‘Star Wars’ Accused Cleared Of Murder In Swords A father-of-four has been cleared of murdering another man with a baseball bat on Main Street in Swords on 10th October 2013. An eye-witness in court described the fight, as something akin to a scene from Star Wars, when the accused, Jooda Akanbi (39) from Ashton Avenue, Applewood, Swords hit his fellow Nigerian, Taiwo Jamani (45) with a baseball bat in broad daylight. A two-week trial at the Central Criminal Court heard that a fight had broken out between the two men with baseball bats on Swords Main Street. The trial heard that the two men had fallen out the previous year, and no longer saw each other. However, on 10th October 2013 their paths crossed with tragic consequences. The court heard that Mr Akanbi drove his car down Main Street, passing Mr Jamani along the way. Mr
Akanbi pulled into the nearest car parking space and proceeded to open the boot of his car. He testified that we went to the boot of the car to get documents he needed for a meeting. Mr Jamani then crossed the road to the accused, where a shouting match took place between the two, and each man took a baseball bat out of the boot of the car. Mr Akanbi testified that the deceased was the first to raise his hand, punching the accused on the jaw, before grabbing a bat. Mr Akanbi said that it was only then that he took the bat out of the car. Mr Jamani suffered blunt force trauma and died from his injuries on 13th November. A jury of five women and seven men found Mr Akanbi not guilty

Local Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Dr James Reilly recently welcomed the news that the number of young people on the live register has dropped by 20.1 per cent since March 2014. “This is very encouraging and as Minister for Children and Youth Affairs it is great to see that our country is moving in the right direction and opportunities are opening up for our young people around the North County and beyond,” Reilly said. “The Live Register has dropped to 10 per cent from a high of 15.1 per cent,” he explained. “The government is committed to creating 40,000 new jobs in 2015 and to achieving full employment by 2018. This, I believe will give hope to families around the locality who have had to deal with emigration due to employment needs over the past number of years,” Reilly added.

Swords Man's Social Media Campaign For Charity Continued from page 1 The great news is that Professor McElvanney has decided to set up a scholarship under Elaine's name, which has pleased Keith no end. "We didn't know what they were going to do with the money, but it was brilliant to know that he was setting up this scholarship under her name, "The Elaine Galwey Scholarship." Keith has decided to continue with the gruelling 'Hell and Back' run this year, and Elaine sister, Suzanne came up with this social media campaign, similar to the Ice Bucket challenge, which caught the imagination of people all over the world last year. "It's called 'Slurp for CF' which involves getting a drink, any kind, be it tea. water or beer. The idea is that you take a big loud slurp from your drink and then you nominate as many people to take the slurp and then text Slurp to 50300, which donates €2 to Cystic Fibrosis Hope Source. We're hoping to raise as much awareness and funds as possible." said Keith.
Contrasting Fortunes Of Aer Lingus And It’s Bidder The Government’s decision to sell it’s stake in Aer Lingus to IAG may be weeks away, according to Minister for Transport, Paschal Donohoe. This comes as the airline reported a loss of €48 million during the first three month of this year. In the meantime, Aer Lingus’ bidder, IAG reported a quarterly profit for the first time, helped by lower fuel costs and an improvement in performance across it’s three airlines. IAG , which is in the process of acquiring Aer Lingus, reported an underlying operating profit of €25 for the year ended on 31st March. This compares with a loss of €150 million made last year and an analyst forecast loss of €3 million. Fuel costs were down by 11 per cent, which IAG claim was helped by more efficient aircraft. Meanwhile Aer Lingus chief, Stephen Kavanagh reiterated the airline’s support for for the IAG takeover, saying that it would deliver “significant benefits for all Aer Lingus stakeholders,” he said. The airline reported that it’s revenue rose by 7.9 per cent to €280 million in the first three months o this year, spurred on by a strong performance in it’s long-haul business, whereas it’s short-haul business remains challenging. Kavanagh also revealed that he’ll unveil new cost-cutting measures later this year.

