Despite the fact that we are still in the midst of a deep recession, we as a nation, always look forward to the New Year Sales. Ireland is going through tough times. We are still living through the aftermath of a deep recession, brought on us by the greed of a few. Once Eamon Gilmore TD again, many families will find it hard to face into the New Year with optimism.

Still, there are grounds for confidence about what 2013 can bring. In the past year, as a country, we have pulled back from the brink, and we have begun

suffering these problems and stresses alone. Parents make great efforts to protect their children and families from these worries.

There is a great desire especially in the New Year for us to be positive and to get on with things. However, we also need to put our minds collectively to sorting out problems that we face. Unemployment, mortgage arrears, pyrite and unfinished housing estates affect everyone who lives in Fingal in one shape or another. Economic recovery can only be assisted by tackling these head on. A recovery that benefits some and leaves others behind in our rush to focus on the positive will not serve anyone’s interests in the long run. To restore confidence and vibrancy in our towns and villages, we must make sure that every home and housing estate is finished to the highest standards. This will make Fingal a leading county for investment and growth in the years to come.

I am confident that 2013 will be the year when we get our economic sovereignty back, when we will make more progress on creating jobs, and when we will make serious inroads into problems like personal debt.

When we look back on 2012, there will be great moments to remember, like Olympic success for Ireland. But 2012 was also a year when, difficult as it was, we made important strides towards recovery for our economy, our country and our people. It won’t happen overnight, but 2013 will, I believe, be the year when we can begin to see the end in sight.

What we are working for, is to get people back to work, and to build a better future for our children, here in our own country. That is our aim for 2013.

I believe we can do this together. I believe in the ability of the Irish people to help each other through tough times, to recover, to prevail.

I know 2012 has been a very difficult year for many people and Micheál Martin TD families, but it is my hope that 2013 can be a year of change and hope, that we can make progress in creating jobs in our economy and help people in difficulty with personal debt and mortgages.

Like many in North County Dublin, I have a young family and I want the best for them.

There are significant challenges in our communities, but despite this, there are many reasons to be positive for our future.

BRENDAN RYAN TD to the readers of North County Leader The past year has been very tough on ordinary people and families, as the further taxes and budget cuts hit the household spend. The path to getting Ireland back on track is increasingly difficult for people and I see that reflected in every one of my seven clinics throughout the week.

There are some small signs that the economy is recovering; however we need to see real signs of job growth in 2013, if people are to believe we will see the end of this economic downturn. The latter half of 2012 has seen some high profile job announcements and the first net decrease in unemployment numbers since the first quarter of 2005. However, this needs to become a trend in 2013 for real encouragement to be taken for our economy and our people. In October, I hosted a Jobseekers

ALAN FARRELL TD to the readers of North County Leader “I would like to take this opportunity to wish all readers a very Happy New Year. I recognise the sacrifices made by people this year and every effort has been made to ensure that we protect core rates in this year’s Budget, such as income tax, social welfare and state pension rates, despite having to extract €3.5 billion from the economy as a result of the budgetary situation.

While the present Government did not cause the financial difficulties, we are taking responsibility for them. Part of this is supporting a transition from the old, failed economy, based on property, banking and debt to a new, sustainable economy based on

enterprise, exports and innovation through the Action Plan for Jobs.

When we took office in 2011 the jobs market was in free fall. In 2012 private sector employment has started to grow for the first time in four years. 20,000 new private sector jobs have been created in the past 12 months, mainly in the exporting sectors, in particular tourism, high-tech industry and in IDA-supported companies, following targeted assistance through the Action Plan for Jobs, launched by Minister Richard Bruton.

This year, investment in small and medium businesses will be at the heart of our policies. Government has earmarked almost half

Ireland remains a strong country with a great spirit and we can recover from the difficulties we face. There has been huge progress in terms of education in the North County over many years and it continues to have a young age profile and one of the fastest growing populations in the country.

Fianna Fáil has a role to play in bringing forward new ideas and reforming and renewing our party. While I am working to play a role in this, I know Senator Darragh O’Brien is performing a similar role in Seanad Éireann, as the party’s leader there.

