Reilly Calls For ‘Day Hospital’ For Swords Local Fine Gael senator and former Minister for Health, Dr James Reilly is calling on his party colleague, Minister Simon Harris to set about providing a Day Hospital in Swords. This, he maintains will take the pressure off major hospitals, where smaller medical procedures can be carried out in Swords. Dr Reilly’s judgement was called into question when, as Minister for Health, he was lambasted for adding Balbriggan to the list for Primary Care Centres. This furore almost toppled the Government and caused the loss of a junior minister in Roisin Shortall. However, with perfect vision provided by hindsight, the result of his far sighted judgement has seen the delivery of a world class Senator Dr. James Reilly Primary Care Centre, about to open soon in Balbriggan, which will have a profound effect on health service provision in the locality. Dr Reilly made his appeal for a day hospital for Swords, while addressing the Seanad last week on the problems facing the health service. He said, “Whilst we have terrible trouble now with waiting times and people on trolleys, they are influenced very much by what happens in primary care and early diagnosis and early intervention, which are critical,” he said. “Equally, what happens after treatment, in terms of facilities for people to return home. Most people want to go home. In that context, I want to raise the need for a day hospital in Swords to serve the needs for the people of North County Dublin. Both the Mater Hospital and Beaumont Hospital are large regional hospitals with national specialities and regional specialities and services. Very often, surgery has to be day surgery and places are taken up by acute admissions from the night before,” he said. “If we had a separate Day Hospital in Swords, which is accessible to over 100,000 people and beyond, many of these procedures can take place there, like hernias, gall bladder surgery, cataracts, plastic surgery etc. These are very successfully being carried out currently in places like Ennis, Louth County Hospital in Dundalk, Roscommon and Nenagh. I am calling on the Minister to give consideration to the provision of a day hospital for Swords and hopefully he can come in to the Seanad at some time to discuss this proposal at length,” concluded Reilly.

Skerries man, Fergal Butler is a remarkable man by any stretch of the imagination. Not only is he the full-time carer for his wife, Lynda who is an MS sufferer and his son Kyle (15), who has cerebral palsy, he is in the process of renovating a 35 foot cabin cruiser. His main motivation for renovating the boat, is that it can be used by the entire family for holidays on the River Shannon.

Loreto Secondary School Balbriggan had a very exciting outing last week, when they visited the National Symphony Orchestra in the city. The music students of third, fifth and sixth year were brought to the NSO with their teachers Ms McFadden, Ms Flynn and Ms Kearns from the music department. Composer, Paul Rissmann gave illustrated presentations on their set learning and the students

had the opportunity to hear the set of works performed by the NCO. Ms McFadden told the

The girls are studying Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet as it’s a set piece on the Leaving Cert exam and this was a great learning experience for them.” It was Catholic schools week last week and the school marked the week in many ways not only with the visit to the NCO, but on St Brigid’s day they celebrated with morning prayer and some of the students got to visit the Parish Church to celebrate mass in the community.

Dublin Fire Brigade Services Must Be Retained Local Fianna Fáil TD, Darragh O’Brien has expressed his support for the full retention of services provided by Dublin Fire Brigade across the city, and particularly in Swords, Skerries and Balbriggan. He maintains that a HSE proposal to merge services could have negative impact on the North County. O’Brien made his comments following a recent visit to Swords Fire Station with party colleagues Cllr Brian Dennehy and Cllr Eoghan O’Brien. O’Brien said, “Dublin Fire Brigade (DFB) has been providing crucial ambulance

services to the citizens of the city and North County since 1898. They now operate with life-saving equipment and over 800 trained firefighter paramedics work to provide immediate medical assistance to members of the public in need of treatment 24/7, 365 days a year. Staff must be lauded for their ability to respond to thousands of emergency calls across the capital every year,” he said. “I am deeply concerned by plans revealed by the HSE, which propose to remove the delivery of Dublin’s ambulance service from Dublin Fire Brigade

and instead merge the service with the National Ambulance Service. This proposal could have a hugely negative impact on our area and the delivery of services from the DFB call centre must be retained.” O’Brien continued, “I strongly oppose any move to withdraw resources during a period of increased responsibility and decreasing budgets which make operating adequate services a near impossible task.” “On my visit to the station In Swords, I reinforced my party’s support of DFB, DFB Ambulance and its entire staff and crew. We must protect those in Swords Fire Station who provide a full-time fire, rescue, and ambulance service which serves our whole community,” he concluded.

