Shock Announcement Of Redundancies At Dublin Airport There was some bad news on the employment front at Dublin Airport, with the news that the Dublin Airport Authority are set to reduce staff numbers by up to 150, as part of cost-cutting measures. This comes hot on the heels of news that capacity at Dublin Airport is up four per cent for the summer season, with more than half a million extra seats available this year. It seems strange to think that staff reductions are on the agenda, in view of the steady progress made in the past five years. During this time, Dublin Airport has moved from being bottom of the pile to joint third amongst their European peers. Staff have been informed of the plans, which involve a limited voluntary severance scheme and an early retirement scheme. It’s understood the redundancies will be sought in a limited number of areas at the airport, including retail services. Siobhán Moore, DAA External Communications Manager told the County Leader, that the company is currently engaged in a restructuring programme aimed at reducing the cost base at its Irish airports. “Due to the ongoing economic downturn, the company’s airport operations continue to face significant commercial challenges. Consumer sentiment remains weak in Ireland and the UK, which is a key destination for air travel to and
By Jennifer McShane from DAA airports, is in recession. “The 2010 Cost Recovery Programme helped stabilise the DAA’s financial position, but the external economic environment has not improved and it is necessary for the company to take further steps to make its business even more efficient.” She continued, “A restructuring process is currently underway in several specific business units within the company and to facilitate this process, a limited voluntary severance scheme and voluntary early retirement scheme has been Siobhán Moore, DAA introduced. DAA External Communications expects that 100-150 Manager people could leave the business as part of the current restructuring programme.” “The company has communicated with staff representatives in relation to the restructuring plans in recent days and remains committed to maintaining good quality sustainable employment levels consistent with market demand. However, it has to continue to take steps to

A spokeswoman for the Valley View Residents Association “The residents were very concerned regarding this partial removal of wall because it was suggested that a walkway be put there to join the two estates, instead of railings. Speaking to the County Leader, Daly said: “150 jobs have been lost to the community of North Dublin and the idea that this isn’t a huge blow is disappointing. In the present economic climate employers are undermining
jobs and using the current situation to make changes and savings. I think this is an example of that.” The news comes just a day after the Government announced plans to cut Shannon Airport from the DAA. Shannon’s €100m debt will stay with the DAA, which includes Dublin and Cork airports, but sources claimed the two issues were unconnected.

Ryan Set For Glittering Career Skerries lad, Ryan O’Shaughnessy was the toast of the entire country at the weekend, when he reached the final of the popular reality TV show, ‘Britain’s Got Talent.’ The 19 year old, who previously performed in the Voice of Ireland show, sang his own composition ‘No Name’, which had the judges swooning in their seats. Head judge, Simon Cowell said that the Voice of Ireland’s loss was their gain. Alesha Dixon said, “Ryan, you are so special. We’ve had two songs from you which I believe will be big hits,” she said. His emotional rendition received a standing ovation from all four judges, Simon Cowell, David Walliams, Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon. The ex-Fair City star was overwhelmed by the reaction to his success. “Having a million people listen to my songs... it’s just incredible. Never once did I think I’d be in the live final,” said the likeable young star. “I have an album ready to go and also some unfinished songs. I’ll spend the next few days locked up, finishing these songs. The song he wrote was for former school pal, Katie Keegan. “It didn’t quite work out with Katie and I haven’t met anyone since and I’m not looking for anyone either, However, I have had quite a lot of female attention and I’m not complaining ; it’s cool. I’ve even had a few marriage proposal since, but I haven’t followed up on them,” he said cheekily. The overall winner of the show was a dog duo, Ashleigh and Pudsey. One thing for certain is that Ryan O’Shaughnessy is set to have a glittering career Ryan O'Shaughnessy ahead of him and we wish him all the best in his career.

