Donabate Woman Shortlisted In Photography Competition Linda Foley from Donabate has been chosen as one of three finalists in the Canon Ireland photography contest. The competition was open to amateur photographers around Ireland and aims to help budding photographers to take their work to the next level. Entrants were tasked with capturing the essence of their home town or county, showing a unique insight into their area that won’t have been seen before. Linda focused on the scenic views and nature of her local area in Donabate and the wider Dublin area. Linda will now go on to the final stages of the competition, where she will have to shoot five photos that continue this theme. The winner will be announced at a Gallery Showcase event on 10th September at a city centre location. Commenting, Jonathan Sultan, Marketing Manager of Canon Ireland, said: “We are delighted to announce the finalists of this competition, and really feel we have discovered some very talented photographers throughout the process. The entries were testament to the fact that, though we all take quick snaps on our phones now, there is really no comparison to the quality and possibilities when using a camera. The talent in the competition was outstanding and it’s wonderful to see Dublin scenery captured by Linda.”
The news that marine conservationists have attacked overfishing in the Irish Sea and warned of an impending ecological disaster, has been rubbished by a leading fisherman here in the North County.
By Patrick Finnegan Scientists say ocean floor habitats are at high risk of deterioration because of “unsustainable” prawn trawler fishing, which is indiscriminately depleting other types of marine life. Given that marine life plays a significant role in the lives of many families here in the North County, the County Leader spoke to David Price of Rockabill Shellfish Ltd in Balbriggan. He is a member of one of the most respected fishing families in the North County, and he poured scorn on the scientists’ assertions that overfishing was having a detrimental effect on the Irish Sea. Originally from Rush, Price whose family owns 11 trawlers, five prawn trawlers and six razor fish boats, was most definite when he said: “They are absolutely wrong. I’d like to know what type of evidence they are using, because there’s no money being allocated to scientific studies. This is all about people jumping to conclusions with extremely rough figures.” Scientists claim however, that stocks of fish including cod, whiting and sole have fallen because these fish have been caught in prawn
nets. They are advising there should be no dedicated fisheries for those fish next year. Price responded by saying, “The quota for prawn fishing has been restricted in the Irish Sea dramatically over the past 10 years. We’ve had to install technical measures, like Swedish grids, a big aluminium gate that is placed in the nets, which allows the cod to escape. These were unworkable and dangerous. In fact one fisherman was hit by one of them on one of our boats, where he broke his leg. Because we had to use this gear, each of our boats lost between six and eight weeks trying to get it right,” he said. “There is supposed to be a shortage of cod in the Irish Sea, but I can assure you that there is an abundance of cod out there. The studies are there to back this up. Every boat in Ireland that is fishing for prawns uses four nets, which are solely targeting prawns and have a far lower fishing circle.” As prawns are bottom feeders, the nets used to catch them are used only for prawns and are not targeting white fish like cod and whiting. Occasionally, cod that are feeding on prawns can be caught in the prawn nets, but the net is designed to allow their escape. He continued, “The older nets had a float height off the ground of shoulder level, but the new nets have a float height of waist level. This reduces the catching of cod by at least 75 per cent.” Continued on page 14

Local councillor, Joe Newman (NP) is delighted that work has commenced on repairing faulty footpaths at Forest Court in Swords, on foot of a request he made to the County Council earlier this year. He explained to the County Leader: “I had been contacted by a local resident, whose wife is confined to a wheelchair. The journey for her to get from her home in Forest Court to the local shops in River Valley became very difficult, due to the poor condition of the paths in the estate. I contacted the engineer in the Council and he came out to have a look at the condition of the paths. He agreed that there was an issue and I’m delighted to say that his response was very positive and very fast,” said Newman. The speedy response from the Council gives me great hope for any future dealings I may have with them and, while they take a lot of flack, they deserve great credit for their quick action here, making life a lot easier for wheelchair users in the locality,” he said.