Pictured outside Swords Fire Station are, Cllr Brian Dennehy, Martin Cooke (Station Officer), Garry Hayden (Fire fighter), Ian Lawless (Fire fighter), Darragh O'Brien TD, Rob Tierney (Station Officer), Ken Clarke (Fire fighter), Mark Donnelly (Fire fighter), Cllr Eoghan O'Brien and Dave Kenny (Fire fighter)

New LGBTQ+ Book Club In Balbriggan Balbriggan resident, Liz Bourke is in the process of organising an LGBTQ+ book club in association with Balbriggan Library. The book club meets on the last Thursday of every month between 6.30pm and 7.30pm in Balbriggan Library. Liz explained to the County Leader, “I couldn’t find a local LGBTQ+ book club, so I decided to start one. Apparently this is the first LGBTQ+ book club to operate in Fingal County Library premises. They are setting up the room and they’ve added us to their mailing list. The book club will meet once a month. When I was younger, I could’ve really used more LGBTQ+ visibility locally, and I want to help build the sense of community I wish I’d had,” she said. “The book club is primarily aimed at LGBTQ+ people, but it’s open to everyone who likes to read. Anyone who’s interested in the books we’re reading is welcome to come along, as long as they understand that homophobia and transphobia aren’t welcome. So far, I have had some interest in the project, and Assumpta at Balbriggan library has been very helpful,” said Liz. The next meeting of the Balbriggan LGBTQ+ book club will take place on Thursday 23rd February at 6.30pm. The book for discussion is Madeline Miller’s awardwinning ‘The Song of Achilles’ (Bloomsbury, 2012).

Residents of Knocksedan Appeal To Dublin Bus The Residents Association of Knocksedan Swords are calling on the National Transport Authority (NTA) to extend some of the Dublin Bus routes by one stop by moving the terminus from Swords Manor to the entrance to the estate of Knocksedan Demesne. The housing estate of Knocksedan Demesne is over fifteen years old now and has a large number of teenagers attending school and College. There are also a lot of other residents travelling into

Swords and surrounding areas through to the city centre with no cars or travel availability.

By Taylor Mooney The current terminus of Dublin Bus numbers 41, 41C and 41X that service Swords Manor is a four minute drive away from Knocksedan. However when walking this dangerous journey on a narrow twisty back road,it can take up to thirty minutes or more. A lot of teenagers use the forest at the back of the estate as a

shortcut to get to Swords Manor. This journey usually takes at least twenty-five minutes and can be quite terrifying when walking alone. Recently the 41X Dublin Bus Route began a service from Knocksedan after a lot of pleading from the residents. This is a great start for some students, but still leaves a lot of others stranded unless the chance of driving or car-pooling is taken. The service proceeds twice in the morning from Knocksedan at 7.20am

and 7.45am. This stop is also the last for the journeys that depart from UCD at 5.00pm and 5.15pm. Local resident of Knocksedan, Christen Mooney told the County Leader, “I frequently need to use the services that Dublin Bus provides to Swords Manor, it is very frustrating to see that no further extensions on the routes departing from Swords Manor have been made to avail of those who cannot use the 41X and that instead, have to make dangerous journeys when they need to use the bus.” The County Leader tried to contact Dublin Bus,but at the moment are awaiting a comment.

Progress For Rush Credit Union Members Residents of Rush and Lusk will be happy to learn that, Progressive Credit Union, has acquired the loan book and buildings of the former Rush Credit Union. The acquisition was confirmed when the High Court approved the acquisition by Progressive of the loan book and two buildings, one on Sandy Road in Rush and the second in Lusk.

