Community Spirit Triumphs On St Patrick’s Day St Patrick’s Day proved to be one of the most colourful ever witnessed in the North County. The sun shone spectacularly and everybody in the county seems to have been to one of the parades. We had a total of five parades, which ensured that there was a day of celebration seldom seen in the region. With parades in Balbriggan, Lusk, Rush, Skerries and Swords, the diversity of cultures and traditions of our people was there to be enjoyed by all. There was a fantastic turn out, both by those parading and those lining the routes. A huge number of children took part – from all sorts of sports, dance and community groups and pubs and restaurants all over the North County did a roaring trade, as families enjoyed the occasion. A remarkable aspect of the parades was the

By Patrick Finnegan absence of commercialism. They represented a triumph of community endeavour and displayed the wonderful work of local volunteer groups and residents associations. This imaginative flair was evident everywhere, with Rush providing a dazzling display of vintage cars which reminded us of a time long gone. Here, the evidence of community involvement was obvious. A similar theme was adopted in Skerries where the centenary of the 1911 census was commemorated. The residents of Skerries deserve special credit for this excellent parade. Swords also held a much welcomed parade after some years without one. The vast range of diversity was particularly evident here and the parade turned out to be a great success, attracting a huge attendance. Swords le chéile

deserve great recognition for the success of this parade, which we hope will be an annual event. Lusk and Balbriggan also provided a day to remember, with bands and street entertainment provided for all. Both towns were awash with the national colours and exuded pride in their locality. Once again the voluntary committees here take the kudos and show that creativity, flair and imagination combined with dedication and hard work are never far from the surface in the North County. This upbeat spirit will ensure that we can and will overcome all obstacles and have contributed hugely to making the North County the most desirable area of the country to live and the envy of all. We salute all our dedicated volunteers and community groups. See pages 10, 12 and 16 for our St Patrick’s Day colour pages.

Concerns For Metro North? The delivery of the crucial Metro North infrastructural project seemed less certain this week, following a less than compelling commitment to its future from the Department of Transport. The business community are certain to be disappointed with a ‘feeble’ response from the Transport Department to a direct question posed by this newspaper, related to the project’s future. When questioned about the current situation regarding the commencement of preliminary works on Metro North and if the project will definitely go ahead, the response was worrying. It said, “The Government will make a decision on Metro North when it has time to consider it fully. The Minister (Leo Varadkar) is currently familiarising himself with all aspects of his Transport brief, and no decision will be made at this stage.” This seems a far cry from the vocal pre-election utterances of the Fine Gael party, who were fully committed to Metro North and the

obvious benefits in will bring to the North County, and Swords in particular. These have been well documented in previous editions of this newspaper. It may well be a case of ‘First Night’ jitters, now that the public purse is within their grasp. Nevertheless, this latest Government line is set to cause concern within the business sector, who view Metro North as vital Leo Varadkar TD to the local economy. Minister Varadkar represents a large area of Swords, which will directly benefit from Metro North, yet he seems to be less than committed to the project at this stage. The silence from the Minister is deafening and particularly worrying.
