Landowner Blasts Council The fallout from the building of the proposed new Super Sewage Plant in the North County showed its human face, when one of the landowners involved spoke to the County Leader about the resultant stress he and his family are enduring.
By Patrick Finnegan Nicholas Jones farms land at Newtowncorduff and part of his holding is one of the designated sites where the Super Sewage Plant may be located. He has worked this farm for the past 59 years and is utterly distressed at the news that 14 acres of his
land is likely to be taken from him. “What I object to is that we were told that the plant will cater for a population of 700,000 plus. It does not, however cater for the sewage needs of this area. We don’t want everyone else’s sewage,” he said.
The proposed site is directly behind Nicholas’s home, between the M1 motorway and the old N1 and he maintains that the prevailing
wind blows from the new site to his home. He said, “This means that the inevitable stink will engulf our home, Corduff National School, as well as Dun Emer housing estate in Lusk.” Jones’s daughter, Fionnuala Girvin was adamant that this will pose a genuine health hazard, especially to the school children at Corduff School,” she said. Nicholas told this newspaper that he can smell the tyres and petrol fumes

The Naul proposed site for the Toxic Ash plant is also visible from his house. “I received a registered letter in the post telling me that my land was to be considered as suitable for the Super Sewage Plant. They told me it would be alright,” he said. His daughter Fionnuala was less convinces and said: “but all Fingal County Council sewage plants smell.”
Jones was told when he contacted Peter O’Reilly, the chief engineer for the project about mobile sewage, that he did not rule it out to my satisfaction. This could potentially mean that sewage may be transported from all over the country to the new plant,” he said worriedly. Nicholas is adamant that the fact that seven of the parcels of land are so close together is a clever ploy by the council to divide and conquer. It is designed to get people fighting amongst themselves.

Speaking to the County Leader, Swords Tidy Towns chairman, Des Becton, highlighted the need for the area’s renovation, attributing the walkway’s decline, in part, to the heavy vehicles which back out on to it from local businesses. “This is something we’ve been talking to the County Council about since 1998. It has gotten to the stage were the walkway has become neglected and as a result is one of the litter black spots in Swords,” he said. “We’re looking, in the immediate
future, to have the whole area tidied up. We’re hoping to draw up a plan whereby we’d have public lighting introduced to the walkway. At the moment, the area lends itself to anti-social behaviour in the evenings…and we’d be looking for something to be done soon, so that when the plan is drawn up by the Council, that it wouldn’t take a number of years to introduce,” he concluded. The walkway stretches from Swords Castle down behind Swords Main St and out into the Ward Rivervalley Regional Park at the Old Schoolhouse pub. It is hoped that the work will be carried out on the walkways with the view to enhancing the river and its surrounding areas’ appeal. A clean up of the river itself is also being considered.
More Good News For Dublin Airport Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) has welcomed the announcement that United Airlines will operate a new daily direct Dublin-Washington D.C. service from next June. United will fly from Terminal 2 at Dublin Airport to Washington’s Dulles International Airport, which is one of its East Coast hubs, and to more than 80 onward connecting destinations. Dublin Airport will now offer passengers 10 direct scheduled destinations in North America with services to Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte,
Chicago, New York, Newark, Orlando, Philadelphia, Toronto and Washington DC. “We are delighted that United is adding a Washington-Dublin service to its schedule and look forward to working with the airline to help promote this excellent new service on both sides of the Atlantic,” said DAA’s
Director of Strategy, Vincent Harrison. “This new year-round daily service will make Ireland an even more accessible destination for business and leisure travellers from the east coast of the United States and also adds a new direct US destination from Dublin,” according to Mr Harrison. “Direct air access stimulates business between cities and economies and we are confident that this new route will bring significant benefits,” he added.

