People Power Wins Out! Kennedy Sniffs Opportunity The decision of the Constituency Commission to reunite Swords, Rolestown, St Margaret’s and Portmarnock back to their former base has been widely welcomed and is set to change the political landscape in the North County. It is also a clear indication of the influential effect that people power has on decisions at both national and local level. The new constituency will be a five seater and will be named Dublin Fingal. Of course the name Dublin Fingal is not new. It was first proposed by the late John Boland, the former local Fine Gael TD and Minister in 1980. The changes have really energised local politicians and none more so than former Fianna Fail TD and one time poll topper, Michael Kennedy. He, along with Cllr Darragh Butler (FF) have been a very visible force in fighting for the reunification of the constituency. An upbeat Kennedy now sees a return to Dail Eireann as a distinct possibility. He told the County Leader, “I was out and
By Patrick Finnegan about in Swords last Thursday and I was heartened by the number of people who stopped me and said they were looking forward to seeing me back as a Dail deputy. I’m really looking forward to seeking the votes of the residents of Dublin Fingal at the next general election. I was very honoured to be a TD in the last Dail and I am excited by the prospect of representing the constituency in the next Dail. In welcoming the change, he said he felt very strongly about the removal of areas like River Valley in particular, where he always polled well, also Knocksedan, Rolestown and his home town of Portmarnock, as instrumental in the loss of his Dail seat at the last general election. Of the 533 submissions received by the Commission, the largest number received on any one issue related to Swords. In all of these submissions, it was suggested
that Swords and its environs should be in one constituency. Cllr Darragh Butler told the County Leader, “I am delighted that common sense has prevailed and that the ludicrous decision made by the previous Constituency Commission to split Swords has been reversed. I would also like to thank Sandra White who took our petition door to door along the Brackenstown Road and Park Avenue - they could not vote in the school directly across the road from them and instead had to get in their cars and drive to River Valley. Portmarnock based Labour councillor, Peter Coyle also welcomed the return of Portmarnock to the fold and said, “Portmarnock was lost in Dublin North East. I’m considering my future and will review my situation. I like local politics and am happy at local level,” he said. His party colleague, Deputy Brendan Ryan (LAB), has wholeheartedly welcomed the reunification of Swords within a new ‘Dublin Fingal’ constituency. The new Dublin
Councillor Darragh Butler and Michael Kennedy are very pleased about the Constituency Commission's changes.
Fingal constituency certainly makes more sense than the ludicrous change by the previous Constituency Commission.” Alan Farrell (FG) said, “I am pleased that the Commission has taken account the submissions of hundreds of residents, whose wishes were to have the constituency reunited.” Fianna Fáil Senator, Darragh O’Brien said, “I very much welcome the Report. I welcome the fact that Portmarnock, Balgriffin and neighbouring areas will also be returned to Dublin North. I would like to
commend the hundreds of people, in particular those in the Swords area, who made submissions to the Commission to reunite Swords and to seek for Portmarnock and surrounding areas to be returned to the one constituency.” The next general election is one that is certain to breathe oxygen into the campaigns of prospective candidates and it looks odds on that the changes will generate a freshness and excitement among our new electorate, with an uncertain outcome at the end of it.
Recognition For Former Cathaoirligh Well Received A presentation of medals of recognition for Cathaoirligh and County Mayors took place in County Hall, Swords on Friday last. This novel idea was the brainchild of County Mayor, Cllr Gerry McGuire, who wanted to recognise the contribution of these people. He made the presentations, in what was his last official duty as Mayor. He told the County Leader, “Having served as Mayor for the past year, I have come to know the sacrifices that are involved. The role of a councillor is very demanding and that of a mayor, so much more. It involves giving up weekends, hobbies, family and in many cases, having an understanding wife. The presentation of medals is a practice in other local authority areas and I thought it would be an appropriate thing to remember people who played such an important role in fashioning our community,” he said.
McGuire praised the recipients as wonderful ambassadors for the county, who sometimes assume the role of diplomats when greeting foreign dignitaries to the area. Between them, they have in excess of 300 years of service,” he said. The medals are round silver ones and have the Fingal crest with the names and years of office on them. The event was very well attended and was greeted with universal praise by all concerned. Ciaran Byrne told the County Leader, “Being Mayor is a great honour and often times is the pinnacle of a person’s career in politics. It’s fitting that it should be commemorated in such a way,” he said. The first Cathaoirleach was Sean Ryan in 1994 who spoke about the” rigours of having to travel to O’Connell Street to conduct the business of the region.” He praised subsequent Cathaoirligh and Mayors for their
great and selfless work. Cathal Boland and Joan Maher are the only members to hold the office of Cathaoirleach on two separate occasions. The role of County Mayor was established in 2006-2007 and the first person to hold this office was Joe Corr. All in all, this initiative was very well received and gave the holders of these offices an opportunity to meet each other and to have a social evening where, no doubt, many old stories and events were resurrected and old political rivalries were sidelined, as pleasant memories were revived. Pictured at the presentation of commemorative medals to former Cathaoirligh and County Mayors at County Hall, Swords last Friday are, Ned Ryan, Alan Farrell, Sean Ryan, County Mayor Gerry McGuire, Susie Manson (who represented her late grandfather, Cyril Gallagher), Ciaran Byrne, Joan Maher, Peter Coyle, Joe Corr, Michael Kennedy, Cathal Boland and Tom Kelleher.

