Local Schools Back Cut in Book Costs A number of North County schools have declared their support for a recent petition set up by the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul (SVP), which has highlighted the need for a cut in book costs through a national book rental scheme. The petition was set up with the hope of gaining awareness on the crippling costs of buying school books for families. It is hoped that

Chamber Meets Water Chief The serious situation with water supplies is evident throughout the entire North County area, with some places more affected than others. The situation in Malahide is no different. As a result, Malahide

Chamber of Commerce is in constant contact with the local authority in respect of its ongoing water problems. A delegation, led by Derek Fowler with Barry Gibney and Dave Gorman met with council

officials and sought a better form of contact when issues arise from water shortages, or any other form of interruption that may affect their ability to operate businesses correctly. A Chamber spokesperson said, “During the meeting, an attempt was made to have water rates reduced to businesses that were adversely affected by water related problems last December. These companies suffered a serious loss of revenue while still incurring costs, directly from water being turned off and will obviously still be affected going forward. However, this hopeful request would

not be considered.” On a more positive note, the Chamber have been assured that “all works to improve the Malahide water system are in place. They will have, by the end of next year, an extended capacity to the reservoir. This should double in size, while also renewing pipelines from this facility to the town. Other options are to supply water directly to the town, should any future problems arise that restrict the main supply.” The council have committed to upgrading their telephone system to include a better live service over the week-end periods when disruption takes place. Continued on page 10

By Kieran Dunne the campaign will attract the signatures of parents and teachers alike with the view to convincing Minister for Education, Ruairi Quinn, to establish the much needed rental scheme. Special Needs Cuts To Affect North County Deputy Clare Daly (SP) has expressed her dismay at the “absolute ludicrous” thought of special need assistant cutbacks this September. This follows an announcement on the need to cap services, made by the Government recently. The cutbacks would mean a number of special need assistants across the North County losing their jobs, following on from a decision made by the previous government in lieu with the EU/IMF deal. A total of 227 posts need to be cleared nationwide. Speaking to the County Leader, Daly spoke of her disgust at what she described as a ‘sinister decision by the government’: She said, “This is a line in the sand issue, there’s no way children are going to be made scapegoats in an economic crisis that had nothing to do with them. It’s absolutely not on. Parents in some instances don’t even know if their children are going to be able to go to school because of this decision. They need the care to be able to do that,” she concluded . The news will come as a shock to much of the North County with workers and parents now waiting anxiously on a decision while school principals face the bleak prospect of not knowing what staffing levels they will have this September.

much more while on the break. The second is been planned for the mid-term break in November for three nights to the Carlton Shearwater Hotel, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway. It's anticipated that 180 people will participate in this trip based on last year's successful trip there. The breaks develop friendships between families and gives a much needed respite break to all who attend. It also allows less privileged families to experience activities they would otherwise not have the opportunity to experience due to economic and personal circumstances. Families are encouraged to go as a whole, making it a personal development programme for the family as a unit. It gives so many families an opportunity to have a break in a friendly atmosphere where they can feel comfortable and at ease because they are with so many people who are in a similar situation to themselves. It gives the parents /carers an opportunity to meet and share information in an informal setting.

As we get ever closer to the judging of the Tidy Towns, the Balbriggan town and committee are working as hard

as ever to get the town looking picture perfect for the competition. The Balbriggan Flower Box Scheme is a new initiative between Balbriggan Town Council, Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce and local traders with the support of Blooming Baskets. The aim is to further improve the appearance of buildings in the town centre by creating a co-ordinated floral

display. Window boxes and hanging baskets are being provided outside participating properties in the town centre. The boxes and baskets are watered by an automated watering system which is supplied by the Town Council. We’re certain that all the town’s hard work will pay off and that the town will be in full bloom in time for the judging.

Malahide Castle Project To Create 200 Jobs By Kieran Dunne Around 200 jobs will be created at Malahide Castle following the decision by the government to earmark €6.5 million for construction plans. Included will be a new Craft Courtyard and Botanical Gardens. Local councillor, Peter Coyle (Lab) has welcomed the decision to

Clinic: Malahide

The discovery of human remains by Eirgrid workers has thrown up a number of possibilities about their origin. A total of three skulls with other bones were found in a field close to the edge of the Rogerstown Estuary in Rush during excavation work last week. Rush resident and local historian, Kevin Thorp, who has studied ancient burial grounds in the area, feels that the remains may date back 5,000 years to the Bronze Age. He said, “an eyewitness who saw the remains said he thought they were pretty brown and crumbly, which points to them being very old indeed, maybe up to five to six thousand years old. We know that people lived here at that time as not only have heaps of shells called kitchen middens been found in the area in the past but at least two chieftain’s burials were discovered in fields very nearby,” he said. Thorp continued, “It is possible that these remains are of Norse origin, but the archaeologists will pinpoint pretty accurately whether they are or not. There are a number of possibilities here. If there are any vestiges of clothes in this grave, they are likely to be some victims from the Tayleur disaster of 2Ist January 1854, when an emigrant ship sailing to Melbourne sank off Lambay drowning over 300 people, mostly women and children. If they were victims of the Tayleur tragedy, its possible that the reason they were not buried in Whitestown cemetery was because they were of unknown provenance and could not be buried in a Catholic graveyard in case they had not been baptised.

