Book of Condolence Opened At Swords Garda Station By Patrick Finnegan

Applewood Village, Swords, Co. Dublin

RESTAURANT SPECIAL 1st - 28th February

A Book of Condolence has been opened at Swords Garda Station as a mark of respect for Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe, who was brutally murdered last Friday evening. This callous murder has been widely condemned by all and is regarded as a new low in criminal activity. Garda Donohoe was shot dead by a gang as they robbed the Lordship Credit Union outside Dundalk. The gang stole €4,000 in cash before escaping from the scene. Garda Donohoe’s brother, Colm is also a Garda and is stationed In Swords. President of Fingal Dublin Chamber, Siobhan Moore, who signed the Book of Condolence at Swords Garda Station, spoke of the revulsion that the murder has caused. She told the County Leader, “On behalf of the business community of Fingal, I would like to express

our heartfelt sorrow at the murder of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe. A brave man doing his job. Families don’t expect that their loved ones not to return home after a day’s work. It’s truly shocking,” she said. Meanwhile, further President of Fingal Dublin criminal activity Chamber, Siobhan Moore is visited the North pictured signing the Book of County over the Condolence. weekend, when two raiders made off with money and cigarettes on Sunday evening last, when they held up Carey’s Foodstore in Portmarnock. Local councillor Ken Farrell (Lab), said he was also appalled by the desecration of the church. “Unfortunately, these horrendous acts tell us a great deal about today’s society. To vandalise such a sacred building shows an utter lack of respect and it is just appalling,” he said. “The Garda Station was a deterrent to potential vandals which is no longer there, and now the community is suffering as a result of this being taken away.” Kathleen O’Brien finishes off by saying that the one thing that is certain is that something must be done to prevent this happening again in the future: “We need some sort of alternate system in place, now that our Garda Station has been closed down. Locals can’t be going around worrying about what might happen, something must be done,” she concluded.

An Evenful Day At The Gym With their wedding day only a few weeks away, it was time for Warren and Chris to start getting into shape for the big day. They had a regime of going out for a run twice or three times a week to keep in shape, but they needed something extra to ensure they looked their best on the big day. With this in mind, the happy pair took them-

After getting into suitable gym attire, they decided to hit the treadmill and bike circuit. It was then on to the weights to tone up those all important muscles. Warren took to the weights like a duck to water, and he took particular delight in showing off his impressive pecks to Chris. However, Chris was distracted by the presence of hunky gym instructor, Brian, who seemed to be paying a lot of attention to her. It was clear that smooth Brian is the kind of guy that is well used to dealing with beautiful women, and as Chris

Please call Joan on: 0876963813 for more information, if you can help with this invaluable service to the community.

February and March this year will see the North County, and indeed the rest of Ireland, become a collective host for an Easter Adventure, with the biggest and most interactive Egg Hunt ever. Beginning on Tuesday, February 12th for 40 days and 40 nights at Easter, a collection of 100 exquisitely painted fiberglass egg sculptures will be located around our streets to form the egg hunt. After the hunt, each of the egg sculptures will be auctioned off, with all the funds going to the Jack & Jill Foundation. Two local artists from Skerries are doing their bit to help as they have each been asked to design an egg for the hunt. Artist, Karen Wilson lives in Skerries with her husband and two children, and was asked to design an egg when she was approached after one of her many exhibitions. She painted a series of beautiful flowers against a coloured backdrop for her egg design and told the County Leader how she got on. “I was a bit worried about whether my idea would transfer to the egg

I am pleased with the finished egg and I like the way the colours and textures worked together and made sure to include a bit of gold and blue to try to give it the ‘faberge’ look.” Local artist, Paul D’Arcy was also chosen to paint an egg. “My composition is called ‘The Celestial Waltz’ and consists of actor Brendan Gleeson (who posed for me) observing a baby floating simultaneously in space and water. A famous photo taken by the Hubble space craft in 1995 titled ‘pillars of creation’ is the setting to the painting,” he told the County Leader. Those taking part in the egg hunt will be given a book containing pictures of the eggs, as well as clues and maps to find them. After discovering 20 egg numbers they can enter for a grand prize. These include diamond pendant earrings and a chocolate factory visit for kids with lots of chocolate goodies.

