Companies Queuing To Invest In Swords The widely held belief that Swords and the North County region is now generally regarded as one of the most desirable places to set up business, has been given a major boost. The recent flurry of activity by foreign companies to invest here has provided a very welcome boost for the local economy. Michael Greene, Commercial Director with local estate agents, Shane Redmond, confirmed to the County Leader, that there was a lot of interest among large multi national companies in locating in Swords. “Tesco have a planning application for a supermarket and retail outlets, as well as a medical centre, cafe and restaurant over two floors.” This will be located on the Holywell Relief Road. The floor space covers 5,309 sq metres, with car parking space for 299 cars. This news has generated a welter of excitement and is certain to inject much needed life into that part of the town. “The employment

By Patrick Finnegan potential in building such a project, will ensure that many skilled, but unemployed trades people in the region will, at last, be able to ply their skills locally,” said Greene. Another project that is generating excitement in the town is the proposed building of a new Applegreen Service Station on North Street. The expected throughput of traffic here, is viewed by many as a vital injection of life to this end of the town. Much needed footfall here will be very welcomed by businesses, who may have felt isolated from the hustle and bustle of Main Street. The imminent opening of Lidl on Rathbeale Road in the next few weeks, has been followed by news that German retail giants, Aldi are considering moving to Swords. According to Greene, “Aldi are looking at several sites in Swords. This is all good news for the town and environs and the creation of construction and long terms jobs is to be

welcomed. The more businesses that are attracted to Swords, the more appealing the town is for residents and visitors alike,” he concluded. The prospect of these vital projects coming to fruition will remind many of the Celtic Tiger era, with the welcome return of the ‘Breakfast Roll Man’ in his high viz vest and hard hat. It will also go a long way to stopping the hateful haemorrhage of local workers making the short trip to Dublin Airport, in search of work in the four corners of the globe. It would appear that the excellent road network in the area and the proximity of Swords to vital centres, such as city and Dublin Airport are, at last, bearing fruit. The desirability of Swords and the North County area in general, as a place to set up business, has never been in doubt. This just copper fastens this belief. Fingal Dublin Chamber CEO, Tony Lambert gave a guarded welcome to the news. He

said,” Swords is obviously an attractive place for investment and is a magnet for various retail groups, who want to locate in the area. The Chamber welcomes any investment that provides commercial facilities and creates jobs.” However, he issued a note of caution when he spoke about proper planning being in place. “What we don’t want to happen is that by overdevelopment, the retailing fabric of the area is damaged. We read about these everyday in the newspapers. Drogheda is a particular case in point here,” he said. The fact that large multi national companies are prepared to invest vast sums of money into our area, is true testament that the North County region is, indeed, open for business. Many believe that the advent of these projects is destined to provide a trigger point in reviving the local economy, which has already seen modest growth in the past few months and hopefully will spark the flame of the greater, national recovery.

The children in the school are currently learning all about biodiversity and how it impacts on their lives. Holmpatrick National School is the first

school in the North County area to apply for the Biodiversity Flag. The school has been allocated an organic allotment by the County Council, which has been paid for by Skerries Guerrilla Gardeners. The school

allotment is a communal resource, intended to help children understand what’s involved in growing our own food, but also will allow them to understand more about the biodiversity of the Skerries area.

Rush is the only town in the North County to receive a donation from the initiative and was delighted to be chosen for the scheme. The Rush Tidy Towns committee is expecting delivery of the bulbs

It’s a great start for the committee’s 2012 tilt at the national Tidy Towns competition, where it hopes once again to improve the town’s score and bring national attention to the beautiful, heritage rich town.

Rush Garda Station will close on April 29th, but the Rush community had a chance to have their questions answered on the closure at a meeting in St. Maur’s GAA Club last week. Gardai from Rush, Lusk and Balbriggan and local deputy, Brendan Ryan (Lab) attended the meeting too, along with local residents, the Rush Community Council and Rush Scout group.

By Sorcha J0witt Ryan acknowledged that cuts have to be made but that the closure was regrettable: “The loss of a station is a bad development and we wish it wasn’t happening,” he said. Inspector Declan Yates from Balbriggan Garda Station said the closure was non negotiable, but reassured the community of Rush that there will be “no loss of service to the people of

Rush.” All of the Rush Gardai will be re-allocated to other stations in the district and Inspector Yates said his preference would be to send them to Lusk or Skerries. Some wanted an explanation as to why Rush was one of the chosen stations. “Rush needs more policing after hours, not less,” concluded Eamonn Price from Rush Community Council.”

Pictured here are L-R: Sargeant Brendan Walsh, Inspector Declan Yates, Inspector Kieran Houlihan and Karl McManus at the recent meeting regarding the closure of Rush Garda Station.

Two friends have raised around €1,000 for the Irish Cancer Society following a hugely successful Charity Ball held in Swords recently. The event, held in the Swords Manor Inn, was organised by locals, Thomas Boveridge and Grace McGrath, who put a great deal of work in to ensure the night ran as smoothly as possible. The well attended Ball turned out to be a great night with a charitable raffle raising further funds. The pair were extremely grateful to all in attendance, thanking the Star pub for providing food, the Manor Inn for hosting the night, and Dave Reynolds for providing the music. They also acknowledged the generosity of friends and family for their donations. ”We’d just like to thank everyone for coming out and for generously donating to such a great cause,” they said. All proceeds from the evening will go towards improving the lives of those affected by cancer.