Speaking at the launch, Minister Donohoe pledged the Government’s support for the further development of the aviation sector, saying: ‘Aviation matters. It matters to the Irish economy, it matters to consumers, and it matters to this Government. I’m glad to say that in line with our very healthy economic recovery, the aviation sector in Ireland continues to grow strongly. This trend looks set to continue with a record 15 per cent increase in passenger volume at Dublin Airport reported for the first half of 2015. “By 2020, we expect Irish airports will handle in the region of 33 million passengers and Irish aviation has to be ready to deal with the challenges ahead in this changing global environment. Council Under Fire Over Swords Bridge The County Council have come in for fierce criticism from furious residents living adjacent to Blackbridges. just down the road from Fingallians GAA pitch in Swords. The reason for their anger is the fact that the local authority has removed the old, iconic bridge, widely known as Blackbridges and replaced it with, what they describe as a metal crash barrier. Local residents, James O’Neill and Peter O’Toole contacted the County Leader to express their fury at such a move by the council. O’Neill said, “This road leads to a walk down by the Broadmeadow estuary and the bridge was much loved by many of the older generation in Swords. The council decided last year to remove the bridge and they replaced it with crash barriers with a mesh fence for a bridge, and we find this totally unacceptable that this monstrosity was allowed to replace our iconic bridge. This is the place where a countless number of kids came to fish and shoot the breeze, as I did as a youngster myself. There’d be no hope of that happening now, “ he said.
By Patrick Finnegan “Blackbridges was a very special place and people even had their wedding photos taken here, and my aunt and uncle had their ashes scattered from the bridge in a ceremony,” said Peter O’Toole. Imagine that happening now not a chance,” he said. O’Neill claims that children can no longer look over the bridge at the river below and the fact that there is no footpath at one side of the bridge just adds to the problem. “This is a botched job and we are utterly disgusted by it and we are demanding that the council return a bridge that is appropriate to such a peaceful rural setting. It’s a disaster” he said. “What they have done is to replace a beautiful bridge with a crash barrier, more suitable for a motorway. This has nothing to do with safety, as there has never been an accident here since I moved here in 1961. There must be some other alternative structure that would satisfy everyone, instead of this monstrosity,” he said. Another bone of contention for the residents is

the fact that there were stone cappings , dating back to 1895 when the bridge was first built, that have been removed and replaced with ones made of sand and cement. “We believe they had originally been taken to Newbridge House, but because they are so valuable, they are now located in Malahide Castle. This is an act of pure vandalism by the council and we want the original cappings reinstated instead of these
cheap ones. It appears to me that the council has no problem spending money on Malahide Castle and the cricket ground there, but when it comes to Swords, it’s a different thing. This bridge would never be accepted in a place like Malahide, well I have news for the Council - it’s not acceptable here either,” concluded a furious O’Neill.
10th Anniversary Malahide Sea Scouts Complete Crossing Of Oldtown Walk
Pictured here is Leo Halpin and supporters at last year's Great Cappagh Walk.
The Leo Halpin Great Cappagh Walk, now in its 10th year, will take place on Sunday, 13th September in Oldtown from 3.00pm. Entertainment for all the family includes BBQ kindly sponsored by SuperValu Balbriggan, large farmers market courtesy of local farmers, vintage car display and much more. Cappagh Hospital patient, Leo Halpin has been a voluntary fundraiser and supporter of the hospital’s Charity Foundation for many years. He champions the work of Cappagh Hospital Foundation by organising the annual ‘Great Cappagh Walk’ in Oldtown. Last year’s Oldtown Great Cappagh Walk raised an astonishing €10,130, bringing to over €80,000 the total funds raised from this event since it first began. “Leo is at the core of our volunteer fundraisers,”said John Dennehy, Executive Director of Cappagh Hospital Foundation. “He is the backbone of our fundraising work in the North
County and his efforts generate substantial funding for Cappagh Hospital every year. The Leo Halpin Great Cappagh Walk continues to make a real and very valuable contribution to the care and treatment of patients at Cappagh Hospital and we are indebted to Leo for his continued support. We also greatly appreciate the many individuals and businesses in Oldtown and the greater North County area for their support of this event every year,” he said. Leo’s contribution will go directly to fund the development of a rehabilitation gym at Cappagh’s Active Rehabilitation Unit. The ethos of the Active Rehabilitation Unit is to help patients return to an active, confident and sociable life following a trauma, or an acute medical episode. The new customised rehabilitation gym will provide a large, dedicated space for patients to complete their physiotherapy programmes, which will help them return to a more independent life.

