Skerries Roads Are A Safety Hazard By Patrick Finnegan

T

he terrible condition of the approach roads to Skerries is a cause of concern to many local residents. The roads, which include the Dublin Road on the Skerries side of the railway bridge and the Balbriggan Road are in a particularly poor state. Dublin Road is the main thoroughfare out of the town to Swords and on to the city, has, according to local residents, “become a

safety hazard for motorists and cyclists alike.” The road runs from Thomas Ashe Street, past the Community Centre right up as far as the roundabout at the top of Miller’s Lane. The sides of the road are collapsing, due in the main to the harsh winter we have experienced and also to the perceived neglect of the council to repairing it. It is particularly hazardous between Martine Court and the entrance to Mill Hill estate. Skerries has always been one of the tourism capitals of the North County and has a long tradition of

welcoming people to the town from the city and indeed from all over the world as day trippers and for more extended visits. Ray Hunt from the Tourism Office in the town spoke of the decrepit state of the roads in the town and particularly the Balbriggan Road. He told the County Leader, “From a tourism point of view, it gives a very bad impression to visitors. In tourism, first impressions count. You have to make the visitors feel that they have made the right decision in coming to visit a place and if that first impression is knocks and bumps which they’re driving into, then that’s not good,” he said. Speaking to the County Leader, locals expressed their fears that a terrible accident is set to happen on Dublin Road unless the County Council gets its act together and prioritises the upgrading of this road. Resident, John Corcoran complained about the damage caused to his car. “I’ve had my wheel damaged, not the tyre. It is an alloy wheel, which cost me a lot of money. The council need to get their priorities right. They have just done some repairs at the railway bridge, but this spot filling is no good, as it washes away in the rain. Motorists have to go into the centre of the road to avoid the damage and this is so dangerous. I don’t allow my daughter to cycle on this road,” he said. Continued on page 16

Corduff School Dedicates Garden To Former Principal On Friday 18th June, Corduff National School, Lusk welcomed the Garda Band as part of their celebrations to dedicate their new school garden to retired Principal, Mr Seamus Tynan. Unfortunately the day was very wet, which curtailed much of the activities to indoors. The children and all present enjoyed the lovely music of the band. This event took place almost two years to the day since the school community made a promise to Seamus to develop a new school garden and to name it in his honour. Seamus was the Teaching Principal at Corduff for 35 years. He had previously taught in Rush NS and had an amazing 41 years unbroken service. He retired from Corduff in June 2009 amid huge celebrations. “Seamus always shared his love of nature and gardening with his pupils,” said Anna McKeown, Corduff Principal. “He is an accomplished musician and generations of children developed a love of traditional Irish music and the tin whistle under his tutelage. I can’t think of a more appropriate way to honour his service to the school than to combine the music of the Garda Band with the success of our new garden project.” Continued on page 16
