Demand For Action The news that the Swords barber has surrendered his lease to the County Council is widely seen as the final obstacle to the County Council’s plans to finally open up Swords Castle from the North Street side of the town. Swords Man Bids For ‘Mr. Personality’ Title County Leader
EXCLUSIVE Swords man, Richard Fleming is about to make a name for himself later this week, when he represents Dublin in this year’s Macra na Feirme Mr. Personality contest. Twenty two year old Richard, who lives on Richard Fleming Rathbeale Road in Swords is a member of North County Macra. He was flabbergasted when he was selected to represent his county at the prestigious event, which will take place in Kilkenny on Friday, 19th and Saturday, 20th April. Speaking to the County Leader, Richard explained how the whole thing came about. “I’m a new member of Macra, having heard about the organisation from my cousins. They encouraged me to join. I’m not from a farming background, although my parents are. I put the idea to the back of my mind. Then I decided to attend one of the local meetings in Swords and at that meeting, I decided to join up.” “It was after attending the local meetings that I decided to enter the Mr. Personality competition for the fun of it, but never thought I would be selected. “He went on to explain that there is a popular misconception that you have to be from a farming background to join Macra. “You don’t need to have any knowledge of farming to join,” the DIT student said. He is unsure about what to expect at the convention. “I believe that they ask you about your most embarrassing moments and quiz you about your hobbies and about yourself. “It’s a bit like doing your driving test - you don’t know exactly what’s around the corner,” said the affable Richard. There will be 26 contestants in the final on Saturday night and, despite the presence of some very stiff opposition, Richard is confident of bringing home the title of Mr Personality to Swords at the weekend. The prize for winning is a trophy, as well as a small cash prize.
local authority. Cllr Tom Kelleher told the County Leader that, “a joint motion from the Swords councillors demanding that the momentum is kept going and that the castle be opened up immediately.” Kelleher has been very vocal in the past about the need to demolish the buildings that are in Council ownership, that are blocking the views of the castle to passing motorists and pedestrians. Up to now, this has not been possible, as the barber’s lease was not finished. Now this has all changed. Kelleher said, “We now demand that Swords Castle be exposed. It costs nothing to demolish these buildings, except for the cost of removing the rubbish.”
By Patrick Finnegan they claim that the presence of these derelict buildings is having an adverse affect on business. This area has been

ings. Motorists, including visitors accessing Main Street from North Street, are likely to be delayed in traffic at this busy junction and some of these could be potential investors in the town. The first impression many of them will have of the town are these buildings and the ones on Main Street as well. Many regard it as strange that these buildings, which are in the shadow of County Hall, have been allowed to stay and that no action has been taken by the powers that be to remove them. Instead of having to look at dreary buildings, viewing the castle from this vantage point would be regarded as a pleasant site for motorists as

past, and is a town that attracts visitors from all over the country, most notably on St Patrick’s Day, where the large parade attracted people from far and wide. Residents, who spoke to this newspaper pointed out that this is the year of the Gathering and would be an opportune time to further develop this project. This would be seen as a vital step towards the regeneration of Swords Castle as a major tourist attraction for visitors and as a public amenity and event venue to be enjoyed by all.

On Wheels Balbriggan Meals on Wheels held a Sale of Work recently at their base on Hampton Street in Balbriggan. The fundraising committee worked hard gathering donations to ensure the event was a success. Balbriggan residents came along to support the organisation and bought an item or two and there was also a raffle organised on the day, with great prizes for the winners. “We would like to say a big thank you to people who came along to support us on this occasion as they always do,” said a member of the fundraising committee. Balbriggan Meals on Wheels is a nutritional and social service which has been providing for the community of Balbriggan since 1976. They provide approximately 70 meals on each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday to people in Balbriggan, Balrothery, Balscadden and Man O War. The food is freshly prepared and cooked in the purpose built kitchen in the Parish Centre on Hampton Street. Balbriggan Meals on Wheels receive funding from HSE for the part-time coordinator and a portion of the meals costs, but otherwise have to raise the balance of funding themselves, so the support of the local community is vital for these fundraising events.

