Local Schools Back Decision On Book Costs School principals around the North County have welcomed the decision by school book publishers to hold off on publishing revised textbooks for a four year period. This is a move which will surely ease ‘back to school’ costs for already hard pressed parents across the region in the years to come. This news has been confirmed to the County Leader by a spokesperson for the Department of Education and Science. The welcome news comes following a hugely successful Saint Vincent de Paul (SVP) petition, backed heavily by schools across our region, and meetings held between Education Minister, Ruairi Quinn, and the Irish Educational Publishers Association (IEPA) a number of weeks ago.

By Kieran Dunne Speaking to the County Leader, principal of St Finian’s Community College Swords, Ms Denise Kelly backed the plan saying, “We are also delighted that this commitment has been made. We run a very successful book rental programme in our school in order to ease the burden on parents and it is very popular, even though our Co-ordinator, Ms Jane Farrell, spends a lot of time on it, we feel the work is worth it in these difficult economic times.” Eddie Fynes, principal of Loreto Girls’ School in Balbriggan, Sharon McGrath, principal of Fingal Community College in Swords and Miriam Dowdall, principal of St

Helen’s JNS, Portmarnock, were of the same opinion. Ms McDowell said, “It is something we would definitely back, we have introduced our own system on a smaller scale where we would recycle books back into it yearly. Anything that cuts down costs for parents is most welcome,” she said. Mr Fynes added, “I’m totally supportive of this and we feel that there is no need for book companies to bring out revised editions, unless it is totally necessary. We are very conscious of handing down books from child to child. Similarly, Ms McGrath, welcomed the decision. “This agreement is just great and benefits everyone from students’ parents to teachers and staff. We have our own very successful book rental scheme, but this now means an improvement will be made both logistically and practically with the same books being made available over a four-year period,” she said. Denis Barry, President of St Vincent de Paul in River Valley told the County Leader, “We made strong representation to have the entire school book scheme reviewed. At last, the minister is seeing the light and putting pressure on the publishers to rethink,” he said. It now means that books can be passed on to younger siblings providing families across the County, with publishers agreeing not to produce any revisions to books within four-years of publication. Funds Donated To Kinsealy Centre By Jennifer McShane A long awaited community centre for the Kinsealy/Melrose area will be given some funding from the Swords Baptist Church as a thank you to the residents of the area. This comes as wonderful news as locals have spent more than 20 years campaigning for the project to go ahead. In June, the county council confirmed finance would be ring-fenced for the project. Through the local

The residents in Garristown Village recently enjoyed a free Summer Festival that was plenty of fun for all the family. Balloon modelers and face painters were on hand to entertain the kids and everyone throughly enjoyed the day. authority, a total of €1 million was donated by the Baptist Church and in return the church were given some land in Kinsealy to build a new complex of their own. The new community centre will inject life and vibrancy into the area and from a practical perspective, this will hugely benefit the youth of Kinsealy, which is growing in size all the time. They will now have their own facility to enjoy various activities and will no longer have to travel to Swords or Malahide to use other community centres. Speaking about the imminent project, a delighted Jim Keely, Chairman of the Melrose/Kinsealy Residents Association told the County Leader: “It’s wonderful that our residents will at last have their own centre. There really is a great need for this facility, particularly for our young people. We recently held a festival and for the second year running over 200 children signed up, so the demand for a centre has always been very apparent.” Continued on page 21

Eleven brave swimmers came along to join John and Josephine and their son to support this worthwhile cause. The distance between Lambay Island and Rush Harbour is 4.3 km, but the swimmers could not follow a straight line so most of them swam about 6 km or even more. It was extremely hard for them as the weather was not at all in their favour. Thomas and Teresa Fulham from Glassmore Park in Swords celebrated their milestone 50th wedding anniversary with their friends and family in the Carnegie Court. They first met in the Malahide Grand Hotel at a ballroom dance. Tom said once he saw Teresa it was love at first sight.