Sixty Two Temporary Jobs For Balbriggan Local deputy, Brendan Ryan (Lab) has commended the work of the Local Employment Services from the Department of Social Protection in recruiting 62 local people from the live register for temporary work in the Balbriggan Passport Office. Last December, the Employment Services Employment Engagement Officer in Balbriggan secured agreement from Department of Foreign Affairs for Employment Services to undertake a large recruitment campaign for temporary staff for

the passport office. The entire Employment Services Team in the office in LinnComm House in Balbriggan then assisted with the campaign, including with enquiry, assessment and interview referral processes. Ultimately, this led to 62 local people gaining employment for a minimum of five months. Ryan told the County Leader, “This highlights the potential for successful local linkages between unemployed people, their local employment agencies and employers to create and fill

jobs, locally. This highlights to local employers the value in using local employment services to fill these jobs. I hope delete employers take notice of this success and will engage more extensively with local employment organisations to fill Brendan Ryan TD any vacancies. This announcement bodes well for the future and future job prospects in North County Dublin.”

YOURVIEW With reporter Celine Quinn

This week at the County Leader, we’re feeling very positive about our Emerald Isle at the beginning of 2013. As many of our North County residents have family and friends living overseas, relatives who are part of a large number of the scattered Irish diaspora across the globe, I was interested to find out:

you think ‘The Gathering’ is a Q: “Do good idea?”

Rush Scout Den To Get Surveillance System By Jennifer McShane

Celine Quinn

Alan Kane, Swords “No. It’s a waste of money. It’s a scam, it’s just the government trying to get money into the country from emigrants. People come back when they want to, they don’t need the Government to tell us to come home this year.”

Mark Crowley, Rush “I don’t know really. I suppose it is. Anything to get people back to try and spend their money and get the economy going, it has to be good. I don’t think it will result in a big boost for tourism. I mean, there’s a recession everywhere, people don’t have the money. If they do come, they won’t spend a lot. No, I’m not organising an event myself at the moment, sure every Friday night with your friends is a gathering!”

Denise Cahill, Swords “Yes. It encourages people to come home who haven’t been in a few years. I have a sister in New York, I think she’s due home in June. We might organise a ‘gathering’ event ourselves! I think it will boost tourism and the economy, there’s been so much advertising behind it. It’s a desperate measure to get people to come home, but in a positive way! Bring your own home and let them see what’s here, and people might think about coming home for good.”

Shauna O’Farrell, Donabate “I don’t think it will work, because no one has money to come back, that’s why they left, to get jobs elsewhere. I think people who live in America and have an Irish Granny or whatever, who always wanted to visit Ireland should come. But I think the people who were born here and lived here all their lives, but moved away for a job, shouldn’t come back to spend their money here.”

Margaret Duffy, Malahide “Yes definitely. I’m hoping to organise events this year, I have a son in Canada and a nephew in New Zealand, one due to come home in July and the other in December. So we’ll be having some big shin-digs!”

Ceppi Ennis, Swords “They government have to come up with some ideas to make money. It’s a bit exploitative, but sure then again we are the land of hundred thousand welcomes and we’ve always been promoting ourselves. It’s just another way of doing it. I don’t see anything wrong with saying, ‘we’re open for business, come on in!’. As long there’s something on here when people do come, and they don’t get ripped off by prices, and they’re not eating horsey-burgers!”

Local Councillor, Ken Farrell (Lab), has once again brought the issue of Rush Scout Den up with the Local Authority. Back in November, Cllr Farrell and members of the Scout Group told the County Council that anti-social behaviour around the area had increased and that the den was frequently subjected to attacks from vandals. The issue has been an ongoing problem since then and just last week, a Cllr. Ken Farrell meeting took place between Farrell, Rush Scout Group and a member of the County Council to discuss what steps could be taken to protect the building, which is one of the only buildings in Kenure

Demense still standing. Farrell got in touch with the County Leader to tell us how things were progressing: “The meeting went very well,” he said. “Firstly, we did reach an agreement about the fencing. While I had originally thought that this might be the best protective measure, it was thought by all parties that the fencing might in fact encourage more anti-social behaviour, rather then prevent it, so instead it was decided that we will use a surveillance system. This system will be way out of reach and will ensure that we can keep an eye on the den and hopefully keep the vandals well away from it.” “We’re hoping that all these steps taken will help to resolve the issue,” he continued. “It really is a sad reflection on our local society that we should have to take these measures in the first place, but the Scout Den is a valuable amenity in Rush, and we want to protect it, so that it can continue to be used by its members and indeed, the rest of the community.” Farrell also said that all parties were also in talks with the local Tidy Towns group, who requested that new lighting be put at the entrance to Kenure. Farrell says that this too will help with the problem. “We’re making great progress with the issue and hopefully, we should be able to get things started in the coming weeks,” he concluded.

