Inspirational Swords Man Is Kick Boxing Champ By Patrick Finnegan A young Swords man is set to become an inspiration to anyone who feels they need to change their lifestyle and put their lives back in order. Darren Cummins, aged 28 recently became All-Ireland Kick Boxing champion, by showing the grit and determination of a person who set about changing his lifestyle for the better. The young man, from Forest Court in Swords, had never previously been involved in sport to any degree, took up the rapidly growing sport of kick boxing. He decided to focus on getting his health back, so much so that he dedicated much of his spare time to kick boxing. “I was doing Muay Thai kick boxing in Swords, and am now performing Primal Kick boxing in a gym in Kilbarrack. “I hope to go on and get into K1, which is the professional end of Muay Thai, which merges the two disciplines together.” Darren won the ISKA Kick Boxing Belt in the 64 Kg weight category. “I was Irish champion at after only two fights. It was a vacant title and Chris Boyle and Damien Crowther, my coaches put me All-Ireland Kick Boxing champion, Darren Cummins is pictured with his mother, Lorraine. forward when they saw the amount of effort I was putting in and I

was lucky enough to win.” This prestigious belt now entitles Darren to go forward for the European title and he told the County Leader: “Hopefully, I can bring back the European title to Swords.” Darren had a history of drug abuse and spent much of his teenage years addicted to hash and cocaine, when a bizarre incident involving his mother, changed his life. You can read about Darren’s life changing moment in next week’s “North County Living’ feature, which is set to provide inspiration for anyone who is trapped in the black hole of drug addiction.

Launch Of Balbriggan Maritime Museum A unique ‘Pop Up’ Maritime Museum was launched at the Bracken Court Hotel, Balbriggan on Thursday last, 9th February. The attendance included Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Jimmy Deenihan TD and Cllr Monica Harford, who deputised for Cathaoirleach, Grainne Maguire. This one day event, which was free, was well attended by the public. The museum, a first of its kind for the area, gave visitors a chance to glimpse into the past with various objects and artefacts on display. It featured cannon balls, fishing nets, whale bones and other items found by trawlers from Balbriggan in their nets down the years, as well as items from private collections. Schools and the community in general came out in force to view this unique glimpse into Balbriggan’s rich maritime tradition. Trevor Sargent, Chairman of the Balbriggan Maritime Museum spoke of how the concept was initiated. “It came from the Economic Forum in 2010. One of

the ideas floated was that Balbriggan should celebrate it’s maritime past.” He also urged Minister Deenihan to speak with Minister Leo Varadkar, with a view to getting funding for a

Portmarnock Students Depart For Lesotho Over 60 students, parents and teachers from Portmarnock Community School departed for their Charity mission to Lesotho in Africa on Friday last, 10th February. Along with Action Ireland Trust, the students will be working on highly important development projects in Lesotho for two weeks. The Portmarnock School had previously been working with the Friends In Ireland group over the past four years to help a number of community health centres, school extensions a series of cultural exchange programmes in South Africa,

which has now concluded. However, the students are continuing their efforts with Action Ireland Trust, which aims to create links, supports and essential funding for the development of the identified needs. Plans include the construction of a number of lodges for mothers in waiting adjacent to St Joseph’s Hospital. Additional dormitories and other projects are also planned on the two week trip. Speaking about the project, School principal, Pat O’Riordan said: “As the PCS group move on to pastures new in the Lesotho project, we acknowledge the hard work of all involved over the past few years. Our mixed emotions of sadness to finish, tinged with pride in a job well done fuel us with energy to embrace what comes next.”

Donabate Progress ‘As Gaeilge’

Donabate are through to the quarterfinal of TG4’s G-Team, the biggest Irish language competition in history, aimed at getting the country speaking Irish, outside the Gaeltacht regions. Donabate overcame stiff opposition from Castlewellan, Co. Down in the first round and now progress to the quarter-final. Initially Donabate was one of over 100 applicants for the competition. This was later narrowed down to 12 for the first round. As well as being the only town from the North County, Donabate are also the only town from Dublin to make it this far. For the first round, each town was required to organise a ‘G-Day’ or Gaeilge day. Every person in the town was required to speak as much Irish as

possible, whilst going about their everyday business. Donabate organised a Mass, bus tour and a tour of Newbridge House, as Gaeilge. While the main focus of the show is on the use of Irish language, it is also about giving small communities throughout Ireland an opportunity to showcase their towns and their heritage. The eventual winners will take away prize money of €40,000 to be used for promoting the local area. We’re all looking forward to the quarter-final, which will be aired on TG4 on Sunday, 4th March at 8pm. We wish Donabate well and know that they will do the North County proud agus beidh gach rud ceart go leoir.