Fingal Community College in Swords held their second annual Duck Race, run by the school’s Parents Council, which is hoped will provide much-needed funds for sporting equipment for the school. Swords Students Crowned Bond Trader Champions

Students from Loreto Secondary School in Swords recently scooped the top prize in a major banking competition. They fended off stiff competition from 200 students from across Leinster to claim first place in the Bank of Ireland Bond Trader challenge. Held in the Aviva Stadium, students in teams of five took part in the Bond Trader Challenge, responding to real market scenarios and making decisions on how to manage their own bond portfolio. The Loreto team of Aimée O’Toole, Laura Sludds, Nicola Kelly, Kathryn Anderson and Sarah Gerrard swept all before them, winning the Bond Trader evening. The Loreto students took home a selection of prizes, including the Bond Trader Winners Trophy, a signed Leinster jersey for the school, iPads and Leinster jerseys for the team. Teacher, Aoife O’Reilly a past pupil herself, told the County Leader that it was a very tough competition and the girls were brilliant in how they coped with each question, which related to a real-life situation,” she said.

The students were given a different scenario to deal with and some were very tough. When challenged to predict how markets would react to a surprise cut in the European Central Bank interest rates, the girls from Loreto Swords correctly predicted that the price of long-dated bonds would increase and stock markets would receive a boost. In another difficult scenario, the teams were challenged to place shares after news that violent protests had erupted in Saudi Arabia, with the government putting tanks on the streets. Once again, the Loreto girls did well by fleeing to safety and dumped shares in favour of long-dated bonds, seen as a refuge in economic turmoil. School principal, Peter McNamara was very proud of the girls, saying they were a credit to their families and to the school. “They came from nowhere to win the event, having been placed fourth at one stage, but they came out with a tremendous last round to win the day,” he said.
Following last week’s front page article on the regeneration of Swords town, more positive news has emerged on this front. In what should help with the County Council’s efforts to inject a new lease of life into our local towns and villages, a package of measures aimed at doing just this is set to be announced by the Government shortly. Campaigners and retailers have claimed over recent years that many towns across the North County are “dying on their feet” due to a combination of high commercial rates, parking charges and out-oftown retail parks. An €80 million
fund for urban renewal projects being finalised by the Department of the Environment will seek to tackle the problem by supporting targeted developments likely to boost the economy of towns and cities. In addition, new legislation – the Urban Regeneration and Housing Bill – will include a longpromised vacant sites levy to incentivise property owners to develop under-utilised sites. A third element of the package involves the removal of obstacles to a “living city” tax incentive scheme for the renovation of buildings constructed 100 or more years ago. This announcement
comes at an apt time, particularly for Swords as the local authority continue to press ahead with their plans to develop a Cultural Quarter around the main street and castle in the town. When contacted, the County Council said they said they would be applying for the scheme, if they were eligible to: “If any of the identified projects in the Swords Cultural Quarter Masterplan are eligible and if Swords is a designated town, application will be made by Fingal County Council to the department for funding under the scheme,” the local authority said.

Work Underway To Improve Water Quality At Rush Beach Following last week’s article in the County Leader detailing that Rush failed to meet the water standards of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), work is said to be underway to address the water problems. These have been caused by historic under investment at Waste Water Treatment facilities in Rush. Major works are said to be planned for a
new system which will collect and transfer the flows to the new Wastewater Treatment Plant at Portrane. The scheme involves extensive pipelines and new pumping stations. This news will come as a relief to local residents and visiting tourists, who are eager to see the water quality restored. Despite the water’s poor quality, it does not mean the water is
unsafe to swim in. Should the water be deemed unfit for use by the public, the County Counciol will be required to make this known. These works are at an early stage yet, with work commencing on the overall design. Construction is expected to take place in 2016. The project to improve Rush’s water quality should hopefully mean it can be restored to its
‘blue flag’ status, a title which has been awarded to many of our North County beaches over the years.

