Locals Dig Deep To Raise Over €100,000

Heroes Homecoming At Dublin Airport

ST. FRANCIS HOSPICE

A local charity fundraising team, which has been in operation for the past seven years, has become a very important source of funding for St Francis Hospice. Originally set up as a local fundraiser for Temple Street Hospital, the charity has made a tremendous difference to it’s beneficiaries. For the past five years, the charity, which was known as Naul Friends of St Francis, has organised a Golf Classic on behalf of the Hospice each year. This year’s event took place on Friday, 10th August last and attracted a great turnout on what was, arguably the best day weatherwise in an utterly miserable summer. One of the organisers, Des Connolly told the County Leader: “To date we have collected €115,000 towards the St Francis Hospice. As usual, we were supported by many local businesses, who in times of recession, dug deep into their pockets to support us. We are thrilled that companies, who have many financial commitments, still support us. To them, we are most grateful,” he said. It was the brainchild of locals, Des Connolly, Peter Mongey and Mary Kiely and this year marked the fifth year of the Annual Fundraiser at Hollywood Lakes Golf Club. The heroic efforts of this trio has ensured that the

lives of people in need of vital care are enhanced. Their hard work and dedication in providing countless hours into securing funds for St Francis Hospice, means that this event has now become a regular feature in the annual calendar of the popular North County course. Members look forward to it every year and they make a valuable contribution to the day. Many of them partake in the event, whilst others gladly give up their golf for the day in support of this cause. Already, over €13,000 has been collected this year through teams, sponsorship and donations. “We are extremely grateful to the management and the entire staff at Hollywood Lakes Golf Club for their on-going support. Our sights are now firmly fixed on 9th August 2013 for our next St Francis Hospice outing,” said Des. The day attracted 40 teams of 4 and the top prize on the day was won by the Fitzpatrick family, led by Fergus Fitzpatrick. They came in with a very impressive 96 points, with the team from the Cock Tavern in Swords narrowly behind in second place. The evening continued with music and dancing and the gathering was greeted by club captain, Mick Brew, who very

generously made a donation in lieu of momentos which would have been given to members on his Captain’s Day. This gesture had the full backing of the membership and displayed the kind of generosity which is evident in this club. A spanking brand new Peugeot 208 was on offer for anyone who had a hole in one at the difficult par 3 17th hole. Nobody claimed this great prize, although, one golfer, Robbie Keogh had a hole in one at the 4th hole, which provided him with a 4 ball at the Island Golf Club. Unfortunately, he didn’t win the big prize. A delighted Ethel McKenna, CEO of St Francis Hospice, in a message to the fundraising team said: “We all had a great night and the support for St. Francis Hospice is fantastic – five years is a major support and everyone I spoke with said “see you next year.” Yourself and The Muslim feast of Eid took place on Sunday last to celebrate the end of Ramadan. It is a feast that is much enjoyed by all, particularly by children, who enjoy presents and being spoiled by their families. We continue to work in partnership with the H.S.E. to open beds in St. Francis Hospice Blanchardstown in Year 2013. Funding is a difficulty, but we have to keep pressing for patient beds to open. We do have waiting lists in Raheny. Many thanks to all Friends of the Naul Golf Classic for their wonderful support of St. Francis Hospice. We face many challenges and are so privileged to have the support of groups like yourselves,” she concluded. See pictures and sponsor list on page 9

ast week proved to be a memorable one for the contestants in the Rose of Tralee festival, when they visited some of the many fine attractions in Fingal. Their first port of call was to Xtreme Adventure grounds in Courtlough, outside Balbriggan. There they experimented with some adventure games, as well as coming up close and personal with some birds of prey (not the local lads I hasten to add). After this, it was time to glam up and attend a Gala event at the Carlton Hotel, Blanchardstown for their final night in the capital, before they headed off to Tralee in search of the

coveted Rose of Tralee crown. Here they mingled with invited guests, before enjoying a sumptuous meal in the beautiful dining room. The girls proved to be excellent ambassadors for their regions, as they proved to be not only radiant, but full of fun and mischief. Show compere, Daithi Ó Sé was among the special guests, and he, no doubt used the occasion to get to know the girls better. It was evident that all hands had a great time. The difficult part now is to pick a winner from this bunch of lovely Roses.

