Community Spirit Triumphs On St Patrick’s Day St Patrick’s Day proved to be one of the most colourful ever witnessed in the North County. The sun shone spectacularly and everybody in the county seems to have been to one of the parades. We had a total of five parades, which ensured that there was a day of celebration seldom seen in the region. With parades in Balbriggan, Lusk, Rush, Skerries and Swords, the diversity of cultures and traditions of our people was there to be enjoyed by all. There was a fantastic turn out, both by those parading and those lining the routes. A huge number of children took part – from all sorts of sports, dance and community groups and pubs and restaurants all over the North County did a roaring trade, as families enjoyed the occasion. A remarkable aspect of the parades was the

By Patrick Finnegan absence of commercialism. They represented a triumph of community endeavour and displayed the wonderful work of local volunteer groups and residents associations. This imaginative flair was evident everywhere, with Rush providing a dazzling display of vintage cars which reminded us of a time long gone. Here, the evidence of community involvement was obvious. A similar theme was adopted in Skerries where the centenary of the 1911 census was commemorated. The residents of Skerries deserve special credit for this excellent parade. Swords also held a much welcomed parade after some years without one. The vast range of diversity was particularly evident here and the parade turned out to be a great success, attracting a huge attendance. Swords le chéile
deserve great recognition for the success of this parade, which we hope will be an annual event. Lusk and Balbriggan also provided a day to remember, with bands and street entertainment provided for all. Both towns were awash with the national colours and exuded pride in their locality. Once again the voluntary committees here take the kudos and show that creativity, flair and imagination combined with dedication and hard work are never far from the surface in the North County. This upbeat spirit will ensure that we can and will overcome all obstacles and have contributed hugely to making the North County the most desirable area of the country to live and the envy of all. We salute all our dedicated volunteers and community groups. See pages 10, 12 and 16 for our St Patrick’s Day colour pages.
Concerns For Metro North? The delivery of the crucial Metro North infrastructural project seemed less certain this week, following a less than compelling commitment to its future from the Department of Transport. The business community are certain to be disappointed with a ‘feeble’ response from the Transport Department to a direct question posed by this newspaper, related to the project’s future. When questioned about the current situation regarding the commencement of preliminary works on Metro North and if the project will definitely go ahead, the response was worrying. It said, “The Government will make a decision on Metro North when it has time to consider it fully. The Minister (Leo Varadkar) is currently familiarising himself with all aspects of his Transport brief, and no decision will be made at this stage.” This seems a far cry from the vocal pre-election utterances of the Fine Gael party, who were fully committed to Metro North and the
obvious benefits in will bring to the North County, and Swords in particular. These have been well documented in previous editions of this newspaper. It may well be a case of ‘First Night’ jitters, now that the public purse is within their grasp. Nevertheless, this latest Government line is set to cause concern within the business sector, who view Metro North as vital Leo Varadkar TD to the local economy. Minister Varadkar represents a large area of Swords, which will directly benefit from Metro North, yet he seems to be less than committed to the project at this stage. The silence from the Minister is deafening and particularly worrying.

Laneway Dispute Rumbles On In Balbriggan It’s only three feet wide at the entrance and 150 yards long, but the laneway at Hampton Woods and Bremore Castle continues to polarise residents' opinions. In our

