Most locals will have been surprised to know that the National Museum had an Archive section in Swords. For security reasons, the museum did not want this information to be in the public domain. Another burning question that people will have is why there was only one security guard to mind such a precious hoard. Ironically, the rhino horns were located in Swords in an effort to prevent them from being stolen. They were taken out of public display more than a year ago and put into storage after a spate of similar thefts from museums across Europe. Keeper with the National Museum, Nigel Monaghan, spoke to the County Leader and called the unfortunate incident a “fatal irony” and said that “the horns,

Residents of Balbriggan are unhappy that the site of an illegal bonfire and riot that took place last Halloween night, is still unsecured months later. The local residents said the site remained an eyesore for weeks after the incident, when broken glass, beer cans, ash and partly burnt pallets had been left on the site after the huge bonfire. After some complaints from residents, the site was eventually cleared by the land owner, but they are worried that a similar

attack could happen at any time, with the site left out in the open. Local resident and Balbriggan Tidy Towns member, Alex McCullagh spoke to the County L eader about the issue: “The local residents are very worried that the site has been left unsecured. It was cleared in January this year and we’re now towards the end of April and the situation remains the same. We’re particularly worried about this in the run up to Halloween as we certainly don’t want the same thing to happen a second time. It would be very distressing to residents. We would like to see steps taken to secure the site, to ensure this won’t happen again.”

There are two RNLI lifeboat stations in the North County, based at Skerries and Howth and both are joining in with the Mayday appeal that is once again sponsored by John West this year. The yellow welly is an essential piece of the RNLI volunteer lifeboat crew member’s kit. A group of North County ladies from a local slimming club recently undertook a six week weight loss challenge in aid of two very worthy charities, namely the Jack and Jill Foundation and the Fr Peter McVerry Trust. The group, which consisted of 52 ladies, all from Swords and surrounding areas, meet every Tuesday evening at Kettles Hotel in Rolestown. They lost over 21 stone in six weeks. The group supports each other to lose weight and, through this co-operation, the group were able to raise funds for the charities. They are an amazing bunch of members who have done lots over the last six weeks to raise money for these charity’s. A consultant from the club told the County Leader how proud she is of all her members and their achievements. “I’m delighted with the efforts of the ladies, who really took to the task with gusto. They did so with a cheerful disposition and we now look forward to collecting the funds for the charities,” she said.

On Saturday, 13th April last, members of the River Valley Rathingle Residents Association, Swords Tidy Towns, 171st River Valley Scouts and many more turned out for the Litter Picking Day, as part of National Spring Clean month. Skerries Resident Appointed Girl Guides Chief A Skerries resident has taken on the role of Chief Commissioner of the Irish Girl Guides (IGG). Helen Concannon, who has been a leader in her local Guide unit in River Valley, Swords, since she moved to the area 12 years ago, was officially appointed at IGG’s Council Meeting, which took place recently. Helen, a native of Galway, first became a Brownie at the age of eight. A number of overseas trips she made in her teens whetted her appetite for international Guiding and she has since represented IGG at events in over 10 countries, including New Zealand, Belarus and Cyprus. She has made five trips to the Republic of Georgia, where she helped get Guiding off the ground and worked with refugees. This work earned her several accolades, including a Civic Merit Award from President McAleese in 2006. She has also led IGG service project teams in several countries and spent a year working as Assistant Programme Manager in India. During her acceptance speech, she told IGG Council members that, as a young woman, she had dreamed of changing the world and that, now in her mid-thirties, she still held onto that idealism. “We can change our world, and our world can be our local community or a wider

forum, she said. “We can give our girls confidence to create that change, however small or big those changes are. She paid tribute to the “extraordinary Guiding leaders who had helped shape her life. “It is from them that I gained the confidence and sense of possibility that sustained me, she said. “They allowed me to believe we could –

