53rd Annual Outing For Senior Citizens Balbriggan Senior Citizens Group organised their annual outing with a one day trip to Athlone on Sunday 10th July last. The outing was open to any senior citizen in Balbriggan aged over 66 years and the cost was a very reasonable €15 per person. The very first outing of the Senior Citizens in Balbriggan took place more than a half a century ago, in 1958 and

By Roxanna Neag since then, it has become a long awaited and regular event at the beginning of each July. Every year, the organisers choose a different destination. This year, more than 80 senior citizens came to Athlone, the vibrant town located in the centre of Ireland on the banks of the

They were all enthusiastic and happy to have another opportunity to spend a whole day together. “We look forward to this day out all year long. It is a great opportunity to meet and have a fun outing all together. We have travelled, admired the landscapes, taken dinner in a hotel in Athlone and then enjoyed a dancing evening before we came home,” said Cora Kelly, one of the organisers. “It’s lovely to spend the day together.” The Senior Citizens group was founded in 1958 and at Continued on page 18

Leader, “It is wonderful to see Patricia honoured in this way and the award reflects her dedication and commitment. There are many more like Patricia, who generously give their time to work in all the Vincent’s shops and there is room for many more volunteers. The award is particularly appropriate as 2011 has been designated the European Year of volunteering,” he said. Patricia has six grown up children and is a grandmother eight times over and loves being involved with the charity shop. Speaking to the County Leader, she said, “I really love my work and meeting different people all the time. I have some great friends, which I have made since I started work there.” She is no stranger to volunteering and worked for the Swords Citizens Information centre for three years. The Swords shop is situated in the Castle Shopping Centre and is currently undergoing an expansion. The adjacent unit has been acquired and both units are going to be refurbished into one large shop. “Because of this expansion, volunteers and donations have never been more urgently needed than now,” said Damian. “I want to give back to the community excellent value and bargains, which they can avail of in these stringent times,” said a committed Damian. The spirit of volunteerism is very evident in the shop and Damian was very quick to praise the boundless energy and attitude of people who give of their time in such a generous fashion. “There’s always a great atmosphere here and people love coming to work, even though the work is hard. It is one of the busier shops for donations,” he said.

This will continue for the foreseeable future and newly elected president of the club, Meavis Dempsey told the County Leader that she was delighted the club was still going strong: “It’s great to see that there are still ladies involved with the club. The club meets in the Senior Citizens Centre in Swords every Tuesday from 8.30pm until 10.30pm. Activities include: talks and demonstrations, various outings and weekends away both in Ireland and Europe. The new season starts on the 13th September and will run until June of next year. Second Hand Uniforms In Skerries

Secondary school parents in Skerries have the opportunity to save money this summer. This opportunity is due to a welcome local initiative to sell second hand school uniforms. Opened three months ago, the ‘Charity Begins at Home’ shop in Skerries has already been visited by many residents looking for bargains. Charity Begins At Home is a chain with three shops ,one of which is in Skerries. The charity shops are dedicated to promoting and protecting the health and well-being of children and all proceeds from products sold goes to various charities. Jackie Waters, the shop’s manager, wanted to start looking for a solution to give parents a helping hand when it comes to the expensive task of buying school supplies. Jackie realised that one

By Roxana Neag of the most popular school items needed were the uniforms. She then called on the community to bring in all used and unwanted uniforms. Jackie’s appeal got very good response. Residents in Skerries, Rush, Lusk and Balbriggan all came along with donations. The shop sells a full range of school uniforms for both Juniors and Seniors, particularly for those in secondary school. “It’s great that we have so much support from the community,” said Jackie. People are thinking of other people and donating all they can. It’s this generosity that keeps the shop going strong,” she concluded. Chernobyl Children Have A Ball In Swords The annual Chernobyl Summer Holiday Rest and Recuperation Programme took place recently. The Programme sees Chernobyl children from extremely disadvantaged and contaminated areas visit Ireland every summer. They stay here for one month to give them a holiday of a lifetime. The children stay with ‘host families.’ Swords resident, Fiona Milligan works on the committee and says the summer programme is a perfect way to ensure that children from these disadvantaged areas have a holiday to remember. “The children love it and always have a great time. On the agenda is clean air, healthy food and most importantly lots of fun,” she said. “We couldn’t do it without the support of local organisations and the host families.” Over 100 very excited children arrived in Dublin Airport in early June and were returned home on July 16th. Gas grills are considered the more convenient option you can get instant ignition of fuel and correct temperature consistently. Set up your grill in an open area and always barbecue in a well-ventilated area. When using a barbecue grill, be sure that all parts of the unit are firmly in place and that the grill is stable.