Old age comes to all of us if we are lucky enough to survive infancy, puberty, marriage and all the other traumatic and dramatic events which can occur whilst travelling the pathway of life. Old age is a terminal illness, just like any other life threatening illness, but it is only in recent years that this fact has been recognised and treated as a Speciality subject, in its own right, by the medical profession. This has not
always been the case and we are just fortunate to live in an era where old age is treated with the dignity and respect it deserves, at least from the Medical and Nursing professions. Last weekend, the eighth Congress of the World Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics was held in Dublin. The Taoiseach, Enda Kenny opened the Conference and gave a very moving, thought provoking and insightful
welcome address to the delegates present. Perhaps he is also preparing for old age!! It is very heartening for all professionals engaged in the lifelong specialist Care of Older People in our community, to be recognised and valued for the service they provide. Many older people still have a cultural fear of nursing homes which dates back to the 19th and early part of the last century, when the County Homes were

a tragic feature of abject poverty and consequent lack of even basic human care on the Irish land-
scape. Nowadays, the Nursing Homes industry in Ireland is one of the most highly regulated of all industries in the country and as a result, the majority of Care Centres are of a very high standard in terms of nursing care, appearance and comfort. Statistics show that less than 4.5 per cent of the Irish population aged 65 years and over are living in Nursing Homes. Older people who live in Nursing Homes are people, who because of their advanced mental and physical condition, are unable to live at home. Neither are they suitable to live in the acute hospital setting, once their acute medical condition has been treated. Home is almost always the preferred option for most people and if all nursing care needs are met, together with generous daily care input by the family involved is available, home is also the best outcome for the older person. Care in the community, without generous and committed input from the family can be disastrous for the older person. It is also a fact that older people, once they settle in a nursing home love the nursing care, security, dignity and kindness they experience. It is also a fact that families who experience this special care and attention, shown unremittingly to their loved ones, also sincerely appreciate it. Most people over the age of 75 do not want to leave their home when they are no longer able to take care of themselves. Many see it as a loss of their independence and an invasion of privacy. This leaves their children with the question of how to take care of their loved ones. Old people might fall, forget to take their medicine or simply need assistance in their daily routine. Luckily there are a number of options which are available, so
that your loved ones can enjoy their twilight years in the safety and security of their own homes.
In-Home Care A care giving professional assists the elderly person with daily activities, such as bathing, dressing, eating and walking. A care giver can provide assistance with other daily tasks, so that the person is able to remain in their home, or offer family members a break from caring for their loved ones. There are ways to make the change easier: you can start gradually by having the care giver come only for a few hours a week. Furthermore, you should involve your loved one in choosing the aide. A good carer can be of invaluable help to the elderly person, in as much as they provide company and conversation, which is vital in keeping people active and alert. Sometimes the mere presence of someone to listen can be priceless to elderly people, who can become lonely and depressed otherwise
Gadgets To make a home safer, there are a number of things that need to be attended to. To avoid accidents it is absolutely important that all the main areas of the home have proper lighting. This includes all entrances and even the backyard. The entrance should always be safe. You should also make sure that they are barrier-free so that someone in a wheelchair or someone who has trouble climbing steps will be able to pass. If the entrance includes a step you can use a ramp in order to make it barrier-free. Another room that needs to be comfortable is the bathroom. You should start by installing grab bars. Moreover, you can lower the bathroom sink, install an elevated toilet and built a roll-in shower.

