Blow For Swords As Iconic Plant Closes The news that the well known Lonza factory in Swords is to close in June of this year, with the loss of 43 jobs, has been greeted with shock by the local community. This landmark plant on Watery Lane, was better known as Arch Chemicals, and previously as Olin Chemicals. Lonza, which took over from Arch Chemicals in 2011 is based in Basel, Switzerland, has informed 32 direct and 11 contracted staff at its Swords site that the facility will close in June of this year. The factory has been in Swords in one shape or another, since 1966, and manufactures biocides for anti-dandruff and marine paint anti-fouling applications. Michael O’Donoghue, Plant Manager at Lonza spoke to the County Leader and explained how this unfortunate loss of jobs came about. “For this range of products, Lonza operates three sites of which, Swords is
By Patrick Finnegan the smallest. The other two are in Rochester, New York and Suzhou, China. Global demand can be met effectively in the years to come with just the two larger well established sites, and so the Swords plant will close. It’s down to production efficiencies.” He explained that most of the company’s customer base is in Asia, which can be serviced from the Chinese factory. The 32 jobs in question are skilled operator jobs, including technicians and the 11 contracted staff are made up of electricians, security personnel, maintenance crews and various support services.
He continued, “The site is owned by Lonza and our objective is to completely close Lonza production at this site. We will stop production in June and all activity will cease by September. It is purely a process of rationalisation by the company,” he said. For the past 47 years, this factory has been a regular and reliable employer, which has a record of employing local skilled and non-skilled workers and has played a major role in the local economy. In the 1990s, employment at the factory peaked at around 70 employees. This adds to the tragedy and the end of a landmark employer in Swords. Commenting on the news, Tony Lambert, CEO, Fingal Dublin Chamber told the County Leader, “It is with
Welcome For New Community Facilities In Lusk Councillor Tom O’Leary (FG) welcomed confirmation of funding by the County Council for a new community sports hall facility at Lusk National School. “This facility will be available for use jointly by the school and the local community and is a very welcome development of planned leisure facilities in Lusk.” O’Leary told the County Leader. “This, combined with the new secondary school, soccer club, playing pitches and the planned extension of the national school means the Government and County Council are definitely investing significant resources in Lusk, which is Cllr. O’Leary fantastic for the area and its residents,” he continued. “Lusk has a young population profile who will most definitely make use of the new community and education facilities.” The model for this centre is the same as the new community centre now opened at the Educate Together School in Flemington Balbriggan. This project is based on the Fingal Schools model which won a national award as a method of funding and planning for local facilities. The community centre and national school extension are planned for completion by September 2014. The refurbishment of Devine’s Cottage at the Square in Lusk was also confirmed at the monthly meeting of the County Council on Monday, 11th March last. This facility will provide meeting rooms at a very accessible town centre location for 50 people with extra car parking available for residents visiting the village and the centre. “The Council are taking a very pro-active interest in Lusk, which is most welcomed,” concluded O’Leary.

great sadness that the Chamber learned that Lonza, have decided to close their premises. The company has been in Swords since 1966, and has given employment to many generations of local people. Their decision to close is obviously based on global markets and is no reflection on the area or quality of staff.” He continued, “Indeed, the operation of the plant has been to the highest standard of health and safety. The company has always been supportive of local groups and organisations, and has been a member of the Chamber since 1994,” he concluded. Whilst the recession has had very severe consequences in many parts of the country, Swords, up to now, has largely been spared much of the large, wholesale closure of companies. However, this news will have a huge impact on the families of those affected by the closure, and also on local companies that supply Lonza on a daily basis, with food, drink, materials and other services.

Skerries Group Needs Host Families Would you like to make new friends or establish a contact with a French family? Skerries Town Twinning Association is looking for host families for a group of visitors from their twin area, Guichen, in May. The visitors will be coming to help the group officially launch Guichen Way. If you would like to host someone, there will be a number of events organised for the group. Don’t let your lack of French stop you getting involved - it’s often half the fun! If you have candidates for French examinations coming up, why not have a native speaker in your home for a day or two, who can help with the real language? And, of course, you may, as many people have done, make new friends who will be equally happy to welcome you to their home in France. If you would to get involved contact: mcquildg@gmail.com.

