Don’t Become A Statistic This Halloween! H

alloween is the time of the year that many parents dread. The kids are full of excitement and they exude an air of invincibility about them. Year after year we hear of severe hand or facial injuries sustained by young and not so young children at Halloween. Many of these injuries are caused by by illegal fireworks and bangers, which are unregulated and are generally unsafe and have been bought on the black market for exuberant prices. They are not regulated and don’t conform to standards and are cheap, smuggled goods. It is not uncommon for fingers to be severed by the force of a banger held in the hand. The importance of parental guidance cannot be overestimated in this regard. The County Leader spoke to members of Swords Youth Service who were quick to advise youngsters of the dangers associated with fireworks and bangers. One of them, Thomas McDonagh explained what happens at a bonfire. “Kids carry flammable items from

one of the lads on the neck. It clung to him, but he wasn’t badly hurt, but he could have been - he was lucky,” said Thomas. The following year, there was a fireworks display on the green beside St Colmcille’s GAA pitch and it was safe and great fun,” said Thomas. This story certainly resonates with Swords Fire Station officer, John McNally who spoke to the County Leader about some horrific injuries he has witnessed at Halloween. “I remember the worst injury I saw was to a young boy, aged about nine. It happened about 15 years ago and a banger exploded and the fire hit him in the face. Unfortunately, he lost his eye in the incident, despite all of our best efforts.” John went on to explain the ease at which an eye can be lost. “Vitreous Humour is a gel or fluid in the eye and is the only fluid in the body that does not replace itself - hence any injury in that department will most likely lead to the eye being damaged beyond repair,” said John chillingly. “The normal injury when an unregulated banger explodes in a child’s hand is the loss or severe injury to the hand, particularly the thumb. Imagine trying to live life without your thumb there would be no more X Box games or Playstations.” As Adam Logue from Swords Youth Service explained, “Nobody sets Pictured are members of Swords Youth Service, Thomas McDonagh, Hannah Reel, Chris Barker and Adam Logue, who were vocal in their advice to youngsters to be vigilant this out to be malicious, its just youngsters being Halloween. excited, but they need to building sites, like plastic and other dangerous items be extra vigilant and take nothing for granted.” - as much as they can get their hands on. First Ever Rush Historical Walk Rush Historical Society recently celebrated its first ever historical walk - something which may come as a surprise given the rich history in the area. Local historian, Kevin Thorp from the Rush Historical

By Jennifer McShane Society, told the County Leader that it was “an experiment of sorts” taken to see how the whole thing would go. “It went really well,” he said. “We’d never organised

a walk before so we weren’t sure what the turnout would be like.” The society managed to assemble together the crème de la crème of local historians (12 of them to be exact) to inform the 60 participants all about the historical landmarks in the area. “It was a real eye-opener,

there were landmarks here that even I didn’t know about!” “All in all, it was a very informative and enjoyable day, where we learned that our previous knowledge of Rush was not as comprehensive as we had believed. It was an excellent illustration of 12 heads being

better than one,” he said. The Historical Society Secretary, Margaret McCannMoore is to be complimented for all the hard work she put in to make the day so memorable and the society looks forward to the walk being an annual event from now on.

Joint Policing Committee Meeting In Rush The Skerries, Rush, Lusk, Garristown, Ballyboughal and Naul areas held a Fingal Joint Policing Committee (JPC) meeting in Rush recently. The purpose of the JPC is to provide a forum for An Garda Síochána, the Local Authority Members and community interests, to get together in a regular and structured manner. The JPC are keen to underline the three way relationship between the Community, the County Council and the Gardaí

By Peter Kearney in this process. “90 per cent of crimes are solved through the assistance of the public,” said Chief Superintendent Gerry Phillips, of the Dublin Metropolitan Region North (DMRN). He added that the Gardaí are reliant on this “continuing cooperation.” As the main issues of concern are “issues of anti-social behaviour” he encourages residents to set up residents associations and to join Neighbour

Watch associations. The Gardaí and The County Council can be of assis-

tance to residents in doing so. He also encourages parents to “know where your children and teenagers are” at all times. In order to create greater awareness, the JPC are keen to link up

with groups who may assist in publicising future meetings through local networks. Groups interested in doing so can contact Martina O' Connor at the Fingal Development Board.

Pictured here from L-R are: Arminda Simao, Sarah and Warren Duku, Ayo Yusuf and Emilia Marchelewska, Project Leader at Cairde Balbriggan ITCE at the recent Cairde Fair in Pic: RN Balbriggan.

