At Christmas time, here at the County Leader, we often get inundated with reports of strange goings on throughout the North County. Recently alerts have come in to us that suspicious trails of dust, apparently magic dust, have been found throughout the streets of the local area.

At night, it has been said that the distant jingle of sleigh bells can be heard, and if you look towards the sky, you might catch glimpses of bright lights whizzing through the stars.

Adults and children alike have seen shadows of oddly dressed little people hurrying about the place. Long lists of names clutched in their little hands. Some have even been seen munching on candy canes whilst bustling past.

He is having them check whether or not the children have been naughty or nice and making sure he has all the presents ready to go, so that all the children get what they asked for on Christmas morning.

He has sent his elves from the North Pole and given them checklists. One naughty list and one

nice list. The elves are checking off all the children and making sure that everyone is on the right list for Christmas Eve. So, it is still very important that all children are behaving themselves in the run up to Christmas.

Going to bed at the right time, brushing teeth and doing chores have never been more important, as Santa, it seems, has his little spies everywhere.

As anyone who has lived in the area for a long time will know, the North County is full of magical creatures. Fairies that live in the various castles, Elves that live in the grounds and gnomes that live in the trees and under toadstools. All of these creatures are also all reporting back to Santa at this time of year.

Christmas Travel Advice From DAA Dublin Airport is asking passengers not to gift wrap Christmas presents if they are carrying them in hand luggage at the security screening area this holiday season.

By Aoife Read The County Leader spoke to Dublin Airport spokesperson, Siobhán O’Donnell who said, “Many passengers take a lot of time to carefully wrap Christmas gifts for family and friends over-

seas. We would ask them not to wrap these gifts, otherwise they may be disappointed if they are requested to open them at the passenger security screening area.”

She went on to say, “At this time of year the airport is extra busy, so make sure you know what terminal you are travelling from. Keep in mind that Aer Lingus, Etihad and all US flights go from T2, and everyone else goes from T1. It’s also important to remember that the aviation

liquids regulations are still in place so make sure you check before you travel that you are not carrying any liquids of higher volumes than 100mls in your hand luggage. Make sure you remove all sharp objects from your hand luggage as Siobhan O'Donnell well. ‘The People’s Debate’ Comes To North County The increasingly popular TV show, ‘The People’s Debate with Vincent Browne’ will be in the Dublin Fingal constituency on Monday 11th January, when Vincent and team will be in The Grand Hotel in Malahide for the Dublin Fingal 5 seater constituency debate. That debate will air two days later on TV3 on Wednesday 13th January.

So far, Vincent Browne has visited over 30 constituencies calling TDs to account, querying them on what they are promising their constituents ahead of the upcoming General Election. The People’s Debate with Vincent Browne

aims to involve as many local people as possible around the country, not just TDs. Local people all around the constituency get to air their concerns and views and hold the local politicians to account on a number of important issues.

With such uncertainty in this constituency regarding the outcome of the election, and the fact there is certain to be a wide diversity of candidates in the new five seater constituency, this show promises to be a lively one.

Excellent Achievement By Balbriggan Girls Two remarkable students from Loreto Secondary School in Balbriggan have jointly won a public speaking competition, which entitles them to represent Dublin in a national public speaking competition.

Manny Choudhry and Mia Doran are both Transition Year students at Loreto and Manny told the County Leader, “On 14th November last, I entered a competition called Soroptimist, which is an organisation that empowers

women and is for girls only. It’s a public speaking competition where entries were accepted through schools. I heard my tutor talking about it and I was very excited because I have always been interested in public speaking.”

There were six topics to choose from and I chose the topic of Health and Environment. It was about personal resilience and was based on a quote by Charles Darwin, “It is not the strongest of

By Rush Youthreach Students Student at Rush Youthreach Education Centre, situated in Convent Lane in Rush have generously undertaken a Shoe Box Appeal for Dublin Homeless, an initiative that had the support and backing of both students and staff.

The students worked together in pairs to gather items such as hats, scarves, gloves, socks and toiletries and filled the shoe boxes with these practical items for unfortunate people without homes this Christmas.

