Time To Deliver Metro W
ith the appointment of three Government Ministers to the North County area, there is now no excuse for the delivery of projects which are deemed vital to job creation in the area. Two of the ministers, namely James Reilly and Leo Varadkar have been allocated particularly important and powerful portfolios where the North County is concerned. For Leo Varadkar, who represents a large portion of Swords, as the new Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, the delivery of the vital Metro North is clearly in his gift and is his to oversee. The electorate have already sacked three Government TDs in a merciless show of anger at their perceived lack of drive on issues affecting the North County. The same electorate will be equally unforgiving if Metro North, by far the most important project in the area is not delivered, and Dr. James Reilly TD

By Patrick Finnegan soon. Both Varadkar and new Health Minister, James Reilly have been advocates of Metro North from the relative security of the opposition benches, but now that the safety net has been removed, the pressure is on them to deliver. Remember, while in opposition, our new Dáil deputies were scathing in their criticism of the previous Government representatives in the constituency. Now it’s time for them to step Brendan Ryan TD up to the mark! It is difficult to overstate the importance of Metro North to the residents and businesses of Swords and the North County in general, with the promise of 37,000 jobs to be delivered during its construction. The pressure is now squarely on Varadkar’s shoulders to make good on his pre election promises and ensure that it goes through without delay. Reilly’s elevation to the Health Ministry is also set to heighten the expectation level of North County residents. There are concerns that Metro North may suffer as it was not mentioned specifically in the Programme for Government of either Government parties and the fear is that it may be swept aside, as other projects are prioritised. The safe delivery of Metro North will be severely put to the test, as the new government unearths financial dark secrets from the previous Leo Varadkar TD regime. It is vital that both new Ministers ‘hold their ground’ in respect of the projects that are vital to economic growth and job creation here in the
North County. Reilly’s idea of a potential hospital, university and medical school in the heart of the North County would bring the necessary growth required to get us back on our feet. His portfolio of Health is one that has caused most concern for successive governments and has been plagued by long waiting lists and hospital queues that are unacceptable to our people. Make no mistake, the people of the North County, who have suffered for many years through an inequitable health service, will not be prepared to extend a long honeymoon to Dr Reilly. The election of Brendan Ryan Clare Daly TD and Clare Daly, both supporters of Metro North, will be closely observed. We need them to keep the pressure up. Ryan’s performance will be particularly scrutinised, as his party are in government. Just like the new Ministers, he is in the firing line and under similar pressure to ensure that all the promises are delivered and that momentum is maintained. Otherwise, the sharp axe of our unforgiving electorate will be delivJoan Burton TD ered in the same clinical, ruthless manner as happened on 25th February last. This is a clear warning that only a top class performance by our newly elected Government representatives will suffice. The people of the North County will prove to be tough taskmasters, as already shown and will not hesitate to pass a severe judgement of our new representatives, if they fail to deliver.

Controversial Balbriggan Laneway In News Again Months after it featured in your No 1 local newspaper, the disputed laneway between Bremore Castle and Hampton Woods in Balbriggan, is back in the news again. On Sunday March 6th last, residents of Bremore Castle and other concerned residents gathered at the laneway to launch their official “Save Our Laneway” campaign. Balbriggan Library Waives Fines There was a great sense of community spirit last week in Balbriggan Library as they ran a Fines Free Week. This gave people who may have been a member of the library over the years to catch up on the latest reading material and technology at the library. The aim of the event was also to encourage people who may have forgotten to bring a book back, or who had an outstanding fine to rejoin and get back involved free of charge, as the library waived all outstanding charges. The library was renovated in 1981 and extended in 2006 as part of the re-development of George’s Square. Senior Librarian of Balbriggan Library,