Cycling Now Permitted In Newbridge Park Local area activist for Donabate/Portrane, Clara La Combre (FF) has expressed her delight that cycling, after being prohibited in Newbridge Park for some time, is permitted once again. She told the County Leader that a cycling ban was placed on the park late last year, when a few minor accidents were reported, but after receiving some complaints from local residents, she liaised with the County Council and is happy to report that this has been reversed and locals can now cycle, provided they give right of way to pedestrians. “In late 2012 ‘no-cycling’ signs were erected in Newbridge Park by the County Council, and I was very
concerned about this as I know families use the park to teach their children to cycle,” she said. “It really is the safest place to do so and many locals were upset that a cycling ban was put in place because of this. The village is far too busy to teach young children to ride their bikes safely.” “Following consultation with the Parks Department over the past few months, I am happy to announce they have reversed their decision and they have erected new signs allowing the community to cycle once again in Newbridge Park,” La Combre continued. “These new signs allow for cycling as long as cyclists respect the right-of-way of pedestrians. I want extend my heart-felt thanks to those in the Parks Department of the Council for taking this decision which will be of great benefit to the entire community.”

Butler Butler welcomed this news, as he said he had received a number of phone calls and emails regarding the Forest Road and the Rivervalley junction in particular. Further works to reinstate the damaged road areas, due to repairs on the 30” watermain, between Rivervalley and Highfield are planned for later this year.

Swords Pupils Are The Write Stuff By Patrick Finnegan
Pictured are the victorious pupils from St Colmcille's GNS in Swords, who took top honours in the recent National Handwriting Competition. Front row: Celicia Leo (who won the overall national award in Category A) and Alison Roode. Back row: Emelia Verdijeve and Taylor Mooney.
It was a great occasion for four pupils of St Colmcille’s Girls National School in Swords, when they won awards in the EBS / INTO National Handwriting Competition recently. Celicia Leo won first prize in Category A and she was declared as overall national winner, which was a tremendous achievement for her. Another first prize went to Emilia Verdijeve in Category D, whilst Taylor Mooney came second in Category E. Alison Roode also won an award in Category F. To achieve such a high standard took a lot of hard work and practice. “This is an unprecedented achievement for the school,” said a delighted principal, Bernadette Murtagh. “It is not unusual to win one prize, but to have four winners is a wonderful achievement. Everyone in the school is delighted with their achievements and we are extremely proud of the girls. All the girls in the school take great care and attention with their handwriting and the standard is increasing every year,” she said.
Portmarnock Scouts Put Skills To The Test The bitter wind didn’t put the scouts from Portmarnock off when they went on a camping trip to Arklow recently. The entire group were greatly looking forward to the trip, and when they arrived they started the festivities in the traditional scouting manner: they pitched their tents, laid out their sleeping mats and got the campfire going. After a fun filled scavenger hunt, there was a big campfire with lots of the traditional songs, yells and toasting of marshmallows. The next day, the scouts hiked off to Glenart Woods and did some woodcraft activity, played ‘Manhunt’, and then they were invited see around the RNLI station and inspect the fabulous Arklow lifeboat. in the evening, they ventured back to camp where Sarah Kearns and
Ross Walters were formally invested as a patrol leader and brand new scout. Scout leader Peter O’Kelly told the County Leader that these camping trips were very important for the scouts as they got to put all

their training into practice: “These trips are crucial for all our members as they get to put everything they’ve learned into practice,” he said. “We try to plan as many trips outdoors as possible so they can learn how to survive outside. They have plenty of fun as well as learning valuable skill sets and the trips are always really enjoyable. Everyone had a ball on this one, despite the cold weather.”

Balbriggan Students Strongly Protest Library Cuts Following the news last week that up to 50 per cent of hours were to be cut in the opening hours of Balbriggan and Rush library, residents and local students from both areas have contacted the County Leader and expressed their anger and disappointment that such a vital community service is to be slashed. The students of Balbriggan Community College are one such group who are unwilling to stand by and let their feelings on the matter go unnoticed. Upon hearing the news, the students have launched a petition to oppose these cuts and call on the relevant parties to overturn the decision to reduce access hours to Balbriggan Library. The students say that the reduction will deprive them of much needed access, namely, after school hours to research, study facilities and resources associated with the late opening of the library. The students have also passed on their survey to the students in Loreto
Secondary School and plan to contact Ardgillan Community School. Various students who signed the petition got in touch with the County Leader to express their anger with the proposed decision. Leaving Certificate student Jamie Andrews said: “I really object to the library closing early. I use the library as a study area as it is the only place where I can do so. I always use it to do my projects as it is my only option, as I do not have access to a computer or laptop.” Fellow Leaving Certificate student Ben Marry echoed this sentiment also: “Many people in the town, especially the students rely on the library facilities for their computers, books and the study items being available. It’s ridiculous that they should close the library early. How else will the students use it if it’s closed by the time we’re finished school?” Local councillors are set to bring this urgent matter up with the County Council at the next Local Area Meetings, and the students will be eager to hear their response to their petition. Pictured here are students from Balbriggan Community College with their petitions protesting the proposed cuts to the opening hours of Balbriggan Library.

