Director of Nifast. and a board member of both Fingal Dublin Chamber and the Drinan Enterprise Centre in Swords and is based at Cpl offices on North Street in Swords. She spoke to the County Leader about this breakthrough opportunity for jobseekers and employers alike. “This is the first time that a project such as this includes the requirements of employers, as well as providing appropriate training for job seekers to match these requirements. This is the best value for money initiative I have ever seen. Unemployed people will now have skills which are valuable to employers and specific to their needs,” she said. The main differences between this initiative and previous ones is that trainees will no longer be just trained, with nowhere to go. “I want people to have a career. If not, then they are back at square one in a few months, which is no good to anyone. This is the first time that industry has been asked to come up

with a solution that works,” said Kinsella. “This is hugely innovative, particularly for all involved, including employers who are looking for efficiencies and innovation in their own businesses to drive competitiveness. These training courses are not widely available and they exceed the expectations and range of skills normally associated with typical activation courses.
A Mother’s Heartbreaking Appeal The distraught mother of missing Rush man, Paul Byrne, has made an impassioned appeal for information that may secure the safe return of her son. Mary Byrne contacted the County Leader in an effort to appeal to people in Rush, who may have any information about Paul, who disappeared from his home at ‘The Cottage’ on Sandy Lane on Christmas morning. “I feel that somebody out there knows something about Paul’s disappearance and I’m appealing to them from the bottom of my heart to contact the Gardai at Balbriggan or at any Garda station,” she said. A large scale search of the area was carried out by friends and family of Mary on Saturday last, in an effort to unearth some information that would lead to Paul’s safe return. Hundreds of people turned up from all parts, which gave great consolation to Mary and her family. Mary told the County Leader, “Paul was in his girlfriend’s house on Christmas Eve until 1am, when he walked the short distance to his home, He and his flatmate, Gary sat up drinking until about 3am. Another friend, Dean Peters, was also staying in the house overnight and, in fact, Paul Mary Byrne is pictured was due to have Christmas her missing son, Paul dinner with Dean’s family later that day. Dean knocked at Paul’s door at around 10am and told him to get himself ready. Dean confirmed that he heard Paul responding in an incoherent manner, which he interpreted as being
She continued enthusiastically, “At last, this represents a real future for those affected by the ravages of unemployment and redundancy in recent times. It is also excellent value for the Irish exchequer. Employers with whom these trained people are placed will benefit from skilled personnel and will help towards providing efficiencies and a competitive edge for their businesses. I believe in building capacity and investing in people and helping them to reach their potential,” she said. See details on page 12
By Patrick Finnegan half asleep,” When Paul did not appear at Dean’s home for dinner, both Gary and Dean contacted Paul’s brother, Stephen who lives in Lusk, in an effort to shed some light on the mystery. Stephen knew nothing and the Gardai were contacted on St Stephen’s Day. Paul’s father, who lived in Rush, passed away six years ago and Mary decided to spend Christmas with her partner at Dunboyne Castle. She said, “I met Paul in town on the 22nd December, the Saturday before Christmas. It was the last time I saw him. He seemed to be very troubled by something, which was playing on his mind. He denied that anything was wrong, but, as a mother, you can sense these things. My eldest son, Stephen confirmed that Paul had been acting strangely with him in the lead up to Christmas.” Mary spoke of the wonderful support she has received from people. “It’s now a race against time and I feel I’m losing my mind, bit by bit. I’ve always asked my kids to keep holding the poster for in touch with me, but Paul wouldn’t always do so. He’s my youngest and I can’t live without him. Someone out there knows some information, no matter how small or insignificant and I am appealing to them to come forward. All of our lives are on hold,” said a heartbroken Mary.