By Leslie Murphy Assumpta Hickey, told the County Leader, “ We had a great week and a very big turn out of people who were delighted to take advantage of the initiative. Lots of people came in to clear fines and re-joining. It was great because those who had been members before also introduced their family members and young children. It’s great to see so many people getting back involved, as the library has so much to offer”. The library was built in 1905 and an extension was built in 2006. Malahide School’s Inventive Fundraiser By Julie Murphy A Mad Hatters Tea Party held in St Sylvester’s Infant School, in Malahide recently was a lively affair. Children and parents were encouraged to don their maddest looking hat and enjoy the colourful array of delicious cakes and buns on offer. Along with the cake sale, the Tea Party featured a raffle and a guessing competition which is always a favourite. Kids lined up for their chance to guess how many
smarties were squeezed into the brightly decorated cake. The cake sale in St Sylvester’s is an annual event, but the “Mad Hatter” theme is a recent addition which adds more fun and creativity to the day as many children make use of their imagination and create their own mad hat with prizes awarded for the best hats. The icing on this Mad Hatter’s Tea party cake was the money raised for the school. School trips for the children will benefit as a result of the €1900 raised. Great credit is due to the parents and children for reaching such a sum in difficult economic times.

after. Certainly the bitter pill of redundancy has been well sugared in these instances. Fine Gael has said that the party is committed to abolishing severance pay for ministers. They say they will restrict the payment of pensions to politicians so that a pension can only be received after someone has ceased to be a TD and reached the national retirement
age (currently 65). They say they will cap taxpayers’ subsidies for pension schemes for politicians (and indeed for everybody) that deliver income in retirement of more than €60,000. Already they have stumbled at their first hurdle of political reform when they said they would restrict the number of junior ministers to 12. They have already exceeded this number.
Malahide United Walk Of Dreams Malahide United Football Club is getting involved with all other football clubs in the country for ‘Walk of Dreams’ which is an initiative run by the John Giles Foundation and backed by FAI. There will be a massive sponsored walk in Dublin on March 27th for all the clubs. The players will be rewarded by finishing with a free concert in the Aviva stadium. 50 percent of the monies raised will go to the foundation and the other 50 percent to the club. The John Giles Foundation aims to give children an opportunity and focus with the help of football. The ‘Walk of Dreams’ is a national fund-raising campaign organised to support local community programmes and to invest in the improvement of football clubs equipment. Paul Furey, Committee member and coach with Malahide United, told the County Leader, “ This is a great way for players and their families to get involved in this great initiative. It’s great to also support the local community programmes and to invest in the improvement of new equipment for the football club.” From May 1, the JGF will be accepting applications from clubs to fund football/community projects, etc., that will help promote community cohesion, participation, education and health.