Swords Mothers Get Into The Swing Of Things A group of concerned mothers in the Swords Manor and Applewood areas of Swords have decided to take matters into their own hands, in their efforts to have two playgrounds built. This came about as a result of the County Council refusing to build the playgrounds, due to lack of funding. The determined mothers decided to

give the local authority a dig out, and are embarking on a fundraising mission to procure funding to enable the playgrounds to be built. Spokesperson for the group, Marica Killi, who lives in Lioscian told the County Leader about how this grouping came about. “About a year ago, a group of mothers got together and discussed the fact that there were no playgrounds for children in the area. There are six schools in the area, but no playgrounds. they tried to build playgrounds when funding was available, but as they were to be built in front of people’s homes, nobody wanted them. Now there’s no funding. We started a petition and got 800 signatures in just a few weeks, she said. “Local councillor, Anne Devitt (NP) has asked the Council to consider providing funds for the playgrounds and they are considering it, but nothing’s certain about it.” She continued, “We need two playgrounds, one at Broadmeadow Linear Park in Thornleigh and the other on waste ground, opposite Swords Manor Shopping Centre. However, the local authority said they have no funds available for such projects. We need sites that are easily accessible and are near public roads, not hidden away. Thornleigh has an all-weather pitch, which caters for the older kids and we need need the same in Swords Manor as well,” said Marica. The total amount needed is €300,000 for both playgrounds and the all weather pitch, but the committee are already eyeing up fundraising options and they hope to get help from the National Lottery among others. With such determination, it’s hard to see them not succeeding.

Nevertheless, it was Mother’s Day, and over 50 swimmers participated in the 2km swim to raise much needed funds for the charity. Time in total in the water ranged between 20 and 30 minutes and the waters were patrolled by three safety boats in case anyone got into difficulty. The subject of the much debated Holywell area in Swords has once again been brought to the local authority. Local councillor, Darragh Butler (FF), asked the County Manager to investigate the requirement for traffic calming and additional road safety measures at Holywell Dale, as he says this is something that must be dealt with. The County Council responded by saying that they were currently investigating the requirement for traffic calming and additional road safety measures at the area. This is not the first time that the
Holywell area has been brought up to the Council. The Holywell - Drinan Distributor Road in Swords caused several years of traffic torment for local residents before action was taken. Speaking to the County Leader, Cllr Butler welcomed the decision, saying: “This is a very important issue for locals. Residents were waiting too long for a decision and action on the Drinan Distributor Road, and that took far too long to get resolved. With the new school now in place nearby, it is vitally important that traffic calming and additional road safety measures be put in place.” The Council have said that work will begin on Holywell Dale once the proposals are finished being examined.