Prepare to be entertained by the much loved and extravagant Ted Crilly who has a habit of getting into awkward situations, the young and dimwitted Dougal McGuire, and the alco-

respite by the S u n f l o w e r Chernobyl Children Dublin Region was a major coup for the group and children. They were let into the secret of the storage of potatoes, and the washing and “buffing” of the beloved spud for packaging and distribution to retailers all over Ireland and to southern Spain. Then the children visited the cauldron of the “crisps factory” where the hairs nets became fashionable and necessary. The children saw the fresh holic swear machine Jack Hackett famously drunk since 1936. Mrs Doyle, the housekeeper, is never far away with her precious teapot and sees it as her sole purpose in life to supply the priests and audience with copious amounts of tea. A Super Summer For Balbriggan Group The Balbriggan Remember Us annual summer programme is sadly at an end for another year, but has been great fun for all involved! The Summer Programme commenced early in July and ran for a six week period. There were over 120 families participating this year and the group were fortunate enough to have great weather for most of the days out. They enjoyed some new experiences, such as Butlers Chocolate Experience, orienteering, creative drama and gymnastics and visited some old favourites such as Causey Farm,

the Crystal Maze, Glendalough, Clara Lara and Buck Mooneys. The summer programme was an opportunity for young people with special needs, their siblings, friends and parents to enjoy the company of others in similar circumstances and with similar experiences. Many parents commented on how they enjoyed the activities and the company of other families and how they didn’t feel as isolated as they may otherwise have felt if they were out without the Remember Us group. Remember Us would like to extend sincere thanks to all who have made this year’s summer programme the success that it has been so far. Last but by no means least, a big thanks to the volunteers who are giving up their time to help during the programme and without whom the various activities and outings would not be possible.

Crafty Times In Balbriggan

WINNER!

By Roxana Neag There’s nothing like a crafts class to keep your child busy on a cloudy summer afternoon. Balbriggan Library recently held a summer crafts class for children aged 8-12 which was packed full of eager participants. Laura Hartney and Ronan O’Malley, two members of the Balbriggan Library’s staff chose a summer theme for their class, which is always popular with the locals. “The interest for the classes organised in Balbriggan

Library is very high. The demand is always greater than the supply and unfortunately we do not always have the capacity to take everyone who applies, but we hold many classes on a regular basis, so that they all have a chance to join in at some stage,” explained Ronan. The arts and crafts classes are organised in Balbriggan Library at the end of each month when invitations are sent out to parents. All events are free of charge. After they finished their insect magnets, children told jokes and had fun together. The organisers promised to have some traditional arts and crafts with crayons at the next class, which children can look forward to.

Lou McGovern, proprietor of Swords Travel is pictured with North County Leader's Gerry Fitzmaurice, as he picks out the winning tickets for the recent Swords Travel competition. The two lucky winners, who will enjoy the fabulous prize of dinner for two, overnight accommodation in Dublin city and tickets for the hit musical, Chicago, were Adrian Doyle and Judith O'Connor, both from Swords.

Portrane Workers Denied Pension Increase Former employees of St Ita’s Hospital Portrane are among nearly 2000 HSE pensioners throughout the country who are still awaiting a pension increase granted to them as far back as 2004. The workers covered by this are nonofficer grade, whose pension entitlements are integrated with their social welfare pensions and include care staff, drivers, porters and general operatives. Speaking to the County Leader, local TD Brendan Ryan (LAB) said: “I have raised this issue on numerous occasions and this is no longer acceptable. I am seeking a guarantee from the Minister that these changes will be implemented by the end of 2012.” “The implementation of the increases could see a relatively modest increase of a weekly pension of anything between €5 and €70 depending on individual cases. Any increase would make a massive difference to their quality of life,” he continued. “During the past seven years, nearly 2,000 of some of the lowest paid workers in the public services have been denied the benefits of an increase which was granted to them by the Government in 2005. This is a scandal that must be rectified immediately.”