Skerries Kids Celebrates World Book Day To mark World Book Day recently, children attending ‘After School Creative Writing’ class, run by Megan Wynne in Skerries MIlls came up with a ‘novel’ idea. They celebrated by bringing in their favourite reads and books they no longer wanted. The children recommended their top favourites - The ‘Skullduggery Pleasant’ series by Derek Landy and
‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ series by Jeff Kinney were mentioned most often. Megan Wynne was delighted with how things worked out and said, “The children swapped books they had already read. It was wonderful to see them going home with smiles on their faces and dying to read their new-to-them treasures. It is a wonderful initiative to give young and old the opportunity to talk about the muchloved parallel universe of stories and books,” she concluded.
Anything Goes In Rush Rush Musical Society will soon set sail for the much loved Nautical Musical Comedy “Anything Goes” which runs in the Millbank Theatre for nine nights. North County Dublin’s
Great Success Of ‘Start Your Own Business’ Programme Over 300 jobs have been created locally by graduates of the ‘Start Your Own Business’ programme in the last two years, according to new research from the Fingal County Enterprise Board. The figures show an impressive 81 per cent of the 483 course participants have already started, or are about to start their own business in the region. This has resulted in at least 300 jobs to date. The part-time ‘Start Your Own Business Programme’ is delivered by the Fingal County Enterprise Board several times a year and is geared towards people thinking of starting their own company. Participants are taught about effective business planning, finance, marketing, sales, legal issues and funding sources.
The research findings, carried out independently last month, have shown that 40 per cent of businesses established in Fingal are currently exporting, or have real potential to export in the near future. Oisin Geoghegan, CEO of the Fingal County Enterprise Board welcomed the figures, saying: “The importance of these new businesses and new jobs to our local economy is clear. Small businesses have the potential to turn our economy around, creating real and sustainable jobs in our communities,” he said. Another optimistic note is that 99 per cent of those surveyed were happy with their decision to set up a business in the North County region. “This figure in particular
demonstrates a huge amount of confidence by these businesses to grow and prosper, despite the tough trading climate,” added Geoghegan. The next 10-week ‘Start Your Own Business’ Programme is starting on Tuesday, March 29th in Swords and the ten modules covered under the programme including, Self-assessment, Legal Issues for Start-Ups, Preparing a Business Plan, Market Research. Other modules in the programme include, Finance, Funding Sources, Basic Bookkeeping. Sales and ICT Training is just one of the support services on offer to new business startups and one of the most practical and valuable support measures is the one-to-one mentoring service. The Enterprise Board also runs two successful networks: the Fingal Women in Business Network and the Fingal
N0.1
Business Network, which is aimed at newly established business owners in the region. Geoghegan concluded, “Enterprise supports do work effectively in Fingal, but we must continue to invest in job creation measures, to enable more people to start
a business or grow an existing business here.” Places on the Start Your Own Business Programme cost €200, which include all course materials and refreshments. Bookings can be made on-line at www.fingalceb.ie or by telephoning (01) 8900 800.

ran workshops for 1st, 2nd and 3rd classes, while Niamh Sharkey worked with the Junior Infants, Senior Infants and first and second class. The idea was to generate and foster a love of reading among the pupils. Prizes were given for the best in each class for designing bookmarks, book covers and review of homework. On the final day, (Friday), the children all dressed up as a character from a book. They brought the book their character was from to school on the day and were asked questions about their choice of character. Prizes were awarded to the best and most original efforts. Parents were also invited to attend the awards ceremony in the school hall. Both teachers and pupils alike, completely embraced the concept, with teachers also dressing up as characters on the day. It all added up to a memorable day for all.

The Man In The Hut James McKay, ‘the man in the hut,’ at the Estuary Recycling Centre, Swords, represents the changing face of waste disposal in Ireland today. Even the title ‘Recycling Centre’ is a movement away from the past. In those days, we ‘dumped’ our waste. As we have become more conscious of preserving and protecting the environment in which we live, we now segregate and recycle waste. Customers of The Estuary Recycling Centre undoubtedly have a ‘feel good experience’ and James’s friendliness is central to this. Having worked for 20 years as a driver for the County Council, James began working at the centre when it opened to the public in June 2006. Despite his protestations ‘that there’s nothing really of interest about him,’ James is the face of the centre, meeting and greeting his customers with unending courtesy. As he nears retirement, the people of North County Dublin will miss him. His hut is cosy and warm, neat as a pin and as I walk in to it to chat with him, James is feeding blackbirds discarded apples, cut into small pieces to make it easier for them to swoop and swallow… nothing goes to waste.
New Cricket Club Formed In Swords Hot on the heels of Ireland’s wonderful achievemant at the Cricket World Cup, comes news that a new cricket club has been formed in Swords. The cricket loving people in Swords gathered together and used to play cricket in and around the Swords area using a soft ball. This was basically driven by the Indian community here. They used to play cricket in River valley, Holywell and Malahide for the last four years. They started playing during the breaks while playing football. Now cricket is the main game. Last year, they played four tournaments and were runners up in one, and in all others reached the semi finals. Buoyed on by this success, they decided to form a club and the work stared in September 2010. A general meeting was held and Fr. Tony Pazhayakalam of St.Cronan's Church, Brackenstown was elected as the Chairman of the club and Mr. Sajeev Thomas as the secretary. Under the leadership of Fr. Tony and Mr. Sajeev, the club is taking shape. The club is being supported by the County Council and Leinster Cricket. It is hoped that they will enter into the league and play matches by next year. Cricket development officer and former Ireland player, Reinhardt Strydom is helping out in the formation along with the support from Leinster Cricket development officer, Brian O'Rourke, Fingal Sports officer, Niall McGuirk and Gerry Fitzgerald, Parks Superintendent, with the Council’s Parks Division. Swords Cricket club has been allocated a training ground at Newbridge House in Donabate and they are planning to start training by early April. The new club constantly endeavours to make cricket healthy, competitive and safe and a wholesome experience that everyone enjoy and cherish. They constantly strive to excel in developing, organising, and promoting the game of cricket and its infrastructure in Swords and surrounding areas.

