Sky Is The Limit For Swords Boy!

Pictured is award winner, Adam Vaughan, aged 10 from St Cronan's Senior National School in Brackenstown, with his teacher, Ms Somers.

A

Swords schoolboy is set to have his names literally in lights, when he won a European competition to have a satellite named after him. Adam Vaughan, a 10 year student at St Cronan’s Senior National School in Brackenstown, has just won the Irish leg of the European Galileo drawing contest, defeating 176 other entries from across the country. His satellite, named By Patrick Finnegan Commission to coinAdam Ireland, is due to be launched into 2019. The competis p a c e s o m e t i m e tion was organised between now and by the European

cide with the creation of the EU’s ‘Galileo’ satellite navigation system.

Adam’s satellite is one of the 30 being put into orbit, as part of the Galileo Satellite Programme. Galileo is a European replacement for the existing GPS satellite positioning system and will see a network of

satellites put into orbit for an expected 30 years. Children in all of the 27 EU countries were invited to enter the competition based on the theme, “Space and Aeronautics”. Adam’s entry, The Solar System , captured the Irish prize and he will now have a very personal interest in at least one of the satellites. Adam was absolutely thrilled with his achievement when he told the County Leader: “I’m really excited with all the attention. Hopefully when I’m old, I’ll look at the sky and be able to see my satellite. My friends are all delighted for me and my mam and dad are “over the moon” about it,” he said. School principal, Loreto Desmond was thrilled with Adam’s achievement, when she spoke to the County Leader: “The 4th class students were studying planets as part of their geography class. Teacher, Ms Somers was very impressed with the

NCHE is based at Broadmeadow Hall, Applewood in Swords. Established in 2009 and led by Helena Moore, it is a Fetac accredited facility providing a wide range of Health Care Education Programmes. NCHE chose Swords and the North County initially because of the young and highly educated population. On the other hand, the demands for elderly nursing care are going to increase dramatically over the coming years as a result of our ageing population, thereby giving great career opportunities in the fields of Nursing Home and private care. NCHE were delighted that Ambassador Paramente, the Lesotho Ambassador to Ireland attended the awards ceremony. The Lesotho Government, through Ambassador Paramente has been in discussions with NCHE to provide ‘Train the Trainer’ programmes in Leostho and to develop quality of the work produced that she decided to enter the class for the Astronomy Ireland Art competition. The winning child would have a satellite called after them and Ms Somers thought that this would tie in very well with what they were studying and there was jubilation when Adam won,” she said. “This is a great achievement for the school to win such a prestigious prize and special thanks is due to Ms Somers for her interest, dedication and foresight. It’s a great example of bringing interest and excitement to classroom learning,” she concluded.

courses to up skill and develop competency based training modules for the nursing profession in Leostho. Ambassador Paramente was head of the Lesotho Teacher Training College and is very aware of the great advantages and the importance of training in providing an escape from extreme poverty in Africa and to offer career pathways, social achievements and life style change. Fran Whelan, Director of NCHE is also a Director of Action Ireland Trust, who are also working closely with Ambassador Paramente and Portmarnock Community School who, together with 30 transition year students and 30 adult volunteers travel on the February 10th to Lesotho to work on projects in education, health and training programmes and the renovation of a nurse training college and Roma hospital.

Barretstown Is DAA Charity Of The Year Barretstown has been chosen as the Dublin Airport Authority’s Charity of the Year for 2012. Staff from Dublin, Cork and Shannon airports all cast a vote to choose a charity to fundraise for each year. Last year the 3T’s - Turning the tide of Suicide was the chosen charity and a cheque for the grand total raised will be presented in February. Barretstown is a charity dedicated to rebuilding the lives of those affected by childhood cancer, through a specially-designed camp that provides therapeutic recreation programmes for the children and their families. All of the children and families who visit Barretstown do so free of charge, with accommodation, food, medical assistance and airfares provided at no cost. Barretstown depends on the donations and fundraising efforts of individuals, groups and corporate supporters such as the DAA. The DAA Charity Committee and Staff are now hard at work planning many fundraising events for the coming year including a Sky Dive and White Collar Boxing Night.

work and cake sale and it will take place on Saturday 11th February in St. Teresa's School. 1pm to 5pm. they would be extremely grateful of your support. Anger At Downgrading Of Malahide Garda Station Malahide Garda Station will be downgraded in just over six weeks time. From March, the station will be closed from 10pm to 6am. Local senator, Darragh O’Brien (FF) has said he is extremely disappointed by the lack of response from Fine Gael and Labour Oireachtas members in Dublin North to the announcement. O’Brien said: “The silence from Fine Gael and Labour on this issue is extraordinary. The Government has decided that Malahide Garda Station will be closed from 10pm to 6am from March. On top of that, the nonemergency phone lines will actually divert to Coolock Garda station during Senator Darragh O’Brien these hours so people simply won’t be able to contact Malahide gardai. It means that 50,000 people in the Howth-Malahide local electoral area will be without a full-time Garda station for the first time. “This is a major shock to the community. I raised this issue on the number of occasions when concerns were being voiced locally but the Government refused to give any assurance to residents of Malahide, Portmarnock and Kinsealy and proceeded with the cut. “As a public representative, the only thing I was involved in helping close was the Headshop in Malahide. The community-led campaign in that regard ensured this came about and demonstrates that a community campaign in Malahide, Kinsealy and Portmarnock can be successful in reversing this downgrade. “I will continue to campaign against this major cut to community services. Hundreds of people have already contacted my office to voice their concern and I will be meeting with community groups and representatives in the campaign against the downgrading of Malahide Garda Station,” he concluded.

