Metro Is The Only Option A
North and TD for much of Swords, Leo Varadkar said, “The Government has not made a decision about any of the major rail projects proposed for Dublin, including Metro North. Major transport projects are being assessed on their potential to stimulate the economy, create jobs, and provide important transport links. But the most important criterion will be affordability. He continued, “Iarnród Éireann recently presented another alternative project to link Dublin city with the airport via a DART extension beyond Clongriffin. This is not a new proposal and has been raised before in a variety of forms. I have asked Iarnród Éireann to prepare a detailed business case for this project. No decisions will be taken before the review concludes in September,” he concluded. Socialist TD, Clare Daly took a totally different view and was particularly dismissive of the proposed new DART extension to the airport. “The idea of extending the DART line instead of building the Metro is a red herring. Such an extension would require major disruption to the DART service, but would not deliver the link between the city centre, Swords and the airport that Metro would.” She said that the decision is likely to be made soon after the government’s jobs initiative and this ‘shovel ready’ project is set to create the very jobs the government is trying to create. Its a shame on the government ministers representing the area if Metro North does not go ahead.” Daly called for cross community support and said, “There needs to be major pressure put on from all sections of the community, business and residential alike to deliver a proper public transport link to the North County. Government TDs, including Minister for Health, James Reilly claim to be supportive of Metro North. Reilly said, “the project is terribly important in terms of the Continued on page 10
worrying surge of uncertainty continues to surround the delivery of the Metro North project, which is widely viewed locally as crucial to the economic recovery of the North County area. At present, there are three infrastructural projects in the pipeline for the city, one of which is Metro North, with only one likely to be given the go-ahead. The two others are a DART underground system and a link connecting the two Luas lines.
By Patrick Finnegan However, a fourth option has come to light in the shape of a DART link to the airport, which is seen as an attempt to pacify supporters of Metro North. The County Leader set about getting the feelings of the local representatives in the area about the possibility that Metro North may not go ahead. The results showed ‘concern’ and ‘support’ from government representatives without the passion which was displayed prior to the General Election. The case for Metro North is particularly compelling when one considers that it is the only project that has planning permission secured and money already spent on it. The cost benefit analysis shows it to be a most cost effective project, returning €2 for every €1 spent on it. Tony Lambert, CEO Fingal Dublin Chamber was very forthright in his views when he told the County Leader, “Metro North is the only public transport proposal with a clear economic plan attached to it. What is needed now is courageous leadership to give the Dublin City region an interconnected public transport plan that will service the people of the area for the next 30 years and beyond. The Government must make the right decision for the right reasons. The Chamber calls on the Government to be daring and be bold in your decisions and history will prove you right,” he said. The minister with responsibility for the future of Metro

