Skerries Roads Are A Safety Hazard By Patrick Finnegan
T
he terrible condition of the approach roads to Skerries is a cause of concern to many local residents. The roads, which include the Dublin Road on the Skerries side of the railway bridge and the Balbriggan Road are in a particularly poor state. Dublin Road is the main thoroughfare out of the town to Swords and on to the city, has, according to local residents, “become a

safety hazard for motorists and cyclists alike.” The road runs from Thomas Ashe Street, past the Community Centre right up as far as the roundabout at the top of Miller’s Lane. The sides of the road are collapsing, due in the main to the harsh winter we have experienced and also to the perceived neglect of the council to repairing it. It is particularly hazardous between Martine Court and the entrance to Mill Hill estate. Skerries has always been one of the tourism capitals of the North County and has a long tradition of
welcoming people to the town from the city and indeed from all over the world as day trippers and for more extended visits. Ray Hunt from the Tourism Office in the town spoke of the decrepit state of the roads in the town and particularly the Balbriggan Road. He told the County Leader, “From a tourism point of view, it gives a very bad impression to visitors. In tourism, first impressions count. You have to make the visitors feel that they have made the right decision in coming to visit a place and if that first impression is knocks and bumps which they’re driving into, then that’s not good,” he said. Speaking to the County Leader, locals expressed their fears that a terrible accident is set to happen on Dublin Road unless the County Council gets its act together and prioritises the upgrading of this road. Resident, John Corcoran complained about the damage caused to his car. “I’ve had my wheel damaged, not the tyre. It is an alloy wheel, which cost me a lot of money. The council need to get their priorities right. They have just done some repairs at the railway bridge, but this spot filling is no good, as it washes away in the rain. Motorists have to go into the centre of the road to avoid the damage and this is so dangerous. I don’t allow my daughter to cycle on this road,” he said. Continued on page 16

Corduff School Dedicates Garden To Former Principal On Friday 18th June, Corduff National School, Lusk welcomed the Garda Band as part of their celebrations to dedicate their new school garden to retired Principal, Mr Seamus Tynan. Unfortunately the day was very wet, which curtailed much of the activities to indoors. The children and all present enjoyed the lovely music of the band. This event took place almost two years to the day since the school community made a promise to Seamus to develop a new school garden and to name it in his honour. Seamus was the Teaching Principal at Corduff for 35 years. He had previously taught in Rush NS and had an amazing 41 years unbroken service. He retired from Corduff in June 2009 amid huge celebrations. “Seamus always shared his love of nature and gardening with his pupils,” said Anna McKeown, Corduff Principal. “He is an accomplished musician and generations of children developed a love of traditional Irish music and the tin whistle under his tutelage. I can’t think of a more appropriate way to honour his service to the school than to combine the music of the Garda Band with the success of our new garden project.” Continued on page 16

By Jennifer McShane Student, Luke Madden from Swords will be travelling to Malawi in Africa on the 24th of June to teach in an SOS children’s village. Luke, who is in his final year of teaching in Hope University in Liverpool, will be travelling over with nine other volunteers to teach children who would not have access to education facilities. Speaking to the County Leader, Luke says this is something that he’s always been interested in: “Ever since I was 15, I’ve been interested in doing volunteer work like this. I think its great that I can help those that are deprived of education and it will be a fantastic experience overall.” Luke has set up a Just Luke Madden Giving account, so that anyone can donate to the cause if they wish. “I am in the process of trying to get some funds together so that I can donate them when I’m over there. I would be so grateful to anyone who would like to donate to help support a very worthy cause.” he said. Please visit: www.justgiving.com/luke-madden if you would like to make a donation.
Every year, the Clarion Dublin Airport Hotel plays host to a flock of ducks who inhabit the pond at the rear of the hotel. Hotel manager, Allen Clarke said that this year, the survival rate of the new brood was the highest yet. “They are very welcome visitors each year and, while the present flock are due to leave shortly, we look forward to next year’s arrival,” he said.