Clean the barbecue grill after each use with a metallic brush to remove any food particles that may have stuck on during cooking. Cleaning avoids the risk of contamination. Keep the meat in the fridge until time to cook it. Do not leave it on the grill in the sun while waiting for the barbecue to heat up. Preheat grills for about ten minutes and oil them lightly to avoid food sticking to them. Place the grill as far as possible from the heat source to avoid flaming. Before cooking the food on a charcoal barbecue, wait until the briquettes are white hot. Never leave your barbeque unattended once its lit up.

You can use lighter fluids to get the charcoal alight - but it needs to be done with care. Sprinkle some all over the charcoal, then wait for a few minutes for it to get absorbed. Fire lighters (broken up into smaller pieces and scattered among the charcoal) can be used, but don’t start cooking until all the pieces are completely burned out, or the smoke will produce some unpleasant fumes.

tremendous feeling of anticipation and excitement is evident in Balbriggan, as the clock counts down to the eagerly awaited Balbriggan Formula Fun day. This innovative project is the brainchild of Balbriggan Formula Fun, with the support of Balbriggan Town Council and Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce. The event will take place this Sunday, 24th July from 12 noon to 8 pm, which will result in traffic restrictions in the town centre during this time. Now that registration is closed, a lottery will take place later this week to inform the lucky winners, who will compete in the races. The age groups for the pedal races are 8 to 9, 10 to 11, 12 to 13 and 14 to 15. There will be a total of 16 karts for each age category (four karts in each heat), as well as novelty races and traders races for those over 16 years of age. Following the heats, the winners of each heat will advance to the final. Above all, this is a family day and everyone is urged to get up and take the whole family and show the community spirit for which Balbriggan is rightly famous. All we need now is for the families of Balbriggan to rally around, and hopefully, if it is successful, will become a permanent fixture on the calendar of events for this great town. A carnival atmosphere is expected and well known rocker, Brush Shields and his band, Skid Row will be the headline act for the day. Family fun and musical entertainment will be provided in the Quay Street car parks. To add to the family fun, there will be bouncy castles, face painting, a food and craft fair, as well as a motor exhibitors’ area, where local motor companies will show off their wares. The three organising bodies

FAMILY FUN DAY GNITE BALBRIGGAN have done trojan work to ensure the success of this unique event. From the moment the initiative was mooted, the respective representatives sprung into action. Anthony Murphy, representing the local Chamber, has been actively encouraging his members to become involved in the venture and we can confidently expect them to ‘rise to the occasion’ with special offers up to and including the day. A really great effort is being made by chamber members in this respect.

Similarly, Ian Lawless, Chairman of Balbriggan Formula Fun said the initiative is “based around road safety using pedal go-kart races,” which are bound to create great excitement in the town. The day is all about fun and families, with entertainment provided for the enjoyment of all. “It will be a free, family fun day,” he said. Meanwhile Brian Murray from the Town Council has been working like a beaver to make sure everything is in ship shape for this great day. The town has never looked in such good condition and is a credit to

all, residents and retailers alike. Every resource within his power has been used to ensure the success of the day. The advertised route of the races has been changed slightly. The races will start on Quay Street at Molly’s Cafe and the karts will race down Quay Street and finish half way along Harbour Terrace. All we need to do now is to add families. So make sure to come along and have a great day.

