Pitches Dilemma For Fingallians GAA Club Fingallians GAA club in Swords, one of the oldest established clubs in the country is facing a crisis regarding its ability to facilitate the increasing number of children who wish to play football and hurling. This has come about due to the lack of playing pitches available to the club. The club has made an appeal to the Council to provide them with extra pitches to help them to continue the excellent service they provide for children for many years. Indeed, they have circulated the contact details of the local representatives to all members, in an effort to garner support in their efforts to acquire new pitches. The recently released CSO figures show that the North County region has increased in population by a whopping 16 per cent since the last census. This alone puts increasing strain on all sporting clubs in the area, and as Fingallians is situated in the heart of Swords, the most populated area in the county, the

There was great news for Lusk last week, with the announcement that a secondary school is likely to be built there. Also, a handful of new primary and secondary schools are to be built in the North County over the next six years in a school building programme announced by the Minister for Education. Former County Mayor and Lusk resident, Ken Farrell has expressed his delight that Lusk has been given the green light as a likely area for a post primary school. Farrell told the County Leader: “This has been due to the work of the council in securing a suitable site and offering it to the Department of Education, who have purchased it. This decision will be particularly welcome by the people of Lusk, whose children have been like ‘sheets in the wind’ in pleading with neighbouring parishes to accept their children for secondary education.” Farrell continued, “For too long, students from Lusk have had to wait until the last moment to be enrolled, because schools can sometimes prioritise students from their own areas. This has effectively isolated children from the area, who have had to struggle to find secondary schools near them. This welcome development is long overdue.” he concluded.

Benefit Night in Balrothery
The 164th Brackenstown Scout Group celebrated their 30th anniversary, with a family fan day held recently. The scouts were celebrating 30 years in the Brackenstown parish and also used the day out as a first fundraiser for a trip to the South of France in July, with 60 scouts and venturers expected to make the trip. A great day was had by all with the whole community getting in on the action, including the Civil Defense, who provided and manned their very own fire engine for the day. The scout group can now look forward to the trip at the end of July with all excited to attend. Here’s to another 30 years in the parish.
The ninth annual fundraising night in aid of Temple Street Children's Hospital took place on 24th June last in The Balrothery Inn. The event was started by Balrothery resident, John Jones. Although decades have passed since he went there as a child, John still remembers the help and care received in Temple
By Roxana Neag Street Children's Hospital. “I was there years ago and two of my daughters were also there. I think everyone in Dublin was there at some time or other,” he said explaining that this is a reason enough to return the service to those who helped him and his family. “It has always
been a great success. I do not even have to sell it as an idea. People just come in and help as much as they can,” he said. “We had children in Temple Street Hospital. Now we have grandchildren going there when they need to be treated. This is an opportunity to thank the hospital staff,” said Maire Garland, one of the fundraisers.

Swords Youths Learn Valuable Lessons Donabate Teacher
Retires After 40 Years Service By Kieran Dunne
A group of eleven young people at Swords Youth Service have learned some valuable lessons in completing a two-day alcohol and knife crime awareness programme in conjunction with An Gardai Siochana. The programme, which was completed Tuesday 28 June last, was held by group leader, Geraldine Robertson, and three local community officers. It involved the education of knife crime and the danger of carrying a knife while also teaching the group the effects of alcohol abuse. A series of games and events were acted out by the group and officers, who sportingly took part in role play challenges. The idea behind the initiative was to try and prevent knife crime and alcohol abuse from an early stage, while also building a rapport between
young people and the Gardai. Speaking to the County Leader, Sergeant Kevin Toner said: “Hopefully by doing these programmes of Gardai intervention with the young people that it will prevent future crimes such as these taking place further down the line at age seventeen or eighteen.” “It is also very beneficial for the young people to be interacting with the Gardai, so that they can say hello out on the streets.” Pictured getting their certificate from two-day alcohol and knife crime awareness programme in Swords are: Back L-R: Chris Barker, Daryl Keogh, Garda Catherine Dillon, Sergeant Kevin Toner, Adewale Adeeeye, Angelo Mohammed Tunde, Garda Pamela Harte, Gemma Cronin and Dylan Cantwell. The occasion was marked with a social gathering in the Harp Bar, Swords, on Wednesday 29th June last. Rush Gets A Boost From Tesco There is some good news for Rush as supermarket giant Tesco confirmed that it would create 450 jobs in stores in Dublin and Kildare, with Lusk being a major part in the operation. plans for the Tesco store were in the works but now we have conformation. Coffey that he hopes the store will provide a big business boost for Rush and also help smaller local traders by keeping people in the town: “If the people can stay here in Rush to shop as
opposed to going to other towns, I think it will really give local businesses and Rush in general the boost it needs. It might even bring in residents from other areas which would be terrific,” he said. “I can see this development being very good for the town and its residents.” The Tesco store is set to open in early December this year, just in time for the Christmas season.