Saving The Swans In Portmarnock By Jennifer McShane Following a reported bird strike incident in January last, concerned residents in Portmarnock, through local Cllr Peter Coyle (Lab), requested a consultation with ESB on how the flight path for swans could be made safer. Prior to the meeting, Cllr Coyle had discussed the matter with Dr Richard Collins who is a national expert on swans in an effort to find a solution to the issue. ESB Networks technician Jim McNally, who covers the Portmarnock area, met with Coyle and a group of local residents on site. He brought the newest version of ‘game guards’ available for display and outlined a plan for their placement on the networks. “This development meeting received a very positive reaction from the group of concerned residents, who are anxious that the area be made safe for the swans,” Coyle told the County Leader. “Jim’s own expertise in wild life, especially birds, put him in a well placed position to assist us with the situation at Portmarnock,”
Pictured here is Cllr Peter Coyle with Networks Technician for the Portmarnock area Jim McNally, discussing how flight paths for swans could be made safer.
Coyle continued. “Over the years he has worked on TV programmes with the late Dr. Eamon De Buitlear relating to wild life in Rogerstown Estuary in Rush.” The overall outcome of the meeting was very positive and Cllr Coyle and the group of residents were confident that this will implement a solution which should greatly improve the safety of flight paths for swans in the area.
Swords Tennis Club Still In Limbo The members of Swords Tennis Club say they are “still in limbo” in regards to the future of their premises. The group are anxious to stay and expand the facilities in their current location in Swords, while the Parks and Operations department in the County Council want to see them moved to another location, where the tennis facilities can be used in conjunction with other community facilities close by.
This issue has been raised with the Council a number of times in the past, yet no viable solution has been reached. Local councillor, Darragh Butler (FF) has been speaking with the group and attempting to aid them with the issue. “He told the County Leader: “The issue the tennis group have is that they see no real reason why they should have to move. They want to expand on their facilities in their current location and are keen

Daly Blasts Cuts To Communion And Confirmation Payments Many North County households are likely to be affected by the Department of Social Protection discontinuing the grants for First Communion and Confirmation costs. The department reduced the grant last year from â‚Ź242 to â‚Ź112, before announcing an end to the scheme, last week. Local TD, Clare Daly (ULA) told the County Leader, “Taking action to deal with the excessive spending around Communion and Confirmations by hard pressed families is a good thing. However, the Government’s method of dealing with this by axing social welfare payments is one which causes concern. It opens up the possibility of children from
lesser off families being excluded and stigmatised because their parents simply cannot afford to dress them in the manner in which their peers are being turned out. She went on to propose a solution to the problem, by saying, “I believe that the way in which this issue Clare Daly TD should be tackled is a holistic one. The Department of Education and the Churches should direct schools that no child is to appear at any of these gatherings in anything other than their school uniform, or a simple robe which could be easily hired and rented for the day as many schools do. This is the only way to deal with this issue properly, rather than just cutting benefits to the lower paid, she concluded.