Local Communities Receive Grants From EirGrid Energy company Eirgrid has had a controversial year in the North County, as works continue to lay new pipelines to ensure a constant electricity supply to the area. Now those pipelines are almost ready, the company has made charitable donations to community groups spread across the area totalling €125,000.
By Bob McKenzie Speaking to the County Leader, Sean Meagher, Eirgrid Project manager said “ We are delighted to be able to financially benefit the community in this way. We ran a competition with the County Council for groups to apply for funding and this is part of our strategy of giving something back to the
safety equipment which will get plenty of use over the next few years.” Foroige Youth service also received a grant of €4,000 and that will be used to set up a youth café in Rush. Derval Cumiskey says “it is a long overdue windfall for the area’s youth. We have been waiting a long time to get this going and it is great news. We have the
Graduation Of New Counsellors A total of 13 new counsellors have successfully graduated from a three and half year long course at B.A.S.E, in Brackenstown, Swords. The 13 graduates of the Humanistic Counselling Diploma now bring the total number of graduate counsellors working for community based, Fingal Counselling Service to 31. The Counselling Service provides confidential counselling to couples and individuals in a safe environment, where clients are supported and helped while they are working through their difficulties. Fingal Counselling Service was set up by B.A.S.E back in 1996 in response to tragic losses to the local community involving suicide and bereavement. The need for this service is greater now than ever before. A core group of the most experienced counsellors have also completed a Diploma course in Suicideology in order to meet the vital need for specialised counselling for individuals and families affected by suicide. The Service works closely with Fingal Bereaved by Suicide Support Service. The Counselling Service can be contacted at B.A.S.E Resource Centre, Brackenstown, Swords on 8902596, Monday to Friday from 10am to 1pm. reinforced our understanding of how unpredictable and dangerous the sea can be. St Maur’s Pipe Band were out in force and provided very pleasant musical entertainment for the large gathering. Rush Sailing Club is thriving and caters for 60 juniors who meet every Tuesday and Thursday, with three or four classes each night. One of their members, Aine Carroll won the Instructor of the Year award by the Irish Sailing Association this year. This thriving club was established in 1954 and was built by members through volunteerism and is a wonderful example of community spirit in the area.
The annual Blessing of the Boats took place at Rush Sailing Club on Sunday 8th May last. The ceremony was conducted by local priest, Fr Kieran Coughlan PP, Rush on a particularly blustery day. Normally the priest would visit the boats to administer the blessings, but weather conditions dictated that the blessing took place nearer to the sanctuary of the clubhouse. It was a particularly poignant ceremony in light of the recent tragedy in Skerries and Father Coughlan remembered the lost fishermen, Ronan Browne and David Gilsenan. The blustery wind was a reminder that people use Pictured at the Blessing of the Boats at Rush Sailing Club on Sunday 8th May last the sea as a livelihood, as are L-R, Aine Carroll, Maurice McCrum, Ronan Duff, Pat Kennelly, Eoin Gormley, well as for pleasure and Fergus de Faoite and club secretary, Jacqui McCrum.
Plans Submitted For Kinsealy Baptist Church A new church could be coming closer to fruition after details of a planned complex were submitted to the Council. The trustees of Swords Baptist Church are seeking planning permission for a new 1,636 sqm, two level church development and car park on Feltrim Road. The Council were the former owners of the 0.78 hectare site before it was sold to the church. The site is located beside Scoil an Duinninigh, where a new two storey building is under construction at present. The design
By Leslie Murphy of the church provides for a large central auditorium in the form of an octagon, which includes 366 seating spaces. Upstairs will have meeting rooms, a youth room, kitchen areas, counselling rooms, administration offices and toilets. There are 10 parking spaces planned at the site and a further 129 to be provided by the council. The site is zoned ‘green belt’, although places of worship are permissible once they are near local
towns or villages. The Council requested additional information in January, seeking clarification over a number of areas, which have since been lodged. The Council has received information regarding sewer connections, flooding concerns, storm water management systems, surface drainage scheme and also details of a planned rainwater harvesting system. A crèche and play school may also be housed in the building and particulars of this are also sought, along with a revised site layout plan regarding a query over parking layout and paving in the area.

Butler Slams Council Over Ridgewood Pitches Delay
T
he County Council has requested additional information with regard to the proposed dressing room facility at Ridgewood. This, according to local councillor, Darragh Butler (FF), “is holding up our attempts to get St. Finian’s GAA Club, River Valley in there, playing on the new full size and junior pitches as soon as possible.”
Butler continued, “This is very frustrating as the original application was lodged back in February and now it could be the middle of June before they finally get the go ahead to start building the dressing rooms. Cllr Anne Devitt and I have requested the council to reconsider their decision and take the pitches in charge, even though the dressing rooms are not built yet, thus enabling St Finian’s to use the big pitch at least. I will continue to press for this,” he said. As the local authority has unfortunately linked the completion of the dressing rooms to the taking in charge of the new pitches, this is not helping to push this project along. He continued, “In my opinion they should take the pitches in charge now and do everything they can to speed up the planning permission