One of the most enduring businesses in Swords is celebrating 28 years of successful trading in the town this year. Peaches Beauty Salon, which is located on the top floor in the Plaza Shopping Centre, is one of the most successful businesses in the town and is a prime example of how a business can thrive over such a long time. Proprietor, Joan Donohoe told the County Leader about how Peaches Beauty Salon has survived over such a long time. “When I came to Swords first, I started on Main Street over number 62 and eventually made my way to the Plaza, where I was one of the first tenants here,” she said. Joan is very grateful to her loyal customer base, who have continued to support her through thick and thin. “The business is more like a hobby for me now, as I know all of my customers personally, and I get the same clients every week, or two weeks regularly,” she said. Word of mouth testimonials are very important to Joan, where the daughters of old clients are now coming to the salon. “I love working in Swords, which has been very good for my business and when recessions occurred, the lipstick factor kicked in. This is where women hit the beauty salon during hard time, where, at least, they want to look well. This is when the sale of red lipstick goes through the roof,” she says. One of the secrets of Joan’s success has been her willingness to move with the times. “I also teach beauty and with the increasing ethnic diversity in the area, many of my customers are from different ethnic groups, with the result that our range of products also changes. I have to cater for different skin colour and types,” said Joan. President of Fingal Dublin Chamber, Siobhan Kinsella said: The Chamber is delighted to congratulate Joan of Peaches Beauty Salon in The Plaza on an amazing 28 years of trading success in the North County. Joan’s customer focus, consistent nurturing of client relationships is a testament to the success she continues to achieve. With an ever evolving and increasing customer base, Joan proves that a commitment to a customer focused quality offering pays dividends in business. Joan’s passion for her loyal and multicultural customer base is evident through the passion with which she speaks about her own continuing professional development and the development of the salon’s capability to serve her customer’s needs. The Chamber are delighted to wish continued success to a solid customer focused business,” she said.

Swords Continues To Shine In IBAL League The much anticipated IBAL Anti-Litter League were published yesterday (Monday) and it has been reported that the news for the North County is mixed. The good news is that Swords has retained its lofty position in the ‘Cleaner Than European Norms’ sector, where it finished in 16th place nationwide. The cleanest town in Ireland is Killarney Co Kerry. However, the only ‘fly in the ointment’ for the North County is the result for Dublin Airport
environs, which continues to be disappointing, where it was classed as ‘Moderately Littered,” Great credit is due to the County Council and to the local Tidy Towns group, who have worked closely together to ensure that Swords remains one of the cleanest towns in the country. Many locals and visitors have remarked about the colourful floral displays on both sides of Main Street, which have transformed the town. With Swords destined to become an important tourist hub, It is particularly heartening to see that businesses and residents alike have learned valuable lessons from previous IBAL results and have managed to take suggestions on board, thus ensuring that Swords retains its position in the top sector.

The car had been stolen from outside a house in Newhaven Avenue in the town, and gardai were alerted when the brother of the car owner noticed it being driven away. The real drama unfolded when gardai in an unmarked car caught up with the stolen car in nearby Clonuske Rise. An eyewitness reported that, after hearing a loud bang outside her home, she noticed a man, who turned out to be the injured garda, writhing in agony on the ground. The stolen car had reversed back into him, causing severe injured to his hip. The eyewitness said that locals were very concerned for the garda’s welfare and when they went to comfort him, his loaded gun came out of his holster. The ambulance crew, who arrived quickly on the scene had to cut the clothes off him, as they treated him. Local TD, Alan Farrell (FG) has stated that the importance of Dublin Airport to the national economy cannot be underestimated. This is as a result of 97,000 jobs, either directly or indirectly related to the activities of Dublin Airport. “The economic impact study carried out on Dublin Airport has shown the importance of the Airport to the national economy, particularly in terms of employment and connectivity. In fact, overall 15,700 jobs can be directly attributed to Dublin Airport, meaning that these jobs have either been created by the airport itself or by airport related businesses,” Farrell said. A further 9,600 jobs are indirectly related to Dublin Airport, which means they are focused in both supplying airport businesses and providing them with support. An additional 72,000 jobs can be attributed to the airport as they are classified as being induced by employee spending in the economy or as catalytic which includes tourism and trade related businesses. “Dublin Airport is incredibly influential in terms of investment and job creation. It is a vital asset to the North County and I am delighted that the airport and the tourism industry are performing strongly. The economic impact study on the airport estimates that, out of the total number of jobs attributable to the presence of the airport, 25,150 of these are in the Fingal region,” he added.