Donabate Portrane Dramatic Society Anniversary Donabate Portrane Dramatic Society is celebrating its 75th year and is currently in rehearsals for their autumn production which consists of two one-act plays. The first play is ‘Albert’ by Richard Harris, “Albert” is like your average EU summit; a Finn, an Italian and an Irishman bypass the language barrier and manage to misunderstand each other perfectly, with, like most EU summits, disastrous results! The cast includes Paul Keogh, Dagmar Baar, Aengus Gordon and is directed by Paul Keogh. In the second play, ‘Last
Tango in Donabate’ by David Tristram. Donabate and District Amateur Dramatic Society is in trouble. The membership has dwindled to four - the audiences aren’t much bigger - and if they don’t come up with some rent money soon, they’re going to be thrown out. “There’s only one thing that sells tickets these days” argues Gordon, the Chairman, - “Sex!” Thus begins the chaotic and hilarious build-up to an evening of extraordinary homegrown drama - an evening the locals would never forget! The cast includes Liz Walsh, Brian O’Hanlon, Lisa Buckley, Cathal Fitzgerald and is directed by Noelle Corcoran. The plays will be staged in Keelings Little Theatre (Donabate) on November 16, 17, 18, 20, 24, 25 and 27 at 8:30 pm.

together. The group is currently busy with all kinds if innovative projects locally and are planning a meeting later this month to invite suggestions from local residents for projects they would like to see off the ground. “We want to encourage and support the growing number of creative local groups and projects in Donabate and we need all kinds of innovative people and projects as we work together towards a postive future in Donabate and Portrane,” a spokesperson for the group said. You can go to: www.bettertogether.ie to vote and there will also be an opportunity to donate to the cause if you wish to do so.

Sense Of Isolation In Wake Of Metro North Decision The demise of Metro North has come as a massive blow to residents and businesses in the North County and beyond. Local Minister for Transport, Leo Varadkar finally turned off the life support machine to the project last week, amidst cries of anger from local representatives and leaders of the business community in the area. By Patrick Finnegan mention construction work, comes hot on the heels of the news that the North County is to house a Super Sewage Plant. It seems quite extraordinary that the youngest, fastest growing area in the entire country,
CEO of Fingal Dublin Chamber, Tony Lambert said, “The government’s decision to allow the commencement of linking the two Luas lines is to be welcomed, it is only part of the jigsaw. Metro North is also a key element. Whilst

containing an international airport and world leading companies does not have a rapid rail system. The perceived ‘nasties’ like Nevitt Super Dump, the Toxic Ash facility in Naul and now the Super Sewage Plant are queuing up to find homes in the North County, but not Metro North. The irony of the situation was not lost on local councillor, Darragh Butler (FF), whose tweet can be viewed here. The short straw appears to be continuously picked by this region when it comes to beneficial projects and the feeling of anger and rejection is palpable everywhere. County councillors and local activists maintain that the decision is ‘particularly galling’ when one considers that three senior cabinet ministers represent the area that would benefit the most from Metro North, without a word from any of them. Deputy Clare Daly (SP) told the County Leader: “This is a very shortsighted action by the government. Metro North is not a vanity project; it is a key piece of public transport infrastructure. Thousands of people from Swords and beyond are sitting in traffic every day, costing the economy money. Metro North would have put people back to work. It’s a shame when you think that useless projects like the Super Sewage Plant, which will cost a staggering €2.7 billion are proceeding,” an angry Daly said.
money is not available, we will push for Metro North to proceed when money becomes available. The long term strategy for public transport in the greater Dublin region must look at fast rail systems that can connect people and businesses throughout the region. Metro North is probably the best researched and strategically planned public transport project ever in the history of the state. In its time it will deliver economic development on a scale suitable to the region,” he said. Alan Farrell TD (FG) was optimistic that Metro North will have a future. “I am committed to ensuring that Metro North will be delivered to the people of Dublin, connecting the city centre to the airport and signifying our commitment to this worthwhile investment. The Government will review Metro North in 2015, by which time I hope the government have succeeded in getting on with the job of bringing back economic stability to this country. Greater Dublin Area strategic planning has identified a significant transport deficit on the north side of the city. Through the work of local authorities over the past number of years, large tracts of land in the vicinity of Swords and the airport have been earmarked for job creation. I believe that when Metro North is delivered it will be a significant driver in job creation.”

Charlie Weston and David Moore from the Fairshare Action Group attended the meetings and spoke about the struggle that Fairshare had in ensuring that Donabate and Portrane were not chosen as the preferred site. All local businesses got a sheet asking that they learn a bit of Irish, change their signs to Irish, and to run an event or offer that coincided with the day. Speaking to the County Leader, Trish Carey, from TTDP, described the wonderful day of cultural festivity: “I remember going in to Cates Cafe for breakfast and hearing a man who was with his young daughter and he started counting out sugar packets in Irish to her. it was lovely. The events were packed all day, and the businesses really got into the swing of it.” The preliminary rounds are to air on TG4 in January and February while a live final is to take place in March of next year.