3 to allow St. Finian’s make use of the pitches before they are taken into the charge of the council, but unfortunately this is not an option that can be considered for security and insurance reasons.” Public liability insurance would also be an issue. MKN have confirmed that if the local authority wants to take the pitches in charge prior to the dressing rooms being built, then this can be easily facilitated and once the permission comes through for the dressing rooms and the necessary services are in place, that they would then build the dressing rooms under licence from the

curity of access to the water that they need, which has to be addressed.” She continued, “Emergency action has to be taken. If these problems are to be solved on a long term basis, the government must provide funding. Instead of wasting millions on a programme to install water meters in households, resources have to be provided for the repair of the archaic network in our areas that desperately need it. The idea that people cannot rely on an uninterrupted water supply is an absolute scandal, which must end,” she concluded.

Gerry Keogh, Chief Fire Officer said, “We are confident in the knowledge that we can now provide an Emergency ambulance and Paramedic service second to none, of which we are very proud.” The Dublin Airport Fire Service, from as far back as the 1940’s, has provided an ambulance service, which over the years has provided essential care for those who required it within the Airport campus. This included passengers, crew, airport employees and ancillary services that required assistance whether it is
medical or traumatic. In recent years the need for a highly trained professional medical response has become a necessity at the Airport. In the early days, training for ambulance crews was limited to first aid training, advanced ambulance and later emergency first response training. As an ambulance service the Dublin Airport Fire Service are now governed by the Pre Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC). This organisation oversees the training and educational standards of all pre hospital emergency care professionals. To this end, management at Dublin Airport Fire Service embarked on an

development of Dublin North and indeed the city, with its potential for jobs in construction and the possibility of over 30,000 jobs. The business case is irrefutable – for every euro spent, two euros will be made. I have been expressing those views and will continue to do so at Cabinet as well.” Labour’s Brendan Ryan said, “I have taken every opportunity to press the case for Metro North and I

urge all those interested in delivering Metro North to continue making representations to the Minister on this matter”. Fianna Fail senator, Darragh O’Brien was equally outspoken in favour of the project. “The cost of infrastructure and construction has come down significantly. This is the time to build and invest in critical infrastructure that will deliver a real economic and employment return. The irony is the government is
launching a jobs initiative this week and at the same time is refusing to proceed with this job creation project. This will not be lost on the businesses who have located in North Dublin in anticipation of this investment and some businesses which have already been levied to take account of their location along the proposed Metro line. Minister Varadkar has refused to sign-off on the enabling works which would immediately create 260 jobs. Indeed the County Council has invested heavily in the Metro project and is fully committed to it. The deputy leader of Fine Gael, Dr. James Reilly, is a senior member of the Cabinet. I am calling on Minister Reilly to ensure there is no further delay to Metro North, or as most people now fear, that it is not scrapped,” concluded O’Brien. With such a ground swell of positivity surrounding the benefits of Metro North and an excellent cost benefit analysis outcome, it will be difficult to face the electorate, should Metro North fall by the wayside.

Skerries RNLI Are All Systems Go Skerries RNLI Lifeboat crew are getting ready for the season ahead. Though the Volunteer crew have not been called out very often over the winter, they have been busy. A number of new volunteer crew have been welcomed into the station, including locals David Shankey, Emma Wilson, Laura Boylan, Ruairi Grimes and Stephen Crowley. Wesley Hanratty has come onboard as shore helper and those crew who retired in 2011, including helm, David Courtney will, it is hoped, keep up their involvement with the station, though they won't be going to sea on any call outs. Training has been at the forefront in the winter months and volunteer Lifeboat Training co-ordinators, Liam McMahon and Ronnie Horan, have been putting the new crew through their paces, with training at the station and out on the water, regardless of the weather. Crewman, Joe May was recently signed off as helm with other crewmen lined up for Helm training in the coming months.
Older, more experienced members of the RNLI work alongside the new trainee crew and in this way experience can be passed on to those who will be entrusted with the responsibility of saving lives at sea around our coastline in the years to come. As ever, the RNLI committee and Volunteer RNLI crew at Skerries will always be grateful to all those who fundraise on their behalf. Without this tremendous support, the crew would not be able to support the Lifeboat Station at Skerries. The Frosties, those hardy Skerries swimmers, who swim daily at Skerries, recently raised funds for the station. Local man, Leonard McLoughlin, gave a talk in Blue Bar, Skerries on 'Growing up in Skerries'. The Annual 2K swim at Rogerstown Estuary, Rush, took place recently and proved to be a great success. The people at Rush Sailing Club provided hot showers, soup and sandwiches for those participating in the event.