Great Success Of Balbriggan Farmers’ Market

The Biggest Circulation Of every Friday. “We provide top class, fresh produce to shoppers, which is sourced locally and is therefore the freshest produce available anywhere. As it is locally produced, there is no delay in getting to market,” he said. The atmosphere generated at the market in George’s Square in the town is reminiscent of a continental town, with interesting stalls and great value everywhere. The variety of produce ranges from fruit and vegetables, to more exotic produce like authentic Sicilian food and Ireland’s only buffalo mozzarella cheese. The Farmers’ market will be involved in the

The thriving Balbriggan Fish and Farmers’ market is continuing to prosper as it enters its third year in the town. The market was the first Farmers Market that Dublin Meath Growers (DMG) took part in, so it is fair to say that they started their courtship with the Irish consumer in Balbriggan. Like most first dates it was tentative at the start. Colm Warren, founder of Dublin Meath Growers said, “Dublin Meath Growers are owned by and work for local growers in the North County and Co. Feast Of Festivities In Balbriggan Here’s an event that all food lovers will enjoy. The Balbriggan Food Festival will take place on Saturday, August 20th between 12pm-3pm beside the Harbour in Balbriggan. This year’s festival will have something for everyone to enjoy including live bands, cooking demonstrations, food tasting, over 20 restaurant food stalls and most importantly great food.

Great Malahide Quiz As part of the Malahide Festival, the local Tidy Towns are hosting the Great Malahide Quiz for the second year running. It takes place on Thursday 21st July at 8pm in the Grand Hotel. All the brains of Malahide, together with their friends and families will gather in the Grand Hotel to see who will take the title for 2011. Last year it was won by the well known genius and chess expert, Vincent Bissett and his team, but who will wrestle the title from him this year or will he return to reclaim his championship! The Quiz

was well supported last year by businesses and residents alike and is used as the main fundraiser for the work done by the Malahide Tidy Towns group. Gerry Rafferty and the Tidy Towns volunteers have been working non-stop over the summer to improve the beautiful village of Malahide, and to gain maximum points for the town in the National competition. All are welcome and an entrance fee will be €10 per person with 4 people to each team. There will be a raffle held during the break.

River Valley Maracycle Success Nine St. Finian’s Wheelers from the local GAA club in River Valley completed the Dublin to Belfast leg of the Maracycle recently. The guys trained hard again this year and managed to cut their time by a massive two hours. Brian O’Neill set the pace for the elders, Jimmy Conway, Pat Farrell, Derek Hammond, Brendan and John

“This year’s food festival, aside from being a fantastic day out, will be great for all the local businesses around Balbriggan,” said Sean Crossan, who is on the festival sub committee and is also member of the Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce. “The festival will bring out all the local restauranteurs and food growers, so visitors will see the best of what our town has to offer.” “We hope to have as much success as we did in 2010, when we held the festival for the first time. We had over 600 people attend and we plan to do it bigger and better this year,” he concluded.

As always, André will be joined by his famous Johann Strauss Orchestra. The Orchestra, which he founded, began in 1987 with 12 members, but now performs with between 40 and 50 musicians. At the time the Orchestra first toured Europe, there emerged a renewed interest in waltz music. The revival began in the Netherlands and was ignited by their recording of the Second Waltz from Shostakovich’s Jazz Suites. As a result, Rieu became known as the waltz King. Rieu and his orchestra have performed throughout Europe, in North America, and Japan. Winning a number of awards, including two World Music Awards, their recordings have gone gold and platinum in many countries, including 8-times Platinum in his native Netherlands.

Malahide Parish Prepares For Eucharistic Congress

Pictured here is the group from Malahide Parish along with the Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Diarmuid Martin, at the recent preparation mass ahead of the International Eucharistic Congress which will take place in Dublin next year.

First Impressions Of Ireland The very first impression of Ireland I got was the view of the rough coast with its cliffs and the glowing green meadows in the background. It was breathtaking, especially when you are not used to living near the sea. I was flabbergasted because I’ve never seen such a big city without skyscrapers. Leaving the plane, I took some deep breaths of fresh air and was thrilled because it‘s so clean and

Free Event for Entrepreneurs and New Businesses Swords firm, McInerney Saunders and DCU are hosting a free StartUp Breakfast which will be held in DCU Business School on Wednesday 27th July 2011 at 7.45 am. The aim of the event is to provide entrepreneurs and startup companies with free advice, as well as being a networking opportunity to meet successful and like minded individuals.

A group from Malahide Parish recently attended a special preparation ceremony ahead of the International Eucharistic Congress, which is due to take place in Dublin next year. The preparation ceremony, held in Knock, saw members from every parish around the North County come together to attend the special Mass and each parish brought their own Eucharistic

Candles along for it. Speaking to the County Leader, Jo Morris who organised the trip for the parish, said the day was a great success: “It was really a brilliant day. Everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves and it was great to see so many people come together for the Mass,” she said. The ceremony proved to be very popular with over 16,000 people attending overall.