Prestigious Award For Swords Business Home Instead Senior Care, Swords recently received the Vista I Award at Home Instead’s Annual Awards. The award recognises the Swords business’ ongoing growth and success within the home care market in North County Dublin. Tara Shortall, owner of Home Instead Senior Care in Swords told the

Michael May, Swords “It’s a great idea to get everyone together. It should have been done years ago. I watched a programme about it there the other night. No I’ve no event planned, I’ve only one family member over in England, John, but sure he might come back!”

Alan Gordon, Raheny “Of course it is. It can’t really be a bad thing. If it gets people back into the country, the economy will pick up with people spending money here. But it’s important that the hotels and restaurants don’t bump up their prices for ‘The Gathering’ this year, like they did during the good times. I’ve no relations abroad, so I don’t think I’ll be organising an event!”

When you hear the ads on the television and on the radio, it gives you a really good feeling. It’s something to uplift you from the usual talk about the recession. I’ll be going to a gathering event if I can!”

Welcome For Road Projects Funding There has been a warm welcome for the news that funding of over €5.5 million from the National Road Authority to projects in the North County will reduce traffic congestion and increase safety for drivers in the region. Local deputy, Alan Alan Farrell TD Farrell (FG) told the County Leader, “The National Roads Authority have allocated €5 million toward the widening of the of the road between Drynam and Lissenhall. This project will reduce traffic congestion, particularly at peak hours, meaning reduced commuter times between this part of Swords and the city centre. Facilities for cyclists and pedestrians will also be improved.” “A further €600,000 has been allocated toward various projects, including a design phase for further schemes and maintenance projects that will ensure the safety of our roads.” he said. Farrell was keenly aware of the advantages that

will accrue to motorists, who use this busy road. “This allocation will greatly improve driving conditions in Swords/Malahide by increasing capacity for the growing number of commuters that travel on this road to and from work each day.” Meanwhile, Brendan Ryan (Lab), has also welcomed the allocation of a further €5,071,965 to Fingal County Council by the Department of Transport. He said, “This is good news for the North County and comes on the back of the announcement this week of €5 million to widen the M1 from Drynam to Lissenhall in Swords, a noted bottleneck for thousands of North County commuters. The local and regional funding is of specific benefit to the rural parts of North County Dublin, with €750,000 allocated for improvements on the Naul Road and €50,000 allocated for work on the Gerrardstown Bridge on the Naul to Ballyboughal Road. Of this funding, €3,272,186 is allocated for unspecified other improvements and safety measures. In Brendan Ryan TD addition, low cost safety improvements will take place at the Martello Tower in Malahide, Loughshinny Cross Roads, Whitestown Road - Healy’s Lane junction in Rush among other areas.”

Join Balrothery Twinning Association The Balrothery Twinning Association is appealing for new members to join and experience the culture, cuisine and music of France. Balrothery is twinned with Landéan in the Breton region of France and the friendship between the two towns has

grown year on year since the link was first established in 1995. In those 17 years there has been all kinds of cultural exchanges between the two towns to the benefit of both and it is hoped that the strong bonds established between Balrothery and Landean

will continue far into the future. All that depends on the great work of the twinning committee and this is your opportunity to join in. Another committee AGM is scheduled to take place in the coming weeks. New members are always welcome so why not go along and find out what it is all about and take the opportunity to immerse yourself in French culture and make some new international friends.