earmark the money for the project, citing the positive outcome of job creation in the area. Speaking to the County Leader, he said: “I welcome the fact the Castle Demesne will now be put to use in terms of job creation. It’s great news economically for the area as it is a positive development, following all the talk of job losses lately. It is also good to see a top craft/restaurant business coming to the area as that will also attract plenty of locals,” he concluded. Initial stages of work have already gotten under way with contractual labour to begin in autumn. The castle will close for the project to commence towards the end of August and it is hoped that work will be complete in time for next summer.

Support Group In North County A new support group for those affected by Raynaud’s and Scleroderma has been set up by Balbriggan local, Meadhbh Cleary. Some Raynaud’s suffers may be affected by a secondary disease called Scleroderma, which is a chronic disease of the immune system, blood vessels and connective tissue. Meadhbh is a suffer of both. She realised the need for a support group after she couldn’t get any further information from her doctor on living with Scleroderma. The group, organised

through The Irish Raynaud’s and Scleroderma Society, is still new, but so far has met four times and the response has been good. It is the first Dublin Support group for the society and is clearly needed, with one member travelling from Dundalk to Swords to go to the meetings. They are hoping to meet up every month, inviting experts such as nurses, make up artist, podiatrists to come and talk to the group. The group is not only open to suffers of Raynaud’s and Scleroderma, but their families, friends and those needing advice or help with the diseases.

Lots of fun is sure to be had so come along and join the fun.

Children and teachers from Holmpatrick National School in Skerries spent a whole day wearing pyjamas in class instead of their clothes. The event has been organised for charity and it was a special day for everyone. Council Bin Collection To Cease The County Council will no longer be involved in refuse collection from early next year. This trend has been replicated all over the country and now only Dublin City Council are the sole remaining local authority to continue providing bin collection in their area Happily, there will be no

Continued from page 1 Portmarnock have backed the scheme in the North County, with some even forwarding on support emails to parents. Speaking to the County Leader, Principal Miriam Dowdall of St Helen’s JNS, Portmarnock said: “It is something we would definitely back, we have introduced our own system on a smaller scale where we would recycle books back in to it yearly. Anything that cuts down costs for parents is most welcome.” SVP believes that the scheme would help every family in the North County as it would reduce the huge amounts spent on buying these books. It has attracted thousands of signatures so far with numbers growing every day. Audrey Deane, Social Policy & Justice Officer for SVP said: “We’re delighted how it’s going, so far, we have thousands of signatures and we spoke with the Minister for Education who has agreed that something needs to be done urgently.” “More and more people have been coming to us of late as it is the time of year when book lists are sent out. Families are being put in a situation of anxiety and hardship wondering where they’re going to get this money from when it could all be so avoidable.” It is understood that Minister Quinn has contacted school book publishers on the situation and is currently awaiting a response.

Tidy Towns Fever Hits Rush The Tidy Towns competition has made a “huge difference” to Rush according to Tidy Towns committee member Louise O’Loughlin. Speaking to the County Leader recently, Louise said that the resurrection of the Tidy Towns has been fantastic for the town: “The efforts put in by everyone involved have just been brilliant,” she said. “It’s our first time entering the Tidy Towns contest in 10 years and the difference compared to last year has been huge. So whether we win or not, just being involved has given Rush a boost and it’s great to see the town looking so well.” Louise says one of the best things about being involved in Tidy Towns has been the community efforts: “There has been a huge focus on a community effort this year which is fantastic to see. Everyone is really involved and we have people out every week doing the clean ups. It wouldn’t be possible without the whole community’s input.”

Prepare a Natural Compost Bin Careful If you plan on doing a lot of gardening, it’s always a good idea to provide the plants with natural fertilisers. The installation of natural compost bin will help in providing the plants with natural nutrition. This will not only maximise the growth of the plants but will also save a lot of money. All you need is to collect the dead and dried leaves in this bin and cover them with soil. Within a span of few months high quality fertilizer will be prepared. It’s very easy to do, cheap and above all is very good for your plants.

Selection Of Plants The first and foremost step is to select the plant properly. It is very important that the plant you choose for your garden must complement nature as well. This means that it can adapt itself properly in heat, dryness and summer. Another important point to remember is that before you select a plant you must check the conditions of your garden as well like the pH of the soil or the amount of sunlight your garden receives.

