It will also involve the demolition of four existing dwellings at Bridge Street and the provision of a revised junction layout at Bridge Street/Church Road and all associated drainage and ancillary works. Fran Whelan from the Ardrium Partnership said, “This will be a unique development and the first of its kind in the country with all the facilities housed within the one complex. When completed, it will create 180 new jobs with nearly 200 jobs created during the construction phase.” Fingal Dublin Chamber is particularly delighted with this type of development which will be a

The iconic cast iron footbridge at Donabate Railway station will soon be a thing of the past, as far as the station is concerned. As part of the station’s redevelopment, the bridge is to be removed to accommodate a bridge which
By Patrick Finnegan will provide greater accessibility. The old bridge will be dismantled and sent to Kilrush, Co Clare to be part of the West Clare Railway, where old steam trains and railway memorabilia and old equipment are preserved. This may well be Kilrush’s gain, but is certainly Donabate’s loss according to angry local resident, Caoimhghin O’Croidheain. He contacted the County Leader to express his anger and disappointment. He said, “I believe that removing the old bridge will destroy the Victorian character of the station and I cannot see any reason to deny the co-existence of the two bridges. In other towns, heritage artefacts and buildings are proudly preserved and add character to local villages (which the state loves to use to promote tourism) so I cannot understand how this bridge in Donabate is not considered in the same way. In reference to an article published in the County Leader last week, he said, “In Malahide recently, Senator Brendan Ryan made representations to the Council to have the Casino protected, following complaints from local residents which resulted in the County Manager approving the initiation of prosecution, under the Planning Acts, against the owner. Why such disparate policies for different towns? Or will the locals have to complain to change this decision too?” he concluded.

Protection Of Free Pre-School Year Welcomed Deputy Michael Kennedy (FF), has welcomed the Government’s commitment to protect in full, the free pre-school year with funding of €326 million in 2011. He said, “This is an extremely important development as it reflects the aim of protecting to the greatest possible extent, the level of service currently provided for children and young people next year. Around 65,000 children will be able to avail of pre-school care and education each year. I know there are many children here in my own constituency who are benefiting from this initiative and it is proving to be very successful. Children are eligible for the scheme when
they are aged between 3 years 3 months and 4 years 6 months on 1st September of the relevant year.” He continued, “There have been really difficult choices to make in the Budget for next year. The introduction of the free pre-school year was very positive and it is providing a great start for young children as they prepare for their school years. I am proud to support this initiative and I also want to thank the Minister for Children Barry Andrews who has confirmed that capital funding of €10 million has also been allocated next year to complete capital grant commitments,” he concluded.

Christmas Day Swim For Charity In Portmarnock The Jesson family from Onward Walk in Portmarnock are great supporters of St. Francis Hospice. Each year they organise a Christmas Day swim at Portmarnock beach for the charity. This relationship developed when their father, Billy died from a rare brain tumour in 2002. The family felt that their father should be remembered in a special way at Christmas time each year. St Francis Hospice in Raheny gave Billy all the care he needed and the family decided that they would be the beneficiaries of any fundraising efforts. The first Billy Jesson Christmas Day Swim took place in 2002 and has continued every year since and is gaining momentum. An impressive €60,000 has been collected for the Hospice over the years. allow electronic annual returns to be filed online. O’Brien is urging North County companies to consider filing their returns electronically. “In these difficult times companies are often looking at ways of making savings and the new measures that will allow companies to make electronic annual returns should help achieve that goal. All a company will have to do is prepare a PDF set of accounts which can now be appended in a way that is as simple as adding an attachment to an email. It completely