A Zumba class on a large scale will be held in Skerries Community Centre’s Main Hall on Thursday May 19th to raise funds for Special Olympics Ireland. Zumba is the biggest craze in fitness in recent years and Ireland has now embraced the phenomenon with open arms. With an infusion of Latin rhythms and dance moves this easy to follow calorie burning and exciting way to exercise is perfect for those who love the dance floor, but not a dance class. Kevin Woods, local instructor who has been teaching Zumba since January has joined up with two sisters Antonia and Victoria Armitage who are coaches for Special Olympics Clubs in North County Dublin
and who are actively fundraising for this great cause. Participants should arrive no later than 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start and the class will run for an hour. This event is for everyone to attend from 11 years and upwards and is perfect for those who already love Zumba and those who have yet to try it. So whether you come alone or decide to come with friends or family, it will be a fun event for everyone to be involved in and all proceeds will go directly to Special Olympics Ireland. The cost of the event is €10 to be paid upon arrival. If you are attending, text 0877415252 to register so an idea of numbers can be achieved prior to the event.

The Lambay Singers are a well-established secular choir, based in Donabate and Portrane, but the group boasts members from all parts of north County Dublin, with members from as far afield as Portmarnock and Ballyboughal. Under the baton of new musical director, George Rice, the choir are endeavouring to build on many successful performances in the past.
The choir typically stage two performances each year, one at Christmas time and one in early summer, while also being involved in charity fund-raisers and community events. The group numbers about 24 singers, but are always on the lookout for new members to swell their ranks. They meet for rehearsal on Thursday nights in the Waterside Hotel in Donabate, and while they work hard at rehearsal in search of the perfect harmony, there is always time for a relaxing drink in the bar afterwards.

ove’s young dream, or so the saying goes. But as time and life move on with the glamour and exciting lifestyles of today, it doesn’t matter what age you are getting married.
Many people are deciding to take the plunge and take the brave step to wedlock. Getting
married is more fashionable than ever and there are so many celebrities and well known
people. But the wedding that we will all be talking about for a long time to come is that

of royal couple Prince William and his princess Kate. Kate made it look so easy in front of millions and managed to get the look just right. Choosing the right things for your big day will be easy if you know what it is you’re looking for and how much you can afford. But like all memorable times in your life you must
remember to plan well and avoid disappointment.
Plan Your Dream Day Start at the beginning and that means putting all your cards on the table and deciding what is reasonable
and what is out of the question. If you’re going to have a traditional wedding in a church, you would need to see if the date you want if available. This is crucial and you need to be really doing this first.

Summer Dreams The Summer is a great time for a wedding and if
you’re planning on a Summer wedding, now is the time to get along to some of the beautiful hotels and wedding venues
in the area. There are many different shaped rooms available and there are also lots of special offers available too.