Developer Forced To Upgrade Lusk Road There was great news for residents of Minister’s Road and Dun Emer estates in Lusk recently, with the issuing of a court order, compelling the developer to complete upgrade work on the road. The court case between the County Council and developer, O’Dwyer Nolan ended with Judge Linnane ruling in favour of the local authority. She ordered both parties to meet under Section 160 of the Planning
and Development Act 2000. This area has been a safety hazard for motorists and pedestrians alike for a long time now. The Order requires that upgrade work be carried out to comply with the Planning Permission Reference F04A-0202 and in accordance with drawings referred to and furnished to the County Council in February 2005. The order required O’Dwyer Nolan to carry out
these works within a period of six months. The developer is expected to lodge an appeal against the order in the High Court. County Mayor and local resident, Cllr. Ken Farrell was thrilled with the outcome. “I’m absolutely delighted with the order and these works will help to alleviate the plight of residents of Dun Emer particularly in regard to the matter of pedestrian linkage and ensures the safety of the children who live here and also for the population of Lusk as a whole,” he said.
Balbriggan Group Relies On Donations Balbriggan youth group, Remember Us, has said it is now almost solely reliant on fundraising efforts and donations having had much of its funding cut in the last two years. Remember Us aims to provide a social outlet for young people with special needs whilst offering support and information to the parents, families and carers of the children. A spokesperson for the group says it is
becoming more difficult to give the support needed thanks to the cuts: “We’re getting cutbacks all the time but we’re still providing the service we always have so we’re relying on fundraising and donations more than ever before. With more looking to join the group from all over the North County, it does put more pressure on us. We really appreciate all the donations and support that we receive.”

Uplifting Instance Of Kindness In Balbriggan By Roxana Neag An uplifting and feel good story happened in Balbriggan recently. A women went into the pharmacy looking for medication, but discovered that she had not enough money to pay for the entire prescription. The owner of Balbriggan Pharmacy, located right in the heart of the town, Paul Harnett gave her the medication, smiled and asked her to go home and come back the next day with the rest of money. Its almost as if we had turned the clock back to a different era, before money became such a god. “Being nice is simply part of our service. It is important to look after our clients and build a relationship with our customers. My staff and I would like to be treated like this,” he said. He testifies that he cannot ignore the crowd of people who have
support vessels. Their goal was to row to Holyhead, a 100 kilometre distance within 12 hours. They arrived in 11 hours and 55 minutes.

lost their jobs and are queuing everyday at the Social Welfare Balbriggan branch, which is right on the next street to his pharmacy. He admitted that he had some bad experiences with his clients in the past, but despite all, he keeps trusting people. “I have a sixth sense about my customers. I think it is just experience,” concluded the pharmacist, from whom many people have something to learn. To complete a nice story, the woman was as good as her word and came back the following day with the rest of the money. There are certain simple things which happen everyday that restore your faith in humanity. Paul Hartnett
The conditions were almost perfect when the crew set off, but the teams were rowing against the tide for the last three hours. The team was greeted by the Royal Navy and over a hundred locals when they arrived in Holyhead. Spokesman, Brian Dempsey said, “Every single person on the team really gave it 100 per cent. They just couldn’t have given any more. Literally they couldn’t get out of the boat at the end. They were physically exhausted,” he said. The row is expected to raise €15,000 for The 3T’s, Turning the tide of suicide charity. The members of the Dublin Airport Police, Fire and Rescue Service are believed to be the first Irish emergency service team to complete this row.