Rush Youthreach co-ordinator, Christine Hughes told the County Leader: “They decorated the boxes themselves and designed and created individual gift tags and cards. The students felt strongly about helping those less fortunate and without a home this Christmas.

By giving these shoe boxes to the homeless, the students of Rush Youthreach Education Centre hope that they will bring some seasonal cheer to those who find themselves homeless and without a place to call home. Over the years, the students have raised funds for the homeless as this is a cause that they feel strongly about. The staff and students would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a peaceful New Year,” said Christine.

By Aoife Read Leo Halpin has been a voluntary fundraiser and supporter of the hospital’s charity Foundation for many years. He champions the work of Cappagh Hospital Foundation by organising the annual ‘Great Cappagh Walk’ in Oldtown. Now in its 10th year, the 2015 Oldtown Great Cappagh Walk raised an astonishing €10,000 bringing to over €90,000 the total funds raised from this event since it first began “Leo is at the core of our volunteer fundraisers.” said John Dennehy, Executive Director of Cappagh Hospital Foundation. “He is the backbone of our fundraising work in County Dublin and his efforts generate substantial funding for Cappagh Hospital every year. The Leo Halpin and Cappagh Ex-patients Great Cappagh Walk continues to make a real and very valuable contribution to the care and treatment of patients at Cappagh Hospital and we are indebted to Leo for his continued support. We also greatly appreciate the many individuals and businesses in Oldtown and the greater County Dublin area for their support of this event every year - they are all true champions.”

She went on to say; “We do not give out any animal during the run up to Christmas, except to a lonely older person in a tranquil environment who might not have visitors. We strongly advise people not to buy or procure pups or kittens for Christmas presents.

Many of those advertised are bred in poor circumstances and cost a lot of money.”

The Fingal SPCA are currently in desperate need of rescue workers; “It’s very hard work,” she said.

“Catching a wild cat can be time consuming, not everyone has the will to do it for cats. We need someone who has enough time to dedicate to catching the cat and help in the taming process and the

Fitting Tribute To Shetemi A memorial football tournament took place on Saturday, 5th December at Donabate all weather pitch to remember local lad, Shetemi Ayetigbo.

Shetemi was a third year student at Donabate Portrane Community College, who tragically lost his life last May, while playing a match for his club, Belvedere FC. It happened just a week before he was due to start his Junior Certificate examinations.

winners. The winning team were James Foran, Sean Walsh, Adam O’Rourke, Dylan Forde, Conor Fitzpatrick, Adam Galvin and Patrick Meighan. They played Belvedere FC. in the Memorial Match, and thanks to an early goal, came out on top, much to the appreciation and acknowledgement of the home crowd.

The Player of the Tournament was awarded to 6th year student, Sean Walsh and was presented by Shetemi’s younger brother, Victor while Shetemi’s mum, Lola presented winning captain, Sean Walsh with the inaugural shield. Some short speeches were made by Michael Garvey, Sean Walsh and James Foran.

Organisers paid a special thanks to Cian Shortle for all of his work in preparation for the tournament and to Sean Nolan for his continued efforts over the course of the day, keeping the tournament going. They also thanked Belvedere FC. for attending the event and it is hoped to make the tournament an annual one to remember Shetemi.

A group of North County school kids have won a ticket to theatrical stardom in Ireland’s only panto boot camp and are now lighting up the stage in Jack and the Beanstalk at the The Helix Theatre. The local youngsters were among 200 young hopefuls who were put through their paces at a special panto school this summer.

Only the top talent gets picked to perform and among them are, Emily Bolton (8), Andrew O’Sullivan (11), Aisling Patterson (11), Eve Duffy (9) and Poppy Harley (12) all from Donabate, Isabella Hanlon (12) from Swords and Jessica Malone (12) who hails from The Ward. The young stars are now entertaining people in Jack and the Beanstalk, which runs until 10th January. “Being in the panto makes me feel like I am magic because we make people laugh and smile, and that is so much fun,” said fifth class pupil Aisling Patterson (11) who lives in Donabate.