By Leslie Murphy The two properties were put on the market after the collapse of the credit union in Rush and the appointment of liquidators by the High Court following an application by the Central Bank. Progressive had also acquired the loan book of the former Rush Credit Union from the liquidators with whom they were in exclusive talks since last November. Progressive CEO Sean Staunton told the County Leader, “Progressive opened the Rush credit Union premises on Monday morning

last the 13th February. All former Rush members can still use any of Progressive Credit Union’s six branches in Balbriggan, Skerries, Swords, Donabate, Baldoyle or Glasnevin. We are also looking at re-opening the Lusk branch of the former Rush Credit Union in due course.” At its AGM last November, the members of Progressive Credit Union voted overwhelmingly in favour of a rule change to extend the credit union’s “Common Bond” to the parishes of Rush and Lusk to cater for the large numbers of requests from members of the former Rush credit Union. A formal request for the extension was subsequently approved by the Central Bank. In recent months Progressive established a “pop-up” office at the community centre in Rush to facilitate membership applications. It had also extended the opening hours at its neighbouring Skerries branch. Over one thousand former Rush Credit Union members had already joined Progressive.

Good News About Extension To Lusk School The delay to the building of the much-needed extension to Lusk Community College, may be coming to an end. The delay is causing much anger locally, but local councillor, Tom O’Leary (FG) has confirmed that the long awaited extension is expected to be completed within 18 months. O’Leary told the County Leader, “I support the completion of the extension to Lusk Community College to cater for 650 pupils and other resources that are required for special needs. I have contacted the Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton and I have been assured that commencement of building for the new Community College extension will commence this summer and will be completed within 18 months.” “A total of 10 builders have expressed an interest in taking on the project and one of them will be chosen for the job, either this month or early next month,” he said. “I understand that there was an unfortunate delay

in the process. drawn up new Apparently the paperwork, which local Education is now passed as Board’s,( formerly ‘Compliable,’ the VEC) design meaning that the team appear to project will now have made a Cllr. O’Leary proceed without mistake with some paper- delay. The delay had work and they have now nothing to do with the

07

Minister. There was a potential legal challenge and they had to redo the paperwork,” claimed O’Leary. “It is now full steam ahead and, as a local councillor, I want to support the people who are pushing for the school and I can confirm that local senator, Dr James Reilly is fully supportive of the project and he has also been in contact with the Minister,” concluded O’Leary.

Launch Of Dublin 2017 Rose Selection

True to its name, this season’s menswear from Penneys focuses on style fresh off the city streets with sports functionality. Retro reds and cobalt blues bring new life to the season with colour leading the way.

This year’s annual Rose of Tralee festival is on the move again, with the official Dublin Rose launch taking place at Croke Park stadium last week. Now in his second year of hosting Rose of Tralee Selection Events in Dublin, RTE’s Marty Morrissey says it is “a privilege” for him to get the opportunity to work with the Rose of Tralee Festival again. He was joined at the launch by 2016 Dublin Rose, Lorna Whyte from Malahide, who said: “The Dublin Rose process was unbelievable. I met so many amazing girls and learnt so much about myself as a person. It really took me out of my comfort zone and is an experience I will never forget. ”

The nostalgic theme is tied together with slouch joggers, loose jeans with slogan print jumpers and colour block jackets. With prices starting from €8 there is plenty of reason to freshen up your wardrobe.

Dublin Rose of Tralee Lead Co-Ordinator, Steve Cronly said, “We are delighted once again to welcome back Marty Morrissey as host of the Rose of Tralee in Dublin. He was a pleasure to work with last year, putting all the entrants at ease on stage and running our shows in such a professional manner. All of the Dublin team can’t wait to party with Marty!” Pictured a the launch were RTE presenter, Marty Morrissey and 2016 Dublin Rose, Lorna Whyte from Malahide

DCU Access Programme St Finian’s are very proud that over 85 per cent of their students progress to further and higher Education each year. Students from St. Finian’s attend Trinity College, UCD, NUIM , DIT and DCU and many others 3rd level institutions year on year. As a fully inclusive school with DEIS (Delivering equality of educational opportunity to schools) status, they recognise that some of

their students require supports which address educational disadvantage. For this reason they are linked with DCU’s Access Service since 2006 to provide equity of access to higher education to students from less advantaged socioeconomic backgrounds, students with learning difficulties, students from minority ethnic backgrounds, students from the Travelling Community and Young Carers. Some of the programmes offered by DCU to these

students in St. Finian’s include: U and University for 1st to 3rd year students – Maths initiatives, Junior Discover DCU, Achievement and Attendance Awards, Sporting DCU initiatives, Introduction to Campus life tours and a number of places on the Summer scholar’s programme in conjunction with the Centre for Talented Youth. In addition, uniTY, a skills based programme aimed specifically at Transition Year students. It consists of 4 modules: Multimedia and Social Innovation, Coding and app design,