Malahide Landmark Nears Completion By Jennifer McShane Following up on our story of the work of the replacement of the landmark Malahide Fountain in the Grand Hotel, the County Leader has been told the project is almost completed. This serves as great news for the town as everything will be organised in time for the Tidy Towns judging, which is just weeks away. Speaking to the County Leader, Gerry Rafferty from the Malahide
Seeing The Difference As my internship at the County Leader will come to an end on the
German and the Irish way of life. Some of them were new to me “My name is Sascha Schlichtinger (20) and I’m from Germany. Having passed my final exams last summer and having done community service, I work for a German newspaper. To improve my English and getting working skills, I’m doing an internship at the North County Leader”.
24th of June, I guess it is time for a resume. Having spent the last six weeks living and working in North County Dublin. I realised that there are differences in the
and difficult to get used to, but some I would like to take back home with me. First of all it started with the friendliness Ireland is famous for. Nearly everybody
Tidy Towns committee says that the final touches are being put so that the flower bed will be ready for the judging: “The plumbing and electrical stage is almost finished and then we just have to paint it. The County Council have very nicely donated all the plants for the flower bed which we really appreciate. Gemma Carr from the Council has been especially helpful with the project so we’d just like to thank her for all her efforts.” “We’re really looking forward to the judging. Everyone has put so much hard work in and we’re so appreciative. It’s been a real team effort,” he said.
gives his best to help you, is interested in your story and really wants to know how you are. This is something I really enjoyed and would love to have in Germany. Another quite simple example, which was very impressive to me, is, that everybody queues at the bus stop and waits until people get out. It’s sad that you wouldn’t find that in Germany, where chaotic situations arise when a bus stops. And it was very interesting to me, that Irish people just have a little snack during their lunch and a bigger dinner in the evening. This would be the other way round in Germany, and I have to admit it took me some time to get used to that. People remain

calm and relaxed, even in stressful situations, which keeps the good and friendly atmosphere. So, being to Ireland and working in North County Dublin has been a very good and nice experience. I never want to forget the Irish way of life as it has been better in some parts than the German.

Remarkable Record By Local Cricketer A North County cricket player was celebrating last week following the 509th dismissal of his career, a wicket keeping Leinster record. Dara Armstrong, the North County Cricket Club skipper and wicket keeper, broke the record in a cup game against Terenure when he bagged the one dismissal needed to dislodge former record holder, Charlie Kavanagh, to become the sole holder of the most dismissals in Leinster Cricket history. Armstrong, aged 38, has been with North County club in Balrothery for the last 11 years and has an average rate of 1.65 dismissals a game and 32 per season. He also holds the record for the most dismissals in one season
with 54 victims falling foul of the record breaker in 2000. With a senior career spanning over 16 seasons, the North County skipper was delighted to be the new record holder. Speaking to the County Leader following the achievement, the Rush man said: “To get there is nice. After all the hard work, graft and 10 years of commitment, it’s nice to receive some sort of recognition. People kept saying that I was only a few away (from the record) as I got closer, so to do it finishes it off nicely. It’s the icing on the cake,” he said. Armstrong now plans to expand on the newly acquired record insisting
Balbriggan Goes Bats Balbriggan Tidy Towns Biodiversity officer, Zoe Nelson, was delighted to report this week that the Balbriggan Tidy Towns team have made exciting progress regarding their ‘Bat Box’ project. Six summer roosting bat boxes have been constructed by volunteer Phil Curtis, who has constructed the boxes in compliance with advice published by the Bat Conservation Society. Bats require summer roosting located near water so that they can go out after dusk and feed on flying insects. Over
By Jennifer McShane the last number of years the reduction in the number of suitable trees has meant the bats are finding it more difficult to find roosting sites where they can snuggle down during the day and rest in groups. “These bat boxes will provide luxury accommodation for six colonies of Balbriggan bats.”’ Zoe Nelson informed the County Leader. The ‘Bat Box’ project started in August 2010 when Tidy Towns Chairman Joe Troy and Zoe Nelson visited Sonairte Ecology Centre in Co. Meath and under-

Following that event staff from Sonairte visited Balbriggan with their ‘Bat detector’ and identified three types of Bat in various areas of Balbriggan. Sonairte staff also advised the best location for the summer roosting boxes. The team will be erecting the boxes but are going to keep the exact location secret so that these special and endangered species can rest peacefully during the day. Zoe added that, “this is a great boost for the Tidy Towns team who were recently set back by the theft of their equipment. “We said we wouldn’t be beaten and this project is proof Tidy Towns is alive and well and active in Balbriggan,” she concluded.