Where to Water Watering is a chore that needs to be carried out throughout the summer season, but remember to use water wisely and, rather than drenching your entire garden regularly, concentrate your efforts on the following: Plants growing in pots, containers and hanging baskets as these can dry out very quickly, often in the course of a few hours. Newly planted trees and shrubs, as these are very vulnerable to drought stress, as are any freshly sown or newly planted parts of your garden so water them all on a regular basis.

Any

Keep Things Healthy Healthy plants must be selected for the garden to ensure they survive the summer season: Make sure that the plants you select for your garden are healthy. Avoid purchasing the plants, which have discoloration, drooping leaves or appear sickly. If you are starting your garden with seeds then make sure that the seeds you purchase are of high quality.

Staking and Support Put stakes and supports in place for tall, herbaceous plants, like peonies and delphiniums. This will prevent them from falling over or look messy, as they grow taller and heavy with blooms with the progressing season. Likewise, as climbers display new growth, be sure to position them on a support system in order to maintain control over where they grow and prevent an untidy appearance.

A Splash of Colour There’s no better way to celebrate the summer season that to add some colour and vibrancy to your garden. For extra splashes of colour in your garden you may consider Container Planting or Hanging Baskets. Remember to regularly turn your pots though so the plants get equal exposure, otherwise the side facing the wall will perform poorly in comparison to the side in direct sunshine.

Start-Up Business Funding For SR Technics Workers they act quickly. Under the European Globalisation Fund (E.G.F), former SR Technics workers at Dublin Airport who were made redundant after February 12th 2009, can apply for grant assistance to fund the setting up of a new business. The local Enterprise Board is warning that former SR Technics workers could miss out on valuable financial assistance and business support services, unless they submit their business proposals quickly. Oisin Geoghegan, CEO of the Fingal County

Fingal County Enterprise Board have confirmed that almost â‚Ź600,000 of grant aid has already been approved for 48 individual start-up businesses, which are being set up by former SR Technics workers in the North County and beyond. However, the Fingal County Enterprise Board has cautioned that other SR Technics workers who want to set up their own business in this region could miss out on grant aid worth thousands of euro and crucial business support services unless

Enterprise Board, said: “The value of each grant varies from project to project, but a typical employment grant is in the region of â‚Ź10,000, depending on the job specification. To apply for funding under the E.G.F, SR Technics workers first have to submit a business proposal outlining their enterprise idea. As the final deadline is only a couple of weeks away, Geoghegan is concerned that some SR Technics workers might miss out on accessing important grant aid.â€? Applications should be submitted to the Enterprise Board and all applications are subject to appraisal by an Evaluation Committee to assess the business proposal. Prospering At Olympic Levels I

meet Robbie Corr, Sports Officer with Prosper Fingal at their training centre on Seatown Road in Swords. It was a day of celebration for five athletes from the service as they prepare to travel to Athens to represent Ireland at the Special Olympics World Summer Games. “Our athletes have overcome major obstacles in life and have battled hard against stiff competition to achieve this honour,” he comments proudly, amidst great warmth and much slagging between Robbie and the team members.

A keen sportsman, Robbie believes participation in physical activity is invaluable in terms of personal well being. “We're influencing people's lives at Prosper by having them train three times a week. We work on all aspects of life, not just going out and bouncing a ball. I give dietary and nutritional advice too, even though I know I could do with it myself,” he laughs. The success of the sports programme at Prosper is evidenced by the fact that almost half of the 240 service users across North County Dublin participate in it. As Robbie points out, “this is in stark contrast to the three per cent of the general population who exercise regularly.” Robbie's love of sport goes back to his teenage years when he played soccer for Loughshinny, a strong Intermediate team at the time. As a talented footballer, when he left school he lived many young boy's dream and completed a FAS soccer coaching course, run in conjunction with the Football Association of Ireland. “I got to play lots of football

Caroline

Heffernan and in the process earn coaching badges,” Robbie says “but on finishing the course I realised that I was a good player but not a great player.” However, one of the course facilitators, Fran Butler believed Robbie had 'the potential and flair to be a coach' and encouraged him to apply to Camp USA as a sports counsellor. He subsequently spent four hot summers in New Jersey building up vital experience teaching various different sports. While enjoying every minute of his time in the States, in 1998 he decided it was time to settle in Ireland and “start looking at a career.” Having returned home, he undertook a course in Health Studies at the National College of Education in Dorset Street in 1999 to complement his coaching experience. “It was part-time, so I worked during the day on building sites and at night time went to college.” On completing the course, Robbie began working in the Iveagh Fitness Centre

teaching aerobics, gym work and personal training. After a year there he was approached by Marian Browne then with the County Council to run the gym in Skerries Community Centre. Living in Laytown with his family, this position was ideal for Robbie. A few years later, Marian also asked Robbie about the possibility of Prosper Fingal service users coming to the gym for a workout every week and he thought it a great idea. “They started to come down every Friday afternoon and I would teach aerobics and show them how to use the gym equipment.” Eventually, having built up a close rapport with the group, Robbie resigned from the Community Centre and began working with Prosper as a care assistant in the training centre, which was based in Piercetown at the time.