Locals were invited to find out what Balbriggan had to offer at the recent Living in Balbriggan Fair. The event took place in Old St.George’s School on Hampton Street and its aim was to showcase the various services, clubs, societies and groups around Balbriggan. Over 400 residents came along on the day to see what was on offer. The local groups, clubs and services displayed information and offered advice on volunteering and job and training opportunities. Balbriggan & District Chamber of Commerce, Bereave by Suicide Support

Service, Citizen Information Centre and the Community Policing Forum are only a few names from the long list of local organisations involved in the day. “It is an integration initiative, a common experience that will continue. The residents were happy as they could meet each other. Members of different communities shared their experience and got advice. We have got the support from all local groups. I think we achieved all our goals and the fair was a great success.” said Emilia Marchelewska, the cocoordinator of Cairde’s ITCEI Practical Leadership Program.

Balrothery Teenage Super Heroes! Two students from Skerries Community College have won the top prize in the SuperHero 2011 Awards recently Last February, brothers Juvan and Christivan Maritz applied and received a small grant of €250 to embark on a community project that will make a difference to their community. The aim of this project was to create awareness of the environment by setting up a community project in Balruddery Wood, Balrothery. The project was called “TreeCops” and was aimed at educating local children and young people to care for the

newly planted trees in their housing estate. They got local businesses involved that sponsored this event. The Balbriggan Community Gardai came out for the afternoon and had a chat with local residents. Children were taught the importance of caring for their environment and a ceremonial tree was planted as part of the project and this tree still grows proudly on the green of the estate. During the summer months

the benefits of the project could be seen as neighbours all came together and kept an eye on the newly planted trees. All the children were self proclaimed “TreeCops” and guarded the estate against vandalism. The TreeCops project was competing nationally against 10 other projects. Juvan and Christivan received the final winning award of €500 for their efforts. The brothers are to share this award and when asked what they will do with the prize money they declared that they want to spend half of it towards the continuation of the TreeCops project in 2012 and the other half to spend on a visit to their family in their country of birth, S o u t h Africa.

Rush Secondary School Celebrates Jubilee 50th year jubilee celebrations continued at St. Joseph’s Rush with an Open Day recently. present students and staff as well as the blessing of the memorial garden. The highlight of the day was the unveiling of Paul Flynn’s “Tree of Life” by Mayor Gerry McGuire. The sculptor represents 50 years of the school’s existence. After holding an “ideas competition” in the school, the artist stayed “true to the student ideas” in his design. The sculpture depicts a boy and girl, under the tree, to represent the students. The 50 years are represented by 50 palm prints, of students and staff past and present. A truly symbolic and appropriate piece of art as well as a symbolic day.

A local youth theatre group returns for its annual Halloween show in St. Mary’s Secondary School, Baldoyle with their production of ‘The Panto of the Opera’. They would like to invite audiences to join them at the ‘Paris Opera House’ in 1881, where the new owner finds out her business is being run by a mysterious ghost... A night of fun and frights for all the family, this show is perfect entertainment for the Halloween midterm break. The show has everything you would expect from a pantomime - great songs, great laughs, a pantomime dame, even a pantomime horse! - with the added addition of some Halloween scares... As always, audiences young and old are encouraged to dress up in Halloween costume, as there will be prizes for the best audience costume at each performance. The Panto of the Opera runs at St. Mary’s Secondary School, Baldoyle, from 2nd until 4th November.

Fingal Dublin Chamber will host a Gala Awards Presentation Evening for the Fingal Business Excellence Awards at the Crowne Plaza, Northwood on Friday, 4th November next. North County Leader Newspaper will sponsor the Excellence in Retail Independent Sector Award and is delighted to act as sponsor for this crucially important sector. These awards are eagerly awaited each year and the prizes are very coveted by the winners. North County Leader fully understands the importance of the retail sector in our efforts to kick start the economy. This sector is widely seen as the one which will be the main driver in our economy and its importance cannot be overstated. Whilst the export business has been booming, it is the domestic retail market that is viewed as the real indicator of true economic growth. It has been a particularly difficult time for retailers, as they continue to provide the kind of top class service which will attract shoppers into their premises, so hopefully these awards will have a positive effect on their efforts at a local level at least. North County Leader will sponsor the Customer Service Excellence Award - Retail Independent Sector at the Fingal Business Excellence Awards, which will take place at the Crowne Plaza, Northwood on Friday 4th November next. Local Clubs To Get Pitches In Swords Five playing pitches at Ridgewood in Swords will be allocated to local clubs soon as the council reaches the final stages of negotiations with the developer to take the pitches in charge. Cllr David McGuinness ( FF) asked for a progress report on the pitches and argued for their allocation to St Finian's GAA Club and River Valley Rangers FC, two clubs he said had “served their local community so well since the early eighties.” The council said it was in the final stages of taking the pitches at Ridgewood in charge. It said it anticipated five pitches becoming available for allocation 'during autumn', consisting of one full-size GAA pitch, two full-size soccer pitches and two junior pitches. The council said it intended to allocate the pitches to local clubs for the 2011/ 2012 season using the normal criteria for pitch allocation. The council also noted that planning permission has been granted at the same site for proposed dressing room facilities which should be delivered early next year.

