needs, has been denied entry on to a Dublin Bus in the past week, due to her refusal to fold her son’s special needs buggy. This is the second time that this has happened in the recent past and has caused her much anxiety. It seems that every time she uses a bus, there is an issue related to the buggy.
By Patrick Finnegan The County Leader spoke to Dublin Bus to get clarification about the situation regarding special needs buggies and was told by a spokesperson for the company: “Dublin Bus is committed to providing a service which is accessible to all. Dublin Bus vehicles have a dedicated space for wheelchair users, or any apparatus used by people with a disability as in the case of your reader. This space can also be used for a parent with a buggy which can remain unfolded in the wheelchair space if it is free.” The spokesperson continued, “Two standard size buggies will not fit into this space without infringing on the aisle. If a wheelchair user or person with a disability wishes to board when there is an unfolded buggy in the wheelchair space, the driver will ask the passenger to fold the buggy and either put it in the luggage space or keep it by their side safely. Wheelchair users have priority use of this space.” Suzanne Irwin, from Kelly Park in Lusk was told by a Dublin Bus driver that the buggy for her four year old son, Thomas was too big and that only one special needs buggy was permitted on the bus. As there was no other special needs buggy on the bus at the time, Suzanne is mystified as to why she was denied entry on the bus. As she does not have a car, she is totally dependant on public transport to ferry Thomas to Temple Street Hospital for his regular visits there. Thomas, who celebrated his fourth birthday last week, suffers from Severe Global Development Delay and needs round the clock care. He also
suffers from ADHD symptoms and Autism traits, as well as complex epilepsy. Her other son, Jason is eight and a half and suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome. As well as Temple Street Hospital, Suzanne also brings Thomas to an assessment centre in North Great George’s Street. She told to the County Leader that when she went to get on the bus in Lusk to bring Thomas to Temple Street, the bus driver stopped her in her tracks. “You’ll have to fold it,” he said. “I can’t,” was the reply. The special needs buggy is sometimes referred to as a wheelchair and is extremely difficult to fold. The Memorial Christmas Tree lights were switched on in Skerries on Saturday evening last outside St. Patrick’s Church on Strand Street. Fr. Richard Hyland, accompanied by the Anthem Gospel Choir and Martin Scully of Skerries Chamber of Commerce, performed the honours in front of a very large crowd. It was a truly festive evening and community occasion. The bitter cold did nothing to cool people’s spirits as they stayed for some time after to be entertained by the choir. The main street of Skerries looks very merry and inviting indeed and great credit is due to all who decorated it from the Obelisk right up to the Rush end of the town. The tree is a special way to remember those we lost this Christmas. No doubt Santa too will find it equally inviting and is sure to make a very special stop for all the boys and girls of Skerries.

As previously reported in the County Leader, the prospect of this proposed Monster Sewage plant being located in the heart of Ireland’s Market Garden has caused outrage in Lusk and all over the North County. Various protest meetings and charity nights such as this have taken place around the County and a further protest rally is due to take place in the coming weeks. The quiz participants paid €10 a table and thoroughly enjoyed the evening. All funds raised will go towards organising future Anti-Sewage events in the area.

Balscadden Fair Comes Up Trumps The annual Balscadden Christmas Fair took place recently and proved a huge success once again. The fair spectacularly raised over €5000 for two worthy local causes in the area. The fair took place at Balscadden Community Hall and was full of all kinds of goodies from local crafts, home baking, a bottle stall, lucky dip and much more. A large raffle also took place to draw in a crowd which enjoys lots of local support each year. The proceeds from the festive fair were shared between Balbriggan Community Hall and St Benignus School in Balscadden. A big congratulations goes to everyone involved for putting in the hard work and organising the fair and also to all the locals who so generously supported and contributed to the event.

Sewage Plant Protest Meeting In Malahide The controversy over the proposed Monster Sewage Plant being located in the North County moved south to Malahide on Thursday last.
Award Ceremony In Balbriggan Friends of Autism and ADHD held their fund raising Awards Ceremony on the 8th of December last. The ceremony held in The Town Hall Balbriggan was opened by the showing of the film Black Balloon at 6.30pm, followed by the ceremony. An impressive amount of almost €30,000 was raised and given to over 13 different

Balbriggan Youth Service. The Friends of A u t i s m / A D H D Balbriggan shop opened its doors three years ago and since then proceeds from their sales fund various different projects. The larger portion of their funds goes towards the position of Advocacy workers. They help and advise families of children and adults who suffer from Autism. /ADHD and any other disability. At present they have approximately 60 volunteers.