Dublin Rotary Clubs Fundraise To Assist CRC To Develop A Sensory Garden For Students Last week Neven Maguire threw his weight behind Dublin Rotary Club’s fundraising endeavours to create a Sensory Garden for students at the Central Remedial Clinic (CRC). Neven donated his time to do a cookery demonstration. Two hundred happy foodies bought tickets at â‚Ź25 a head and thouroughly enjoyed his charm and cookery hints. A representative of CRC told the County Leader “There are approx 100 pupils in the CRC School ranging in age from 3 years in the pre-school up to 18 years at the senior end of the school. From their early years, right through to the senior classes, environmental issues are explored, the changing seasons, water, sunshine, growth and plant life. The development of the current garden 'The Secret Garden' enabled the pupils to come out of doors into a safe environment. The pupils all have a physical disability. Many are wheelchair users and have hand function difficulties. The Pictured above is President of Rotary Club of Dublin Fingal, Dave development of the garden, with varying Murray with celebrity chef Neven Maguire levels of raised beds enabled these children of all ages and sizes to access the soil, to feel it, to dig, plant and sow. Within a couple of months, the garden had all types of wildlife, insects, butterflies, hoverflies, bees and ladybirds that the children could enjoy and learn to identify. A sensory kitchen garden would greatly enhance and build on the pupils’ experience in the 'Secret Garden.' To sow and tend herbs, fruit and vegetables for many would be a new experience. The senior pupils also train in independent living skills, including cooking. For these students, to be able to grow their own produce and use them later in their cooking, would be a real experience of independent living. The CRC also has a large canteen, serving the school and clinic clients and staff. It would be a very worthwhile venture for the pupils of the school to supply the kitchen with herbs and salad for the canteen lunches. Working in the school garden might also begin a lifelong hobby for the future or lead to work after school in a garden centre.

Problems For Balbriggan Primary Care Centre The proposed Primary care centre in Balbriggan has had to be redesigned after it was described as “disappointing” by council architects. Farrell told the County Leader: “I am delighted to receive confirmation from the Department of Education that St. Sylvester’s Junior National School has agreed arrangements with its Patron that it will meet the accommodation needs of the junior infants in the Malahide area from September 2013. Following an enrolment crisis where over 30 children were placed on a waiting list for this September, I have continuously engaged with the Department and the Minister for Education in order to ensure that the seriousness of this situation was fully understood, and that a solution was required as a matter of urgency,” he continued. Farrell said that although he was happy with the decision, it was only a short term solution and not a permanent one, which must be reached.