By Patrick Finnegan Enterprising lady, Edel McGuinness has decided to ‘buck the trend’ and set up business in Balbriggan. Last July, Edel (25) decided she had enough of working for other people and set up her own business, EMG Property Consultants on Dublin Street in Balbriggan. Edel studied at university in Galway for four years and got a degree in Property Economics. Armed with this qualification, she worked in Stamullen for an estate agent, eventually moving to Balbriggan and taking up a position with a leading estate agent in the town, extending her knowledge of the industry all the time. Edel, who has an extensive knowledge of the local property market, spoke to the County Leader about her passion for property. “When I was at school, I worked for estate agents in Drogheda and Ashbourne, so it has always been a passion of mine to pursue a career in the property business, just as some of my family members have done. Its in the blood,” she laughs. EMG Property Consultants opened on 4th July last and in the less than four months since opening, Edel has seen the business growing steadily and is delighted with its upward curve. “We deal with residential, commercial, with sales and rentals of both. Place candles around the room. If you do not plan on lighting a fire put them inside your fireplace. Candles will instantly create a cosy Winter atmosphere. Scented candles are a good investment because not only will the flicker create an warm glowing atmosphere, the scent will enhance the Winter mood. If you plan on purchasing scented candles make sure they have a spicy or citrus smell. Scents such as Cinnamon or Pine are the best for Winter time.

Search The Room Make sure to scrutinise the room for objects that appear to be cold , unwelcoming or summer like. For example replace your ceramic candle sticks that have a Summer flower design for bronze or gold ones. It is also important to put cushions or throws on objects made of metal or wood. It will stop them seeming harsh or cold and will allow them to blend in with the rest of the Winter theme.

Re-arrange The Furniture The sofas and seating arrangements should be based around the source of light or heat in the room. Arrange the sofas facing the fireplace. Even if your not planning on using the fireplace for fires, candles will still create a warm atmosphere.

North County Living by Caroline Heffernan

A Lifetime On Lifeboats To the general public, the initials RNLI do not require explanation as they are instantly synonymous with lifeboats and rescue at sea. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution was founded as a charity in 1824 to protect the coastlines of Great Britain, Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. From their impressive, purpose built base in Airside, Swords the 35 full time staff co-ordinate the 1,500 crew volunteers and over 2,000 fundraising volunteers connected with the 43 stations across Ireland. The RNLI have a college in Poole in Dorset and intensive training is provided there. It has a massive pool and is right on the harbour with teaching lifeboats going up and down all day. Volunteers are probationary crew for about a year and won't get near a call out in that time. They make a pretty strong investment in their crew and they give years of service so it works well for everybody. Lifeboat crew volunteer, Conor Walsh is a trained mechanic, who began volunteering with the lifeboat crew in Skerries when he was 19. “I'm senior helm there now which is like the coxswain or pilot of the boat. I'm 25 years on the crew, I can't believe it, the time has gone so fast.” Conor began working as a technician with the RNLI in 1995 and is now maintenance manager for the whole of Ireland. “My job is to make sure all maintenance and repairs are carried out for all the lifeboats and the equipment such as tractors, trailers and kit as they always have to be in top condition.” The link between volunteering on a crew and working with the RNLI professionally fits very naturally. In addition to Conor, David Courtney, who recently retired from Skerries lifeboat crew works as a shore manager and Sean Reilly, an RNLI technician is on the Clogherhead crew. Neville Murphy is a winch man on the helicopter Coast Guard and is a volunteer on the Dunmore East crew. The Irish Coast Guard service is the statutory agency that co-ordinates marine rescue but they work very closely with the RNLI. “When you pick up the phone and dial 999 and say 'I see someone in difficulty, or I am in difficulty on the water', you get through to the Coastguard. They look at their declared search and rescue resources in the area such as the four helicopters based around the coast line, the proximity of RNLI lifeboats and other community rescue boats and decide which to deploy in the circumstances. If they request the RNLI to launch it can be done