Rush Resident Furious Over Library Cutbacks By Jennifer McShane A local resident has lashed out at the County Council’s decision to cut the opening hours of Rush Library. The Council recently announced that they would be slashing the opening hours of both Rush and Balbriggan libraries by up to 50 per cent, sparking public outrage from both communities. Residents have come out in droves to protest at recent meetings in Rush and Balbriggan, organised by Balbriggan Green Party representative, Joe O’Brien and say that they will not meekly stand by and allow these cuts to go ahead. One such resident is Anne McCormack, who has been living in Rush for the past 12 years. She told the County Leader

that the cuts will not only affect her three young children who greatly benefit from the library facilities, but the entire community in general. “Rush is being unfairly targeted,” she said angrily. “We were waiting so long to even get the library, and now we’re told that we’ll barely be able to use the thing. It just isn’t right and residents here won’t just stand by and allow this to happen. The meeting that Joe O’Brien organised was fantastic, we need to see all the local representatives and councillors keep coming together to take a stand against this. ” She says the Council are not taking into account the serious impact these cuts will have on both the young and elderly

Great Investment For Loughshinny Harbour The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has granted funding to the County Council for works at Loughshinny Harbour, according to local TD Alan Farrell (FG). He told the County Leader: “A total of €50,000 will be invested in the improvement of Loughshinny Harbour this year. The bulk of

this funding will come from government at a total of €37,500. The remainder will be funded by the County Council.” According to Farrell, the grant was sought by the County Council in order to resurface the pier at Loughshinny, to remove stepped access and to upgrade recessed ladder

access. The works, when completed, will improve the appearance and safety of the harbour, and are part of government’s Fishery Harbour and Coastal Development Programme. “This is part of the programme where certain shovel ready projects were selected for works in order to create local employment, while also benefiting the area,” Farrell continued. “Seaside communities such as Loughshinny

It’s a fantastic environment for them to be in, and often it is the main outlet the children have, as there are so few facilities here as it is. And the elderly in the community get so much use out of it as well.” Anne has three young children currently attending primary school in the town and she says they adore spending time in the library and find it essential for their school work. “My kids love the library and it’s just as important to them now as it will be for studies as they are growing up. We go there directly from school and should these cutbacks go forward, we’ll no longer be able to do that.” “It will be such a shame to see this beautiful facility we have go to waste, but we’re not going to simply stand back and do nothing,” she concluded.

Brackenstown Centre Malahide Tidy Still A Priority Towns Mean Renewed calls to have a community centre facility delivered to the people in the Brackenstown area of Swords have gone unanswered once again, with the Council highlighting the major obstacle of funding as the primary reason for its failure. Local Councillor Darragh Butler (FF), has been attempting to re-invigorate the failed 2009 proposal over Cllr. Butler the past few months, following the opening of a similar project, the Applewood Community Centre and is keen to let residents know that the centre is still a priority. He told the County Leader: “A community centre is badly needed in Brackenstown, there’s really nothing to do for the young people in the area, so a centre is vital. I just want to let residents know that it’s at the top of the list for myself and the other Swords representatives.” According to the Council, the provision of a community centre for the Brackenstown area also remains a priority project of the Community, Culture and Sports Division despite the lack of funds. The centre was initially to be funded through the Council’s development levies scheme, a product of the Celtic Tiger construction era. However, since the collapse of the property market, this scheme has become unavailable with proposed projects, such as the Brackenstown Community Centre therefore missing out. “The local community have been lobbying for this project to be completed for years, and what I want to see done is the plans being developed as much as possible, so that when the funds finally become available, we can start it up right away,” Butler continued. “Myself and the residents of the area are anxious to see the project go ahead and I’ll be continuing to persue this issue with the council for as long as it takes.”

Business This year’s Malahide Tidy Towns AGM, which was held in the Grand Hotel recently, outlined a promising proposal for improvement in their upcoming strategy. A good crowd attended the meeting, eager to hear details of the plans for the upcoming Tidy Towns season. The Malahide Tidy Towns group always do exceptionally well in the competition and will no doubt continue that trend this year. Secretary, Heidi