You want a dress that is sure to turn heads. There are an array of shops located in the North County with any number of dresses in all shapes and sizes, so you are bound to find the perfect dress. Check out some magazines for current trends and styles if needs be and of course online shops too. Don’t be afraid to get dramatic and go for a style you wouldn’t usually wear. You have the perfect excuse to be extra glamourous for a day.

BEAUTY Here in the North County, there is a vast array of beauty and hair salons for you to choose from to ensure that you will look picture perfect on the night. When making all your essential appointments (hair, nails, make-up, limousine, etc), be sure to make a note of the date and time of your call, and who you spoke to. Make sure you ring to confirm your appointments 2-3 weeks before the night, just to be sure that there are no problems.

TRANSPORT One person should be in charge of the arrangements. There’s a lot to do, so make sure it’s someone who will follow through, make good choices, and not wait until the last minute. There are limousine companies all around the North County for you to choose from and you

can also check the internet. Don’t settle on the first company you call. Prices can vary greatly and you’ll want to get the package that suits your needs. It’s a good idea to reserve your limousine at least four months in advance. The demand can be overwhelming during debs season. Early reservations will guarantee a fair price and the car of your choice.

FLOWERS Girls, don’t keep your date guessing – let him know what you’re wearing on the big night so he can co-ordinate his tux and flowers for a perfect match. Flowers for your mum are a lovely way to thank her for all her helpful advice coming up to your debs. A tip for the guys - bring a

thoughtful bouquet for the mum along with your date’s corsage. To preserve your flowers after the event, spray the flowers with hair spray so that they harden (and have a protective shell) and keep their colour.

PHOTOS Most schools will usually have a debs committee to organise some of the finer details of the debs night, such as photos. Usually this will be included in your overall pricing but should you wish to get your own photos done, you will find plenty of photographers located in the North County. Make sure you get a price list from the school before the night of the debs, so you know how much photos your debs will cost.

The payment rates are €150 in respect of children aged 4 to 11 and €250 for children aged 12 to 22 on 30th September 2012,” he explained. “Over €60 million has been made available by the Government this year for the scheme, which could prove a lifesaver for cashstrapped families,” he added. Love it or hate it, it’s almost time to wave goodbye to the breezy summer holidays and start getting ready for a new school year. Getting the new school year off to a good start can influence your children’s attitude, confidence, and performance both socially and academically. The transition from August to September can be difficult for both children and parents. Even children who are eager to return to class must adjust to the greater levels of activity, structure, and pressures associated with school

life. The degree of adjustment depends on the child, but parents can help their children manage the increased pace of life by planning ahead, being realistic, and maintaining a positive attitude. Here are a few suggestions to help ease the transition and get the school year off to a great start:

Keep Track Of Essential Information Review the material sent by the school as soon as it arrives. These packages

include important information about your child’s teacher, school supply requirements, sign ups for afterschool sports and activities, school calendar dates, bus transportation, health and emergency forms, and volunteering opportunities.

Mark Your Calendar Make a note of important dates, especially back-to-school nights. This is especially important if you have children in more than one school and need to juggle obligations.

Buying School Uniforms

Getting The School Books

Buy only what you have to from the official uniform store. Many schools have an “official” uniform store, but they vary as to how insistent they are that parents shop there. These shops can be very expensive. You can usually get some very reasonable ‘back to school’ clothing offers at shops all around the North County.