Tom asked her to dance and the rest, as they say, is history. “I was stuck” says Tom. “Like glue,” Teresa adds in. They married in 1961 in St Colmcille’s Church in Swords and have six children, Grace, Jean, Brian, Barbara, Judy and Liam and 10 grandchildren. Tom originally lived in Lusk and moved to Swords when they married, where Teresa lived all her life. He worked for Aer Lingus for over 25 years, being part of their tug-of-war team. The wonderful couple are as cheerful together now as they were when they first met in that ballroom and we wish them continued health and happiness.

The St Patrick’s Brass and Reed band in Balbriggan are looking for some help to celebrate their upcoming 35th anniversary. The band, which was re-established in 1976, are looking to mark their 35th year with a special concert later in the year but are looking to replace their uniforms in time for the show. The band is a nonprofit making organisation which relies solely on its members weekly subs and any small grants they can apply for. The group teaches music and supplies instruments to children for the small sum of €1.50 a week, giving them the opportunity to learn new music. They are calling on local residents and businesses to support their cause in any way they can. The band will be playing their special concert in the Town Hall in Balbriggan on November 9th and would greatly appreciate any donations.

As a local paper, North County Leader recognises the wonderful work and positive contribution being made by the numerous voluntary organisations in the North County and captures that with photographs which are much appreciated by those involved. It brings the experiences of the various groupings into the public domain and generates an enthusiasm for others to emulate. The paper is inclusive, covering the major issues and blends that quite successfully with business/trade advertising, sporting events and community achievements (and it is free). May I wish North County Leader continued success into the future.

17 Years Serving The Community Of North County Dublin We deliver In trying economic times, it is very reassuring to advertisers to know that adverts placed with the County Leader are far more likely to be read than in any other rival media. Another huge advantage we have over rivals is that we are the only newspaper that is based locally, with local staff. This gives the County Leader a distinct advantage in having their ‘finger on the pulse’ where local issues are concerned. The County Leader is always willing and ready to report on community spirit and endeavour. Indeed, there is no shortage of this in our area. A point in case was our coverage of the

Baby Jack campaign, which many of our readers will remember. This campaign gained t r e m e n d o u s momentum over many months and, thankfully, it had a happy outcome. We were very proud of our involvement in this very worthwhile cause. The willingness of everyone to pull together has been a hallmark of the North County and is a credit to all concerned. We have witnessed the arrival and demise of the ‘Celtic Tiger’ and have seen the wonderful road infrastructure that accrued at that time. Swords Heritage Festival 20

The much anticipated Swords Heritage Week is upon us at last. It all kicked off on Thursday last, 25th August and will continue until Saturday, 3rd September. This year marks the 25th year of celebrating the Heritage, Art and Culture of Swords. This annual celebration has continued since the very first one in 1987, when the first Swords Heritage Festival began as the former Dublin County Council’s project for the European Year of the Environment. From these humble beginnings, a voluntary

committee was set up and has continued over the years to present a programme of events, which is hoped will encourage an interest in the cultural and historical aspects of Swords and environs. The current economic downturn has provided an opportunity for artists, writers, story tellers and musicians to display their hidden talents. The committee decided to focus on giving them a forum to display their talents. The festival started on Thursday, 25th August last with a ‘Tell A Tale Day’ which is the theme for this year’s festival. Many stories from around the North County were regaled, all in the shadow of St Columba’s Round Tower and in the presence of County Mayor, Cllr. Gerry McGuire. Saturday was

If you have some sensitive plants in your yard such as cactuses or bulbs, it’s best to move them into the house to ensure they’ll survive the colder weather. Keep them in a dry room with constant temperature. Bulbs in particular should be wrapped up before storing them and kept away from insects.

MARBLE FIREPLACE WITH 6KW STOVE SUPPLIED & FITTED

During the summer season your plants will have consumed most of the nutrients from the soil. Now it needs compost and mulch to regenerate. You can add fertiliser to help this process along and this will encourage your plants to thrive. When mowing your lawns increase the height of the mower slightly. This prevents your lawn from becoming worn down due to the raking which will occur with all the leaves falling.

Sarah Hawkshaw is a budding young tennis star from Balbriggan and is an active member of Skerries Tennis Club, while also training at NZONE in Kinsealy. She has had a very enjoyable and successful summer, competing in a number of tournaments and is pictured above with the Cups she won for winning Under 10 sIngles at The Malahide Junior Open, The West Dublin Junior Open and the Shankill Junior Open. She also won the Under 12 Cup at the Meath Junior Open. Sarah loves playing tennis and is looking forward to training hard for the future.