Wedding Countdown For Chris With the new year well and truly underway, it was time for our happy couple, Warren and Chris to shake off the excesses of the festive season. With this in mind, the gorgeous couple took themselves down to Peaches Beauty Salon in the Plaza Shopping Centre, Swords to begin the preparations for their wedding on 16th February. Chris was in familiar surroundings, as

By Jennifer McShane The local Tidy Towns group in Balbriggan was delighted to witness the installation of two bins on the Balbriggan beach walk earlier last week. The two bins are part of a commitment received in October last year from the County Council to provide permanent litter control facilities on the well used beach amenity. Although pre-used, the bins were refurbished and can be easily found at the bottom of the viaduct leading to Convent Lane and at the end of the beach walk going towards the Martello tower. According to the group, there is a third bin on its way and this will be placed further up the beach near the path down on to the
southern end of the beach. The group are appealing to all local residents to familiarise themselves with the location of the bins and use the bins where appropriate. Zoe Nelson of the Tidy Towns team told the County Leader: “We are truly delighted that a campaign that lasted three years has eventually been successful and the bins are now a permanent feature, both winter and summer, on our beautiful beach. I had the pleasure of using the bins myself so it’s a great start to 2013.” The installation of the bins is a welcome progression following a particularly bad Christmas from a litter point of view on the beach. The Christmas Day swim event combined with high tides and Council holidays, resulted in a significant deterioration of litter control on the beach. Following comments on a local website, the Tidy Towns team members, Joe Troy and Terry

Warren presented Chris with a wad of notes to spend on herself. He said that he would catch up with her about an hour later. She wondered what was he up to. Eventually, they met up and Chris wondered what had taken him so long. Then she noticed his eyebrows looked a little different. “Have you done something with them?” she asked. They looked a little different. As he denied everything, she thought it must be a trick of the mid-winter light. Only Warren and Joan know the truth. His vanity, however, got the better of him at this stage and he consented to a full body wax, but swore Chris to secrecy about this ‘illicit procedure’. “I’ll be the laughing stock if this gets out,” he thought. Selfless Swords Students Make A Difference By Patrick Finnegan Students from St Finian’s Community College in Swords have selflessly given of their precious time, to ensure that others less fortunate than themselves have had a good Christmas. A group of about 10 students decided to collect food to give to St Vincent de Paul, which was distributed to people locally. The idea came from teacher, Sara Morris, who has been involved with the charity since her schooldays. “I thought that St Vincent de Paul was an appropriate charity to benefit. One of the students, Daryl Hamilton told the County Leader, “We got food from our homes for about a week, as well as a food donation from Dunnes Stores in the Pavilions. We brought the food to the school’s computer room and it was collected by Denis Barry from the St Finian’s
Balbriggan Man Hopes To Follow His Dream By Patrick Finnegan The hugely popular RTE Talent Show, The Voice of Ireland, always unearths exceptional singing talent and this year, it may well be the turn of a Balbriggan man, to forge a singing career for himself. Mark Guildea sang his heart out on the first show of the season, with a powerful performance and convinced two of the judges to press the magical red button and turn their chairs around. Mark, originally from Bath Road in Balbriggan, but now living in Stamullen, told the County Leader: “I was really nervous and I became very worried half way through the song, “Living for the City” by Stevie Wonder, when none of the judges turned around. Thankfully, both Kian Egan and Sharon Corr turned around and I chose Sharon to be my mentor.” He spoke about how he became involved in
singing. “I attended Balbriggan Community College and I started singing when I was about 15. My school friends had a band and they told me I could join them if I was able to get a bass. Luckily, my father came to the rescue and I was in. I’ve always played in rock bands and I eventually ended up in a band called ‘Sweet Revenge’, which was made up of Skerries and Balbriggan lads,” he said. “Five years ago I decided to take a break and for ages I promised myself to get back singing and I have my 15 year old daughter to thank for inspiring me this time. She had been speaking to career guidance counsellors in school and I was giving her advice on following her dream. She turned it all around on me and asked, “What is your dream job?’ I was gobsmacked. I said I’d like to be a singer and she encouraged me to enter the competition. This is a real comeback for me and everyone in Balbriggan has been very supportive and delighted with my success,” he said.

Conference of St Vincent de Paul. The great thing is that all of the food is distributed in the immediate locality,” he said. The students now plan to continue their efforts to help on a regular basis and are in the process of planning fundraisers throughout the school year. They also plan to invite senior citizens to the school to help them with computers. Teacher, Sarah Bolger was full of praise for the selfless students. “They gave up their time to stay late and make sure everything was organised properly. The parents also deserve great credit for their wholehearted support for the initiative. This is the first year and the students are really looking forward to continuing their great work throughout the year,” said Sarah. Denis Barry from St Finian’s Conference of St Vincent de Paul said, “We’re delighted with the support and are most thankful for the generous contributions of the students. The young people today are the future of our organisation. It’s fantastic to see them start so young and the seeds of generosity and kindness have been sown here,” he said.