By Bob McKenzie last edition of the County Leader, we featured the views of the residents from Bremore Castle. In response to this article, a number of residents from Hampton Woods expressed a different viewpoint. The local authority intends to extinguish this right of way and April 8th is the closing date for representations and objections to be made to the Council in a bid to stop them carrying this out. The Bremore Caste Residents' Association held a poll and the findings were supportive of their stance, despite child safety and anti social behavioural problems. The survey found that 70 per cent had no particular view with just 10 per cent backing the call for closure. Double that number felt the laneway should remain open as a thoroughfare for residents and neighbouring estates. The same survey in Hampton Woods showed that everyone, bar one person, voted to have the laneway closed. Local residents have enlisted the help and advice of local councillors to try and resolve the problem.Sandra Delaney of the Hampton Wood Residents Association has a young family and she and her husband bought their
house precisely because it was in a cul de sac. A few weeks ago. the Gardai were called to the lane, which is around 50 feet from the Delaney's' home, to deal with a burning motorbike. Sandra told the County Leader, "The laneway is attracting unsociable behaviour from teens. It's also not very safe for our children, I need eyes like a hawk to make sure the kids are safe." Sandra continued, "They congregate there at all hours and what’s even more disgusting is that the lane is often used as a urinal. It's disgusting when you think that young children play in the area." Various suggestions have been made by residents and local representatives alike. Former TD, Michael Kennedy suggested the lane be closed at nightime, but Martin Sweeney from the County Council suggested that would be expensive and highly unfeasible from a cost point of view. Now it will be up to the the politicians to make the call to settle a dispute which has rumbled on for the last six months and it will probably require the judgement of Solomon to settle it. Both sides have made their case, both have positives and negatives and the councillors must make a final decision on April 8th.

The competition was open to all schools in Balbriggan to mark the launch of the new Millfield Shopping Centre on 11th April. The competition required that the Time Capsules contained items that reflect the changing face of Balbriggan and the winning entries will be buried in the centre until 2031. St Molaga’s National School and Loreto Secondary School were declared the winners and both schools received a welcome €4,000 bursary for school equipment. St Molaga’s gave an insight into the styles and opinions of today with a ‘Passion for Passion’ booklet of photos of children in their favourite styles, vox pop interviews with the schoolchildren about life now and what it will

Council Approval For Skerries Project Widely Welcomed Local Fine Gael councillor, Tom O’Leary has expressed his delight at the approval of the Holmpatrick Cove project in Skerries. This project has received wide local support and is set to provide the seaside town with a tourism bonanza. O’Leary said, “I voted for the new leisure complex for Skerries which, in time, will provide excellent tourism and leisure facilities for Skerries residents and community groups, as well as sporting clubs in the area. Skerries has had a long tradition of welcoming tourists into our beautiful town and I welcome this project in these difficult economic times,” he said. This project will bring very welcome local jobs and revenue to Skerries. He continued, “I hope it will kick start a tourism revival in the town. When we had Red Island

Further Blow For Malahide Shuttle There was further bad news for commuters in Malahide recently with the news that the new National Transport Authority has turned down the application for a shuttle bus service in the town. Mark Hely Hutchinson of the Malahide Shuttle Project Group said, “We are appealing, and spelling out once more the case for the Malahide Shuttle, aware that the Department of Transport (DOT) refused the licence for the Shuttle in April 2010. They then refused the appeal in August. The responsibility for Bus Licensing moved to the new National Transport Authority (NTA) in
By Leslie Murphy December. Malahide Coaches submitted a new licence application to them just before Christmas. He continued, “We are disappointed to have to report that the NTA turned down the application. The refusal appears to be based on supporting Dublin Bus and to conflict with a number of public statements made by the NTA, for example, the needs of the public transport user will be paramount. “We are appealing, and spelling out once more the case for the Malahide Shuttle. We expect to hear the result of our appeal by early May.”

A local masterplan will be produced by professional planners in Planning department of the council in which they will address any planning concerns. Our figures Michael Kennedy suggested that O’Brien and Kennedy were to receive a lump sum of €99,215, with €9,140 per annum thereTD’s Pension: .............................. after. We are happy to provide amended figures, based on Oireachtas figures. As both men have served three plus years as a TD, they are actually due a total of As he is still a serving member €58,700 each. This figure breaks down as TD’s of the Oireachtas as a Senator, pension of €9,400, pension lump sum of €28,200, these payments do not apply termination lump sum of €15,400 and termination payments of €5,700. In the case of O’Brien, his appointment to the Seanad means he no longer qualifies for termination payments or lump sum. This seems Darragh O’Brien like a convoluted system and difficult to understand. who find it impossible to co-exist without violent disputes over the most mundane and trivial of topics. Fr Welsh, the local priest, takes it upon himself to try to recon-
cile the two brothers before bloody carnage ensues, but the effort takes a heavy toll on him. He makes the ultimate sacrifice to try to bring about peace between the
two and this results in an attempt at some form of reconciliation - but is it too late? Make sure you’re not too late and book your ticket for this exciting production.