Portmarnock Community Association requests that all groups cease training on the sand dunes to avoid irreparable damage. In recent times, some groups have trained on the dunes which has already damaged them. Portmarnock beach is enjoyed by thousands of visitors every year and its blue flag status is recognition of its cleanliness. Maintenance of this status requires respect and good care of the dunes. Finbar Quigley, Chairperson of Portmarnock Community Association, reminds people of the County Council’s beach bye-law. The bye-law prohibits training on the beach or sand dunes without the consent of the Council. Speaking to the County Leader Mr. Quigley said: "The major voluntary efforts by the local community continue to protect the dunes. This includes the ongoing planting of marram grass, which helps binds them. " Previously, businesses in the Portmarnock area provided staff to take part in planting maram grass. The next planting will take place on Saturday 19th May. Everybody is welcome to join in at 11am. "We trust everyone will play their part in maintaining the high standards at the beach so everyone can continue to enjoy it," he concluded.
Sunday, 6th May was indeed a red letter day for Swords Celtic Football Club. The famous club celebrated it’s 50th anniversary with the launch of a new book, entitled ‘Swords Celtic - 50 Years of Football 1962-2012’ at their magnificent clubhouse. Special guest on the day was Republic of Ireland manager, Giovanni Trapattoni, who launched the new book. A great crowd gathered to get a look at Trap and to wish him and the Boys in Green well on their journey to Poland in June. County Mayor, Cllr Gerry McGuire was also there for this great occasion. The club was founded in 1962 by George McGrane, Jim Rogers, Oliver Dignam and Wally Galvin, with Frankie Monaghan coming on board shortly afterwards. The club now has a total of 300 members, including 31 schoolboy and girls teams. They also have an all weather pitch and a state of the art clubhouse, which will impress any visitors to this fine club. We wish them well and look to the next 50 years.

Sharon Is Carer Of The Year By Jennifer McShane A young lady from Swords has received the momentous North Dublin Carer of the Year 2012 award. Twenty six year old Sharon Salem from River Valley was this year’s recipient after she was nominated by her mother, Margaret. Each year, The Carers Association invites members of the public to nominate family carers to recognise the wonderful service they provide to family members who need extra support.
Every year, wonderful people are nominated and this year was no different. The Association were very moved after hearing of Sharon’s devotion to her mother. Sharon, an only child, returned from her new life in Australia without a moment’s hesitation when Margaret was diagnosed with cancer. In her nomination letter, Margaret told of Sharon’s sacrifice in leaving her job and life behind in Australia to become her full time carer.” I wasn’t always an easy patient,” she said “but Sharon never wavered. She was wonderful.” Thankfully Margaret is now in remission and Sharon’s touching dedication was acknowledged when she received the North Dublin Carer of the Year Award in The Bracken Court Hotel in Balbriggan last week.

Eleven year old Hannah Rudden, a fifth class pupil at St. Brendan’s National School in Loughshinny, was announced as a winner in the ‘Dear Grace’ writing competition at a special awards ceremony in the Helix on Wednesday, 3rd May last. Presented by Brendan O’Carroll, the event was a mixture of glitz, awards, celebrities and music. Special guests included Jedward, Brian Kennedy, Keith Duffy, Brian Ormond, Alan Lynch, The Willoughby Brothers and the cast of Mrs Brown’s Boys. The annual competition is in memory of Grace Nolan, who tragically died, aged 9, as a result of a little known blood disease called Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT). Back in September, fifth and sixth class pupils from all over Ireland entered this competition, which consists of the daunting task of writing a 2000 word essay in the style of a letter to Grace herself, informing her of the main events and activities of the past year, both on a personal and global level. The best 30 essays, including Hannah’s are published in the book, “Dear Grace - Volume 10”