Swords Bridge Club celebrateed 40 years in existence in style recently. Celebrations were held in the Senior Citizens Centre in Swords. The club was founded in 1971 and although the club only secured a premises twenty years ago, the determination and dedication of the club’s members kept the club running. It was truly a great achievement and credit is certainly due to everyone who has enabled the successful running of the club. This special anniversary shows us the continuing strength of local groups around the area. The celebrations included a four course meal, refreshments followed by entertainment. The event was attended by four founder members along with the current President, Vice President and committee members and club members. A wonderful evening was had by all who attended and we wish the club continuing success in the future.

Swords Boxing Club Hits Out At Council Swords Boxing club has hit out at County Council management for blocking a €25,000 grant which would have provided for long overdue maintenance work to Carnegie Library, the club’s base on North Street. The Irish Boxing Association grant,
which became available through the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, would have provided for a heating system which is not in place, new floor boards and other much needed minor maintenance works. However, the local

Local TD Clare Daly (SP), having originally made the grant enquiry for the club, summed up the decision saying: “How could €25,000 which would improve the venue for uses that are not boxing specific, but would benefit the building even after the club has gone, and which have nothing to do with the structure itself, be a bad thing?” The club have been operating out of Carnegie Library as a temporary base for almost eight years.

Christmas Fun Run In Rush Rush is certainly is buzzing these days and not even the cold and bitter rain on Sunday 4th December last could do anything to stop that. Last Sunday was the Rush Chamber of Commerce’s Fun Run in aid of Tidy Towns and the Christmas Lights fund. Two races in one were held, a 5 K and a 10K. All sorts participated in
the event from serious runners, to family groups, to those doing it for personal reasons and just for fun. There was a big crowd and they were all in festive cheer with Santa hats and Christmas costumes a plenty. Needless to say the young boys and girls, and parents too by the looks of things, were still buzzing from Santa’s special visit to Rush the evening before. And word has it that he will still be around to see as many boys and girls in Rush as he can before the big day.

Balbriggan Christmas Festival kicked off last week, with so much happening on the Square from street performers, face painters, balloon artists, the Christmas market and festive music from St Patricks Brass and Reed Band. Santa arrived in his sleigh escorted by the Balbriggan Gardai, much to the delight of the waiting children, many who waited patiently in line to tell the man in red of the wishes and desires. Each Christmas, local writer Megan Wyne from Skerries, produces a booklet of short stories written by her writing students. This year, 56 children, teenagers and adults, who attended the creative writing classes in Skerries and Malahide have contributed stories for the booklet. The booklet is entitled ‘Dive into Stories.’ It costs €4 and all profits are going to Turn the Tide of Suicide, which the authors nominated as their chosen Snippet charity. The official launch of the booklet will take Flower place in Skerries Mill on Thursday 15th December Arranging at 5.15pm. Great Success Of Business Seminar On Thursday last, 8th December, the much anticipated McInerney Saunders Chartered Accountants ‘End of Year Business Briefing’ took place. This free, early morning event was held in conjunction with Fingal Dublin Chamber of Commerce, with North County Leader Newspaper as the media partner. This event was held at Movies@Swords in the Pavilions Shopping Centre and attracted a very large gathering of business people, both well established and start ups. ENGLAND New Course Prepares for Zombie Attack
Island View Hotel in Malahide hosted a Christmas lunch for Malahide Senior Citizens free of charge last week. This is an annual occurence and hotel manager, Ronan Kelly said that the "Senior Citizens are very loyal to the hotel and this is our way of saying thank you to them." A new course has opened up in England to train people against a zombie attack. The course teaches you how to use a pistol, grenades and a rifle. The main mission takes place in a warehouse where you must fight off zombies. Co-founder Richard Kershaw said “It’s not everyday that you get to fight off a warehouse full of zombies”