pamper your mum this mothers day Where would we be without them, probably not born! Mothers are everything to us when we are small...our lives revolve around her. For everything that we need we call mum. To protect us from all perceivable dangers we want her around us. To take us out, we hold her arms. To kiss away our wounds, we run to her. And for a warm hug and love, we look for her. She is the focal point of our lives, the
greatest human being in the world or should we say divinity on earth. It doesn’t stop when you grow up she still fusses and it takes a lot to let you fuss over her. On the special occasion of Mother’s Day, pay tribute to your mother. Let someone else look after her for a change. Let her take some me time and
be pampered from head to toe. At Pure Escape the award winning beauty salon, you can get the perfect gift voucher of €100 worth of relaxing treatments with a bonus of a beautiful bouquet of flowers and a skincare care kit to help wipe away those many years of worry lines, absolutely FREE. Now that is some value for money and a gift your mum will surely love you for. If you fancy a real treat and some mum and daughter time you can choose 2 events which are part of the Love Your Mum programme at Pure Escape. If you are bringing your Mum out for the day on Sunday 3rd April, you can both get a free make up done by a professional make up artist before you go. All you have to do is book your free slot in advance. Both of you can get some great tips on how to hide those unwanted blemishes, emphasise your assets and how to get a flawless, finished make up. If this is not your cup of tea, then Skin Bar

Creating Musical Excellence B
orn in Antwerp, Belgium in 1947, harp maker extrordinaire, Jan Muyllaert settled in Ireland close to 40 years ago. Walking through the gate of his home in Ardbraccan, Navan, Co Meath, surrounded by conifer trees, I am struck by a sense of peace and solitude. With a warm handshake and arresting brown eyes, Jan leads me in to his workshop where I savour the smell of freshly cut wood. While making many musical instruments including guitars, violins and cellos, Jan is recognised as the pre-eminent designer and creator of Irish harps. Many of these harps are played in places as diverse as Japan and Anchorage, Alaska and their dulcet tones can be heard on albums, such as Shaun Davey's The Brendan Voyage and Clannad's Grainne Mhaol. Despite the current economic recession, Jan has orders for harps until the end of the year. An Irish harp has 'a distinctive feel, sound and weight' and each one is crafted by him personally, using Irish wood such as sycamore, walnut or cherry. Initially, Jan works on eight harps at a time, getting them to a particular point in the process and then working on each one individually. “As only God can make something perfect, each harp will have a minor imperfection that makes no difference to the playability or its appearance, but makes it personal and unique,” comments Jan. Contrary to my expectation, Jan did not grow up with music in his home. “There was a mandolin in the house, but it was never played. I started playing guitar in the '60s when I was 18 and fulfilled my term of duty in the Belgian army. For something to do, we made up a little band.” His musical taste is eclectic, 'once it's good,' he laughs. He enjoys

Heffernan music as varied as classical, Rory Gallagher, Queen, U2, and Shaun Davey, the traditional Irish composer. On leaving the army, Jan worked as a draftsman in Antwerp, and mixing with different people in this cosmopolitan city, he got to know and love Irish music. At this time he also started playing flamenco guitar. “I never had a proper flamenco guitar, but I always practised anyway,' he laughs. “Eventually I started performing my own songs and gigging three to four nights a week in a gypsy cellar in Antwerp on the way home from Art College. It often went on until three or four in the morning, but after three near death experiences from total exhaustion, I knew I had to do something. So I quit my job.” Jan arrived off the ferry in Rosslare in the late 1960s with his friend, Bob and they were welcomed in pubs the length and breadth of the country. “Bob played the banjo and I played guitar.” They hitched their way around Ireland for a few months often travelling with farmers, squashed between milk churns. “It was great craic, we didn't think too much about it, we just went for it. We had our own tent and pitched up wherever we liked,” he recalls. On their next trip, Jan and Bob stayed in Bed and Breakfast accommodation where they paid three pounds for a room and an extra fifty pence if we wanted a shower. “If you played in a bar, you got
your drinks free and when a hat went around at the end of the night, there'd always be loads in it.” In 1972 Jan settled in Ireland, marrying Marie Finnegan, who grew up next door to the home they've always lived in. He is deeply embedded in Navan life and in the 1990s coached basketball to teenage boys in St. Patrick’s School. This led to him training the Special Olympics basketball team, a role he has thoroughly enjoyed for the past 12 years. He is also a committed member of Navan's Arch Club for people with learning disability. The club celebrates its 25th anniversary in April this year. He is also involved in a 'top secret' project with transition year students in St. Pat's to be entered in next year's Young Scientists Exhibition. Predictably, it is a project to provide a service to less fortunate people in society. Jan's sense of social justice and social responsibility can be traced back to his refusal to make records in 1960s Belgium. While

