Excellent Swords Result A Real Boost of the County Council, which was set up to amalSwords received a massive shot in the arm last By Kieran Dunne gamate the old Environment, Parks and Roads week, with the news that it is officially Ireland’s quick to point to the Council’s new Departments. Great credit is due to all parties involved, especially to the Council’s Swords/ Balbriggan Operations Department and it demonstrates what can be achieved when the community rallies around and pulls together. In 2004, Swords was classified as a Litter Blackspot and in the intervening seven years, the famed North County resilience took over, resulting in this outstanding result. This has come about as a result of the massive anti-litter drive around the town, which is hoped will result in Swords becoming a more desirable place to do business. In the final IBAL survey for 2011, the North County capital finished second overall behind Trim, Co Meath, which collected the coveted prize for the country’s ‘cleanest town.’ Pictured are members of the County Council team who played a significant role in ensuring that Swords received such a high ranking in the IBAL Litter League. Meanwhile, Paul Smyth, the Council’s Head of Operations for Balbriggan/Swords told the County Leader after the announcement was made: “We are delighted that Swords has been placed 2nd in the 2011 IBAL litter survey. This result is reward for all the hard work put in by a number of groups most particularly the Council’s street cleaning crews and Litter Warden Service, the Tidy Towns volunteers, local businesses, the Environmental Awareness Team, schools and of course the citizens of Swords. The challenge now is to maintain the standard.” Speaking to the County Leader, Tony Lambert, CEO Fingal Chamber of Commerce said: “From the beginning of the IBAL surveys, when Swords didn’t do that well, we have taken an awareness of the importance of anti-litter as a major part of our drive to make Swords more friendly to shop in; a more friendly place to do business in, and it is now paying off. This is a major achievement and a great benefit to the business community.” “We want to continue this work, from a Chamber point of view, to make sure that we make the town the number one anti-litter town in the country.” The report on Swords highlighted ‘the wonderful’ achievement and encouraged local residents to ‘appreciate and celebrate’ the result. The town, ‘clean to European norms,’ received ‘A’ grades across all categories with significant improvements to both Main Street and Swords Business Park noted.

Nollaig Na mBan In Skerries
CHINA Ty-pooh-tea Potty wildlife expert An Yanshi has bagged five tons of panda pooh to create a new type of tea. Collage lecturer Yanshi explained “ Pandas have a very poor digestive system and only absorbs 30 per cent of everything they eat. that means their excrement is rich in fibres and nutrients. The tea has a mature nutty taste and a very distinctive aroma while it’s brewing.”
The curtain was brought down on the festive season in Skerries Mills on Friday 6th January last with Nollaig na mBan. This annual event is organised by the Skerries Reading and Writing Groups in conjunction with Skerries Mills.
There was standing room only in the Mills restaurant, as the afternoon was filled with singing, workshops and poetry recitals. It was a wonderful way to spend the afternoon with money also raised for a good cause. Participants could donate €5 in return for an afternoon of culture, humour and a free drink. All profits made will be donated to St. Michael’s House. A fitting way to close off the holiday season and here’s to next year’s event.
New Season At Ballyboughal Pitch And Putt Ballyboughal Pitch and Putt Club shook off the Christmas cobwebs recently, with the first competition of the new season. The first pairs winners of 2012 are Ronnie Delaney and Mary Terry with a net 37 on the back nine. Runners up were Rory Homan and Ann McDonnell. The eagerly awaited games are due to continue on Sunday mornings at 11am weather permitting.

New Jobs At Malahide Castle Welcomed Local TD Alan Farrell (FG) has described the recent jobs announcement for Malahide as a “direct reward for the hard work and good investment that will now reap dividends for the community.” He said, “I am delighted that Avoca have confirmed that it will be recruiting 80 people for its forthcoming tourism and café centre in Malahide Castle. This announcement is a welcome reward for all the hard work by the local authority and the strategic investment of almost €7 million by the Department of Transport, Tourism
and Sport. As a councillor, I was involved with the council and local community groups who have worked very hard to bring the historical site of Malahide Castle to its full potential while making it an economic driver for the area.” Farrell continued, “Since the government approved funding for the regeneration and additions to Malahide Castle last May, it is encouraging to see the direct value of hard work and good investment in an area like Malahide. This will be good news for those who are seeking
employment. Local businesses, shops and retailers can already look forward to an increase in footfall and customers as the numbers employed in the village increase. This is before we see the effects that increased tourism generated from the project has even been considered,” he concluded.