There’s a great tradition and ethos of acceptance and inclusion here and I cannot think of a more worthy school to receive funding to further expand the great teaching that goes on here,” he said. He also recognised the wonderful opportunity that will accrue to the construction industry, as a result of the Summer Works scheme, as an important boost for the

No Time To Waste By Cathal Boland It seems that the Greek Finance Minister, Yanis Varoufakis really upset his Eurozone colleagues as he continued to express his anger at their lack of flexibility and his general dismissal of the austerity solutions, promoted by those “bailing out” his country. In response, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras began calling EU leaders personally and moved the negotiations lead from Varoufakis to Deputy Foreign Minister Euclid Tsakalotosin, in an apparent move to ease tensions as his country desperately struggles to survive the crisis. His Foreign Minister suggested that Germany seems to wish to “make an example” of a Left Wing Government, which is not following the establishment line. He went so far as to warn that if a solution is not found, the extreme Right in the form of Golden

There is a wealth of imagination, energy and vision available to us in Fingal and I want to encourage everyone to get involved in their own way so we can make Fingal 2016 a truly memorable event.” Following a short presentation on the Fingal 2016 Centenary Programme, participants will be invited to partake in workshops to share ideas, projects and initiatives of local interest. Dawn is waiting in the wings. It seems that while the Government still has the support of the Greek people who have shown in opinion polls that they want a solution found with the bond holders. The view on the street seems to be “stay in but get a deal”. It will be difficult for Tsipras to achieve this as he appears bound by his election promises. The question now asked is: has the ECB begun preparing for a Greek exit from the Euro and EU? All sources say no, the EU and ECB would never resort to such indirect blackmail. Notwithstanding, it must be disturbing for Greeks that the Italian daily La Stampa report that Plan B is under discussion by the ECB and Germany. Under this plan, Tsipras Government would be replaced by a technocratic cabinet which would allow Greece to default without leaving the Eurozone. EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Pierre Moscovici told El País, “With or without Varoufakis, Greece’s problem remains the same: Athens must present a conclusive list of reforms, and quickly. There’s no time to waste.”

Skerries Set For 10th Anniversary Of Rás Finale For the tenth year in a row, the seaside town of Skerries, will host the final stage of the famous Rás race, which will finish on Sunday, 24th May. With less than three weeks to go, the excitement is already building for the event, which will come to its conclusion here in the North County. Locals came out in their thousands last year, lining the streets as they cheered on the riders for the final few kilometres of the gruelling
eight day race and Rás organiser Tony Campbell is confident he will see similar crowds this year. “It’s the ten year anniversary for Skerries as host of the final stage and it’s a real credit to the town and their committee to be able to host Ireland’s only UCI ranked race for that long - and do it so well every year. The reception the riders get here every year is nothing short of spectacular,” he said. “I always have foreign riders come up to me
every year and say that in their career it’s the best finish they’ve ever experienced, anywhere in the world.” “It’s always a thrilling finale in Skerries. Despite a lot of tired legs, riders will be giving everything to get that yellow jersey come Sunday. The Swords Cycling Club, the Skerries Community Association, the Chamber of Commerce and others always put in amazing work each year to ensure a wonderful end to the race so the riders can expect an incredible reception as they make their way in to the town,” he added. The eight day International cycling road race takes place from May 17th, and will finish in Skerries on the 24th.

With a background in care, Linda McDaid owner of Bubbles Too Creche, came into childcare almost by accident. Having left her job with a security company, Linda started to look after her friend’s children and found that her caring personality, combined with her love of children was ideally suited to the role. That was 17 years ago and Linda has gone from strength to strength ever since. Trained to one of the highest levels of Vtec childcare, level 6, Linda decided over ten years ago, to start her own business, a business that would make a difference to families and most importantly the children themselves. Choosing a location was an important factor and Linda decided that, due to its close proximity to the M1 motorway, Feltrim would suit commuting parents perfectly. The ethos of the crèche is that all children should be treated equally and with dignity and all of the activities are linked to Aistear, the early childhood curriculum framework. Linda participates in CETS, ECCE and FAS schemes that provide qualifying parents with various options for subsidised childcare. With Bubbles Too Creche, your little ones really couldn’t be in safer hands.