Swords Dance Crew Go To Championships Dynamic Dance Crew dancers Shane Kierans, Katie O’Neill, Micaela Gorman, Susie Walsh, Megan Rose Reynolds, Jessie Barry, Kayla Flood and Fabia Marsella will soon be packing their bags for Las Vegas after qualifying to represent Ireland in the World Hip Hop Championships. The crew from Kidcast, a dance school in Swords and Drogheda, are currently holding various fundraising events to try and raise money to cover the travelling and accommodation costs, estimated at around €20,000. The group is made up of 15 - 18 year olds and they will compete in the Varsity section of the competition which is run by Hip Hop International. Two other teams have qualified to represent Ireland in the Varsity section, taking place in the last week of July. Last year Ireland placed 3rd in the Junior Division of the World Hip Hop Championships. The dancers thanked Ger O’Neill and James Milligan who gave up their time to help the crew out on the night. We wish the team best of luck in the upcoming competition.

This will involve ground works to develop a newly expanded pitch, and a second pitch in order to ensure the club has enough ground capacity for its own fixtures as well as for international matches and so on. The timing of the work has been established in order to minimise disruption to the 2011 cricket season while also ensuring that it is completed in time for autumn grass growing. Boylesports To Close Skerries Shops Bookmakers, Boylesports, who have branches nationwide, are to attempt to close their two shops in Skerries. However, the good news is that there will be no job losses as a result. The two shops are located on Strand Street and Skerries Point. While company spokesperson, Mark Nunan confirmed to the County Leader that if the stores close, staff in both shops will be relocated to some of their other outlets. The reason given for the proposed closures is due to “unrealistically high rents in times of economic recession.” The shop on Strand Street would seem to be ideally situated on a main thoroughfare, with a high footfall and crucially for a bookies shop, close to a number of pubs, which traditionally provide many customers for these shops. The Skerries Point outlet, however, does not seem to make any sense at all. It is located in a residential area, with no pub in the vicinity and moderate footfall for a specific reason. Further

to this, the placing of two outlets in Skerries is particularly baffling. Locals that this newspaper spoke to questioned whether the company had overstretched itself earlier this year by acquiring the troubled Celtic bookmakers company. The hope is that if the units close, the affected staff can be relocated to one of their nearby facilities and not to some far flung location.

Swords Tidy Town Pushes On By Jennifer McShane Swords Tidy Towns secretary, Des Becton says the committee will keep “pushing on” in anticipation of the Tidy Towns judging in a few weeks time. Speaking to the County Leader, Des says the committee are very disappointed about the lack of effort from the County Council in relation to the Swords Park clean up, which is still in a bad way: “We brought up the state of the Park about three weeks ago and since then, despite some of the litter being cleared, very little effort has been made to really give the park the re-vamp that it needs. It’s these things that will make all the difference in the
judging,” he said. The Swords Tidy Towns committee was resurrected three years ago after Swords was voted one of the dirtiest towns in the city. It looks like all the hard work done with the clean up is paying off as Swords is the only town in the North County to have been nominated in the Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) competition. The fact that Swords has received this nomination shows that the town has come a long way since being branded one of the dirtiest towns. “We’re delighted with the nomination,” says Des. “We came 12th out of 53 towns last year and we hope to do even better this time around.” Speaking about the town’s Tidy Towns hopes, he says that everyone will keep beavering away regardless. “I know we face some tough competition, but we’ll continue to work away so that the town will look it’s absolute best for the judging.”