Young Poppy Harley was particularly pleased to be chosen for this year’s cast at The Helix. “When I heard I’d been picked for the panto I was so thrilled I did cartwheels across the kitchen floor

and then jumped up and danced,” said first year student Poppy, also from Donabate. West End star, Niall Sheehy of Les Miserable and Miss Saigon fame, who plays Jack in the panto believes the talented North County kids are as good as any to be found on the London stage.

“They are young but really professional and every night they deliver an outstanding performance. They are great to work with too. As Jack, I have an axe for the beanstalk which I pretend to wave around backstage in case anyone steps out of line, which they think is hilarious,” he said.

Fingal Dublin Chamber held their annual Christmas lunch at the Maldron Hotel Dublin Airport on Friday, 11th December last. Approximately 90 chamber members turned up for what was to be Chamber President, Siobhan Kinsella’s last official function in her two year stint as President. The gathering, which included Paul Reid, Chief Executive of Fingal County Council heard Siobhan speak about some of the many highlights during her term as President. She cited the ITLG coming to Fingal, with its wonderful potential for job creation in the area, as the standout event of 2015. The granting of the Purple Flag to Swords is another event that the Chamber were proud to have played a crucial role in. Reference was also made to the highlight of the Chamber calendar of events - the Annual Excellence in Business Awards night at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Northwood which saw a record 22 awards being presented to businesses across Fingal. She also mentioned that in excess of 40 events were hosted by the Chamber, making this year its busiest on record. Chamber CEO, Tony Lambert then made a presentation to Siobhan in recognition for the great work she did as President.

Rush Text Alert Scheme Launched The official launch of Rush Text Alert scheme took place on Tuesday , 8th December at Rush Community Centre.

It was attended by a large gathering of locals, as well as local councillors.

In 2012, Rush lost its Garda Station. and as a result of this, Rush community set up Rush Text Alert service to help combat increasing crime in the area. With the support of Rush Community Council, a group of concerned residents got together to set up the text alert service in conjunction with An Garda Siochana and Muintir na Tíre.

Rush Text Alert service went live on 16th November last, and already 400 residents signed up to be part of this essential service for older people in the locality.

Duncan Smith Raises Concerns Local Councillor, Duncan Smith (Lab) has called for the Fingal County Council Out of Hours Service to be staffed adequately during bad weather. At a recent County Council meeting Cllr Smith commended the work of the Council’s Operations and Water Services departments who had been out in force to tackle spot flooding and blocked drains.

Awards with their craft fair.

The Fingal Enterprise Awards is the largest student enterprise programme of its kind in Ireland with over 2,000 primary and secondary schools participating every year. In the first round, business students from Fingal Community College had to set up their own business that was judged by teachers of the school.

“The aim was to make business fun,” teacher in charge of the school competition Frances Gibson said. “We wanted students to learn how to make business in a practical way and I think we have certainly achieved that aim,” she added.

Students had to go

through all the important stages of setting up their own business from developing an idea, market research and advertisement to designing their own stands. They had to raise their own capital that was partially given to a choice of five different charities. At the craft fair, students presented their products that included selfmade jewellery, drawings, cakes, Christmas ornaments and many other creative ideas.

Commenting on the fair, student Thomas Kumorek said: “For our business, we decided to do Ogham writing in frames in recognition to the Irish language. We feel that people are very interested and enjoy the craft fair.”

Information Meeting On Rural Transport Programme In January last, the Rural Transport Programme nationally was streamlined and the Transport Co-ordination Unit (TCU) was formed to cover Louth Meath and rural Fingal.

Services have continued in each area. Newly formed Flexibus covers Meath and Louth, with Nifti continuing to provide transport services in the Ballyboughal, Oldtown, Garristown, Naul and Rolestown areas.

The TCU effectively means that, instead of Meath, Louth and Fingal looking for funding as separate entities, they provide a more cohesive and powerful until in the search for funding and other services.

All these routes are in response to requests from local residents who feel a sense of isolation. The big funding service we are chasing is the one from Swords to Blanchardstown cross country. This would be perfect for people in employment in these areas,” he concluded.

Clayton Hotel Launches Charity Event The official opening of the Charity Christmas Cracker event took place at the Clayton Hotel, Dublin Airport on Wednesday, 9th December last.