Brackenstown Centre Gets Thumbs Down

A

long awaited Community Centre for Brackenstown residents hit yet another stumbling block recently, with the County Council outlining the project as being unlikely to feature in this year's capital programme.

By Kieran Dunne It is the latest set-back the proposed Centre faces following a lengthy campaign which has drawn the support of politicians and community activists around the North County. The Council, in responding to a motion brought by a number of local councillors, said that the project's inclusion 'in the next capital programme would give the impres-

sion that the facility can be delivered in the short term.' This, they claim, would raise false expectations that the Centre is likely to be constructed in the near future and would be unfair to the local community. Speaking to the County Leader, Dermot O'Keeffe, a former campaigner and Chairman of Brackenstown Community, Sport and Development Association said: “We've been told in the past that we are top priority on the capital funding programme for a number of years. This latest decision is disappointing, given the huge need for the facility.” “Young people hanging around corners with nothing else to do, clubs and other groups from everywhere could avail of such

Fundraiser For Donabate School Scoil Phadraic Cailini in Donabate will be holding a gala in March to raise funds for the school. They currently need to raise about € 60,000 which will go towards building an extension on their present school hall, which is currently far too small given the capacity

of students attending the school. The hall currently holds 150 at absolute maximum capacity and the school has over 420 pupils. While the school has very varied and extensive extra-curricular programme for which the hall is used, the small size limits

a facility. You only have to look at the stateof-the-art plans for the project to see the benefits.” “It is also really disappointing that other projects, such as the one down in Applewood, have been given the go-ahead. I'm a realist and, to be honest, I don't think the funds will ever become available,” he concluded. The Council's response was issued at a Balbriggan/Swords Area Committee meeting on Thursday, 9th February, following a strongly supported motion issued by councillors - Darragh Butler (FF), Gerry McGuire (Lab), Tom Kelleher (Lab), Anne Devitt (FG) and Eugene Coppinger (SP).

their capacity to hold larger events such as school concerts, plays, recitals and so on. It’s a very tight squeeze to accommodate parents at events. Also as clearly not all the pupils can fit at one time and assembly etc needs to be run a number of times to reach everyone. The school’s very active parents’ association will be running this year’s Gala Dinner Dance, which will be held on March 3rd in the Waterside Hotel in Donabate

at 8pm. It’s €50 per ticket which includes a reception drink, 4 course dinner and dancing with a band and DJ until 12:30 a.m. There will also be a Grand Draw for fantastic prizes, sponsored very generously by local businesses. If anyone would like to make a contribution to this very worthwhile cause, please call Parents’ Association on 0871855171. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Relief For Holywell Residents The completion of the road distributor network in Holywell estate will route traffic away from the residential core of the area. This will significantly ease the traffic through the residential area and providing a more appropriate route for bus services. In welcoming the development, local deputy, Alan Farrell (FG) said: “This project, along with the pedestrian/cycling route will mean a lot to the residents in Holywell. I have been working on Alan Farrell TD this project since 2005, alongside the Holywell Residents Association who have lobbied local councillors and the County Council on an ongoing basis, to ensure that the completion of the distributor road remained a priority. Farrell continued: “It was at the draft stage of the Fingal Development Plan

2011 – 2017 that I successfully passed a motion to ensure that the lands neighbouring Holywell could not be developed until such time as the distributor road was completed, and in doing so placed an emphasis on the future development of the Airside Business and Retail Parks. “There are now various steps that will need to be taken to ensure that the scheme can go to tender in 2012. The local authority intends to acquire land from the owner by agreement, and existing roadways will need to be taken in charge. Work will also be required on the existing attenuating pond in co-operation with the developer. However, I very much hope that the Council will be able to ensure the timely delivery of this road.”

