Residents Expected To Endure Appalling Conditions The long awaited Pyrite Panel Report has been given a broad welcome by pyrite sufferers throughout the North County area. Work has been progressing in many estates and the hope is that normal life will resume for many people. This, however, is not the case for residents of Talbot House Apartments in Drynam Estate, Kinsealy, who are being driven to dementia by the noise of the diggers and heavy machinery being used to repair the pyrite problem in their apartment block. The repair works are taking place in the lower floor of the block, and the residents here have been relocated. The residents of the upper floors, however, have not been offered relocation by the developer, Menolly Homes and this has caused them huge distress and anger.

By Patrick Finnegan One of the residents, Oonagh Sheehan contacted the County Leader and invited us to see, at first hand, the devastation caused to residents in the apartment block. When this reporter arrived at Ms Sheehan’s apartment, the interview had to be carried on outside, due to the relentless, deafening noise level. She said that many attempts to contact Menolly Homes had been ignored. “We only discovered that Menolly’s contractors, Showglade were commencing remedial works on Talbot House on Monday 23 July last, through speaking with one of our neighbours on the ground floor. The last communication I received from Menolly was in September 2011 telling us that the works were scheduled to commence on 12 November 2012,” she said. “After numerous attempts to contact them when we found out they were coming on site, they repeatedly ignored emails and phone calls and eventually, one week before commencement, they sent two representatives to meet with us to discuss the works.” She continued: “At the end of this meeting, it was agreed that we would have a follow up meeting and we also sent documentation to Menolly listing our concerns and requirements and again, to date, despite numerous attempts to contact both representatives and Menolly, they have declined to have the meeting, answer a single phone call and refused to respond to voicemails or emails,” she said. She is fully in support of the remedial works being carried out, but is angry at the lack of consideration shown by Menolly Homes. “We

Big Hearted Nifti Drivers Support Chernobyl Children It’s very refreshing and satisfying to be able to report on an event that restores your faith in humanity. This came about last week, when the generosity of Nifti and it’s bus drivers came to light. Community based transport organisation, Nifti, which will celebrate it’s 10th anniversary later in the year, has proven to be a tower of strength for the Chernobyl Children’s International Group (CCI). The company has provided free transport for the children to events during their stay in Swords and surrounding areas. Big hearted Nifti drivers have provided their time and services free of charge to the organisation, who need regular

fundraising to continue their great work. The drivers were only too happy to oblige the kids. Drivers, Mick Kavanagh and Mick McDonagh spoke of their pleasure at being able to contribute to this wonderful cause. They told the County Leader: “We collected them at Shannon Airport and brought them back there for their return flight. We were delighted to be able to do so. We also brought them to Fort Lucan Adventure area, Finglas Fire Station, Clontarf to visit a circus and Tayto Park in Ashbourne, where they really had a ball.” Teina Gilchriest, North Dublin CCI Group Leader was full of praise for Nifti and it’s big hearted drivers. “The drivers have been brilliant and we don’t know ourselves, due to their generosity. Their contribution has been outstanding. We want to thank Nifti and the drivers for all the support they have shown CCI. This is an outstanding example of community spirit at it’s brilliant best, where people haven’t lost sight of what’s important in life. Well done to all.

Malahide Cricket Club held it's annual Summer Camp last week. A total of 170 kids enjoyed the free coaching and instructions from the experts. Launch Of Balbriggan Street Olympics A new sporting event is coming to Balbriggan as part of a Community Gardaí initiative to stem antisocial behaviour in the area. The Balbriggan Street Olympics event was launched recently by Olympic Gold Medal winner, Michael Carruth in the Bracken Boxing Club. Street Olympics is being brought to Balbriggan as part of an initiative undertaken by Community Gardaí Dave Sheeran and Kate Daly Ní Bhrion and proudly supported by Balbriggan Town Council and the County Council. The initiative has been successfully rolled out by Dublin City Council so Balbriggan Community Gardaí Dave and Kate decided to bring it to the North County, where Balbriggan is the first town to

host Street Olympics. The event will be held on the 6th of August next in Balbriggan Town Park from 12 noon to 3pm. It will include Olympic sports such as Athletics, Archery, Shot Putt, Soccer, Boxing and also some sports played on a Wii game console. Speaking at the launch Garda Dave Sheeran said: “We are running this event to bring the young people of the town together in an effort to make them aware that there are alternatives to participating in antisocial behaviour and also to promote the facilities and amenities available to the youth in Balbriggan.” Fingal County Scouts are supporting the event by bringing in 30 scout leaders from around the