Donabate Gears Up For TV Contest Transition Towns Donabate Portrane (TTDP) recently featured in a new ten part series, the GTeam, where non-Irish speaking communities from all over Ireland are being challenged to begin using their native tongue in their daily routines. ‘An G-Team’ is a new 10 part series on TG4, which started on Sunday last that’s all about getting the country speaking Irish. The town of Donabate was picked, much to the delight of TTDP, following an application process last year. Following their acceptance, the group then had four weeks to plan and organise a GDay (Gaeilge Day) in which a camera crew from TG4 arrived to film the process. While the main focus of the show is on the use of Irish language, it’s also about giving small communities like Donabate, an opportunity to showcase their towns, their heritage and their plans for the future in a very positive light. The best of luck to Donabate, we’ll be rooting fo you!

By Patrick Finnegan Speaking to the County Leader, Butler was full of praise for the work being carried out there by the council, but is frustrated at the amount of time it is taking, due to lack of resources and funding. When an episode of the Tudors was filmed here, it generated a great buzz in the town,” he maintains. He went on to suggest that “the castle, the river walkway behind Main Street and Ward River Valley park should all be linked up to be one fantastic amenity for the people of Swords. This would open up the entire area to cyclists and walkers alike, who could access the castle from as far afield as Knocksedan. This would also be a major attraction for visitors to the town. Just look at the way that Malahide Castle is being used and the tourism that it generates. The same could apply to Swords Castle,” he concluded.

Tickets cost €60 each which will include a champagne reception, four course meal, live band, DJ, a late bar and great prizes to be won. removed. She underwent six months of chemotherapy and thanks to the wonderful staff and support in Crumlin, Mia successfully finished her treatment and was recovering well. However, in November 2010, doctors discovered that her tumour had unfortunately returned, this time affecting her lung. She recommenced treatment two weeks later, this time with more intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Mia is still currently under-
going treatment. According to her mother, Maire Keane: “The return of Mia's tumour highlights the necessity for ongoing research and development of oncology treatment. The money raised will go towards this research, and to the ward itself, which is currently undergoing redevelopment. To date we have raised over €26,000 and we hope to match or surpass this year.” If you wish to receive further information in

Bin Service Reduced in Lusk Village Residents in the Lusk Village estate, who are existing Panda customers are furious that the refuse collection company has reduced their annual black bin collections from 52 to 39, whilst the fee of €88 remains. The County Leader can confirm that former Council customers, who pay €110 per year and €8 per black bin collection, and Social Welfare waiver customers will not experience price increases or a service reduction. In addition to paying the same for a reduced service, residents are concerned that fewer collections will mean overflowing bins and scattered rubbish. This in turn could increase the cost of ‘caretaker duties’, paid to their management company for rubbish removal, which already costs over €4,000 per
By Peter Kearney year. Panda contacted customers on 23rd December to announce that they “are standardising the model and fewer collections will mean “reducing the amount of truck movements”. Resident, Anthony Mason contacted Panda to voice his disapproval but did not receive satisfaction. He also claims that on 7th January, Panda emptied both green and black bins into one truck. Another resident, some days later witnessed a repeat of this. John Dunne, Panda Wheelie Bin Manager said the claims are being investigated and such practice was “a real no no.” He confirmed that the annual fee and the €6.40 black bin collection fee will remain unchanged for 2012.
Panda have said the current system is “for the duration of this coming year” and they will assess it based on the statistics of bin presentation and feedback from customers.