As usual, this event attracted a large gathering and marked the end of a long, successful season for the Tidy Towns committee. A total of six awards were presented on the night. Chairperson of the committee, Anne Doyle told the County Leader: “Presenting our town to its full
potential was never more important than now. We need to attract visitors and we need a town that keeps the residents’ spirits high. Over 800 towns and villages entered the National competition this year and Skerries is up there, a mere seven points behind the overall winner. She had nothing but praise for the people who volunteer their help to the tidy town cause each year. “However hard our

FREE GYM MEMBERSHIP Smitten With Knittin’ For almost 20 years the ladies of Balbriggan’s senior citizens group meet to share their love of knitting. Every Thursday, around 30 women (armed with planty of wool it has to be said) meet up to continue their artistic activity which was started over two decades ago and is still going strong today. The group began all those years ago when some of the Senior Ladies took the personal development courses in the community centre in Balbriggan. “It’s a social gathering for women and a great therapy as you get older. It’s wonderful that we’re still going after so many years!,” said Molly Wherity who along with Tina Maurey, founded the group in 1990. Molly and Tina are now the grand age of 82 and after so many years of practice are known as the ‘knitting professionals’ of the group. “We know we’re just a small group but It’s really a great community to be a part of. it gives you the opportunity to meet people and keep in touch with others in the area,” concluded member Erika Russell. With those dark evenings here, winter is ready to grace us with its cold presence. All weather related issues aside, should you wish to revamp your home for the upcoming Christmas season, follow our tips below and see your home undergo a festive transformation:
Light It Up Come Christmas time, its safe to say that we can all afford to go a little overboard when it comes to adding lights around our home. With this in mind, its all about the strategic placing of lighting to make your proposed look work. If for example, your Christmas tree is the centre piece in your room, you may only need some soft lighting scattered around the rest of the room to enhance things. The right lighting will give your home the perfect cosy look this Christmas and should you wish to purchase new lights (festive or otherwise), we have an array of shops located here in the North County that will help make your choice easier.
A Festive Bathroom There are different bathroom vanities and decorations which can add a perfect blend to your bathroom. It’s the little things that really make a big difference here. Try some new bath mats, new colour schemes for your towels and add that Christmas sparkle with some festive soaps or scented candles where you can. These provide a nice aroma to your bathroom with hundreds of scents available, all of which can be bought in a wide range of shops in the North County.
Add A Coat Of Paint Paint can totally transform existing furniture and walls. This allows you to create a design style that’s simple and won’t burn a heavy hole in your pocket. You’ll have to think out side the box and discover your own personal tastes to make a room that is

interesting and restful at the same time. Choosing warm colours such as red or brown will give your home an instantly warmer look and spruce it up nicely for Christmas too.
Warm Up Around The Fireplace In the cold depths of winter, fireplaces are not only practical but add ambience and warmth to your home. Should you have one, it is possible for you to choose designs and motif for your electric fireplace heaters. Some are also using electric fireplaces aside from wood, but its really a matter of knowing what’s best suited for your home and personal taste too.

North County Lions Unite For Aoife
by Caroline Heffernan
Three local Lions Clubs in Malahide, Howth/Sutton and Portmarnock recently came together to organise a concert in the Grand Hotel in Malahide. The concert was held to raise vital funds for brave pupil Aoife Williamson from St. Michael’s House Special National School, Baldoyle. She is clever and bright, always cheerful and is the life and soul of the class but because she has cerebral palsy she cannot speak and often has difficulty in communicating her needs. However, thanks to her new ‘MyTobii’ Speech Generating Device she will soon be able to communicate with everyone. ‘My Tobii’ is essentially a computer which she can operate by using her gaze on the screen instead of her fingers on a mouse or keyboard. Thanks to the incredible support from the local community, who gave generous personal donations, organised a cake sale, had whip-arounds, organised sponsored walks and ran a bridge evening, a magnificent €23,000 was raised