• Robbie Corr

“It was great! I had my sports training and now I was learning about all types of disability.” Robbie was eventually appointed sports co-ordinator of Prosper Fingal in 2006 just as a conscious decision was made to invest more time and energy into their sporting programme. Relishing this opportunity, Robbie approached Conan Byrne of Sporting Fingal with a view to establishing an eleven a-side club team for players with intellectual disability. While Sporting Fingal has now ceased to exist, the team established by Robbie with the assistance of Conan and Richie Dunne from Special Olympics has gone from strength to strength. “There are now 23 athletes playing soccer and, as it's a club team, it's run very differently to the Prosper service which is good for the guys because it gives them another experience.” “Across all our sports, there's great camaraderie among the athletes and the stronger ones watch out for the weaker ones which is brilliant for team morale.” One of Prosper Fingal's goals is the fostering of independence and Robbie explains that all service users travel to training venues independently, “whether it's soccer training in Skerries or swimming in ALSAA.” While sport encourages the integration of Prosper's service users, other pursuits which facilitate socialisation, such as trips to the cinema or going out for dinner are organised by the recreation officer Sinead, and staff member Ciara, and Robbie enjoys getting involved in these activities too. While his role at Prosper Fingal keeps him extremely busy, Robbie also makes plenty of time for his young family, six year old Seán and three year old Ruby. “Seán waits for me to come home at night to tell him a bedtime story,” he laughs. “I also do a bit of 'DJ’ing' in my spare time for the fun of it. My wife, Victoria is very patient and deserves a gold star!” With the Special Olympics beginning on 25th June, Robbie is looking forward to joining the athletes for the opening ceremony and being there to cheer them on as they battle it out in their chosen sport. He believes that everyone involved will have a 'life experience to treasure forever' and has urged all athletes to 'come home with a smile.' The Special Olympics World Summer Games runs from 25th June to 4th July and we wish all athletes taking part 'the best of luck.'

Top Tips To Spruce Up Your Home This Summer

Spruce It Up With Flowers

Paint Is All Around

I say this time and time again, but one of the easiest and most cost effective ways to make an impact is with the addition of fresh flowers. I recommend fresh cut, brightly coloured flowers either from your own garden (if you happen to be so lucky) or from the local florist. Place them in a light and understated vase; avoid heavy, dark or bulky vases and let the flowers take centre stage. Placement should be casual and on table/counter tops to ensure the flowers are always visible. Consider the foyer, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom as prime locations.

Thinking of painting? Well now would be the ideal time to get those paint brushes out. You have the perfect excuse to go bright, light and cheery and get colours to compliment your breezy summer humour. A bright paint instantly transforms the light in a room and can make what may be like a small room seem big and airy. It will give your room and your mood a much-needed lift. Try mixing in different colour schemes such as greens, blues and whites to liven up a room and bring a feel of the ocean into your home. It may not be as good as the beach but it’s a start.

Many schools are nearing the end of the year and since we can’t rely on the weather, that’s a sure sign that summer is on its way. As we approach summertime, many homeowners want to spruce up their homes with a decorating makeover to match the season. Why not try out some of our tips to bring the lazy, carefree summer days into your home.

Lusk Tidy Towns In Great Shape

Newly elected County Mayor, Cllr Gerry McGuire (Lab) is pictured after his election at a ceremony in County Hall, Swords last Friday.

Lusk Tidy Towns is now celebrating 31 years of work for the competition. It has developed from being a village to a town in the last nine years, which means extra work of litter picking, planting, painting and general tidying up, which the hard working committee are delighted to do with wholehearted support from everyone. The shops are to be congratulated for their lovely hanging baskets and the community for the great care they take in keeping their

The children of Holmpatrick National School in Skerries wanted to show to their dads how special they are. There are so many ways to say to your father how much you care about him, but nothing compares with a handmade gift. The teachers helped them out, by guiding the kids in a workshop dedicated to Father's Day. Over 50 girls and boys spent a few hours on creating special gifts for their dads. Handmade cards were carefully drawn or painted and each piece had a really personal touch. Pictured proudly displaying their gifts are, L-R Georgia Nelson, Emmet Trant, Pic: RN Naoise Ensor, Aaron Allen.
