Tidy Towns Roses Set To Blossom Call For Your Support T

he eagerly awaited annual Tidy Towns competition is now in full swing, with the imminent arrival of the judging panels. This competition has traditionally brought glory to our towns and villages, many of whom have performed at the highest level and hopefully, one of them can claim the ultimate prize of ‘Overall Winner’.

These are the eight North Dublin girls who were selected from the North County Leader, Dublin North Regional Semi-Final of the Rose of Tralee in the Carlton Hotel last Sunday evening, they go forward to the Dublin Final in Citywest on June 25th with the hope of representing Dublin at the International Rose of Tralee Festival in Kerry. Pictured are: Elizabeth O'Hagan, Kim Connick, Joanne McKiernan, Róisín Brophy, Áine McCarthy, Doireann Ní Chaomhánaigh, Valarie Haugh, Cathy McAndrew.

By Patrick Finnegan Tidy Towns committee members around the county are making an appeal to all visitors and residents alike to be extra vigilant in disposing of litter, which drain much needed points from the great work of the hard working local committees. People who carelessly discard cigarette ends from parked cars undermine this great work. Anne Doyle from Skerries Tidy Towns committee is particularly concerned about this habit. “People who discard cigarette ends in this fashion are a particular concern,” she said. She also praised the great work of the volunteers and the success of their “Adopt an Area” scheme, which is based on the successful model where groups adopted a beach with great success. Unfortunately the hard working and enthusiastic Tidy Towns committee in Balbriggan were dealt a huge blow recently with a break in at their storage facility, where all the petrol driven tools – three grass mowers, two strimmers, and a leaf blower were stolen, leaving the Tidy Towns with only the basic equipment. This is now a great opportunity for the community spirited people of Balbriggan to rally around their committee and give as much support as they can. They are unlikely to be found wanting in this regard. Zoe Nelson, Balbriggan Tidy Towns Biodiversity Officer said, “The volunteers are devastated but they are a determined bunch and they won’t let this setback keep them from making Balbriggan a beautiful place to live, work and visit. Work will continue by hand, but it will be much harder work and take much longer to complete the chores around the town. Our 2011 entry for the Tidy Towns National competition was submitted, so we are even

more keen to show the thieves that despite their efforts to thwart our cause, we will still ensure all the residents of Balbriggan can be proud of the 2011 competition results.” She also appealed for anyone with a secure location to house equipment to contact committee members. Rush is making its welcome re-entry to the competition after many years absence. The committee have been in action for the past number of weeks and Louise O’Loughlin said that the Council are now finally repairing the unsightly speed ramps which were proving an obstacle in their efforts to impress the judges. Their close neighbours in Lusk have also been very active in their efforts to improve on last year’s excellent result. Secretary Pat Kelly was full of praise for the work undertaken by the volunteers. “The committee have done trojan work around the village, sweeping, digging and planting and I want to say a big thank you to our friends in Lusk Neighbourhood Watch who have joined in and given us great support, also thanks to sponsor SuperValu for donating gifts of a shovel, spades, bags, gloves and poppy.” Donabate has had its challenges this year with the problems due to the ongoing water piping roadworks and the building of two new schools and a water pumping station within 200 metres of each other. Blaithin O’Donnell told

the County Leader of a unique plan to make the work interesting, “We are putting in extra work with a wetlands project near St. Ita’s with funding from LEADER, which we hope will increase our points yet again in the biodiversity category. As part of TG4’s G Day on 13th June, Donabate Tidy Towns will be organising a “bailiú bruscar” the previous day, where the traditional clean up will be done as Gaeilge. Regular high achievers Malahide, has also been busy. Chairman of the committee, Gerry Rafferty said, “Its a team effort. Rubbish is rubbish and everyone is really pulling together , so that we can make the absolute best of the town for the competition,” he said. The situation in Swords is one of disappointment that their recruitment drive for volunteers fell somewhat short of expectations. Secretary, Des Becton said, “We have submitted our entry and are still hopeful that our call for volunteers will be answered in time for us to make an impression in the competition,” he said. At a time when house prices have plummeted and the demand for housing has dropped, the local Tidy Towns committees are doing their utmost to generate interest in their areas, thus enhancing the profile of their districts and to make the North County a desirable place to live. Let’s get behind them and do our bit to contribute in a positive way.