Another thing that should be high on the priority list is the venue. These things are so important and if they are left on the long finger you could end up being sorry in the end. The big day is something that some people plan for a few years, however others that may be in different situations and decide to get married within a few months. Whatever way you decide to go, make sure you keep your plan of action at hand. Here’s a tip, place a poster of your to-do list in your kitchen. You spend time there
every day and when you’re waiting on the kettle to boil, or your toast to pop you could be making a few
phone calls. The kitchen is also a place you can summon your family and decide who is doing what.
When handing out jobs for the wedding you have to have everything covered and consider other
people’s feelings. Does your other half have a bigger family than you and maybe they will have more on the altar. If a situation like this arises and you don’t want a big wedding party, make this decision early. These days, some people only go for one bridesmaid and one groomsman. This way you can still have the traditional wedding style without the big fuss. On the other hand, if you want to have a lot of family and friends taking part in the ceremony make that decision too.

A Real Role house& home Model
ooking lean, lithe and remarkably fresh the day after Dublin's great victory over Meath the previous Saturday, star Dublin GAA forward and St. Sylvester's, Malahide player, Sinéad Aherne laughed and conceded that the team had 'let their hair down the previous night!' Having been relegated last year to Division Two of the National Football League, it eased the Dub's pain to know that by qualifying for the League Final they were back in Division One and emerging victorious over arch rivals Meath by scoring 3-15 to their 2-9, made it all the sweeter. She managed to clock up a vital nine points by the time the final whistle blew. The teams now have to face each other again in the Leinster semi-final on 3rd July and Sinéad is looking forward to that battle and hopefully another victory. The woman who lines out in the number 14 shirt for her county was first called to the Dublin panel while still a fifth year student in Scoil Iosa, Malahide. At that time she also played hockey and basketball but 'didn't really have time to keep up the other sports, so GAA won out.' She had been introduced to Gaelic football by her older brother, Eoin and joined St. Sylvester's back in the mid '90's to play in the ever popular mini-leagues. When Mick Stewart set up the first under 12 girls team in 1995 when Sinéad was 10, there was no holding her back. In her 25 years she has togged out for Scoil Iosa, DIT and of course St. Sylvester's, but undoubtedly one of Sinéad's proudest days on the pitch was 26th September 2010 when Dublin secured their first All Ireland victory over a strong Tyrone team. Sinéad was particularly pleased for members of the team who had battled to win the coveted cup for many years. "It was really great for people who had played on the team and stuck it out for 10 years without having won an All Ireland to eventually be rewarded." Sinéad describes her teammates as "a great bunch of girls, some of my best friends for life are on the team and when you're struggling a bit, there's always someone there to pick you up and keep you going." During the match Sinéad was described as being 'on fire' by Micheal O'Muircheartaigh in his vivid radio commentary. Her name was constantly on his lips as she scored a staggering 2-7, with 2-4 of that coming from play. Along with Dubs captain and Naomh Mearnog player, Denise Masterson, Sinéad inspired and ignited a sense of determination among her team mates, ensuring the victory which had been denied them in the 2009 final by an experienced Cork team. Sinéad describes losing by a single point in the dying moments of that game as 'heartbreak.'
Summer time is a time to feel the vibrance of the lovely surroundings we live in. The parks, beaches and amenities are right on our doorstep to be
embraced. It’s also a great time to get your house in order and make changes. If you are having a problem with space, you can do many things to improve
this. There are lots of tricks to getting the look of minimalism into your home without having to carry out major refurbishments. The simplest step is to
get some storage boxes in order to put some of your belongings into place. The only way you can get rid of things you’re unsure of is to store them and decide after a few weeks if you really want them. The storage system can work wonders in all of the rooms in your home.
Caroline
Heffernan
She describes the week after the All Ireland victory as 'a blur.' 'It was such a great feeling you'd have a smile on your face all the time.' She describes the Brendan Martin Cup as being 'the most travelled cup in Ireland.' He was brought to clubs all over the place and it got to the stage where you'd be asking 'where's Brendan today?' In late October, Sinéad and fellow Syl's and Dubs player, Niamh McEvoy paraded 'Brendan' through Malahide Village followed by a stream of fans, both young and old to a
Malahide resident and All-Ireland medallist, Sinead Aherne.
night of great celebrations in St. Sylvester's Club. Following Dublin's victory, Sinéad deservedly won many plaudits including the Ladies County Board 'Senior Player of the Year' and also Paudí O'Shea's 'Player of the Year'. Paudí was 'mesmerised watching the skill she displayed in the All-Ireland final against Tyrone.' While obviously delighted to be awarded her second All Star award in 2010, Sinéad was particularly pleased that nine of the team who'd worked so hard were nominated. Her first All Star awarded for the 2009 season was bitter sweet and 'while it was a nice recognition, I definitely would have swapped it for the All Ireland!' Winning an All Star gave Sinéad the opportunity to travel to San Francisco last year. While managing to fit in a visit to Alcatraz, the All Stars also visited a newly established GAA Club, The Fog Harps, who play on Treasure Island. Sinéad has always taken her training regime in her stride and
despite her tough schedule has successfully completed a Business degree and Masters in Accounting at DIT, and is currently on a three year accountancy contract. During the season she trains Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays with Dublin, with additional Syl's training on Mondays. "The inter-county manager meets the clubs at the start of the season and sets out the schedule. There's give and take between club and county which works in everyone's favour. With the Club Championships currently underway, we're not doing any county training now." Highly respected former Dublin player and DCU coach, Angie McNally has also come on board and Sinéad believes 'it's good to have a fresh voice coming in during the season and highlighting things we might have missed." Commenting on levels of support at games Sinéad says, "It's great to get a good crowd at matches but the women's game doesn't attract the level of support the men's game does." At the same time Sinéad appreciates the anonymity the women's game provides. "The men are under a lot of pressure, the defeats must be harder to take when everyone knows their faces." Sinéad avidly follows the men's game and describes the recent victory of the hurlers over the much fancied Kilkenny, 'as really great!' Her family are among her most ardent supporters and her parents Redmond and Angela travel to all the matches. "They're brilliant! They go to the matches, even when I'm not playing. My sister Fiona often says we wouldn't know what to talk about at the dinner table if we weren't analysing a match," Sinéad laughs. With Dublin facing the Royal County once again in July, we know that Sinéad and all the Dubs, including Naomh Mearnog's ace goalkeeper Cliodhna O'Connor will play their hearts out with determination and commitment and hopefully leave Croke Park in late September with 'Brendan' in their hands. Certainly all the team and Sinéad in particular continue to make their clubs, their towns and their county proud.