Local School Children Have “High Amounts” Of Bacteria On Hands Hygiene experts, Initial revealed that 41 per cent of primary school students around the North County and beyond have high levels of bacteria on their hands, in the results of their nationwide Hygiene Angels primary school tour. Initial are urging parents and schools to show children how to wash their
hands properly to prevent the spread of illness as the new school term starts. The Hygiene Angels visited eight schools across the country and swabbed 97 children’s hands. Of these, 40 were found to have high levels of bacteria, which could indicate the possibility for a high risk of cross-contamination with potentially harmful
bacteria. The children were surveyed in May and were aged between Junior Infants and 4th class. Half of the students swabbed had a normal level of bacteria on their hands, with low levels of bacteria noted on the hands of just one per cent of students. They then showed the students how to wash their hands properly, and retested the chil-
dren’s hands. After washing their hands for at least 20 seconds, each child had a low level of bacteria on their hands. Throughout the school tour the team demonstrated the high levels of bacteria on hands, desks, and personal items by swabbing the surfaces. Using UV glow gel and a UV torch, the germ-busting team showed kids how germs
can lurk on fingers and nails even when they look clean. Dr. Colm Moore, Area Technical Manager at Initial said: “Hygiene is the key to controlling the spread of infection. The risk of spreading infection increases when people tend to congregate in any given area via airbourne routes and by contact. The high levels of bacteria recorded on
some children’s hands is worrying, as they are at a higher risk of both contracting an illness and passing bacteria onto other children. Handwashing in general can reduce bacteria by 80 per cent, however, based on the results of this survey, up to 93 per cent of bacteria were removed through good handwashing methods. It is not enough to wash hands when they are visibly dirty,” he said.

Swords Locals Set World Record A group of locals have set a new world record and raised almost €50,000 to aid early intervention programmes for children with Down Syndrome by climbing the equivalent of Mount Everest twice – among other amazing feats of strength in 12 hours. The Lifting For Lucys World Record event saw 36 committed participants from local gym Crossfit Swords take part in a relay event that stretched them to the lengths of their endurance at the Pavilions Shopping Centre last week. After 12 hours of sheer endurance, they travelled 15,600m on climbing ropes, lifted over 500,000kgs in weight (the equivalent of two Boeing 787s) and completed over 18,722 burpees. This amazing team exceeded their three targets with eight minutes to spare, raising valuable funds and much-needed profile for St Michael’s House and the Down Syndrome Centre, specifically the home teaching and early intervention programmes. This was the latest in a series of fundraising events under the Lifting For Lucys campaign carried out by the team from the Swords gym. “This has been an incredible achievement by the gym members and one that we honestly thought may have been beyond us,” said Jamie Lawlor, owner of CrossFit Swords. “The reasons for doing this are pretty clear. Lucy was fortunate enough to avail of early intervention services via a home teacher from St Michael’s House, and these are crucial for a child with Down Syndrome to be able to thrive,” said fellow organiser and Donabate local, Donal Lawless. “These services can make the difference between learning to walk, jumping or even being able to hold a crayon, something we all take for granted. “Lucy is out the other side now and starts main-

The Pride of Place judges were in Ballyboughal for the afternoon where the Ballyboughal Community Council and the Village Pride of Place steering Committee made a presentation on the history of the area and all of the voluntary and community work being carried out in the village and environs. The judges then made some historical site visits, and afterwards gathered socially with members of the voluntary community in St Patrick’s Hall representing
The North County will be amongst the areas to receive twelve new Garda vehicles in total during the course of 2015 to boost the fight against crime, according to local TD Alan Farrell (FG). Nine of these vehicles are already in action,” said Farrell. “New Garda vehicles will greatly support the fight against crime in local communities throughout the Dublin Metropolitan Region North, which includes the North County. Providing resources for Gardaí and ensuring that legislation is in place to deter repeat offenders is essential to