County to help chaperone teams participating in the sporting activities on the day. Scouts from Balbriggan, Skerries, Rush and Swords will be guiding the teams and supervising the activities, which will ensure things run smoothly for all involved. It promises to be a great day for participants and prizes will be presented on the day.

There was a widespread welcome for the news that Swords Sewage Treatment Plant is to be given a €23 million upgrade. Local TD, Brendan Ryan (Lab) has welcomed the approval from the Department of Environment for funding to allow the County Council to award a contract for the upgrade. This news comes hot o n t h e h e e l s of the proposal to build a Monster Sewage Plant in the North County, with Lusk being home to two of the three locations. Locals have maintained all along that the new plant will not service a single home north of Dublin Airport. The upgrade of the Swords plant would appear to give

credence to this belief. The upgrade will increase the existing capacity of the Swords Waste Water Treatment Plant from 60,000 population equivalent (p.e) to 90,000 (p.e.). Once completed, this contract will allow for the lifting of restrictions on development in the Swords area, currently hindered due to inadequate drainage infrastructure. It will also ensure compliance with the anticipated effluent license standards and Water Framework Directive objectives for the Broadmeadow Estuary, a vital natural resource for migratory birds. Ryan said: “I call on the Council to award the contract for these works as soon as possible and for the

Cultivation Of GM Potatoes Opposed News that genetically modified potatoes are to be grown experimentally in Ireland is not good news and has been condemned by local Green Party representative, Lorcan O’Toole. He said: “Ireland has a well deserved and enviable reputation as a green, clean, rich foodgrowing country. In part, that is because we have so far avoided growing genetically modified crops. The North County, in particular, has a very valuable reputation to protect. With most of the country’s vegetable production coming from this area, any possibility of the region’s image being tarnished must be avoided. With farming and horticulture showing tentative signs of recovery and a strong food export business, we must do everything we can to help this sector. GM is not the answer. It is another problem, not a solution“, said O’Toole. He continued, “This decision is short-sighted, regretful and ill-advised. The government is selling us down the river and once we set off, there is no turning back.” GM is a technology that offers great hope in combating serious plant diseases but there are very serious drawbacks. The plan to grow potatoes, genetically modified to resist potato blight may seem attractive to some people, but we need to understand the consequences and dangers before we welcome such developments.” “There are real and justified concerns among opponents of GM that such artificially engineered organisms (GMO’s) will escape into the wild and upset the balance of nature. These specially created crops will have an advantage over their unmodified equivalents and could potentially destroy native species. Another concern is that nobody knows the long-term harm that GM foods may do to the food chain and, ultimately, human health. work to proceed with a minimum of delay.” Local deputy Alan Farrell (FG) said: This investment bodes very well for the Swords area as there will be a huge potential for job creation, as well as alleviating pressure on local infrastructure. “On completion, this will bring Swords back to the forefront of business, and will allow us to consolidate our existing community. Fears For Future Of Food Extravaganza Lusk Waste Watch group, who are active campaigners against the proposed new Monster Sewage plant being built in Lusk, have commented on the irony of the council staging the ‘Flavours of Fingal’ festival on 21st and 22nd July last. Local campaigner, Lorcan O’Toole commented: “It’s ironic that at the same time the council is plotting to build a huge sewage plant in the heart of horticultural North County Dublin, they have also promoted Fingal food. It’s great to see a

proposal. They have so far ignored the very real and justifiable concerns of the very people they are meant to serve. They have admitted that they have not even given any consideration to the issue of the burden on the community. They don’t seem to be listening and seem hell-bent on imposing this horror on a village that has done more than its fair share already. If the final selected site is in Lusk, there will be a very serious response from the people. We simply cannot accept our village being sacrificed like this.” Many residents believe that the siting of a Monster Sewage Plant in the heart of this rural community, and the staging of the highly successful Flavours of Fingal festival are incompatible.