From speaking with Darragh, I know of the continuing work he is doing with community groups and residents in North County Dublin on important issues, such as the proposed Monster Sewage Plant and cuts to Home Help hours.

I am heartened by the sense of community that exists in North County Dublin. If we all play to our strengths and maintain a sense of community, I know we will recover a stronger and better society from this crisis.

Again, I want to wish you and your family a peaceful New Year.

very positive year for Fingal tourism, as we retained the Fry Model Railway Collection, reopened Malahide Castle and Gardens which will created over 100 jobs.

Next year there will be three flagship events taking place in Fingal, including Ireland vs England at the new and improved Malahide Cricket Club and the Flavours of Fingal in Newbridge Demesne.

The Gathering will not only have benefits for tourism in Fingal, but it should also bring enhanced opportunities and relationships for future trade.

In 2013 I will remain committed to representing the North County as one of the fastest growing populations in Ireland and one of the youngest in Europe. I look forward to engaging with you in this process throughout the year.

CLARE DALY TD to the readers of North County Leader 2012 was a very hard year for many people who have had to face continuous austerity and a reduction in their living standards. To see over €20 billion shipped out of the country to pay the debts of banks and bondholders, while frontline services were slashed, has added insult to injury. It is not that hard choices had to be made, but rather the government has chosen to make ordinary families pay, rather than take on those at the top of Irish society.

They chose to continue to facilitate multinationals in tax avoidance. They didn’t even have to increase corporation tax, if they ensured it was paid at an effective rate of 12.5 per cent, (one of the lowest in Europe anyway), they could have raised an extra €4 billion, negating the need for any cuts or tax hikes.

Instead, 2013 will see the introduction of a tax on the home, which will force Clare Daly TD many into poverty, along with more cuts to home help hours, respite grants, and child benefit, along with rising costs and fees.

The only way to change things is by ordinary people organising. Like the Fingal Home Helps who took to the streets, or the Campaign Against the Household and Water Tax, or indeed, the tragic death of Savita Halappanavar, which brought people of all ages on to the streets to demand that abortion be legislated for in Ireland.

Nothing will change by waiting for the government to deliver. Rather change will come in spite of them.

2013 will mark one hundred years since the Dublin Lockout, when the workers of Dublin were embroiled in a mighty battle with the vested interests of the city’s wealthy employers. One hundred years on, will witness another mighty battle against property tax and austerity. A mass mobilisation of people power is really necessary to stop the austerity agenda.

Swords Dance Group Excel In First Contest A new local dance school in River Valley called ‘House of Swag’ had an amazing turn out at their first competition recently. Teachers Sinead and Nelly brought two of their crews ‘Limitless’ and ‘N.I.M’ to compete at Hip Hop Idol in the National Basketball Arena earlier this month.

Both crews performed to exceptional standards on the night;

Limitless received 3rd place and N.I.M came 1st, and also went on to win the overall first timer champions of the day.

Then the kids went on to do solos and despite the tough competition the day, many of the House of Swag dancers got all the way to the semi finals! Laura Doyle placed 6th, Michelle Farrell placed 5th and Chloe Joyce

placed 2nd. In the under 16’s category Isobel Cullen placed 6th and Emma Hallinan placed 1st.

The group were thrilled with their results of their first competition and now they are currently training for bigger and better things next year. Videos of both crews are available on YouTube.

PRESIDENT BALBRIGGAN CHAMBER

KEVIN TOLAN to the readers of North County Leader As another year finishes and we reflect back on the last 12 months, we can say a lot has been achieved.

The Infrastructural upgrades that have been completed, road improvements, water supply and broadband upgrades have been very welcomed, particularly for the manufacturing and Industrial sectors located in Balbriggan.

We are also aware of major drainage infrastructural works that are planned for 2013.

While we welcome these works, it is vital that they are carried out in as short a timeframe as possible and with minimal disruption to traffic and pedestrians.