Skerries RNLI Group Continues To Save Lives Figures just released from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) tell us, that once again, the organisation on a local and national level, continues to excel as they saved the lives of over 1,000 people last year alone. According to the figures, RNLI boats were launched 939 times last year bringing 1,041 people to safety. Locally, the Skerries RNLI boats were launched 17 times this year (as opposed to 28 times the year before), and a total of 17 lives were saved, which is up two from last year’s numbers. The local group is made up of many volunteers who fundraise, train and work tirelessly everyday to help those who get into distress at sea. Speaking to the County Leader about the Skerries numbers, PRO Niamh Stephenson, said that figures vary every year, but one thing that is very prominent from the figures is that there is a constant need for the service: “You can never really tell which way

the figures are going to go each year,” she said. “What we do see is that there is always a constant need for the RNLI to be there.” She goes on to say that the RNLI boats can be

launched for any number of reasons. “Skerries would be a very popular area for those wanting to partake in leisurely sailing, for example and if a person runs

into difficulties, this could be a reason for a boat launch. But other factors such as the weather conditions, engine failure or even persons who run into problems ashore can mean that a boat is called.” Niamh urges the local community to never be embarrassed about calling the RNLI, even if its just for a minor issue: “We’re here to help in whatever way we can so please call anytime you feel you need help,” she continued. “Conditions can change very quickly and we never mind launching. The main thing is to make sure people are safe.”

Nineteen Lives Saved At Dublin Airport

North County Living by Patrick Finnegan

In the decade since defibrillation was introduced at Dublin Airport, the Dublin Airport Police and Fire Service have saved the lives of 19 people, who were suffering cardiac arrest at the Airport. One such person is 85 year old, Jack Healy, who was only too happy to return to the Airport to say thank you to the crew involved in his incident. Last year, Mr Healy suffered a severe cardiac arrest outside Terminal 2. Within two minutes, members of the Airport Police / Fire Service were on the scene to attend to him. The team quickly assessed that Mr Healy had no pulse and administered the AED (automatic external defibrillation), resuscitating him. The Airport Fire Service ambulance then transported him to Beaumont Hospital where he spent six weeks recovering from the event. Mr Healy, who is now thankfully back to full health, was accompanied by his family to the Airport Fire

Come Fly With Me Community Affairs Manager at Dublin Airport Authority (DAA), Maura Cassidy is celebrating 35 years working for the company. She reached this landmark on 16th January last and has enjoyed every minute of her time at the airport. She told the County Leader about how it all came about. “I come from south County Galway, near Gort and, as children, we would travel to Shannon Airport for the day. It was a real treat for us and it was here that I developed a fascination for airports.” It comes as no surprise to find out that her first job was at Shannon Airport in 1978. She worked there for five years and then transferred to Dublin Airport in 1983, the same year that she married her husband, Barney. At that time, the Dublin Airport Authority was known as Aer Rianta and she quickly settled into her new position at the airport. These days, Maura is responsible for the interaction between the local communities and Dublin Airport. “As Community Affairs Manager, I deal with all of the surrounding communities in Swords, Portmarnock, Malahide, St Margaret’s and Santry. These are the areas most impacted by the airport. They’re located on flight paths and have problems associated with noise and traffic trying to access the airport.” The DAA are very hands-on when dealing with local problems and they could not have chosen a better ambassador than genial Maura to represent them. “I deal with Residents’ Associations and listen to their concerns. We do a lot with the local schools and with businesses through the local Fingal Dublin Chamber. We also work very closely with St Margaret’s Parish Council and we recently had their Parish Hall painted. This helps our relationships within the area, and we’ve got to know these people personally over the past 10 years. They feel free to lift the phone at any time to let us know of any problems that arise. It’s a really good relationship to have,” she said. Maura also spoke of the significant local sponsorship programme, which the DAA is engaged in. “We sponsor local GAA clubs in the area, including Naomh Mearnóg in Portmarnock, St Margaret’s, St Sylvester's, Fingallians and the juvenile section of St Finian’s. Our sponsorship programme is very geared towards youth, and we find that, through the clubs, that we can reach large numbers of youths in the area. We want them to realise that this is their airport, for their