Hannigans

Family Butcher

A perfect example of this adaptability is master butcher, David Hannigan, who has just opened up a retail unit in Centra in River Valley. David is already well known as the proprietor of the hugely successful Hannigan’s Butchers in Applewood Village and is hoping to replicate this success in the busy River Valley outlet. David spoke passionately about his work ethic and what he hopes to bring to shoppers in Centra. “I am here in Applewood for the past eight years and have worked very hard to build up the business to where it is today. I will bring quality, value and a 7 days a week service to the new shop, which will complement the already superb service provided by Centra.” He also spoke about the diverse population of Swords and how he plans to cater for all shoppers. “I will bring the unique Hannigan branded products, which are suitable for

“Our pork comes from Cavan, our beef from Kildare, our chicken is from Mayo and our succulent lamb comes from the hills of Donegal,” a proud David said. He is utterly dedicated to his trade and it is no surprise that his Applewood shop continues to thrive, even in recessionary times. He is very strict about providing the freshest, highest quality product to all of his valued customers. “I have always done so and my

loyal customers in Applewood, whom I wish to thank so much for their patronage over the years, are a testament to this.” A family man, David is married to Celine and they have two daughters, Chantelle and Shauna, all of whom work in Applewood and a son called David. It is expected that Chantelle will move to the River Valley branch in the near future. “My son plays for Home Farm Football club and I like to try and see him as much as possible, but as I work 7 days a week, it is not too easy to spare the time,” he said. Hannigan's are also involved in the wholesale business and provide meat products for some local hotels, restaurants and care homes and are constantly

trying to expand the business. A hard working and motivated man, David vows to ensure that Centra customers will view his service as a one stop shop for all their meat requirements. “I worked 7 days a week to ensure that our Applewood shop became the success that it is, and I

intend to do the same in River Valley. The friendly and professional staff in both outlets, allied to a motivation to provide excellent food, great choice and value for money are all indicators that David’s latest venture will lead to continuing success for this enterprising businessman.

He is a member of the Association of Craft Butchers of Ireland, which has the highest standard of butchery in Ireland. “Craft butchers are much sought after and our move to River Valley is testament to this. Mark Leavy, proprietor of Centra already provides an excellent service to the community and he has been particularly generous to me. I intend to enhance this top quality service still further.” The atmosphere in the shop is very conducive to a good working relationship. “Mark and his team couldn’t have been more friendly and supportive to us in our new venture,” maintains David. An indication of his total commitment is that he has on going ‘Specials’ every week which are bound to attract great attention from 'choosey' shop-

Proud Day For St Cronan’s School

INTENSIVE REPEAT LEAVING CERTIFICATE COURSE

St Cronan’s Junior National School in Swords celebrated the raising of the second green flag recently. It was a wonderful ceremony held by the school’s green committee. The raising of the flag, which took place in the school garden, celebrated the pupils’ and committee’s efforts to conserve energy, gas and electricity, throughout the academic year. Officiating at the ceremony was Cllr Peter Coyle (Lab) who raised the flag along with the head of the Green Committee, Ms Blake, and the School Principal, Ms Manton. Cllr Coyle said he was extremely “proud and honoured” to lead proceedings for the ceremony and congratulated the work of the pupil committee and its head, Ms Blake. “The school had taken the initiative very seriously,” said Ms Manton, and had even visited the Dublin Airport Authority in a bid to learn some conservation methods. Also awarded on the day were the school’s garden factor results which involved a plant box project taken on by five classes. The winners were Ms McSweeney’s class who had planted box five. The class celebrated the win with a trip to McDonalds the following day.