Big Celebrations For Balbriggan Cricket Club Balbriggan Cricket Club are holding a big event on the 20th April in order to raise money for the club. The Balbriggan Town Council have kindly sponsored the Cricket Club and are awarding a memorial plaque to the club in honour of Jack Harper, who established the Balbriggan Cricket Club over 50 years ago. All Jack’s hard work was completely voluntary and for the good of Balbriggan Town. The club is still successfully run by members of the Harper family today. Therefore, the cricket grounds will be inaugurated in honour of Jack Harper. This will take place on the 20th April at the Charity Cricket Fun day. The Charity Cricket Fun Day will be held on the same day, in the Cricket Club grounds (at the back of Balbriggan Parish Church) on 20th April. Grounds officially open at 12:15pm. The Fun Day will feature the local Gardai Pipe Band who will be opening the event, a match between Balbriggan Cricket Club and Dublin Fire Brigade Cricket Team, face-painting, balloonmaking and much, much more. On behalf of Balbriggan Cricket Club, they would love if everyone could come and support the big event. It promises to be a great day for all the family!!
Lusk GAA Club Hosts Charity Tournament On April 7th, Round Towers GAA club in Lusk opened its doors to the Rainbow Arch Charity and let them hold a soccer charity tournament. The day was a huge success and great fun was had by all, with festivities such as a bouncy castle, face painting and more! The eight teams played for around two hours, and the winners of the charity football match were the ‘Balkan Express, who beat ‘Everpool Utd’ in an exciting game. All players got a gift bag and the wining team all got an additional gift of a meal each – donated by the Airport View Hotel. The Rainbow Arch group want to say a big thank you to Round Towers for letting them hold the tournament, and thank you to their sponsors for the kind donations. They would also like to give a special mention all the helpers, especially Olivia and Hannah for the non-stop face painting, to Sandra for running around before and during event, to Tom and Helen for taking over the cooking of the BBQ (and keeping everyone fed!) and finally, Mark Phlelan for organising the football.
Balbriggan Group Thanks Local Schools Balbriggan Dyslexia Workshop has local school children in Balbriggan and surrounding areas to thank for raising €1,766 for the charity by paying for the pleasure of leaving their school uniforms at home. The pupils of Balscadden NS, Gaelscoil Bhaile Brigín, St George’s NS, St Mologa’s NS, St Oliver Plunkett’s School, St Peter and Paul’s School and St Teresa’s NS all handed over €2 to wear their own clothes and dispense with the uniform on ‘Dress Down Day’ for the local charity. The workshop helps local people affected by dyslexia and is held in St Mologa’s School every Tuesday evening from 5.30pm. to 7.30pm. The committee behind the workshops have extended their heart-felt thanks to all the school children who participated in this very successful fundraiser.
Ballyboughal Pitch And Putt Last Sunday week’s pairs scramble winners were Rory Homan and Margaret Kelly, with a net 44. The runners-up were Ronnie Delaney and Frank Hughes. Ten girls from Soul2Sole Dance Academy became Broadway Stars recently when they won the recent “Battle for Broadway” talent contest organised by North Dublin Chernobyl Children International (CCI), to raise much needed funding for their work with the children of Belarus. The competition took place on Easter Sunday night in Kettles Country House Hotel and the atmosphere was electric, with over 400 spectators and performers present for what turned out to be a very entertaining show. Twelve acts took to the stage to show off their talents in the hope of winning the grand prize of €1000. The event was organised by four members from North Dublin CCI, Trina Gilchriest, Peter Rooney, Vanessa Kennerney and Sine Gilchriest. Vanessa Kennerney, secretary for North Dublin CCI explained to the County Leader the work that goes into preparing the show: “There is a huge amount of organisation involved in getting a show up and running. We are totally dependent on the help and generosity of others. From the acts to the judges, to our prize sponsors and those who supported us on the night, none of it would be possible without the help of all involved and we thank them from the bottom of our hearts.” She also wants to say a huge thank you to their fantastic technical team who gave the show a professional finish. The group were thrilled with the success of the night. They had aimed to raise around €5,000 but well exceeded that by raising just under €8,000, a fantastic achievement. The group have been fundraising since October to pay transport costs for a group of children who will come to the North County on 1st July.
Huge Growth For Dublin Airport This Summer Dublin Airport will have an extra 700,000 airline seats this summer, with overall summer capacity up four per cent this year, according to the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA). Dublin Airport’s airline customers are introducing eight new services this year and adding extra flights to almost 30 existing routes. “This is a significant increase in available seats for the summer months at Dublin Airport,” said DAA Chief Operations Officer, Robert Hilliard. “The growth in available seats and flight numbers is positive news for both leisure and business travellers, as it provides additional choice and flexibility for passengers,” he added. The transatlantic market will see the greatest expansion at Dublin Airport this summer, as all of the airlines serving Dublin from the United States and Canada are adding capacity. Overall, there will be an extra 200,000 seats on North American routes during the summer, which is a 17 per cent increase compared to last year. The addition of American Airlines’ new daily service to New York JFK, which commences in June, means that Dublin Airport will have 15 direct scheduled services to North America this year. “Both the United States and Canada are also important sources of inbound tourism so it’s also pleasing to see a strong growth in seat numbers from North America in 2013 as we celebrate The Gathering,” he concluded.
Portmarnock Athletics Club Members and volunteers are sought for a new athletics club in Portmarnock. The club has been set up in association with Athletics Ireland and will initially hold its training sessions for 7-12 year olds on Sundays from 3pm-4pm at the Portmarnock Sports and Leisure Centre, meeting by the bottle bank. We first approached Prout Security Ltd for a quotation on installing a monitored alarm and CCTV system at the construct ion stage of our new Hardware Superstore. They contacted us speedily with a most competitive quotation. We found them to be courteous, professional and met any deadlines required. Their after sales service was second to none, which is vital in today’s business environment. We were so impressed that we also employed Prout Security Systems to install security systems in both of our dwelling homes.

“We can install wired and wireless intruder alarms, which are generally fitted to the windows as vibration sensors to prevent an intruder entering. This is the best practice, as an intruder has not stepped into a premises. We also provide a few forms of communication to the client, via the phone line, texting, voice call and our monitoring station, which is Group 4 Security. Another form of communication, without a phone line is a GSM unit, which uses a SIM card to text you or a radio which transmits directly to the monitoring station,” said Kevin. The company also installs domestic and commercial CCTV, which includes digital video recorders, cameras, power supplies and monitors. With the advancement in technology, you can watch your CCTV over a network, your PC, your mobile phone, on an app, or on all your televisions in the house. They also use a commercial CCTV beam system, which works around the periphery of the building, about five metres out. Kevin explained how this works. “We can square off the building with the beams. We required a new Intruder alarm system and Prout Security were very competitive and completed the job over the Christma s holidays , and this was very much appreciated, as it was time normally spent with your family. This was ideal for the school, as all students and staff were on holidays. The job was completed without any problems and on time. They were clean, efficient and professional in their approach. I would have no problem in recommending Prout Security to anyone.