Heffernan A steady stream of cars makes our conversation disjointed, but James has time for everyone. “The people who work here are nice you see, and the people who come in here are nice. Most people are good and then it’s how you treat them.” Without exception, every visitor is treated with respect. Looking for a scoop on people attempting to discard unusual items is met with James’s characteristic stoicism, “no, I never found anything strange.” Asked if anyone has tried to lie about what they’re dumping, James replies, “yeah well, you get the odd one, but it’s very odd. Most people find it hard to lie, they stutter a bit. And if you’ve any doubt you just pull them in,” he says. As he nears retirement, James’s soft Northern lilt is clearly audible. He was born in Downpatrick and spent time working in London in the ‘60s. “The sixties was the greatest time. You could have bought a house in London with two years wages.” James left London in the
“The people who work here are nice you see, and the people who come in here are nice. Most people are good and then it’s how you treat them.” - James McKay late ‘60s, settling in Skerries with his wife Ann. He is interested in people without being intrusive. He is sensitive to the harsh economic climate and gently asks a customer if he is still working?’ This elicits a sigh followed by a comment of ‘keeping the devil from the door.’ As James responds that this is ‘the main thing’, the customer drives into the centre his troubles shared. James describes how changes in recycling behaviour reflect the recessionary times we live in. “There’s not as much bulky stuff coming in any more. People are hanging on to it, there was a time you couldn’t get near the wall where furniture was left,” he said.
Other exchanges between James and his customers are humorous. “That boy can nearly drive,”James teases a man whose dog sits proudly beside him. “What bin will I put him in?” the man replies. “Ah now, don’t say that,” laughs James, “he’s looking at you.” James’s conversation is peppered with ‘good man… good girl… and thank you.’ He is gentle and courteous, but no-one will slip through without paying the required fee. Many items, such as glass, plastic, paper and clothes are free to drop off, but some others such as garden waste and bulky waste require a minimum payment. In his free time, James is an avid golfer and a member of Balcarrick Golf Club playing off a handicap of 22. It’s a passion he shares with his wife Ann. As he nears retirement, despite enjoying his job, James looks forward to playing more golf and having more time in his garden. There is no doubt that when he locks the door of his hut for the last time, James will be sorely missed by a large number of people.

By Sinead Walsh helping us to put this programme in place. We are very grateful to them for all her support,” said Anne Marie Hennigan, Proimhoide. She continued, “It was our pleasure to welcome Dorothy Conaghan to the school in January. Dorothy has visited many school string projects in USA, as a guest of the New Jersey Symphony outreach, and consults to many schools countrywide on behalf of the National Concert Hall Learn and Explore. For over 25 years, she lectured in Musicianship in the DIT and conducted a workshop with 6th class, who thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Dorothy certainly inspired all to make this programme happen. The school has had the pleasure of visiting The National Concert Hall on many occasions, the last visit was in January for “Music in the Classroom.” Fundraising is required to make this happen and is now underway. Anne Marie told the County Leader, “Thanks to our grandparents, our local Credit Union and a “Fairy Godmother”, we have funding for nine violins so far and a promise of more to come. Our Parents Council organised a Quiz Night in Donabate Golf Club on Wednesday 16th March at 8.30pm to raise funds to pay the Music Teacher. “Our primary aim is to ensure that children learn to love music and acquire basic skills. This project is a serious undertaking for the school but with everyone's support I am confident that we will achieve this wonderful goal,” concluded Anne Marie.