The Pride of Place photographic and video exhibition in St Patrick’s Hall with the theme “The Spirit of Ballyboughal” was opened officially later that evening at a reception for all the village at 8pm by County Mayor (and Ballyboughal man), Cllr David O’Connor. The entire village, and all volunteers from any Ballyboughal voluntary group, past and present attended this reception. Afterwards a major evening of music took place in the Village Inn to celebrate the wonderful history of music that lives on to this day and is such an intrinsic part of the culture and Spirit of Ballyboughal.

The first intake of 100 new recruits entered Templemore in September 2014 and passed out in April of this year. A further 200 recruits entered in December 2014 and February 2015, with 250 more expected to begin training later this year. When Fianna Fáil closed Templemore it was a major blow to An Garda Síochána and to communities in the North County and throughout the country,” Farrell added. “Our local Gardaí will be bolstered by this influx of new vehicles and Gardaí, which is part of the Government’s comprehensive plan to fight crime.”

The 2015 Gum Litter Taskforce (GLT) education campaign was recently launched by County Mayor, Cllr. David O’Connor. The launch follows an agreement between the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government and Food and Drink Industry Ireland (FDII) representing the gum industry, to fund a national gum litter awareness programme from 2015 – 2017. The agreement includes newly agreed mechanisms to further enhance and reinvigorate the campaign and represents a multi-million euro commitment by industry to tackling the issue of littered gum. The initiative aims to build on the success of past public education programmes to date and introduce new elements to help raise awareness of the impact of littered gum and encourage proper gum disposal. Speaking at the launch, the Mayor said, “It is wonderful to see everyone in the community coming together to get behind this campaign, both here in the North County and in so many towns around the country. The GLT campaign brings together the community and local authorities with a common goal to fight gum litter.” Paul Kelly, Chairman of the GLT added, “We look forward to launching the new three year programme and a number of new initiatives including; ‘Bin It! Buddies and our new strapline ‘Bin your gum when you’re done’. The hugely popular Bin It! workshop will tour the country in the autumn.”
North County To Benefit From Travel Survey? Tourism Ireland welcomes news that Dublin is voted third friendliest cities in the world – by readers of Travel + Leisure magazine. Three Irish cities, Galway, Dublin and Cork have made it into the top four friendliest cities in the world in the annual reader survey of Travel Leisure, a major US travel magazine based in New York. Galway is in first position, with Dublin and Cork coming in third and fourth place respectively. The hope is that the North County will be a beneficiary of Dublin’s great result, with visitors flocking to our area. Every year, Travel + Leisure asks its readers to weigh in on their favourite cities around the globe, in its annual World’s Best Awards – its annual reader survey which rates destinations and travel providers. The magazine has unveiled the results of its 2015 survey, including its list of the world’s friendliest cities. Welcoming the news, Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said: “I am delighted to see three of our cities appear in the prestigious Travel + Leisure survey of friendly cities around the globe. It is another well-deserved accolade for Galway, Dublin and Cork. Again and again, our research shows us that the friendliness of our people is one of our unique selling points. It is the warm welcome and the ‘craic’ here that resonates with our overseas visitors and makes our cities, and the island of Ireland, such a great choice for a short break or holiday. This accolade by the readers of Travel + Leisure magazine gives Tourism Ireland another great platform to continue to promote our cities and Ireland around the world as a ‘must-see’ destination.”
Great Achievement By Local Cyclists