The selection of Councillor Tom Kelleher to contest the General Election on behalf of the Labour Party in the Dublin North constituency has been given a broad welcome. Kelleher has been added to the Labour ticket to run with colleague, Senator Brendan Ryan. Tom Kelleher is a very well known public representative, having represented his community since 1991 as a councillor, initially on Dublin City Council, and more recently on the local County Council. He also served as County Mayor in 1996. To date his successes include playing a role in the Labour Group changing the nature of Planning and Development in the region since 2003. Transparency and Public Involvement is now the accepted way of working. Early childhood education provided by the State is now Labour Party policy and he has promoted and lobbied for this at Conference for twenty years. He Cllr. Tom Kelleher is currently principal of Rolestown National School. He told the County Leader about his hopes and aspirations for the North County, particularly in regard to the Metro North project, “I’m absolutely committed to the Metro project and have worked so hard on this project with the County Council. The Metro has huge advantages in terms of transport, creating jobs and economically to the North County. There are thousands of reasons I’m
behind this project and it will not only provide the North County with a great transport system but create many jobs too.” He went on to say, “Labour have become a strong party and are proud of the fundamental differences they have made to how the Council works. The needs of residents and businesses are very important and also the people who create jobs in the area. I feel very responsible for the young people as well as everybody else and Labour’s policy is to deliver the best of life for the people we serve.” As a teacher, it came as no surprise that education was high on the agenda for him. “Education is a primary focus means for young people and I believe it should be free. Finance should not stop young people having access to third level education. Ireland is an island and we need to educate our people from a young age, in order to be able to compete for huge resources. Every child should have the best possible education,” he concluded. Cllr. Ciaran Byrne has welcomed Kelleher’s selection. He told the County Leader, “There was a unanimous decision by members of Labour’s Dublin North constituency organisation to add a second candidate, following the selection of Senator Brendan Ryan at the convention in the Bracken Court Hotel in Balbriggan last week. The party’s organisation committee agreed to add councillor Tom Kelleher, who polled well in the vote on the previous Sunday. So the outcome has reflected the democratic wishes of the party members.” Byrne had argued strongly for the selection of a second Labour candidate during the debate, citing missed opportunities in the past when the party had fielded only a single candidate. “While everyone knows that a week is a long time in politics, the opinion polls consistently support the view that Labour has a very real chance of taking two seats in Dail Eireann in the Spring. I fully expect Fianna Fail to lose its two seats in the constituency, as both TDs have fully supported Brian Cowen’s disastrous economic policies during his terms as Minister of Finance and Taoiseach,” concluded Byrne.

He continued, “The Government is implementing a tough budgetary strategy that is asking a lot of our people at this difficult time and there's simply no way we can ask ordinary people on middle incomes to accept this strategy while senior staff in banks cash-in. Sargent Introduces ‘Economic Treason’ Bill The Green Party has introduced a Bill, which seeks to amend the definition of treason in the Constitution to include economic treason. Deputy Trevor Sargent moved the legislation in the Dáil recently, said, “The Green Party believes an

What a super gift to give someone this Christmas - truly a life changing gift. Each gift comes with a card for your friend or family member describing the gift you’ve chosen and how it will be used. Swords School Has WOW Factor By Leslie Murphy A week-long sustainable travel campaign was held in November and December at St. Colmcille’s Girls’ National School, Swords. A big effort has been made by pupils and staff to achieve their forth green flag for the theme of sustainable travel from An Taisce. Talks, assemblies and workshops were ongoing over the last few weeks. The focus was on emphasising the importance of alternatives to the use of the private car on the school run. Each Wednesday the school promotes ‘WOW’ day. The main aim of the Green Schools’ Travel Programme is for students, parents and teachers to walk, cycle, ‘park and stride’ and car pool, rather than using private car on the school run. Ms.O’Connell (Green School Co-ordinator), told the County Leader, “I would like to thank all the girls for their enthusiasm and commitment in the effort to win a fourth flag. Despite all the snow and bad weather we had a great result. The girls were saying ‘park and slide’ as oppose to ‘park and stride’.” This is a great way to promote health and fitness in the school and to reduce the carbon footprint. The school has earned three green flags for work on litter and waste, energy conservation and water conservation. Hopefully they have done enough good work and get the result they deserve.

Here Come The Girls In Malahide Malahide lady, Ann Mulhair has raised an amazing €9,126 for the Alzheimer’s Association of Ireland. Ann organised an event for women only called, ‘Girls Night Out’ recently in Malahide. There was a total of 150 women in attendance, all showing huge support for the cause, Ann’s daughter, Aoife told the County Leader, “We raised this amount through generous donations from the people who came to support us on the night and local businesses that kindly donated raffle prizes on the night.
By Leslie Murphy Dave McKernan from Java Republic was MC for the night and provided goody bags for everyone. He also organised some of the most sought-after auction prizes, such as dinner for eight in the famous Chapter One restaurant, and for a private chef from Malahide’s Kajal Restaurant to cook for six people in the comfort of their own home, showcasing the finest fashion for the coming season. The night proved to be a huge success. Ann set up the event and hopes to make it an annual one. Last year was the first
year she undertook to organise the event and it proved to be a great success. Ann managed to raise €6,500 which provided a mini bus to take Alzheimer’s patients to the day care facility in Raheny. The