Speaking about the project, Daly said, “Metro is vital for Swords and for jobs, it is the best placed of all the transport projects to go ahead, given that it has gone through the planning stages and the amount that has been spent and raised for it so far. Statements from Minister Varadkar and the ESRI indicate that this project may be axed. People in Swords from commuters, to the community and local businesses, cannot allow a U-turn.” “I am urging everyone to attend this meeting, which will be addressed by Paul Hansard from SIPTU, formerly from the construction sector, who will deal with the important impact that this project can have on putting people back to work in the area,” she said.

We think this is a great opportunity to give something back to them for all the hard work they do”. As there is no cost to the patients or the patient’s family to receive this care, St Francis relies on charitable donations and fundraising from volunteers. Over 20,000 Portuguese fans travelled through Dublin Airport on May 18th last on what was the busiest day in the Airport’s history from an operational point of view. They were in Dublin for the Europa League final between Porto and Braga, two Portuguese teams. There were up to 100 extra charter flights bringing the fans into Dublin. The County Leader decided to a view proceedings from the perimeter of the airport and we were immediately taken aback by the large amount of plane spotters who travelled from all over the UK and Europe to view the visiting planes on the tarmac. It proved to be a bumper day for hundreds of plane spotters who travelled to view proceedings. There were groups from Germany, Switzerland, Holland as well as Britain. A group from Manchester and another from Glasgow spoke of their great interest in plane spotting and were delighted with the large number of planes on view. However, they were unanimous in their disappointment at the lack of facilities available for them to pursue

North County’s Sculptor Supreme T

ravelling around North County Dublin there are many wonderful examples of local man Michael Killen's sculptures. One of his most imposing sculptures is the oak crucifix suspended from the ceiling in the Church of the Sacred Heart in Seabury, Malahide. In Swords Castle, Michael carved the Chandelier made by Cathal Murray and Larry Gaffney of the County Council, which hangs in the Constable's Tower and sculpted life style busts of 13th century workers which are housed in the chapel of the castle. The bronze low relief located at the 13th tee of the Island Golf Club was commissioned to commemorate the ferry service that operated in the past between Malahide and the Club.

I asked Michael if he ever feels self conscious The hours were long but never arduous and, of his work once it's in the public domain, and while gaining experience in many forms of he laughs replying “constantly! Michael returned to Ireland in 1976 and worked with Imogen Stuart, possibly the most famous sculptor in the country. He assisted her in a number of commissions, including Pangur Bán, which is now on display in the grounds of UCD. He has great respect for artists and craftsmen, both past and present and describes walking around Dublin looking up at the detailed work carried out by craftsmen as “going back to the turn of the last century and even before that, when a lot of work was hand cut.” Much of his work is commissioned through word of mouth while some has been secured through the EU 'percent' scheme where one per cent of budget for public construction must be dedicated to art work. These commissions are awarded through open