Aoíbhe Devlin - Balbriggan Twenty year old Aoíbhe Devlin from Balbriggan is our next contestant to enter the Dublin Rose 2011. Aoíbhe is the eldest of two children and has one brother, Hugh. Her mum, Geraldine and father, Hugh have always been very supportive of her in all the decisions she has made in her life. Her dad is the proprietor of ‘Cycle and Angling Store’, in Balbriggan and is her sponsor for the competition. Aoíbhe attended St Oliver Plunkett's Primary School in Balrothery and then went on to attend Loreto Secondary School in Balbriggan. She took part in many plays and events while in Loreto and was also a dancer in the Billie Barry Stage School. After secondary school, Aoíbhe went on to the LA Make-Up Academy qualifying as a make-up artist and specialising in occasional and bridal make-up. Aoíbhe currently works for Yves Saint Laurent in Dublin Airport and is also studying for a BA in Marketing with Event Management Honours Degree. Aoíbhe is no stranger to the limelight and is the current Miss Fingal. She has a passion for helping out in the community and participates in numerous events to raise money for charities within the local community and nationwide and she is currently working on a project to help others. Aoíbhe told the County Leader, “I have been involved in charity for a long time now. It started through my grandfather, Hugh Devlin, who was involved with the Irish Guide Dogs. He was a poet and a writer and he was also a big part of my life. I went to his writers' group every Saturday and when he passed away, I wrote some of my own poems. I have a great interest in helping people and am working towards going on a project this July to Thailand, to a little remote village called Chumpton. I will be helping to teach orphans English. I have wanted to do it for a long time and feel I’m mature enough and ready for this challenge now.” But it doesn't stop there for Aoíbhe. She is in the process of organising a Fashion Show in Skerries Rugby Club on May 27th, to raise funds for the trip to Thailand. She will also be running a 'Pamper Me Night' on March 31st in order to help raise funds for Console, another charity close to her heart. Aoíbhe continued, “I am very happy to be involved in the Rose of Tralee festival this year as I feel it's a good time in my life now to do it. Not only will it help me to be an ambassador for the charities that are close to my heart, but I can get involved with the charities the festival is involved in. I am ready to embrace this once in a lifetime experience and make friends for life.”

Newly elected Labour Party TD, Brendan Ryan has sent heartiest congratulations to the Irish cricket team on their famous victory over England in the Cricket World Cup recently. “This record achieving victory surpassed previous victories, such as beating the West Indies in Belfast a number of years ago and Pakistan in the last World Cup series,” said Ryan. The achievement of Kevin O’Brien in setting a record for the fastest century ever scored in a world cup series was pivotal to the victory. However the victory could not have been achieved without the all-round support of all the other members of the team. Ryan continued, “The development of cricket in Ireland, north and south, in recent years is an example of what Irish people can achieve when they are given the opportunity and they put their minds to it. The Irish cricket team has given a sense of pride and a boost to the morale of everyone in Ireland by virtue of this victory.”

Funding Available For Suitable Projects In Skerries In 2008, Skerries Community Association (SCA) was approached by a local benefactor and asked to administer a bequest. This is a call for applications and relates to projects which will take place over the next 12 months. The aim of the fund is to assist selected local community projects that might not otherwise have the resources to be undertaken. Local community groups are invited to apply for funding for specific projects that meet certain criteria. The project to be completed within a 12 month period, should funding be approved and will be of benefit to the community in and around Skerries. It must fall within any or all of the following target areas youth, sports, the local
community and the environment. The project would require a fund allocation of not more that €2000, which is
the maximum funding that will be allocated from the fund in any one year. Applications for funding should be in written form,