Traditional Weekend In Skerries The countdown is underway to the annual ‘Skerries Traditional Weekend’, which will once again feature a fantastic celebration of all things Irish. Now in its 11th year, this year’s event runs from May 18th to 20th and over the course of the three days there will be lots of music, song and dance reflecting the unique culture of the North County. Leading artists travel to Skerries where they join with locals and visitors in a celebration of Irish heritage in what is always a fantastic event. Last week, the annual table quiz, an important fundraiser for the organisers, was held in Keane’s Bus Bar and as usual it was very well supported. This year, the weekend kicks off with the Schools Outreach Programme on the Friday morning when local musicians visit primary schools in the area providing an interactive workshop and demonstration of various traditional Irish instruments. The finishing touches are currently being put to this year’s schedule and will be announced in the coming weeks.
Efforts To Develop Community Garden In Donabate Transition Towns Donabate Portrane (TTDP) are applying to the HSE to redevelop the old walled gardens, in St. Ita’s, Portrane. TTDP are in negotiations to redevelop the site as a community garden, farm and workshops project.
By Peter Kearney TTDP have a “team of committed local volunteers wishing to become a part of the project. The site was constructed in the 1750s and was used by the HSE until six years ago. Joe English of TTDP says the initiation of this model “would serve to bring local food back to a wider local audience, and allow local residents the opportunity of eating locally grown produce”. Furthermore, “the proposed development represents an appropriate redevelopment opportunity of a historical walled garden by a local voluntary organisation.” They continue by saying “the restoration of the gardens would provide a unique link with our heritage on the peninsula”. TTDP have met with Fingal Leader Partnership, who have offered to fund the project through the Rural Leader Partnership Fund. Joe English and Trish Carey, of the Transitions Towns Committee, said that the land would be “brilliant for the community”. Furthermore, they added, it would cost very little and even “generate jobs’. We await the outcome of the negotitions. Councillor Urges Roundabouts Sponsorship Councillor Darragh Butler (FF) recently asked the County Manager to re-consider asking local businesses to sponsor the main Swords roundabouts. The question was posed as the Fine Gael / Labour Government have postponed a decision on Metro North until at least 2015. This would mean eventual construction would commence much later than this date. In response the County Cllr. Darragh Butler Manager replied that discussions have taken place with a “business operating in Swords, following a request from that business, to look at how the Council and the business might work together in partnership.” “Suggestions made related to the sponsorship of one of the roundabouts on the R132. are ongoing at this time. Additional financial resources are welcome, but additional signage cannot be added to these roundabouts in the interests of driver safety.”
River Valley Rangers FC celebrated their 30th anniversary with a dinner and celebration at River Valley Community Centre recently. The evening proved to be a great success and many old stories were rehashed and retold. Pictured here are founder Paddy Cole (2nd left), with Barry O'Sullivan and Terry Leahy. The club has grown to be recognised nationally and continues to train and develop young players for vibrant careers. Here's to the next 30 years.

Cllr Eoghan O’Brien (FF), has made an appeal to the County Council to speak to the developers of a land bank adjacent to Russell Terrace in Drynam, in order to ensure the area is tidied up and the perimeter fencing is secured. The council cannot use bonds lodged by the developer, Albany Homes, which were attached to the planning permission, because boundary treatment is not included in the planning permission. It was assumed that the boundary would be completed by now, as part of the development. O’Brien told the County Leader, “The land has planning permission, but

Beautiful Eyes... Healthy Retina? Optometrist, Joe O'Sullivan.
Whilst all of our God given senses are of immense importance to us, it is generally accepted that our gift of sight is the most precious. Yet despite the fear of losing our sight, we are hesitant to have our eyes examined on a regular basis. Swords Eye Centre, located in the Plaza Shopping Centre in Swords is ideally positioned to help address the most common problems that affect our eye health. Optometrist, Joe O’Sullivan has no doubt that problems with the retina are commonplace and feels that early detection is vital.
With this in mind, Joe has acquired a new Optomap machine in his Swords practice. “You can help us to protect your vision by having an Optomap retinal scan, which helps detect the early signs of retinal disease more effectively and efficiently than with traditional eye examinations,” he said. We all want the best for our children and good vision is essential. Most children have healthy eyes, but your eyes can be an indicator of the state of your health. Signs of diseases like diabetes can show on the retina. Having an Optomap has clearly given Swords Eye Centre a distinct advantage

over other eye care centres. “We have the Optomap since last February and we’re the fourth place in the Republic to have this machine. The other three are located in a hospital, a university and an eye care centre in Galway,” said Joe. The importance of this new technology
cannot be exaggerated. The Optomap ultra-wide digital retinal scan helps you and your optometrist make informed decisions about your eye health and overall well-being. The Optomap brings your eye examination to life. The vital difference that the Optomap makes is that an Optomap ultra-wide retinal scan captures up to 80 per cent of your retina in one panoramic image. Traditional methods typically reveal only about 10 per cent of the retina at one time. Seeing most of the retina at once will allow your optometrist more time to review your images and educate you about your eye health. Joe explained that the cost of using the Optomap is very reasonable and affordable for most people. “The cost is € 58 for half an hour. The price includes an eye examination. With a medical card or PRSI, you only pay €30, as the €28 is covered. Swords Eye Centre dates back to 1999, when they were originally located directly above their present location in the Plaza. Joe explained about the wide range of products which the practice carries. “We are the only outlet in Swords to sell Gucci, Hugo Boss, Max Mara, Police and many more. We have also just taken on Swarovski, Givenchy and Giorgio Armani. We also carry more