Originally from Lagos, Nigeria, she’s been here since 2000 and has gradually come to think of Ireland as home. She is the leader of North County Women Migrant Workers group and is working to ensure that women in local areas can have their grievances aired. “I came in search of a better life for myself and my family, that was the key thing that brought me here,” she tells County Leader. She had trained as an accountant and had been working in a stockbroking and investment firm. Adaku and her husband, who is a medical doctor, were blessed with the births of their daughters Nicole, Gabrielle and Michelle. So far she has lived in Navan, Kilcormack (Co Offaly) and Portlaoise before settling in North County Dublin. “I couldn’t even think about getting back to a career, rather than odd jobs, until about 2005, and by then all I could get was a FÁS course in insurance. I enjoyed it though. It was an eight-month course with eight weeks’ work experience.” As the job opportunities for either of them became scarce, Adaku and her husband had to face hard decisions. “I moved to Dublin, he was still trying to get a position here, but finding suitable work commensurate with his experience wasn’t straightforward. I was happy to stay here, but he went back to Nigeria. It was stressful, it was very confusing for the kids, but we managed.” She joined the Dublin branch of the New Communities Partnership, first by attending workshops and courses it ran. “It was NCP that first spotted the gap in its own services,” she says, of her newest ‘baby’ – chairing a support group for women. “When this role in Women’s Space came up, they felt I was the right person to take it on and I’ve been the chair of the committee since January this year. “It’s an information-sharing group for migrant women that meets on the first Friday morning of each month to air the concerns, take practical steps to help those women who need it and so far has attracted ladies not just from Africa, but EU nationals too. “Some of the issues would be talking about grants and citizenship, some of the women are lone parents and need advice on how the new laws will affect them. And then more need to simply meet other women with the same challenges they’re facing and are providing mentorship to newer arrivals in Ireland,” she said. The educational background of Adaku’s group varies from highly qualified academics (lawyers, those holding doctorates) to business-savvy women who successfully ran their own businesses at home and are keen to do the same thing here. Some are mums who work outside the home, others are women whose relationships with partners or children who are thriving here mean that they’ve to find new ways to achieve their personal goals. “Women’s Space offers moral support as well as prac-

tical,” says Adaku. “A lot of non-Irish women would still lack the confidence to network, many of us still feel that we can’t achieve as much as similar Irish women because we’re outside of what we know. So Women’s Space gathers these migrant women together to find out how we can help each other.” One of the first challenges Adaku’s group had to sort out was finding the issues that are common to all new immigrants. “Our parent group NCP can provide citizen application support, while we’re more focused on more immediate opportunities that are available, such as courses and training. “If some of them have small businesses we can help them find “incubating new business” avenues where they can get supports for that. If it’s the first time a woman’s ventured outside of her immediate family needs and wants to learn or improve her English we find them language teachers. “NCP has been very involved in advocacy issues; it could be asylum issues, residency issues, NCP can represent them even at the highest levels. “But our Women’s Space workshops are smaller, it’s amazing what someone from Poland for instance can share with a Nigerian, and we take it from there. It’s the little things that help people bond and connect, she says. One quick example she offered is the shared sense of exasperation for foreign women seeing the ‘help the third world’ television campaigns that can oversimplify or even ignore their own world view. “We’re resilient, we’re strong, we’re dynamic providers for our families, we’re used to being resourceful and being seen as resourceful, so it can be a relief for us to study with and befriend other women who share the same feelings and experience. She says: “It’s a very fluid organisation, it’s adaptable – things may be heading in one direction today and tomorrow takes off in a different direction – we’re here to help negotiate that change.” In May, Adaku was chosen to represent NCP in Athens at a conference promoting positive integration processes. “Even though Greece and Ireland share similar economic woes and a bleak budget situation Ireland continues to focus on integration with the introduction of a Ministerial Council of Integration in 2010, unlike Greece whose government does not recognise integration at all,” she reports. “Due to the current economic downturn most migrants have lost their jobs and are left to live from hand to mouth as social welfare is barely existent. Most women find themselves in vulnerable situations and without any chance of professional development.” The conference touched her in unexpected ways, she says. “The gloomy faces, tired eyes and tears of some of the participants told the whole story of their journey. It was quite an emotional day for everyone but at the end of it all I returned to Ireland more motivated to continue to support women empowerment initiatives.” “Personally, I’d like to take Women’s Space a little step forward, I’d like to create a sort of buddy-system for them, and give anyone with problems someone to call afterwards to follow up. Sort of a sisterhood.”