use. They’re our future customers and our future staff,” she said. The company’s sponsorship doesn’t just apply to sport. From day one, they’ve been the main sponsor of Swords and Malahide Young Musician of the Year. The company has an extensive programme with local schools, including the junior achievement, which is a dedicated programme designed by Junior Achievement Ireland. “We’re twinned with St Finian’s Community College in Swords through ‘Business in the Community Ireland’ This involves working with 5th years over a two year period and includes a CV workshop and a day in the life of a staff member. I manage that entire programme,” said an enthusiastic Maura. It is hard to believe that such a busy person as Maura could have any time for outside activities or interests. Nothing could be further from the truth. This energetic lady, who is domiciled in Clonsilla, is a past President of Blanchardstown Chamber. She is also a member of the governing body of the Institute of Technology in Blanchardstown. This involves meeting people at all levels about various activities at the airport and informing them about upcoming projects. I have also just been elected as treasurer of Fingal Dublin Chamber,” she said. Her hobbies and interests outside of work also include being active. “I have four children, with not a lot of spare time. I love to cook and our house is almost always full. We have a sort of ‘Open House’ policy. I love the outdoors and I’m a keen walker and we like to go camping, mainly to pursue our interest in walking. We try to travel as much as possible and like to keep off the beaten track, where possible. We hope to visit Sark, one of the Channel Islands this year. They have no cars there and that suits us just fine,” said an energetic Maura. She and her husband Barney, along with two others, are in the process of visiting the islands off Ireland. “We started this project about eight years ago and we’re now working our way around the coast and we hope to visit all of the islands around Ireland,” she said. This year is a very special one for Maura, as she celebrates 30 years of marriage to Barney. Last year, they spent a camping holiday in Slovenia and they were enthralled by the beauty of the place. For the moment though, Maura will continue to be the friendly face of DAA and continue the great work she started 35 years ago.

“Our sponsorship programme is very geared towards youth. We want them to realise that this is their airport, for their use. They’re our future customers and our future staff”

Swords Kick Starts Mental Health Awareness Swords was chosen as the venue for a very special one-day festival held recently to highlight the issue of youth mental health. Swords Youth Services and the Fingal Film Festival organisation hosted the event at Fingal Community College and the aim was not only to raise awareness of the

issue but also to raise cash to support weekend counselling services for young people in the North County area. “When we talk to young people about the issues that are most important to them, the first and foremost of concern is mental health issues,’ said Ger Robertson from

Swords Youth Service who told the County Leader. “We as a local organisation and a community need to recognise the importance of mental health. It is important to let our young people know they are valued and we care. We believe this event in conjunction with the Fingal Film Festival was

a great starting point, to build on this into the future,” she added. The Youth Mental Awareness Festival sparked huge interest within a number of local organisations, communities and individuals all of which feel passionately about aiming to reach that €20,000 goal. With the event headed by Fingal Film Festival (who will be officially launching their own festival in May this year), it was decided that through both organisations’ networks, it would be possible to kick-start an annual Festival of animation & Film Screenings , Live bands and kid’s entertainment. This event was a huge success and raised much needed funds for a regular Mental Health Counselling service that is desperately needed here in the North County. Another local group, Jigsaw North Fingal are also actively promoting the issue and are holding free evening information sessions at 7.15pm on Wednesday, 30th January in the Carnegie Court Hotel in Swords and Thursday, 31st January at 7.15pm in the Bracken Court Hotel in Balbriggan.

In recent weeks local Balbriggan Tidy Towns group have launched a new initiative to work with local secondary schools. After paying a visit to Ardgillan College last week, it was the turn of Balbriggan Community College to host the Tidy Towns, which they did very enthusiastically. PRO officer Zoe Nelson told the County Leader more about the day: “The third year class in Balbriggan Community College who have chosen to liaise with the Tidy Towns team are called ‘Allen’ and are named after the beautiful Shannon lake. They sent an invite to Balbriggan Tidy Towns and developed a welcoming committee and they also prepared questions which would help them with their completion of their CSPE (Community, Social and Political Education) project. “Before Christmas, the class also helped to plant trees and bulbs around Balbriggan Garda station, so this classroom session focused on the meaning of volunteering and stewardship, she continued. Their very proactive class teacher, Stephanie Sherman was very positive about the experience and said the students had asked if they could help with future projects. This is music to the ears of the Tidy Towns team as it means the engagement with the students has awakened a genuine interest in their local environment. Joe Troy,

Men Spend Longer Grooming Themselves Than Women This may come as a shock to all our female readers, but recent survey figures show that males now spend longer on their daily grooming routine than females! According to the UK survey, a man can spend up to 75 minutes every day washing, shaving and styling themselves. This compares with the 70 minutes that women spend on their

beauty regime. Further figures show the lengths to which the gentleman will go to maintain his image: 85 per cent of men admitted to spending more than half an hour on hair styling, 42 per cent said they owned a hair dryer, 36 per cent said they owned hair straighteners and a whopping 98 per cent said they planned what they were going to wear at least two days in advance. According to the survey, the average man owns four pairs of shoes, five pairs of jeans, 17 shirts, and 11 pairs of socks of varying quality. Make of that what you will!
