Metro Is The Only Option A
North and TD for much of Swords, Leo Varadkar said, “The Government has not made a decision about any of the major rail projects proposed for Dublin, including Metro North. Major transport projects are being assessed on their potential to stimulate the economy, create jobs, and provide important transport links. But the most important criterion will be affordability. He continued, “Iarnród Éireann recently presented another alternative project to link Dublin city with the airport via a DART extension beyond Clongriffin. This is not a new proposal and has been raised before in a variety of forms. I have asked Iarnród Éireann to prepare a detailed business case for this project. No decisions will be taken before the review concludes in September,” he concluded. Socialist TD, Clare Daly took a totally different view and was particularly dismissive of the proposed new DART extension to the airport. “The idea of extending the DART line instead of building the Metro is a red herring. Such an extension would require major disruption to the DART service, but would not deliver the link between the city centre, Swords and the airport that Metro would.” She said that the decision is likely to be made soon after the government’s jobs initiative and this ‘shovel ready’ project is set to create the very jobs the government is trying to create. Its a shame on the government ministers representing the area if Metro North does not go ahead.” Daly called for cross community support and said, “There needs to be major pressure put on from all sections of the community, business and residential alike to deliver a proper public transport link to the North County. Government TDs, including Minister for Health, James Reilly claim to be supportive of Metro North. Reilly said, “the project is terribly important in terms of the Continued on page 10
worrying surge of uncertainty continues to surround the delivery of the Metro North project, which is widely viewed locally as crucial to the economic recovery of the North County area. At present, there are three infrastructural projects in the pipeline for the city, one of which is Metro North, with only one likely to be given the go-ahead. The two others are a DART underground system and a link connecting the two Luas lines.
By Patrick Finnegan However, a fourth option has come to light in the shape of a DART link to the airport, which is seen as an attempt to pacify supporters of Metro North. The County Leader set about getting the feelings of the local representatives in the area about the possibility that Metro North may not go ahead. The results showed ‘concern’ and ‘support’ from government representatives without the passion which was displayed prior to the General Election. The case for Metro North is particularly compelling when one considers that it is the only project that has planning permission secured and money already spent on it. The cost benefit analysis shows it to be a most cost effective project, returning €2 for every €1 spent on it. Tony Lambert, CEO Fingal Dublin Chamber was very forthright in his views when he told the County Leader, “Metro North is the only public transport proposal with a clear economic plan attached to it. What is needed now is courageous leadership to give the Dublin City region an interconnected public transport plan that will service the people of the area for the next 30 years and beyond. The Government must make the right decision for the right reasons. The Chamber calls on the Government to be daring and be bold in your decisions and history will prove you right,” he said. The minister with responsibility for the future of Metro