Alzheimer Society of Ireland is the leading dementia specific

Deputy Darragh O’Brien (FF) has told the chief executive of the HSE that the Dublin Fire Brigade Ambulance Service in Swords can and must be retained for the safety of the growing population. He said, “Senior officials from the HSE, including its chief executive officer, Cathal Magee, attended a meeting of the Public Accounts Committee. I took the opportunity to raise the important issue of the retention of the fire brigade ambulance service in Swords. I have been heavily involved in the campaign to have this very important service protected for the residents of the area, which as we all know is growing in population. I expressed to Mr. Magee my concerns about the service and the need for the HSE to prioritise frontline services. I am very firmly of the view that the HSE has the funding to secure this service and it should be retained.” He went on to say, “Following my contribution, Mr. Magee gave me his assurance that he would look into this matter and come back to me on the issue shortly. In my view this issue can be resolved between the HSE and Dublin City Council if there is the will there to reach an agreement. I have given a commitment to my constituents to work as hard as I can to ensure this service is retained for the community and I am determined to continue to do that. On average this crucial service responds to 4,500 calls per year in Swords, Malahide and surrounding areas. I have received many representations from constituents on this issue and I have also met the crew in the fire station on a number of occasions and remain in contact with them on a regular basis.” He concluded by saying, “This service is important for people of Swords, Malahide and surrounding communities. I think it was important to raise it directly with the chief executive of the HSE and I look forward to hearing from Mr. Magee very shortly.”

Breakdown of distribution and sales figures of Local newspapers in North County Dublin Gerry McInerney, managing partner at McInerney Saunders, just returned from India, attended a lunch held by the Ireland India Business Association. The Indian ambassador was the guest of honour. McInerney mentioned that his firm is actively involved in providing practical and professional assistance to foreign inward investors from India and elsewhere when setting up business in Ireland. The company has close relationships with firms throughout the world and actively promotes Ireland as a base for businesses seeking to avail of Ireland's skilled, industrious and entrepreneurial workforce. Gerry McInerney welcomed the government's recent decision, announced in the budget, to lower the rate of airport charges as a means of attracting greater leisure tourism to Ireland. Gerry McInerney had argued for this at a recent conference focussed upon the golf industry in Ireland. Pictured at the lunch are His Excellency, the Indian Ambassador to Ireland Mr. P.S. The kids also performed a micro pantomime which featured typing cows and ducks demanding electric blankets as they got the better of the farmer by going on strike. It was inventive and entertaining stuff and produced a good few giggles, as the kids then finished with a few Christmas songs.

Balbriggan Youth Services held a special Christmas Recognition awards night on Thursday night last, 16th December. Music, drama, dance, video and rap were all on the menu as the Balbriggan Youth Service showcased a busy 2010. The service, run by Foroige, keeps children and teenagers from 10 years old upwards busy a few evenings a week and organises healthy activities for the them. This year has seen the kids do some fairly diverse stuff, ranging from painting a brilliant mural on the back of the town’s Boxing Club, to making their own short movies or to winning their Gaisce awards by completing the arduous 26 mile trot round the Wicklow mountains. The service has been run in conjunction with Foroige for the last two years and helps youngsters to play an active and creative part in their own development and helps them to contribute to society. The awards on the night saw several youngsters recognised, some for making movies, others for their participation in community projects
Lusk Schoolchildren Take To The Ice By David Laird It was all pencils down and school out for the day, as Mr. Hickey’s 5th class from Lusk National School took to the ice at the O2 Arena, Dublin. Following their educational history visit to the National Museum in Collins Barracks for their Christmas outing, a coach loaded with school boys and girls left Lusk and exchanged their copybooks for ice skates. Slips, bumps
and falls as 33 school children tried their best to stay standing. By the end of the day, all the kids managed to whiz around the rink like professional ice skaters and there was no stopping them. Even their teacher, Mr. Hickey, didn’t manage to stay dry himself, as he took a tumble to the ground, “I’m getting too old for this,” he said as he got back up on his feet after being knocked over by one of his pupils - not naming anyone. Laughs and screams were all you could hear around the 02 Arena as this Lusk class conquered the ice rink.