Shop around for the best offers before you go out and buy brand new schoolbooks. Remember, they’ll only be used for the year, so be frugal and try to avoid unnecessary spending. Plenty of shops around the North County have schoolbook schemes where you can get books second hand for a fraction of the price and they’ll be in great

Buy School Supplies Early This is almost an exhausting task, trying to buy the 101 school supplies your children need can be daunting enough so try to get the supplies as early as possible to make it as stress free as you can. Try and buy the school bags a week before school starts. Some teachers require specific supplies, so save receipts in case you need to return items later.

Band Night In Aid Of Balbriggan Group

North County Living by Aine Hannah

From Rush With Love Rush Dramatic Society is taking to the boards again this autumn with a production that promises glamour and witty repartee on top of a thoroughly enjoyable night out. The society has decided on Noel Coward’s 'Private Lives', a play about two honeymooning couples whose worst nightmare unfolds in the first act. One of the brides steps out onto the terrace for some fresh air and is horrified to find her ex-husband standing on the balcony next door. Trapped in the same hotel as your ex, when you’re bravely trying out Groucho Marx’s attitude to re-marriage (hope versus experience) is the fertile ground for farce, exquisite needling and the wry observations about love and the human condition you’d expect from Noel Coward. The romantic comedy will be deftly directed by Barry Kavanagh, who Millbank regulars will know as an actor, and is starring Noreen Fynes; Oisín Molloy; Brian Hosford; Stephanie O’Sullivan and Philippa Towers. The County Living caught up with one of the stars for a preview of what theatre goers can expect from one of the highlights of autumn evenings in the north county. Noreen Fynes first got involved with the dramatic society through her involvement with the musical society. “I’ll play the part of Amanda, previously married to the guy next door, played by Oisín. There was a revival of the play on Broadway recently and Kim Catrall played the part.” Over the years Noreen’s been a scouser, a Norn Irish wee girl in need of hormone replacement therapy, gone Pure Mule with a midlands voice and now is taking on the lah-diest, lah-di-dah for the portrayal of Amanda. “I have been in the dramatic society since Streetcar Named Desire, which is about 10 years now. I didn’t leave one society to go to the other as such, and as time has gone on there’s been a good bit of crossover between the two groups,” she says. “Longstanding musical society members have now joined the drama group and vice versa.” She explains that she had just moved to Rush and joined the musical society as a means of meeting people and settling into the town. “My mother was very interested in amateur drama and I grew up with it in the background, I would have helped her learn her lines, and she would have quoted lines of plays to us as we were growing up. “A part in Streetcar came up and as I wasn’t involved in a musical at the time I was thrilled to get involved in a “straight” play. Women on the verge of HRT was my first major part with the dramatic society, people still say it to me ‘I remember you in that’, and that they’d love to see it again.” Apart from it offering her a chance to showcase her ear for accents, she particularly enjoyed playing Vera in that play because: “she’s a lovely strong, caustic character who took no prisoners”, but she admits that there’s a satisfying challenge to all the performances on stage. “I played Rita in Educating Rita, that was only a two-