A Charity Cycle took place on Saturday, 22nd August on behalf of ARC Cancer Support. A total of six novice cyclists headed off from the Maldron Hotel Dublin Airport en-route to Ballycanew, Co Wexford. The driving force behind the charity cycle was Ger Casey, an employee of DAA, who was accompanied by two work colleagues, as well as his brother, nephew and a friend. Ger told the County Leader about why he chose ARC Cancer Support. “The reason for choosing ARC is that my mother, wife and mother-in-law all had cancer and ARC Cancer Support looked after them for three years. Thankfully all involved are well down the road to recovery, which, in no small way, is a direct result of the support service offered by ARC. We decided to give something back, and we were delighted to have raided up to €1500
for this great charity,” he said. Ger continued, “So why the cycle? That’s an easy one. Unfortunately, due to minimal subvention received from the Irish government, ARC are very much dependent on public donations. Given that all four guys come from sporting backgrounds, it made sense to organise a bike ride from a well known landmark (Dublin Airport) to the family home in Co. Wexford, while raising funds along the way. “It was a great achievement for us as a group. We endured five and-a-quarter hours of hardship in the saddle in atrocious weather, each rider encouraging the next to keep going, knowing what they were doing was for a great cause. We had great support team on the road, who kept us in great spirits throughout,” concluded a delighted Ger.

Scientific Claims Rubbished
Continued from page 1 Price went on to say that there are now more prawns out there in the Irish Sea than ever before. “Inshore boats are doing better now because the bigger boats are not going inshore because of the lack of quota. This means that the Balbriggan men and other smaller boatmen are doing better than ever. I would go so far as to say that the amount of prawns out there is quite phenomenal – it’s unreal. Every year it’s getting stronger and stronger,” he said. “This has become even more evidenced because of the reduction in fishing days in the Galway area, meaning that smaller west coast boats are now ready to fish here this winter.” “This year, because of the lack of quota, we had to send boats 300 miles off the west coast due to us having some quota out there, so we’re going further afield to remain sustainable because of the way the quota is being allocated.” However, a leading British marine conservation officer, Dr Emily Baxter said: “We are extremely concerned that mud sites in the Irish Sea are not being considered for protection. These vulnerable habitats are already damaged from activities such as bottom trawling and they are at high risk of further damage and deterioration. The stocks are being fished beyond sustainable levels and other stocks are in a severe state of depletion. Decision makers need to take action,” she said Dick James from the Northern Ireland Fish Producers’ Organisation backed up David Price’s claims when he said, “Prawns are being fished sustainably in the Irish Sea and prawn fishermen have taken steps to minimise the amount of cod and other fish caught in their nets. “We don’t accept that the Irish Sea is being overPictured at the fundraising event for Richie Callaghan to raise funds for a life saving liver fished. QUALITY, VALUE AND STYLE
Even though autumn is here, and winter is unfortunately, not far away, you can still brighten up your home and garden in preparation for the new season ahead. Whether you just want to freshen things up or undertake a serious house overhaul before those dark evenings really kick in, now is the time to get to it.
Take It In Your Stride Take your time with the improvements to your home as the autumn has just started and there’s plenty of time to get things done. Keep refer-
ring to your list and mark off things you have completed and keep checking to see what needs your attention next. Coal fires are making a comeback (these are especially good for the cold winter months ahead) and there is nothing more relaxing than sitting in front of an open fire and relaxing.
Room By Room Whichever room you feel needs your attention first is the place you want to start. Let’s say it’s the bedroom, in that case there are small improvements that will make
your room look like a new boudoir. New curtains and blinds are a start, to make the window a beautiful feature in your bedroom and you can still have that minimal look. You may need to opt for heavier curtains as we go into winter, but the room needn’t look drab and heavy even so. If you have a small bedroom, minimalism is very important and there are lots of tricks and ways to ensure all of your essentials are well out of the way. Under bed storage boxes and bags are a great way to store some of your things. You
should also take advantage of your attic, if you have one. Once all of your belongings are sorted and tidied, try scattering a few cushions
on your bed and clearing bedside lockers. Try a nice lamp on your bedside locker that will match your curtains or bed clothes.