working with wood to create musical instruments is one of Jan's greatest pleasures, another is water sports and over the years he has managed to merge these two pastimes, making boats, surf boards and canoes. Last year at the Art in Action festival run by the Philosophical Society of Ireland at Towney Hall near Slane, he built an 18 foot canoe in front of an audience and describes the experience as 'great fun.' Always challenging himself creatively, Jan cannot understand the notion of retiring, if you work at what you enjoy. His tall lean frame and silver grey hair neatly tied in a pony tail belie his true age. His life is bohemian, yet ordered. He works daily at his passion continuously striving to enhance the experience for both himself and his client. Never idle, he trusts in fate and achieves a sense of peace visiting St. Mary's Church in Navan. He has grasped chances and opportunities throughout his life, while maintaining a great degree of order, which he attributes to his Belgian upbringing. “It's in my blood,” he laughs, “there's nothing you can do, ye know,” his charming accented English peppered with this Irish idiom. His innate sense of order facilitates rather than debilitates his art. Leaving Ardbraccan as the sun begins to set, my heart feels lighter having met this fascinating man and his warm welcoming wife, Marie. A few days later Helen Davies' wonderful CD Chasing the Breeze, featuring her playing one of Jan's harps, arrives in the post from him, and listening to it certainly soothes the soul.

Scoil Íosa Embraces Seachtain Na Gaeilge It was 'Seachtain na Gaeilge' recently and in Pobal Scoil Íosa in Malahide, this was a great success. Many activities took place which allowed all of the students to take part as all were encouraged to speak 'as Gaeilge' during the week. The school was festooned with Irish decorations such as leprechauns, shamrocks and Irish flags. Lollipops and sweets were awarded to those students who spoke 'as Gaeilge'. Also, announcements were made to remind everybody that it was 'Seachtain na Gaeilge'. Many competitions were held, including posters in Irish for the first years. The winners were: Síofra Boyne, Sarah Lonergan, Emma Murtagh,
By Sophie Walsh and Dearbhla Ward
Luke McGahey, Laura Behn, Georgia Gaynor and Niamh Lynam. There were four Gaeltacht scholarships awarded, worth €350 each: Aideen Scriney and James Farrell won the Junior scholarships and Emma Ahern and Aoibhín Cullen won the Senior scholarships. What Every Woman Alexandra Corr - Santry Twenty two year old Alexandra Corr, (Alex) is currently in her final year studying at St Patrick's College, DCU. This bright young lady has decided that she wants to become a primary school teacher. She attended Corpus Christi primary and Maryfield College in Drumcondra. While she was in secondary school, Alex was involved in lots of fund raising for different charities and was a student at the Gaeltacht for three years during her time at secondary school. Alex told the County Leader, “I really enjoyed singing when I was growing up and took a special interest in Irish dancing. I danced with the Moran School of Irish Dancing for eight years. In this time, I performed in the Olympia and travelled to Boston for St Patrick’s Day to perform." Alex is the second eldest of four children and lives at home in Santry with her mum, Debbie and dad, Tony, her brother, Jonathan, 16 and a sister, Megan,19. She also has a beautiful Yorkshire Terrier called Rocky, whom she adores. Alex’s father is a practising counsellor and psychotherapist and has been heavily involved in volunteering for various charities through his life. These include the Samaritans and Console. Alex also wants to get involved in this charity as well as the charities the Rose of Tralee supports. Alex said, “I have been working in Bewely's of Grafton Street for the last four years part time, they are my sponsors for the festival. My sister Megan also works there and she is my best friend. This helps me to save money to travel, as I love to see new places and recently visited friends in Colorado. Working in Bewely's has helped me to make friends from all over the world and this is one of the reasons I want to enter the festival. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity." My motto in life is "Everything happens in life for a reason”.