Swords Students Host Hospitality Event Fingal Community College students experienced what it might be like to work in the hospitality industry during a careers seminar hosted by the team in the Hilton Dublin Airport hotel last Friday. Leaving Certificate Applied students, many of whom have a direct interest in the sector, and their teacher, heard general manager Paul Flavin discussing the opportunities a career in hospitality offers young people. Flavin gave an insight into his own experiences as general manager, and advised on the best routes for entry to the industry, the various roles on offer and answered questions posed by the students.
The secondary school students were introduced to key hospitality staff in various roles to highlight the diverse choices on offer when it comes to a hospitality career. Finally, the group enjoyed a behind-the-scenes tour of the hotel and were treated to lunch. He said: “We wanted to provide local students with the opportunity to engage with staff in various roles and at various levels to highlight the diversity a career in hospitality offers. It is important for young people to get first hand experience of what their potential career choice involves and we hope this insight to our own hotel operations will be of benefit to them.”

An Extraordinary Shopping Experience Swords Sometimes we overuse the terms ‘unique’ and ‘unforgettable’ when we come across something that is deserving of these adjectives. But in the case of shopping at JCs Supermarket in Swords, they are fully warranted. This outstanding, independently owned supermarket on Rathbeale Road has been serving the community of Swords and the greater North County area, since it was founded by legendary retailer, JC Savage in 1977. With the arrival of new supermarket chains to Swords and surrounding areas, it was thought that the company would not be in a position to compete. But JC had other ideas and his ability to improvise, has meant that they have grown in leaps and bounds over the years. It was thought that, with the sad passing of JC three years ago, there would be a drop off in in the level of service provided for it’s customers, but if anything,
the opposite is the case. Managing Director, Michael Savage and his staff have managed to ensure that the highest quality of food and drink provided by JCs has been maintained and, in some cases, even surpassed. Michael spoke about the great atmosphere in the shop leading up to the eagerly awaited Car Draw, which will take place on Saturday, 19th May at 4pm. “We started the build up on St Patrick’s Day with two super prizes being given away of €1000 and €300 all over ten weeks, culminating in the giveaway of a Renault Fluence worth over €20,000 in week ten.” To emphasise the company’s policy of supporting local businesses, all of the prizes were sourced from local companies, thus enhancing the local economy. “Our suppliers included Rolestown Garden Centre, Harvey Norman, Jones Garden Centre, Richie’s Cycle Store, to name but a few.” The hope is that Bill Cullen, himself, will be in store to present the keys of the magnificent Renault Fluence to the lucky winner. Michael went on to explain what customers can expect to experience on Car Draw Day.

“We will have a DJ for the event, with face painting for the kids. All the tickets will be placed in a Plexiglas container, which will add to the drama, This will also give people an idea of the amount of tickets that are
there, emphasising the great excitement generated by this Car Draw,” he said. There will also be a number of ‘Special Offers’ on the day. “This promises to be crazy day, Continued on page 12

An Extraordinary S Swords Continued from page 11 with crazy deals,” said Michael. The excitement is certainly mounting and is sure to reach fever pitch, as the countdown to 19th May approaches. The undoubted ‘Jewel in the Crown’ at JCs is
the truly remarkable butchery section, boasting what is, arguably, the longest and most extensive meat counter in Ireland. There is an immediate sense of intense activity, as butchers are visible everywhere, preparing various cuts of meat, as well as serving customers. So what makes JCs butchery department any different to other supermarkets.? Michael explained, “There are huge differences between ourselves and other outlets which provide meat. For starters, we make our own award winning sausages and black and white pudding right here in store. These have won All-Ireland titles and people come from far and wide to purchase them for their unique taste. We also specialise in beef flavoured sausages, as well as chicken sausages. We also have a gluten free option as well.” he said. Shoppers who get their meat in JCs will be instantly struck by a bonhomie among the staff members. It is clear that there is a good rapport between staff members and this is reflected in the easy relationship they have with their customers. Nothing is too much and even the most discerning shoppers come away satisfied. The level of service and value for money brings shoppers back in their droves, as they avail of the many special