Olympics At Skerries School The children of Skerries Educate Together National School finally held their first ever Olympic Games on Monday 18th June last. Previously postponed due to bad weather, students, parents and teachers enjoyed a fun filled day with lots of sunshine.
The day began with the Opening Ceremony, where each child represented a country of their choice by carrying its flag. There were lots of team games and fun challenges from early morning until 2pm. The day was completed by the highly anticipated,
‘Teachers v Students’ football game which was played in very good spirits. The obstacle course, Poc Fada, coconut shy, shoot the hoops, disco dancing, javelin, discus throw, sack races all proved very popular. In full Olympic style, the grounds of the

school were converted into an Olympic Village, where the athletes had time to rest and relax. The organising committee would like to thank parents and staff who made it a memorable day for the students of the school. Educate Together would also like to thank Skerries Harps GAA Club for providing some of the funfair stalls.

Swords Girl Takes Home Double Gold By Patrick Finnegan Twelve year old Swords schoolgirl, Rebecca Power is surely destined for a glittering career in sport. Rebecca, whose primary sporting interest is in skiing, took up the Javelin as a link sport to keep her fit for winter skiing. What is truly amazing is that she won the under 16 Javelin competition at the recent Dublin Community Games and she’s only 12. She entered the under 16 competition only because there was
no under 13 competition. She had already won the Dublin title for athletics clubs earlier, thus making it a golden double for this remarkable Swords girl. Now she’s planning an assault on the All-Ireland Under 13 Javelin title at Tullamore next month. Rebecca trains with Lambay Sports Academy in Donabate and is coached by Gerry Ronan and her dad, Eugene and she trains most days. We have no doubt that she will excel in Tullamore and has a great chance of bringing further silverware to Swords. Rebecca, who is a pupil at St Cronan’s SNS in Swords is already a ski racer and represented Ireland in Italy earlier in the year.
Pupils from Skerries Educate Together National School are pictured prior to their football match against the teachers (in orange vests) as part of their Olympic day.

Balbriggan School Demands Free Guidance And Counselling The Parents’ Council of Balbriggan Community College, together with Ann Mannion, their Career Guidance/Counsellor are calling on Minister for Education, Ruairi Quinn to guarantee appropriate Guidance in their school. A total of 600 signed postcards were delivered to the Minister’s office in the Dail, with a call to make Guidance and Counselling ‘ex quota’. Representatives of the Parents’ Council, Rose Carter and Jackie Kettle told the County Leader, “The northern part of the county has experienced Increased youth population, increased unemployment, low levels of service provision, with an increasingly diverse population. The key to ensuring that all the communities within this area have equal access to opportunities now and in the future is Education.” “This is now under severe threat following recent changes which have almost gone unnoticed by the public.
What’s another cut? The public have reached saturation point, but alarmingly are in danger of losing the next generation of young people unless this is reversed,” they said. Recent changes in allocation of resources for 2012-2013 have targeted schools which provide a broad, inclusive education. Schools must now find the required hours within their timetable for Guidance provision. Prior to this, Guidance and Counselling was guaranteed for our students as it was “ex quota”. This is a crisis for schools. “This penalises our students by reducing the free Guidance and Counselling service. This service is not a luxury. It is a necessity.” The Parents’ Council call on all parents to contact their elected representatives, both at local and national level, and lobby for your son’s/daughter’s right to appropriate Guidance and Counselling, as is their legal right. Balbriggan Community College students, accompanied by Ann Mannion, Guidance Counsellor and members of the Parent's Council, Rose Carter, Theresa Moore, Paula Casey, Leena O'Byrne and Catriona O'Reilly are pictured with the postcards they sent to Minister Quinn, calling for Guidance and Counselling to be made 'ex quota'