The event was to raise money in aid of Saint Francis Hospice, Raheny and Golden Years Charity in Darndale and is a result of a new care initiative by the Clayton Hotel team to help charities and groups in the local area.

Hospice, Golden Years also took part in the event. Des McCann, General Manager of the hotel officially launched the event at a ribbon cutting ceremony, said, “We hope to raise a lot of money for the Hospice charities and Golden Years that are so important to the local community,” he said.

The whole event was open to the public and there was ceili dancing, strictly come brush dancing, traditional Irish music and noted choir Lambay Singers, with Donaghmeade Holy Trinity National School welcoming everyone at the front door.

The event was also attended by Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Dr James Reilly as well as local stakeholders in the travel business. The emphasis of the morning was about infrastructural projects affecting greater Fingal area. The Minister spoke at length (32 minutes) about the €10 billion Capital Plan for Transport emphasising the importance of connectivity between Dublin Airport and the city centre, as well as plans for the Dublin Docklands development project.

the Government’s plans for the promised Metro North project and Minister Donohoe held a question and answer session mainly about Metro. While he was convinced that the light rail project was ‘the right thing to do’, he was noncommittal about a start date for the project, saying that nothing would happen before 2017.

Eventually he, along with Minister Reilly confirmed that the commencement date would be 2021, in the term of the next Government, provided the present incumbents are returned to power in the upcoming general election.

Another speaker, Alan Sparling, a Skerries resident and Managing Director of Star Alliance, the largest airlines group in Europe, pressed the Minister for a much needed parallel runway at Dublin Airport to be started as soon as possible, stating that as things are at present, only a fraction of airlines under the Star Alliance flag can use Dublin Airport. With the extra capacity the new parallel runway will provide, many more Star Alliance airlines will use Dublin Airport, with the obvious economic benefits.

Council Award For Snowflakes Autism Support At an awards ceremony at the Draíocht Arts Centre in Blanchardstown recently, Snowflakes Autism Support were awarded the second Runner Up award in the Fingal County Council 2015 Community Group of the Year awards in the Representative Organisations category.

This award is a huge achievement for an organisation that is

less than four years old. In that short space of time, Snowflakes has established itself as a vital resource in the greater Dublin region for families affected by autism.

Having moved into a new home in April of this year, in Holywell Community Centre in Swords, Snowflakes continues to maintain a high level of quality events and services throughout the year for its members, which

now numbers over 170. This award is recognition from the local authorities Community, Culture and Sports Division of all the fantastic work and dedication that the 7-strong Snowflakes committee put in day after day, in order to improve the lives of their member families.

The Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Dr James Reilly T.D, has signed the commencement order for the removal of the defence of ‘Reasonable Chastisement’ under section 28 of the Children First Act 2015.

The move means that a person who administers corporal punishment to a child will no longer be able to rely

of the defence of reasonable chastisement in the courts.

The Children First Act 2015 establishes no new offence in regard to corporal punishment. It shows a further demonstration of this Government’s commitment to the elimination of corporal punishment and to protecting children from violence.

The group had a very busy week, with presentations to two local St Vincent de Paul conferences in Swords.

Firstly they visited St Colmcille’s Girls National School on Tuesday, 8th December. Thirty five schoolchildren from Localise handed over 60 gift parcels to the local St Vincent de Paul, as part of their Christmas project.

Orla Burrowes Localise co-ordinator said, “Over the last eight weeks, 35 young people here from St Columcille’s Boys and Girls schools have got together and they

Bernie Campbell, President of St Colmcille’s Conference of SVP said, “This is a wonderful occasion and it’s great to see all these Localise sixth class pupils doing such

a charitable act. They have helped us in previous years with food, but this year they asked us what we would like for the people we visit. We have found that those most forgotten in terms of receiving gifts are those aged between 11 and 16. Localise concentrated on this sector, and with the money they had left over, they even bought some baby hampers.