Love Irish At The Pavilions There was a distinctly ‘green feel’ to the Pavilions Shopping Centre in Swords, last Thursday and Friday, 15th and 16th March. The enterprising shopping centre provided the venue for a Support Irish Food promotion, where local firms displayed their produce and provided free samples to customers, in the run up to St Patrick’s Day. Love Irish Food is a very worthwhile exercise and goes a long way in promoting the

best that we have to offer Centre Director, Ian Hunter was delighted to support the campaign and was ”happy to support Irish growers.” He felt that it added great colour and atmosphere to the centre and brought focus to our national food. Local North County firms included Keogh’s Crisps, who are based in Oldtown and Sam’s Potatoes, also from the Oldtown area. The various stands provided colourful produce, which shoppers were glad to sample and there was a genuine feeling of pride that our indigenous products were on display for all to sample.

What’s cooking in this kitchen? Brand new and everybody is already talking about the new kid in town. The Bracken Grill Steak & Seafood Restaurant is the new child of Luke Moriarty and his team at the Bracken Court Hotel. General Manager, Rory Keogh is explaining the inspiration behind The Bracken Grill: “Think late-night Chicago steakhouse: polished booths that enclose years of secrets, big slabs of aromatic prime rib, sparkly cocktail glasses clinking at every table, wisps of smoke drifting through the spotlight that shines on a woman singing the blues. The Bracken Grill ... A Steak House and Seafood Restaurant ... is all this - minus the years, [the smoke] and the blues.”

All our steaks come from locally sourced Irish Heifer Beef and are dusted in house marinade. All of our fish comes from locally sourced sustainable sources so as to ensure fish for future generations. Experience the combination of charred cuts, perfectly paired with decadent sides set in a siren-red interior where old-world glamour meets modern style and sophistication. The Bracken Grill is a feast for the senses. The mouthwatering aroma of seared beef greets diners as soon as they turn the door’s handle. The sexy and slightly masculine vibe that comes from curved lines and luxurious rich leather booths brings them in for a comfy embrace. And then the prime steaks, carefully grilled to perfection with optional indulgences like crab and shrimp toppings, makes primal palates rejoice. The polished, dark leather booths hum with the conversation of well-heeled diners leaning over slender martinis and rotund globes of red wine. Waiters all in black, whisked by bearing trays of succulent steaks. The clink of glasses at the bar mixed with the lilt of the piano, which was playing a song that never goes out of style: ‘You must remember this, a kiss is just a kiss’...The Bracken Grill is as timeless as the song...with its dim glow and din of dishes and discussion so soothing that it could be sold on iTunes, The Bracken Grill looks as if it has always been in the heart of Balbriggan.

The Bracken Grill offers you an excellent choice of menus. Our talented Chefs use only the freshest seasonal ingredients to prepare our mouth watering dishes and allowing you to experience the best in Irish hospitality, food, drink and entertainment. We are powered by customer service You are very welcome and please allow us to make you part of our family.

The ancient game of Golf has long been viewed as the preserve of the rich and privileged that smacked of elitism. It was played by middleaged men and women in private clubs around the country. This image had a semblance of truth about it up to about 30 years ago, but in the intervening time, golf has changed out of all proportions to become one of the most soughtafter leisure activities around. In this time, golf courses have sprung up all over the place and the game reached a peak in popularity among most

people. It suddenly became affordable. However, not all people were drawn to golf. Teenagers seemed to be immune to the attractions of this great game. It was considered as ‘fuddy duddy’ and not ‘sexy’ to be seen carrying golf clubs around. Football and other traditional sports were seen as the popular pursuits. This was all about to change in a dramatic way. The tremendous success of Irish golfers, including Padraig Harrington, Darren Clarke and Graeme McDowell, all Major winners propelled Ireland to the forefront of

world golf. Their contribution to successful Ryder Cup teams has been immeasurable. Enter a certain Irishman, Rory McIlroy and now you have a completely different scenario. The new World Number 1 has given golf the impetus it so badly needed. This affable 22 year old was about to send golf into orbit. Now, young boys and girls regard it as sexy to play golf and to be seen to play. Young girls

see him as a pin-up and young boys view him as a role model to be copied. Similarly the young Cavan twins, Lisa and Leona Maguire have added glamour to the game, particularly for young girls. To cater for this new demand for golf, we are extremely fortunate here in the North County, to have an abundance of excellent golf courses, ranging from the finest links and parkland courses to be found anywhere. Moreover, golf has now become highly affordable, with clubs vying for new members,

resulting in incredible value for new members. With the influx of new juvenile and junior members and the newfound interest among this age group, most local clubs conduct clinics for young members every Saturday morning in summer. Top class professionals are available at each club to provide lessons and impart their vast knowledge of the game to new members. Well stocked pro shops have the latest clubs and equipment to ensure that you are well togged out to enjoy your game.

Golf at Roganstown Hotel, near Dublin Airport Roganstown is one of the few golf hotels in Dublin to offer both golf club membership and country club membership, where members have full use of the golf and leisure facilities. Frank’s talk is on Wednesday, 28th March in the Town Hall, George’s Square, Balbriggan. As part of his college work he conducted a survey and analysis of the old maps of the area and will share his thoughts and findings on the topic. Miracle Prayer Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked you for many favours. This time, I ask you for a very special one. Take it Dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your broken heart, where your father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour and not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favour will be granted no matter how impossible. Never known to fail. DK