even the parking situation is much better. With the recent expansion of the town, amenities and choice for shoppers has increased greatly and for many, there is no need to go to the larger centres anymore to purchase items that were once out of the reach of residents of Rush. Rush might be small, but it has a great variety of places to eat and drink. As in all quaint locations, you will find many interesting restaurants and atmospheric pubs, where friendly locals are only too willing to engage in conversation. After a visit to the town’s shops and after picking up that surprise bargain, you can take the weight off your feet in one of the town’s fine coffee shops and just watch the world pass by. Here you can avail of top class fashion and shoe shops, with something different around every corner. Rush has always been a place of interest to tourists and visitors can take a very pleasant walk down to the quint little harbour, which is much admired by so many. The view from here over the sea is truly beautiful. The town has always been a centre for culture and the arts and, in the Millbank Theatre, it has one of the most progressive theatres in the land. plays and dramas. And the Musical Society here is respected far and wide for their annual productions. After the past cold spring, the local Tidy Towns committee will soon commence work to make the town as beautiful as possible. After great success in last year’s Tidy Towns contest, we’ve no doubt the town will do just as well this year. The town of Lusk is about three miles from Rush and is smaller than it’s neighbour. It has a traditional feeling that makes for a truly wonderful atmosphere around the town. Lusk, though formally a village, is now categorised as a town, due its its recent increase in population. There is a perfect balance of both historical and modern amenities in the town. Visitors will be instantly aware that the town

does not have an urban feel, but instead has that traditional feel. This will be evident as you stroll around this lovely town, looking to find different goodies in the variety of shops they have. You are very likely to be served by the

locals and traders will be sure to make your shopping experience one to remember and you can take your pick from the mix of modern and traditional shops, which will display all sorts products that may take your fancy.

Similarly, shops in Lusk can provide many services to locals and visitors alike, from alterations to beauty treatments. It’s the perfect place to get away from the busy shopping areas and is well known for attracting tourists. You can find special things here and they also have shops specialising in jewellery and keepsake items. The town has grown remarkably in the last few years, with the inclusion of many quality housing estates and the development of some top quality shops. Lusk is very much a heritage town, with many historical sights to see. One such sight is The Round Tower, which was built by 9th century Christians in an attempt to foil the Vikings. As an interesting aside, the

world-famous Black Raven Pipe Band was formed in 1910 and is still as strong as ever. Lusk residents take pride in their town, each year they continue to excel in the Tidy Towns competition and strive to keep this tradition up year after year. They

recently launched their Tidy Towns activities for the upcoming competition, and we’ve no doubt that they’ll do extremely well again this year. Whatever you’re looking for, Rush and Lusk will have something to suit everyone.

Some Key Local Property Tax Information

North County Living by Jennifer McShane

The following are some key points in relation to the local property tax (LPT) that may be helpful in completing your Property Tax returns. Firstly, this is a self-assessed tax, which means that you assess the value of your property having regard to the guidance available, your knowledge of the property and the local area. Useful sources to help you assess the market value of your property are set out in the Guide being delivered to liable persons. The valuation of residential properties is generally done through direct comparison, i.e. if an identical house on the same road recently sold for €300,000 then the value of the house being valued will most likely be €300,000. Revenue is asking property owners to engage reasonably and honestly with the process, and their self assessment will be accepted. The band system means you don’t have to be precise and

Leading The Way Treasa Byrne from Yellow Walls in Malahide is this week’s North County Living candidate. Treasa has been a member of the Swords Senior Citizens for the past decade and has been the secretary of the group for the past number of years. Sitting down to chat with the County Leader, Treasa is friendly, talkative (she describes herself as a real chatterbox), and is more than happy to speak on behalf of all who tirelessly volunteer with the Swords Senior Citizens. “Many think it is a little funny that I’ve been a member of the Swords group for so many years, even though I live in Malahide,” she said. “But I went along with a friend one day and I enjoyed it so much, that I just kept coming back.” Treasa has lived in Yellow Walls in Malahide for over 40 years, and generations of her family have lived in the vibrant town also. Despite living and rearing her family in the area, she says she very much feels a part of the community life in Swords, due to her involvement with the Senior Citizens group. “I love the social aspect of it and meeting friends and also the work that comes with the role of the secretary. I always like to be busy, and there’s always something to plan or organise, such as a trip away.” She says that it’s very important for there to be a social outlet such as the Senior Citizens in the area, because society today is very different compared to years ago. “Over the years, I’ve noticed people’s attitudes in terms of meeting and being sociable has really changed. People are hesitant to go to new places nowadays, so it can be a comfort to know that the premises is there for people to drop in to whenever they want to meet some new people from the area and so on.” She tells me briefly about the history of the very active group, which has been in its current location in Swords for the past 25 years. “The group originally started out as a Meals On Wheels (which has since been up and running separately for years) around 1970 and five ladies: Maureen Clancy, Joan Harvey, Pat O’Hare, Carmen Savage and Bridie O’Rourke got together and thought it would be nice if they had somewhere to go. It started off one day a week and all the then members fundraised very hard to raise the money so they could secure their own premises.” The group meet daily for a whole range of different activities and Treasa says the Wednesday afternoon bingo is still as popular as ever: “Our current group has around 200 to 300 members that come and go, and there is around 15 of us on the committee, who fill different