North County Living by Jennifer McShane
A Hands On Approach Bernadette Coady from River Valley has been living in Swords for the past 23 years and is a community volunteer in every sense of the word. She truly cares about the place she lives and wants to see it looking its absolute best. This she says is what drives her to volunteer with the various groups around River Valley, helping them recruit other volunteers and doing whatever she can to help. Bernadette is currently living in River Valley with her 12 year old daughter Olivia and, like most of our modest North County Living candidates, she is reluctant to speak about her own efforts in her community, instead saying that much more credit is due to those around her. But Bernadette deserves as much credit as any of her fellow volunteers as she generously gives up much of her own free time and efforts for the benefit of those living in the area. She is quick to point out that she is also eager to speak on behalf of all her fellow volunteers, who contribute so much to the local community. “I’ve always loved being a part of community life and loved living in River Valley,” she told the County Leader. “I always got great satisfaction helping others. Whether it be something big or something small, I’ve always believed that every little counts and that a little goes a long way.” Bernadette wants to give a special mention to all the other volunteers who help out whenever things need doing. “I help out and do whatever I can, but I also have so much admiration for the rest of the volunteers who all do so much. A lot of people in the area really work so hard so it’s important to credit them as well.” The River Valley Resident has been a member of Crosscare, an association that amongst other things offers Carer’s Support for over a decade and has very personal reasons for joining. “I was looking after my mother, Teresa after she sadly had a stroke when a nurse recommended the group to me. They’re really fantastic and have given me wonderful support over the years. I’ve really come out of my shell since joining them, they have so many activities on and I even learnt to knit which I could never do before. She has a very active lifestyle and is always up doing something. “I suppose you could say that I’ve a very ‘hands on’ approach when it comes to getting things done around the area. I’ll literally knock on doors to try and recruit people. You could most definitely call me persistent!” All of Bernadette’s and the other volunteers hard work has certainly paid off as River Valley and the surrounding areas are looking better than ever. She has been very busy lately as the River Valley Rathingle Residents Association prepares to enter the Urban Village and Tidy Estate competitions (which are part of the overall Tidy Towns competition), so chances are you’’ll see her out and about
with the other volunteers as they start a big push to get the area spick and span over the next few weeks. Bernadette is well known around River Valley and though she is very humble about her involvement, it’s obvious from our chat that she puts a huge amount of effort into working with all the volunteers to keep things looking their best. Her efforts have also been highly commended by her friend Olive Black who works with the Fingal Voluntary Forum (and was also a North County Living candidate a few weeks back), but she shrugs all this off, saying she’s happy to do it for the betterment of the community. “It’s really a fantastic feeling, knowing you’ve done something nice for someone else and everyone around you,” she continues. “It can be something really simple that makes all the efforts worth it, like seeing the flowers you’ve planted bloom and it’s also lovely to have that sense of involvement. I really enjoy the social aspect of it as well.” She mentions the Residents Association, Swords Youth Service and River Valley Community Centre as being the heart of the community and says that over the years something really positive has happened in the area - the active involvement of the children in many community activities. “A highlight for me has been seeing more and more young people get involved. I’ve noticed more and more younger children helping around the place, and that’s really wonderful to see.” She says that much credit for the younger people’s involvement is down to Ger Robinson of the Swords Youth Service. “She really went back to basics and actively encouraged the younger ones to come and enjoy their own community, and that’s something that I would have been taught by my own mother from a very young age. She had me doing small errands for neighbours and other things, even if I wasn’t that eager!,” she said, laughing. Bernadette says that she has passed these values on to her daughter Olivia. “I definitely think that having that attitude of helping others instilled in you from a young age really makes a difference. My mother instilled it in me, I’m passing it onto my daughter and hopefully in years to come she’ll pass this on to her own children as well.” When she’s not volunteering, she says she loves spending time with her daughter who she is very close to and she loves to write, walking and knit. She also loves travelling and sun holidays, and says her favourite place in the world is the south of France, which she tries to get to once a year. In terms of the future she’s looking forward to get the area ready for the Tidy Towns contest and encourages anyone who’d like to help out to get involved. “Even if it’s just for an hour, it all helps and we’re so appreciative of it,” she concluded.
“It’s really a fantastic feeling, knowing you’ve done something good for the community.”