North County Living by Jennifer McShane
Dedicated To The Arts It would be fairly safe to say that Naomi Moore mingles with the stars for a living. The local lady, who is from Portmarnock and now living in Naul, is the proud CEO (along with her two other partners, Aidan Alcock and Tony Perry) of Pulse College and the famous Windmill Lane Recording Studios located in the city centre. She eats, breaths and sleeps her work, which she says is not a job, but simply a way of life. She at down with the County Leader to tell us a little more about her life, her work and why she loves being a part of a close knit community. Naomi and her husband Shane, have been living in Naul for the past 10 years and Naomi says that she really loves it as she and her family feel very much a part of the community: “I love it there. It’s such a beautiful area and there is a great sense of community among the locals. Everyone looks out for one another and there’s always a familiar face to see around the place and you’re never stuck for someone to go for a pint with!” She comes from a large family and is the youngest of six siblings. “One of the reasons we opted for a bigger place in Naul is so we could have more people over.” This might well come in handy as she has a staggering 15 nieces and nephews! She says she has a perfect balance between her quieter life in Naul and her busy, hectic day job running Pulse College and Windmill Lane Recording Studios. “I definitely have a great balance between the two. It’s nice to know that I can come home and unwind.” A true veteran of the industry, she has almost two decades experience in the creative arts and it’s clear when we first meet, that she is extremely passionate and dedicated to her art form. “For me, my job is a natural part of my life,” she says. “The day job and anything after hours go hand in hand together, which I love.” She says that she fell into the industry quite naturally. “I started an internship at Windmill many years ago and everything just went from there. I’m still around now, so I must be doing something right!” Incidentally, she also met her husband Shane here. “I took his job really! Ah no, he was leaving and I was going in, so we were obviously meant to meet somewhere along the way.” Shane is equally creative and is a musician and producer and manager of
the Seamus Ennis Centre in Naul. She admits that she wasn’t really aware that she was business minded and initially thought of a career in journalism when she was in college. “I always went towards anything creative. I enjoyed journalism a lot, but in the end I didn’t think I was pushy enough to make it in that particular industry,” she said, laughing. There are differences between Pulse College (this is geared towards students and they offer a range of practical courses in film, TV and more), and the renowned Windmill Lane Studios (this is used on a commercial bases and has seen the likes of Lady Gaga, The Script, U2 and Bryan Adams walk through its doors). Naomi says after so long there, you do get used to seeing the famous faces around, but admits she was star stuck when she met Marty Pellow from Wet, Wet Wet. “I just couldn’t believe it was him. I used to have posters of him on my wall when I was younger so it was a big moment for me.” “Everyday can be a highlight, but there are one or two moments that stand out for me. One of the best moments was when Bryan Adams made me a vegetarian burger. That was pretty surreal,” she continued. She says one of the highlights for her is working with the students that come through Pulse College. “We’re all like a big family and have some brilliant, dedicated students that are really amazing. Even after they’ve come and gone we like to stay in touch with them. It’s fantastic when we get an email to say how well someone has done.” The graduates list from the college is very impressive, and even boasts past Oscar winners. In terms of the future, Naomi says they are hoping to expand the college and as the creative media sector is always diversifying and expanding, they want to help Irish people in particular acquire the necessary skills to make it in upand-coming sectors, such as video gaming. “There is a 91 per cent rate of employment in that sector and we’d love to see more of our own in the industry.” Naomi is looking forward to taking a break (at least for a week) as herself, Shane and six of her childhood friends are setting off on a Mediterranean cruise. “I’m extremely lucky in that I love what I do and that it is my way of life now. It doesn’t get much better than that,” she concluded.
“The brilliant thing is that every day can be a highlight.”

Portmarnock Photographer Helps Easter Campaign Alan Hughes from TV3 recently joined up with Portmarnock photographer David McNeill and baby Ruby to help launch IPPA Happy Faces in aid of the Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation. This nationwide Easter fundraising campaign offers professional portraits for just €25 with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to Jack & Jill. David is one of a number of photographers giving their time to raise much needed funding for the foundation. This year the overall target is to get 3,200 people to participate thus raising €80,000 to fund 5,000 home nursing care hours for families nationwide with children with severe developmental delay as a result of brain damage. David will be running his event between 30th March and 1st April at his studio in Portmarnock. He told the County Leader: “I always do a certain amount of charity work, but really wanted to be involved in this national campaign. Its a great cause and one worth local support. I want people to come forward and book a mini portrait session. The donation is only €25. Where else will you get an opportunity to have a professional portrait taken for so little and know that by doing this you are making a real difference to children’s lives.” Pictured here are TV3‚ Alan Hughes, Portmarnock photographer David McNeill and baby Ruby as they launched the IPPA Happy Faces campaign in aid of the Jack & Jill Children's Foundation.