Thanks to a unique collaboration between Fingal Tourism, Balbriggan Town Council, FAS and Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce, we now have a new Tourist Office open in 1 Kevin Tolan Quay Street, Balbriggan.

There has already been a lot of visitors, including locals expressing their appreciation of the arrival/existence of the Tourist Office. We have no doubt this will not only be a base point for Information on all local events, accommodation, facilities, but also a fulcrum by which many other ideas will be made a reality.

Sadly, we cannot ignore the reality for a lot of businesses that are struggling at present, particularly those in the town centre area or the ‘Heart of Balbriggan’ as it has been named in our Public Realm Plan. We hope in 2013 that the relevant officials in Fingal County Council will listen to their ratepayers and work with them to try and make proactive decisions to help keep the ‘Heart Beating’ in Balbriggan Town Centre.

the Floraville caps a year of successes for Skerries in the national spotlight. In the highly competitive annual Tidy Towns, despite this year’s many challenges, Skerries got an amazing 306 points - three more than 2011 and only six points behind the overall winner. Thanks to Skerries Tidy Towns’ tireless efforts, Skerries won a Gold Medal, Regional Award (out of all Dublin) and County Award (out of all Fingal). We also came a narrow second out of the entire country in the Irish Times Best Place to Live - a contest that garnered countless, beautifully written testimonials about all that Skerries has to offer, all published in the national press and on the internet.

Meanwhile, it has been the pleasure of Skerries Chamber of Commerce to continue to represent the business interests of the community, while also ensuring that traditions so important to the fabric of Skerries, such as our St Patrick’s Parade and annual Christmas lights can continue, entirely thanks to the support of local shops and businesses. It has been a busy and eventful, ultimately successful year to date - and here’s to 2013, a year in which Skerries Chamber looks forward to our many continued mutual successes.

The cliche about life being a roller coaster is not an exaggeration in terms of the year gone by, a year of ups and downs, of optimism and despair and one which a lot of us won’t mind leaving behind . 2013 is looming and with a new year comes the opportunity to look forward with a new optimism, to create new opportuTrish Murtagh nities and surround ourselves with positive and proactive thinking .

I have certainly had a baptism of fire this year, as my role as President of Malahide Chamber

came as a double edged sword, at a time when retail is at its most vulnerable and unpredictable. It was a huge honour to represent the business community and those in retail in particular .

The biggest challenge for our members was not development or growth, but mere survival in the current economic climate. The amazing thing that happened was that this challenge has brought our members and our community together in an unprecedented way .

The support that myself and the Chamber have received has been inspiring. People who have given of their time, their expertise and their energy has made our future a far more positive one. Co-operation from our councillors, our County Council and our members has put a firm plan in place for new opportunities in tourism and an opportunity to work together as a strong and dynamic group with endless ideas and motivation and an exciting vision for the year ahead .

I look forward to the coming year and would like to express my thanks to yourselves and your readers for their continued support.

Rush Students Win United Nations Accolades St Joseph’s Secondary School students from Rush participated in the Model United Nations (MUN), hosted by the International Relations Society in University College Cork recently.

The influx of new volunteers and the trojon work that was carried out by all the volunteers, enabled us to clean up more Black Spots in our town this year. This brought about our improved position in the National Tidy Town Competition achieving an extra six points and our high ranking in the IBAL Anti Litter League. I would like to extend congratulations to the surrounding Tidy Towns groups who won prizes in 2012. Rush 38th Scout Troop held a fundraising market in Kenure Woods, Rush recently.

The market was held, so that the group could raise much needed funds for their upcoming trip to the World Jamboree in Japan in 2015.

There was an array of stalls from producers of artisan goods on offer and the day was enjoyed by all. The event, which was organised by the local group, will greatly aid the group’s exciting trip to Japan in just over two years time.

MOST REV. DR. MICHAEL JACKSON to the readers of North County Leader The arrival of a new year somehow sweeps in upon us at the darkest time of the old year. After the preparations for Christmas are over and we have had the enjoyment of festivities and the presence of those we love around us, we have to face into a new and a different year from the one we are leaving. Always there are two sides to this story - those who look forward adventurously and those who look backward wistfully. After all, is this not the origin of the name: January itself?

