hen little Amelia Cairnduff was born in Oldtown last week, she had no idea of the fuss she was creating. The reason for this is that Amelia was born, not in a hospital, but at home to her very proud parents, Pauline and Erick.

By Patrick Finnegan What makes this birth so unusual is that it is the first home birth in Oldtown in the past 21 years.

However, it was not a planned home birth as Pauline explained to the County Leader. “My

mother, Marian travelled from South Africa to support me during the birth. Last Friday week, 3rd June, I felt a bad pain but thought nothing of it, particularly since the births of my two boys were slow and long drawn out. I woke at 3.30 in the morning and the birth process had begun. The pain did not go away, so an ambulance was called. My mum was a great support to me at this

In the last edition of the County Leader, we reported on the distressing theft of equipment from Balbriggan Tidy Towns equipment hut. However, this week, the Tidy Towns team were overwhelmed by the generosity of the students of Balbriggan Community College who donated €475 from the proceeds of their annual school show. The students performed a version of the popular Television show, X-Factor and collected the dona-

village was very rare and, after some enquiries, it is believed that the last home birth was 21 years ago. Pauline’s entire family of Erick and their two other children, Nathan and Connor, as well as mother Marian are delighted with their beautiful new addition to the family.

tion from the entrance fee. The school principal told Tidy Towns Chairman, Joe Troy, “the students saw the story in the paper and were very anxious to support this worthy local cause.” Volunteer, Ciaran Wiseman was invited to the school on Thursday, 2nd June to receive a cheque from the students. Ciaran said after the presentation, “We are so proud of these young people. It shows they really care about Balbriggan and their environment, well done to all the students and teachers. We think Balbriggan Community College certainly has the Community X-Factor.”

Swords Man Cooks Meal Fit For A Queen By Jennifer McShane Swords chef John Dowd had a night few would forget as he had the honour of cooking for Queen Elizabeth II during her recent visit to Ireland. Speaking to the County Leader, John says cooking for the queen was one of the greatest honours of his career: “It was such an honour to cook for her and she was such a lovely women. Her visit was such a positive thing for the country so I was delighted to be a part of it.” John has had years of experience with cooking and with working for the Burlington and Air Lingus, he says he’s had a few encounters with the stars and other members of the Royal family. “I wasn’t too nervous this time around as I’d cooked for Prince Charles and Princess Diana some years ago. You might say I was used to being around the royals,” he joked. “I remember in particular when I met Paul Newman. He was opening the Barrestown Camps and he was just so lovely. Quiet and a complete gentlemen. It was a pleasure to cook for them all,” he continued. Cooking runs in the family according to John and he tells

The first thing I ever cooked with her was an apple tart.” John would like to give a special mention to his wife Bridie who is also a chef. Concern Over Landmark Balbriggan Building

Newly elected Balbriggan Town Cathaoirleach, Grainne Murray at the Bath House

Swords Gets “Empty Promises From Council” Members of the Swords Tidy Town committee are fuming due to the lack of action from the County Council regarding the Swords clean up, particularly around the Swords Park area.

By Jennifer McShane Speaking to the County Leader, Lorraine Sutton from the Swords Community Council says the Tidy Towns committee won’t let the matter go because it’s impor-

Balbriggan Town Cathaoirleach, Grainne Maguire has expressed her concerns about the deteriorating condition of one of Balbriggan’s most historic landmarks. The Bath House, which is situated in an idyllic setting on the town’s North Beach, also known as King’s Strand, has fallen into a state of disrepair over the years. Cllr Maguire told the County Leader, “This is a protected structure and was once used for hot sea baths. They used to bring in the seaweed here many years ago. The Bath House was a particularly fine building in its day, but the rusty, galvanised roof is particularly unsightly and is a safety hazard for teenagers in the area,” she said. Maguire accepted that money is no longer available for projects like this, but was adamant that something needed to be done, and soon. “All I want is for the County Council to protect the structure that’s here until they find the money to renovate it properly. Nearby Bremore Castle is also in need of repair. It is an objective on the Fingal Development Plan to upgrade these buildings,” she said. The Bath House was once a particularly fine building which added greatly to the lovely scenic aspect of North Beach with its fine views. The neglect of such a building is sad and because of its rich history, and protected status, the restoration of this building to its former glory must be treated as a priority. It has the potential to be a great addition to the area and would be a focal point to attract visitors here.

