Local Schools Back Cut in Book Costs A number of North County schools have declared their support for a recent petition set up by the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul (SVP), which has highlighted the need for a cut in book costs through a national book rental scheme. The petition was set up with the hope of gaining awareness on the crippling costs of buying school books for families. It is hoped that

Chamber Meets Water Chief The serious situation with water supplies is evident throughout the entire North County area, with some places more affected than others. The situation in Malahide is no different. As a result, Malahide

Chamber of Commerce is in constant contact with the local authority in respect of its ongoing water problems. A delegation, led by Derek Fowler with Barry Gibney and Dave Gorman met with council

officials and sought a better form of contact when issues arise from water shortages, or any other form of interruption that may affect their ability to operate businesses correctly. A Chamber spokesperson said, “During the meeting, an attempt was made to have water rates reduced to businesses that were adversely affected by water related problems last December. These companies suffered a serious loss of revenue while still incurring costs, directly from water being turned off and will obviously still be affected going forward. However, this hopeful request would

not be considered.” On a more positive note, the Chamber have been assured that “all works to improve the Malahide water system are in place. They will have, by the end of next year, an extended capacity to the reservoir. This should double in size, while also renewing pipelines from this facility to the town. Other options are to supply water directly to the town, should any future problems arise that restrict the main supply.” The council have committed to upgrading their telephone system to include a better live service over the week-end periods when disruption takes place. By Kieran Dunne the campaign will attract the signatures of parents and teachers alike with the view to convincing Minister for Education, Ruairi Quinn, to establish the much needed rental scheme. So far, primary and secondary schools from Swords, Malahide, Donabate, Lusk, Skerries and Continued on page 10

Special Needs Cuts To Affect North County Deputy Clare Daly (SP) has expressed her dismay at the “absolute ludicrous” thought of special need assistant cutbacks this September. This follows an announcement on the need to cap services, made by the Government recently. The cutbacks would mean a number of special need assistants across the North County losing their jobs, following on from a decision made by the previous government in lieu with the EU/IMF deal. A total of 227 posts need to be cleared nationwide. Speaking to the County Leader, Daly spoke of her disgust at what she described as a ‘sinister decision by the government’: She said, “This is a line in the sand issue, there’s no way children are going to be made scapegoats in an economic crisis that had nothing to do with them. It’s absolutely not on. Parents in some instances don’t even know if their children are going to be able to go to school because of this decision. They need the care to be able to do that,” she concluded . The news will come as a shock to much of the North County with workers and parents now waiting anxiously on a decision while school principals face the bleak prospect of not knowing what staffing levels they will have this September.