Rush Bids Farewell To Robbie On Friday last, the town of Rush came to a virtual standstill, as residents joined with family and friends at the funeral of popular local man, Robbie Delves, who was tragically killed whilst on holidays in Tenerife. Hundreds of people packed into St Maur’s Church in the town, with many more gathered outside, unable to gain access to the church. A giant screen was put in place
outside, which enabled people to view the proceedings from inside the church. People came from every corner of Rush to pay their respects to Robbie, who was described as a lovely gentleman, with a kind word for everyone. He was a member of the local St Maur’s GAA Club, whose members escorted the hearse into the church grounds. The enormous crowd which gathered for his funeral, is testament to Robbie’s popularity and the mark he made on the community of Rush. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

There was some good news around the North County as the new Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) survey commended the cleanliness around Dublin Airport and Swords. The survey gives a great write-up to the area around the airport, and shows that enormous strides were made in the last year. The report said that: “The overall impression of the Airport was that of a far cleaner environment. What is so encouraging is that the sites which had scored very poorly last time, for example Swords Road to Blue Long Term Car Park, were clean this time. All of the sites directly related to Dublin Airport were not just clear of litter, but exceptionally well presented and maintained.” Other sites around the airport which were singled out for praise included the exits from Terminals 1 and 2, the Airport Roundabout, the junctions with the M50, and the approaches to the Red Car Park. Meanwhile in Swords, Tidy Towns Chairman Des Becton said that while the town did well, he was disappointed to see Swords drop four places this year. He told the County Leader: “There were one or two blackspots that let the town down. The first being the Business Park on North Street and the Bottle Bank in River Valley.” The current state of the bottle bank has been brought to the Council’s attention numerous times. Local political activist, Joe Newman also appealed to the council to sort it out and just last week, Councillor Darragh Butler brought the issue of the bottle bank up in an area meeting. “The trend seems to be that we’re falling down when it comes to the private properties,” continued Des Becton. “The business community and the Council all have their own part to play and the Tidy Towns group are calling on them to work together to ensure we keep improving.” Swords Tidy Towns will have a meeting in the Town Hall on Thursday, January 31st to discuss their plan for the year and all are welcome to attend.

8 WEEK WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAMME
FREE for anyone joining the Gym
We all know crash diets don’t work. All they serve to do is make us cranky and leave us upset when we pile the weight back on two weeks later. So, rather than deciding to give up cakes, chocolate, sweets, crisps and takeaways altogether, we should rather focus on merely not eating quite as much. Emptying the cupboards of what you love in one big swoop is only going to lead to binge eating, leaving you wracked with guilt and feeling even more sorry for yourself. Instead, why not cut down your portion sizes, and maybe just get a take-away once
a fortnight. And it’s ok to have a bit of chocolate, one bar a day, instead of three or four, will see you cut down at the same time as well as keeping those cravings at bay. A little bit of exercise wouldn’t go amiss either and just like the diet there’s no point in trying to overdo it. Committing to heading to the gym four times a week will likely just end in disaster.
Aim to head once a week or even just take a walk or a jog twice a week. A half an hour of sit-ups and jumping jacks in the comfort of your own home is a good idea too, especially for those who may struggle with finding the time to head to the gym. With a bit of willpower it won’t be long before you’re staring at the new you in the mirror!