Trad Music Duo To Play In Rush

Traditional music duo, Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill are to play at the Millbank Theatre in Rush, on June 25th at 8pm, as part of their worldwide tour and new album ‘Welcome Here Again.’ The pair, based in the United States, will play songs from their latest album ‘Welcome Here Again’ in front of what is expected to be a sell-out crowd. The show will be the 15th of a mammoth eighty date tour which will include trips to Ireland, U.K, Sweden, France, Canada, USA and Japan. They’ve also performed live in Beijing, Shanghai, Warsaw and Mexico City. Rush residents will no doubt be delighted to hear of such news with the duo’s celebrity presence in the traditional music scene a dominant force. Hayes’ fiddle playing has been attributed by Q magazine as “sparsely accompanied fiddle music has rarely sounded so complete and so essential.”
Fourth Green Flag For Malahide School St Andrew’s National School in Malahide received their fourth Green Flag from the Green Schools programme recently. The flag was awarded for the travel theme. The teachers and students have been working towards their fourth flag for the last two years, trying to develop a sustainable transport method of travelling to and from school and reducing the amount of students travelling to school by car. Students who lived close to the school were encouraged to walk via a scheme called W.O.W, Walk On Wednesdays. Those who lived too far away from the school to walk instead decided to carpool or cycle. For a school to be awarded a fourth green flag, they have to show they have continued working on the three previous projects. Therefore, the school continues to collect rainwater to use on the school gardens, and have reduced their general waste blue bins from four to two and have nine green recycling bins collected every fortnight. County Mayor, Ken Farrell awarded the flag to the enthusiastic St Andrew’s students.

Ardgillan strongly promotes STEM related subjects and remarkably while only in their second year, the college took yet another top award in
Science. Principal, Michael O Leary congratulated all of the students for their hard work and efforts. The college is honoured that the

School Benefit Night In Skerries By Roxana Neag Parents and teachers travelled back in time and relived the 80's atmosphere recently at the Coast Inn in Skerries, in aid of Holmpatrick National School. The event was organised by the Parent's Association of the school, which is affiliated to the National Parent's Council. There are seven members on its committee who have organised interesting and captivating fundraising events throughout the year. All money raised will be used for providing resources for teaching staff,
subsiding school tours, assisting with sport activities, educational workshops, visits to cultural events and for supporting the school's needs. Everyone dressed in 80's style and all guests enjoyed the brilliant night. “We are working to enhance our children's school experience. We strive to create a more stimulating environment in the play area.“ said the Chairperson, Bernie Sexton, whose nine year old son, Oisin, is currently studying at the school, along with 94 other children.

Swords Youth Service Fundraising Cycle A group of young people selected by Swords Youth Services, recently took part in a cycle with the aim of raising funds for a walk they hope to do. The campaign’s target, which will involve the walk, centres around the raising and promoting of mental health awareness in Swords. The cycle, which was performed on the spot, took place on Saturday June 18th in Airside, Swords. The group took part in their own fundraising cycle the day before.
The group travelled over 100 km with little more than a bike and frame. Each group member will need to raise â‚Ź850 per person to go on the Santiago de Compostela walk of pilgrimage in Spain – the aim of the project. Any excess funds raised will go towards a mental health charity of choice. Speaking to the County Leader, Swords Youth Service worker Melissa Monks said: “The work they’re (the young people) doing is great. It’s brilliant that these young people are getting involved in not only the fundraising but also the promotion and the raising of awareness for mental health in Swords which is vital.â€? The project will also involve the selected group coming up with and developing programmes that will help promote mental health awareness around the area.

According to Principal, Denise Kelly, “the school had what was one of their best years yet, in terms of academic and artistic achievements. The achievements in sport, art projects and academic subjects, are going from strength Pictured here with their teachers are the students who represented St. Finian's Community College in Swords in the Irish Physical Sciences and Irish Chemical Sciences Olympiads earlier this year. Funds Raised For Malahide Sports Over â‚Ź10,000 has been raised so far for sport in Malahide through the Malahide Sports Lotto. This web-based fund-raising initiative was established just six weeks ago in a joint venture between five local sports clubs – rugby, cricket, tennis, GAA and sailing. Already, there have been over 20 cash winners and the Jackpot is now building up to â‚Ź2,600, according to Breda Melvin, one of the Sports Lotto co-ordinators. “While hundreds of sports clubs around the country already run their ‘LocalLotto’, this collaboration is unique in Ireland in that this is the first time a group of clubs in a town have come together for this purpose,â€? she said. This collective initiative is managed by Malahide Rugby Club, Malahide Lawn Tennis Club, St. Sylvesters GAA, Malahide Yacht Club and Malahide Cricket Club, all in Malahide.