tant for the town and will affect its position in the Tidy Towns competition: “It’s a disgrace. It’s been over three weeks since we brought the matter up with the County Council and so far nothing has been done. It’s been everyone who is helping out with the Tidy Towns that have got work done, not the Council. We get nothing but empty promises from them.” “I just can’t understand why other towns like Skerries and Malahide get a preference over us,” Lorraine continued. “If there was ever a time to do anything about it, its now especially with the Tidy Towns judging looming. And if we let the matter go, the same thing will just go on the next time so we will keep persevering with the issue.”

The One That Nearly Got Away A rather strange thing happened at the last Gormanston & District Anglers competition at the Wavin Lake in Balrothery recently. The fly fishing competition on Dublin’s largest all year trout fishery produced an unusual fish called “The Doctor Fish”. This would not usually be deemed as strange except that in the 70’s when Gormanston and District Anglers took over the fishery, they decided that the

reservoir was better suited as purely a rainbow trout fishery (this would allow anglers the opportunity to fish 12 months of the year). The Central Fisheries were called in and they removed all other species of fish from the waters. It seems this unusual species of tench or ‘Doctor Fish’ (the Tench is called the doctor fish, because it used to be used as a treatment for skin diseases such as psoriasis) was the

There was a formal medal presentation ceremony afterwards where new club wear was presented to the club by their sponsors. This came about after he tabled a motion under the Mayor’s business at Monday’s meeting at the Council, calling on County Manager, David O’Connor to set up an emergency task force. The Manager has agreed to the motion and he will head up the task force,

which will also include the Council’s Director of Water Services, the Director of Transportation, Finance personnel and other relevant Senior Engineers in the Water Service area. The task force will also include Mayor Farrell This is a bold effort by the Mayor to address the serious, continuous and growing problems of water supply and distribution. Much of these prob-

lems are caused by an inadequate and failing pipe network and constantly malfunctioning machinery and equipment, resulting in serious water outages of long duration all over the County, particularly in Naul, Rolestown and Kinsealy. Mayor Farrell told the County Leader that he expects action to be taken to solve this problem. “I’m hoping there can be significant resources directed in

y

this area, in order to ensure that the present rate of 10 kilometres of new piping per year can be extended to 20 kilometres and even higher. This will ensure that we can break the back of this continuous problem as soon as possible,” he said. He also spoke of widening the search for water in the North County. “I hope it is the function of this task force to ensure other areas of securing supplies can be identified. We have a major problem and we need to look at the River

Transplanting Hope Great Stock In The Future Disposal Sale C

olin White, Balbriggan resident and team manager of Transplant Team Ireland, shows me around the fantastic family facility built in 2001 by the Irish Kidney Association in the grounds of Beaumont Hospital. He is staff member of the Irish Kidney Association and describes the centre as ‘taking pressure off families at a difficult time.’ According to Colin they have three broad categories of visitors. “The families of patients who have been called for transplant (which we love), the families of patients who may have to travel a long way for an early morning consultation. We ease a bit of pressure and also a place where people can stay if they have a family member who has been admitted to the hospital due to illness.” While the centre's garden is an oasis, the kitchen is the heart of the facility where Colin describes families making long lasting friendships that begin at a very emotional time for all involved. He is excited about managing the Transplant Team for Ireland's upcoming participation in the World Transplant Games in Goteberg, Sweden from 17th -24th June. While it's a huge undertaking for him personally, it's one that sits lightly because it's wonderful to be responsible for ensuring 50 plus people have an amazing week in Sweden. “While the athletes are driven, one of their primary goals is to raise public awareness about the need for organ donation,” says Colin. He says the Games provide ‘competitive opportunities right across the age spectrum.’ This year's team has athletes ranging in age from 9 - 71 and Colin knows the older athletes give a sense to the younger transplant recipients and their families that they have a future. He describes sitting among the athletes of the Transplant Team and thinking ‘every single person here is alive because of the generosity of someone else. Every organ donation leading to transplantation doesn't just keep someone alive, it gives them a life.’ Returning from the World Transplant Games in Thailand in 2007, President Mary McAleese invited the team and their supporters to Aras an Uachtarain to congratulate them on their achievements. Instead of focusing on their record medal haul, the President praised the lift the team had given to those recently diagnosed with organ failure and to donor families who'd made a life saving decision at a difficult time. This year, the travelling party includes 33 athletes and 21 supporters. During a recent motivational talk given to the athletes by Tyrone manager, Mickey Harte, he urged team members to strive to achieve their personal best in their chosen events and thereby strengthen team morale, honour their donors and represent Ireland on the world stage. Colin's personal connection with the Irish Kidney Association goes back many years. Having been very ill for some time, Colin's Zambian wife Chikoyo was finally diagnosed in 2001 in Zimbabwe, where they lived at the time, with end stage kidney disease requiring immediate dialysis. A kidney specialist urged