Smoking - Give It Up! There are still plenty of other things to do to keep you focused asides from the above. For starters, you could give up those nasty cigarettes. Rather than go over the usual “how much is it costing me to smoke and would it buy me a foreign holiday this year?” Instead, we can look at other areas of your life where freeing yourself of the nasty habit will be massively beneficial. For one thing there’s your general health and also insurance! Just pointing that one out is probably enough for you to speculate as to how your health is put to risk if you are a smoker. There is so much help out there for people “under the spell” of cigarettes. There are many different steps you can take to firmly kick that habit. There are a number of great programmes located in the North County to assist you while you give them up. If you visit your local pharmacy, they’ll be able to give you the best advice possible in this regard. The first step is the hardest, so if you take it, try to see if there are any friends or family who will give them up too, as you’ll have them for support when times get tough.

your ideal bathroom. Next should be the bedroom. This room is the most private, it’s where we are at our most vulnerable and the place where we shake off the outside world returning to ourselves. If your bedroom is a constant state of disarray, then it’s probably a good idea to open up the wardrobe and have a good rummage. Get rid of anything you haven’t worn in six
months, don’t be worrying though because this is the perfect opportunity to appraise your clothing collection. You can’t lose. The kitchen is the heart of the home and with so many designs to choose from, it’s worth taking your time. At the end of all that work as you walk about the house, you will (finally!) see what a fantastic idea it was to revamp your life starting with your surroundings.

Give Your Home A Revamp It’s a well known fact that our surroundings have a direct impact on our mental health. Surroundings can be anything from the area we live in, the people we associate with or any number of things. However, few realise how our homes affect us. With the start of a new year and a whole new set of rules set down by yourself, take a look around your home and be honest - could it do with a new look? The answer usually is yes. Particularly if you associate 2012 with it a host of sad memories. If you start now then by February, you could have the home you’ve always wanted. Take out a notepad and pen and start in the room you like the most, so that by the time you reach the room you like the least you won’t be adverse to completely destroying it and starting again. One area that appears to need constant attention is the bathroom. Specialists will offer sound advice for

Balbriggan Chamber Endorses Location Of Primary Care Centre The new Primary Care Centre, which has been been proposed to be built on Dublin Street in Balbriggan, has been given a ringing endorsement by the local business community. President of Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce, Kevin Tolan said that the Chamber fully supported the decision to specifically locate the facility in the town centre. He told the County Leader, “The chosen site is located on the Main Street, in close proximity to public transport, including Bus Balbriggan Chamber Eireann 101 route, the President, Kevin Tolan Number 33 Dublin Bus stop and within a short walk of the railway station. This is important so that patients, and indeed staff of the Primary Care Centre can choose to travel to the Centre, without
depending on a car or taxi,” he said. Tolan was fully aware of the employment opportunities that the new centre can provide. “We welcome the employment that will be generated by such a facility, both during the construction phase and when completed and we are hopeful that some unemployed people locally would have the opportunity to find employment in the jobs created. Indeed, we predict that, indirectly, new positions will be created in the servicing, supply sectors, as well as the benefits that the resultant increased footfall will bring to the town.” The subject site is within the the study area of the recently completed ‘Public Realm Plan’, which has been fully endorsed by the County Council. Tolan referred to the opening statement of that document which states that, “the town centre is the heart of Balbriggan and a healthy town needs a healthy heart.” In fully supporting the proposed location of the Centre, and using the health analogy, he maintains that “the chosen location for the Primary Care Centre, whose direct purpose will be to provide healthcare for the people of Balbriggan and surrounding areas, will in itself, be helping to breathe life back into the heart of Balbriggan.”

Reversal Of Cuts To Senior Alert Scheme Welcomed The decision to reverse the cut to the budget of the Senior Alert Scheme in half has been welcomed by local senator, Darragh O’Brien. The scheme, which was devised, so that older persons in the community can feel safe and secure in their homes, helps to fund the purchase of monitored personal alarms, smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, external security lights and internal emergency lights and is essential
By Jennifer McShane to the elderly around the North County. The cuts would have meant that any elderly persons wanting to avail of the scheme after February 1st this year, would only be eligible if they are 70 or over and living entirely alone. So for example, if two elderly persons are living together, neither would have been entitled to the scheme. The cut would have slashed the funding for the Senior Alert

Scheme from €2.5m to €1.1m, which would have posed a direct threat to the independence, safety and security of older people living in North County, This decision has been given a broad welcome
in the North County. Senator Darragh O’Brien (FF), told the County Leader, “I welcome the fact that the Government has seen sense in reversing this savage cut. There is no doubt in my mind that credit
for this goes to local Senior Citizens groups, such as Rush Senior Citizens, where Chairperson, Kathleen O’Brien and others like her across the North County, asserted substantial pressure on Government to ensure that these cuts did not take place. We have to make sure that this budget will be maintained in the lifetime of this Government,” he said.