offers, which are available on a regular basis. At JCs, they also pickle their own corned beef. They make up their own pickle and have their own machine. Michael explained, “The beef is injected with a special recipe pickle on Monday morning. On Thursday, we take it out and the finished product is a beautiful tender corned beef.” The mince is produced fresh in store. There are two different grades of mince. One is 98 per cent visual lean (VL) and the other is 95 per cent VL, meaning that one has 2 per cent fat, as opposed to 5 per cent fat. “The big difference here is that our corned beef is made in store, as opposed to some large factory production line,” he said. Their rib and round mince is minced in store and contains absolutely no preservatives. Nothing is added except 100 per cent Irish red meat, which explains the short shelf life.
Everything trimmed from the carcass is vacuum packed for mincing the following day, to ensure freshness. To give an idea of the scale of the butchery department at JCs, Michael said, “We employ 10 fully qualified Master Butchers on site, with over 200 years experience between them. They really know what they’re doing,” he said confidently. “Large supermarkets like Tesco and Superquinn have gone away from employing fully qualified master butchers and preparing meat in store. We believe that there’s no substitute for well hung and freshly cut meat, prepared in store. Customers find the expertise of our craft butchers invaluable. We believe that too, We hang it in store, rather than letting it mature in plastic, thus giving best quality, tenderness and flavour to our red meat,” said Michael.

They also prepare pork chops cut on the bone, the traditional way, with delicious crackling. “We believe in preparing our meat the old fashioned way at JCs. We cut our own bacon by hand. All of our chicken, bacon and ham are prepared in store. We also have tripe available, which is still popular with some customers.” Master butcher, Malachy Griffin explained that at JCs, they hang their T-Bone steaks for between 21 and 27 days for maturing. “This gives extra flavour, with the beefy flavour kicking in after 14 days. This leads to tenderness,” said Malachy. He also explained that JCs are renowned for their Carvery Rib Beef Roast. “Clients come from as far away as Dun Laoghaire, Kilternan and Sandymount for the Carvery Rib Roast. He went on to explain the process. “We get the roasts about 16 days matured. We then finish them off and add something extra in the line of flavour and tenderness,” said Malachy.

customers, who return time and again to do their shopping here. Of course there’s so much more to JCs than just a Butchery section. The company has a
definite policy of supporting local producers, where possible. Fruit and vegetables come from local suppliers in the heart of the North County, thus guaranteeing freshness and top class quality. There are no air miles, like other retail outlets. The unique JCs pizza brings people from near and far and this counter is always full with eager customers making sure they don’t miss out. All in all, the service, quality, friendliness and value for money that JCs Supermarket is famous for, looks like standing them in good stead in a world where competition is fierce and consumer choice has never been greater. In satisfying these demands, the future looks very bright for JCs.

ONLY AT JC’S Further along the counter, Master butcher, Brendan Collins explained that JCs are always ready for every eventuality, including summer. “We always have a great range and variety of BBQ products, due to packing our own meat in store, come rain or shine. We’re ready at the drop of a hat for any outbreak of sunshine and a run on our BBQ meats,” he said. Michael summed up the difference between JCs and other supermarkets, where purchasing your meat is concerned.” We take in our beef and break it down ourselves, to ensure our customers have
the finest premium cuts, unlike other supermarkets. Here you are guaranteed the attention of our master craft butchers, who are only too happy to advise on choice, quality and value for money, ensuring that you get the finest cuts of meat possible.” It can be said, without fear of contradiction, that there is no retailer that goes to such lengths to ensure that their customers get the best possible deals and the highest quality meat in terms of flavour, value and tenderness, as JCs do. Their attention to the smallest, most minute detail, is something that is not lost on their loyal