starts this week Caroline

Heffernan

Colin and Chikoyo to move to Ireland where the quality of treatment was consistently improving. Not knowing where to turn, Colin's parents made a fortuitous phone call to the Irish Kidney Association looking for information and thus began another journey for Colin and Chikoyo. Chikoyo was admitted to Beaumont Hospital and began to receive the dialysis she urgently required. They were supported and comforted by his family and by a network of people, now their friends, to whom they were introduced through the Irish Kidney Association. Chikoyo has made great personal strides with her illness and now performs haemodialysis at home in Balbriggan. This has enabled her achieve a greater level of freedom from her illness as she no longer has to travel to Beaumont three times a week. She loves living in Balbriggan and is actively involved with various vibrant African communities in the area. When Chikoyo's sister died in Zambia her niece, Thelma aged just 15, came to live with Colin and Chikoyo and attended Skerries Community College. Thelma is now proud mother to young daughter, Tanisha and is due another baby shortly. She lives just around the corner from Colin and Chikoyo who love babysitting Tanisha and being involved in her life. Colin secured a job he loved with Prosper Fingal, based in Balbriggan. He developed a sports and recreation programme for people with intellectual disability introducing users to a wide range of fun and stimulating activities such as bowling, soccer and trips to the cinema. His decision to leave Prosper Fingal and take up a position with the Kidney Association in 2005 was a difficult one for Colin but he saw it as another opportunity to ‘use sport as a social tool to improve lives’. Colin's role has expanded since that time, leading to him managing the sports team, maintaining responsibility for the fantastic accommodation unit and creating greater awareness of the need for organ donation. Colin describes Chikoyo as ‘an inspiration to him.’ Through her illness they have learnt to appreciate the little things and not rush through life. He describes the genesis of the Irish Kidney Association in 1978. “It began around a kitchen table when the wife of a patient believed more could be done to ease the plight of patients and family

affected by renal failure. Since that time, much has been achieved in terms of medical advancement, support for patients and their families and a greater awareness of the importance of organ donation. Colin has played a vital part in this progress through his role with the Irish Kidney Association and especially as team manager of Transplant Team Ireland. We wish the team lots of luck on their forthcoming trip to the World Transplant Games in Sweden. To receive your organ donor card, Free Text DONOR to 50050 or phone lo-call 1890 543639. Swords has become a very vibrant town of late, where many people want to live. As it is home to many international companies, it is one of the biggest economic hubs here in the North County. Being a mere 13 km away from Dublin city centre, it is the third biggest town in Ireland, with nearly 40,000 inhabitants. While it offers lots of different styles of sport and contains lots of nature, its proximity to the city, open countryside, the sea and the airport makes it a lovely place to work and live.

