Companies Queuing To Invest In Swords The widely held belief that Swords and the North County region is now generally regarded as one of the most desirable places to set up business, has been given a major boost. The recent flurry of activity by foreign companies to invest here has provided a very welcome boost for the local economy. Michael Greene, Commercial Director with local estate agents, Shane Redmond, confirmed to the County Leader, that there was a lot of interest among large multi national companies in locating in Swords. “Tesco have a planning application for a supermarket and retail outlets, as well as a medical centre, cafe and restaurant over two floors.” This will be located on the Holywell Relief Road. The floor space covers 5,309 sq metres, with car parking space for 299 cars. This news has generated a welter of excitement and is certain to inject much needed life into that part of the town. “The employment
By Patrick Finnegan potential in building such a project, will ensure that many skilled, but unemployed trades people in the region will, at last, be able to ply their skills locally,” said Greene. Another project that is generating excitement in the town is the proposed building of a new Applegreen Service Station on North Street. The expected throughput of traffic here, is viewed by many as a vital injection of life to this end of the town. Much needed footfall here will be very welcomed by businesses, who may have felt isolated from the hustle and bustle of Main Street. The imminent opening of Lidl on Rathbeale Road in the next few weeks, has been followed by news that German retail giants, Aldi are considering moving to Swords. According to Greene, “Aldi are looking at several sites in Swords. This is all good news for the town and environs and the creation of construction and long terms jobs is to be
welcomed. The more businesses that are attracted to Swords, the more appealing the town is for residents and visitors alike,” he concluded. The prospect of these vital projects coming to fruition will remind many of the Celtic Tiger era, with the welcome return of the ‘Breakfast Roll Man’ in his high viz vest and hard hat. It will also go a long way to stopping the hateful haemorrhage of local workers making the short trip to Dublin Airport, in search of work in the four corners of the globe. It would appear that the excellent road network in the area and the proximity of Swords to vital centres, such as city and Dublin Airport are, at last, bearing fruit. The desirability of Swords and the North County area in general, as a place to set up business, has never been in doubt. This just copper fastens this belief. Fingal Dublin Chamber CEO, Tony Lambert gave a guarded welcome to the news. He
said,” Swords is obviously an attractive place for investment and is a magnet for various retail groups, who want to locate in the area. The Chamber welcomes any investment that provides commercial facilities and creates jobs.” However, he issued a note of caution when he spoke about proper planning being in place. “What we don’t want to happen is that by overdevelopment, the retailing fabric of the area is damaged. We read about these everyday in the newspapers. Drogheda is a particular case in point here,” he said. The fact that large multi national companies are prepared to invest vast sums of money into our area, is true testament that the North County region is, indeed, open for business. Many believe that the advent of these projects is destined to provide a trigger point in reviving the local economy, which has already seen modest growth in the past few months and hopefully will spark the flame of the greater, national recovery.