Looking Back At 30 Years Of Irish Guide Dogs The non-profit charity organisation Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind in Balbriggan has recently celebrated their 30th anniversary of serving the community. The charity, that was founded in 1985, has seen many volunteers come and go and many of them gathered at the celebration ceremony to pay tribute to the many people Irish Guide Dogs have helped. In celebration of 30 years of existence, the branch spoke to the County Leader to remember their highlights.

The arrival to Balbriggan and therefore to the community of the North County, has given the branch a powerful start into a very successful era.

Their very first guide dog, Frank, worked together with his owner Tom O’Neill, Co-chairman of the branch, until his retirement in the early 90’s. In recognition of his work, Frank

received the ‘Freedom of the Lamppost of Balbriggan’ certificate from the Town Commissioners.

By Olivia Leth In 2007 the branch broke all of their records, as they raised a total of €27,000 of funds. The record was broken again the following year with the enormously successful fundraising of €100,000. In recent years, the branch has also recreated the annual dog walk, an event that many brave volunteers went from house to house for sponsorship for.

In the run of their existence, the branch has established school talks to raise awareness of the importance of guide dogs to the little ones of our community.

The frequent visits to the local schools paid off, as the children that attended those school talks have all grown up and support the

That should not be the case” he said.

He went on to say that, “I support the Property Tax freeze, but many will be left behind,” he warned.

“On behalf of Fianna Fáil I tabled an amendment taking into consideration the dilemma faced by the more than 200,000 people who are in mortgage arrears and have no ability to pay the Local Property Tax.” He concluded by saying that, “We have spent a great deal of time debating how the LPT could be improved but we have gotten nowhere with this legislation bar the freezing of the revaluation. Fianna Fáil has made specific commitments on the issues I have outlined, which will form part of our manifesto to improve the tax.”

In 2015, the branch was asked to take part in the Balbriggan Summer Fest and has also moved to a new starting point in the Supervalu car park.

The branch would like to take the opportunity to thank all of the people that have supported them throughout the years.

They are grateful for all the volunteers, people from the Balbriggan Scouts, Supervalu and the entire community of the North County for their support.

Speaking on behalf of the branch, Cochairman and guide dog owner Tom O’Neill told the County Leader: “We feel the strength in the branch is the friendships within it.

Each person who becomes involved says they feel they have become part of a family and love the volunteering work they do. We would like to thank everybody who supports our work, without your support nobody would have a guide dog or an assistance dog. We would like to wish everybody a happy and peaceful Christmas and 2016.”

Farrell’s ‘Goal’-den Mile Fine Gael TD for Dublin Fingal, Alan Farrell is organising the 9th annual ‘GOAL’ mile charitable walk at Malahide Castle with support from volunteers from the local community and Barry Andrews, Chief Executive Officer of GOAL. According to Farrell, “The annual GOAL mile event in Malahide, which is in its 9th year, provides an enjoyable way for local people to start their Christmas Day, while also raising vital funds for the

important charitable work that GOAL carry out. Participants in the GOAL mile are asked to run, jog or walk along a one mile circuit which is marked out around Malahide Demense. He told us that he looks forward to welcoming both experienced runners, joggers and those who would like a leisurely stroll on Christmas morning. The event in Malahide this year will take place on December 25th between 11am and noon and it will begin at the rear car park of Malahide Castle.

Sunday 13th December, marked the launch of Ireland’s first Junior Parkrun Ireland, with the inaugural free run taking place at Kenure Woods in Rush. Over 160 children and many parents took part in the 2k.

Building on the success of the parkrun phenomenon, which has grown to 41 locations nationwide, Rush junior parkrun marks the introduction of the Sunday event, which is aimed at young people, aged between four and 14.

A 2k run, as opposed to Saturday parkruns which are 5k, Rush junior parkrun is the first of many junior

parkruns that are planned for Ireland.

“Since we introduced parkrun to Ireland in 2012 it has grown phenomenally and we now have weekly events in 41 locations.