“Things may be heading in one direction today and tomorrow takes off in a different direction – we’re here to help negotiate that change.”

Launch of 1912 Olympics Memorabilia Portmarnock Scouts “They don’t make ‘em like that anymore” could have been the theme for an event at the County Council’s Local Studies and Archives in Swords recently. The occasion was the launch of an exhibition on the Irish competitors at the 1912 Olympics. Sports historian, Paul Harris gave a talk on Ireland’s Olympic heroes and guest of honour was Mr. Harry Boland, who represented Ireland at the last London Olympics in 1948, as part of the basketball team.

Kingdom, the USA, and South Africa, travelled from a variety of counties to attend the launch of the exhibition. Over 200 swimmers took to the water at the Dublin Community Games

County Swimming Finals which were held in Tallaght Sports Complex. There were swimmers from Ballyboughal this year - their first time entering the swimming competition. With swimmers aged from 6-16 years, some taking part in their first ever competition, each participant represented their local area with pride. The heats, semifinals and finals of the Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Butterfly events were hotly contested with nothing but a touch of the wall between placings. Gold medal winners will now represent Dublin at the HSE Community Games National finals in August. North County winners included : Jamie O’Brien from Ballyboughal in the Boys Under 8 Freestyle, Eoghan McDonald (Skerries) in the Under 12 Breaststroke and Hannah McMenamin (Skerries) in the Girls Under 16 Freestyle. We wish them well in August. The best overall area prize went to St. Judes who narrowly finished ahead of Skerries.

Hanna Groh

With another disappointing summer weatherwise upon us, the County Leader sent our intern from Germany, Hanna Groh to catch the mood of the public in Swords, to see how the weather has affected their plans.

Dorota Cackowska, from Poland and lives in Swords “This kind of weather is usual for me. I don’t think that it is too bad. I actually think it’s really warm.”

Dermot Weldon, Swords “The weather is like absolutely rubbish like the whole weather in Europe. It’s always raining. You can’t go anywhere, you can’t bring the children anywhere like to the park. It is a really poor summer.”

Antoni Kiser, from Poland and works in Swords “I am surprised about the weather, because it was very rainy lately. I love it now, it’s warm and nice.”

Ciara Keating, Swords “I got away on holidays. So coming home it wasn’t a big shock. I suppose it does affect my mood, but I’ve grown up here, so I’m completely used to it. This is actually perfect weather, this is what we’ve got used to.”

Suzanne Horan, Malahide Road “I don’t feel very good about the weather. I’d rather it to be cold. It feels too hot all the time, it’s too gloomy.“

Sara Fernandez, from Spain is working here as an Au Pair “The weather is really bad. I am a little sad about it because in Spain, the weather is always sunny and warm in summer.”

Dermot Smyth, Swords Suzanne Marron, Malahide Road “The weather changes, but what’s to do?”

Premila Grabarczyk, Swords “It was raining a lot so I couldn’t bring my children outside. I have a two year old son, he wants to go outside all the time and I have to tell him no. I’d rather go to Spain and spend my summer holidays there.”

Gavin O’Reilly, Donabate “It’s been unpredictable so you can’t really plan what you want to do.”

Victoria Morozova, Castleknock “Because of the weather, I couldn’t go outside like to the park. But next week we’re going to Ukraine for our summer holidays and spend our time at the sea while enjoying the sun.”

“The weather has been really bad and it has affected the people. They’re actually unsure about where to go or what to do. They are staying in more. So basically this is not going to help the people who own shops, or people who want to go to caravan sites, go fishing, play tennis or other kind of things.”