North County Shoebox Appeal The Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal is well underway in the North County and volunteers are hopeful that this will significantly increase the number of gift-filled shoeboxes it sends to needy children around the world this Christmas. The Team Hope ‘Cup of Hope’ will be
presented as a ‘Thank You’ to the county with the biggest increase in shoeboxes collected this year. Speaking to the County Leader about the Appeal, Philip Denner said, “We are experiencing a really good response from the people in the North County. We are hopeful that we can really increase the numbers of boxes this year and bring home the Cup of Hope to our county. The gifts can be things like copy books, crayons and small toys. Every
single Christmas shoebox counts.” Shoeboxes should be wrapped in Christmas paper (the lid separately) and it’s up to the donor to choose who they’d like to receive the gift and the age group it is suited for. All the information about how to pack the box, suggestions as to suitable items, a sticker to mark the box and an envelope for the €3 is in a leaflet which is available from local co-ordinators via the website www.teamhope.ie.

Swords Students Receive Awards Swords students from Colaiste Choilm and Loreto College who took part in the Swords Lions Club sponsored Peer Education Alcohol Awareness Programme last year (Transition Year - TY) were each awarded a certificate of achievement. The presentation was made by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr Andrew Montague, at an event organised by Dublin Lions Club in the Mansion House recently. The programme is now in its seventh year with the two Swords colleges involved for the past three years.
By Jennifer McShane Initially, the teachers are trained in the programme and provided with teaching materials. The transition year students are then trained over 8/10 sessions. On completion of their training they work in teams teaching either 1st Year or 2nd Year classes about the illeffects of alcohol. They use the materials supplied and material from their own research to address the issue of alcohol abuse. While the TY students run these classes there is always a teacher present.
Maurice Kealy from Swords Lions Club explains that the costs of training and materials, and attendance at the awards ceremony is borne by Swords Lions Club. “We are very proud of the success of the project and the enthusiasm with which the teachers and students alike approach the programme each year,” he said.

30,000 DRIVERS TRAINED CPC.IE, Ireland’s CPC specialists have now trained over 30,000 drivers in their “nationally acclaimed” Driver and Transport Management CPC (Certificate of P r o f e s s i o n a l Competence) Courses. CPC.IE has been delivering Transport Training Courses for 25 years at 30 venues throughout the country. All professional Truck and Bus drivers must now attend a one day training course per year and according to Tony Hynes of CPC.IE, whilst a lot of drivers were hesitant and sceptical about the course initially, the feedback has been brilliant. The drivers who have attended the Driver CPC modules with CPC.IE are extremely enthusiastic about the course and have praised the practicality of the content. In the current economic environment operators have been very impressed with the cost
savings which can be applied to the bottom line. Others, because of the relevance of the subject matter, have even attended the course even though they are not obliged to. For example Orla Canton, who did a Transport Manager CPC course with CPC.IE, attended the Driver CPC Module 1 training recently, even though she is not obliged to do this training. Orla enthused that “this course is brilliant and, even though I didn’t have to do it, I found it very useful, money saving, great value and totally practical”. The annual deadline (for all drivers with licences from before Sept 10th 2008) - all professional bus drivers must have their 4th Driver CPC Module and all professional truck drivers must have their 3rd Driver CPC Module completed by September 9th 2012.

more real, is absolutely to be welcomed.” The changes will begin on a phased basis in 2014 with the first new examination taking place three years later. Amongst the criteria for the new exam is a limit, on the number of subjects available for sitting. Patricia Hayden, principal at St Joseph’s Secondary School, Rush said, “The present Junior Cert rewards an ability to remember a lot of facts. The new system is skills based and sets out to reward the how as much as the what and will allow students to get credit for work that shows they can apply knowledge and solve problems in a range of situations.”

Tony has been inundated with enquiries from the haulage and passenger industry for the Driver CPC course and this should be seen an excellent reflection on the industry and on how positively the training is being received. “This training is a win/win situation for everyone concerned and most importantly will promote excellence in road safety and accident prevention” according to Tony Hynes of CPC.IE. Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked you for many favours. This time, I ask you for a very special one. Take it Dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your broken heart, where your father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour and not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favour will be granted no matter how impossible. Never known to fail. CH