Summer Programme For Balbriggan Youths
by Aine Hannah
Providing The Perfect Headstart Valerie Hegarty is the Swords co-ordinator of HomeStart, a charitable organisation that began life in Ireland in the 1990s. As the wife of the Baptist pastor Clem, Valerie is no stranger to charitable work, but the buzz she gets from the Home-Start programme lights up her face as she speaks about it. “Home-Start is actually quite an international organisation – it’s very big in the UK where it was begun in the 1970s and in Northern Ireland and Canada,” she says. “People wonder what it is – Home Start, is it a building group? something to do with housing? – but it’s a organisation that matches volunteers with families who need them.” Valerie began her own work with HomeStart in Blanchardstown and then moved the focus of her organisational skills back to Swords two years ago, when the charity branched out to a parish closer to her own turf. “I work part-time for Home-Start, initially I was linked in very much with Joan Ashbrook in Blanchardstown, but now that we have 30 families and 30 volunteers trained in the time we’ve been based here in Seatown Road, the main work we do centres around the Swords area.” One of the happiest fruits of Home-Starts’ labours is a weekly meeting on Thursday mornings in the drop-in centre in Seatown Road. “The mums bring their kids to meet here for coffee, the volunteers come along too and for two hours the children play amongst themselves, while the adults chat and very often you wouldn’t know the volunteer helpers from the mums who are getting assistance.” She goes on to explain that a lot of the Home-Start families are not from Swords and one of the aims of the group is in building communities. “We could have Chinese, African, Polish, Romanian – I once had a Chinese paired with a Camaroonian. For the Thursday mornings, they’re just meeting other people, but to see the mums making friends is lovely. After a certain amount of time they move on.” The focus of aid is to families with pre-school age children. “The mums would have at least one child under five, then if there’s a problem, it’s not easy when you’ve moved to a new community.” In terms of women giving their time to families that need help, Valerie says: “it suits women with older kids, as they’re back to school. They might see each other once a month, the volunteers are working on their own one on one. Sometimes I’ve asked a volunteer to work with two families, but they often have part-time work and it really is enough to work with one family. “The range of volunteers is great, there’s no particular profile but certainly the young grannies are there – mums with young children and grandmothers. All of them have something that is unique.” In her own time as a volunteer working with families she’s met sources of aid from all walks of life. “We’d liaise with the mental health social worker often for mums with mental health difficulties. Another contact point would be the Fingal Childcare Committee as well because their remit is to help support community family supports.
“Lots of information gets passed around the group whether it’s through informal little coffee mornings or through phoning the committee.” It could range from finding a pre-school to finding speech therapists and occupational therapists, especially if they’re from overseas they mightn’t know how to approach bodies such as the Mater Child and Adolescent Mental health service. “This is where the volunteer can be such an asset in a family,” she says. Valerie works part-time with Home-Start, so has a lot to pack into the part-time hours. “I have a local board made up of folk from local businesses, from BASE they would be supportive; updating them on what’s happening here, we’d be looking at fundraising activities, grants to apply for, admin things I keep an eye on as well; one of the members on my board is on the national board and he keeps me abreast of what’s going on.” And she’s still partly involved in the school completion programme. The volunteers complete an eight-week preparation course, which introduces them to all the agencies from the public health nurses to MABS. “Volunteers are not there as counsellors, you can’t change things too much in the family, but what you can do is to be there in a supportive way, whether it’s an encouraging word, rather than ‘I want you to fix this’, the preparation course goes through all of that. “We’d often use the water and glass analogy, the mother’s pouring glasses of water for the kids, and her own resources run down if she doesn’t get replenished.” Refilling mum’s glass happens from support from the volunteers, the weekly adult coffee mornings where everything’s discussed from organising a child’s birthday party to what mum can do to dickie up her CV when the time comes. The coffee mornings during the school term time could range from parties for the kids, to a personal development course for families as well as for the volunteers. Valerie said, “We’ve just begun a course for the families, to develop more confidence. Personal development is a first step; looking at their CVs, looking at what they might do after this time of little children clamouring around and encouraging them to think of themselves as people as well as as mums. “Through the adult education service, there is funding for courses for community groups, the Fingal adult education community course runs for eight weeks is one of the courses we’d run here, and it’s very well attended. “You need at least eight, it’s an added bond for the volunteers who do the preparation course together and I expect it will be as positive for the mums starting now.” Valerie has set her sights on Balbriggan, as it’s the next biggest parish that’s looking for its own Home-Start network. “At the moment, Swords attracts people from as far as Oldtown and Loughshinny. Opening in Balbriggan would be our next step.” So if you have one or more children under five years old and would like some support or if you would like to volunteer, either drop into the Swords centre on Seatown Road, or call Valerie on 085-7599430.

Scifest For Swords School Fingal Community College in Swords, was one of eleven schools in the country, who recently hosted a new initiative called SciFest@School which was sponsored by Intel. The aim of SciFest is to encourage a love of science and maths through active collaborative, inquiry-based learning and to provide a forum for students at local or regional level to present and display their scientific investigations. Due to the enormous interest in science from 1st, 2nd and 5th Year students in Fingal Community College, they were in a position to hold an exhibition in their school hall which displayed 44 projects from 86 students. The hall was transformed to display the exhibiting projects and a fun zone provided
various science games, puzzles and brain teasers to educate and entertain the visiting primary school students. Over 400 students from 5th and 6th class from local schools, Swords Educate Together, St. Colmcille’s Girl’s National School, St. Colmcille’s Boy’s National School and Holy Family National School, attended the event. Following the success of SciFest@School, five projects went on to represent the school at SciFest in Blanchardstown Institute of Technology on 9th May last. Every one of the qualified students impressed the judges with their commitment, hard work and love of their chosen topic. Pictured here are the students of Fingal Community College at the recent SciFest@school event.