competition where the artist's name does not appear on the work to ensure fairness. Michael's work has inevitably been influenced by his life and his travels. He believes he is learning all the time. “You draw on what you see around you and your own life. You may also get inspiration from literature or from a poem.” His work is fluid, constantly changing in terms of the materials he uses and the sculptures he creates both classical and contemporary. He mentions that in the last few years a lot of the work he has done has been 'contemplative and quiet' but recently he has found himself moving away from that and becoming 'more lively.' In 2009 he created a sculpture in bronze which depicts the action of the 'greasy pole' fun event held in West Cork at its annual regatta. In his spare time, Michael jogs and swims and is an active member of Malahide Camera Club. He teaches woodcarving at night time in Malahide Community School, a pastime he first enjoyed back in the '70s. While his brother Peter is the renowned Antarctic sailor, Michael gave up sailing many years ago. As with many people who enjoy and find their jobs rewarding and fulfilling, the notion of retirement is not on his agenda and Michael describes 'every day as a first day.' Following some initial impact from the recession, he says “work has really improved with a steady flow of commissions coming in.” He is looking forward to his forthcoming exhibition in The Irish Embassy in Berlin in 2012, as well as continuing to exhibit in The Doorway Gallery in Dublin and Kenny's of Galway. Having sold work abroad, Michael is happy to see the demand for his work in Europe increase and is considering establishing a part time base in Berlin. While wishing him well with this venture we know that his sculptures will undoubtedly continue to give hours of pleasure to innumerable people in North County Dublin and across Ireland for many years to come.

Dispute Halts Work At Donabate-Portrane Scheme Local Socialist TD Clare Daly fully supports the recent protest carried out by Conneely Construction workers at Portrane Waste Qater Plant. She has called on the County Council to force SIAC Construction to pay the workers for their work done on the site. A big local clean up took place in Holywell, in Swords recently. The Holywell Residents Committee in association with An Taisce organised the clean up, with over 30 bags of rubbish collected on the day. Over 20 local residents took part in the clean up. This was the 3rd successful clean up to take place in the area. Pictured are Residents Committee members, Christian Welters and Maurice Cunningham and local resident, Noel Cusack who participated in the clean up. Pic: JR

Ballyboughal’s Cian The Real Clean Hero Ballyboughal man, Cian Delaney was the winner of a silver medal in his age category in the European Duathlon Championships held in Limerick recently. Cian was up against 600 athletes and finished second in the 25 to 29 years category. He is now in training for the world championships in Gijon in Spain in September. Cian is very ambitious and said, “With confidence and ambition growing in the event, I am hoping to eventually leave the age category behind and compete alongside the elite athletes in the sport.” A duathlon is basically a triathlon without the swimming part in it.

Cian works as an airport fire officer and his work helps him keep fit. This type of job requires the fire officers to keep fit and there are gym facilities available to them at the Airport which help Cian, not only to do his job, but compete at his challenging hobby. He entered the airport fire service two years ago after first working in the Airport Search Unit (ASU). ‘I just entered an internal competition for it and I was lucky enough to get it. I love the job,’ he said. At his job, he is always alert and ready to respond quickly to any emergency and this shows his sharpness has a knock on effect to the duathlon event which requires him to complete a 10km run followed by a 40km cycle and another 5km run to the finish.

remaining €56,000 that they owe them, despite having signed a contract with the subcontractors." The dispute has resulted in work being brought to a halt on the site. Daly continued: “I have visited the protest to show my support to the workers of Conneely Construction whose contract was abruptly terminated by SIAC last week despite another three months of work remaining at the plant. Despite what SIAC say, the reason for terminating the contract was because Conneely Construction were pursuing them for outstanding monies owed for work performed.” Daly is calling on the County Council to inter-

vene in the matter to ensure that the Conneely Construction workers are paid and so that work on the site can recommence. “I call on the local authority management to intervene and put it up to

SIAC to meet their obligations to Conneely and to allow them to complete their work on the site so that the 12 jobs can be saved and a small company saved from bankruptcy."

A German View Of Swords Town Park As a German thinking about Ireland, I imagine a beautiful green country with great nature. That view definitely changed when I was visiting Swords Town Park. It started at the entrance, where I saw an undone construction works on a stone wall, which were hardly secured. To me, this is a very high risk for children playing around. There were lots of beer cans and broken bottles lying around, which definitely is a major risk to little visitors. While walking around the area I noticed that the grass seemed cut regularly, which is a difference to parks we have in Germany. But I was wondering why is it so

The County Council are planning to increase the number of patrols of the Fingal beaches during the summer months. The new plan is being formed in order to enforce litter laws and to make sure the public obey them. As more will no doubt flock to our beaches to enjoy some Summer festivities, this plan will ensure that our beaches stay clean and so that everyone can enjoy them.