Swords School Has To Turn Students Away

‘Scientist’ Triumph For Skerries School

Pictured here is Eamon Hennelly McCarthy from Skerries Community College. He won 2nd prize in his category for his Biometrics projects at the recent BT Young Scientist awards.

It was another successful year for Skerries Community College at this year’s BT Young Scientist Awards. Transition Year student, Eamon Deanney McCarthy won second place in his category for his Biometrics project. Eamon has participated in the competition two years previously with his projects like ‘The Biggest Prime Number Ever.’ Eamon was “thrilled with the winâ€? and will no doubt do just as well in future competitions. A number of other students also participated in the competition. Tom McDonald entered with his project Shifting Sands on Skerries Beach which generated great public interest. GrĂĄinne Jones and Megan Doyle carried out an interesting experiment involving upscaling seaweed to manufacturing level and finally, Caragh O’Hanlon and Claire O'Brien submitted their project entitled ‘Enhancement of Athletics Performance using Music.â€? A big congratulations are due for all the students in Skerries Community College who successfully participated in the competition.

Loreto Girls' School in River Valley, Swords is still waiting for an extension to be built, despite having originally applied for one in 2003. The school gets more and more applicants each year and, as a result of the lack of space, has to turn many away as they just haven’t got the space. Speaking to the County Leader, Deputy Principal, Michael Behan says that the school is at the top of the list, but has yet to hear of any development on the issue: “It’s just a shame that we are still waiting as the issue isn’t over crowding as such, it’s more the fact that we have to turn students

Secondary School Innovation Challenge The Agri Aware Green Dragon Secondary School Innovation Challenge is back to once again entice our young innovators around the North County to develop and implement original and ground breaking ideas for the Agriculture, Food, Environment and Health and Safety sectors. North County Students are encouraged to develop their concept for a new product or service within these four sectors. The ultimate goal is to impress the Green Dragon panel and take the students’ idea to the marketplace. A total of 25 finalists will battle it out at the National Final in March for the highly coveted prize of a development fund of €7,000, in addition to a number of runners up prizes for students, teachers and their schools. Speaking on the importance of the Green Dragon Innovation Challenge, Agri Aware Chairman Bernard Donohue told the County Leader: “Students are full of talent and potential. North County Living by Caroline Heffernan

From Making Pints To Making Peace Brendan Butler, Chairperson of Malahide Justice and Peace Group and retired vice principal of Loreto Convent, Swords, has long been an advocate of justice and peace, locally, nationally and internationally. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Justice and Peace Group in Malahide in November 2008 in conjunction with Fr. Gerry Tanham and Fr. Paul Thornton, priests in the combined parishes of St. Sylvester's and Yellow Walls, at the time. The aim of the Justice and Peace Group is to 'recognise the existence of injustice and have the vision and the courage to respond.' “Justice is indivisible,” Brendan states. “You can't say you're for justice 'here' without being for justice 'there'.” I ask him if he recalls when he first felt the importance of justice and fairness. “Maybe it was honed when I worked at the Guinness Brewery,” he laughs. “I grew up in Kilmainham and began working for Guinness when I was 14. I didn't want to leave school, but my mother said I couldn't turn down a job in Guinness. It was well paid with many employee benefits, but there was a terrible chasm between the English educated brewers who came over and the rest of us,” Brendan explains. “I remember one particular day when a young lad called Alan spat on the cobblestones in the yard. There was uproar. He was ordered by the head brewer to find the stone he spat on and wash it with carbolic acid. We were all looking out the window and I remember feeling it was so unjust and humiliating for Alan.” Since the establishment of the Justice and Peace Group, one of their significant local achievements was the closure of the 'head shop' in Malahide in 2010. “We spearheaded that campaign by picketing the shop on a regular basis,” he says. The closure was warmly welcomed by local parents Brendan believes strongly in the value of education and the Justice and Peace Group's involvement with the New Life Centre in the neighbouring parish of Darndale reflects this. I had six Junior Cert students last year and taught English and History,” he explains. “The whole purpose of third year in the New Life Centre, is to get students through the Junior Cert in the hope they will move on to Leaving Cert when they are less likely to drop out of the education system.” Brendan's life as a teacher began when he left Guinness at the age of 22 having completed a degree in Sociology. “I taught English, History and Religion in Loreto Convent, North Great George’s Street before its move to River Valley in 1984,” he explains. Close to the school was the Adult Education Institute in Mountjoy Square. With its ethos of providing second chance education to adults, Brendan soon began teaching Business Ethics and Sociology at night. “I taught every Thursday night for years and enjoyed it no end. I first met Fr. Gerry there and he was terrific. We'd a priest from South America who taught Liberation Theology and how the gospel could be reflected in our community. Perceived as having the