Kylie Chong, Swords “It’s really nice weather. It’s really fantastic because it was bad the last couple of days. So I do feel great about the weather now.”

Justyna Kozanecka, Applewood - Swords “The weather wasn’t really good this summer, so we had to stay mostly at home. But now we are going to Poland for our holidays, hopefully the weather will be better there.”

Lukasz Matysiak, Swords “The weather is great and sunny. I can spend the whole time outside with the kids and play. I really enjoy it. I’m happy that the sun came out and that the rain stopped.”

Ashlee Rocliffe, Swords “Well, now and again it has lovely bright weather, but the next day it just starts lashing rain. So it’s on and off. It’s hot weather one day, bad weather the other day. But we kind of get used to it. We don’t know what to expect. I still try to enjoy myself in any kind of weather.”

Samantha Gibbons, Swords “I think it’s really warm at the moment, even though it’s not sunny and like it’s too hot to sleep at night time. I just got back from my holidays for two weeks in Orlando, so I’m still on my summer holidays, so it’s not bothering me too much.”

Lisa Miller, Swords “As it has been so wet, it has been very difficult with the children, because we couldn’t go outside a lot. But as soon as it’s dry we leave the house and get out there and do something.”

Stephen Agbaje, Swords “I am enjoying the sun now. The weather is brilliant, so I can come out and can take a walk through the park.”

John Hales, Swords “The weather hasn’t really affected my summer. It’s like every year, it hasn’t changed since I was a child. I’ve gotten used to it and you can still bring your kids to indoor places rather than to the park or beaches.”

Angela de Barra, Dublin “I am living in Frankfurt at the moment and it rained a lot recently. I’ve only arrived in Ireland yesterday, so I am really glad to see that the sun is shining.”

Dana Kairish, Swords “I think the summer has been quite good. As soon as it’s sunny nearly everyday and if you get up early enough it’s always sunny. The summer was and is still good.”

Shay Byrne, Swords “The weather has been atrocious. Everyone is more or less depressed. But it’s very nice this week. When the sun comes out it’s much better.”

CASTLE MILL FAMILY BUTCHERS Where Customers Come First In this day and age of unprecedented choice for shoppers, it is heartening to know that many people still revert to their local area to do their shopping. Community involvement and the all important personal touch are regarded as reasons for this. This is certainly true in the case of David Flood, who recently acquired Castle Mill Family Butchers in Castle Mill Shopping Centre in Balbriggan. This is a completely new business under new management and not to be confused with the previous butcher in the area. “We decided to keep the name ‘Castle Mill Family Butchers’ and we are delighted to bring exciting new products at the keenest prices and best quality in the area,” said David. “I’d been looking for a shop in the area for the last while, and when the old Castle Mill Family Butchers ceased trading, I knew the area needed a quality butcher and I jumped at the opportunity,” he said. David, a native of Skerries has been living in Balbriggan for the past seven years and knows the area intimately. “I served my time with Noel Cross in Skerries. He had a butchers shop and slaughter house and he trained most of the butchers in the town. I started as a messenger boy at 14 years of age and afterwards, I went to work for Caulfield’s in Malahide. After this, I managed Eurospar in Applewood in Swords for four and a half year, after which I worked in Drogheda and

He outlined some of the main differences between Castle Mill Family Butchers and other butchers. “We only sell beef under 30 month old and it is hung for 21 days before it arrives in the shop. This ensures quality, tenderness and flavour.” David has noticed a trend among shoppers in the short time since he opened his shop. “People are returning to the traditional butchers, where they are guaranteed personal service, top quality produce, all at the keenest prices around. if one of my customers comes in looking for something I don’t have in stock, I will guarantee that I

Too many being needlessly 'de-feeted' by Diabetes There are believed to be 250,000 people with diabetes in Ireland and one third of these are thought to be undiagnosed . The New York Times (August 20, 2007) reported 'Although the health implications of diabetes are clear, researchers are still struggling to understand many of the aspects of the disease. One question being asked is why most people with type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese, when most overweight or obese people are not diabetics? The fat cells themselves may offer a clue. These cells release triglycerides and free fatty acids into the blood, which may decrease cells ability to respond to insulin, thereby increasing the body’s demand for the hormone. Paradoxically, another hormone, adiponectin, is also made by fat cells, and this hormone makes cells more responsive to insulin. According to Dr. C. Ronald Kahn, a diabetes researcher and professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, the fatter you are, the less adiponectin your fat cells produce. Therefore, one way obesity might increase your risk of developing diabetes is by an increased release of fatty acids, combined with a decline in adiponectin, which would lead to more insulin resistance. If your body’s demand for insulin cannot be met, diabetes eventually sets in.