house& home The Bedroom Your bedroom is a place for you to relax and unwind, not a place to store all the washing, post, papers etc. Sometimes we bring work into our bedroom in order to work in bed, this doesn’t work out all
the time. The solution to this is to keep some storage boxes in your bedroom and keep your paperwork, extra clothes and all other things that you are undecided about in. Keep these storage boxes under your bed if you have room, otherwise designate a place for
them on top of your wardrobe. Some storage boxes come in the form of a chest of drawers and can look quite clean and pretty with a lamp on top, or just tucked away in the corner. Go back to them after a few weeks and sort out what you want and what’s
just no good. Once you have sorted out the overflow in your room, you can add a little spice. Freshen up your bedroom by changing the curtains to bright fresh colours and possibly a matching bed set. A few scattered cushions on the bed can also work
wonders and some scented candles on the bedside lockers, just to add that fresh feel good factor to your room. Remember your bedroom is the place were you dream and it should be your haven.
Bathroom Fresh The problem with having a lot of toiletries and cosmetics is storage. A lot of bathrooms will have lovely tiles and be small, so you
need to make the most of your space. Storage boxes, are the answer you might be looking for, they can give you the extra room without having to buy expensive storage units, unless you can afford the money and room, so in that case go for it. Getting back to the storage boxes they are a great way
to keep your toiletries and cosmetics clean and tidied once you have used them and are ready to store them. Storage boxes are also a great way to store cleaning products for the bathroom and you don’t have to have cloths and detergents lying around making things look untidy.