potential to be revolutionary, Archbishop Desmond Connell closed us down. He closed the whole place,” Brendan exclaims, still incredulous at this drastic decision that he believes may have been directed from Rome. Through the Justice and Peace group, Brendan has lobbied for the use of Fair Trade products which has local, national and international benefits. “Malahide is a Fair Trade Parish and we use Fair Trade tea, coffee and biscuits at every event we organise. We visited every restaurant in the village advocating the use of Fair Trade products and were delighted that most of them already were. Fiona Droney, a member of the group and a teacher in Pope John Paul II N.S. has done fantastic work teaching the children at school the value of supporting fair trade products and they in turn have educated their parents,” says Brendan . Brendan can trace his own personal engagement with injustices throughout the wider world back to 1976. “I have a brother-in-law who worked in El Salvador at the time and through him I learnt that basic human rights in the country were dreadful. I contacted Trocaire, Amnesty and Pax Christie and in 1979 we formed the Irish El Salvador Support Committee. When Archbishop Romero of El Salvador was murdered in 1980, we organised a protest outside the U.S. Embassy in Northumberland Road and 3,000 people took part. We may have had some impact,” Brendan comments modestly, “as it was the only time at the United Nations that the Irish Government voted against the United States.” A practising Catholic, he concludes that “if there is injustice in the church you must speak out about that too.” To this end Brendan recently joined a group called 'We are Church.' It was established in Austria in 1995 by a radical group of Catholics and has since spread across Europe and the United States. 'We are Church' believe in agitating for reform of the Catholic Church from within. As Brendan points out the 'ordinary' members of the Church are what make it. As spokesperson for 'We are Church' in Ireland Brendan is liaising with the Association of Catholic Priests in achieving the aims of the group which include democracy for all members, the removal of compulsory celibacy and the ordination of women. Brendan's energy and enthusiasm for what he believes is boundless. His engagement with the world around him locally, nationally and internationally has led to him being an active advocate in the search of justice and peace. His regular letters in a personal capacity to national newspapers and his appearance on national television ensure his message is heard. Anyone interested in joining the Justice and Peace Group can contact Brendan at 086 4054984 and they are particularly keen to hear from younger people in the area.

One of the first steps in setting the mood for a spring wedding is sending out spring themed wedding invitations. Typically, wedding invitations with a spring influence have spring flowers or spring scenery on them. Many newlyweds are opting to send pocket invitations these days. There are a ton of different wedding invitations with beautiful flowers on them and the North County has an array of shops that will be able to make you pick the perfect invites. Alternatively, some couples might choose to get the less expensive, more affordable wedding invitations. This way, they can have more money to spend on the spring wedding decorations!

The Wedding Dress Part of the reason why spring weddings are so popular is because of the wonderful weather! Of course this depends on where you live, but generally speaking, spring weather is very pleasant and fresh. Because the temperatures are typically not too hot and not too cold, there are a lot of options for the wedding dress. It is best to choose a more versatile dress that can suit you in both warm and cold weather. (Maybe try to find a dress that is light but that can be paired with a wrap.) Spring weddings also allow room for adding an elegant touch of colour to the wedding dress. Today, many brides choose to have a sash or embroidery of a different colour on their dresses. There are certainly quite a few unique and stylish spring colours to choose from. The North County has an choice of stunning dresses for you to choose from.

Wedding Party And Guest Attire Today's weddings are becoming more and more colourful. You are free to let your imagination run wild and pick some bright and cheerful colours for your bridesmaid

You can save a lot of money on your wedding by purchasing in season flowers. In fact, you can save even more money if you can manage to work out a

deal to use the church's flowers (if getting married in a church). Typically churches have lots of flowers for special Sunday services such as Easter Sunday. Many shops here in the North County will give you a special deal on your floral arrangements and have a great and varied selection too.

there are a number of spring wedding decorations out there. Try purchasing decorations that are pastel blue, pink or lavender. You could also put seasonal flowers up as centrepieces at the reception tables. Instead of having wedding guests throw rice or bird seed, you could have them throw rose petals. When it comes to having a Spring Wedding spring themed Decorations wedding, you are Just like with only limited by your wedding favours, imagination!

Menu Ideas The icing on the cake for a spring themed wedding could be your menu. Try serving fresh young vegetables such as sugar snap peas, baby carrots, baby asparagus or potatoes. You could even serve fresh carrot cake, yummy! Fresh fruits would also be quite festive. Consider serving strawberries, mangoes, apricots or pomegranates. Get out there and have a unique, spring wedding using some of these ideas! Remember, you are only limited by your imagination, so think of creative ways to make your wedding special and different from the rest! Have a spring wedding!