roles to get all the activities organised,” she continued. Treasa eagerly commends all the volunteers who work so hard to ensure that everything is run as smoothly as possible. “It’s the same core group of lovely people who are doing the volunteer work all the time, and we’re in great need of extra volunteers who could even spare an hour to help.” The volunteers freely give up their own time and work very hard to cater for the vast amount of members who attend on a daily basis, so they really would appreciate anyone who wants to lend a hand. Anyone is free to drop in for a cup of tea, a chat and to participate in whatever activity might be on that day. There is absolutely no charge for attending, and the group are always more than happy to welcome new members. Treasa’s role as secretary means she gets to be very creative and says she thoroughly enjoys her duties within the group. “I do a few different things as group secretary, including writing up the minutes of all the meetings we might have and designing different posters and things like that, which I enjoy.” Over the years, she says she’s noticed a thing or two about the attendees who would come to the group. “For one thing, those who attend are now getting younger and plenty of those also have their own cars, which is a massive change. Years ago, you would have nearly always been picked up and dropped to the centre, but it’s great to see positive change like that.” She says that whatever about the change in society, the same values and principles that existed from the start, still exist today. “People are very kind, they still do an awful lot for each other, which is wonderful to see.” When I ask her about herself, she mentions her husband Michael (to whom she has been married to for 47 years) and her five children, who are grown up, but she says she is delighted that they are still living very close by. She says the family owned a little grocery shop in the area for over 20 years, which she loved running. “My husband was a farmer and when the farming became an impossibility, we decided to open our own shop full of fruit and vegetables. “We got a little cabin for around £2,000, went and filled it up and that was how it started,”she said, laughing. “But it was a very enjoyable venture for us.” In her spare time she also enjoys knitting, arts and crafts and does a little bit of writing. She finishes off by once again mentioning everyone involved that works for the betterment of the group. “It really is a team effort, everyone works together and we do enjoy ourselves too!”

Revenue does not expect people to pay for a professional valuation. They have engaged extensively with local authorities in order to obtain lists of their properties that can be matched to their database. Because there was no existing complete register and because there will be difficulties in matching the addresses, letters will issue to tenants in a minority of cases. If you’ve received a property tax return, but are not the owner of the property, you should contact Revenue on 1890 200 255, so that they can correct their records. It is most important that you don’t ignore the letter because in the absence of any correction, Revenue will proceed on the basis that you are liable to pay LPT in respect of the property. Don’t ignore the return. The deadline for sending in paper returns is 7th May and the deadline for filing online is 28th May. Multiple property owners are obliged by law to file their returns online by 28th May. If necessary, they can get assistance in their local Revenue office, where computers are available and a Revenue official will assist them. Alternatively, an owner may authorise another person to file on his/her behalf.

Mystery Remains Over Theft From Balbriggan Garda Station A Garda, who had been arrested and questioned about the theft of €9,000, which went missing from Balbriggan Garda Station, has been released without charge. The money was part of a €26,000 haul that was taken in a robbery from the post office in Lusk, last January. Gardai from Balbriggan blocked the getaway car near to where it was stolen in Lusk. The money was initially checked, photographed and fingerprinted, before being bagged and tagged and placed in a safe in a strongroom at Balbriggan station It was when the owner of the money, John Wilson from Costcutters in Lusk, where the post office is located, called to the station to seek the return of the money, the discrepancy was discovered. Gardai found a small tear in the bag, and upon investigation, they discovered that only €17,000 was there. It appears that the money went missing from the evidence bag, while it was being held in the strongroom at the station.