Doling Out Information And Advice Next year, Joan Craig will celebrate 20 years voluntary service to the community in the Citizens Information Service in Swords. From when she started in 1993 to date, she tells the County Leader, the service provided has come full circle. “When I began with the CIS we were just coming out of a recession, so the enquiries were predominantly about social welfare, and now we’ve been back to that again for the past couple of years. I started working here two years after I moved to Swords, when a friend asked me if I’d like to give volunteering a go.” “Back then everything was paper files, we had a big folder and if someone came in and asked questions, you had to sift through a huge file of notifications from the Department and find the relevant information for them. It’s in my nature: I like rooting out information, I’m inquisitive, and I loved it from the start. ” Because there were lots of amendments relating to the same thing, as a rookie Joan had to rummage through older paper files and weed out previous ones, so she had the most current entitlements to hand when people asked. “At that time, the CIS also offered a financial service once a month, and now that aspect is handled by MABS, and a free legal advice centre, which we still do. As in, we still offer the legal advice as a first port of call – our solicitors can’t take on a case for you, but they can advise on who can best help you with your case. Lots of people just need to find out if they actually have a case before engaging a solicitor in a lengthy procedure. So they will either drop in or phone the office in the Plaza to make an appointment with one of the solicitors who are offering their skills and expertise.” Being able to deal with distressed or anxious people is one of the core qualities that has stood to Joan since her involvement with the CIS began. Her experience and training helps her to continue to meet the demands of the job, despite the challenges the recession brings to bear on it. “The bulk of the enquiries are about social welfare and as you can imagine, people are looking for a sympathetic reception and an absolutely confidential treatment of the issue that’s worrying them. Some people come in worried about everybody knowing their business, but it’s something all the clerical staff dispels at once. Everything we do is done on an absolutely confidential basis, we sign a confidentiality agreement, and we cannot discuss it outside the office. Everything in here is in the strictest of confidence.” Joan’s involvement over the past two decades means she is uniquely placed to see and adapt to the changing needs of the voluntary aspect of community service. The tools may have changed but the skills haven’t. “When I started there I hadn’t a clue how to turn on the computer,” she smiles. “And from that through the training I’ve undergone, I feel I’ve personally got a lot out of it.” Her on-site experience has been regu-

larly updated with formal qualifications such as the Information Providers Programme, which she began in 2007 and finished in April 2008. She was invited to complete the course by the service’s development manager, and not only boosted her skills, but also gained a distinction in her final examinations. “It was one morning a week in the National College of Ireland, funded by Comhairle which funds the CIS each week. You had a different module, one week on employment rights, another week family law. There was a written assignment every week, finishing up with a computer proficiency exam and a more indepth case study at the end of the course. “I really enjoyed it: I met people from all other centres around the country, which meant we could go over everything with volunteers and paid staff. I still did my volunteering once a week and though I got a certain amount of satisfaction from the distinction grade, it was the fact that I felt better equipped to give the information to our clients that made the extra work worth it.” The increased traffic through the office in recent years means that the clerical volunteers need to have more specific knowledge, she explains, which is why she completed yet another course, this time on family law and she’s founds it helps shape her response to some of the queries. “The Family Law course I did dealt with separation, mediation, children, maintenance and family breakdown. It also covered some of the new things that have come in and how that has an impact on co-habitees. As an information assistant, you’ve to always realise you’re not a solicitor, you can answer the question as best you can and know when to refer them on. You do them a disservice by not passing them on to more specialist knowledge, and you can never feel that you know it all because you don’t.” Joan’s also been appointed as a CIS board director and as such is tasked with ensuring good governance. “That means we make sure that the funding we get from central government is used correctly, that all accounts are properly done. We’d meet every six weeks with issues that help the area development manager in growing our services.” The service has already grown to encompass the people of Balbriggan, Skerries and Malahide, as well as those living in Swords, so it covers a lot of ground geographically as well as the types of issues encountered. She’s quick to point out that people don’t just come to them in a crisis. She’s made many friends over the years, specifically mentioning her former colleague, Ailish Bishop who joined with her and only retired from the board of directors last year. “It was sad to see Ailish go, she’ll be missed. Others I joined with have gone on to other CIS offices or have moved from the area.” It’s a far cry from her first morning in the Portacabin by the courthouse and she’s looking forward to many more years of giving back to the community.