Patrick Prendergast. The students also met guest speaker John Lonergan who is former Governor of Mountjoy. Following the event, principal Patricia Hayden said, “St Joseph’s Rush began its relationship with the Trinity Access Programme in 2007. At that stage just 14 per cent of the students progressed to third level. There was a huge increase in 2011 with 75 per cent of our students then progressing to third level. The programme has been central to bringing about that improvement.” To mark the occasion the principal presented Provost of Trinity College, Patrick Prendergast with a metal sculpture of a bird taken from the St Joseph’s Golden Jubilee sculpture ‘The Tree of Life.’ In presenting the sculpture, she said: “Many hopes and dreams will be fulfilled because of TAP.”

It’s Festival Time In North County The North County is gearing itself up for some very exciting upcoming summer festivals. part of it. A committee has been formed for the activities, but the chamber are always delighted to welcome new members and you can contact them if you wish to join. Meanwhile, Rush Community Council are hard at work organising the Rush Festival 2012. The festival will take place from Friday 3rd to Monday 6th of August. After such a huge success last
year, the committee are expecting to see the festival grow. Things will open on Friday evening with a parade through the town. A festival marquee will be the hub of the entertainment hosting a comedy night, gig night and show dance over the weekend. There will be a kids fair, craft market, pony rides, treasure trail, blessing of fishing boats, 10k
run, puppet show, beach tournaments and so much more. Speaking to the County Leader, Louise O’Loughlin from Rush Community Council said: “We have a huge weekend organised, which we hope will be even bigger and better than last year. There will be a full time table of events in the coming weeks, but for now we just want to let everyone know it’s happening again and encourage them to sign up for the run.”

Balloon Tribute In Balbriggan
Pictured here are L-R: Carol Reilly and Ann Bissett at the recent Balloon Release in Balbriggan.
A balloon release recently took place in Balbriggan, as a touching tribute to those who passed away after battling cancer. Two hundred blue and pink balloons were released in aid of Balbriggan Cancer Support Group. It was a chance for everyone to remember their loved ones. “It’s a memorial release, so it’s a lovely way to remember those who have died or been effected by cancer. It is a symbol of our centre and something we
wanted to do as so many people are effected by this,” explained Laura Quinlan from Balbriggan Cancer Support Group. “The balloon release was a very emotional experience for the Balbriggan Cancer Support Group and for the local community. Many came out in support and a total of €400 was raised overall. This is the second year running that BCSG have released the balloons and it seems to be very popular. We would like to send our thanks to Balbriggan Summerfest and everyone involved for their continuous support and dedication,” she concluded.
om Stafford, who passed the reigns to his son John, Jonathan’s dad, originally opened Staffords funeral home in their first location on North Strand and nearly 60 years ago, they opened their second location 30 years ago in Maypark, Malahide Road, Donnycarney. After 20 years as a Funeral Director, Jonathan Stafford researched the benefits of building a new state-of-the art funeral home in Portmarnock. This fabulous building has been designed with not only today but also tomorrow in mind. Jonathan Stafford made sure that the ever changing requirements of the population were catered for. The building has an air of space and elegance and deciding to hold a funeral here will not cost one euro more than a regular venue. In fact, their costing procedure involves the bereaved family at a deep level because they offer so many options; the family have a major input deciding how much the funeral will cost.

Gormanston Students Celebrate Anniversary Elected by the students, the Gormanston College Students Council recently celebrated its first anniversary. This achievement reflects on a successful year spent working closely with the College and Parents Association. To mark the occasion, the Franciscan College Gormanston Parents Association and the Management of the college were delighted to present the Students Council with new Sports Equipment to a value of over €2000.
In addition to representing the views of its peers the Student Council plays an active role in promoting fund raising within the college for its nominated charity, the Jack & Jill Foundation. The council set an ambitious target of €10,000 to raise for the charity during the current school year and have exceeded their target, most recently through the help of a Monster Raffle at the College Family Fun and Sports Day. Congratulations to all involved.