Looking out to the front garden, he points to a large stone that looks like granite and reminisces about his mother sitting on it in front of the hall door reading library books in the sunshine. “Back then nobody had the daily paper, that started in the ‘70s and the postman would deliver it to your door.” Barney is obviously extremely proud of his five adult children and is delighted to have his daughters, Philomena and Maria living next door. He relishes bringing Maria’s nine year old son, Adam to Hedgestown School every morning and laughs that he’s greeted at the gates with “Good morning Granda.” To relax, Barney plays traditional Irish music on the accordion. “I go up the road to the ‘Man O’War’ where I can join in the session,” he explains. “Years ago a few of us got together and played all around the North County including ‘The Yacht’ in Loughshinny on Saturday nights. There was another accordion player, a banjo player, fiddle player, mandolin player and a very good flute player,” Barney Barney Greene is pictured beside his vintage 1953 Massey Ferguson tractor. tells me, “and the music man. A Gentle Rub Of The Greene A
s I follow Barney Greene in my car from the old Belfast Road to his house a mile up the road in Rathmooney, Skerries, I think of the annual Tractor Run Barney began in January 2007 to raise funds for St. Francis Hospice, Raheny.
Settled in his neat and tidy home, Barney explains the impetus for this novel event. “I was watching horses and huntsmen from The Naul Harriers going down the road outside my house. As they couldn’t hunt deer or foxes anymore, I asked what was happening and discovered they were holding a ‘dummy run’ for charity.” Barney decided there and then that he would like to raise funds for charity too and a Tractor Run seemed the ideal event. Encouraged and supported by Michael Hoey of Country Crest, he got to work immediately. “We had 130 tractors and raised a penny short of €9,000 that year,” Barney says proudly. This year, even in recessionary times, Barney managed to raise an impressive €7,085 for the Hospice. He was ably assisted by his wife Agatha and many volunteers, whom he consistently credits for the success of the event. “The volunteers play a big part. It costs €20 for the Tractor Run itself but much of the money raised comes from the raffle and auction which the volunteers organise.” The run itself is 32km long and travels through many townlands across the North County, taking about two hours to complete. “Well it’s an hour and a half travel time,” explains Barney, “but we stop in Naul for a half hour along the way. As we hold the run in January you can be cold and stiff sitting on a tractor and you need to stretch your legs and get a glass of stout or cup of tea to revive yourself,” he laughs. Barney’s love of tractors goes back to his childhood but it was the ‘50s before he got the opportunity to

Heffernan fulfil his ambition and be “tractor man” for a local farmer. Having left Hedgestown National School at 13, initially Barney began working on a farm preparing the land for the ploughman. “I worked for a penny a day, but I liked what I was doing. The hours were erratic but we all accepted that.” Small in stature, Barney laughs as he describes the farmer “catching hold of me and putting me under his arm as if I was a little Jack Russell, to cross the muddy gap between fields.” He goes on to explain one of his more gruesome jobs. “Every year, we killed a pig and I was responsible for holding the dish under the pig’s head. The blood was used for pudding and the carcass was salted, put into a sack and hung over the chimney for a year. When it was then sliced up it was gorgeous,” he laughs as he notices my look of horror. Eventually moving on from this job, Barney began working as a horseman at St. Ita’s, Portrane where there was a large farm at the time. He left this in the ‘70s to travel across the country erecting hay barns. “At that time, farmers got a grant of £30 to build a hay shed and I spent 15 years travelling the length and breadth of the country doing this. I never minded the travel at all,” Barney comments. “We stayed in farmhouses if there was room and B & B’s if not. Most places were really good but some were rough enough,” he laughs. When this job finished, Barney moved to the healthcare multi-national company, Technicon in Swords (now Bayer Diagnostics) to work as a maintenance