We’ve been keen to introduce a junior event for some time but we needed to identify the right location and team of volunteers, which we have here today in Rush,” adds Matt Shields, Country Manager of parkrun Ireland. Matt continues: “The popularity of today’s event, despite the cold,

wintery conditions, demonstrates the appetite for junior parkrun and this is just the first event of many junior parkruns.” All parkrun events are community owned and coordinated They’re timed weekly runs that take place 52 weeks of the year, and are free to attend, removing all barriers for participation. Rush junior parkrun will take place every Sunday at 9.30am at Kenure Woods, Rush. For further information see www.parkrun.ie

Death Of Bishop O’Mahony The death has occurred, after a lengthy illness, of the emeritus auxiliary Bishop of Dublin, Dermot O’Mahony, Titular Bishop of Tiava.

He was aged 80. He lived the latter years of his retirement in Swords.

Archbishop Diarmuid Martin expressed his sympathy to the family and friends of Bishop O’Mahony and said the priests of the Archdiocese were saddened by the news of his passing as he held, over many years, several roles of leadership and responsibility in the Archdiocese of Dublin and nationally.

The Government have made a commitment to increase funds for the Nursing Home Support Scheme, (The Fair Deal Scheme), in the 2016 budget. This comes as welcome news for the NHI (Nursing Homes Ireland) organisation.

The promise has been made to increase the budget by €22 million, in order to support timely access to nursing home care. This comes after an additional €44 million was given this year , a sum that improved the capacity of acute hospital services considerably.

The introduction of this funding for the Fair Deal scheme will ensure timely access to nursing home care.

This in turn will reduce financial approval wait times. It will also mean the number of delayed discharges in acute hospitals will be reduced and will help to address any current overcrowding issues.

The County Leader spoke to Mary McCormack of the Tara Winthrop Private Clinic to find out what the Fair Deal Scheme means to both patient and Nursing home; “Firstly, the Fair Deal was set up to benefit Nursing Home Residents. It is an

He retired as Auxiliary Bishop of Dublin on health grounds in June 1996, and lived the latter years of his retirement in Swords. His funeral Mass took place on Tuesday 15th December. May he rest in peace. excellent scheme in that the prospective resident is protected and placed at the centre of the scheme. The Resident or their Care Representative can make an application to the Nursing Home Support Office, Civic Centre, Ballymun, Dublin 9, if he/she is unfit to live alone any longer. A Care Representative is appointed from the family and the Court to administer the funding. The amount of financial support the person receives is based on their income – 80 per cent of income is taken by the Fair Deal Office and the resident has 20 per cent disposable income for their own use. Their home can also be included in the scheme if they wish it to be and a loan based on the value of the home is approved or not as the case may be. The family or the person themselves can then choose the nursing home they wish to reside in.”

She went on to stress that it is not the Nursing homes that benefit from Fair Deal , but the patients; “Nursing Homes do not benefit from this extra funding. Nursing homes must negotiate their fees separately with the National Treatment Purchase Fund who seek “yellow pack” fees for caring for the most complex cases. In fact the fees one receives does not reflect the care, it is based on the county average and is most unsatisfactory.”

Domestic Abuse Intensifies Due To Christmas Stress Domestic abuse can be defined as; a pattern of behaviour which involves violence or other abuse by one person on another in a home or family setting. It can be perpetrated on or by any persons sharing an intimate relationship of any nature.

It is a sobering fact that, whilst most of us can revel in the merriment of the season, many women, men and their families will be measuring breaths and counting heartbeats until the next explosion of violence from a loved one. An estimated 1 in 7 women and 1 in 17 men will experience some form of domestic abuse within their lifetime.

The men and women that are living day to day in these situations report that the high levels of stress that come with the Christmas period can often become a trigger for increased occasions of verbal, physical and mental abuse.

Here at the County Leader, we spoke to Sgt Terri Ferguson of the Swords Garda station to find out what constitutes domestic abuse, what to look out for and what you can do about it; “The term ‘Domestic Abuse’, though not defined in legislation is a term that evokes both fear and disgust in most people. It can be regarded as the physical, sexual, financial, or emotional abuse of one partner by the other in a relationship. Women in heterosexual relationships account for the majority of reported victims of domestic abuse, however men in heterosexual relationships and men and women of same sex relationships can also be victims.”