Diabetic foot wounds are one of the major complications of diabetes and an excellent example of the type of complicated wound which can be treated with hyperbaric oxygen. It is well known that many diabetics suffer circulatory disorders that create inadequate levels of oxygen to support wound healing. Diabetic wounds present a major problem for modern health care. The foot is the most common site of infection in the diabetic. For diabetic patients, foot problems remain the number one reason for hospital admission.. The therapeutic use of oxygen under pressure is known as hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) and has been used to assist wound healing for almost 40 years. HBOT has several specific biological actions which can enhance the healing processes: • Oxygen used under pressure (hyperbaric oxygen) can assist wound healing. • can be used successfully in hypoxic or ischemic wounds such as diabetic, venous stasis ulcers, failing grafts and flaps, necrotising soft tissue infections and refractory osteomyelitis. • In wound healing, hypoxia is

an insufficient supply of oxygen which prevents normal healing processes. HBOT provides the oxygen needed to stimulate and support wound healing. • HBOT is able to combat clinical infection such as gas gangrene by acting directly on anaerobic bacteria, enhancing leukocyte and macrophage activity and potentiating the effects of antibiotics. • HBOT is a safe non-invasive, non-toxic therapy. Hypoxia (lack of oxygen) can be defined as an insufficient supply of oxygen to allow the healing process to proceed at a normal rate. In a typical wound care treatment, hyperbaric oxygen is capable of providing tissue oxygen levels of greater than 11 times normal values. Most chronic wounds are hypoxic and HBO provides the oxygen needed to stimulate and support wound healing. In properly selected patients with hyperbaric oxygen treatment the success rate is high and there are few absolute contraindications. HBOT in properly selected cases, has been effective in preventing amputations, speeding up healing of chronic ulcers and fistulae, saving threatened skin flaps and permitted surgery that would not have been possible without it. This in turn results in improved quality of life for patients. The incidence of amputa-

tion in diabetics remains unacceptably high: 6 per 1,000 patients. Diabetics account for 50 - 70 percent of all amputations performed each year. 10% of those surgeries resulted in the loss of a foot, 35% involved the loss of a lower leg, and 30% resulted in the loss of the knee joint. Ipsilateral or higher amputation occurs in 24% of cases. Diabetic amputees also experience other difficulties. Only 50% of the patients survive more than 3 years after the amputation (USA survey data). Although many individuals who lose limbs traumatically can expect to be rehabilitated to full activity, only 40 - 50% of elderly amputees can expect to enjoy such a successful outcome. The duration of hospitalisation for treatment of diabetic foot infections averages 22-36 days. Amputation offers a poor solution. Patients pay high personal costs when limbs are lost. When an amputation occurs, patients generally remain hospitalised for 40 days and to maximise walking ability or potential, patients may need an additional 6-9 months of rehabilitation. Many elderly diabetic amputees remain bound to wheelchairs for the rest of their lives because they lack sufficient energy, balance, and strength to walk.

Diabetic Ulcers and Amputations Canada's national newspaper, the Globe and Mail, dedicated an entire front page to an article by reporter Christine Blatchford which highlighted the fact that that 70% of amputations due to diabetic complications need never have taken place if HBOT had been used to treat them. The article said, "Since 2001, there have been four randomised, controlled clinical trials of HBOT on diabetic ulcers - the gold standard in evidence-based medicine. All studies found either markedly fewer amputations with patients who received HBOT compared to those who didn't, or enormously improved healing."