A Talented Bunch In Balbriggan
Lifejacket Awareness Campaign In Skerries The Irish Coast Guard, which has volunteer stations in Skerries and beyond, recently launched a major lifejacket awareness campaign. With the summer now here and more people heading to the water, the Irish Coast Guard’s campaign ‘Get it On! Keep It On!’
focuses on people fishing from the shoreline and on small fishing boats on Irish waters including lakes, rivers and seas. While mandatory for those fishing on small boats to have their lifejacket, on it is not for those fishing from land but it is highly recommended. The availability of compact self inflating lifejackets ensure little or no impact on the ability to maintain your flexibility and
still enjoy a day’s fishing from the shoreline. Importantly when you do need it, the lifejacket will inflate and keep the user afloat until help arrives. It is equally important to keep this critical piece of lifesaving equipment well maintained. The Irish Coast Guard is responsible for the co-ordination of nearly 2,000 search and rescues on our rivers, lakes, seas, cliffs, beaches and shorelines every year.
Annual Golf Classic In Donabate Balbriggan has great talent! This is undoubtedly the conclusion of the final round of the Balbriggan’s Got Talent competition, which took place recently in The Bracken Court Hotel. Now in its fourth year, the event proved to be a marvellous showcase of local talents. Twelve talented people from Balbriggan gave it their all, hoping to claim the top prize on the night. Lauren Walsh, last year’s contest winner performed at the interval between acts and the Special Guest on the night was Sharon Gaynor from the Voice of Ireland. The level of talent on the competition stage was extremely high, so the judges Linda Martin, Orla Hopkins-Plant and Terry Quinlan had a very tough time trying to decide on the final three. Creative Awards In Rush School
New County Mayor, Cllr Cian O’Callaghan (Lab) is pictured with outgoing Mayor, Cllr Gerry McGuire after his election at County Hall, Swords last Friday.
For many months, children in St Catherine’s National School in Rush have been working on creative arts projects. Strange characters have been seen walking around the grounds and a miniature village cropped up at the back of the school. Four classes took part in the projects, which included a variety of pieces of film, photostories and art work. Recently, a ‘Creative Awards’ ceremony was held in the school hall which allowed the four classes to showcase their work to family and friends. Each class presented their project and discussed the process with the audience. Representatives from the ACAE attended and rewarded each class with a certificate of achievement and the school as a whole received the award. They were delighted with the fantastic work done by all the children and teachers. It was a great morning which showed the creativity of the children involved in the project.