“Lots of people just need to find out if they actually have a case before engaging a solicitor in a lengthy procedure.”

An innovative football league aimed at the unemployed has recently launched in Balbriggan. The County Council have teamed up with the FAI to launch the ‘Stay Active’ programme aimed at men and women aged 18-50 years who are job seekers, unemployed and particularly long-term unemployed. This free programme will take place with weekday recreational 5-a-side football, progressing to FAI Coach education courses for interested participants and finishing with a link-up to local clubs to assist with coaching underage teams. Commenting on the programme Marion Brown, Principal Sports officer with the County Council told the County Leader: “We can’t underestimate the huge social benefit of an initiative such as this, which allows people to develop and improve their sports and fitness skills, and encourages them to become involved in their communities,” he said. The programme takes place at the Glebe North all-weather facility in Balbriggan from 12 noon to 1.30pm and runs every Wednesday and there is no cost to the participants. It’s free and a great programme, so come along and get involved.

First Time Buyers One of the good things to emerge from the current economic downturn is that the price of new and second hand houses has come tumbling down. Homes in very desirable locations, that were once seen as being affordable to only a few, are now within the financial reach of many. Purchasing a home is the largest single financial commitment you will make, so care is required in choosing your provider. Remember, while the current economic situation persists, lending agencies are reluctant to offer mortgages, so you may have to wait some time. A mortgage

can extend over thirty years of your life, making it crucial to research your options with an eye towards the long term implications. The first step in the process is a thorough evaluation of your financial situation. A clear picture of your credit standing and financial obligations, present and future, can help you decide what sort of monthly payments you can comfortably afford, as well as aid in determining the amount you can promise as a down payment on your new home. There are a number of banks and building societies which can offer reasonable deals.

Balcarrick’s New Captains Drive-In Balcarrick Golf Club celebrated the new Captains' Drive-In for the Men's and Ladies new Captains and Vice Captains, on Saturday, 4th February last. It was a packed clubhouse for the event on what was a typically fresh February morning. The new captains take on the huge responsibility of steering and overseeing the club teams for the coming year. The roles are for one year, after which new captains will be appointed. The ceremony was marked by the presentation of new

club jackets, speeches from Marlene Kennedy, the club President,

as well as the, by now customary hospitality at Balcarrick, of hot finger food, hot beverages and a very warm welcome. Afterwards, to keep the body and spirit warm, all members

headed for the green for a shot gun round of golf. We wish the new captains and Balcarrick all the best for the coming year and we know it will be every bit as successful as previous years.

Gemini

May 21 - Jun 20

This hardly seems the ideal time to review the way you use your resources. But the insights triggered by planetary movement this week are deeply stirring. So much so, you realise that changes require considerable thought.

Cancer

Jun 21 - Jul 22

Nobody would accuse you of being rigid in your thinking. But there are certain habits that you cling to - especially when it comes to security, pleasure or control. Be prepared - all three are about to be shaken this week.

Leo

Jul 23 - Aug 23

You know that time spent on petty disagreements is time wasted. But others don’t, they insist on dissecting issues, though, there is so much that is more pressing. However, you feel that you should at least show an interest.

Virgo

Aug 24 - Sep 22

It will become apparent that if you don’t take a stand on certain issues, then others are going to continue as if everything was just fine. And what appears relatively unimportant now could become a real problem later.

Libra

Sep 23 - Oct 22

Few things are more pointless than arguing with those who won’t consider any viewpoint but their own. Normally it would be wiser to walk away. But it might be of benefit for you to listen to what they have to say.

Scorpio

Oct 23 - Nov 22

While you’ll have plenty of opportunity to vanquish past foes this week, it is important to keep the future in mind. In fact, you’ll want to act swiftly in response to revelations that accompanies a particular conversation.

Sagittarius

Nov 23 - Dec 21

Having already committed to a project, you’re unlikely to welcome the further changes ushered in this week. But, once you’ve calmed down, you realise that these are what previous shifts were preparing you for.

Capricorn

OPEN 7 DAYS

Dec 22 - Jan 19

Whether unappealing circumstances or unscrupulous people are the cause, you’re backed into a corner - and not too happy about it. Added to this, you can’t discuss problems openly. Best keep a low profile for a bit.