St Vincent de Paul Need Volunteers The St Vincent de Paul (SVP) is one of the most recognisable charity organisations in the country and like all charities, is in need of extra volunteers. Denis Barry is President of St Vincent de Paul in River Valley and he explained the workings of the organisation. “Our prime function is as a visitation conference and we visit our clientele in their homes. It is a very privileged position to be invited to a person’s home,” he said. “People think that we only give money, but we also hand out materially, like objects that are required by a client and we work closely with other agencies in respect of referrals,” he said. Denis was keen to promote the new image of the organisation. “Years ago, people saw us as the last resort and in the gutter. We emphasise that nobody should be embarrassed to approach us for help. Our image today is much different and 100 per cent confidentiality is assured. The cornerstone of our actions is respect and dignity of the person,” he said. The Dublin North County conference runs from Swords to the Meath border, both north and west. Dublin North has 75 members and about 2,500 clients and still growing. In Swords alone, there are 28 members and a clientele of around 500, so the need for volunteers is obvious. “Our call rate in Swords is up by 38 per cent since last year,” said Denis. To become a member, simply ring SVD Headquarters in Sean McDermott Street at 01-8550022 and mention your desire to become a volunteer. The next meeting will be held there on 8th September at 6.30pm. Everything collected locally is distributed locally, without exception, which also benefits the local economy as well.

RTÉ’s Weather Presenter Nuala Carey will launch Fingal Volunteer Expo on Thursday 1st September in The Pavilions Shopping Centre, Swords from 12 noon until 8pm. This event is being organised as part of Fingal Volunteer Centre’s activities for The European Year of Volunteering 2011. The first Volunteer Expo 2011 took place in Blanchardstown in March. Fingal Volunteer Centre is a one-stop shop for voluntary activity, providing volunteering opportunities for the public, sourcing much needed volunteers for organisations and providing support for organisations in managing volunteers. A total of 21 organisations, who are currently recruiting volunteers in the greater North County area will be present looking to recruit new volunteers to join them this Autumn. Fingal Volunteer Expo 2011 is aimed at helping organisations in attracting people who are interested in becoming volunteers, but who may not know exactly where or how to go about it. It is just one of many services provided free to volunteer involving organisations across the county. “This is a great opportunity for organisations to showcase their volunteer opportunities and let the

Funds Donated To Kinsealy Centre Continued from page 1 The association are currently waiting for the plans to be drawn up and are hopeful that work will start on the centre as soon as possible. It will form part of a ‘community campus’ in what will be another boost for the area following the construction of a new

building for Scoil on Duinninigh and the granting of permission for the new Baptist complex. “The residents are delighted that the project will finally be going ahead and it will mean great things for all the residents in the Melrose/Kinsealy area,” he concluded.

community know about the work they do. Also to network with other organisations; and get to engage with Fingal Volunteer Centre and develop new opportunities,” said Stuart Garland, Manager Fingal Volunteer Centre. Volunteers are very welcome to come along on the day and find out more about volunteering in 2011. Alternatively, you can drop into one of their nine outreach venues in the Fingal Libraries. If you’d like to register as a volunteer, or simply want to view the opportunities available, log onto our web site www.volunteerfingal.ie.

A large crowd turned out for the Balbriggan Food Festival recently, to sample the finest food Balbriggan has to offer. Live bands and a brass and reed band entertained the crowds, while the public sampled over 20 different food stalls, watched live cooking demonstrations with professional chef, Stephen Grimes and enjoyed the great atmosphere. The mobile petting farm was a big hit with the children, who also got their faces painted and partook in arts and crafts. The event was organised by a sub committee of Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce. Speaking to the County Leader, Manager of the Bracken Court Hotel George O'Gara said, “The event is a great success, our sea food chowder made by our hotel chef has been flying out the door.” Pictured at the event is Cathaoirleach of Balbriggan Town Council, Grainne Maguire with Amanda Madden from Country Crest, based in Lusk who produce ready meals.