Shopping If you love spending your money for the latest fashion and other lovely things, Swords offers you a wide range of fashion shops, banks and other retail shops which provide top class service and value for money. There is not only the choice of international take-away food, you’ll also find lots of restaurants and pubs. Because of that, Swords comes alive at night, with many parties around the excellent pubs and clubs to dance the night away in. Main Street and North Street both offer an array of interesting places to relax and while the time away after a bout of retail therapy. The area has some fine hostelries, including hotels and interesting malls with quaint shops, full of value.

Place to live This charming town can be described as a social mixed area, which also has a good connection to M1 motorway and M50, which makes it extremely accessible from most places. And it can trace

HUGE SELETION OF CRAFT BEERS

its origins back to 560 AD, when it was founded by Saint Colmcille, who gave the town its name. Swords comes from Sord, which means clear or pure. Surrounded by a green belt, it is indeed a very nice place especially for families having little children. And with many parks, for example the Swords Town Park, it offers a area of relaxing and enjoying nature within the town. The ancient and beautiful Swords Castle dominates the town and is indeed an impressive building. Living in Swords provides you with the best of all worlds. That might be the reason why Swords, during the last years has expanded in every direction, as a large number of people want to live in this vibrant and thriving town. The very active Tidy Towns committee have ensured that shop fronts, public buildings and the general appearance of the town has improved greatly in the past few years and the restoration of Swords castle since the mid 1990s. The many hanging baskets around

the town are testament to the great efforts being put into attracting people to visit and enjoy the area.

Tourist attractions The main attraction Swords offers to tourists is the Castle. As it has been the

former residence of the Archbishop of Dublin, it is the only residence which survived though the years to this day. It was built through a period of over 400 years, starting before 1200 AD. The park, which is close to the castle is proving to be very popular for residents and visitors alike, especially when the sun shines. Located here are an excellent playground and a fine Tennis club. Get a Safe Summer Glow

out of your hair. Avoid hair products with formaldehyde or alcohol in it, which can dry out hair. Instead try to use

Summer Hair Care

You have so many choices when it comes to adding a little summer tint to your skin, and the tanning bed shouldn't be one of them. Using a sunless tanner will give your skin a beautiful start to summer. Even if you're not a fan of sunless tanners all over your body, you can happily use them on your face. If you alternate your facial moisturiser with one that builds a bit of colour, you'll have a healthy glow that will make it look as though you just spent the weekend on the beach. Most facial tanners build colour gradually, by alternating with your regular moisturiser, you'll never get too dark.

If you spend lots of time outdoors and want to spice up your look naturally, try combing a little lemon juice through your hair. The sun will lighten those strands faster than your locks sans lemon, giving you an attractive sunstreaked look. It's also easier on your budget

than those expensive highlights. Be sure to deep condition your hair at least once a week, especially if you swim a lot. Hair tends to become dry, dull and brittle if it is soaked and dried too often. Try washing your hair less often; shampooing your hair strips the moisture

natural products that are gentler on your hair. If you know you are going to be in the sun for a long time and if you

don't want to wear anything on your head, use a leave in conditioner with sunscreen in it before you go out.

You should be using a shot glass full for your body, and a full teaspoon just on your face. Reapply every 1-2 hours that you are in the sun to ensure a summer full of safe sun fun.

Summer Skincare Tips The first thing that a person notices about you is your face. During the long summer months the change in the weather can be harsh on your skin. Read through our tips to ensure you’ll have the perfect skin and smile all summer long. It may be hip to be tanned, and it does tend to camouflage a multitude of imperfections, but don't deep-fry your skin for the sake of fashion. Your best bet is a high quality bronzer in a bottle. The Body Shop has a great all-natural formula. Just remember to use a facial scrub prior to application to slough off any dead skin cells. You may also want to use a pair of gloves, lest your palms turn orange! If you spend lots of time outside, be sure to use sunscreen with minimum SPF 15. The cancerpreventing benefits are obvious, but protection is also a must for those of us who don't want to look old before our time If you do burn, apply Aloe Vera or lotions containing it. This will cool and soothe your skin and help you to heal faster.