Data Protection Should Not Be A Killer Last week, I wrote of the dangers for political leaders staying too long. When doing so, I was conscious that following Paul Keogh’s remarks some weeks ago, FG insiders firmly asserted that Enda Kenny would only stay until 2.1 million people had employment which was expected to be achieved by mid-2018. Last week, I saw a press statement commenting on the rate of job creation and noting that if the same rate continues, there will be 2 million people employed by the end of this year. If that trend continues, it looks like Enda will be able to retire early, as the 2.1 million target should be reached by about Paddy’s Day next year, which will be a truly remarkable achievement. MEP Brian Hayes FG issued a statement calling for new EU laws to be introduced, obliging airlines to share Passenger Name Record (PRN) data with EU police in order to help fight terrorism.
By Cathal Boland Brian said: “Since 2011, the EU has been debating this issue. Concerns about data protection and privacy have been to the forefront of the debate. Currently information on passengers is only provided to police for international flights/.” Hayes went on, “It makes no sense that data analysis should be limited to international flights only. Flights between EU Member States are as relevant.” Following the terrorist incident on the high-speed train, heading from Amsterdam to Paris last week, I enquired if he was in favour of the recording and transfer of PNR information of passengers of cross border trains to the relevant security services. Hayes said, “I am in favour of the same conditions applying for inter country train jour-
Another Successful Raft Race For Skerries RNLI The annual raft race took place recently in Skerries and once again proved a very popular and successful event. Despite the slightly miserable weather, nine rafts turned up ready to go to sea in support of their local lifeboat station. Cheered on by the crowd watching from the shore they put on a great show with every crew putting in a fantastic effort. Noah’s Ark crossed the line first. Sneaky Prawns finished in second place
neys. The recent incidents on high speed inter country train routes does highlight the need to extend the current proposal, if practicable, to other modes of transport.” The introduction of monitoring of movement across borders by train raises the question should cars not also be included? Such a development would, of course, interfere with free movement between jurisdictions. The discussion on sharing of flight information commenced back in 2011 and there are ongoing concerns about data protection and privacy issues. Europe faces a real security challenge, one which is likely to escalate. The EU must focus on sorting the personal data protection issues out and putting in place a common sense approach to enhancing all our security.
and Rush Harbour Festival took third spot. At the presentation of the prizes, Skerries RNLI thanked the volunteer fundraisers for all their hard work, Skerries Sailing Club, for providing the safety craft, Fingal County Council, the competitors and everyone who helped make the raft race another successful event. Speaking after the prize giving, Gerry Canning, Skerries RNLI Volunteer Lifeboat Press Officer said: “There were some really excellent rafts this year. Each year we are seeing more thought and creativity being put into the rafts while still keeping the fun element.”

Locals Urged To Be Mindful Of Bullying The Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (ISPCC) is highlighting the issue of bullying, as thousands of children and young people across the North County return to school and is advising that standing up to bullying is everyone’s business. The return to school after the summer holidays can be an exciting time for some young students, for others it can be a time they dread and fear. As we approach the return to school the ISPCC reminds parents around the locality that the
prevention of bullying is everyone’s responsibility. Parents and carers as well as professionals and volunteers who engage with young people, can all play a part in reducing the prevalence of bullying. The ISPCC encourages all schools and clubs who wish to strengthen their preventative approach to bullying to find out more about the ISPCC’s Anti Bullying Shield Campaign. The first stage of the Shield Campaign for schools or clubs is to utilise the self-evaluation ‘Shield My School’ or ‘Shield My
Club’ toolkit. Schools and clubs who use the toolkit will have clearer idea of what their strengths are in terms of management of bullying and where they need to develop. The toolkits are also based on a community approach which involves various stakeholders including children, parents/cares as well as any staff /volunteers in the prevention of bullying which is proven to be more effective than anyone working in isolation. Further to the Shield My School and Shield My Club toolkits, the ISPCC’s ‘ Shield Flag’ Award is a scheme that was developed to publicly recognise the efforts of schools/clubs who are taking a positive proactive approach to bullying.