Free Family Fun Day Set To Ignite Balbriggan Balbriggan Town Centre 24th July 2011, 12.00pm - 8.00pm An imaginative and exciting initiative, based around road safety is set to bring fun, enjoyment and community spirit to the centre of Balbriggan. It is proposed to have organised pedal go-kart races on Sunday 24th July 2011 which are bound to create great excitement in the town. This event is totally free and is an opportunity for Balbriggan to showcase its exceptional community spirit, which was so evident during the recent Summerfest. It will take place between 12 noon and 8 pm and will result in traffic restrictions in the town centre during this time. This unique event is the brainchild of The Balbriggan Formula Fun Committee, with the support of Balbriggan Town Council and
Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce. Ian Lawless, Chairman of Balbriggan Formula Fun said, “The feeling was that the town was suffering somewhat and needed a boost to re-ignite it. The idea of promoting the town, while at the same time, promoting road safety and awareness amongst youngsters was very appealing.” He went on to emphasise that the day was all about fun and families, with entertainment provided for the enjoyment of all. “It will be a free, family fun day where youngsters can compete against each other, while learning all about road safety in the process. The age groups are 8 to 9, 10 to 11, 12 to 13 and 14 to 15. There will be a total of 16 karts for each age

category (four karts in each heat), as well as novelty races and traders races for those over 16 years of age. Following the heats, the winners of each heat will advance to the final. As there is expected to be huge interest in the event, registration to compete in the races will take place the day on Saturday 16th July 2011 from 12 noon to 2pm. Entry is by way of Registration Form only, which is also printed on this page. A lottery will then take place to decide who the lucky winners are, who will race for glory. The initiative has the support of the Road Safety Authority and Fingal County Council Road Safety Division. The races will take place on a demanding course and will require great skill, balance and nerve to safely navigate the well thought out course. The pedal karts will be provided by Balbriggan Cycling and Angling shop. A carnival atmosphere is expected and well known rocker, Brush Shields and his band, Skid Row will be the headline act for the day. Family fun and musical entertainment will be provided in the Quay Street car parks. There will also be an opportunity for younger children to pedal mini gokarts on a junior race track. To add to the family fun, there will be bouncy castles, face painting, a food and craft fair, as well as a motor exhibitors’ area, where local motor companies will show off their wares. Already there has been a very positive response from
Prix venue in Fuji last weekend. Ian Lawless is delighted with the response so far, when he said, “We are lucky to have some excellent sponsors, including Moriarty SuperValu/Bracken Court Hotel, Balbriggan Credit Union, Bridgestone Tyres and Hamilton Park Nursing Home, while North County Leader newspaper will provide the media sponsorship for the event. Indeed the local Credit Union will hold their latest Car Draw, which will add further interest to the day”. Lawless was delighted to have the support of local lady, Gertie Shields, who is the chairperson of the Mothers Against Drink Drivers organisation (MADD). “I am delighted that Gertie Shields has accepted our invitation to be patron of Balbriggan Formula Fun. As you are aware, Gertie has a proven track record in highlighting the issue of road safety and will help us in promoting this aspect of the festival,” he said. It is also hoped that either Gay Byrne (Chairman) or Noel Brett (C.E.O.) from the Road Safety Authority will take time out from busy