North County Living by Caroline Heffernan
A Volunteer For All Seasons When I phoned Patricia O'Brien to arrange to meet and chat with her about her voluntary work with Meals on Wheels in Portmarnock, we quickly realise we have met before through Patricia's volunteerism with other local community groups. In June this year, I had the privilege of being invited to Prosper Fingal's headquarters in Seatown, Swords on behalf of North County Leader. Prosper Fingal is a government agency which provides educational services for adults with special needs. The event was a day of celebration, as five athletes from Prosper's services were preparing to travel to Athens to represent Ireland in the Special Olympics World Summer Games. Robbie Corr, the team coach paid tribute to Patricia's sterling efforts helping him prepare the team. Patricia's son, Gary did his family and country proud by winning a silver medal in the 400 metres race and when I met up with her, I asked her about their experience in Athens. “It was brilliant, absolutely fantastic. The first day Gary was out running I thought, 'there's my son representing Ireland, can it get any better than this?' To see the effort from everybody on the track from all different countries running or walking was wonderful.” Gary was subsequently awarded Fingal's prestigious Sports person of the Month award for June and is in contention for overall Sports person of the Year to be announced at a gala dinner in the Clarion Airport Hotel in January. “It has been a fantastic year for Gary. Before he went to Athens, he was on the Late Late Show and when he came back he was on Miriam O'Callaghan's Saturday night programme. Miriam proudly displaying his medal.” Patricia continues to assist Robbie Corr as he trains Prosper athletes in ALSAA every Wednesday afternoon. “We all meet in The Star in Swords for lunch first and then the athletes get the 33C bus up and we meet them at ALSAA. I check shoe laces and it takes time when we're preparing for competitions, it's great, I really enjoy it.” Patricia also really enjoys volunteering with Meals on Wheels. “I love it,” she says. “We're a great team and when you're on duty once a month, you find out what's happening in the community,” she says. “Three of us cook 21 dinners in the kitchen at St. Anne's Parish Centre and there's a set menu each day. Our dinner is chicken casserole with bread crumbs on top, mashed potato and carrots, followed by gorgeous homemade apple tart and custard made by Judy. We have two very special helpers from Prosper who join us. Eoin Hall keeps us in chat and Yvonne Dardis, who is brilliant at washing up. She could come and live with me any day,” Patricia laughs.
For Meals on Wheels deliveries, Portmarnock is divided into two areas with two people assigned to each region, one to drive and the other to drop in the meals. Three dinners a week are provided for a nominal fee of nine euro, which covers the cost of the food. In the spirit of shopping local, Patricia explains that all of the meat and vegetables are bought in Smyth's butchers in Portmarnock village. “We collect it on the way in and it's all very easy, we have a great team.” In addition to providing nutritious sustenance, Meals on Wheels also provides personal contact and conversation for an older person who may be living alone. “I don't do deliveries. I might be inclined to stay and chat too much when there are other meals to be dropped off, so I'm happy to peel potatoes and cook back at the centre,” she says. The kitchen used is in the Prosper Fingal Centre in the grounds of St. Anne's Church. The centre is also home to the hugely popular Arch Club which was set up by parents of children with special needs in 1990. The Arch Club runs three sessions a week, providing members and helpers with a place to meet their friends in addition to organising lots of outings and fun activities. Patricia is on the committee of the club which has a registered membership of 30 and enjoys every minute of it. “Gary loves the Arch Club and as a family we get so much from it, that I'm happy to help out.” In early December the Club held a Christmas Fair to raise much needed funds. “It was fantastic. Myself and my two younger sons, Nick and Peter, along with our chef Vera and a couple of other parents helped make 160 apple tarts, 72 mince pies, 15 mince tarts and we sold them all,” she says. I ask her if Gary minds her being so involved in the Arch Club. “Of course he does,” she laughs. “When I drop him down to the Club, he'll say 'you're not staying are you?' none of the members like it when their parents are on duty! Patricia's joy and fulfilment through her work with Prosper Fingal, Meals on Wheels and the Arch Club is evident. A very busy woman, I ask her if she has any other hobbies or interests. “Well I walk Misty the dog. The dog longed for by Gary, Nick and Peter and my husband Terry, but walked by me.” Anyone in the Portmarnock area interested in having Meals on Wheels delivered to their home can contact Margaret in St. Anne's Parish Centre at 8461561 who will pass on their details to Marie Gannon, the area co-ordinator. There are many Meals on Wheels facilities across the North County and information is available from local churches or community information centres in each area. Information on the Arch Club is also available from the Parish Centre.
“We're a great team and when you're on duty once a month, you find out what's happening in the community,”

Stephen Cluxton, Dublin goalkeeper and scorer of that famous point, and former Dub star, Ciaran Whelan, were in Balcarrick Golf Club on Sunday 8th January with that famous trophy, Sam Maguire. On a fine and fresh winter’s morning, the committee of Balcarrick Golf Club put on a great welcome for the two Dublin stars with a jovial atmosphere and some tasty finger food. Four months on and the festive season over, the residents of the North County still can’t get enough of Sam. A full clubhouse was there with kids and parents queuing up to shake hands, get autographs and photos taken with Stephen, Ciaran and the famous trophy. The

club also marked the historic occasion with the presentation of honorary membership to both men by lady captain, Sheila Crilly after a short opening speech by men’s captain, Willie Killeen. After a ‘shotgun’ round of golf the two stars returned to the clubhouse to meet and greet those who came to see them in the late afternoon. It can’t be said enough that the GAA is a voluntary organisation whose strength comes from its volunteers. The goodwill shown by both Stephen and Ciaran in coming to the club, as well as the organisation of the day by members of Balcarrick Golf Club, is a credit to the organisations they all represent.
Pat, Stephen and Clare Cluxton are pictured with the Sam Maguire Cup when the famous Pic: PK trophy paid a visit to Balcarrick Golf Club on Sunday, 8th January last.