Kettles Country House Hotel in Rolestown recently held a successful Wedding Fair. Many top exhibitors had exhibition stands to showcase their their works and wedding services, including, of course Kettles Country House Hotel themselves. Guests of the fair were treated to free glasses of bubbly and finger food, as well as a wedding fashion show. The Kettles weekend bouncy castle helped keep the little ones entertained. Pictured are bride-to-be, Margret Cawley who is getting married on the 6th of September, with her sister, Pic: JR Martina McDonald at the Wedding Fair.

Charity Motorcycle Run A charity motorcycle run will take place in Gormanston at 11am on May 28th to raise vital funds for Cystic Fibrosis. The whole event is organised as a memorial tribute to Declan ‘Richie’ Richardson from Balbriggan who passed away 16 months ago. “He was a huge motorcycle fan so that’s why we decided to do a motorcycle run,” said his wife Nancy. The event takes place in Gormanston as Richie was based there while he was in the Defence Force’s and all his friends from up there help organise the entire day. “I wish I could take the credit for the organising but its really all his friends that do everything. They organise the run and all the food for the evening and it’s really a great team on behalf of all his family and friends,” she says. The fundraiser is in its second year running. Last year the event was a huge success and €4,500 was raised will all the funds going to Spina Bifida and it’s hoped that this years event will be just as successful. Anyone who would like more information about the day or would like to make a donation to this great cause should contact Nancy on 0851604382.

ence of a lifetime will visit Swords, playing in Carnegie Court Hotel, from June 2nd to June 4th, as part of the nationwide tour. The well known characters, snobbish manic Basil, his domineering wife, Sybil and their hopeless language-challenged waiter, Manuel will take charge in Carnegie Court Hotel for one night to serve dinner and a feast of comic delights. Everything that can wrong does in an evening of beautifully controlled chaos. This is a terrific night out. Tickets are available from the hotel at 01 8404384 or www.carnegiecourt.com.

Hilarious Comedy In Skerries The Little Theatre in Skerries presents ‘No Dinner for Sinners’ by Edward Taylor. This hilarious comedy will run until next Saturday 28th of May at 8pm. ‘No Dinner for Sinners’ charts a hectic Saturday in the life of a young advertising executive, Jim Watt (Colm Reid), Dublin manager for a big international company. Tonight Bill McGregor (Ray McCarthy), the American head of his firm is coming with his wife Nancy (Helen McNamara) to dinner in Jim’s smart flat. McGregor is an intolerant puritan and expects all his staff to be respectably

married. Bachelor Jim had assumed that Helen (Emer McNally), his glamorous live-in lover, would pose as his wife. But after some romantic breakfast horseplay goes wrong, she announces she’s leaving him. To keep his job, Jim must find a wife for the evening. But where.? His devoted secretary Terri (Sara Magee) would do it, but she is otherwise engaged. In desperation Jim recruits his cleaning lady, Betty (Margaret Tucker), who’ll do anything for money - and quite a lot for small change. At least she’ll know how to cook the dinners.

Malahide Castle Project Funding Welcomed Deputy Alan Farrell (FG) has welcomed the announcement by the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government that €6.5m will be allocated to the Malahide Castle Project. Farrell described it as an economic driver for job creation in the area. He said, “As a result of notification from the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government that funding of the Malahide Castle is now forthcoming, I am very pleased that the County Council may now plan for the considerable works on the Malahide Craft courtyard and Botanical Gardens within the Malahide demesne.” “The project will bring be an encouraging boost to local tourism, and it is noteworthy that 100 jobs will be created during the construction phase, in a wide range of areas, including conservation and construction, and a further 100 jobs will be generated thereafter once the project is completed. I believe this will be a critical economic driver for job creation in the Malahide and the North County area.”