We’ve only just launched our course and classes are already fully booked in many of our venues. We’re trying to secure more time slots to cope with the demand. So many people know us from our Salsa Slims course that they know what to expect from Stepping Out. But for those who don’t know us, we’ve introduced a RiskFree Guarantee. North County Leader’s Weekly Helpful Guide For Jobseekers
So what is your New Year’s resolution? Writes Siobhán Kinsella This time of year amid the madness of preparing for Christmas it is difficult to focus on finding a role. You will have noticed that there is huge demand for temporary retail, distribution and manufacturing roles. The third quarter is particularly busy for this sector. In Fingal, we are particularly lucky that we have a concentration of retail distribution and manufacturing companies with this demand. January and September are traditionally the most active months for Recruitment. Considering the period of uncertainty the last month has brought this should be the case more so this January. Spend in most sectors of the economy goes up in the last
quarter of the year, that money has to be collected! If you are experienced in credit control, make sure you have chosen your agencies or have updated the automatic alert functions on the job boards to notify you daily of new vacancies. Most companies now run on a January – December financial year meaning that any increased activity should lead to revised budgets for the New Year. This should, in theory lead to additional vacancies. Check out the job boards as a barometer of this, recruitment companies only hire staff when business is good – there are a substantial number of vacancies in recruitment at present. We are repeatedly told domestic demand is weak, so look to food production or distribution companies, demand here is definite and consistent. We have also seen that our exports are strong but service demand is weak. When researching your target companies, look to their target market! Is it targets to the domestic service market or internationally traded services. If the market is international it may offer you more stability – if the
commentators are right! The most important point I would like to make is: business is happening in Fingal. People are finding jobs and people are opening new businesses. Enjoy your Christmas and look to the New Year with a positive attitude. We have all survived the last year and the New Year will bring new opportunities. Siobhan Kinsella is Manager of CPL and Flexsource Solutions with responsibility for the Fingal area. She is a Director of Fingal Dublin Chamber of Commerce & Drinan Enterprise centre. Siobhan is also an active member of the Rotary Club of Dublin Fingal

There is nothing better than a relaxing bath to soothe away all the hard work you have put in to making sure your Christmas has gone according to plan. Plan your bath and love it. Place candles in the bathroom and add a few drops of oil to the water in order to give off a nice aroma that
will travel around the home. Keep your room warm to ensure you have great sleeps by ensuring your curtains and blinds are all closed to keep in the heat. A freshly made bed is like jumping into a field of cotton wool and can make for a really nice sleep. The smell of freshly baked bread or cakes can lift the mood of any home.
same goes for any electrical items. If you use candles instead of light bulbs for a few hours you can create a really festive atmosphere and cut your energy usage.
If you use candles in your home at Christmas that’s great, but make sure you don’t use paraffin candles as they are made from petroleum residues which aren’t good for the environment. Instead, buy vegetable based candles which are all round much lovelier. On the recycling theme, use recycled or natural decorations. If you have children, then it can be great fun to get them to help make decorations for the house and tree that you will treasure for years to come. You can also now buy many charming fair trade products to decorate your home. Another lovely way to give off an ambience is to bake. Some of us would rather buy a cake or bread but it’s simple to bake and it gives such a homely feeling to your home.

Councillor Alan Farrell (FG), and his wife Emma Doyle are inviting people to take part in the 4th Annual Goal Mile at Malahide Castle on Christmas Day at 11 am. Alan and Emma have raised almost €15,000 since they set it up in Malahide in 2007 and are hoping to raise more for Goal. Alan told the County Leader, “ People have been extraordinarily generous with their time and money. Myself and Emma used to do the Goal Mile in Raheny and decided to set it up here in Malahide. The Council have been kind enough to allow us the use of the park on Christmas day”. Last Christmas day 220 people attended in Malahide and the couple are hopeful the numbers will be as great this year.

That’s right, Elvis shall be in the building of the Blue Bar, Skerries this December 28th. Local man, Dave Power and his daughter Joanne will be heading off to South Africa, to assist in a project that educates 800 local children in one of the local schools. Friends in Ireland was founded by Marian Finucane and John Clarke in June 2002. It was born out of a visit to South Africa in mid 2002 where they saw, at first hand, the dire circumstances of orphaned and vulnerable children who have been infected and affected by HIV AIDS. Friends in Ireland now works in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu Natal provinces of South Africa assisting communities care and support Orphans and Vulnerable Children through CommunityDevelopment structures. Together they are working to improve the wellbeing and health status of HIV AIDS affected children. The charity provides hospice care for sufferers and gives young people a life changing experience. Joanne is one of a group of transition year students helping out with the team of medics, tradesmen and other volunteers to build creches and feeding clinics in the devastated region. Currently the school has no washing or sanitary facilities. The clinics provide daily meals for the children before and after school to make sure they are nourished. This is Dave’s fifth time to head of to South Africa in order to help the charity out and the charity night is set to be a great way to raising much needed funds that will all go to helping these unfortunate children.