Dog Owners Called To “Cop Themselves On” Advertising Feature
Pictured are concerned residents of Pinegrove Park, Swords, Tony Ryan, Eileen Byrne, Frank Walsh and Tom Dempsey beside the sign, appealing to dog owners to make sure to clean up after their dogs
The amount of dog fouling in Pinegrove estate in Swords is causing local residents a considerable problem, and they are appealing to dog owners to clean up after their pets. Local resident, Frank Walsh, who spoke to the County Leader about this ongoing problem, highlighted the situation regarding the proliferation of dog dirt in the estate. He said, “This was brought home to me one day while I was walking home and I inadvertently stepped in a pile of dog dirt. This prompted me to investigate and I discovered that this was a real problem in the estate. I counted and marked 21 instances of dog fouling in a very small area of grass verge in the estate. The Council don’t seem to be particularly bothered about problems like this,” he claimed. Despite this, Frank Walsh and other residents, including Tony Ryan, Eileen Byrne and Tom Dempsey said that they intend to call on the Council to take measures to address this problem. These include the provi-
sion of dog litter bins in the area and for the estate to be included in their maintenance programme. The group maintains that there are many responsible dog owners in the area, but that a small minority just let their dogs roam to ‘do their business’ as they please. The residents also claim that there are health implications associated with dog fouling. Walsh explained, “It is believed that the presence of toxicara in dog faeces can cause blindness in children, if they come in close contact with it, so this is a real problem. We hope that dog owners will cop on to themselves and do the right thing,” he said. Eileen Byrne said the situation is disgusting. “A dog can’t clean up after itself and people shouldn’t expect others to clean up after their dogs. I feel that the problem is not about people in the estate, but people walking through the estate from other areas. We need a dog warden to patrol the area, “ she said.
Public Urged To Tackle Illegal Dumping Local councillor, Duncan Smith (Lab), wants to tackle the chronic dumping which according to him, currently exist in St Margarets. He told the County Leader: “There has been a chronic dumping problem on the roads around St Margarets over the past few weeks. I know we can have problems regarding fly tipping in certain areas, but this is something chronic,” he explained. “We’re not talking about household waste, we’re talking about heavy-weight items and it’s becoming a real problem.” Smith added that not only was the waste unsightly, but that it was a danger to local resi-

1916 Memorabilia Day In Malahide Do you have a box hidden in the attic, or under the bed that holds the story of a family member that was involved in the 1916 Rising and beyond to 1923? If you do, or if you know someone who does, why not share those memories
with others. The County Council are holding memorabilia days in the Grand Hotel, Malahide on Saturday, 26th September. Experts will be on hand to digitally photograph your material and collect your details and stories. Email: 1916centenary@fingal.ie should you have anything to submit or should you need any further information.
You may well wince at seeing festive products appearing on supermarket shelves the moment you return from your summer holiday or hearing Christmas jingles playing merrily on the radio just as the leaves start to fall from the trees. This feature serves to alleviate some of that season associated stress and offer some practical tips to help make the run up to this Christmas smooth sailing for residents around the North County. There are many reasons to suggest that now is the perfect time to get planning for that festive party, which isn’t too far away. Whether it be an end of year work party or a friendly festive gettogether, there are many reasons that September is the month to get the ball rolling putting details in place.
Decide On A Date The first point to put in place is the date. The earlier this is set in stone the better, as at the busiest time of the year people tend to have fairly full diaries. So make that date official without delay and you’ll guarantee yourself many more options.
Book The Venue The venue is arguably the topmost priority for a successful bash and therefore you can expect them to get booked up pretty fast! Also, if you book at this earlier stage you are much more likely to discover that lots of early bird offers are available. There are many wonderful venues in North County Dublin that would provide the
ideal reception and facilities for an inexhaustible range of party criteria.
Set The Budget Find out what kind of budget you have, and this will determine many of your options, such as what kind of venue you can choose, to how much you can set aside for food, and so on. Ask about the budget and stick to it. So many places around the North County offer true value for money, so be sure to look at all the options before making your choice.
Move To The Music A Christmas party is most definitely an opportunity to let your hair down and
show your colleagues and friends what you’re made of on the dance floor. It is imperative for an event like this to have well known, univer-
sally-loved floor fillers on the playlist. Whether the venue provides the music, or you provide it yourself, don’t leave the tunes to chance.
Pick A Theme Another quirky idea to make your Christmas Party stand out is to pick a theme and centre everything around that. It’s bound to be good fun and will truly make for a Christmas party with a difference. Also, there are endless amounts of ‘themed’ ideas you could go for, and it doesn’t have to be a festive one. Why not go for a ‘Summer Fun at Christmas’ theme? The possibilities are endless!