Master Of The Arts Barry Cassin’s memoir isn’t just the perfect belated gift for dad or granddad on Father’s Day. As a beautifully written account of an extraordinary man’s life, it’s a gift for anyone looking for wisdom and wit at any time of the year. Like the man himself, the book is charming and delightful. In ‘I Never Had a Proper Job’, the actor and director who has lived near Balbriggan for over 50 years takes the reader on a journey through the glamour and tenacity required of a life spent treading the boards. It’s a very candid account of the heartaches and triumphs that made this gently faithful elder statesman of Irish theatre into a spry, immensely attractive writer. “Oh, you can keep saying that sort of thing,” he smiles. “It’s the first piece of writing I’ve done in a while, I’d written for RTÉ before, and one of my short stories won the Francis McMahon competition.” The story had actually been entered in competition unbeknownst to him and the first he heard about it was when he had won. “So, I’ve a 100 per cent record in writing prose so far,” he smiles. Barry’s latest venture into print could be a role model for a host of great causes from active ageing to coping with the demands of difficult economic times. His active retirement not only includes this great read, but also stretches to starring alongside some of the hottest names in cinema. Throughout his book Barry’s turn of phrase creates instantly memorable images in the mind’s eye that are touching and emotive insights to the lives of those driven to staying the course in a precarious profession. So it’s little wonder that he was chosen to round out a role in Neil Jordan’s latest film. Starring Saoirse Ronan and Gemma Atterton, his new vampire-movie promises a feast for fans of picture-driven narratives. ‘Byzantium’ will be released in Ireland soon. “It was a very nice way to finish up because my agent rang me saying that the director wanted to see me, and initially I wasn’t really that keen. Then she said that it’s Neil Jordan so I thought I’d better have a look. I’d never met him before and he said simply that he’s got ‘a short part at the beginning of the film and I’d like to see you in it’. “I have become a sitting-down actor, so it was very pleasant. I won’t do the theatre anymore – I couldn’t go in and out to town – my health is good but I’m pretty much confined to barracks.” He last performed as a jobbing theatre actor at home in Ireland at one of Alan Stanford’s ventures at the Gate, when a health scare meant he could only participate in the rehearsals. “Well, even though I’ve been in Balbriggan since I got married in 1950, I don’t really have a hometown. The early years were down to my father’s job – I did my schooling in Monaghan, and we moved quite a bit for the times – then because I was an actor was really orientated towards Dublin. “On the one hand I’d the acting life in Dublin, and on the other was this farm, just outside Balbriggan. Now my youngest son,
Andrew runs the farm, I was talking about the dichotomy of lifestyles only yesterday with my daughter Anne, the theatre on one side and farming on the other, it’s a fair old contrast, not many people have that!” “Anne and Lillian, the two girls went to the convent in Balbriggan, the lads went first to Balrothery and then to Gormanston. And now the grandchildren are going to these. Andrew has a family of five, all boys, I suppose he’s hoping to find a farmer out of that. “Philip has a business out of Dublin, and James and Mary run a children’s play centre just outside the town near the golf course – DJs.” Other favourites of the Irish stage and screen during the past 60 years are remembered with affection, admiration and in some cases gratitude for an unexpected generosity or grace under pressure. It’s through his long association with John B Keane that he decided to launch the book at Writers’ Week in Listowel. “I am looking forward to it, I know the town well. Jimmy Deenihan is a Listowel man and he opened a very good museum to John B, and invited me down to speak at the opening. He’s open to the idea of more readings for fans: “Yes, I think the reading of anything is better when it’s the writer reading it; but we’ll see…my health is very good but I can’t walk. I have to have a walker and assistance; I am sensible enough not to drive unless I’ve a driver with me and we have to put up with these things,” he says. His 80s are presenting him with a whole set of new challenges. He says learning lines took longer, acquiring the perfect accent, discerning which parts suited his altered strengths – not for him any longer the frenetic pace of multiple costume changes – so he has elegantly adjusted to the losses of the two great loves of his life: physically demanding live stage performances, and the presence of his beloved wife, Nancy. His description of her passing and its affect on him, and their five children, is particularly poignant. Both her values and his have been passed on to their children and grandchildren. His eldest daughter, Anne (presenter of RTÉ’s Nationwide) led the eulogies to their mum on behalf of her siblings. The memoir is in fact dedicated to his wife, and Anne’s ‘unfailing assistance’ in the preparation of the book is acknowledged in the credits. The affection and support of all their children comes across through the wonderful photos and stories related here, as does the bond he shared with friend and colleague, Ray MacAnally. On reflection, he says that the stage performance that has given him most satisfaction recently was the Abbey’s production of an adaptation by Seamus Heaney, as it gave him a real sense of achievement. Not because it was the last in his much-delayed performances in the National Theatre, but because the northern Irish literary giant’s obvious pleasure in the treatment of his work gave both cast and director a genuine sense of achievement. “I don’t think I could have finished up with a better production,” he says.

The Parents and Students Council at Skerries Educate Together held a sponsored walk recently. The walk raised funds for the school’s new library book fund and Temple Street Children’s Hospital. The walk left the school and made its way around Kelly’s Bay before returning to the school. The children of the school, with some help from parents and teachers, organised the walk and fundraising. The money raised is split 75 per cent for the school’s new library book fund and 25 per cent for Temple Street Children’s Hospital. The Students Council selected Temple Street as their chosen charity. The new library will be located in the school extension, which plans to open in September 2013. The students and their parents deserve great credit for organising the fundraiser. We wish them happy reading in their new library.

St George’s National School in Balbriggan recently held an intercultural day at the school. The school community currently has a vast mix of different nationalities attending and many showcased their homelands on the day. Parents, special guests, councillors, support and community groups and local primary and secondary schools were invited to attend. On the day you could taste food from around the world, visit their Intercultural Exhibition Room, listen to the wonderful choir, sing songs from around the world and watch a fashion show with clothes from around the world! Each class in the school also participated in these activities during the school day. The pupils also had the opportunity to play a variety of games and perform dances from countries around the world. This event was run as part of the schools Yellow Flag Programme, which is a progressive equality and diversity initiative for primary and secondary schools to promote and support an environment for interculturalism and it is run by the Irish Traveller Movement. It was clear that St. George’s NS throughly embraced the different cultures of their pupils. A great day was had by all and the hard work of all the students and pupils was apparent as all the activities ran so smoothly. We’re sure that the shool will have many successful events in the future.