As residents call for a change of priorities by the council, they say it is particularly galling to think that thousands of euro have been splashed out on a dubious trade mission to China by councillors and council officials, whilst the state of this road, as well as others in the North County remains neglected. Skerries is the tourist capital of this region and has been a regular high achiever in the Tidy Towns competition. It seems a shame that the road which brings the judging panel to this town, will present them with a first impression that may prove costly to the efforts of the hard working committee. Ironically, there is a large speed ramp on this road to slow the traffic down. However, the state of the road has the effect of slowing down the traffic far more effectively than this redundant speed ramp.

Corduff School Dedicates Garden To Former Principal Continued from page 1 Pupils in all class groups have been actively involved in the first stages of developing a vegetable garden and a wild garden. “It has provided hands-on opportunities for the children to learn about local flora and fauna,” says Ms.McKeown. Good News On Ridgewood Pitches Following our story about the pitches in Ridgewood, it appears that there is good news on the horizon. Representation had been made to the Council by councillors, Darragh Butler and Anne Devitt to take the pitches in charge, thus allowing both St Finian’s GAA Club and River Valley Rangers to play there. Butler said, “We are pleased to confirm that Darragh Butler TD the Parks Department of the County Council have met with developers MKN and hope to take the new pitches into their charge as soon as possible so they can be allocated to St. Finian’s GAA and River Valley Rangers F.C. for the summer season. Meetings will continue, and if successful, this would be great news for St. Finian’s who will get to use the full size GAA pitch and for both clubs in making use of the junior pitches earlier than expected. The building / changing room facility would then follow later in the year,” he concluded.

Warmer weather, longer evenings and for those who enjoy a run or a swim, its time to start thinking about the 3D RNLI Aquathlon. For the last two years, this event has been held at Skerries. This year, however, building upon the success of the previous two, and on the demand from athletes not located within easy reach of the venue, 3D in association with the RNLI have organised Aquathlon events at a number of towns around the country. The hope is that each event will raise much needed funds for the RNLI station closest to it. The winners of each event will be invited to take part in the final in Skerries which will take place on Sunday 14th August. As well as the finalists, the Skerries event will be open to anyone who wishes to take part. It is always a great day, so come along, have fun and show your support for the volunteer RNLI Lifeboat crew.

Who has time to swap out every accessory? Certainly not everyone will; so if you’re strategic about things you can revamp a few pieces. Wool throws for brightly coloured cottons; bowls of mossy pinecones for sea shells or river rocks) and kick off the summer season with a freshly accessorised room.
Switch Out Shades You’ll be amazed at the remarkable change replacing existing lampshades will have on a room’s point of view. Out go the richly coloured silk, leather or burlap shades and in come light, white linen or paper shades. I tend to collect interesting finials for lamp tops too. Switching these too can add another layer of seasonal interest, fun and colour.

on Seatown Road in Swords on Wednesday June 8th. Five Prosper athletes were congratulated on achieving the honour of representing Ireland at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens which will begin on Saturday 25th June. Pat Reen, Director of Services at Prosper Fingal paid tribute to the athletes on their amazing journey: “Prosper Fingal are very proud of you, and your families are very proud of you,” he said. Team manager Robbie Corr reminded the athletes that they were representing themselves, the 93 participants who were there from the start, the Prosper service, their families and their communities. He urged them to “enjoy sport for what it is and enjoy the life experience you’ll treasure forever.” Assuring the athletes “I don’t care what you come home with as long as you come home with a smile,” he did threaten to cry if they won a medal! All athletes spoke of their delight, tempered with some nerves, at the exciting adventure they’re about to embark on.