If this means starting with the cheapest improvements then that is the way to go. A fresh look to your windows can be created by adding new blinds or having your current ones reversed. The window is one of the main focusses in a room and by having it looking good it can give a different look and feel to any room. Coal fires are making a comeback and there is nothing more relaxing than sitting in front of an open fire and relaxing. Small luxuries are so nice and you can have them if you plan your finances well. Treat yourself to a satellite system that suits your pocket and entertainment needs. For many people, the kitchen is considered the “heart” of the home. It is the gathering place of your family and should be a place that is functional, inviting and comfortable. But to give your kitchen a new feel you don’t need to spend lots of time and money on a big project. Here are a few creative ideas that can help change
your kitchen; Clear the counter space. Install an under-the-counter microwave, can opener, spice rack or
toaster. Also, take advantage of wall space and shelving for storing items that might otherwise end up on the counter.
Choose a theme for your kitchen, e.g. Italian, Mexican, 1950’s, classic or modern, and get a few accessories to carry out the theme. Choose a bright new colour for your kitchen. Paint is a great inexpensive way to really change the look of a room. You can paint your cupboards too. Are your appliances working great, but looking worn?

Strictly Champions Crowned At Cricket Club A great night was had at the recent Strictly Come Dancing contest in the North County Cricket Club. Congratulations to Siobhan O’Connor and Gary Ryan on becoming the Man O’War GFC Strictly Come Dancing Champions 2012. Routines were danced to perfection and the
packed house was left in awe thanks to the spellbinding routines. The competition involved twelve couples dancing off for the coveted title. Contestants are awarded points from a panel of judges as well as the audience on the night and though there could only be one pair
of winners, all the couples were fantastic. The fundraiser was a full production show with big screens, lighting and sound production. The contestants got their dancing shoes out to
raise money for their own clubs and charities. A big thanks goes to to all the dancers who put in seven weeks of huge work and effort and made the night one to remember.

Skerries Set For Exciting Rás Finish It’s less than two weeks until teams from all over the world finish the gruelling Rás in the seaside town of Skerries. Large crowds are expected in the town in what is expected to be an enthralling climax of the 60th edition of the famous race. Last year saw huge numbers cheering the riders along the final stage route. The final stage will be a difficult one. On leaving Cootehill, the speed will be on. There is a hard climb up from Slane, then on to the familiar
climbs of Pluckhimin, the Cross of the Cage, then two laps of the Black Hills. Hopefully there’ll be another tremendous reception in Skerries; the Swords cycling club, the Skerries C o m m u n i t y Association, the Chamber of Commerce and others put in a lot of hard work each year, and it’s proved to be a wonderful finish to the race. Skerries will once again celebrate the final stage finish by hosting a massive street party from 12.30pm on Sunday
with a range of activities for all ages including street games, funfair, music
and dance, face painting, magic shows and farmer’s markets.
A reminder that the Ras finishes in Skerries on Sunday, 27th May next.

Fun Promised At Swords Cricket Club The newest sporting club in Swords has been officially launched. Swords Cricket Club promises to to feature plenty of fun and games in the upcoming Summer months. The club, which was recently launched by County Mayor, Cllr Gerry McGuire, will play its games at Newbridge Demesne in Donabate. The new team was formed by a group of cricket fans, who were keen to bring the sport to the North County. As there was originally no established cricket club in the Swords area, they started a new club which has formally entered this year’s Leinster Leagues. The club will play their first ever home game on Sunday, May 20th at their all weather pitch in Donabate. If anyone would like to register a team or get involved, please contact the club. Watch this space for news of the clubs up and coming Summer games.

CROATIA Fishermen Queue To catch Wish Fish Fisherman in Croatia are rushing to catch a large gold-coloured fish that reportedly grants a wish each time in exchange for being put back in the water. A fisherman from the town of Ozalj said: " I was about to go home when I hooked the fish. I put it back in the water, saying I hoped to catch it again. And I did. As a joke I wished for something and it came true.”