A great and successful night was had by all. The success of the night reflects the continuing prosperity of this fine golf club. Fantastic Season Of Sailing In Skerries Skerries Sailing Club has recognised another fantastic season of sailing at its recent junior prize giving event in the club house recently. The ceremony honoured all the junior sailors aged from 8 to 17 who took to the water during the year. A variety of prizes were given out on the night, some of the youngsters were rewarded for completing their first sailing season and others were presented with outstanding achievement awards. It has been a great season for all junior members and Skerries Sailing Club would like to offer their congratulations to all members for their achievements. The members represented the club at local, regional, national and international levels. We’re sure the club will continue to have great success when the sailing season resumes again next year.

The controversy over the proposed Monster Sewage Plant being located in the North County moved south to Malahide on Thursday last. The meeting was held in the Grand Hotel and was chaired by Jacqui McCrum, a Rush resident and member of Reclaim Fingal Action Group. Also in attendance were local representatives, Senator Darragh O’Brien and councillor Eoghan O’Brien, who both made contributions to the meeting. David Moore, a founder member of Fairshare Action Group from Donabate, which resisted the monster plant being located in
Donabate some years ago, spoke of the teamwork which is needed in the fight ahead. “This is not just about Rush, or Skerries or Donabate - it is about the entire North County area. If an accident occurs with this plant, then the entire coastline will be affected,â€? he said. Fairshare, as the name suggests is all about areas taking their fair share of the burden. The idea of a monster plant taking the waste from seven different local authority areas was not acceptable.â€? There was general agreement that the vast amount of money needed to build the plant, estimated at around â‚Ź2.5 billion, would be better utilised in upgrading the existing treatment plants in the area. This would be achieved at a fraction of the cost of building this monster plant and was seen as the way forward to solving the sewage problem.

There was a blow for unemployed people in Balbriggan recently, when the town was not included in the first round of tenders as a location for the delivery of FAS training courses. These courses are invaluable to local unemployed people, who learn computer skills and how to fill in a CV, as well as letter writing and other career changing skills. Sean Corrigan, General Manager of Balbriggan E n t e r p r i s e Development Group (BEDG), which provides the training courses, was particularly upset at the decision not to include Balbriggan as a venue for the courses. He told the County Leader: “We have eight people employed here and the bulk of our work is from people assessed by FAS. We are a FAS certified training company, which is a prerequisite. The course involving Information Technology has six courses, with three locations allocated to it. They are in Swords, Dublin City and Dublin 15.� Balbriggan is an area with a large unemployment problem and many of these would have availed of FAS

courses here. He continued, “The future of BEDG is unsure at the moment. Our role is to promote and develop the training function and to encourage and support enterprise in the community. FAS was asked if they can confirm that Balbriggan would be chosen to deliver courses, they could not do so. This will be an absolute disaster for people in Balbriggan if FAS does not provide training opportunities in the town,� he concluded.

Fury At Cutbacks To Local Garda Stations Local senator, Darragh O’Brien (FF) has described as totally unnecessary the extreme cutback in Garda services in North County Dublin. The cutbacks will see the closure of Rush Garda Station, with Malahide Garda Station’s operating hours being severely restricted. O’Brien said: “The 38 Gardaí working in Malahide Garda Station are serving over 25,000 people in Malahide, Kinsealy and Portmarnock. Santa Comes to Rush Rush switched on their Christmas lights with a very special guest last Saturday evening outside the Community Centre. Straight from the North Pole, just for the boys and girls of Rush, came Santa Claus himself. Sound asleep, he was transported up the Main Street and escorted by the Mounted Garda Unit. Outside the Community Centre he was awoken by the cheers of the on looking children. There was great excitement as he got out of his bed to greet the pupils from the national schools in the area. From there he made his way into his grotto where he will see all of the good boys and girls right up until Christmas. A spokesperson for the Department, having been contacted by the County Leader, refused to accept that the Minister should, at very least, meet with concerned locals –

However, local TD Clare Daly (SP) has hit out at the Council and the region’s Ministers, none of whom have attended any of the six public meetings, stating that: “Pre-election the now Ministers of the area gave a number of commitments to projects, also stating that they would represent the best interests of their constituents. Their silence, and lack of representation, on this issue is actually deafening.” An impressive tranche of final submissions have been made and were delivered to the Council by the
‘Reclaim Fingal’ action group Friday last, 2 December. It is not yet clear whether the planning stage of the project will be delayed following the Minister for Public Expenditure, Brendan Howlin, delivering a public commitment to having ‘the matter reviewed.’