Employability and leadership and student empowerment. Teachers delivering these modules are trained and supported by DCU. Finally, 5th and 6th years are offered a programme called U First to support those from less privileged backgrounds. All of these excellent programmes ensure that a considerable number of students have progressed to higher education who might not have had the opportunity to do so otherwise. St Finian’s look forward to continuing to work closely with DCU to remove any barriers that students may face to access 3rd level education.

Up to fairly recently, golf was viewed as the preserve of the rich and privileged that smacked of elitism. It was played by middleaged men and women in private clubs around the country. Nowadays, golf has become one of the fastest growing sports worldwide and one of the most sought-after leisure activities around. It is played by people of all ages, both male and female and also by teenage boys and girls, who avail of the feel good factor associated with the game.

During the boom times, golf courses sprung up all over the place and the game reached a peak in popularity among most people. Much of this popularity has come about, due to extensive TV coverage, and the emergence of stars, some of them Irish, on a comparable footing with top film stars and pop stars. Some years ago, membership of golf clubs became very expensive, as demand was very high. That was all about to change dramatically, as the recession caused people to re-evaluate their priorities and golf memberships dipped. But, as they say, some good will always emerge from a recession. Golf has now become more affordable, with clubs vying for new members, resulting in incredible value for new members. With competition for green fees, many clubs now offer very attractive special offers to attract potential new members, where you can avail of golf and a meal at very affordable prices. Luckily, the North County is blessed with having some of the most desirable golfing real estate anywhere in Ireland, resulting in some of the marquee golf courses located here. There is a wonderful mix of top class links courses, which are sand based courses, all dotted along our beautiful coastline, as well as superbly manicured championship standard parkland courses, all well worthwhile sampling. Memberships at these clubs are now at a very competitive level, and they offer many extra benefits, besides golf. Many golf courses in the North County

area have hosted major international competitions, where golfers from all over the world, have heaped praise on the quality of these courses. Gone are the days, when bumpy greens and poor fairways were the order of the day. Nowadays, our courses compare more than favourably with the finest to be found anywhere. There is a wonderful mix of top quality links courses and beautifully manicured parkland courses that have hosted major international competitions. These courses provide a stern test for the best professionals, but are also fair and can be enjoyed by the enthusiastic amateur. Some years ago, not all people were drawn to golf. Teenagers seemed to be immune to the attractions of this great game. It was considered as not ‘sexy’ to be seen carrying golf clubs around.

Football and other traditional sports were seen as the popular pursuits. This was all about to change in a dramatic way. The tremendous success of Irish golfers, most notably Rory McIlroy brought the game to everyone, including teenagers who see golf as a doorway to fame and fortune. It was now the game to play and carrying your golf clubs was now ‘cool’. Padraig Harrington led the way for Irish golf, with three Majors, including back to back British Open titles. He paved the way for the likes of Darren Clarke, Graeme McDowell, and Rory McIlroy, all Major winners. Their success propelled Ireland to the forefront of world golf. The contribution of Paul McGinley to the success of Europe in the Ryder Cup during his captaincy cannot be underestimated. This has also enhanced Ireland’s status on the

golf stage worldwide. Another star who has caught the eye is Shane Lowry, who is also destined for major honours. The continuing contribution of our golfers to successful Ryder Cup teams has been immeasurable, and has been a contributing factor to the growth of the game here. Here we must also recognise the late great Christy O’Connor Jnr and his late famous uncle Christy Senior for their wonderful contribution to Irish golf. But it was Rory McIlroy who has really caught the eye and the former World Number 1 has given golf the impetus it so badly needed. This affable young man was about to send golf into orbit. Now, young boys and girls regard it as sexy to play golf and to be seen to play. Young girls see him as a pin-up and young boys view him as a role model to be copied. In recent years, Ireland has hosted the Ryder Cup and it’s female equivalent, the Solheim Cup, as well as the Curtis Cup last year and this has put Ireland to the forefront as a golfing destination.