motor related companies to the idea, which is seen as an ideal opportunity to display the latest cars and technology. Balbriggan Formula Fun are also hoping that one of the world’s top Formula 3 drivers, Gary Thompson from Donabate will attend. Gary, one of Ireland’s brightest motor sport prospects, continued his push for the Japanese F3 Championship National Class title with two podium finishes at the former Formula One Grand
schedules to attend the event and promote the idea of road safety to the participants. In the event of this initiative being deemed a success, Ian Lawless hopes that it may become an annual event that will attract visitors from far and wide to the town. It may well be seen as a template for other towns in the region to copy and may prove to be the breakthrough that the town so badly needs in terms of showcasing its many attractions. So, remember to fill in the Registration Form on this page to be in with a chance of participating in one of the races.

Rooftop Garden Party Hosted by Fingal Dublin Chamber and D15 Chamber
Robbie Callanan (St Finian's GAA Club), Valerie Deasy (Alliance Insurance), Paul Doyle (John Doyle Distribution) and Frank Furlong (AIB Airside).
Naomi Gargan (Absolute Office), Barry Gargan (Absolute Office) and Eileen Doyle (John Doyle Distribution).
ingal Dublin Chamber and D15 Chamber jointly hosted a very successful Garden Party at the Wright Venue in Airside, Swords on Thursday, 30th June last. This was an informal social evening, which attracted a large gathering. It provided a great opportunity for members to meet and network with colleagues from other businesses. It was held on the rooftop garden on a gloriously sunny evening. Guest of honour was local TD and Minister for Health, Dr James Reilly, who spoke passionately about Metro North and the importance of its delivery to an area which has a 16 per cent population growth. “It is essential to the growth of the area,” he said to widespread approval of all present. The Minister also spoke about highlighting our wonderful assets, like our harbours and beaches and that we have constantly undersold the North County as a region of tremendous potential and of our need to promote it further. Recently elected County Mayor, Gerry McGuire was equally vocal in his support for Metro North and spoke of his total commitment to seeing it ‘over the line’ during his term of office. Other speakers included the presidents of the respective chambers, Dave Donnelly and Siobhan Moore.

Balbriggan Retailer Angry At Lack Of Courtesy Balbriggan businessman, Anthony Murphy from Goldsmiths Jewellers in the town has expressed his anger and frustration at the lack of courtesy shown to him by a building contractor. When Anthony turned up for work last Wednesday morning, he had no idea that his shop would be effectively closed for a number of hours, due to the footpath being dug up. He told the County Leader, This is a gross discourtesy shown by contractors, FS Developments who never consulted me about the work being done outside my shop. Had they informed me beforehand, there would not have been a problem,” he said. Goldsmith Jewellers is situated at a particularly dangerous junction. One of his customers was a lady with impaired vision, who found it extremely difficult to travel safely in the vicinity of the shop and “could have been injured,” said Anthony, who maintains that this work could have been done at a time to suit everyone, with minimal disruption. He says that the contractor “did not want to incur extra overtime costs, and thus used business hours in a most selfish manner without any consideration for my business,” he fumed. He also wants to know about when the maintenance programme will begin and who is going to maintain the paths to a high standard. “Responsibility for cleaning up falls on the retailer,” he said.

The Old Borough National School marked 10 years at its present site on Church Road, Swords with a memorable ceremony. To celebrate the occasion, a beautiful mosaic, entitled ‘Our Town,’ was unveiled in the entrance foyer by glass artist, Deirdre Rogers. Ms Rogers, along with each class in the school, created the piece in which Swords Town is depicted through a series of broken glass and tile assortments. The decision to mark the 10th year anniversary with a mosaic was taken to acknowledge 2011 as the Year of Craft. Speaking to the County Leader, School Principal, Ms Anne-Marie Woods reflected on the last decade. “Since moving to the new school here in Church Road, we have welcomed a large number of diverse students of all nationalities, which we also provide for through a part-time English language teacher and other assistants,” she said. “It’s just great. All these students were involved in creating the mosaic. They started by looking at the buildings they were going to use, then by drawing it, followed by their own little mosaic using materials which were then used by Deirdre in the studio,” concluded Ms Woods.