The ancient Roman god Janus has two faces, one looking in each direction. This is the time of year we are Dr. Michael Jackson now in.

January is always a long month. The year starts slowly and drags us out of bed day by day, until we stop talking about the ‘new year,’ and simply call it ‘this year.’ We recall highlights of the year past and are delighted to remember things which we thought we had forgotten as memory sparks off fresh memory.

One of the highlights of my time in the dioceses of Dublin and Glendalough in the year past has been the introduction of the Revd Anthony Kelly as Bishop’s Curate to the parishes of Holmpatrick and Kenure with Balbriggan and Balrothery. The service took place on St Brigid’s Day in St George’s Church in Balbriggan. This enabled me to enter into the spirit of your community in a way which is lasting and memorable. I am always so pleased to become part of communities locally in every part of the dioceses, even if it is for an afternoon or an evening. The vitality of local communities is what keeps everything that matters to us most in Ireland going - connections, neighbours, personalities and shared activities.

I wish all the North County readers a very happy 2013 and, as you look forward, please also remember the things which for you made 2012 a good year in which to have been part of your community.

President of Rotary, Dave Murray was overwhelmed by the generosity of local shoppers at JCs and he said, “Rotary are giving €1500 worth of vouchers to St Vincent de Paul and we’re delighted to do so and look forward to doing plenty more in the future. In this day and age, there’s no more worthy cause that SVP”. Swords Group Celebrates 40th Anniversary Local group, Localise, who are based in Swords, celebrated their 40th anniversary recently. The night was atmospheric with a great turn out. On the night the group presented three awards to recipients who have served and helped people in their communities.

We will continue to do so in the future.” The group also helped to raise €1000 euro for the annual Focus Ireland ‘Key to a Home’ project and overall, a staggering €5000 was collected between the Localise groups.

Ballyboughal Pitch And Putt The Christmas competition at Ballyboughal Pitch and Putt club turned out to be a memorable one.

After a week’s rain, the day brightened to an almost sunny spring day.

Lots of Santas turning out to play and some elves as well. The 27 hole game threw up some very close cards on the day, with only one stroke separating the top two teams.

Winners of the Christmas 27 hole turkey scramble winners team ‘Jingle bells’, James Carroll, Tommy McCann, Margaret Kelly and Bernie Prendergast with a gross 67. Runners up team were ‘Reindeers’, Ronnie Delaney, Frank Hughes, Irene Parkinson and Ann McDonnell with a gross 68.

TDs Welcome Property Tax Waiver For Pyrite Homes Local TDs Alan Farrell (FG) and Brendan Ryan (Lab), have welcomed confirmation that pyrite homes will be granted a waiver from the Local Property Tax. “I am hugely relieved that a waiver will be granted to people living in homes affected by pyrite, ensuring they won’t have to pay a property tax on homes that are essentially worthless. The issue has been raised with the Minister for Finance, who has agreed with this approach,” Farrell said.

“People living in homes affected by pyrite have been through an awful couple of years,” he told the County Leader. “They have been left with are properties that are in

many cases uninhabitable. Being forced to pay the property tax would have been another blow for these families.”

Deputy Ryan was also pleased and welcomed the Minister’s comments on the matter, but said he was concerned that the minister indicated homeowners would have to demonstrate a certifiable level of Pyrite before exemption. “I would ask that rules be constructed in a sympathetic manner to allow those who are clearly suffering the effects from Pyrite and be exempt from the tax,” he said.

While Farrell and Ryan said that the announcement was very positive, they both agreed that more work needed to be done. Farrell said that more progress needed to be made on the resolution process from the Pyrite Panel, and Ryan called on the Government to act for the people who where “the victims of cavalier builders.”

Donabate Needle Crafters A Knit ‘n’ Natter group meet every Tuesday in the Donabate Portrane Community Centre from 10 am to 12 noon. A fee of €5 is charged to cover costs. Everyone welcome to knit and have a natter!