Kind hearted students from St. Finian’s Community College in Swords held a fundraiser for Trócaire recently and raised a hugely impressive €2,300 for the charity. The fundraiser was held over three days, from 6th March to the 8th March and consisted of a 24 hour fast, collecting money in the Pavilions Swords and a non-uniform day. On 6th March, the students collected money on Trócaire’s behalf from generous shoppers in the Pavilions Shopping Centre. Then on Thursday morning, a group of students began a sponsored 24 hour fast. Finally, on Friday, a non-uniform day was held in the school, where students wore blue to show their support for Trócaire’s charitable work. Sixth year student. Daryl McCann said of the fast, “it was pretty difficult, I drank juices and coffee to keep going”. Third year student, Andrew Bell said, “fasting gives us a feel for what people in the underdeveloped world deal with everyday”, while Sarah Callan, 5th year student said, “it was all worth it, a good cause.” Vice-principal, Mr. Adrian Flynn congratulated the selfless students for fasting for such a worthwhile cause. The students were rewarded with a hearty breakfast upon completing the fast at 10.00am on Friday. A cheque was presented to Trócaire representative, Eimear Kellett during the celebratory breakfast. The money raised will go towards supporting communities to learn about their rights and gain government support to build roads and schools, and to ensure families have clean drinking water.

St. Finian’s GAA STAIR CUMANN NAOMH FHIONNAIN move outdoors. In January 2011, a brand new state of the art clubhouse was opened beside the Community Centre. It boasts four dressing rooms - two for men and two for ladies. It also has a meeting room and an activity room, which is a major source of income for the club. It is rented out for Irish dancing, boxercise, aerobic and yoga classes. Grace said that, “on Saturday mornings, we have a coffee shop where members can come together and have a chat from 10.30am to 1pm. We also run a very successful lotto, which brings in much needed funs,” says Grace. The club has two pitches in River Valley - one adult and one juvenile, as well as an
adult pitch at Nevinstown, close to the Coachman’s Inn, which caters for any overflow of matches and training. They recently acquired an adult and two juvenile pitches at a wonderful new facility at Ridgewood. The marvellous dressings rooms and facilities here are shared with their neighbours, River Valley Rangers. Last year was a particularly successful one for St Finian’s, when the adult footballers attained senior status, by winning the AFL Division 3 title. They will now compete at the highest level in Dublin GAA circles and they look forward to welcoming some household names to the club in the upcoming season. The senior team are a

Indeed Warren and the hard working committee were at the forefront in planning a Mock Wedding last month, in what was a very successful fundraiser for the club. tree at the entrance to the newly restored St Werburgh’s Well in Crowscastle, Swords.
Sometime after 2005 the well was demolished, but in 2012 a group of dedicated local people rescued it from under rubble and concrete and, with some very hard work were able to restore the well making it a beautiful place to visit once more. Carmel Diviney, Manager at Smart Angels is part of a team of people who have taken it on themselves to maintain it and encourages people to visit. She told the County Leader: “The more visitors the well receives, the more it will help to ensure its protection. I would encourage you to go, say a prayer, leave an offering or just sit and relax in this quiet space and enjoy it.” The nearby estate of Holywell takes it’s name from St Werburgh’s. It is located within a copse of trees in the green field site opposite the offices on Lakeshore Drive, at the rear of Airside Retail Park. According to Gary Branigan, author of the recently acclaimed “Ancient and Holy Wells of Dublin,” the well is associated with the cure for disorders of the eyes. The group will be holding a short tree planting ceremony on 23rd April at 1 o’clock when the children will again meet at the well to plant another tree for the “One Million Trees in One Day” initiative.

Busy Time For Malahide Musical Society It has been a hectic time recently for Malahide Musical and Dramatic Society, with their presentations of ‘Crazy For You’ and ‘Malahide’s Got Talent’. Both events turned out to be resounding successes. The Grand Final of Malahide’s Got Talent was held recently. First prize went to Sarah O’Connor for her rendition of Nina Simone’s ‘Feeling Good’. Sarah won the top
prize, which was a day in SALT recording studio where she will have the opportunity to record a few tracks on CD. Sarah will also be chauffeur driven to and from the studios in Sutton. Second prize went to singer, Daniel Murphy who was accompanied on guitar by Niall Cooke. The pair won €200, with third prize of €100 going to Robert Meehan who sang ‘Grenade’ by Bruno Mars. A great night was had by all. The event was really well supported by the local community. The level of talent on stage was fantastic for children of such a young age.
Traditional Weekend In Skerries The countdown is underway to the annual Skerries Traditional Weekend, which will once again feature a fantastic celebration of all things Irish. Now in its 12th year, this year’s event runs from May 18th to 20th and over the course of the three days there will be lots of music, song and dance reflecting the unique culture of the North County. Leading artists travel to Skerries where they join with locals and visitors in a celebration of Irish heritage in what is always a fantastic event. Last week the annual table quiz, an important fundraiser for the organisers, was held in Keane’s Bus Bar and as usual it was very well supported. This year the weekend kicks off with the Schools Outreach Programme on the Friday morning when local musicians visit primary schools in the area providing an interactive workshop and demonstration of various traditional Irish instruments. The finishing touches are currently being put to this year’s schedule and will be announced in the coming weeks.