help parents, who wish to go back to work. This is a government scheme which provides a free year of early childhood care and education for children of pre-school age. The upper age limit can be extended in some cases. The State pays a capitation fee to participating playschools and day-care services. In return, they provide a pre-school service free of charge to all children within the qualifying age range for a set number of

However, a child who has been assessed as having special needs may be able to spread their free pre-school year over two years. Tadpoles Childcare Crèches and Montessori schools are some of the most important facilities in the lives of young parents, who are still at work and wish to continue working. Being able to go to work, safe in the knowledge that your child is being cared for in a professional and loving environment is of paramount importance. The idea of giving up work when your child is born, is something that appeals to a lot of people, but not all. In this day and age of austerity and lack of jobs, many regard it as more important than ever to continue working and try to make ends meet. Trying to get the mix just right between continuing to stay at work, whilst ensuring that your child or children are being looked after in a caring and professional manner is no longer a case of hit and miss. The standard of crèches and Montessori schools has never been higher than it is today. Staff are

fully qualified in all aspects of childcare and are required to meet stringent FETAC qualifications. However, parents will be mindful when choosing a crèche or Montessori that it fulfils their requirements. In the first instance, they must be conveniently located, where ease of access is important. Secondly, they will have the aforementioned fully qualified staff, who will provide their child in a caring environment, where stimuli are provided on a regular basis. Another important consideration to be aware of is the ratio of children to teachers. It is so important to know that your child is not going to an overcrowded facility, where there is little chance of any individual attention. Parents who find it difficult to afford crèches or Montessori schools can avail of the Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) Scheme. This operates to

Butterflies Creche in Lusk is owned and operated by Cathy Crinigan. It was Cathy’s desire to create a safe and educational environment for children to grow and this has been spectacularly achieved. Butterflies Creche is a deliberate ‘home from home’ child centred space where children are loved and nurtured by professional and friendly staff. All classes at Butterflies are led by staff who hold FETAC level 5 or 6 or Montessori certificates. Safety and security is always a priority which is why Cathy has made sure that the additional staff have also been vetted and chosen for their keen interest in childcare and child development. Facilities at the Creche are varied; a baby room, early learning, pre-Montessori and Montessori are all available at Butterflies. Local Parents Vote For Change In Schools Patronage

Pictured are members of the Fingal Triathlon Juniors club at a recent fun day.

Members Needed For New Triathlon Juniors Club Over a ten week period last summer, the newly formed Fingal Triathlon Juniors Club held training sessions for the children of the adult club members. These sessions were primarily running and swim sessions and the emphasis was on fun at all times. These sessions were such big hit with the kids and parents, that it prompted calls for a more organised approach, so this year the group decided to take this one step further. For the next six months they organised coached swim and run sessions for the kids. These sessions are open to all children between the ages 5-12 (not just the children of club members) and will cater for all abilities. The swim sessions are taking place in the National Aquatics Centre

(NAC) and the run sessions take place in Balheary, Swords. The sessions include: Swimming in the NAC on Saturdays, from 3pm to 4pm, running in Balheary every Thursday from 6.30pm to 7.30pm, and there will be a cycle session which will replace the run session every fourth week. Then, a “splash and dash” race will take place in August, where the kids can put their new skills to the test. If any parents are interested in signing their child up, there is a three step process. For more information on the group and this process, please contact Ciaran on: 0861937473. The club are keen to not only develop and expand, but also to encourage other triathlon clubs around the county to consider something similar.

Parents in Dublin, including Malahide, Portmarnock and Rush have voted for change in patronage of primary schools. The Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairí Quinn T.D., has published the results of primary school patronage surveys from 38 towns across the country, including, Malahide, Portmarnock and Rush. These surveys were undertaken as part of the Minister’s response to the Forum on Patronage and Pluralism in primary schools and were aimed at establishing if parents want a more diverse range of primary school patrons in their area. Detailed analysis of the surveys shows that there is sufficient parental demand in 23 of the 38 areas to support an immediate change in the existing school patronage, including in the five Dublin areas.