in a matter of seconds. Different lifeboats are used in different circumstances. “We have inshore lifeboats which can search close to the shoreline,” Conor says. “There are a lot of leisure boats going up and down the East Coast from Malahide Marina to Skerries and there is also a lot of marine leisure activity in the area. We've rescued kids from inflatable boats or people cut off from the tide on the islands off Skerries. It's fantastic to see the smile on someone's face when they're relieved to be rescued,” he says. “We put our all-weather lifeboats in areas where the conditions can be very challenging like around the Aran Islands which are right on the Atlantic. These lifeboats can go up to a hundred miles out from the shore and be at sea for hours. Busy ports, such as Dun Laoghaire and Howth have both all-weather and inshore lifeboats.” Sadly one of the worst tragedies along our coastline that featured in our news bulletins happened in Skerries in April this year with the loss of David Gilsenan and Ronan Browne. “It's very fresh, I knew David very well,” Conor says. “It was tough. We had a job to do while being conscious that we were dealing with friends who were missing and families that we knew.” The community support was fantastic. Out of the blue thousands were raised for the search. Total strangers came along with soup and sandwiches, people were out in their fishing boats and other vessels searching and it really brought everyone together.” The RNLI crew room provided a space for the families to assemble. “It was vital,” says Conor. “They needed somewhere to be together where they could receive updates on the search at all times.” The donations that were so forthcoming in Skerries this year are what have kept the RNLI in existence for 187 years. “The majority of our money comes from fundraising events such as flag days, coffee mornings, table quizzes and legacies,” Conor says. “People are very generous and they know the money is being spent on lifeboats and saving people at sea.” “People may have a personal reason for doing this and they may tell us or they may prefer to keep it private. We feel it's very important as a charity that we're not charging a fee for what we do. It's not our ethos and it's great to be able to say we're a charity that saves lives at sea.” For further information on how to support the RNLI please contact 1800 789 589 or www.rnli.ie.

tree trimming party is a lovely way to celebrate the holidays. For this party you are inviting your guests to come over and help decorate your tree (put the lights on first, they are always a big hassle). Another fun party to have, especially with kids is a craft party. Select a Christmas themed craft to do and have everyone do this project. It can be a lot of fun for everyone to make ornaments or holiday decorations. Another great idea for a holiday party is to hold a Christmas cookie exchange party. For this party every guest brings one batch of Christmas cookies.

Robbie Carr, from Balscadden is an athlete on the way up. He is a member of Skerries Tennis Club, where he won the Mens Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles recently. He also won the East of Ireland Class C doubles with partner, Eddie Fynes. Amazingly, he also won the National Powerlifting Championsip in the under 19 category. He is a former pupil of Balscadden National School and is pictured here with some of the trophies he won this year. He's certainly one to watch for the future.

A disgruntled Marks and Spencer customer was surprised when a customer service adviser complied with his cheeky request for a drawing of a 'smiley dinosaur'. He was mistakenly charged and received a reply with the picture and giftcard for the inconvenience.

Portmarnock Dramatic Society Portmarnock Music and Dramatic Society will stage ‘All In Favour Said No!’ from November 9th-12th in the Portmarnock Sports and Leisure Centre. The latest play is one of a long line of popular plays put on by the drama group. Written by Bernard Farrell, the play is a hilarious yet scathing look at industrial relations and the people within them. Auditions for the play took place at St Helen’s Junior National School, after which the parts were chosen. It follows Portmarnock’s last winter drama, Tolka Row, which was staged at the same PSLC venue and garnered great praise. We’re sure the latest play will be a great success when it makes its debut in early November.

HOROSCOPES AQUARIUS

Jan 20 - Feb 18

For some time you’ve been juggling obligations involving everything from career and family to long-term security. As the week begins, sudden shifts in circumstances take over, and force an extensive review - for the better.

PISCES

Feb 19 - Mar 20

You begin the week thinking that you’ve once again been cornered into a situation in which you just don’t want to be. But events mark a turning point for everyone - even changes in circumstances for some.

ARIES

Mar 21 - Apr 20

If this unsettling week is too draining, reflect on times in the past when you’ve felt similarly stressed. While you knew changes were inevitable, you were still rattled. But you thrived, and you will this time, too.

TAURUS

Apr 21 - May 20

While you can’t stop thinking this week, try to suspend making judgements until after Wednesday - and use the time to explore all options. Others may complain, but now is the time to think of yourself first.

Gemini

Jun 21 - Jul 22

By now you’ve become accustomed to making decisions, only to have them swept aside by sudden changes in circumstances or others’ whims. You can now begin to relax, for all this is about to change for the better.

Leo

Jul 23 - Aug 23

Tantalising good ideas or offers are still in the air, but you’re beginning to get nervous. You’d like to know where others stand and to have things settled. Don’t hurry this process too much for now, however.

Virgo

Aug 24 - Sep 22

Having been overwhelmed by offers that are wonderful as they are disruptive, you’re longing for a chance to put things in order. This week you get it - although not right away, and a liitle patience will be needed.

Libra

Oct 23 - Nov 22

You’ve been complaining because those closest - at home or at work - have been avoiding both discussing and making crucial decisions. Now you get what you want, except it could be more than you bargained for.

Sagittarius

Nov 23 - Dec 21

You’re in an extraordinary position: while you benefit from thrilling developments, you are not in control of decisions. The obvious solution would be to discuss issues - even if you fear what you might hear.

Capricorn