YOURVIEW Q: With reporter Miriam Fritsch
This week we asked “If you or a family member fell ill at home how confident would you be about getting a hospital bed?”
Miriam Fritsch
Marie Kenny, Swords Well, from what I hear on the television and with the waiting lists I wouldn't imagine it would be great.
Miriam Dowdall, Donabate Yes. For two reasons: I have private health insurance and also under the public system I would be quite confident about getting a bed depending on what the illness was, whether it requires diagnoses and waiting lists. Basically once you have private insurance I would be quite confident.
Audrey Reilly, Swords I don't think I would because all hospitals are full.
Philip Cunningham, Swords No not really. I was in hospital recently and they sent me home then because there was no hope of getting a bed.
Pat Behan, Swords Well, the way things are at the moment I wouldn't say so. It is really gone very bad. So no, I wouldn’t be confident.
Betty Burns, Swords I would not be confident. The hospitals are so packed. There are no beds for everybody. It is a bad situation. I am quite elderly myself now and I am just keeping my fingers crossed that I can keep going.
Pat Dempsey, Beaumont I imagine I would get a trolley first. I wouldn’t think you would walk straight into a bed. I wouldn’t feel that confident about getting a bed.

John Kilbride , Swords No, I wouldn’t. My wife is sick on a regular basis. We have been there in the emergency room for at least two days on a chair before we even got a trolley. I have no confidence in getting a bed at all.
Sean Quigley Swords I would be very confident. I have gone through the medical system myself. I got good treatment. I have private insurance as well. Once you get into the system they look after you very well.
Martina Petrickova, Swords I never had experience with Irish hospitals. I pay my private insurance. I think I would be okay
Brid Deery, Swords Yes, I visited the hospital a few times in the last few years and I was extremely well looked after. I really think they are working under terrible pressure but I feel I would get a bed if I needed a bed. The bed situation is problematic, but the staff are excellent and I do think that they would do the best to get me a bed if I needed it.

XL Delicatessen, which is located on Main Street in Swords is making a real difference to people visiting the area who are looking for quality food to consume on the premises or to take away. The shop, which opened in November 2012 is operated by Christy Trimble and his son, Stephen. The County Leader spoke to Stephen about the progress made by the company and plans for the future. He said, “We set up two years ago last November. Our number one seller is our chicken fillet roll which is proving to be very popular. With the two schools in the immediate vicinity, we are targeting wholesome, decent and affordable food for children, as well as other businesses in the area. We recently renovated the place and we had a look at what was selling and we came to the conclusion that the food was our number one seller. We noticed at lunchtime that all our seating was taken and we needed to provide extra seating,” said Stephen. He sees exciting times ahead for XL and there will be four seater booths coming on-stream, and he is targeting early morning
passers-by for special breakfast deals. “Between 6.30am and 8.30am you can have your sausage roll and coffee, or coffee and a sandwich for people looking for something to grab and go before work. We provide a daily lunch consisting of chicken and bacon, with our home-made stuffing, potatoes and vegetables. We also serve roast beef, roast ham and a full cafe menu with steak sandwiches and burgers is taking off and doing well. All our food is very reasonably priced and is of the highest quality. We’re trying to ger the word out that we are not just a sandwich bar or a takeaway, but that you can also get good wholesome food at an affordable price. We also do pasta specials, which are proving to be very popular with many of our customers,” he said. CEO of Fingal Dublin Chamber, Tony Lambert was full of praise for XL when he said, “The Chamber is delighted to support SMEs who run their own businesses in these difficult times. XL are to be applauded for opening up a convenience shop and for providing a quality service for people visiting Swords Main Street,” he said.