Aisling Brady Swords The lovely Aisling Brady from Swords is next up as a Dublin Rose of Tralee candidate. The 22 year old is having the time of her life taking part in all the Rose festivities and says she doesn’t want the fun to end. “It was always in the back of my mind that I wanted to participate in the Rose of Tralee,” she told the County Leader. “And finally this year I just decided to go for it. I suppose I missed the hectic social life that comes with being in college and I knew that doing the Rose would mean I’d meet plenty of new people.” Aisling is being sponsored in the year’s Rose festival by Lillies Bordello. Aisling graduated from DCU after

completing her degree in Irish and Journalism and now works as an Assistant Researcher for RTE’s Prime Time programme, which she loves. “I love the excitement of live television and everything about my job. It’s definitely hectic and challenging, but it comes with the territory so I take it in my stride.” She describes herself as a real people person, which is ideal considering the field she works in. “I love meeting people and am fascinated at how everyone is unique and different. A goal of mine for the future would definitely be to get into the direct news reporting side of things, so I’ll be out meeting the people directly and getting their thoughts on different topics.” The Swords lady says she has always been extremely interested in Current Affairs (which she says she gets from her dad), so her work on Prime Time is really perfect for her. “It’s so exciting when we go to air!” Aside from her day job, which she says takes up the majority of her time, she mentions the work she’s done previously. She used to tutor local children in Irish at DCU, which she says she’d love to go back to at some point and says she has never taken a gap year, as she has always liked to be working and busy. She is extremely close to her family; she loves to spend time with her mam, dad, two younger brothers and her little sister who is just eight years old. “I’m so close to my entire family and I especially adore my sister, we spend so much time together. I’ve seen more kids films lately than I have anything else!” She says she is definitely a home bird but would be eager to travel and work in the media abroad. “I’ve always wanted to work abroad and I think there would be so many fantastic opportunities within the media in the United States, so I’m definitely going to venture there one day.” “I’ve always thought it was better to get my experience on home ground first before travelling abroad,” she continued. “Just so you have a strong basis before entering a different media environment.” She describes herself as a social butterfly and says she uses whatever little time she has off to catch up with friends and family. Aisling also is a big fan of staying fit and healthy, and goes to the gym whenever she

can. “I’m very conscious of keeping fit and I’m currently training for the Mini Marathon, which will be fantastic to compete in.” She describes her Rose experience as one of the greatest experiences she’s ever had and says even after this year’s festivities end, she’d love to stay involved with the festival in some way. “This whole thing has just been better than I ever thought it would be; it’s been fantastic, I’ve met so many new people and am having lots of new experiences, even at this early stage.” She finishes off by saying that if she were to be crowned the Dublin Rose, it would be an incredible honour. “It’s really been an amazing opportunity, just being involved and if I were to be the Dublin Rose, it would be unforgettable,” Aisling concluded.

Thank You! Another fine example of the work of local landscaping company, Virgoe McEnery can be seen at the entrance to Knocksedan Demesne, near Swords. As the County Council don’t maintain the green areas in the estate, the residents contribute annually to a Property Management company in order to keep the area in pristine condition. Local resident, Pat Ward is a director of the Knocksedan Management Company and he told the County Leader about how he came to use the services of Virgoe McEnery. “Dave Smith, who is also a director of the management company, and I decided that it would be fitting to have a feature at the entrance to Knocksedan, which would be acceptable to all and that would improve the area. At this time, we were unsure about what sort of feature would be suitable.” He continued, “Our only problem was to employ the services of a company that suited our requirements. In order to get value for money, we shortlisted three landscaping companies. We selected Virgoe McEnery on the basis that we were hugely impressed with what they proposed for the area. They costed a number of designs and I met Michael McEnery on a number of occasions. He came up with a design that fully complimented the estate. We decided on a mound feature that would be safe and be enjoyed by all.” Pat was very impressed with how Virgoe McEnery went about their business. “The service they provided was excellent and they worked in a very timely fashion. They were great at returning calls and you instantly knew you were in good hands. They even completed some unfinished work that the builder Pat Ward, director of Knocksedan had left behind. It appeared as if the project was completed Management Company overnight, such was their speed and professionalism. We have nothing but the height of respect for Michael and his team and how they conducted their business. The quality of their work and the timely fashion in which they undertook the job as well as value for money was a credit to the company,” he concluded.