hander so that was challenging but great fun. Not all of the plays taken on by the Rush Dramatic Society are comedies, it’s a community-based dramatic group that caters to its members’ abilities and audiences’ tastes and expectations. As the society has been in operation since 1927 local audiences know they’re in for a treat from the players’ interaction with the sets and lights, to a bit of craic in the bar during the intermission. Continuing her experience as an actor Noreen recalls some of her roles as an illustration of why the dramatic society is part of the fabric of life in Rush. “Some of the parts can be emotionally draining. “In Frozen I played the mother of an eight-year-old girl, who’d been abducted by a paedophile, and my daughter had been missing for 20 years. It’s an ultimately uplifting play in that it outlines the mother’s journey of setting up a whole support group and the processes she went through to deal with something like that.” She enjoyed playing the lead part in Marina Carr’s Eden: “that was the first time I’d done monologue. It’s very, very scary because you’re on your own, there’s no sets or props to carry the momentum and the performer has to try and paint the pictures for the audience because you’re recounting everything. But by the end of the run I loved doing monologue. It was your spot, you could really lose yourself in it.” As an amateur performer she’s done (and does) her stints in front of house and behind the scenes, either at the ticket desk, the bar or in running up some of the costumes if the productions’ budget doesn’t stretch to hiring them out. “I have done both, I did costumes for the musical society but I’ve mostly assisted with costumes for some plays now and then with the drama group. When I’m not involved in a play there’s usually something that needs doing. There’s only four or five productions in a year, and the rest of the time the theatre’s used for concerts and workshops.” She mentions the workshops for kids in various age groups that are run by members, as well as the workshops done by the actors, directors and other members’ who’ve undergone speciality training and re-training to keep their skills up to almost professional standards. Between the high bar set by both the drama and musical societies, the audiences expect the productions to be top notch. So the workshops are perhaps surprisingly professional. But the heart of her involvement is down to being on stage. “For me it would be performing; I love the whole first few weeks of rehearsing and getting to grips with the character; learning lines can be a bit of a chore, but when you’re out there, every night is a different performance and a different audience; there can be an energy that you can feed off from the audience’s reaction. There’s a great buzz. ” Private lives will start at the Millbank Theatre, Rush on 5th September for four weeks.

“Local audiences know they’re in for a treat from the players’ interaction with the sets and lights, to a bit of craic in the bar during the intermission”

Allotments Planned For Portmarnock The County Council is planning to develop a site for allotments in Wheatfield off the R124 road (Drumnigh Road) on the back road between Malahide and Portmarnock. It is intended to develop land immediately north of the private driveway to McDowells. The plans were delayed in the immediate aftermath of the flooding in The Grange last October. Most of the flood relief measures have since been carried out. However, one of the recommendations in the consultant's report is to

construct an attenuation area on Council owned lands in Wheatfield. Local Labour councillor, Peter Coyle told the County Leader: This will be a banked area which will attenuate excessive flood waters in any future major

flood ‘event’. The site of this attenuation is on some of the lands originally designated for allotments. Official plans are being drawn up for these lands at present and these allow for the attenuation area. The Council states that it

Balbriggan Council Launches On-line Archive As part of Heritage Week 2012, Balbriggan Town Council is launching the archived minutes of all official meetings since 1860. Balbriggan started out being represented by Town Commissioners and developed into Balbriggan Town Council when Local Government legislation changed.

Aaron Connolly, 13, from Rush, recently won a knockout trip of a lifetime, having been chosen as one of the two winners of the McDonald’s Champions of Play competition for the Olympic Games in London. Aaron travelled to the global sporting extravaganza for four days and was there to cheer on members of the Irish Olympic team, including medallist boxers Katie Taylor, John-Joe Nevin, Paddy Barnes and Michael Conlon. He also had the chance to explore the Olympic Village on a guided tour with other competition winners. Aaron is pictured here with fellow winner, Ellie Holohan from Kilkenny.

It was decided to make all minutes of the Town Commissioners meetings public in an effort to bring awareness of the rich history that Balbriggan has been immersed in since the inception of the town as a l o c a l authority in its own right. As part of National Heritage Week celebrations, the minutes of the meetings of Balbriggan Town Council dating back to the establishment of Balbriggan Town Commissioners in June 1860 have been scanned and will be available online for people interested in finding out more about Balbriggan heritage.

HOROSCOPES AQUARIUS

Jan 20 - Feb 18

For some time you’ve been juggling obligations involving everything from career and family to long-term security. As the week begins, sudden shifts in circumstances take over, and force an extensive review - for the better.

PISCES

Feb 19 - Mar 20

You begin the week thinking that you’ve once again been cornered into a situation in which you just don’t want to be. But events mark a turning point for everyone - even changes in circumstances for some.

ARIES

Mar 21 - Apr 20

If this unsettling week is too draining, reflect on times in the past when you’ve felt similarly stressed. While you knew changes were inevitable, you were still rattled. But you thrived, and you will this time, too.