Funded by the County Council and guided by a local, community research steering group, the survey is the result of work completed in the local community by Community Works, a Galway based independent research team specialising in community development research. Commissioned in August 2014, Community Works conducted surveys and interviews with focus groups, residents and community groups to create a detailed profile of the Peninsula community. It was done to list the changes it has undergone and to suggest the directions the community might take in the future. Chairperson of the Steering Group, and local resident Ray O’Rourke said: “This analysis originally began with the idea of researching the local community’s perception of the Donabate Portrane Community and Leisure Centre.”
said. The CSPE (Civic, Social Environmental and Protection) class with the support of their teacher Eimear Joyce chose Irish guide dogs as their charity of the year, and raised just over €231 for the local group. “When we were approached to collect the cheque, we also went up and did a 40 minute talk with the students. They were really a lovely bunch of lads and girls, and it was a most enjoyable visit. Thanks all
for the cheque,” he added. The local guide dogs group also took part in National Guide Dog Day on Friday last and Tesco in Rush and Balbriggan got behind the group and allowed volunteers to sell their National Emblem badge on the day. Pictured here are pupils from the The C.S.P.E. class in Lusk Community School with their teacher Eimear Joyce, presenting a cheque to Tom O'Neill of Balbriggan Guide Dogs.
“Amongst other findings, ‘Forming the Future’ identifies specific deficits within the areas of youth facilities, especially of a nonsporting nature; sports facilities, with reference to the All Weather Pitch; and cultural and entertainment facilities to include a dedicated space for art and drama. Residents also felt that a security strategy for the area needs to be devised and implemented. It was felt issues of isolation and transport for local senior citizens need to recognised and addressed,” he explained. “To help implement the recommendations of Forming the Future, the County Council have graciously agreed to fund a small grants scheme open to all local groups, details of which will be announced at the launch day. I would encourage one or two representatives from all local groups, no matter how small, to attend the launch and obtain application details for this grant scheme,” he added. “On behalf of the Steering Group, I would like to thank Fingal County Council especially local Community Officers Sinead Wiley and Ann Mulligan for their tireless efforts, Jacinta Lowndes, General Manager, DPCC and of course, residents of the local community.”
Donabate ICA Donabate Portrane ICA guild meet every second and last Tuesday of the month in Donabate Community Centre at 8.15pm. Anyone interested please contact donabateportraneica@gmail.com.

Most of us have pets which we adore and which quickly become part of the family. Pets like cats and dogs, as well as other more exotic animals provide us with great company, and add greatly to our quality of life. They provide an extra dimension to family life, where the lives of all are enhanced by their presence. Therefore, it stands to reason that we should make
sure that our pets are always in tip-top shape at all times. Caring for a pet is much more than just love and affection for them. It includes a healthy nutrition, grooming, shelter, health care and daily exercises. As an owner you need to be aware of your pet’s needs and make sure that regular visits to your local vet is part of your regime.

Exercise In the case of dog owners, it is vitally important that your dog is exercised regularly. This is time consuming, but is essential for the dog’s well-being. Of course, it can be used as an excuse to exercise ourselves and go for long walks as the long s u m m e r evenings are on the way.

Nutrition Pets often eat everything that is offered to them. Therefore, the owner usually does not question, whether the pet’s nutrition is healthy. But what exactly is good nutrition? The nutrition depends on activity, race, weight, age and gender of the pet. A low-activity dog, for example, needs only about 185-350 calories daily, while larger and more active dogs need 10002000 calories. Many owners tend to overfeed their pets. Thus, a lot of pets are overweight. In order to avoid overweight or other sicknesses you can use a food formulator that helps to combine ingredients in order to meet the pet’s daily
owners, pets need regular check-ups. Veterinarians check the pet’s general health and also help with any questions you might have. Moreover, they will make sure that vaccinations of your pet are up-to-date. If you get a new pet make sure to see a vet straight away to make sure that everything is in order.
of loose hair. Be sure to check on leaves or other things that might be tangled into the fur. Cats benefit from combing on a daily basis because they will have lesser hair balls. As an owner of dogs or cats it is important to bathe them. For dogs it is best to bathe them once a month and cats every f e w months. Be careful not to bathe them too often as it will take away the natural oils of the skin and leads to itching.
Kennels and Catteries If you want to go on holiday or need to travel for work, a boarding kennel or cattery is usually a good choice. They provide a safe and caring environment for your pet, while you’re away. The price varies from the size of the animal and whether it is sharing accommodation with others or not. Boarding kennels can be booked for all kinds of animals, for dogs and cats but also for horses and reptiles.
Sometimes not even regular checkups with the vet prevent your pet from becoming ill. One of two pets suffers from a major illness during their lifetime. Therefore, it is a good idea to insure your pets against unexpected illnesses or other health issues. By doing this, you will be able to provide your pet with the best medical care possible. Medical treatments can quickly add up and become a financial problem. Sometimes you can also benefit from boarding kennels or holiday cancellation when something happens to you or your pet.