She went on to highlight the fact that it is not just Spousal abuse that is considered to be domestic abuse, “Children can also be subjected to domestic abuse. Other forms can include abuse of older people and of people with disabilities by spouses, carers, partners, children or relatives.

Remember there is no ‘type’ of woman or man to whom it occurs, and there is no ‘type’ of home in which it happens.”

Sgt Ferguson explained to us that domestic abuse includes all kinds of physical, sexual, mental, financial and emotional abuse within an intimate relationship something that was also highlighted to us whilst in conversation with Women’s Aid Director, Margaret Martin. She spoke to us about the specific ways in which the Christmas period impacts on the way women and men are abused.

Most notably in relation to financial abuse. She told us that, “Withholding cash needed for basic necessities like food and heating, forcing women to give up work, putting all bills in the woman’s name, and even taking the woman’s salary are all forms of domestic abuse most prevalent at Christmas time.”

Ms Martin told us that for many of the women who ring the helpline, Christmas is a time of hurt, fear, intimidation, intentional cruelty and sudden flashes of violence. “Abusive men can use the holidays to threaten the well-being of children using them as pawns in control and intimidation during what should be a time of joy.”

The same things can be said about men who find themselves in abusive situations. According to AMEN, the national help line for male domestic abuse victims, statistics say that 1 in 17 men will experience domestic abuse within their lifetime.

However, an accurate number is hard to gauge, due to the fact that it is a crime with virtually no visibility. This is because, whether or not it is down to shame, fear of not being believed or not being taken seriously, there is a reticence to come forward on the part of male victims.

This leaves them voiceless and powerless.

Especially at a time of year that is so focused on the role of the ‘bread winner’ or the ‘man of the house’ within the household.

In our conversation with Sgt Ferguson, she impressed upon us the importance of letting people know that there is help available out there for everyone who needs it; “it is the duty of the Gardaí to provide protection to you and to investigate fully all incidents of domestic abuse, including reports of domestic abuse received from third parties. If you are in immediate danger, call the Gardaí on 999 or 112. They will provide protection and can put you in contact with organisations that can provide you with counselling, advice or shelter.”

There are many other organisations out there that will help. Women’s Aid, as well as their help line service, run a Swords based One to One support service, and AMEN, while based in Meath have a confidential helpline active Mon-Friday 9am – 5pm for Male domestic abuse victims.

Both organisations work in tandem with the Gardaí and social services and will provide the best possible service and advice and provide links to help you get yourself out of the situation you are in.

It is very important to remember that you are not alone. That there is help out there, that you will be listened to and that you will be taken seriously.

Whether you are the victim of spousal abuse, a child or young person in a dangerous home situation, or someone who, for any other reason is vulnerable or at risk, there are people out there that can and will help you who are simply on the other end of a phone. Pyrite; Free Testing For Tax Exemption Local Minister, James Reilly, has said that legislation brought to the Dáil on Friday will ease the burden on homeowners affected by pyrite, by removing the necessity for them to pay for testing in order to avail of the exemption from Local Property Tax (LPT).

Minister Reilly explained the need for the new legislation. “In Budget 2016, the government exempted homeowners affected by pyrite from Local Property Tax (LPT).

However it soon became apparent that these homeowners were still

expected to pay for expensive core sample testing in order to qualify for the exemption.”

He went on to say; “I raised this issue with the Minister for Finance, Michael Noonan and he accepted that legislative change may be needed to deal with the anomaly. I am delighted now that this matter is being addressed. The Local Property Tax legislation currently going through the Dáil will deal comprehensively with the situation.’’ This legislation will extend the LPT exemption to properties whose

owners don’t have the required certification but have properties that have been proven to have been damaged by pyrite to a significant extent. The exemption is being extended to properties that have been included in the official pyrite remediation scheme without the need for testing, properties that are remediated as a result of a successful insurance claim and properties that are remediated by the builder or property developer who constructed the property.

We asked her what the reports have been like and she said that: “The children in the North County are all really good and Santa can’t wait for he and Rudolph to bring lots of presents to them on Christmas Eve.” So, any children out there had better watch out, better not cry, better not pout and we’ll tell you why, Santa Claus is definitely coming to town!