BUTLER Swords Donabate & Portrane Rolestown & St. Margarets Santry - Meakstown Fingal - Dublin North and West

Just how accessible are our public representatives? Do you know the names of the County councillors and Dail deputies in your area? Would you be in a position to contact them, if required to do so? Every four years or thereabouts, people all over the country set about the arduous task of electing our public representatives. These generally fall into the categories of county councillors and Dail deputies, who are there to represent us in at local level in the case of councillors, and at national level in the case of Dail deputies. In total, there are 24 elected councillors to sit on the county council, plus another nine elected members of Balbriggan Town Council. There are four elected TDs in the Dublin North constituency and another four in Dublin West, to which a large portion of Swords is attached. Further to this, there are three TDs from Dublin North East, which includes a large portion of Portmarnock residents. This indicates just how well represented we are but are we really? These people are elected to ensure that our issues and concerns are being attended to. They are tasked with making sure that we are aware of the decisions being made in the Dail and the council chamber that will impact on our daily lives. These can range from the maintenance of public services, like transport, upkeep of local areas and making sure that the area is serviced to the highest possible level. Our own personal problems can be aired in clinics, which are usually conducted regularly by our TDs and Councillors. The recent pre-election promises filled the air and nothing was beyond the capability of the candidates. They were prepared to take the stars down from the sky for us, in return for our precious vote. Now that the election has been won and lost, some of the victors seem to have taken to the hills. Constituents find it

hard to contact them. Politicians who are serious about representing their constituents are always easy to find. They display their names, addresses and contact details in media outlets and billboards. They become immediately identifiable and become the ‘to go to person’ in the event of having your grievances and concerns aired and dealt with. Local councillors, in the main, are hard working and eager to help, but there are a few who are inclined to hide and hang onto the coat tails of more senior politicians. Local residents couldn’t be blamed for believing that once they have secured your vote, they have very little to offer the community by way of initiatives and making themselves visible and available to their communities. In sharp contrast to the run up to the last election, when politicians of all persuasions swarmed all over the region, reality is somewhat different. They made sure that every door was knocked

on and each problem was taken on board, with the ensuing promise of immediate resolution and genuine concern. They knew the first names of everyone and the well being our your dearly, recently departed father was enquired about. Oh, if that could only continue, what a world we would live in!. Alas,

the willingness of our elected representatives to visit areas of previously broken promises is sorely limited and we are left with just a few, genuine and concerned politicians who are willing and ready to be identified and face the task to which they were elected in the first place - to serve the people.

Let The Light In Since we can never be certain of when the sun will shine, we should at least take advantage of those bright evenings while we still have them. It’s as simple as changing those curtains. Forget about those dark heavy drapes; instead think light, translucent curtains that will let the sun and light breezes into your home. A light airy curtain can transform your home! Just think of all the extra sunlight and those lovely summer breezes blowing a breath of fresh air into your home.

I say this time and time again, but one of the easiest and most cost effective ways to make an impact is with the addition of fresh flowers. I recommend fresh cut, brightly coloured flowers either from your own garden (if you happen to be so lucky) or from the local florist. Place them in a light and understated vase; avoid heavy, dark or bulky vases and let the flowers take centre stage. Placement should be casual and on table/counter tops to ensure the flowers are always visible. Consider the foyer, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom as prime locations.

Never underestimate the importance of cleaning windows. Most people only give them a thorough cleaning (outside and in) once or twice a year but try to do it more often, especially in the summer. It will instantly brighten any room. Minimise clutter. Objects that add warmth and coziness in the winter can look too heavy in the summer. Pack up a few items and give the remaining items breathing room. Editing excess objects can have an uplifting effect on a room, and fewer objects taking up space means fewer objects to collect dust.

Malahide ‘Afloat’ At Festival There will be an added nautical flavour to this year’s Malahide Has It Festival, which will take place on July 23rd. The introduction of a new feature entitled ‘Malahide Afloat’ is being provided by the three organisations most closely associated with the town’s most natural resource - Malahide Yacht Club, Malahide Sea Scouts and Malahide Marina. In what is a loose-knit collaboration, the three groups are hosting activities which amply demonstrate Malahide’s marine ties and so encourage even greater usage of the town’s marine-based facilities and its renowned seaside setting. Malahide Yacht Club is hosting its annual ‘Wicklow Vase’ Race when dinghies

Boats will gather in the Lower Estuary from 1.30pm and the race will start at 3.00pm. Malahide Sea Scouts - one of the largest Scout groups in the country - have planned a day of action afloat. There will be skiff rowing races, canoe races and canoe polo, all taking place in the Lower Estuary. The Scout Den at the bottom of St.James’s Terrace will also be hosting an open day for prospective new scouts and their families to check out all the facilities on offer at Malahide Sea Scouts. All are welcome to attend what is sure to be a day of vivid colour and frenetic activity afloat.