Nothing says spring is here like your garden. It’s time to dig out those spades and shovels and really make your garden shine with some new plants and flowers. Don’t be afraid to experiment with colours and garden design. Your local garden centre will be only too pleased to provide you with the necessary advice, as well as the plants needed for this purpose. New Maritime Safety Strategy Launched Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Paschal Donohoe, TD, has launched a new Maritime Safety Strategy 2015 – 2019, the theme of which is ‘Make Time for Maritime Safety.’ The new strategy was developed and aims to assist our coastal communities in reducing the number of fatalities at sea. With a great seafaring tradition in the North County, this news will be warmly welcomed here. “Although the average annual number of marine incident-related fatalities, at 11, is low, lives continue to be lost on the water, despite regulation, inspections and training. Perhaps not surprisingly, most incidents happen in the fishing and recreational sectors. What is striking, however, is the fact that 99 per cent of maritime fatalities are male, with an average age of 44, and that fatalities in the maritime sector are potentially avoidable,” said the Minister. He continued, “There is broad agreement in the sector that to reduce fatalities, the focus needs to be on changing culture and personal behaviour rather than on more regulation. While this Strategy
primarily identifies actions that the Department, through the Irish Maritime Administration (IMA) will take, the important roles of individuals, families, friends and sectorial organisations are also highlighted.” “The 33 actions outlined in the report are grouped under five over-arching strategic objectives; Information and Communication, Search and Rescue Operations, Standards, Enforcement, Data and Evaluation. They are centred on promoting personal responsibility for maritime safety, improving search and rescue, and implementing preventative measures, including a robust inspection and regulatory framework, and an enhanced enforcement regime. “This strategy sets out in a very straightforward way, what individuals, families, friends and local communities can do to ensure safety when taking to the water. This includes proper planning, operating on a safety first basis, always telling somebody where you are going and when you expect to be back, wearing suitable clothing and always wearing lifejackets and buoyancy aids. I urge everyone involved in the sector to pay close heed to the strategy’s contents so that together we can reduce, and eventually eliminate, needless fatalities at sea,” he concluded.
Dangers Of Drink Spiking In Rape Cases As parents, it is very important to know that your daughters are safe on a night out with friends, and that they are fully aware that danger lurks everywhere. According to experts, alcohol is the number one ‘date rape’ drug in Ireland. There are cases of sexual predators using other drugs, but it is far more common to secretly give ‘double shots’ of alcohol to incapacitate vulnerable women.
A popular tactic is to surreptitiously strengthen the drink of someone who is already voluntarily consuming alcohol. Drink spiking includes giving a person a double or triple shot, when they believe they are getting just one. The culture of permissiveness around alcohol, as well as the belief that victims may not get a sympathetic hearing, is one that cannot be ignored. A spokesperson for the Rape Crisis Network of Ireland said
that “women in these situations feel a strong sense of shame because they were so intoxicated, and they fear that if they make a complaint, people will say that they were asking for it. “People need to realise that rape is rape, whether the woman is sober or drunk,” said the spokesperson. A ‘sobering’ thought is that around 80 per cent of rape cases occur when women have consumed alcohol.