By Bob McKenzie town. Half a dozen bands performed to their enthusiastic punters, with many genres covered. The bands enthusiastically covered Heavy metal, Rap, Rock and Pop to keep the crowd swaying and dancing over the two hour duration of the gig. The ‘Band Night’ is part of the process of getting young adults involved in something other than lurking around the town, which was causing serious anti social behaviour. Giving teens projects and skills can only help with their development and is proving to be a hit, not only with the participants, but with the community in general, evidenced by such great support for the efforts of the youngsters. Daze Boyz, Demented, What About Us? Antelope, Gun Runner, The Notas and DJ Clean Up, all performed on the night, with the proceeds going to the Balbriggan Youth Service to fund future projects. Sharon Cumiskey from the Balbriggan Youth service told the County Leader, “The young people of Balbriggan had absolutely nothing to do in their free time and they came to us , asking for our help to organise something for them. do is to give young people a safe place to go, meet and interact with other young people. It helps to divert them away from anti-social behaviour, taking the boredom out of things and keeping their interest,” she said.

Student Enterprise Awards At Colaiste Choilm There was no sign of a recession in Colaiste Choilm in Swords last week, as the school held its second Student Enterprise Awards school final, involving 120 second year students. This is the school’s sixth year in the event, and with 180 students setting up 35 mini-companies, it is the largest entrant in the country. The panel of judges for the day comprised of trustee representatives, past pupils and members of the local business community. Students exhibited their work in the school gymnasium and were interviewed by the judges concerning their project and business report. Prizes were presented to first, second and third in each class, followed by the Noel Murray Hession Award for Personal Development through Enterprise, an overall runner-up and finally the overall winner was presented with the Pat Coyle Cup for Enterprise. A special day was made a very special day, when a new award was presented. The Larry McGuinness
Award for Social Responsibility and Fairness in Business was presented to the group who displayed the best team work and actively displayed a social conscience in their work. The award was named after Larry McGuinness who taught for over 39 years in Colaiste Choilm and who sadly passed away last year. Larry was an active member of the trade union movement for many years and a passionate believer in the social role of business in society, perhaps best summed up by Henry Ford who said that a business which makes nothing but money is a poor business. The overall runner up and overall winners from the school finals will be proceeding to the regional final. The Fingal Student Enterprise Programme is run by the Fingal County Enterprise Board and involves 15 secondary schools and 10 primary schools this year. The 10th anniversary of the Fingal Student Enterprise Awards will be marked at the County Final on March 16th at the Crowne Plaza Blanchardstown.

North County Leader’s Weekly Helpful Guide For Jobseekers
Overqualified! Writes Siobhán Kinsella Competition for roles has never been as high and there appears to be a misconception with employers that they can have the best calibre applications possible. This is not the case, the situation is still and will always be that the skills of the available labour force never exactly match the skills required in Industry. Therefore you will always have competition for talent. It is however soul destroying when you just want to work even in a role which you are overqualified. You are 100% committed to making a positive impact anywhere you work regardless of role or salary but you can’t get an interview. It is important to understand why. H i r i n g
someone overqualified for your vacant role has traditionally been seen as a bad idea for recruiters / employers. The feeling is that the person will be bored, they will become disengaged or resentful and it will not end well. Considering in Ireland employers were forced to cut more deeply than they wanted, hiring overqualified candidates can be a real bonus for future growth. The employer may not have the resources to recruit at your level now but should look to future growth and succession planning. You can be a real asset to the future of said company, why won’t they listen. If you are applying for a role for which you are overqualified you need to articulate why you are the best person for the job in your cover letter. Be mindful not to the arrogant about your experience but clearly articulate that you know what you are doing in applying and you know the salary. Also
define the benefits you feel your experience could bring to the company. Sometimes you need to assume responsibility for educating the employer when it means achieving your ultimate goal. The best of luck Siobhan Kinsella is Manager of CPL and Flexsource Solutions with responsibility for the Fingal area. She is a Director of Fingal Dublin Chamber of Commerce & Drinan Enterprise centre. Siobhan is also an active member of the Rotary Club of Dublin Fingal