Police Forum Meeting In Balbriggan Balbriggan Community Policing Forum held it’s last public meeting for the year recently in the Hamilton Hall. The meeting was chaired by Louise Butler from Balbriggan Community Policing Forum and the elections for the community representatives on the Balbriggan Community Policing Forum took place. As Balbriggan is divided up into six geographical areas, six seats were reserved for community representatives. Each of the six elected
representatives will take part in the shaping of policies in relation to community safety. Participants on the night raised various public issues and also expressed their concern regarding some antisocial behavior of teenagers who are breaking windows and vandelising different areas. “There are social responsibilities that parents have. New Extension For Balbriggan Community College Additional accommodation is to be provided for Balbriggan Community College with an extra 430 pupils. The additional numbers will bring the student population up to approximately 1,000 pupils. The Department of Education foresees pupil numbers rising in the town and has recognised Balbriggan Community College as a strong candidate to assimilate, cater and provide for the growth expected. There have been recent upgrades to the school, but now the news of a further building, consisting of specialist rooms to be added to the existing main building, is another boost for the college. These developments coincide with the start of work on a new school gym which will be of use to the whole community as a hub for all fitness and sporting needs. This increase in numbers, additional accommodation and facilities is great news for the area. The Community College is moving forward with a new purpose and commitment to achieving the best for the people of Balbriggan.
With Christmas just around the corner, the Fingal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) are asking all North County residents to take special care of their pets this festive season. The registered charity was founded in 2009 and all work is voluntary. The volunteers are a dedicated group of people who give up much of their free time to help animals. The charity are offering a word of advice to all residents: Please be weary when giving puppies, kittens or other animals as Christmas presents. Everyone is much too busy at Christmas
to devote the time and energy needed to settle a new pet into the family home. If your child is pleading with you for a pet, think about your own feelings on the subject. Children often lose interest and the parents will be left to care for the animal. It should also be stressed that having an animal in the house is a wonderful and loving addition to the family and teaches children to be caring. Just make sure the time is right for you to take on an animal. Fingal SPCA would be glad of any volunteers to drive, foster kittens (much of their work is with abandoned kittens) and fund raise. Donations of cash or food is also most welcome and of course they continually need new homes for their rescued cats and kittens. Good News For Pavilions Shopping Centre There was continuing positive news for the Pavilions Shopping Centre, Swords last week, with the news that the popular centre has reached full capacity. “All of our retail units are now fully occupied,” a delighted Centre Manager, Ian Hunter told the County Leader. There are five new retailers in situ, including PC Clinics, a computer repairs shop, Hera, selling in handbags, jewellery and accessories, a new tea and coffee shop called Gurmans which specialises in flavoured and classic coffee beans from all over the world. They are joined by Boutique, a shop which has all the latest ladies fashions and accessories. Another newcomer is Art and Hobby, which caters for Art supplies, stationery and hobbies. Two established retailers have revamped their premises, including Bernard John Jewellers and Life Style Sports, who recently opened the new extension to their sports shop.

Historical Night In Rush Rush Historical Night was held in the Strand Bar Rush recently. The night, organised by the Rush Historical Society, was more than just a trip down memory lane. It was a chance for many to see Colm Fynes’ film recording of Heritage Day on 27th August. The day itself consisted of talks by various different people on the history of Rush. It also included a walk from the newly renovated library to Kay Lane. Kay Lane itself is steeped in local history as it is the site where local man, Jack ‘Rover’ Mc Cann was murdered by the Black and Tans during the War of Independence. ‘Rover’ Mc Cann was also a veteran of the 1916 Rising and was said to be “one of the bravest men that took part in the Rising” according to local historians. It was a packed house in the Strand Bar to see the footage and a very important day for the Rush Historical Society.