Permanent Home Sought For Swords Boxing Club Swords councillor, Darragh Butler (FF), has been seeking a permanent home for Swords Boxing Club for some time now. He recently asked the local authority for an update regarding this

issue at a recent area meeting, as he says this is an issue that must be resolved. The local authority responded by saying that it is currently trying to look for a solution: “The Community, Culture and Sports Division continues to explore how it might be possible to accommodate boxing training in one of the shared facilities. Contact has been made with an engineering firm to see if it would be possible to engineer a solution to erecting a temporary boxing ring in a suitable space.” They conclude by saying that “It continues to be the Division’s objective to accommodate as wide a range of sports as possible in the facilities that are available.” However Cllr Butler says that the boxing club really needs to be a priority, as the very active and growing group have put up with temporary facilities for far too long. He told the County Leader: “The club has been in accommodation that is totally unsuitable for the past seven to eight years, and it just can’t continue. “The club is one of the most active and growing groups in the North County and the members are far too cramped as it is. A permanent home must be found for them,” he concluded.
North County Recycles Over Eight Thousand Batteries The joint ERP and Early Childhood Ireland battery recycling campaign has collected 8,680 batteries in The North County so far and is calling on all parents and preschoolers in to hurry and get recycling before the May 31st deadline. Speaking about the campaign, Yvonne Holmes, Head of Corporate Communications, ERP told the County Leader: “We are delighted with the
response we have had to date to the battery recycling initiative in the North County and are calling on parents and pre-schoolers to get recycling. When batteries are thrown in the bin they can have a harmful effect on the environment and cause soil and water pollution, meaning potential resources that could have been recycled is lost.” The competition closes on the 31st May and each partici-
pating facility will be in with a chance to win an ERP Recycling Party with face painters, balloon modellers and more, to take place in June. They will also win a trophy and a book voucher to the value of €250. This competition is part of an ongoing commitment from ERP and Early Childhood Ireland to put recycling and sustainability at the heart of the pre-school educational agenda and reduce the 90 percent of pre-school sites that have never before recycled.

Concerts To Give Business Boost To Malahide The picturesque town of Malahide is set to rock three times once again this year. The town, which has previously hosted concerts by Prince and Radiohead among others, is set to stage three concerts in the Bridgefield area of Malahide Castle in May. And the concerts, which will each have a capacity for 3,500 people, will provide a major boost to the town as local businesses will be
offered first refusal on the concession stands in the ground. Local councillor, Eoghan O’Brien (FF), said there would be an “important local business dividend” in the area with 3,500 people able to attend the concerts, which will be held on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday. “It has been confirmed to me that local businesses in Malahide will be able to host concession
stands in the grounds of the castle,” he said. He commended the work of Malahide Chamber of Commerce for the work it has been doing on bringing this to fruition. “I think local businesses will get a major boost from this announcement. It also complements the positive economic impact that will be generated from the Ireland-England cricket game in September. Over 5,000 tickets have already been sold for the 12,000 capacity
grounds in Malahide and I’m confident there will be huge interest in the game given the recent success of the Irish cricket team.” He added: ‘There has been a huge effort on the part of Malahide Castle, the Chamber of Commerce, The County Council, local business owners and the public to support the local economy and retain employment. There has been a lot of co-operation and we’re really seeing the benefits of that in these type of announcements.”