Local Triathlon Club Has Best Year Yet Fingal Triathlon Club was established by a small, highly motivated group of Fingallians in 2009 and since then the Club has gone from strength to strength. Triathlon takes in three disciplines in the following order; swim, bike and run. The name of each race is a clue to the distances involved for example a ‘Sprint Triathlon’, which is the smallest race, involves swimming 750m followed by a 20k cycle followed by a 5k run, all one after the other. Fingal Triathlon Club has members ranging from all ages. “While some members are competitive it’s not all about winning races,”Club PRO, Siobhán Moore told the County Leader. “For many the challenge is about being the best that you can be and trying to beat your best time in your next race. There is a great connection between likeminded people in our Club who are enthusiastic, passionate and highly motivated people,” she said. The club is holding a number of races this year, three Duathlons, one Triathlon and an Aquathon. The Duathlons will take place on Saturday 2nd February, 2nd and 30th March from the Ring Commons Sports Centre. All races commence at 10am. Folowing this, the Fingal Tri Aquathon will take place on Wednesday 29th May to coincide with the Balbriggan Summerfest; this comprises a 750m swim followed by a 5k run. Finally, the Skerries Triathlon will take place on Sunday 23rd June and will feature a number of distance triathlon races included a half ironman distance to mark the 30th anniversary of the first triathlon to be held in Skerries.

May 21 - Jun 20
A business associate or loved one could suggest that you are failing to live up to their own high standards this week. It is more likely to be their unrealistic expectations which are to blame.
Cancer
Jun 21 - Jul 22
Given that certain people are relying on you to provide material, emotional or moral support, and that this is the perfect moment to provide it, do so now and you will feel better about having fun later.
Leo
Jul 23 - Aug 23
You will be tempted to share a secret with someone you believe you can trust. Whether the confidence is your own or someone else’s is immaterial: the fact is that once it is aired it is likely to become public knowledge.
Virgo
Aug 24 - Sep 22
Relatives and loved ones are liable to be unforthcoming and uncooperative, and your natural reaction will be to give them short shrift. It would be a mistake to say anything which could bring regrets or recriminations.
Libra
Sep 23 - Oct 22
Suddenly, your confidence will soar, and you will take in your stride even those things which seemed impossible a short while ago. However, you must be careful not to undermine the efforts of those around you.
Scorpio
Oct 23 - Nov 22
Before you start sharpening your claws this week, spare a thought for someone who is still trying to come to terms with a recent disappointment or loss. A week to show some compassion to one in particular.
Sagittarius
Nov 23 - Dec 21
Although you are constantly on the go, your backlog appears to be growing, and with it your feelings of frustration and guilt. However, with a little patience you should be able to come to grips with most of your tasks.
Capricorn
Dec 22 - Jan 19
It would be a mistake to take anything at face value this week - especially on the home front. It is what others do rather that what they say which will provide clues to their motives and intentions.

New Year, new car! If you are thinking of selling on your old car in exchange for a new model, make sure you get the best price you possibly can, by following some simple tips to make sure your used car can reap its potential value. Clean your car, inside and out. While this may seem the most obvious to many, often times the importance of a clean vehicle to buyers can be overlooked by sellers – after all, first impressions are everything. Hoover the interior, including seats, to get rid of any dust or dirt and finish by polishing the dashboard with a quality dashboard cleaner. Give your wheels some TLC too as these are important to prospective buyers. Make sure all documentation is up to date and ready to pass on to the new owner. This includes the car’s tax book, NCT certificate and an up-to-date service history of the vehicle. Giving your car a service can often be a key selling tool for your motor as it gives the buyer confidence and reassurance in the vehicle. This shows that the car is healthy, well maintained and ready to pass onto the new owner. Investigate the market to gauge an asking price for your car by comparing the prices of similar models to your vehicle. This will help ensure that you don’t undervalue your car and you negotiate the best price possible with your buyer. Never sell a car if finance is still owed on the vehicle. If you are seriously considering selling your car with outstanding finance, be sure to check with the financial company before doing so.