TAURUS

Apr 21 - May 20

While you can’t stop thinking this week, try to suspend making judgements until after Wednesday - and use the time to explore all options. Others may complain, but now is the time to think of yourself first.

Gemini

May 21 - Jun 20

You have high standards and, if you feel that you’ve fallen short in any area, you can be hard on yourself. However, this is a week to turn aside all self-doubts and wallow in the overwhelming ideas or offers which come.

Cancer

Jun 21 - Jul 22

By now you’ve become accustomed to making decisions, only to have them swept aside by sudden changes in circumstances or others’ whims. You can now begin to relax, for all this is about to change for the better.

Leo

Jul 23 - Aug 23

Tantalising good ideas or offers are still in the air, but you’re beginning to get nervous. You’d like to know where others stand and to have things settled. Don’t hurry this process too much for now, however.

Virgo

Aug 24 - Sep 22

Having been overwhelmed by offers that are wonderful as they are disruptive, you’re longing for a chance to put things in order. This week you get it - although not right away, and a liitle patience will be needed.

Libra

Sep 23 - Oct 22

During this exciting period, doors have been opening to new ideas and activities. Now, in fact, you’re confused by your options and are wondering what to do. The time has now arrived to make these decisions.

Scorpio

Oct 23 - Nov 22

You’ve been complaining because those closest - at home or at work - have been avoiding both discussing and making crucial decisions. Now you get what you want, except it could be more than you bargained for.

Sagittarius

Nov 23 - Dec 21

You’re in an extraordinary position: while you benefit from thrilling developments, you are not in control of decisions. The obvious solution would be to discuss issues - even if you fear what you might hear.

Capricorn

Dec 22 - Jan 19

Since it’s impossible to avoid the tensions that accompany this week’s tricky planetary activity, your best strategy is to withdraw until things blow over. This will not only avoid blow-ups, but also give time for reflection.

Proposed New Retail Centre For Rush Rushbury Properties Ltd have submitted an application to the County Council for planning permission to develop a new retail centre along the Main Street in Rush. Speaking to the County Leader, newly-elected chairperson of Rush Chamber of Commerce, Mairead Sweetman told the County Leader that she believed this to be long over due for Rush and that exciting times lay ahead for the town. “I think all in all this is such a positive development for the people of Rush.” She went on to say that while not everyone will be pleased with the potential development and some objection is to be expected, she feels that the benefits far outweight the negatives in this case: “The main street in Rush

A key feature of the proposed development is the existing thatched cottage along the Main Street. It is to be retained as a centre piece to the development. Before the arrival of Tesco last year, the lack of trolley shopping and car parking facilities in the town has meant that the residents of Rush had to drive to Swords and Balbriggan to do their weekly shopping. This leakage on a weekly basis has had a detrimental effect on the main street with many businesses struggling to survive the economic downturn. “This will be excellent for our local businesses, particurarly those who may be struggling at this time and the prospect of new jobs means exciting times lie ahead for us,” she concluded.

Dublin Airport recently won a prize at the annual Airport Food and Beverage (FAB) Awards in Amsterdam, for having the world’s best airport bars and restaurants at an airport handling 10-25 million passengers per year. It won the award for the quality of the food and beverage outlets in its Terminal 2 (T2) facility. “This award is a major achievement for Dublin Airport and for the concessionaires who operate the restaurants and bars at the airport,” said Paul Neeson Retail Director (DAA), We have been working with our concessionaires to refine and improve the choice and value available to passengers in Terminal 2, and the many of the outlets in Terminal 1 are currently being upgraded to match the high standards that have been achieved in T2,” he added. The Slaney Bar was nominated in the Best Airport Bar category, the Chocolate Lounge was nominated for the Best Non-Alcoholic Airport Outlet award, and Harvest Market was shortlisted for Best Airport Self Service Restaurant. The awards were organised by The Moodie Report, which is a leading international travel retail magazine and website.