Summer Make-up Tips Take on summer with a fresh face forward - less is best! Accentuate your glowing skin by brushing on a light shimmering powder instead of a heavy foundation. Use makeup sparingly; just enough to flatter your features. Tinited moisterisers are perfect for the summer months. For a polished summer look, remember that you’ll

never go wrong with neutrals. However, do not be afraid to use a pop of colour if needed. Just remember to concentrate on a certain area - may it be your eyes, cheeks or lips. Water-based foundation or those in gel form

work better than oilbased ones. Remember to pick something with SPF so that your face is always protected. Avoid anything that can look heavy. Always remember that less is definitely more.

Through tenacity, hard work and a strong faith they became one of Ireland’s leading clothing manufacturers. He now lives in Malahide and his love for golf and GAA were represented on his beautiful handmade birthday cake. Summer time is a time to feel the vibrance of the lovely surroundings we live in. It’s also a great time to get your house in order and make changes. If you’re planning a summer clean out and are having a problem with space you can do many things to improve this. There are lots of tricks to getting the look of minimalism into your home without having to carry out major refurbishments. The simplest step is to get some storage boxes in order to put some of your belongings into place. The only way you can get

The Bedroom Your bedroom is a place for you to relax and unwind, not a place to store all the washing, post,

papers etc. Sometimes we bring work into our bedroom in order to work in bed, this doesn’t work out all the time. The solution to this is to keep some storage boxes in your bedroom and keep your paper work, extra clothes and all other things that you are undecided about in. Keep these storage boxes under your bed if you have room, otherwise designate a place for them on top of your wardrobe.

Campaign For Lusk Secondary School Special Concert At CityNorth Hotel

Well known musician, Damien Dempsy will pay a special concert at the CityNorth Hotel on the 24th of June. Damien and his live band will take to the stage for what is set to be a fantastic night of music. His live shows have become legendary and this show is set to be no different. Damien’s powerful lyrics and brilliant tunes will ensure concert goers are in for a real musical treat. And as if that wasn’t enough, Jerry Fish, one of Ireland’s greatest live performers, will be starring as special guest on the night with his Naked Fish show.

Balbriggan native and Rose of Tralee contestant, Aoibhe Devlin recently organised a charity fashion show in Skerries Rugby Club. The night was a great success with 19 local models from all over the North County taking to the catwalk. Some of the local shops were very supportive of the show. Ollie Grimes and Meghan Mc Auley presented the event with the brilliant Grainne Kelly performing on the night also. Picturebooth.ie was there to capture all the fun with DJ Ruairi Finnegan keeping everyone entertained. “I would like to thank everyone who helped out on the night, came to the show and made the night a great success,” said a delighted Aoibhe. Pictured are models, Annmarie Judge, Sadhbh Carron, organiser Aoibhe Devlin, Niamh Crawford, Keva McAuley, Lauren Owens, Siofra Mc Namee and Emma Gaffney.

Pictured are members of the ET2LL committee and their children who are campaigning to have an Educate Together Secondary School in Lusk. Adults included are, John McKenna, Dr Kasey Treadwell-Shine, Conor Walker, Rioch Farrelly, Anne Casey, Siobhan Farrell and Sinead Cooke. Children are Ethan and Amelia Shine, Sam Walker, Han and Euan McKenna, Lily and Ruby Farrell, Lily Cooke-Culleton, Niamh McGee, and Keelin Shepard.

Skerries Club Seeks New Players Skerries Town Football Club are now at the end of another successful season and would like to say well done to all their players and coaches for their commitment and passion shown over that season. Behind any successful club, parents and sponsors are a key part. The club’s parents have supported the team through good and bad weather and supplied their transport needs for all away matches. They also wish to acknowledge their sponsors, some of whom have supported them over a number of years have again been fantastic.

Overall it has been a very good season for the club. It’s that time of the year again when they start to think about next season. They will be holding assessments for teams this month and as always new players are very welcome to come along and join in. Children who may not have played football before, but would like to get involved in a team, boys or girls, are all welcome. Schoolboy/girl Assessments trials for 2011/12 teams will take place at the Clubhouse, Park Lane, Skerries up until Thursday, 16th June. For players born 2000 - 2003, assessment will take place on Wednesday 15th June from 6.45 - 8.45pm.