My family and I have always watched the Rose of Tralee festival. My nannie, Theresa Carroll used to be a big fan also. It's one of those things like the Eurovision for us. I'm really looking forward to making new friends and doing a good job with the work the festival is involved in. Disgraceful Condition Of Road Condemned Fine Gael Councillor, Tom O’Leary has delivered a letter of criticism to the County Council regarding the decrepit state of the road from Naul to Oldtown, particularly as you enter Oldtown. “i have just travelled on this road and its absolutely incredible the state of disrepair of this road. Writes SiobhĂĄn Kinsella What is your goal when engaging in written communication? Every interaction from email, to your cover letter to your CV is an attempt to get in front of an employer to get your new job. Considering the competition is high and the prize is so great the sloppiness of written communication amazes most employers. The issues consistently mentioned are: spelling errors, incorrect tenses and “textâ€? speak. It is vital that you appreciate the nature of the relationship you are trying to create. This potential relationship is purely professional. language and communication is the only acceptable way forward. This over familiar style of communication is the reason most people’s CV’s and or cover letters never progress to interview. It is vital that you present yourself in a professional and grammatically correct fashion to give yourself the best possible chance at getting that interview. This principle applies just as much to interviews. Communication has changed fundamentally with the advent of SMS messaging and social media. How many children now salute their neighbours or elders with Mr / Mrs. This is fine in casual circumstances it does not apply to professional interaction. Old school professional etiquette still applies in job seeking and interview situations. Remember to have your CV checked by at least two people before sending it to anyone. Regardless of your confidence in your
correspondence always apply this rule. The stakes are high, the rewards are great and you only have one chance to make a first impression! Best Of Luck

Having a garden might be no big deal to many of us; however if your garden is nothing special, maybe it’s time to think again. There are so many advantages to having a garden. Not only is it a place to get away form the hustle and bustle of the house if you have a busy home, but it can be somewhere to relax. Big or small, turning your garden into an oasis doesn’t have to be a big deal. Some of us are

born with green fingers and for those, this is a great time to plan your garden for the year. After such a long and hard winter, that we have just endured, frost burnt lawns require tenderness to nurse them back. It has always been the biggest aim for a keen gardener to obtain the perfect lawn and many a Sunday afternoon has been spent mowing, weeding and feeding. Hard work will bring the rewards later on and all of the family can enjoy the benefits of a beautifully cared for garden. Early weed invasion should be plucked, get them before they seed and run riot. The benefits will be reaped in summer, relaxing with a BBQ burger in one hand and tipple of fancy in the other. Many a person who enjoys culinary experimentation will grow their own vegetables or herbs taking the creativity one step further. For those who favour brightness and colour, a flower garden is opted for which explodes in brilliance in spring and summer. Colourful perennials should be set in position, watered in and given a feed that will see them through the season. Treat them with TLC and they will return the favour with radiant displays of flowering colour later on.

Birthday Remembrance
Birthday Remembrance
When you went, you took my heart. For in my life you were the biggest part. Each day to you, I tried to show, just how much, I loved you so, there was so much you could not do, but I was always so proud of you, My daughter you were very strong, but here on earth you did not belong. So now our angel you fly high in the sky, you’re like a shooting star going by, you smile at us, just like the sun. I miss you Nicole my special one. Your broken hearted Mother, Lisa
Husband, Dad, Grandad, Do you see us, from above, can you feel it when we send up our love? Do you know how we miss you so, we wish that you did not go. You have left a space in every heart, but death does not keep us apart. It just makes us wait a while, till we see you and your smile, Until then be sure to know, just how much we love you so. Sadly missed by your loving wife Ann & all your family
My sister, my friend, If I had one wish today it would be to see you smile and hold you close and let you know how much I love and miss you so. Your loving sister Hope