T h e a r t i cl e q u o t e d D r. G a r e y o f U t a h ' s Lakeview Hospital saying sadly, "Part of it is politics; part of it is that doctors are not exposed to it in residency and what they're not exposed to, they're leery of. I run into tha t when I lecture a t the university ... I al ways reply, “How man y of the 39,000 articles have you read?" He said that in his six years of hyperbaric medicine, he has treated "dozens of people who were told they need amputation, and we were able to save their limbs." Given that most diabetics facing amputation are older, Dr Garey said, saving their legs "is a tremendous quality-of -life issue.

A Skerries based garden designer has scooped a Silver Gilt Medal at one of Britain’s top competitions at Tatton Park near Manchester. Stephen Dennis impressed judges with a unique entry to the show. His creation ‘Remount’ combines a modern contemporary look with a classic barn. It is the latest success which has put Ireland at the forefront of contemporary garden design. Stephen explains: “Remount combines tradition with a new ‘chic’ and boasts a living chandelier as one of its highlights. Inspiration has been Skerries award winning garden taken from the shape designer, Stephen Dennis celeand materials of the brates taking the silver medal barn, which was at Tatton Park. made from old Cheshire brick, cobbles and partially rendered walls with overgrown ivy.” he said. An ornamental tree and the living chandelier of sky planters hanging over a patio table makes the garden the place for the in-crowd to chill out in the outdoors. An ornamental tree in purple together with a meadow of herbaceous perennials and grasses in purple, green and white completes the display. A living wall with trailing plants adds to the modern feel and helps create an area where people can relax and forget everyday pressures. Stephen is one of a number of Irish designers leading the field in contemporary garden design. Last year he also took the Silver Medal after impressing the judges with his entry ‘Breath’ which centred on a patio with ponds and a giant glass cube giving a modern area for relaxing and entertaining.

Young Boy Bids To Buy Real Train A four-year-old boy bid the equivalent of £15,000 to buy a real train from public transport officials in New Zealand. Metlink thought its dreams had come true when it received an opening bid of $29,990 for the old train. But it turned out the bid on the auction website was from an enthusiastic child whose mother was alarmed at the prospect of owning a full-sized two-carriage train.

Design Team For New Mental Hospital Appointed The County Council ramped up it's activity in it’s “Bin it your way” campaign in the high-profile national Gum Litter Taskforce awareness campaign. County Mayor Cian O’Callaghan highlighted the need for the people of the North County to continue and increase the level of awareness of gum litter and it’s responsible disposal. They distributed gum wraps and other campaign materials to visitors to the Pavilions Shopping Centre, Swords. Pictured are County Mayor, Cian O'Callaghan, with Ian Hunter (Pavilions Centre Director), Deirdre King (Advertising and Promotions Manager, Pavilions), PJ Howell (County Council), and members of Swords Tidy Towns committee.

Minister for Health, James Reilly TD has welcomed the announcement of the appointment of a design team for a new Central Mental Hospital in Portrane. The facility is to include a state of the art National Forensic Hospital, a Forensic Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit, a Forensic Mental Health Intellectual Disability Unit and an Intensive Care Rehabilitation Unit. The Hospital will provide low, medium and high secure mental health care. Construction works are expected to commence in 2014 and will take two years to complete. He said: “This major capital project is a welcome development in Dublin North. The building of a new Central Mental Hospital is a vital alignment with the HSE’s national policy, “A Vision for Change”, that sets out the direction for mental health services in Ireland. The advancement of mental health services is a major priority for both myself and for this government.”

Airport Launches Electric Car Charging Points

Pictured enjoying the Agricultural Machinery section at the Flavours of Fingal Show at Newbridge Demesne on Saturday, 21st July are Colum and James MacQuale from Donabate.

Drivers of electric cars will now be able to power up at Dublin Airport following the installation of five new charging points. Three electric car parking spaces with

charging units are located in the T2 multistorey car park. A further two spaces have been provided in the Executive Car Park at Level 1, T2 multi-storey car park. The new

facility means that motorists can top up while meeting or seeing off passengers in the terminal, or they can fully recharge their vehicles if staying longer. The initiative is a joint venture between Dublin Airport and the ESB to encourage a greater use of electric cars and to promote environmental sustainability. The T2 units are located on Level 1 of the multistorey car park. Fully recharging an electric car from zero typically takes between four and five hours.
